The new President, Chris Ormsby ’93 is an executive coach and learning consultant who has worked with senior executives from around the world. Chris was a member of our MCHS Focus Groups and has been a strong supporter and participant in many events at Marian. Susan Van Etten ’80, our new Vice President works at Murphy Marble Company in Chicago as a Project Manager and is the mother of recent graduate Katie Ziltz ’11 and soon to be senior Jack Ziltz ’12. Susan is an active member of Marian’s Mothers Club, and for the second year is a committee member for the MCHS Endowment Golf Classic, and has always been a strong supporter and participant of Alumni functions.

The Fifth Annual Metro Gathering of Marian Catholic’s Alumni and Friends hosted more than 85 guests in the Crystal Room of the Union League Club of Chicago on Thursday, June 9. A Chicago landmark and ideally located, this architectural attraction was a draw to many of our alumni, parents and friends working and living in downtown Chicago. As with our previous Metro Gatherings, guests represented every decade of the Marian Catholic community, enjoying both the social and networking opportunities this gathering offers. “It really was a great combination of meeting up with new and old friends in a business atmosphere where you can combine a little bit of business and friendship at the same time,” said John Benish ’84. “It was great. I did a little bit of both. It wasn’t too long and it wasn’t too short. It was perfect.” The historic venue attracted others who had never attended a Metro Gathering. “I met some new faces and ran into people that I did go to school with,” said Bridget McLaughlin ’95. “This was the first time I attended a Metro Gathering. I brought a friend with me and we caught up with some people but I saw the potential for networking and for using it as a means for building my own network, so I will definitely will be interested in future events. I had a lot of fun.” Responding to suggestions of our Alumni Focus Groups, the informal program was expanded this year to include a brief presentation about energizing a professional network and building social capital. An experienced speaker, Chris Ormsby ’93, vice president, Global Learning Organization—Bank of America delivered an engaging reminder of the value of forging long-term business relationships, including involvement in the MCHS Alumni Association. Mary Moffatt, Vice President, Advancement, invited the guests to “find your place” within the Alumni Association and the greater Marian Catholic community assuring a welcoming place for everyone.

Alumni Association Leaders are Susan Van Etten ’80, Vice President; Christopher Ormsby ’93, President; and James M. Murphy ’05, Communications Coordinator.

Caring for God’s RESOURCES “Marian Catholic High School believes organizations, like individuals, must assume responsibility as tenants of Earth. The goal is to create an environment that protects God’s resources and perpetuates a sustainable ecological cycle. Marian Catholic’s goal as a learning institution is to challenge students to become profoundly involved in developing and sustaining continuous ecological lifestyles while fostering that growth through personal actions and choices.” - Adopted by the Marian Catholic Board of Directors at their April 2011 meeting, the Caring for God’s Resources plan is a campus-wide initiative with two main goals. Goal 1. Reduce Marian Catholic’s Carbon Footprint In collaboration with Legacy Environmental Services of Indiana, Marian Catholic has identified specific ways to reduce its carbon footprint, primarily through concentrated efforts to reduce fuel consumption, implementing fleet modernization over time, and reducing overall vehicle use by 5-10%. By pledging to use cleaner fuel options where possible, and instituting a “no idling” policy on campus, emissions reductions will be met.
