SCHOLARSHIP DEFINES CLASS OF 2005 Leaders in faith and service. State champions and achievements galore in the academic arena. Excellence in the arts and community. All of those have the familiar ring of VicePrincipal Jack Heneghan’s epithet each year at graduation.
birth...the love of your parents and families brought you into being and nurtured you along the way. “There are others who have brought you to this graduation...your teachers, coaches, moderators- from t-ball to varsity, from learning the alphabet to delving into research...your first music lessons to your performance at nationals or in Marian’s musicals...each adult who has been a mentor to you has helped you develop those gifts and talents that have shaped your career at Marian.
2005 However, the proof of all of those comes in the answer of $7.3 million itself. . . as in the amount of college scholarships earned by the Class of 2005! One Marian slogan of “Prepared for College, Prepared for Life,” certainly came to life as Marian honored a class of 393 at its 44th Commencement on May 23 at the Tinley Park Convention Center.
Senior Class President, Charlie Wright ’05, addresses the Class of 2005 at graduation.
What’s the $7.3 million answer that describes the Marian Catholic High School Class of 2005? Scholastic accomplishments.
“Graduation is the culmination of four years of effort and study, successes and opportunities for growth,” explained Marian Principal Sr. Kathleen Anne Tait. “But the culmination tonight had roots in your

Marian recently sent 17 students to the National Catholic Forensics League Tournament in Milwaukee, with five advancing to the “octolevels,” and top 15-20% in the nation. With his performance, “Olive Juice,” Alex Kuehr ’05 advanced to the quarter-finals and matched with duo partner Nick Wilson ’06 to advance to the quarter-finals as well. Quarter-finalists could rank as high as 13th in the nation. The national event, which included 394 private school qualifiers from throughout the nation, featured 291 students in each event. Other octo-finalists for Marian were Amy Dettmann ’05 with “Horton Hears a Who” in Dramatic
Performance, sophomore Mike Whittaker in Extemporaneous Speaking and Jean-Phillip Brignol ’06 with “King” in Poetry. Additional students in Marian’s recordqualifying 17 entries to the nationals included the following: Vanessa Brignol, Oratorical Declamation; Courtney Cunningham, Oratorical Declamation; Lauren Eldridge, Oral Interpretation; Melissa Harmon, Oratorical Declamation; Catherine Mitros, Oral Interpretation; Matt Nix, Dramatic Interpretation; Louise Packard, Original Oratory; Nicole and Samantha Padula, Duo Interpretation; Michelle Pritchett, Original Oration; Andy Schramm, Extemporaneous Speaking; and Elaine Wilson, Extemporaneous Speaking. Matt Nix ’07 qualified for the National Forensic league, competed in Philadelphia June
11-18 where he placed 30th out of 300 in Prose Reading. Coach Tom Sweeney was selected as a National Finalist Coach in Philadelphia at the NFL. He was one of 13 selected nationwide to judge dramatic interpretation.
Alex Kuehr ’05 and Nick Wilson ’06 helped lead Marian Forensics to unprecedented success at Grand Nationals in Milwaukee.
LONG-RANGE PLAN STRATEGIC STEPS TAKE SHAPE, CALL TO ACCOUNTABILITY non-for-profits and legal counsel.
The “Courage To Lead” Long-Range Plan for Marian Catholic High School takes on further definition with the development of specific, targeted strategic action plans – complete with deadlines, budgets, and benchmarks of achievement. The last of the strategic plans was approved by the Marian Catholic High School Advisory Board on June 7, 2005.
Some of the items have already moved forward, including the hiring of an additional college counselor and the implementation of several integrated technologies. The college counselor, funded through the tuition increase, joins two full-time and one part-time Counselors working only with second semester juniors and seniors and their families for college admission and scholarships. Plans for family access to technologies supporting the academic program are in process for the summer of 2005. (See related article below).
The detailed plans outline action to be taken in the following areas: Academics (curriculum, integrated technology, professional development, summer enrichment), College Counseling (parental involvement in total four-year program, additional staff, departmental outreach), Marketing/Recruitment (PR, technology, areas of expansion), Finance (endowment, financial aid policies, work programs), Facilities (cafeteria/meeting center, athletic and fine arts areas, security), Student Leadership (establishing a curricular and interdisciplinary program to reach all students).
The strategic plans flow from the Long-Range Plan which used the input of over 380 persons participating in February and March 2004 in focus groups at Marian Catholic. The plan, “Courage to Lead”, was published last September in the Annual Report. Subsequent committees picked up those mandates to articulate the specific steps which should be taken to move Marian forward. The gathering of input and interest from the Marian Catholic community (locally and nationally) will continue throughout the summer.
One Long-Range recommendation, the establishment of a foundation, was dropped by the Board because of subsequent input from other
NEW TECHNOLOGIES MAKE FAMILY ACCESS CRITICAL Special efforts to bring all Marian Catholic families “on-line” through discounted equipment and Internet access have taken on new urgency with the advent of programs to be implemented for the 2005-2006 school year.
Family Connection/Naviance Program for College Counseling “Family Connection is awesome...what a wealth of information,” was the parent feedback to Gerry O’Brien, Guidance Department Chair.” With the provision of email and passwords, parents and students can research, access, and contact colleges and universities; receive email reminders about college visits and deadlines; and, examine criteria for local and national scholarships. The Connection can also be used to research careers and college majors. What separates this system from the multiple data bases of the past is the seamless approach – and the convenience of the 24/7 access from at home for both parent and student.
The Dynix Library System continues to position the Marian Catholic High School Library as a premier research facility as students will be able to access college and State library materials from the comfort of their homes. The Marian web page/Dynix makes all indexes available and makes available home access of the book collection as well. “Anywhere the web is available, Marian’s Library will be also,” notes Library Director Sue Silander. “Students, many of whom have no time at school for research, can research at home, then come in, get the books they need and they are on their way...We are in good company with this (Horizon) upgrade...Lincoln Library, John Hopkins University and the University of Chicago, to name a few.” With the completely wireless environment at MCHS, laptops in the classroom can also be used for research.

Book Store On-Line While the economy of student-to-student book sales will continue to be encouraged, the success of last year’s on-line book sales means the long August “Book Day” lines outside the cafeteria will be a memory held last by those in school before 2004. The current vendor (MBS) accepts orders via phone, mail or Internet and mails texts to the students’ homes.
will be held on Monday, August 15, 2005 at Idlewild and Ravisloe Country Clubs. Information about golf or sponsorships may be obtained by calling Janet Noth at 708-755-6579.
PowerSchool Grades/Attendance Program In incremental steps during the 2005-2006 school year, parents will find themselves accessing their students’ grades in a secure environment – making the “progress report” an almost “real time” adventure. In addition, teachers can send email to a class, administration can send bulletins, and families can seek further information from instructors. 2

We want to continue to prepare those we teach for ministry and to be with those on the margins of society. With our lay brothers and sisters, we bring the Gospel to our students and to one another.” A member of Dominican leadership since 1997 on the General Council and as Vicaress, Sr. Rose Marie assumes her new leadership on June 26. She takes great pride in Marian Catholic, not only as an alumna, but through what she has experienced. “Over the years, I have met so many young people (from Marian) who are wonderful and I’ve always been proud of how the mission has been carried forward through them,” Sr. Rose Marie said. “I was especially proud at a Corporate Board meeting where the prayer was led by Marian students who had participated in the summer program for Dominican Preachers. At Marian, students experience St. Dominic’s four pillars of study, prayer, preaching and community life.” A graduate of Mundelein University and Loyola-Chicago (pastoral studies masters), Sr. Rose Marie made her profession in 1969. She has devoted herself to education and administration primarily in Illinois, although she was also a founding director of Poplar House Clinic, an outreach of St. Mary’s Hospital in Rogers, Ark. She served as Vice President of mission services for Northwest Arkansas - Sisters of Mercy Health System before her election to the Dominican general council in 1997. Leadership seems like a natural for the Marian Catholic graduate. “Marian has always prepared students to be leaders, and teachers have always challenged Marian students, thus preparing them for life,” Sr. Rose Marie explained. “With leadership skills, of which the foundations were learned at Marian, I feel blessed with gifts and I’m honored to share them with others.”

S H A N N O N R E I DY ' 9 0 N E W L OYO L A H O O P S B O S S Just as she has sent so many athletes on to college careers while building Marian Catholic’s women’s basketball program into a state power the last seven years, Shannon Reidy ’90 is moving on to the next level as
and I am excited for this challenge.” Marian will certainly miss Reidy who also worked in Athletics, Recruitment and at one time Alumni Relations for the school.
Shannon Reidy ’90 was recently named head women’s basketball coach at Loyola University.
she recently accepted the position of head women’s coach at Loyola University-Chicago. Reidy guided three straight Spartan teams to the IHSA Class AA Elite Eight, as well as a 28-3 record in the 2004-05 campaign. She joins Stefanie (Guillen) McAllister ’85 (Bradley University softball) and Donna DiBiase (Loyola softball) as Marian coaches to move directly from high school to Division I head coaching positions. With Reidy’s leadership, Marian improved its season win total in three of her first four seasons, culminating with a 31-2 mark and 2nd place in the Class AA state tournament in 2001-02. The Spartans also qualified for the Elite Eight in 2003 and captured the Class AA 4th place trophy in 2004 under Reidy, who will continue to guide Marian’s 2005 grade school summer camps. “The Loyola job reminds me of starting off at Marian seven years ago,” Reidy said. “The perception is that ‘success can’t be built here.’ Well, we proved that wrong at Marian, and I plan to do the same at Loyola. This is a dream come true, to begin my college coaching career in Chicago at Loyola University, one of the finest colleges in the country. The Jesuit tradition of ‘excellence’ sets the standard expected for successful student-athletes
“When Marian Catholic ‘stole’ alumna Shannon Reidy from the business world, who would know the impact this passionate professional woman would have on women’s sports here?” Marian Catholic President Sr. M. Paul McCaughey, O.P., said. “Loyola University is getting a class act. I’m personally grateful for Shannon’s vision and energy which are to continue into our summer programs and our choice for her successor. Shannon’s imprint is deep and solid, a lasting legacy of excellence, enthusiasm and hard work.” A 1990 graduate of Marian Catholic, Reidy has helped lead Marian to all of its Sweet 16 appearances, including a 1988 visit as a player. Success continued at the coaching helm, as Reidy compiled a 160-54 mark (.748) at her alma mater, including five 20-win campaigns, five regional titles, three sectional crowns and three visits to the IHSA Class AA Elite Eight. “Shannon has been a wonderful role model for the young women of Marian Catholic,” Marian Principal Sr. Kathleen Anne Tait, O.P., explained. “Her expertise as a coach and mentor will be missed. However, we couldn’t be more proud of one of our 4
alumni to have the opportunity that is being offered by Loyola University. Shannon has built a strong women’s basketball program at Marian. Marian looks forward to continued success under new coach Annie Basic, who played at St. Xavier and served as head coach at Illinois Institute of Technology. Younger sister Mary Basic '03 helped lead Marian to two Elite Eight visits and earned a scholarship at Northern Illinois University. A Lake Forest College alum and one of Marian’s all-time leading scorers, Reidy’s resume also includes sending several athletes on to college careers at all levels. Her most recent starting five all earned college scholarships. “The support and encouragement that I have received as head coach from the Marian administration, Dominican Sisters and entire community has been overwhelming. But the success of the program over the last four years is a direct reflection of the extremely talented student-athletes whom I have been lucky to coach. I have also been surrounded by an incredible staff who believed in building success here as well. “The hardest part about leaving Marian is leaving the current players who have become so important in my life. But like others who have left Marian, I hope to remain close to them all. I have to admit this has been an extremely emotional week as I have recently informed my players and staff at Marian that I will be moving on to this great opportunity at Loyola. The Marian community and my players have made me a better coach every day and they will forever be in my heart.”

The Marian community is fortunate to know that right now. One of Spartans’ finest did it again in late May, winning her third consecutive IHSA Class AA triple jump state championship. Taylor is the only athlete to accomplish this in Class AA and she now owns the third, fourth and 10th best triple jumps in state final history. One of Marian’s most humble student-athletes, Taylor will take her talents on scholarship to the University of Michigan. She is also a three-time state placer in the long jump and had a big hand

in leading the Marian women’s basketball team to 55 wins in the last two seasons and a Fourth Place state trophy in 2003-04. Along with fellow senior Rebecca Gustafson (also a roundball player), Taylor will be missed by a women’s track squad who also saw a handful of underclassmen qualify for the state level, including sophomore Melissa Gergel (ninth in the pole vault). “This marked the last hurrah for two outstanding seniors, Casey Taylor and Rebecca Gustafson,” praised coach Don McKillip, who has also had a hand in Marian Catholic’s two other IHSA state champions (1992 wrestler Mickey Griffin, 1993 football). “Both of these young women capped off their careers with their third trip to the IHSA state championships, and a combined ownership of 11 school records. They have surely left a lasting impression at MCHS.” Along the lines of record-setting performances, the Marian softball team eclipsed the 30-victory mark for the fourth consecutive year enroute to a record-tying 34-6 campaign. Senior pitcher Kathleen Jacoby helped lead Marian into the Class AA Sweet 16 with a string of 40 straight shut-out innings to start the postseason. The Spartans own an incredible 58-game winning streak in the East Suburban Catholic Conference, where they have captured five consecutive league crowns. While ESCC champ women’s track led the way in spring state qualifiers, there were others who represented Marian very well. Others to make the state mark in women’s track included senior Brea Banks (discus), sophomore Jenn Borowczak (two relays) and freshman Rachel Montoya (relay). On the men’s track side, juniors Cameron Williams (triple jump) and John Walter (3,200meter run) reached familiar ground with state-qualifying efforts. Men’s tennis reached the state plateau behind seniors Mike Kamradt and Mike Welton, and junior Luke Coughlan. In men’s volleyball, the Spartans (18-10) improved their win total for the third straight year and Sarah Padove ’05 helped lead Marian softball to its fifth straight ESCC crown and back-toback 34-win seasons.
senior Pat Richel was named co-MVP in the ESCC.

S R . S I M E O N L I V E S O N T H RO U G H H E R S P E C I A L F U N D The Emergency Tuition Aid Scholarship Fund, or “The Sr. Simeon Fund,” sprang from the real needs of families. As Treasurer from 1983 to 1999, Sr. Simeon often listened to families in crisis. Even as she offered advice on family budgets and continued to hold everyone accountable, Sr. Simeon was active in seeking funding for families in emergency situations. Often, Sr. Simeon would call upon members of her own family to assist with tuition, telling her brother, “We need to help.” Since Sr. Simeon’s death in 1999, others have
done the listening—but the narratives are no less compelling. During the 2004-2005 school year, $119,000 was gifted and provided to families in need. Historically, Marian Catholic High School students receive about $250,000 in financial aid annually from a special fund provided by the Springfield Dominican Sisters. This fund is administered by a third party agency for the determination of a family’s need and the amount awarded. Financial aid does not come from the school’s operating budget (i.e., other students’ tuition). The
Emergency Tuition Aid Program augments the financial aid fund of the Dominican Sisters and the limited number of Endowed Scholarships established by generous Marian Catholic High School donors and the Golf Endowment Classic. Marian Catholic High School is pleased to accept contributions to “The Sr. Simeon Fund” at any time. Your gift will help make a difference. Please call the Office for Institutional Advancement if you have questions (708-755-6579).

the Advancement Office (708-755-6579). Continued from Page 1...Scholarhip defines Class of 2005 the Marian Catholic Alumni Association. The Class of 2005 included two National Merit Finalists and 20 more that achieved at least National Achievement Commended status. The class included 62 Illinois State Scholars and was part of a group that numbered an all-time best 96 Advanced Placement Scholars from Marian. “Throughout our high school years, we have heard a plethora of lectures, absorbed, or at least attempted to absorb, thousands of facts, and spent countless hours studying,” Valedictorian Elizabeth Berger said. “Yet, most times, they were just words, words that we seemed not able to relate to and probably already have forgotten. “But, along the way, we learned something that could not be found in any textbooks; it could not be heard from any teacher’s instructions. Rather, we discovered it inside ourselves. Amidst the numbers and the facts, we learned who we are and the people we want to become. Our futures are as varied as we are. Most of us will be attending college,
others will enter the work force, and some the military. “Yet, although thousands of miles will separate us, we will always be bonded by our experiences at Marian.” Indeed, the Class of 2005 will move onto more than 110 colleges, institutions or professions. Ninety-seven percent of Marian’s graduates will move onto college, including 88 percent to four-year schools. Of the fouryear attendees, nearly 50 percent will continue in private education. In essence for the Class of 2005, graduation represents a new beginning as well as a completion of accomplishment. “I encourage all of you to focus on the moment and exercise your best judgment,” Senior Class President Charlie Wright advised. “Listen to God and listen to others. For the rest of your lives, especially for the next four years, I lay down two more challenges for all of you.
‘First, honor your father and mother because they are the closest people to God we will ever have, and second, I challenge all of you to be a continuing example of love, faith and purity to everyone.” An overflow crowd at the convention center and special Honors Night and Baccalaureate Mass proved just how proud Marian Catholic is of its new graduates. “With the aid of your Catholic education, you have received the greatest of gifts...this gift of knowing Christ,” President Sr. M. Paul McCaughey ’67 quoted Pope John Paul II. “Be grateful to your parents and to the community of the church for making possible, through many sacrifices, your Catholic education. “People have placed a lot of hope in you and now they look forward to your collaboration in giving witness to Christ. The world needs you because it needs Christ and you belong to Christ.” The call comes for 7.3 million reasons and then some.

STUDENTS ENVISION FUTURE THROUGH CAREER DAY
ADVISORY BOARD PROFILE
Marian Catholic sophomores and freshmen got the opportunity to tap into their futures on Monday, May 2, during the school’s annual Career Day. The event featured more than 36 speakers listed below, discussing their fields and daily job responsibilities. Many of the careers were discussed by Marian alumni speakers, as students had the opportunity to discuss and explore three different fields of their choice. While Career Day is an annual event, Marian offers its Career Mentor program year-round, as Alumni Relations will arrange a “day on the job” for current students with a Marian alum. For more information, please contact the Marian Alumni Relations office at 708-755-6579 or via email at alumni@marianchs.com.
