Metro Alumni and Friends at Union League 2011-13 Alumni Association Leaders Commissioned The newly appointed leadership of the Alumni Association was introduced. The new President, Chris Ormsby ’93 is an executive coach and learning consultant who has worked with senior executives from around the world. Chris was a member of our MCHS Focus Groups and has been a strong supporter and participant in many events at Marian. Susan Van Etten ’80, our new Vice President works at Murphy Marble Company in Chicago as a Project Manager and is the mother of recent graduate Katie Ziltz ’11 and soon to be senior Jack Ziltz ’12. Susan is an active member of Marian’s Mothers Club, and for the second year is a committee member for the MCHS Endowment Golf Classic, and has always been a strong supporter and participant of Alumni functions.

The Fifth Annual Metro Gathering of Marian Catholic’s Alumni and Friends hosted more than 85 guests in the Crystal Room of the Union League Club of Chicago on Thursday, June 9. A Chicago landmark and ideally located, this architectural attraction was a draw to many of our alumni, parents and friends working and living in downtown Chicago. As with our previous Metro Gatherings, guests represented every decade of the Marian Catholic community, enjoying both the social and networking opportunities this gathering offers. “It really was a great combination of meeting up with new and old friends in a business atmosphere where you can combine a little bit of business and friendship at the same time,” said John Benish ’84. “It was great. I did a little bit of both. It wasn’t too long and it wasn’t too short. It was perfect.” The historic venue attracted others who had never attended a Metro Gathering. “I met some new faces and ran into people that I did go to school with,” said Bridget McLaughlin ’95. “This was the first time I attended a Metro Gathering. I brought a friend with me and we caught up with some people but I saw the potential for networking and for using it as a means for building my own network, so I will definitely will be interested in future events. I had a lot of fun.” Responding to suggestions of our Alumni Focus Groups, the informal program was expanded this year to include a brief presentation about energizing a professional network and building social capital. An experienced speaker, Chris Ormsby ’93, vice president, Global Learning Organization—Bank of America delivered an engaging reminder of the value of forging long-term business relationships, including involvement in the MCHS Alumni Association. Mary Moffatt, Vice President, Advancement, invited the guests to “find your place” within the Alumni Association and the greater Marian Catholic community assuring a welcoming place for everyone.

Alumni Association Leaders are Susan Van Etten ’80, Vice President; Christopher Ormsby ’93, President; and James M. Murphy ’05, Communications Coordinator.

Caring for God’s RESOURCES “Marian Catholic High School believes organizations, like individuals, must assume responsibility as tenants of Earth. The goal is to create an environment that protects God’s resources and perpetuates a sustainable ecological cycle. Marian Catholic’s goal as a learning institution is to challenge students to become profoundly involved in developing and sustaining continuous ecological lifestyles while fostering that growth through personal actions and choices.” - Adopted by the Marian Catholic Board of Directors at their April 2011 meeting, the Caring for God’s Resources plan is a campus-wide initiative with two main goals. Goal 1. Reduce Marian Catholic’s Carbon Footprint In collaboration with Legacy Environmental Services of Indiana, Marian Catholic has identified specific ways to reduce its carbon footprint, primarily through concentrated efforts to reduce fuel consumption, implementing fleet modernization over time, and reducing overall vehicle use by 5-10%. By pledging to use cleaner fuel options where possible, and instituting a “no idling” policy on campus, emissions reductions will be met.

Enhanced Technology Media Center 2011 Marian Fund Priority “The enhanced Technology|Media Center will present greatly expanded opportunities which will reach far beyond the academic areas into extra-curricular venues.” -Joelyn Carlasare, Director of Technology Announced in the spring 2011 issue of Marian Matters, construction of the enhanced Technology|Media Center in third hall is in full swing this summer. After a year of faculty input from all disciplines, school administration, and a thorough search of similar programs in other schools, the decision was made for an updated technology plan to be merged with The Courage to Lead Capital Campaign commitment of a Broadcasting Center. Due diligence and hallmark stewardship of Marian Catholic administrators made a compelling case to centralize broadcasting space within an enhanced Technology|Media Center. The plan for renovation and construction was approved by the Board of Directors at their April meeting. The cost will be supported as a priority of the 2011-2012 Marian Fund. Help to underwrite the broadcasting media portion of the project will come from The Courage to Lead Campaign gifts restricted to broadcasting. This will be yet another challenge met head-on by the Marian Catholic community, and will enhance the college preparatory excellence promised in the Dominican educational mission. By focusing on “demonstration of Christian values,” it is our active commitment to sustain programs through state-of-the-art facilities, giving our students the contemporary skills to meet world challenges as media savvy and technologically prepared “Scholars with a Soul.”

Caring for God’s RESOURCES

Continued from page 1 and cardboards/newspapers. Marian staff conserves paper use and prints on both sides of paper when possible. Separating recyclables may help reduce final disposal costs. The Zero Waste Project came to fruition through a grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, providing a multitude of recycling containers and educational materials. With an atmosphere of “Every item that can be recycled should be recycled” throughout the campus, Marian Catholic’s ultimate goal is to succeed in having zero waste. “The momentum is building,” said Will Chapleau ’73, Chair of the ad hoc Environmental Committee of the Board of Directors. “The students and staff have come a long way in their recycling efforts over the past few years, and with continued encouragement, we should have no trouble attaining our goals.”

To conserve gas and electricity, energy-efficient light fixtures and a tank-less hot water heater were installed, along with an energy producing solar panel placed at the north end of the football stadium. Energy-saving light fixtures were installed first in both gyms, and replacement fixtures are being phased in for classrooms and hallways. According to Harvey Mazur, Marian’s Facility Engineer, installing a tank-less hot water heater has significantly reduced energy consumption. “Now we can cycle hot water faster than ever using a fraction of the energy, and it takes up much less space in the boiler room,” he explained. A newly installed solar panel on a storage building roof at the north end of the football stadium now produces power, while monitoring software (loaded on the Marian website) tallies kilowatts generated. “The solar panel is not only an environmentally-friendly technology,” says Science teachers and Generation Green co-moderators Jen Clifford ’88 and Tona Haywood. “It provides real-time information and concrete instructional materials right here on the Marian campus.” Grant funding for Marian’s solar panel came from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation. Stepped up efforts at recycling paper, plastic, and aluminum cans have been implemented with help from Generation Green, the high profile student group dedicated to educating everyone on campus about recycling and energy conservation options. By raising awareness and encouraging volunteerism among students, staff, parents and alumni to effectively achieve, manage and measure conservation goals, Generation Green is committed to reducing Marian’s carbon footprint.

Leadership from Marian Catholic’s Generation Green, along with co-moderators and members of the Board of Directors ad hoc Environmental Committee, discuss the “Caring for God’s Resources” plan at a recent meeting. Seated is Don Murday, Carlee Wieser ’11, and Johnathon Brodeur ’12. Sr. Agnes Ann Pisel, O.P.,

taught Theology at Marian for 31 years at all levels, but most recently found an attachment to teaching the freshmen. She’s one of the key figures at Marian Catholic who knows the generations of families that have called MCHS home. Her love of Marian is evident in her dedication to the students and her caring ways. We will miss her gentle sense of humor and constant support of all that is Marian Catholic. Sister will enjoy a well-deserved year’s sabbatical and discern where God will lead her next. Fortunately, she will continue to keep her home residence at Marian through the fall semester.

Members of the 2011 Endowment Golf Classic Committee at their May meeting are seated, Kerry Beukema ’00, Sandy Sweeney, Greg Underwood, EGC Co-Chair, Eileen Gallagher Daw ’78, Tracey Anderson, and Byron Anderson ’79. Standing is Mike Murphy ’70, Joe Zagone ’74, Sue Sheehan Trump ’75, Robert Gromala ’97, Carol Burke Swanson ’81, and Jim Matese ’74. Those not pictured include Mark Peifer ’81, EGC Co-Chair, John Brennan ’97, Carlo Gozzi ’00, Patrick Hanifin ’03, Tony Makarek ’64, Mary Moffatt, Ryan Noth ’03, Tom Raczka ’00, Shannon Reidy ’90, Susan Van Etten ’80, and Marielle Zagone.

Sister Judine Hilbing, O.P., President, announced in August 2010 that the Endowment Golf Classic Fund of Marian Catholic High School has now reached over $2 million, thanks primarily to the efforts of Endowment Golf Classic committees, golfers, and sponsors over the past 21 years. While savvy investing and careful stewardship of the Fund remains steadfast, the overwhelming participation of golfers and sponsors has steadily contributed to the Fund’s growth. A record thirty-seven students received scholarships from the Endowment Fund for the 2010-2011 school year; students who might not otherwise have been able to continue their education at Marian Catholic. “I am dedicated to Marian Catholic and am honored to be awarded this scholarship. I hope one day I will be able to help students achieve their goals just as you have helped me,” remarked one recipient who begins her senior year this fall. To add even more excitement to an already great day of golf, the committee this year has added a $100,000 Hole-in-One shootout, which will see the winners of the men’s and women’s “closest to the pin” contests from both Idlewild and Flossmoor Country Clubs (4), and the golfers with the lowest net score from each course (2) qualify for a 165-yard shot. With a crowd gathered around the 18th hole at Flossmoor CC before dinner, including golfers and guests looking on from the patio and balcony, the six contestants will take their best shot at $100,000.

Bob Rodey came to Marian Catholic 18 years ago, after retiring from the

public school system. Along with his sidekick, faculty member Mike Raftery, Bob helped establish the American Studies program at Marian Catholic and also taught history. Bob is best known for his engaging class discussions on issues of American History. He has an uncanny ability to make history come alive and capture the imagination of students. In retirement, Bob will use his wealth of knowledge and experience to help write the new AP History tests.

Our new Communications Coordinator is James M. Murphy ’05 who is currently a staff accountant and client services manager at State Street Financial Group. James is a member of DePaul’s President Club and the Young Alumni Committee at DePaul, and is a member of the Marian Catholic Young Alum Phonathon Committee. “This year’s event at the Union League Club provided an opportunity for alumni to reconnect with the Marian community. Many different graduation years were represented by those in attendance. Being from the class of ’05, I was glad to see that there were ten to fifteen 2005 graduates. The best part about the event was that it was downtown in the loop and easy to get to after work,” said Murphy. The alumni office is very excited to have the commitment from all three alums and looks forward to this new partnership with them. One of the highlights of the evening was the formal commissioning of the officers of the newly visioned Marian Catholic Alumni Association by Sister Judine Hilbing, O.P., President, who read a prayer written for the occasion by Sister Margaret Schreiber, O.P. ’67, a Dominican Sister and an Alumna who authored the blessing, establishing a very poignant tradition. “This new leadership brings a fresh perspective to the MCHS Alumni Association. This was a great event to kick off the newly energized and revitalized Alumni Association. There was an electric energy in the room that was undeniable. With this strong kick off, and with this motivated leadership, our Alumni Association will definitely touch more people,” said Carol Burke Swanson ’81, Director of Alumni Relations. 2011 Metro Alumni & Friends A special thank you to our sponsors Liberty Creative Solutions, Inc. Marian Catholic Alumni Association Commissioning Prayer Good and gracious God, we give you thanks and praise for our high school experience at Marian Catholic. Through those years we were challenged to do our best and blessed with a faith-filled community made up of an outstanding faculty and staff, loving parents, and supportive peers.

Through this networking, direct our efforts so that as Marian Catholic alumni we may realize a global community committed to truth, justice, and peace. Tonight, as we commission our leadership, we ask your blessing upon Chris, Susan, and James. Be with them as they assume this responsibility. May we together, as leaders and members, fulfill our mission.

We strive, with your grace, to be “Scholars with a Soul” who preach the truth in your vineyard. Guide us to know how we can best advance the Dominican mission for future generations.

We ask our prayer through Christ and in the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Lead us on paths that build lasting friendships with Marian students and graduates so that together we can build a national network of Marian alumni.

Sister Dorothy Marie Solak, O.P., nine adult chaperones (who serve as drivers, worker bees and cook) plus twenty-five students going into their senior year at Marian Catholic, set off on the annual summer pilgrimage to Harlan, Kentucky for the first of two mission trips in conjunction with C.O.A.P. (Christian Outreach to Appalachian People) based in Harlan. An eye-opening and heartwarming adventure, MCHS students endured bug bites, sunburns, paint splatters and occasional bruises to accomplish their assigned jobs of siding, landscaping, demolition, painting, and site clean-up. After dinner, much-needed showers, and some free time, everyone gathered to reflect on the day’s events, many becoming aware of skills and talents they didn’t know they possessed. The group is pictured just before reflection time on the final night of the journey.

MCHS ATHLETICS

Senior Softball team members include Shannon Dee, Brianna Hall, Nora Zerante, Briana Clark, ErShawna Sadler, Becca Gray, Rachel Glenn and Amy Ziems.

SOFTBALL “We had eight amazing seniors this season,” said Kerri Evans, a newly-inducted member of the ESCC Hall of Fame. “They brought so much excitement and energy every day. Their leadership led us to the many great things we accomplished this season.

Led by a brilliant senior class, the softball squad finished off a superb four-year run by winning 29 games and their ninth East Suburban Catholic Conference title. The Spartans (29-6) swept St. Viator to clinch the ESCC crown, while all-time winningest coach Kerri Evans ’96 earned her 300th victory. “The 300 wins is exciting in that it is a reflection of the many great players that I have been fortunate to coach in the 11 years I have been here,” explained Evans, who owns a 301-98 career mark (.754) while leading Marian to seven of the ESCC titles. “Coaching at Marian has given me the opportunity to coach not only very talented players but also amazing young women.”

“One of the most important aspects of this team was our chemistry and the fact that we were Sister Kathleen Anne Tait, O.P. always having fun. We were able congratulates coach Kerri Evans ’96 on to do this because these seniors had her 300th win. the perfect mixture of talent and personality. The talent and desire to play is evident in that seven of them are going on to play college ball. This was an awesome group to work with, and I know the underclassmen and I already miss them.”

Evans actually has a hand in all of Marian’s ESCC softball titles, as she helped lead the Spartans to championships as a player in 1994 and 1995. Still prominent in the Marian records books, Kerri and assistant Cristin Evans ’99 saw this year’s senior class make a serious impact on the all-time records. While outstanding leadership came from seniors Shannon Dee, Brianna Hall, Nora Zerante and Amy Ziems, the record books gained a serious dent from Briana Clark, Rachel Glenn, Becca Gray and ErShawna Sadler.

Sparked by the memorable senior class, Marian put together a four-year record of 105-30, capping off the sparkling run with a 17-1 mark in the competitive ESCC for the title. “Our conference is always tough and some of our biggest rivals are in our conference,” Evans said. “This team made it a goal to take conference from day one and worked every day to accomplish this goal. It was always on their minds. There were many close games along the way and I think that made it even more exciting when we clinched it. It meant a lot to the girls to see their hard work and dedication pay off.”

The ESCC Player of the Year, Gray ranks first in the Marian records all-time for pitching wins (64), innings pitched (553.33), runs scored (161) and hits (189). Clark is tied as the all-time leader in home runs (17) and top ten in five other categories; Sadler ranks fourth all-time in batting average (.420) and Glenn is seventh all-time in homers (eight) and also top ten pitching in fewest walks allowed.

RECORDS MEANT TO BE BROKEN!

Mitch Zavesky ’12 returns a serve in tournament play.

Julian Childers ’12 finished the state tennis tournament in ninth place.

Kyle Scheffers ’14 smashes a serve with intensity.

MEN’S TENNIS Sectional champs Julian Childers (junior), Mitch Zavesky (junior), and Kyle Scheffers (freshman) advanced to state, leading the Spartans to an all-time best 12th-place team finish. Childers posted a 6-2 mark at the state tourney to finish ninth in singles for the second straight year. Led by Coach Scott Bodnar and seniors Nate Bodnar, Marcus Evans, Kenneth Moore and Sean O’Sullivan, Marian has compiled a 63-7 dual meet record over the last three campaigns.

The men’s tennis team turned in one of the most impressive seasons in school history and will enjoy the return of many key players. The squad made its mark by halting some staggering streaks. The Spartans won the ESCC championship by a half-point over Benet Academy, making this the first year since 1994 that the title was won by a team not from the north end (Benet, Carmel Catholic of Mundelein and St. Viator) of the conference. Marian followed up that accomplishment by winning its first IHSA Sectional in school history, marking the first time since sectional play began that Homewood-Flossmoor High School has not won or tied for the sectional title.

WATER POLO

WOMEN’S TRACK

In women’s water polo, Iona-bound senior Devin Green earned All-State recognition.

Sophomore Imani Haynes qualified for IHSA state in both the 100 and 300 meter hurdle events. She advanced to the final round in the 100-meter hurdles and posted an eighth-place finish in state.

Seniors Welcomed Into The Alumni Association -by current parent and Alumnus Jim Dee ’80 Most importantly, remember you are part of “THE” Marian family, and you are required to spend time with us. And since you are part of the family, we expect you to always represent your family well, and make us proud by serving others. Do it in a way that makes outsiders say, “Those Marian kids are really something special!” Remember, YOU ARE M-C. So seniors, as a token of your membership in this extended Marian family, we present you with these alumni pins. This is an Alumni Association tradition started with the class of 2009, and will continue with every class going forward. Welcome to the family, with 50 years of graduates and over 15,000 family members. We will see you soon – Good Luck and God Bless You.

I am a 1980 graduate of Marian Catholic. For those of you not so great in math, that means I started here as a freshman 35 years ago. Seniors, only four years ago you were graduating from 8th grade. Now in a few weeks, you’ll graduate from high school and join the MCHS Alumni Association with over 15,000 other “family” members. It’s a wonderful family full of people from all backgrounds and professions: priests, nuns, teachers, coaches, doctors, lawyers, firemen, and carpenters. Sure, we’ve got a few crazy aunts and uncles like any family, but I promised Mr. Heneghan I wouldn’t mention any names. Once you become an alum, stay in touch with your classmates, starting right away. In today’s world of SmartPhones and texting, of Facebook and Twitter, it really should be easier than ever. But get together in person, too. Come back to Marian to see a game, a concert, or a play. Visit your teachers, or participate in College Day. And absolutely make sure that Sister Teresa knows where you are so she can plan her college visits for the next few years.

Class of

2011

Marian Catholic High School celebrated its Fiftieth Annual Commencement ceremony on Monday, May 23, at the Tinley Park Holiday Inn and Convention Center with thousands of invited family members and guests in attendance. As the familiar sound of “Pomp and Circumstance” echoed from the MCHS Symphonic Band, 343 seniors filed in two by two, led by class moderators Jennifer Clifford ’88 and Barbara Murzyn. Sister Kathleen Anne Tait, O.P., MCHS Principal, presented the opening remarks. “I suspect that the significance of your diploma lies below the surface of that piece of parchment and is written between the lines of its documentation. The significance of this diploma is that it writes on your heart and imbeds in your memories, all the people, experiences and accomplishments that shaped your high school experience -- the teachers who challenged you, frustrated you and became your mentors. The classmates who shared courses and lunch tables, the teammates who saw you at your best and worst, fellow artists, cast members and section members who joined you in creative productions. Friends who celebrated your triumphs and gave you support through discouragements.” Class moderators Jennifer Clifford ’88 and

Sister Kathleen Anne Tait, O.P., Principal, addresses the capacity crowd at graduation.

Barbara Murzyn lead the Class of 2011 into the She continued, “A Marian Catholic diploma Marian Catholic Commencement Ceremony. testifies that you have been steeped in the Dominican charism and have learned the value of prayer, study, community and preaching that is best proclaimed in service to others. You’ve learned that study goes deeper than outward appearances. You’ve been trained in leadership that demands integrity and courage to speak the truth amidst adverse situations. This diploma signifies the deep sense of community that is Marian Catholic. A community that finds its source and substance in Jesus -- the One who shows us the way, and the One who promises to walk with you each moment of every day.”

Valedictorian Megan Murday (Georgetown University) addressed her classmates and those present at the ceremony. “One of the hallmarks of a Marian education is learning not only for the sake of being able to whip out facts on command, but studying in order to achieve a glimmer of the magnitude of God’s love and our responsibility to leave a legacy of that love for other people and future generations. Our dedicated teachers have inspired us to hold a respect for the world we live in and where we have come from, while optimistically looking forward to a better and more peaceful world that we can create. An education in and of itself is important, but our teachers have reinforced the notion that how we use the information is unquestionably more important. During our time in class, they have instilled within us a drive for truth, not obscured by bias or deceit. As we move forward in a world full of gimmicks and complexity, the faculty and staff have given us the skills to succeed and the faith that God is always by our side.

Class of 2011 Valedictorian Megan Murday reminded her classmates of all they had achieved to reach this point in their lives.

Prepared for Future Our faith and the Dominican Pillars of Prayer, Community, Preaching, and Study have driven us to expand our efforts to the world outside of our high school. We have fed the poor, collected stuffed animals for the sick, and constructed a roof for a family in need. We spent a week in Appalachia together, worked in the recruitment corps, and experienced Kairos together. Throughout our time in high school, we have become not only more intelligent, but also more aware and responsible. However, the most important point is that we are not alone- we are surrounded by the people who love us and see the best within us. As we move forward, my constant prayer for our class will be that we dare to chase whatever makes our heart beat faster and our eyes light up, we dare to love with all of our hearts, we dare to pursue God’s purpose for our lives, and I pray that we will all find the courage and dare to dream.” Senior Class President, Daryl Pugh (Georgetown University) reminded his classmates of those who helped them along the way. “Without the encouragement of our families and teachers, we would not have pushed ourselves to achieve high grades, tryout for sports teams, or challenge ourselves with AP courses. Let’s not forget to give recognition to God. Our theme last year was ‘With God, All Things Are Possible.’ None of this would have been possible without the help and love of God working on the outside and moving inside of us.” And finally, Sister Judine Hilbing, O.P., President, offered these remarks to the newest members of the Marian Catholic Alumni Association. “I hope you keep that connection with friends strong, and build on the foundation of community you have established at Marian Catholic High School. Make use of the social network to arrange gatherings and class reunions where face-to-face personal interaction can deepen the bonds of mutual support. If ever you are challenged by doubt or disappointment, reach deep inside your soul and know that the God of all Goodness is your source of inner strength. In those moments when you enjoy success and accomplishment, open yourself to the challenge of using your gifts for the good of the world into which you were born, and which you are called to preserve for future generations. A lifetime of opportunity is before you. Craft your future according to what is really important. Cultivate yourself as a person of integrity and leadership. Create the person you have the potential to become.”

With his renowned wit and humor, Senior Class President, Daryl Pugh thanked the families of the graduates and the MCHS faculty.

Mike Vuckovich gets a warm “Congratulations!” from Sister Judine Hilbing, O.P., President.

Alumni Notes Sister M. Paul McCaughey, O.P. ’67 Honored by National Catholic Education Association Sister M. Paul McCaughey, O.P. ’67, Superintendent of Catholic Schools of the Chicago Archdiocese, was named 2011 recipient of the National Catholic Education Association’s (NCEA) John F. Meyers Award at the NCEA’s annual convention and convocation in April. The award recognizes a significant contribution of national import to Catholic education through development, public relations, scholarship programs, financial management or government relations that impacts Catholic education. Sister Paul was honored for her work as Superintendent of Catholic Schools of the Chicago Archdiocese, a position she has held since July, 2008. Her efforts greatly contributed to the well-being of the Catholic School system within the Chicago Archdiocese. She developed standards and goals for all elementary schools in the Chicago Archdiocese; founded an Archdiocesan school board; and continues to establish and maintain beneficial relationships among clergy, students and community members. Enrollment in Chicago Archdiocese Catholic schools for 2010-2011 remained stable under her stewardship, for the first time in several years. Sister Paul’s professional acumen stems from more than 37 years of experience in Catholic education as a teacher and administrator, including ten years as Principal, then President of Marian Catholic High School, and six years as Principal at Sacred Heart-Griffin High School. A Springfield Dominican, her commitment to Catholic education shines brightly, and her leadership skills have been instrumental in laying the groundwork for generations of successful students and community leaders.

ALUMNI PROFILE

An Eye on the Future

Christopher Schlosberg ’04 is working towards a PhD at Washington University in St. Louis. His passion, paired with intricate and extensive technical knowledge, is the foundation upon which future advances in the fight against breast cancer will surely occur. By combining biology and computer science, Chris is at the forefront of medical advances in DNA research which strive to compare the changes in DNA that will mark the very origin of cancer cells in the human body. “Chemical changes that occur in DNA, known as methylation, have been implicated in the function of gene expression and cancer,” Chris explained. “I’m currently interested in identifying how specific patterns of these methylation changes affect the expression of biological processes with a variety of statistical and computational models.” The 2004 Senior Class President and Endowment Scholarship recipient remembers his Marian Catholic days in an unusual way. “My Marian memories are happy and a bit fuzzy by now, a place of comfort where the true caring and compassion of the faculty and students permeated my soul.” High school was not necessarily an easy time for Chris, who lived with his grandparents due to family difficulties. 16

“It was tough on everyone, emotionally and financially, but as a family, we knew Marian Catholic would provide the best education and opportunities for my future.” Chris credits Latin classes and Latin Club for his seamless transition into the medical field. He also fondly remembers being a student aide in the Attendance Office with Mrs. Katauskas and having the opportunity to interact with lots of students and faculty. Among his favorite activities was Service Club, helping people in whatever capacity he could. Later, he was elected senior class President by his peers and addressed them and their parents at graduation. “Parents, you are the reason my fellow classmates, my friends, have lived so beautifully, and you should be overwhelmed with joy to witness the culmination of their accomplishments,” he said back in 2004. “Teachers, you have been our mentors to teach us truth and faith we will need to face the darkness and the light of our future.” Chris married Adriana Dabrowski in May after a rather long courtship. “Adriana’s brother and I were in Cub Scouts together as kids. They lived in Dolton and I lived in South Holland. I met her back then and we have been together ever since.” Chris and Adriana live in St. Louis with their three dogs, Cocacho, Kilo, and Markov.

Stephanie Kuersten ’07, French, Japanese and East Asian Studies major with a minor in History of Ideas. “Marian helped me develop critical-thinking and analytical skills that have been especially useful in preparing me for honors classes and writing an honors thesis, as well as a capstone thesis. I feel much more prepared than some of my peers at North Central all because of what Marian taught me.”

RENSSELAER INDIANA - St. Joseph’s College Jen Szala ’08, Sports Management major, Athletic Training minor, Women’s Basketball team. “The challenging curriculum at Marian Catholic prepared me for college academics. Remembering Sister Margaret Rose Aultz, O.P. September 12, 1928 ~ June 24, 2011

& Sister M. Annette Bocke, O.P. March 25, 1915 ~ May 14, 2011

Sister Margaret Rose Aultz, O.P. (September 12, 1928 ~ June 24, 2011) taught at Marian Catholic from 1966 to 1977 and at St. Paul’s in Chicago Heights from 1997 to 2001. -From her 2006 Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award nomination Sr. Margaret Rose lived the Spirit of Marian Catholic High School’s philosophy and Mission. She was most definitely one of Marian’s PR people. She spent several years at Marian on two different occasions as a teacher and tutor of Spanish. Her undying loyalty and love for Marian were contagious. She loved her students and they loved her. One of her most famous quotes has always been, “There is no one like the Marian students!” In addition to her spirited, vibrant personality, she was known by all students, not just the students she taught, by alumni, and by parents for her famous hall greeting, “Hola!” to all she met. She was Sister “Hola!” to all. Through the Discovery in Service Program, which she initiated and taught, she started programs of service to underprivileged children. These service experiences left indelible marks on the lives of her students, some pursuing service as a career, all carrying a spirit of service into their adult world. In later years, when Sister returned to Marian as a successful and loved Spanish tutor, she began outreach programs for Hispanic children and adults in the Chicago Heights area. She was always tapping someone’s shoulder for clothes for her Hispanic friends or treats for the kids or for anything that would make their lives happier and easier. Yes, in spirit and in mission, in heart and in soul, Sister Margaret Rose exemplified the spirit of Marian Catholic High School.

Sister M. Annette Bocke, O.P. (March 25, 1915 ~ May 14, 2011) Sister M. Annette is fondly remembered by many of her former high school students from Sacred Heart Academy/ Sacred Heart-Griffin High School, Springfield; Marian Catholic High School, Chicago Heights; St. Paul, Odell; St. John, Carrollton; Routt Catholic High School, Jacksonville; and St. Augustine, Richmond, Mich. She taught English, French, Latin, Spanish, journalism, history and theology.
