DEDICATION OF MARIAN CATHOLIC LEADERSHIP CENTER

Former Advisory Board members John Ferrari ’63, Pat Dolan ’72, and current Advisory Board Chair Charlie Gallagher ’77 surprised Sr. Paul and her mother, Dorothy, with the dedication announcement.

It is with deep love and gratitude that we honor our Dominican friend, Sr. Mary Paul McCaughey of the 1967 Class of Marian Catholic High School. Sr. Mary Paul has served students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, and many friends for sixteen years, leading this high school community to new heights of growth and success with her keen intellect, her generous heart, and her compassionate care. With steadfast commitment to the Gospel, Sister has promoted Catholic education within the Dominican tradition and has extended the grace and peace of her beloved St. Paul. Although the formal dedication occurred at the 50th Anniversary Gala on April 25, it bears repeating to the entire Marian community the dedication of the…Sister M. Paul McCaughey O.P. Marian Catholic Leadership Center “Serving the mission of Marian Catholic is an imperative for me, simply because I have found Christ at Marian Catholic since walking in its halls as a freshman in 1963. The generous bright spirits of the Dominican Sisters were a part of my vocation; the teachers and staff who took the time with me as a student, with whom I was a peer in 1983-84 and worked with later as a principal, modeled humor, competence and scholarship; the parents who shared their precious children in every generation mirrored the love, concern, and sacrifice of my own parents. Through its fifty years, Marian Catholic High School’s mission remains what it has always been: to help young people become adults who will live the Truth in love. For me, that charge will never grow old. With our solid foundation, our wings–uplifted by God’s own Spirit–stretch wide and strong.”

CLASS OF 2009 GRADUATION

Sr. M. Paul McCaughey, O.P. ’67

In a time when the world is struggling through economic woes, graduates of Marian continue to prove that the value of a Marian Catholic High School education remains on the rise. The Class of 2009 numbering 397 crossed the stage on May 18 for Marian’s 48th Commencement, having earned more than $15.4 million in college scholarships. The number, which may still grow, easily represents the most ever for a Marian graduating class. Filled with honors and accomplishment, the Class of 2009 will be expected to make an impact on the world and future generations. “To you will be given the challenge to stabilize a world economy, to bring peace to a troubled world and to free the world of intolerance and prejudice, hatred and greed,” President Sister Judine Hilbing, O.P. explained in her graduation address. “You will say these are obligations too huge to be accomplished, the unfinished business of a previous generation…and you are right. But ethical leadership, so much the hallmark of a Marian Catholic Continued on page 2

education, calls you forth to do your part to make the world a better place.” The most recent to join the Marian Catholic alumni of more than 15,500 is certainly armed to make an impact on society. The first full class to complete Marian’s copyrighted Leadership Program participated in voluntary service at nearly 100 percent. The group also includes two National Merit Scholars and 25 more who received National Merit/Achievement recognition. Valedictorian Christina Brow, daughter of Marian Theology teacher Tom Brow, perceives this graduation class to be prepared for what lies ahead. “I believe the Class of 2009 will persevere and continue to be Scholars with Souls who make up the Body of Christ,” Brow said. “By attending Marian, we have been taught to have faith, both in ourselves and in others. As we venture out in the world, we must continue to have faith and believe we can make a difference. “We must follow Gandhi’s advice and ‘be the change we wish to see in the world.’ ” This class certainly made a difference in the classroom, where the Class of 2009 helped compose a group that made up 98 Advanced Placement Scholars, among the best in Chicagoland. As well, 66 students had qualifying criteria as Illinois State Scholars. While the future is at hand, it’s important for this group to relish its accomplishments of the past. “We have transformed from naïve starry-eyed freshmen to worldly, passionate, purposeful young adults,” Class President Erin Reed reflected. “Our experience at Marian Catholic High School brought about this transformation. It happened in classrooms, on a field or on a court, on a stage, on Kairos, or on a Service Club outing. “We can take comfort in knowing that we can return to those memories that gave us such a calming satisfaction of knowing yourself and believing you are meant for greatness.” Along with the distinction as the pioneer class of Marian’s Leadership Program, the Class of 2009 experienced Marian’s 50th Anniversary in its senior year and enjoyed a time of great progress as well. The class will always be known as one of the first to experience Marian’s state-of-the-art Leadership Center and Student Union, and FieldTurf ™ in Spartan Stadium. While the physical enhancements will be memorable, it’s the consistency and stability of the Marian family that helped pave the way for the amazing $15-plus million in college scholarships. “This ceremony reflects the love, encouragement, heartache and the constant support of you, their families and friends,” Principal Sr. Kathleen Tait acknowledged. “In every stroke of ink on each Marian Catholic diploma, there is the imprint of teachers, mentors, family members who have supported you, motivated you…prodded you and learned with you these last four years. “As you graduate from Marian Catholic and enter this liminal time of potential and possibilities, know that all of us – your families, your friends and all of us at Marian – share your pride and see your potential. And we entrust you to the One who is the Truth, the One who will guide you and the One who will always be with you. May God Bless you abundantly!” Abundant in honor and accomplishment, the Class of 2009 will strive to be leaders of tomorrow.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION LAUNCHES NEW TRADITION AT MCHS

As the year-long 50th Anniversary celebration of Marian Catholic came to a close, a new alumni tradition has sprung forth through the combined efforts of the the Alumni Relations Office, the Alumni Association and the Advisory Board. On May 4, with the help of the Campus Ministry office, a Senior Farewell Pinning ceremony to welcome the class of 2009 into the Alumni Association became the highlight of an all-school Mass. To complete the circle/cycle that welcomes

the Freshmen to Marian Catholic at a Mass beginning each school year, Seniors processed into the West Gym and were seated, not in their usual bleacher spots, but in chairs arranged on the floor. At the end of Mass, Father O’Mara, campus chaplain, welcomed Vince Krydynski ’81, former Alumni Association President and member of the MCHS Advisory Board, to address the senior class and introduce this special initiation into the alumni ranks. “As we close-out the 50th Anniversary celebration,” Krydynski said, “the MCHS family is starting a new tradition. Beginning with the class of 2009 and continuing every graduating class hereafter, seniors will receive an alumni pin. This will serve to connect you to the fifty years of graduates before you and the tens of thousands of graduates to come after you.” Krydynski continued, “As freshmen, you were welcomed into the school family. Today, I welcome you into the MCHS alumni family. It is a very exclusive club with approximately 15,000 members. The membership is strong, very proud and growing.” Father O’Mara blessed the alumni pins, then Vince Krydynski ’81, and Carol Burke Swanson ’81, Director of Alumni Relations,

pinned Senior Class President Erin Reed ’09 and Student Council President Roland Lim ’09. Alumni Association Co-Chair Colleen O’Neill Ranieri ’83 along with several Marian alumni faculty members pinned the rest of the senior class. Faculty Alumni of Marian Catholic are: Mike Carlson ’91, Samantha Chapleau ’02, Kiki McDonnell Cifelli ’74, Jennifer Clifford ’88, Andy DeLaurentis ’95, Lisa Yock Denty ’87, Kerri Evans ’96, Lorron Grady Farani ’62, Jessica Gehm ’99, James Hudzik ’65, Kevin Kelly ’80, Lisa Kowynia ’87, Tom Lachcik ’96, Allen Marazas ’64, Dave Mattio ’66, Kathleen Mesterharm ’01, Jennifer Pasyk ’92, Nick Rohn ’92, Erin Falucskai Russell ’02, Nancy Schwab Werner ’83, and Vince Zerante ’70. The alumni pins will continue to be given out as alums return to campus for reunions, meetings, events, and as the alumni relations staff comes in touch with alums throughout the course of the year. The sentiment and symbolism of the alumni pin has been quickly embraced not only by the senior class but especially by the alums who clearly delight in the recognition and memories it engenders. Another source and tradition of Spartan Pride!

Sweet Home Chicago was the song which appropriately closed the 50th Anniversary Gala celebration at the School of the Art Institute Ballroom on April 25. From the pageantry of Marian’s world-class Color Guard welcoming guests through the presentation of the Dominican Legacy Pillar awards, to guests dancing the night away, Marian, with a Host Committee of 60 and with the help of alumna Susan (Lewandowski) Cordogan ’92 and her Big City Events team, certainly knew how to throw a party! Members of the Marian Catholic Marching Band, led by Sandra Denton ’09 on tuba, enticed the guests from cocktail hour on the mezzanine to dinner on the main floor with their rendition of “Hey! Hey Baby!” a popular sing-a-long tune showcased at the end of Marian’s halftime performances. Lively conversations through dinner gave way to ceremony when the Dominican Legacy Pillar awards were announced and presented by President Sr. Judine Hilbing, O.P., and Dominican Prioress General Sr. Rose Riley, O.P. ’67. As the last award was bestowed, the team of Pat Dolan ’72, Charlie Gallagher ’77, and current parent Nick Zagotta got the crowd’s attention, bantering back and forth about certain directives that former President Sr. Paul had given them prior to her leaving last June. With gleeful abandon, the “wise guys” stated that “now they could do whatever they wished” and with that, former Advisory Board Chair Pete Kroner announced that the Leadership Center will now bear the name Sr. M. Paul McCaughey, O.P. Marian Catholic Leadership Center. A visual of the new façade appeared on the 20-foot screen and a stunned Sister Paul gazed in disbelief. The crowd erupted in a standing ovation as Sister made her way to the microphone for a heartfelt “thank you” to everyone. If that excitement wasn’t enough, alumni parent Rick Thiernau, a Host Committee member, took the stage and conducted a live auction of the newly unveiled Jack Simmerling pen and ink collage of the Marian campus, commissioned by Host Committee members Tim and Eileen Bergen, which included the renamed Leadership Center. As the bidding climbed higher and higher, all eyes were on the final bidder, John Ferrari ’63, whose bid of $10,000 (earmarked for the Sr. Simeon Fund for emergency tuition assistance) won the print. John then promptly gifted the original Simmerling to Marian Catholic for everyone to enjoy. Dancing to music provided by the Dennis Keith Experience followed with Sisters and the rest of the Marian family joining in. Silent Auction winners were announced with those proceeds benefitting the Sr. Simeon Fund. A huge “Thank You!” goes out to all who participated in the 50th Anniversary Gala, including host committee members, guests, our honored Dominican Legacy Pillars, and anyone who played a part in bringing to a close Marian Catholic’s year-long 50th Anniversary celebration. 4

DOMINICAN LEGACY PILL AR AWARDS When St. Dominic founded the Order of Preachers, he rooted his life and that of his companions in what are identified by the Dominican Sisters as the four pillars of Study, Prayer, Community, and Preaching. These pillars are foundational to the strength of the Order and the success of its mission. Marian Catholic High School, founded by the Dominicans Sisters of Springfield, has been blessed with individuals whose lives exemplify the spirit of St. Dominic. Through their faith, scholarship, sense of community, and witness to Gospel values, these individuals have become pillars of strength for Marian Catholic. In establishing the Dominican Legacy Pillar Award, Marian Catholic High School and the Dominican Sisters recognize men and women who have truly served as pillars, supporting and sustaining the very structure of the mission of Marian Catholic High School. The Dominican Legacy Pillar Awards were bestowed during the 50th Anniversary Gala on April 25, 2009.

Melissa Sage Fadim The sciences and arts have advanced harmoniously through the efforts of Melissa Sage Fadim. Recognizing science both within and beyond Marian Catholic, Melissa sponsored the Science Lab initiative and the Dominican Greenhouse project. Faithfully fostering the creativity of students in Marian Catholic’s visual arts and music programs, Melissa, with Sage Foundation, is a leading benefactor of our future Marian Catholic Broadcasting Center. By inviting our Marian musicians into her home to meet artists from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Melissa’s gracious hospitality again expanded the lives of our students. When later these symphony musicians provided musical clinics for our award-winning band, the tradition of sharing the gift of artistic excellence continued for these fortunate students, and through their legacy, to future Marian musicians. As a member of the Founding Council for the Student Leadership Program and a sponsor of the Endowment Golf Classic since 1992, Melissa continues to foster student leadership. Clearly, Melissa Sage Fadim is a strong pillar, supporting the excellence of both art and science at Marian Catholic High School. “Marian Catholic was an important bridge in the lives of my daughters. It has been my pleasure to help the Dominican Sisters strengthen Marian as a school of excellence in the Southland which offers academics and fine arts programs national in scope and reputation.” – Melissa Sage Fadim

The Ferrari Family With the leadership of John Ferrari, class of 1963, the Farrari Family has maintained a strong presence at Marian’s major milestones. The Ferrari’s are Endowed Scholarship Benefactors, former Advisory Board members, Founding Council Members in the Leadership Program, and leaders in multiple Capital Campaigns. Honoring the loving memory of their parents, Art and Lucille, vibrant inspirations of entrepreneurship and philanthropy for ABART Properties Corporation in Scottsdale, Arizona, the Ferrari Family recently honored Lucille by sponsoring The Lucille Ferrari Spartan Shop in the Marian Catholic Leadership Center. John has served and challenged the mission of education at Marian Catholic High School. As an alumnus, he represents the primary stakeholders in realizing and maintaining our vision. At Marian Catholic, he has walked the halls as a student, attended dances, served on reunion committees, negotiated with contractors, and has been a working leader on the Advisory Board and two capital campaigns. John is a Pillar firmly grounded as a mentor for the next generation. “We understood from the teachings of our parents and the wonderful Dominican Sisters that we have a responsibility as Roman Catholics to provide assistance to ensure Marian’s goal to educate the following generations of citizens and leaders.” – John Ferrari ’63

Bill and Sharon Kiehl Bill and Sharon Kiehl, former and current Advisory Board members, have provided leadership during multiple campaigns. Through their businesses, Liberty Creative Solutions and Financial Data Solutions, both in Tinley Park, the Kiehl’s have been generous to Marian in a variety of capacities. Life-long friends, Bill and Sharon, each a pillar for the other, continually practice the corporate promise of Bill’s company, “We listen well to your goals and objectives.” Indeed, their listening and dialogue with the Marian Catholic community has resulted in gifting our school for the last 15 years with the most creative, thoughtful and state-of-theart designed and printed publications that have become the hallmark of two successful capital campaigns, and a special launch of Command Performance, the endowment fund and performance program established to improve and replace Marian Catholic band instruments. Bill’s and Sharon’s understated generosity have helped to shape and deliver the message of the importance of funding our education mission that informs and motivates our Marian Catholic family. Bill continues to mentor our young academics, especially the artists, giving them opportunities to experience the mechanics and creativity of printing design and his artistic vision helps guide budding artists. “We believe that the Dominican Sisters’ mission of teaching the spiritual, moral, ethical and educational skills to the students of Marian Catholic High School is worthy to sustain our long-term commitment of time, talent and monetary considerations.” – Bill and Sharon Kiehl

Jim and JoAnne Morrison Jim and JoAnne Morrison, loyal benefactors of the Marian Catholic Endowed Scholarship Program and former Advisory Board members, are deeply involved in the Founding Council Leadership Program. Believing that the challenging academic curriculum offered at Marian creates a foundation for lifetime success in any walk of life, Jim and JoAnne established the annual Academic Achievement Award and have been consistent supporters of school programs, enjoying especially their role as band parents. Jim and JoAnne Morrison represent the entrepreneurial spirit – a pillar dug deep with their commitment to assist young people of academic promise. The Morrison Family Scholarship, established in 1996, one of the first, has provided the Marian Catholic experience for 21 scholars, fortified by academic excellence, personal achievements, and spiritual awareness and growth. “The Dominican Sisters promote an academic environment that challenges and encourages the students, giving them a good foundation to assume leadership in their own walk of life. We are delighted to be involved with the students through the Morrison Family Scholarship, established to aid students with financial need who have demonstrated leadership abilities, dedication to service and academic excellence. We have been abundantly blessed by our God and through His goodness, we have been honored to do this work.” – Jim and JoAnne Morrison

Ed and Betty Savant Ed and Elizabeth Savant are Endowed Scholarship benefactors and former Advisory Board members. Ed and Betty Savant’s commitment to Marian Catholic High School testifies in action their dedication, embodied in Ed’s words, “...to the influence and empowerment of Catholic high school education.” Following his passion, Ed, in his second career, became an educated expert in the burgeoning field of financial planning, not only promoting a “fiscally sound direction,” but by being the first to establish an endowment fund to award Marian Catholic tuition scholarships. Ed and Betty, in 1995, through the first capital campaign, established The Erman C. Savant & Lawrence J. Cassidy Families Memorial Scholarship, honoring their fathers who worked so hard for their families without the benefit of higher education. The Savant-Cassidy Scholarship has provided 13 Marian students with fully endowed scholarships. “Betty and I are happy to remain active in the Marian Catholic Community. We wanted to help ensure that Marian Catholic would never have to close and are determined that endowment would be our best contribution to that goal. Our focus is helping students from single parent families and we have met some wonderful young people through this sponsorship. We are grateful to have had a hand in their high school careers.” – Ed Savant

CELEBRATING SUCCESS Timothy W. Manning ’88 to FEMA the perspective of a state official and a first responder, which would help strengthen the coalitions between the many entities involved in preparing for disasters. The current public health emergency surrounding the swine flu (H1N1 virus) demonstrates beyond a shadow of a doubt that in times of crisis, we need officials who know what they are doing. We must be prepared at all levels of government, at all times, for the next disaster, because it will come.” “It was an unbelievable honor and yet a very humbling experience to be called upon by the President to serve,” Manning said via phone interview. “FEMA has a very strong leadership team, one that is very involved, with extremely competent and dedicated people. I am thrilled to be a part of the team.” Manning’s primary responsibilities are preparedness issues which include meetings with governors and mayors throughout the nation. “This is a big country with potential for multiple disasters. Having been a state director helps me to be able to form well-trained response teams throughout the U.S.,” Manning said. Manning’s wife, Sarah, and four year old daughter Katie made the move to D.C. from New Mexico in June. Katie is excited to have a swing set in her new back yard, and Tim is happy to have his family together again; he has been in D.C. since the confirmation.

The United States Senate on May 6, unanimously confirmed the nomination of Timothy W. Manning ’88 as Deputy Administrator, National Preparedness Directorate, for the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). “I am very pleased that the Senate has confirmed Tim Manning for this critical role that is so vital to FEMA and to our country,” said U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. “Tim brings an excellent portfolio and experience to the position, and I am pleased to have him join the DHS and FEMA leadership teams.” During the nomination hearing held on April 30, 2009, Chairman Joseph Lieberman thanked Manning for his years of public service and remarked on his extensive background in national preparedness. “With this experience,” Lieberman said, “Mr. Manning would bring

Ryan Keene ’06 U.S. Marine Corporal Ryan Keene ’06 has been honored with the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal after his heroic efforts of freeing a pilot from inside a burning helicopter. Keene is deployed on the USS Boxer in the Gulf of Aden near Somalia where pirate attacks have occurred. During counter-piracy operations, a helicopter on the ship caught fire while refueling. Keene was helping to extinguish the fire when he noticed the pilot still inside. He climbed in and freed the pilot, then led him to safety. The certificate from the Department of the Navy reads in part, “Corporal Keene’s initiative, professionalism and loyal dedication to duty reflect credit upon him and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.” Ryan Keene joined the Marines in early 2007 to pursue training in aircraft mechanics. “Although he was always a good student,” his mother Kathy explained, “he felt a higher calling to forego a traditional college setting and joined the Marines. He wants to learn and serve his country. I am incredibly proud of him.” She gets occasional short phone calls from Ryan when he is in port, but usually communicates with him via email. She hasn’t actually spoken with Ryan since learning of the incident. “He didn’t want me to worry,” she stated.

STEVE TORTORELLO ’05

Steve Tortorello ’05 is in the Los Angeles area as part of a two-year volunteer graduate program through Notre Dame called the Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE). Similar to Teach for America, ACE is for Catholic schools. Steve said, “I’ll spend two years working as a volunteer teacher at an under-served Catholic school. I’ll get a small stipend to live on while I’m out here, and live in a house with a bunch of other ND students who are in the same program. After the two years, I’ll receive a Masters in education from Notre Dame.” ACE teachers spend two summers (June-July) studying in the Master of Education program at Notre Dame and two school years (August-May) teaching in under-resourced Catholic schools across the country. While teaching, participants live in small communities of 4 to 7 members, and together share the many challenges and rewards of beginning teaching. Tortorello adds, “I’m teaching 6th/7th/8th grade English and Science at a small parochial school in East Los Angeles. I’m also keeping busy taking comedy classes while I’m out here and trying to see all of the sights that I can.” To learn more about the ACE program at Notre Dame, visit www.ace.nd.edu/about. Editor’s Note: Mike Mesterharm ’05 has just begun the ACE program at Notre Dame, going through orientation and his practicum (similar to student teaching) this summer. He has been assigned to St. Jude’s Educational Institute in Montgomery, Alabama, where he will teach English, Economics and Government next school year. Watch future issues of Marian Matters for updates on our young alums who are giving back before going on.

Judge Thomas Stanfa ’73 The Kane County Bar Association recently highlighted 16th Judicial Circuit Associate Judge Thomas Stanfa ’73 in their publication, Bar Briefs. The following is excerpted from the article written by P.J. Gubbins. Never lost in a crowd is Judge Thomas J. Stanfa. That’s because he started life in a crowd. Born into a large Italian Catholic family, Stanfa currently has thirty-nine nieces and nephews. As the youngest of ten children, this Chicago Heights native learned many of life’s lessons from the two people he admired most -

Stanfa was fourteen when his father died. During high school at Marian Catholic, he worked detailing cars at a Buick dealership. “This was to pitch in, not to buy a car,” he remembers. “At this age, you can either rebel and go crazy or become responsible,” he explains. While at Marian Catholic, Stanfa was a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish National Honor Society and Student Council. He graduated magna cum laude from Loyola University Chicago in 1977 with a degree in political science and graduated from Loyola School of Law in 1980. His first legal job was in the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office in the Juvenile Division, under Richard Daley. His current judicial duties are divided between Kendall and Kane counties. “I really enjoy this job. Being a judge has always been a professional goal of mine. I believe it is the pinnacle of an attorney’s career,” Stanfa states. “The duties of a judge can be difficult and challenging. When I put on my judicial robe, I don’t just represent myself. I represent the whole judiciary. I am a small cog in a large judicial system,” Stanfa commented. Judge Stanfa is also bi-lingual. He speaks Spanish and performs marriages in Spanish for those who don’t speak English. Judge Stanfa and his wife Anne Casey, also an attorney, live in Geneva and have five children (four girls and one boy). Over the years he has coached his children’s teams in basketball, baseball and soccer. He enjoys woodworking and doing projects around the house. Judge Stanfa’s philosophy is to be nice to people, stating, “It doesn’t take much effort to say a kind word to someone.”

his parents. His father, Nick, born in Philadelphia, moved to Sicily at age six, where he worked until he was thirteen and then returned to the US. He taught himself to read. Mr. Stanfa was forty-nine years old when Tom, his youngest son, was born. Stanfa’s Sicilian mother, Jenny, the oldest girl in a family of eight children, completed her formal education in sixth grade. “Mom liked to read, emphasized education, but never pushed us to get A’s,” recounts Stanfa. “She wanted all of us to have the opportunity to attend college.”

’09 REUNION PLANNERS! On June 1, twenty-five alumni representing six class reunion committees gathered in the Sr. M. Paul McCaughey O.P. Leadership Center to begin planning their reunion which will be held at Marian on Oct. 3. For the past two years, the Leadership Center has been the site for formal class reunions. The energy and excitement shared by classmates in the classy new venue was undeniable. Several alums from last year’s reunion were first reluctant to come and mix with other class years but their concern was unfounded upon seeing the elegant setting, fabulous food and an electric atmosphere that reconnected them with friends. After last year’s Class Reunion, Rita Starkey ’68 said, “Overwhelmingly, the feeling was that it was the best reunion we have had in our 40 (wow!) years…The Leadership Center was a very good setting for the affair. In the evening it sure is comfortable and elegant…Overall, my reaction for the weekend is that it made me PROUD to be part of the Marian Catholic High School family. You sure know how to plan a party!”

For Marian Catholic Athletics, Eight is Great! In an era when the competitive arena of the South Suburbs provides plenty of athletic hurdles for Marian athletes, the Spartans made their most recent mark in the hurdles when junior Erick Gavin captured the school’s eighth individual state championship on May 30 in the IHSA Class 3A 110-meter hurdles. For a history that spans nearly 50 years of competition, seven of Marian’s total nine IHSA state championships have come since 2003. Gavin timed 14.04 to equal the Spartan school record and won the state championship at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Stadium. “Erick has been a very hard worker in the last three years, taking on summer track and extra workouts twice a day to get to this level,” praised Marian track and field coach LaVon Burks. “He has progressed with little steps the past two years and the big steps this year. “He is very dedicated to the sport of track and field, never missing practice and always helping the underclassmen with hurdle work in his off days. He still has a lot left in the tank and the goal is 13.7 at state next year. It can be done.” State qualifiers to join Gavin in track and field included senior triple jumper Stephen Fulton and junior Amber Simonton (200-meter dash). Meanwhile, the Marian men’s lacrosse squad turned in a brilliant postseason run to capture second in state in the Illinois High School Lacrosse Association B Division Lacrosse Cup. The Spartans (15-5) prevailed in backto-back overtime contests before eventually falling to St. Ignatius, 7-3, at Toyota Park in Bridgeview. “The work ethic and commitment were evident from day one and under the senior leadership of Brian Golubski, Mitch Clark, Zach Klupchak and Nate Coburn, our captains, we began to shape into a force to be reckoned with,” Spartan coach Mike McCormick praised. “Although we didn’t fare well in the final, that can’t tarnish this wonderful season. I have never been around a harder-working, never-say-die group of young men. The only thing better than their work ethic is how great they are as people. I have coached for a while, and I’ve never been around a better group of young men.” Marian opened the postseason with a victory over rival HomewoodFlossmoor, then reached the finals with overtime wins over Deerfield and Naperville Central, the former coming after a five-goal deficit. “I have been told by many who saw both games that these were the most exciting sporting events they have ever seen,” said McCormick, who anticipates lacrosse will be an IHSA sport by 2011. “I don’t know about that, but they were certainly special for us.” The women’s lacrosse team (12-5) also spent some time in the Illinois rankings. The men’s tennis squad completed its most winning campaign in school history with a 24-2 dual meet record to go with the East Suburban Catholic Conference regular-season title. The Spartans qualified all four entries for the IHSA state tournament. Freshman Julian Childers posted three state tourney wins to lead Marian to six points at state. He was joined at the state tourney by senior singles teammate Matt Goedke and the doubles teams of Brandon Tilton (Sr.)Mitch Zavesky (Fr.) and Carlos Alcantar (Sr.)-D.J. Rogala (Jr.). The softball squad compiled its 10th consecutive 20-win campaign with a final 24-7-1 mark, as junior Natalie Ward set the single-season school record for home runs with 11.

COLLEGE TRACK

Melissa Gergel ’07 qualifies for the NCAA Track & Field Championships…

…and reacts on the way down after vaulting a personal best

Even after they leave Chicago Heights, Marian Catholic athletes are still reaching new (and nationally impressive) heights. Former Spartan teammates Casey Taylor ’05 and Melissa Gergel ’07 had a recent reunion in Fayetteville, Ark. as both qualified for the NCAA Track and Field Championships on June 10-13. A senior at the University of Michigan, Taylor turned in a triple jump effort of 42-6 in the Mideast Regional to earn a bid to Fayetteville. She won the triple jump Big 10 title in 2008 and was part of the Big 10 champion 400-meter relay team this spring. Taylor, a three-time NCAA regional qualifier, owns the Michigan all-time record in the triple jump with an effort of 43-0¼. At Marian, Taylor is the lone Spartan athlete to win multiple IHSA

Casey Taylor ’05 reached the NCAA Finals for the third time

state titles (triple jump 2003, 2004, 2005) and was also a starter for the women’s basketball squad that captured fourth place in the IHSA Class AA state tournament in 2003-04. Gergel, a sophomore at the University of Oregon, followed up her Pac-10 title in the pole vault by winning the West Regional in the event with an effort of 14-1¾. She was an All-American for both indoor and outdoor as a freshman. The former Spartan was part of the only male-female tandem Mitchell Erickson ’08 to ever win the IHSA pole vault state titles from the same school in 2007. Erickson is recovering from an Achilles heal surgery and will compete in the pole vault next year at Purdue University.

SPARTAN TRADITION CONTINUES TO THE NEXT GENERATION It is not uncommon for a close bond to form among Marian Catholic High School students over the years and, as alumni, for people to remain connected and continue as life-long friends. For 1980 graduates, Edward Ziltz, James Dee, Bob Klupchak, Lou Longo and Joe Christofanelli, that tradition has been passed down to a new generation as their daughters from the class of 2011 at Marian, created their own friendship. Katie Ziltz, Shannon Dee, Kelly Klupchak, Emily Longo and Leah Christofanelli all admit that they were thrown together through the years because of their fathers’ friendship, but once they arrived at Marian, a special relationship of their own developed. “We all knew each other before,” said Shannon Dee, “but we really became friends when we got to Marian.” Marian itself was always a big influence on each of the girls’ lives, they said, because it was such a large part of their fathers’ lives. “We were always going to sporting events here,” said Emily Longo, “and I remember I wanted to go here because my dad always talked about it.” The five 1980 alumni have known each other from their grade school days where each played different sports in their respective Catholic elementary schools. However, once they arrived at Marian, the five became friends as they played football under Coach Dave Mattio ’66. After they graduated, the alumni embarked on different paths, but one constant remained. “Marian became the thread that kept us together,” said Joe Christofanelli. “And having all the alumni events over the years really drew us back to the school and to each other.” All continue to support the football program. Ed Ziltz and James Dee, along with fellow alum Tim Swanson ’86, are founding committee members of the annual Tail Power Classic golf outing, now celebrating its 8th year. This year’s event will be held September 19, 2009 at Lincoln Oaks Golf Course in Crete. All proceeds benefit the football program.

The 1980 grad dads are l-r: Joe Christofanelli, Ed Ziltz, Bob Klupchak, James Dee and Lou Longo. Their 2011 daughters are sitting l-r: Katie Ziltz, Shannon Dee, and Kelly Klupchak. On the rock are Leah Christofanelli and Emily Longo.

While sports were, and continue to be an integral part of their fathers’ lives at Marian, the girls have picked up the ball as well. Katie and Kelly play lacrosse, while Shannon, Emily and Leah are on the softball team. All the alumni dads said they are glad to send their children to Marian Catholic. Some have older and younger children who attend as well. “You don’t realize the true experience you are receiving when you are here (at Marian),” said Bob Klupchak. “But once you are out in the world, you have a different perspective. And then you see what (your kids) are learning here, and you know that they are going to be able to integrate that into their lives, too.” 11

• Connor Loesch • February 3, 1939 - June 10, 2009 The Marian Catholic family has lost one of its treasured members with the passing of alumni parent Connor Loesch, beloved husband of long-time math teacher, Anne Loesch. In addition to sending all seven children to Marian (Martin ’83, Maria ’84, Carl ’86, Katie ’88, Matthew ’91, Anne ’93, and John ’97) Connor Loesch served the Marian community as founding member and two year Chair of the Advisory Board from 1981 to 1987. In the 90’s, he was the Chair of the Long-Range Planning efforts which shaped the direction of the school and the priorities of Marian’s first–ever capital campaign, Partnership 2000. A family man, with great intellectual curiosity, grounded deeply in his Catholic faith, Connor enjoyed and supported his children’s efforts in sports, band, clubs and academics. The first to realize and suggest

May these souls and all the souls of the faithfully departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

the recognition of the significant number of priests and religious who are Marian alumni, Connor spearheaded the idea to promote this special blessing within the community and, with Anne, remained a benefactor to campus ministry programs promoting religious vocations. In 2007, Anne and Connor Loesch were honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Hall of Fame celebration. “Dad was part of our moral compass. He helped us get our bearings. He was a reference point. He reminded us to look to the faith we share, the lessons we have been taught, the stirrings in our hearts – and to think. To use good judgment and common sense. Dad was kind, generous, thoughtful, courteous and humble. Dad led by example, never hid his humanity and worked too hard. He knew that one of the keys to living a good life was having and keeping good friends.” – Martin Loesch ’83
