Marian Catholic High School is fortunate to have a base of alumni who, when called upon, are generous with their time, talents and treasure. By the numbers, we have 15,413 living alumni, 13,932 good addresses and 7,810 national, active contact records. Recently, the Advancement Office sponsored Alumni Focus Groups to review our current efforts and to rejuvenate the Marian Catholic Alumni Association. Through the years, the organization has lost some of its relevancy among our constituents. A concerted effort is now underway to jump-start and revitalize the organization.

Over the course of three evenings, more than 50 alums participated in the Alumni Focus Groups to help strengthen and broaden our Alumni Relations efforts. While the meetings were held at Marian, their reach was national as alums across the country also participated via teleconferencing. Topics covered included Off-Site Networking, Alumni Association, Hall of Fame Recognition Dinner, Fund Development and Publications. Two meetings were held to discuss these areas. A core group then met to go over each group’s top priorities to determine the main objectives as we move forward. A final report will be published in June with a copy in the fall issue of Marian Matters. A preview of the findings had a central theme; alumni want more opportunities to become engaged. To expand on this, the group believed a stronger, more vibrant, working Marian Catholic Alumni Association is key. In addition, utilizing technology and social media is a top priority as well as inviting representative assistance from each class year and affinity groups.

MARIAN CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL BOARD OF DIRECTORS The transition from an Advisory Board to a Board of Directors at Marian Catholic High School continues to move smoothly through the two-year pilot program that began in September of 2009 and will be completed in June of 2011. Committee chairs have been working in close communication with employees of the school who are directors of major departments. During this most recent quarter of the school year, the Finance Committee and the Facilities Committee worked with school personnel to address significant building repairs and improvements that are being prioritized within the framework of a balanced budget. All committees continue to hold as their privilege and their obligation the ongoing mission of maintaining Marian Catholic High School as a strong college preparatory school steeped in the Dominican tradition and the Catholic faith. -Sister Judine Hilding, O.P., President

EMAIL REUNION SPARKS FORT MYERS ALUMNI & FRIENDS GATHERING Generally speaking, in most issues of Marian Matters, you would find an Alumni Profile, chronicling the journey of one of the 15,000 plus graduates of Marian Catholic High School. Profiles have included stories about professional successes, philanthropic and service missions, and stories of faith overcoming adversity. This time, though, not so much an alumni profile, but more an invitation. Patricia (Macready) Wiggenhorn ’63 and Patricia (Pignotti) Knepler ’63 have reconnected as a result of the grassroots “email reunion” outreach undertaken by the class of ’63 prior to the Founding Four reunion in September 2008. Dozens of updates and reconnections continue to occur as a result of this effort. Knepler participated in the email reunion and that’s how Wiggenhorn learned of their common ground in Fort Myers, Florida. Both “Pats” were active high school students, with Wiggenhorn as editor of the Megaphone and assistant editor of the Mariner along with performing in theater productions, and Knepler brilliant in math classes and entirely selfless in her service to others in Student Council, National Honor Society, and Sodality. After graduation, each embarked on their adult paths, both eventually marrying dynamic, corporate-types, resulting in multiple moves across the country, building high-powered careers themselves – and raising sons (two for Knepler; one for Wiggenhorn). Wiggenhorn, a former Motorola communications executive, is now an executive coach and co-owner, with her husband, Bill, of Main Captiva, LLC, which designs customized corporate leadership development programs globally. Knepler has retired from years as a college mathematics instructor, and is now extremely active in her parish and her community. The “Pats” re-met in January of 2010, and have since discovered a lifetime of coincidences that have renewed and solidified their relationship after all these years. With both now calling Fort Myers, Florida home (Wiggenhorn six months of the year; Knepler full-time), the friends would like to extend an invitation to all in the area for a 2011 Marian Catholic gathering. “We’d love to host everyone affiliated with Marian Catholic,” Wiggenhorn stated. “We all have a common bond, so whether younger or older, or even a Marian parent, all are included.” If you live or vacation in or near the 239 Area Code in Florida, and would like to be updated as plans develop for a 2011 Alumni and Friends Gathering on Florida’s west coast, please contact Mary Moffatt, Vice President of Advancement (708) 756-9767 or mmoffatt@marianchs.com. Moffatt, who facilitated the regional gatherings in California, Arizona, Ohio and New York noted, “The national alumni and friends base is growing, and when we reach out to an area, the resident alums are always receptive and gracious. Fort Myers promises to be a great time!” 2

MARIAN CATHOLIC LEADERSHIP PROGRAM The overwhelming success of the soon-to-be copyrighted Marian Catholic Leadership Program has produced a second graduating class who has completed the four-year sequential, faith-based program. Through the combined efforts of the external Leadership Council, Faculty Leadership Team, faculty facilitators, and student leaders, the Leadership Program has seen tremendous growth in positive objectives and outcomes. “Some great leaders have been borne from the program,” said Bobby Lambert, Director of the Leadership Program, at a meeting of the Leadership Council earlier this year. “This is especially true in classroom settings where lessons are taught by peers,” Patrick Healy ’10 (Indiana University) and Melissa Zambrano ’10 (North Central College) he said. receive the 2010 HIRE Award from John Kozojed, Assistant Principal, at Honors Night in May. Evidenced by the naming of two HIRE Award recipients this year, the Marian Catholic Leadership Program is not only building on success, but also significance as ethical leaders make their way into the world. HIRE is an acronym for the building blocks of the Leadership Program: Honesty, Integrity, Responsibility and Enthusiasm. As a student progresses through the program, the acronym evolves into Help, Inspire, React and Engage. Olivia Jackson ’09 was named as the first HIRE Award recipient last year, followed by Melissa Zambrano and Patrick Healy from the Class of 2010, who emerged as exemplary student leaders.

THE ST. KATHARINE DREXEL RACIAL JUSTICE AWARD that consists of board members, administrators, teachers, staff, parents and other stakeholders, who are dedicated to dismantling racism within the school community,” said Dr. Shirley Morris, Assistant Principal of Academics at Marian. Reginald Summerrise, current parent and member of Marian’s Anti-Racism Committee, echoes similar feelings. “By far, Sister Kathleen Anne is one of the most forwardthinking leaders when it comes to diversity,” he said. “She also has a special gift in her ability to forge relationships among groups of people.”

Marian Catholic High School Principal, Sister Kathleen Anne Tait, O.P. was named by the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Office for Racial Justice to receive the St. Katharine Drexel Racial Justice Award. His Eminence Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. presided over the ceremony. The St. Katharine Drexel Racial Justice Award is named in honor of the American founder of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, who devoted her entire life to holiness and work among Native and African American peoples. Sister Kathleen Anne Tait is a founding member of the Springfield Dominican and Archdiocese of Chicago’s anti-racism teams. Her commitment to the principles of anti-racism as an institutional issue that must be pro-actively and effectively addressed, has led to the establishment of the first institutional anti-racism team in the archdiocesan school system, and the Springfield Dominican network of schools. Marian Catholic President, Sister Judine Hilbing, O.P. is delighted that Sister Kathleen Anne has been selected for this award. “Sister Kathleen Anne has been very faithful in her efforts to work toward a school environment at Marian Catholic that is anti-racist both in policy and in practice,” she said. Others from Marian’s Anti-Racism Team agree. “Sister Kathleen Anne has been instrumental in creating a strategic plan designed to foster a positive climate for Marian Catholic High School’s diverse student body. Her advocacy includes organizing an Anti-Racism Committee 3

At the end of the eventful day, many of the Career Day presenters came together for a group photo.

CAREER DAY

Freshman and sophomore students were treated to the expertise of 67 alums and friends of Marian Catholic who came to the school on Monday, May 3 for Career Day. Students chose three careers of interest and were able to hear from professionals what is necessary to be successful in those professions.

2010 With props demonstrating her eclectic style, Bon Appétit owner Vida Talandis ’69 showed the students in Culinary Arts how to make a statement both with food and setting.

Prior to Career Day, alumni and friends were treated to a lunch sponsored by the Marian Alumni Association. Chris Silkaitis ’94 in Medical Technology and Therese “Teri” Heywood ’84 in nursing enjoyed the camaraderie.

2010 MOTHERS CLUB FASHION SHOW “ROCK THE RED CARPET” A BIG HIT! Music, dancing and fashion are mainstays in the Mothers Club Fashion Show and, again this year, senior models put on a great performance. Emceed by Nche Onyema ’02, fashions from area shops and boutiques were modeled by over 100 students, faculty, and parents. Proceeds from the annual Mothers Club Fashion Show directly benefit students and faculty at Marian Catholic High School. Funds from previous shows have purchased dozens of laptop computers for use in study hall, and multiple LCD projectors for classrooms.

Hundreds of gently used prom dresses were on sale at the Red Carpet Boutique.

The Fourth Annual Metro Alumni and Friends Networking Event took place Thursday, June 3 at Rivers, in the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. With the Chicago River as their backdrop, more than 50 alums used the opportunity to network among new and old friends.

If these familiar words bring a smile to your face, reminding you of those carefree, fall days of the Marian Catholic Calendar Drive, then perhaps you might like to pre-order the 2011 Marian Catholic High School calendar. Already in production, the 2011 calendar will be jam-packed with opportunities to win daily drawings and loaded with over $400 in valuable coupons. Current MCHS students sell a quota of six calendars, which remain at the 1985 price of $25 each. If you don’t have a Marian kid on your block or in your family, just call “Captain Perk” John Perkovich (708) 755-7565 ext. 1446, and he’ll partner you with a student seller.

Nche Onyema ’02 not only emceed the Fashion Show, but also choreographed many of the runway numbers.

On the two Saturdays following the Fashion Show, the Mothers Club held its first “Red Carpet Boutique” where hundreds of gently used prom dresses were offered at steep discounts to young women from Marian Catholic and surrounding high schools. Mothers Club Chair Kathy Zagotta (mother of Nicko ’02, Peter ’06, and Mary Kate ’10) is pleased with the results. “The idea of selling gently used prom dresses has been around for a number of years,” she stated. With families struggling in this economy, it seemed like the perfect time to give it a try. The committee did a fantastic job organizing the sale, and we hope to do it again next year.”

It was wonderful to see so many alums from different classes brought together to exchange stories, contacts and experiences. It’s encouraging for Marian Catholic to be the unifying force between young and old.

ATHLETICS·SPEECH·WINTER GUARD

Erick Gavin ’10 repeats as the IHSA Men’s 110 meter High Hurdles State Champion.

Julian Childers ’12 placed 9th in IHSA State Tennis Singles competition.

Erick Gavin joined some elite company on May 29 when his effort of 13.90 earned him a second straight IHSA state championship in the 110-meter hurdles in the State Track and Field meet at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. The winning mark also set a school record in the event for Gavin, who will continue his career at the University of Michigan. Ironically, the only other Marian Spartan to win multiple state titles also became a Wolverine. Casey Taylor ’05 won the IHSA women’s triple jump state championship in 2003, 2004 and 2005.

Sophomore Julian Childers led the way with five victories at the state tournament for a 9th place individual finish in singles, as he followed up East Suburban Catholic Conference and IHSA Sectional titles. Senior D.J. Rogala teamed with sophomore Mitch Zavesky for a 3-2 doubles record at the state tournament.

Overall, Marian Catholic has captured ten individual IHSA state titles in athletics.

Youth was served in women’ track and field, where a pair of Spartan underclassmen qualified for the IHSA State meet. Freshman Imani Haynes earned 12th place in the state in the 110-meter high hurdles, while sophomore Paige Crawford was 27th in the state in the 400-meter dash. Marian also captured third place in the ESCC meet, with a pair of relays setting conference meet records.

With several key members returning, Marian will try to build on the most successful two-year dual meet record in school history (45-5).

Men’s tennis continues to climb the ladder toward the state’s elite, as the Spartans posted their highest state tournament finish since 1980 with 12 points and an 18th place state finish this year.

MARIAN CATHOLIC GROUP INTERPRETATION EARNS STATE TITLE

State Champion Group Interpretation members are Jaboukie Young-White, Adam King, Conor Keane, Kyle Fitzgerald, seated. Standing is Mary Lou Herbias, Mollyanne Nunn, Kiayla Jackson, Jaime Patriarca, and Jonathan Williamsen.

The nine-member team from Marian Catholic captured the State Title in Group Interpretation at the IHSA Forensics contest held in March. “Protestants Cry, Too” by Robert Cormier, is a lively and moving story about a 1940’s era Catholic family in which the oldest son, Michael, falls in love with Jessica, a Protestant. Imbued with religious stereotypes, “Protestants Cry, Too” also portrays a family’s change of heart once their stern and ultra-religious father softens his view. Marian Forensics Director Mark Donaway is proud of the team’s accomplishments. “With a multi-cultural cast, the students embraced the story to perfection,” he stated. 6

“Welcome to YOUR Alumni Association” is at the center of a new effort to engage more alumni affiliation to MCHS through the Alumni Association. Although everyone who graduated from Marian Catholic is automatically a member of the organization, now is the time to connect our alumni with the association. The Alumni Association will become a centerpiece of our Alumni Relations program. It will concentrate on social functions for alumni as well as offering an established network and opportunities to connect with the school both locally and from a distance.

Marian Catholic’s Winter Guard placed 5th in Scholastic World Class at the Winter Guard International competition held in Dayton, OH. Having won 1st place in the Scholastic Open Class in 2009, the Marian Guard was promoted to World Class this year with the hopes of making it into the finals of 15 teams from among 25 teams competing. By capturing 5th place overall, the Marian Guard made history as they placed higher in their first year than any other newly promoted team. The guard’s show is titled “Ashes to Ashes.” Guard members, dressed for a funeral, deal with overwhelming grief felt at the loss of a loved one with “Ashes to Ashes.” As a gravedigger fills a freshly dug grave with shovelfuls of dirt from a wheelbarrow, a sobbing widow holding a black umbrella is escorted through the scene as she tries to manage her sadness. When she collapses at the graveside, unable to bear her loss, a close friend picks her up and consoles her, holding her as they slowly exit the floor. The performance has an undeniably somber theme, but the capacity crowd in Dayton was moved by their portrayal, responding with a standing ovation. Fieldandfloor.com ranked Marian Catholic among the top four in their review of all the performances in Dayton, high school teams and independent teams included, saying, “This was the kind of color guard production and masterful performance that reshapes perceptions and futures.”

Promotion of the MCHS Alumni Association will kickoff at the Homecoming Alumni Gathering on Friday, Sept. 24 in the Sr. M. Paul McCaughey, O.P. Leadership Center after the homecoming game against Notre Dame. With more time and planning, a general meeting of the Marian Catholic Alumni Association will be held in October 2010. Serviced by the Alumni Relations office, the group will be “powered” by Alumni Representatives who will serve as a bridge between Marian Catholic and alumni. Graduating classes, and affinity groups (band, athletics, fine arts, etc.) will be another “go to” resource among the class or group, serving as the communication link between the school, the Alumni Association, and promoting the mission among a vibrant community. The Association invites national as well as local members to become part of the network of representatives. While telecommuting will greatly reduce the physical meeting time constraints felt by many, this position does carry expectations that require active commitment. If you would like to get in on the ground floor as together we jump-start this exciting venture, contact Carol Burke Swanson ’81, Director of Alumni Relations, at cswanson@marianchs.com or (708) 756-9775.

GRADUATION 2010 Continued from pg.1 Senior Class President, Meaghan Waldron (Purdue) encapsulated four years of high school from a different perspective. “This year began with one of the greatest experiences of my senior year: Kairos 135. Kairos helped me bond with long-time friends, make new friends, and strengthen my relationship with God. It was through God’s help we got through the last four years. We’ve celebrated countless Masses together, and we shared in the Eucharist as ministers of the body and blood of Christ.”

Class Valedictorian, Jennifer Szotek (Notre Dame) addressed the capacity crowd saying, “I would like to thank all of the faculty and staff, especially the teachers, who have guided us throughout our journey at Marian Catholic. When we fell short of your expectations, you encouraged us and helped us get to where we needed to be. You gave us the confidence, hard working nature, and strong faith in God that will carry us through our next phase of life. Down the road, we may forget a complicated math or science equation or the meaning of a novel but, because of you, we will always remember what it means to be a scholar with a soul.”

Just before the end of the ceremony, Sister Judine addressed the Class of 2010 for the last time. “No matter where life takes you,” Sister said, “Marian Catholic High School will always be a part of who you are. The diploma you take with you tonight honors you as one who was educated and spiritually nourished in the rich tradition of Dominican truth. May you always remember that prayer, study, community, and service create a firm foundation upon which all your future dreams can be built.”

MARIAN CATHOLIC ALUMNI ASSOCIATION WELCOMES CLASS OF

2010 The Class of 2010 was welcomed into the Marian Catholic Alumni Association during an all-school Mass at the end of the year. Dominican Preachers, Gina Ceragioli ’10, Colleen Daw ’10, and Melissa Zambrano ’10, teamed up to share a message of change, growth, and future expectations. Afterwards, each member of the senior class received a Marian Catholic Alumni pin, distributed by alumni faculty members.

Pictured is Andy DeLaurentis ’95 giving an Alumni pin to Jackie Nauracy ’10, while Erin (Falucskai) Russell ’02 distributes Alumni pins to other seniors.

Spartans on the Mall... MCHS Alumni and Friends are increasingly following with interest, and apparently anticipation, “Spartans on the March.” In recent years, we have taken our Chicago Heights show on the road to points in California, Arizona, Ohio, and New York. Come September 9th we will be responding to a grass roots invite to visit D.C. that includes alumni and friends from the metro area and surrounding states. Just as with other regional gatherings, we are fortunate to have several alumni hosts who have extended the invitation to get together, especially Joe Urschel ’70, Executive Director of the Newseum. Other D.C. area hosts include Anthony D. Cak ’98, Mary Jane Doerr ’70, Dawn Farrell ’97, Bryan Klopack ’02, Chris McDonnell ’01, Dan and Julianne (Finlayson) Mulhollan ’62 ’62, and Tony Zagotta ’84.

2010 ENDOWMENT GOLF CLASSIC AUGUST 16 Flossmoor Country Club and Idlewild Country Club will be hosts of the 21st Annual Endowment Golf Classic on Monday, August 16, 2010. Thanks to the efforts of Golf Committees past and present, the Endowment Fund surpassed the $1 million mark a few years ago, and the interest earned continues to fund scholarships for current students. Twenty Marian Catholic students received scholarships for the 2009-2010 school year, and with another successful Endowment Classic, that number will surely grow. Plenty of foursomes and sponsorship opportunities are still available. Visit the website for more information or to register online. 9

Ron Centanni Long-time MCHS Guidance Counselor, Ron Centanni, has retired after 29 years of service to countless Marian Catholic students, including some entire families of siblings. Perhaps best known for his eclectic collection of “stuff ” in his office, and being one of the biggest Cubs fans on campus, Mr. Centanni has exciting plans for his retirement.

“I’m going to add a lot of stamps to my passport,” he said. “It will be interesting to travel during other seasons than just summer. Asia and South America are toward the top of the list, but I’ll still find time to volunteer for Tinley Park village activities, and I might just take it easy for a change.”

The Dominican Sisters of Springfield, the Alumni Association, and the entire Marian Catholic community sadly acknowledge the passing of the following members of our family: The Marian Catholic High School Community grieves the loss of Paige Kuersten ’12, who died as a result of a recent automobile accident. Our deepest sympathy and prayerful support go out to the family of Paige and to all those who love her. Edward Krumb ’65 passed away May 31, 2010 in Prosser, Washington. Active in the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and serving at both the district and state levels, Krumb was named Mr. Eagle for 2006-2007. He lived by the Eagles’ motto, “People Helping People.” Harriet M. Kampe, mother of Dr. Carolyn J. Kampe ’62, and Joan (Kampe) Figg ’64 and grandmother of Samuel Figg ’86 and Frederic Figg ’87, passed away in March. Many may remember Mrs. Kampe from the very earliest days of Marian Catholic when she worked in the bookstore. Carolyn remarked that her mother was always very proud of being a part of the Marian community and enjoyed her experiences here. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
