SR. JUDINE HILBING, O.P., ASSUMES LEADERSHIP AS NEXT PRESIDENT Sr. Rose Marie Riley, O.P. ’67, Prioress General of the Dominican Sisters of Springfield, along with fellow members of the executive leadership team, recently announced that Sr. Judine Hilbing, O.P. will succeed long-time President Sr. M. programs and services already in place and work to further the mission of Marian Catholic. “Marian Catholic has such a wonderful reputation for excellence that I am truly excited about the opportunity to become a part of this outstanding high school,” Sr. Judine explained. “As a life-time educator, I continue to find joy in witnessing the success and development of our youth.” Committed to Catholic education, Sr. Judine holds a Master of Arts degree in elementary education with a concentration in administration from the University of Illinois in Champaign, as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education from St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa. “Sr. Judine has 23 years experience in elementary school administration, with 17 of these years in the Chicago Archdiocese,” Sr. Rose Marie said. “Her experience in planning, her collaborative leadership style, her focus on communication, and her organizational skills will be strong assets for Marian Catholic. Thank you Sr. Mary Paul! In her sixteen year tenure at Marian Catholic, Sr. Mary Paul has been a gift of vision and vitality to our school community. Marian Catholic’s facilities and spirit have grown under her leadership. Sr. Mary Paul’s mark will be left not only on the buildings and programs, but especially in the hearts of thousands of students, families and staff members whose lives she has touched. To honor the gift that Sr. Paul has been to the community, and in keeping with her wishes of no personal gifts, the Marian Catholic community has established The Sr. Mary Paul Endowment. Left to her discretion, this endowment will allow Sr. Paul to honor what is closest to her heart – the students, faculty and families of Marian Catholic High School… The Advancement Office, through Mary Moffatt and Sr. Kathleen Anne Tait, will oversee the fund process. More information will be shared in the mail and online. The Sr. Mary Paul Endowment will be formally presented to her at the MCHS 50th Anniversary Celebration on September 6, 2008.

This past school year, Sr. Teresa, Marian’s Director of Campus Ministry, visited 133 alumni at 33 different colleges! The “Sr. Teresa’s Travels” program began two years ago. In that short period of time, she has met with a total of 293 alums on 53 different college campuses! Campuses recently visited: Butler, Ball State, University of Iowa, Iowa State, Drake, Monmouth, Murray State, Southern Illinois, University of Georgia, Spellman, Morehouse, Clark-Atlanta, Georgia Tech, Carthage, Marquette, Carroll College, Milwaukee School of Engineering, Tulane University, Xavier University, University of Mississippi, Bradley, DePaul and Illinois-Chicago. Most unique experience: While visiting Rachel McDowell ’04 at Southern Mississippi, she asked if I was going to visit her cousin, Blanton, while in New Orleans. Blanton had been displaced from his home after Hurricane Katrina and attended Marian Catholic for the balance of that school year. I was able to have dinner with him and a few alums that evening. “Blanton was so excited to see someone from Marian that he hugged me three times! He really misses Marian!” Ali DeJong ’03, also joined us for dinner. During her spring break from Notre Dame, she pitched a tent in the 9th ward of New Orleans to help victims of the hurricane. Since graduating from Notre Dame, Ali has been working for Catholic Charities, helping to rebuild homes in New Orleans. This school year, Sr. Teresa plans to visit: Pittsburgh, Colorado, Gunnison College, Western Illinois, Quincy, Arizona and likely many more. Metro Alumni & Friends Gathering, June 2008

MCHS Metro Alumni and Friends branched into the Lincoln Park neighborhood at McDunna's for our second annual gathering...60 plus made their way to '81 alum John McGarry's place on West Fullerton to visit & network. Starting another tradition, our own Sr. M. Paul McCaughey’67, new Superintendent of Chicago Catholic Schools, was our first guest speaker. Sr. Paul shared that her cabbie was surprised to learn her destination was an Irish Pub! With that, she toasted the group, and the efforts of the Metro Alumni committee for bringing everyone together for the evening. While enjoying the Cubs game on television and the music in the background, everyone was informed that, indeed, MCHS is planning a 50th Anniversary Gala downtown! New people “stepped up” to be on the Metro Alum committee to help us expand our reach. Everyone agreed that the get togethers are so much fun, that in the future, it would be fine to include a small cover charge to help the Alumni Association sponsor the gathering. If you are interested in joining us next year, please check the website in early spring for time and location. If you would like a personal invitation, please e-mail Carol Burke Swanson (cswanson@marianchs.com). Continued on page 14 4
RACE DAY AUTOMATIC TRADITION FOR SPARTAN DERBY CONTINGENT “Mike Durkin and Mac probably have the best overall record of the group when it comes to picking winners,” according to Bill Murphy. “With us, it’s mostly about bragging rights, nothing more.” Murphy continued, “And somehow, Mike has ended up in the Winner’s Circle on several occasions. He just manages to get in and acts like he belongs there.” Murphy recalls a St. Agnes eighth grade field trip to Hawthorne Race Track that started him on his path of nearly 40 years in and around the horseracing industry. “Father McKiernan took a bunch of us because we had heard that Hawthorne was nicer than Washington Park. We’d been riding our bikes to Washington Park and wanted to see another track.” At 15 and 16 years old, the guys decided to go to their first Kentucky Derby, taking a $36 flight from O’Hare to Louisville without their parents’ knowledge. None had flown before, and a nervous Pat Eagan was looking in the seat-back pocket in front of him and asked Murphy what that little paper bag was for. Murphy explained that it was for passengers who got sick during take-off or landing. Eagan looked at the bag, then asked the elderly woman sitting next to him if he could have her bag too, saying “This one just won’t be big enough!” Back at Marian, Murphy, a self-described “wise-guy,” was reprimanded by Sr. Frances Clare for reading a racing form in Religion class. He couldn’t help it; it was in his blood. Having started out as a hot-walker and groom, Bill Murphy’s love of horseracing has evolved into a 35-year career. He is currently the President and General Manager of Gulfstream Park in Hollywood, Florida. Gulfstream is where the last three Kentucky Derby winners (including Big Brown) have been raised and trained. Murphy has missed only three Kentucky Derby races since that first trip as a teen. In 1970, he was stationed in Viet Nam and later, he was working at a track in Florida and couldn’t make the trip. Even today, Bill would rather be with his Marian friends at the Derby than in any fancy box seats. “We’ve been together all these years, looking out for one another the whole time. I have the best time with these guys!” Though probably not a complete list of all the guys who have made the trip at one time or another, these are the Marian grads and friends (and even one former faculty member) who have participated over the years: Joe Buishas ’69, Tom Chemasko ’70, Dan Corradetti ’70, Dan Cull ’70, Mike Durkin ’70, Pat Eagan, Gary Finnin (former baseball coach), Jim Flamini, Jeff Goss ’69, Mark Helsel ’69, Rich Klupchak ’70, Steve Kubisak ’70, James Lupien ’69, Tom Martello ’78, Bill Murphy ’68, Peter Palanca ’69, Mike Pauley ’76, Tony Perozzi ’76, Frank Pignotti ’70, Rodney Ross ’70, Frank Santilli ’71, Frank Santori ’69, Scott Scampini ’70, Mark Schrementi ’70, Ray Schulze ’78, Jack Sims ’70, Bill Slavin ’76, Bobby Towle ’73, Dan Towle ’69, George Towle ’71, Gilbert Towle ’67, James Towle ’78, Mike Ward ’70, Tom Zager ’70, Mike Ziegler ’70.
Displaying their Marian Catholic spirit from the clubhouse box on the first turn at Churchill Downs on Derby Day 2008 are (left-right): Dan Ekhart (Mike Durkin’s son-in-law), Gordon “Mac” McKerral ’70, Bill “Murph” Murphy ’68, Michael “The Governor” Durkin ’70 and Dan “Dan-O” Corradetti ’70. Group members later signed the banner which will be displayed at various events throughout Marian’s 50th Anniversary year.
Friendship. History. Tradition. For nearly 40 years, a group of Marian grads has been making an annual pilgrimage to Churchill Downs, site of the first jewel in the Triple Crown of horseracing, the Kentucky Derby. This year was no different, with a number of Spartans attending the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby. Two things remain constant with this group of alumni – everyone knows where to find each other at Churchill Downs among the 150,000 spectators without so much as a phone call, and their ties to Marian Catholic remain as strong as ever. They didn’t start out going to the Derby, though. During high school, members of the group got the racing bug when Bill “Murf the Turf ” Murphy ’68 would take a carload of guys to the old Washington Park track in Homewood. They would stand outside and watch harness racing and thoroughbreds through the fence because they were too young to get in. But, to get a sense of the history behind this group, one has to just sit and listen to the stories. “I met Mike Durkin ’70 when we were first graders at St. Agnes,” says Dan Corradetti ’70. “We’ve been close friends all these years, through marriages, jobs, kids and everything else.” Gordon “Mac” McKerral ’70 first met Mike in the caddy yard at Idlewild Country Club when they both were Marian freshmen. “There was this guy sitting apart from the rest of the caddies who were playing cards, rolling dice, and pitching nickels, gambling with their earnings. I noticed he was reading a racing form. Mike said to me, ‘How much did you lose over there with those guys?’ I told him I’d lost five of the ten bucks I’d earned that morning. He said, ‘What if I could take your five bucks and turn it into fifty?’ I was hooked. Whether it was Washington Park or Balmoral, we always found a way to get to the races and place our bets.”

STUDENT ATHLETES REACH NEW HEIGHTS
Matt Goedke ’09

Spring of 2008 saw the men’s tennis and women’s soccer teams reach great heights. At the same time, senior Mitchell Erickson literally vaulted to great heights. Following his state championship in 2007, Oklahoma-bound Erickson turned in an effort of 16-3 in the pole vault to finish second in the IHSA state meet this year. After a regular season highlighted by winning the Marian Invitational, the Spartan women’s soccer team earned the #6 seed in the Lincoln-Way Central Sectional and began a brilliant post-season run. Marian avenged an earlier ESCC loss to rival Joliet Catholic to open regional play, then stunned #1 seed Lincoln-Way Central to capture the regional crown. The Spartans then knocked off #4 seed Lincoln-Way East, before eventually bowing to HomewoodFlossmoor in the sectional championship match. “The season will be one I will never forget,” sixth-year coach Nasser Shahtaji said. “I can still picture the happy faces of my players after winning the regional by defeating #1 seed Lincoln-Way Central. I had a good feeling about this season when our players, led by senior captain Kasey Cartwrights, and the guidance of my assistant Marvin Rodas, decided to entirely
commit themselves to this season. I am very proud to coach these young women who proved, as the Adidas ad says, ‘nothing is impossible.’ ” For the first time since 1980 and the second time in school history, the Spartan tennis team advanced all four entries to the IHSA state tournament. Led by repeat sectional singles champion Tim Stanis ’08, Marian captured second place in its own sectional. The Spartans were also represented at state by junior singles player Matt Goedke, senior doubles team Eddie SemikSean Daley and juniors doubles tandem Brandon Tilton-Enyi Okebugwu. Tim Stanis ’08, senior class Valedictorian, was also named East Suburban Catholic Conference singles player of the year and posted a 3-2 record at the state tournament. Softball moved to the brink of a huge milestone – 600 wins – as an East Suburban Catholic Conference championship and first IHSA regional crown since 2005 left the program at 599-279 all-time. The diamond Spartans concluded the year at 29-6. The women’s track squad continued its run of IHSA state qualifiers, as sophomore Tahsha Mitchell represented the Spartans at state in the high jump.

When the Marian Catholic Endowment Golf Classic tees off for the 19th time on Monday, August 18 at Idlewild and Ravisloe Country Clubs, the field of more than 200 golfers will include quite an array of personalities. Some alumni and friends have participated in the event for nearly two decades! At the same time, younger alumni, establishing themselves in the business world, have made the Classic a popular venue for contacts and to re-establish friendships while enjoying a day away from the office. “It is a lot of fun to hear old stories from the people who first played in this event,” according to Bob Gromala ’97, E.G.C. Committee Member. “I have also learned a lot from those people. It has been great for networking and understanding what resources there are out there not only for the future of the event, but even on a professional level.” In some respects, the event has become another unofficial Marian Catholic Reunion for many friends who only see one another annually. “It is great to see the passion to help Marian form the players in this event. It is almost like a private club. The tickets are limited...it is so much fun. It is one of the most lucrative fundraisers I have ever been involved with, and with great prizes, great food, for a great cause,” Gromala added. “As a young alum, it gave me a chance to give back in a fun and rewarding way. I look forward to it every year. I would also not be able to play at these great golf courses if it were not for this event. The value you get, especially as a young alum, cannot be matched.” While The Courage to Lead Capital Campaign has brought some major and immediate enhancements to Marian’s campus on the threshold of a 50th Anniversary celebration, the Endowment Classic remains a model of consistency for fund-raising and friend-raising. Each year, co-chairs Greg Underwood and Mark Peifer ’81, and Classic participants, help to benefit Marian Catholic through student scholarship endowments. To date more than $1 million has been posted to the E.G.C. scholarship fund. “There is nothing said that when you raise money for a great cause, that you should not have any fun,” Gromala noted. “The 9-hole scramble in the morning has become a fierce competition, which is a great start to the day. This event is a blast and I will be part of it as long as I can!”
IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN! ANOTHER MILESTONE IS FAST APPROACHING… We would like to invite you back to Marian to renew old acquaintances and celebrate friendships, passages and memories!

NEWEST REUNION IDEA SPURRED BY CYBERSPACE – by Tim O’Hea ’63, Founding Four Committee Member Have you ever heard of a high school reunion that has gone on for 9 months 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? How about a reunion that you can attend in your pajamas? Well MCHS classes of 1962 and 1963 have just such a reunion currently in progress thanks to the wonderful world of email. It was all started in the late summer of 2007 by my good friend Ed Brown ’62 who had about 10 classmates, one of which was my wife Mary Ann (Ormsby) O'Hea ’62, on his personal email list. Ed's thought was to somehow generate interest in his class’ 50th reunion by updating Marian's list of their classmates with better or more current information. He obtained the list from the alumni office and then split it up among 8 classmates. He had them each try to contact, either by letter or email, everyone on their lists. He also used the website “peoplefinders.com” to locate classmates who were not on the list. What ultimately developed was a list of about 50 or 60 classmates who began to reconnect through their emails. There was a very strong group of about 10 or so who were from St. Joe’s in Homewood who began conversing on an almost daily basis and began to share photos and stories from their grade school and high school years. No one knows exactly how the idea of sharing their bios began, but I assume that when a new classmate joined the reunion someone asked what he or she had been doing since high school and they wrote back with a story of their life since graduation. Then it just exploded from there. When I saw how much fun Mary Ann was having, I decided to see if I could get my class of 1963 interested as well. The initial list of classmates’ emails that I started with was about 90. After my initial invitation to join this email reunion went out we had about 65 who were interested in participating. Some classmates didn’t want to participate or didn’t want their email accounts to get clogged and that was understandable, so we eliminated their names. What most people seem to like about this reunion is that they don't have to think about losing weight or buying new clothes to attend. I cannot possibly express the myriad of emotions that these bio’s have generated among the alumni in our 2 classes. They have run the gamut from hysterical to heartwarming to heartbreaking. One of the difficult things that we learned was that we (class of 1963) had lost 23 classmates from an original class of 190. Roy Carlson ’63 sent out an incredible tribute to a very close friend and classmate Denny Rehberg ’63 who passed away a few years ago. A few classmates in distant states have found that they live only a few miles from each other and didn't realize it. Others have shown a tremendous amount of courage while dealing with adversity. This has been a lot of fun and not nearly as much work as you might imagine. Once you have a pretty good list of your classmates and send out an initial invitation, it’s just a matter of getting everyone to “respond all” so that all on the list are included. Aside from the pleasure of reconnecting with high school friends, I think that the biggest benefit of this email reunion will be the quality of the time that we will spend together at the Founding Four Reunion on September 12 & 13. If this sounds like something that you might want to begin for your class, I recommend it highly. It will give you a chance to rekindle some friendships, maybe begin a few new ones, and make the next time that you all gather together much more meaningful. Cheers! A stalwart supporter of so many Marian Catholic activities and events, and one of the biggest fans of the 7-time Grand National Champion Band program, Walt Edmisten, alumni parent, has taken over as web master of the Marian Band pages on our web site. Edmisten had heart surgery in early May. The entire Marian community sends well wishes for a speedy, full recovery so his smiling face may be seen at countless events this 50th Anniversary year. Edmisten has revamped the Marian Band web pages to feature up-to-date schedules, results and information. Along with coverage of recent Symphonic Band successes like a Grand Championship at the Illinois State University contest and “Honor Band” at the University of Illinois Superstate, Edmisten will document the band’s successes through highlights and colorful photos. Please visit the band’s new and improved web page at: www.marianchs.com/band/band.html

Metro Alumni & Friends Gathering, June 2008 Continued from page 4 Throughout the evening, we enjoyed lots of laughs together. Some younger alums could not believe that they could “get a beer on MCHS!” A good natured Todd Toborg ’88 was “ok with the pink Spartan pajamas!” business-card raffle prize as was an alumna who won two golfers fees for the Nineteenth Annual Endowment Golf Classic this August 18th. Jim McAteer ’89, got the pubbers’ attention with reference to some Sox and Cubs tickets. Erroneous, but it kept us quiet for the drawings! Float that prize by the committee for next year. Again, it was nice to catch up, meet new people by occupation and geography rather than alum year. So, we’re on for next year. In the meantime keep these special dates in mind: • 50th Anniversary opens September 6, with campus carnival for families, Mass, and an adult evening reception with live bands, beer tent, complimentary dinner and (donation) wine and beer bar • 50th Anniversary Trip to Springfield, March 28, unique capital tour and special lecture at Lincoln Museum and visit to Dominican Motherhouse...party with the Sisters • 50th Anniversary Gala, April 25, School of the Art Institute Ballroom; limited tickets so call 708-755-6579 to request an invitation. A boundless good time for sure and in our Chicago neighborhood!
We’re on a Metro rock and roll! Stay in touch.
