Marian Catholic Welcomes Vice-President for Institutional Advancement Marian Catholic High School is very pleased to welcome Vincent Krydynski, III ’81, as the newlyappointed Vice-President for Institutional Advancement. A graduate of St. Mary’s University (MN) and John Marshall Law School, Vince comes to Marian Catholic from The Law Office of Krydynski & Frigo, LLC. He is a very active member of St. Michael Catholic School and Parish in Orland Park, as well as a member of the Knights of Columbus. He serves as a field advocate for the Marriage Tribunal of the Archdiocese of Chicago and as a member of the Orland Park and Tinley Park Chambers of Commerce and of Business Networking International. Vince was honored as Alumnus of the Year at Marian Catholic’s 2013 Hall of Fame Dinner in recognition of his outstanding and distinguished service to his profession. He served on the Marian Catholic Advisory Board and continued his commitment when it transitioned to a Board of Directors. Through the years, he has been actively involved with the Marian Catholic Alumni Association, serving as an executive officer and assuming active roles on committees that have helped to shape Marian Catholic for the future. As an active member of the Marian Catholic Alumni Association, Vince continually reaches out to his colleagues to encourage membership and participation. As an officer of the association, he was instrumental in beginning the tradition of
inducting the graduating class into the Alumni Association at the Annual Pinning Mass. While Vince credits his wife Loretta and alumna daughter Hannah’10 for much of his motivation in wanting to serve Marian Catholic, he tracks his initial commitment back to his parents, Mary Ellen and Vince Jr., who through their sacrifice and commitment to Catholic education allowed him to develop and mature as a Spartan in the halls of Marian. “Marian was the beginning of my life-journey,” he said. “It was my opportunity to begin finding out more about who I was through new friendships, new freedoms, new responsibilities, and new experiences while under the ever watchful eyes of the Dominican Sisters.” Vince looks forward to meeting the new challenges that await the Vice President of Institutional Advancement, especially in the area of reaching out to new donors and increasing the number and size of gifts to the school. Trained as an attorney, Vince is skilled in the art of conversation, listening, management, mediating, and problemsolving. These attributes, along with his strong commitment to Catholic education and to the larger civic and church communities, will serve him well in his new position. A proven team member, Vince understands, supports, and lives the Mission of Marian Catholic High School. Vince looks forward to beginning his ministry as Vice President for Institutional Advancement on Monday, August, 12, and Marian Catholic welcomes him.

Sister Judine Hilbing, O.P. Celebrates Jubilee Sister Judine Hilbing, O.P., President of Marian Catholic High School, is celebrating 50 years of religious life as a Dominican Sister of Springfield. She entered the Dominican Community on August 27, 1961, and made her first profession of vows on June 19, 1963. Sister’s earlier educational ministry was in the classroom, serving as a teacher in the Springfield Diocese at St. Agnes, Holy Family, and Christ the King and later moving to the Chicago area to teach at St. Walter School in Chicago and St. Thomas More in Elgin. As a principal, Sister continued her educational ministry at St. John Neumann School in Maryville, IL and St. Christina and St. Michael in Chicago. Sister Judine holds a B.A. from St. Ambrose College and a Master’s in Education from the University of Illinois, with a certificate in School Administration. As the President of Marian Catholic High School, Sister Judine has certainly made an impact. Her efforts to maintain a quality educational and spiritual environment in which students can grow to their full potential is evident in her daily practice. “Throughout my life of service as a Dominican of Springfield, I have been abundantly blessed at each place of ministry by many wonderful persons. I am grateful for the faithful support of each companion on the journey of life and give thanks for the ever-present gift of God’s grace,” Sister said. Sister Judine will celebrate her Jubilee with the Springfield Dominican Community at Sacred Heart Convent in August, 2013.
expressed the importance of having the support from alumni and friends as he introduced the football program’s new spirit to the Marian Community. He invited everyone to attend the football games this fall. “Marian Catholic has always been a part of me,” Verde told his fellow alumni. “Many people at Marian have shaped me into the person I am today. After nine years of working for other schools, I have come back home to my roots.” Verde was excited to meet the alumni and he was honored to be able to share his thoughts with those in attendance. He commented that he found it amazing how Marian alumni relate to each other regardless of their graduation year. Christopher Ormsby ’93, President of the Marian Catholic Alumni Association, also shared his views on giving back to Marian Catholic. “As a Marian Catholic alum, I have found that the best place for me to give my time is the Alumni Association,” explained Ormsby. “I believe I have benefited from my experience. I encourage every alum to find their place within Marian Catholic, whether it be through the Alumni Association, athletics department, or as a volunteer.” Gerriann Fagan ’81 currently resides in Birmingham, Alabama, yet was able to attend the event while on a business trip to Chicago. “I was glad that the Class of 1981 was so well represented, and that I was able to make it downtown for the classy, warm and welcoming event,” Fagan said. If you are interested in becoming involved in the MCHS Alumni Association, please contact the Director of Alumni Relations, Carol Burke Swanson ’81, cswanson@marianchs.com.

Planning for the Future Generation When the Marian Catholic Board of Directors gathers in August for their annual retreat, the primary focus of the day will be to initiate the Strategic Planning Process. Several members of the school community have already been at work during the summer with Amy Holsinger of Project Enroll to ensure that key information and statistical data will be in place prior to attempting the critical work of providing for the future of Marian Catholic High School through the exercise of strategic planning. “We are confident in our ability to move through this process successfully,” said Sister Judine Hilbing, O.P., President of Marian Catholic High School. “We have secured the consulting services of Lorraine Nelson Consulting, Inc. who will work with the Directors of the Board and participants in the Vision Groups.”
The goal of strategic planning for Marian Catholic is to clarify a consistent Mission; assess programs as they support that Mission; and make adjustments for the future. The participation of Vision Groups will be integral to the process and will help to ensure that the collective wisdom of the school community will emerge. Marian Catholic’s last strategic plan occurred in 2003 and led to the TC2L Capital Campaign. The preliminary goal of TC2L was $5.25 million and was later adjusted to $6.3 million as the success of the campaign evolved. Planning for the future and providing for future generations is always an exciting exercise that strengthens the institution. Marian Catholic is excited to begin the process of providing for future generations through sound strategic planning.
Making Choices for the Future!
Alumni Association: Networking in Action Growing up James Hughes ’84 knew he wanted to attend Marian Catholic High School, but did not realize the impact that decision would have on his future and his career. Marian Catholic meant opportunity for Jim, a place where he would be exposed to the resources needed to become a successful adult. To ensure the resources to be a Spartan, he worked two part-time jobs throughout his high school years to help pay his own tuition. With diligence and determination, he turned his aspiration into a reality. During Jim’s time at Marian he received a strong education and developed many friendships which he still cherishes today. After high school, Jim went on to get a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and minor in Business from Eastern Illinois University. As his major, psychology intrigued James; however, he was hesitant to pursue it as his occupation. He felt a bit lost, so he began to research other potential avenues and he reached out to friends. Through Ray Burley ’84, a Marian Catholic alum and friend, Jim landed an interview which Ray’s brother in-law Rob Wygant ’81 facilitated. That interview began Jim’s life-long career in the banking industry when it led to a job at American National Bank. Jim later went back to school at Georgetown
3
University to earn a Graduate Certificate in Banking. As he reflects on his professional life, Jim credits Marian Catholic for giving him quality networking opportunities that led him where he is today. “I am truly grateful for the friends and network that I have gained from attending Marian Catholic,” says Hughes. “My experience at Marian has certainly shaped the person I am today.” Social networking has become ubiquitous and Jim encourages students to be aware of the character of the people they are connected with and leveraging those relationships to learn more about career options. “A fantastic way to learn about an industry or profession is to ask someone you know who understands the everyday realities of the role.” “It’s never too early to start networking and learning about different industries,” said Hughes. “Marian Catholic can offer ample opportunities for students who seek career advice.” Jim encourages Marian Catholic students to learn more about the professions of their classmates’ parents. Jim is very active with the Marian Catholic Alumni Association and has participated in Career Days at MCHS, an annual event when alumni and friends share their professional experiences with current students. Jim’s involvement in Marian Alumni events is another way for him to give back to the institution that has made such an impact on his personal and professional life. Jim encourages Marian Catholic Alumni to work to “open doors” for the Marian Alumni who are newly minted college graduates, just as Rob and Ray once did for him.

During the first week of summer vacation, 29 Marian Catholic upcoming seniors and 14 adult chaperones volunteered their time and efforts to assist others in partnership with Christian Outreach to Appalachia People. Working in the heat and humidity of Harlan, Kentucky, these hard-working Marian Catholic students and volunteers shingled a roof, tacked up insulation, landscaped the grounds of a newly built house, and accomplished much during their busy week. While they worked in Harlan, these students had the opportunity to visit with families, hear their stories and learn the Appalachian culture and history. Annual trip supervisor and Marian Catholic teacher Linda Savick said, “The students adjusted beautifully and did any job willingly and with enthusiasm. Many of the students shared that this was the best thing they had ever done. Everyone was so positive and enriched by the experience.” As a trip ritual, students gathered together after the laborintensive days and reflected on their experiences. Many became aware of skills and talents they didn’t know they possessed.
“Many of the students shared that this was the best thing they had ever done.”
“Students walk away with a sense of empowerment, knowing they have the ability to make a positive change in the world,” said Sr. Dorothy Marie Solak, O.P., Service Director at Marian Catholic, who considers this volunteer opportunity a transforming experience.

Class of 2013 Graduation Valedictorian, Timothy LaVelle (Harvard University)
Senior Class President, Myeisha Hansbrough (University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign)
Graduates Haley Denton (Saint Ambrose University), Steven Tortorello ’04 (MCHS Faculty), and Elizabeth Frabotta (Indiana University)
“We join with your families and friends in saying that it has been a privilege to share in God’s plan for you, and we look forward to the men and women you will become. Congratulations. We place you in God’s hands.” Valedictorian Timothy LaVelle (Harvard University), explained to his classmates that Marian Catholic gave them more than a quality education. They were given tools to thrive as educated, moral individuals. “At Marian, we did not just learn to memorize the periodic table of elements or the definition of justice. We learned about ourselves and we developed our relationships with God and each other. Sometimes these relationships were strained, but the Marian Catholic community gave us both the knowledge and the guidance to develop our faith and our love for others. We learned that though we may be lucky enough to have many blessings, we must use our time and talents to help those around us. We are all connected and, whether we know it or not, we have already made a difference to each other and the world. “Our experience at Marian Catholic has not only given us the facts, but also taught us how to think, Veritas, the truth. Veritas is not just about honesty, but about the pursuit of deeper meaning in all disciplines and fields. As we go to college and into the world, Marian has challenged us to take the spirit of Veritas with us wherever we go, as we explore science, to find the truths of nature; humanities, to find the truth in people’s minds; or religious life, to find the truth in people’s hearts. No matter what each of us decides to become, it is our duty to find Veritas, and spread it to others.” Senior Class President Myeisha Hansbrough (University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign), took a moment to reflect, to share with her classmates that every one of them deserves happiness and success, and to congratulate the Class of 2013. “Your hard work and dedication has finally paid off. Your true honesty, integrity, respect, and enthusiasm has truly shown. Your years of study and prayer have led you to this day. It seems like just yesterday we started from the bottom, as little freshmen, but now we’re here! We are graduates, we are alumni, and we are the Class of 2013. We can officially say that we have left our mark on Marian Catholic High School. We are leaving behind our legacy and we are starting a new chapter in our lives. “I wish you all the best of luck in your future endeavors. I hope that you never let fear stand in your way of success. Always keep in mind the morals and values instilled in you by your parents and teachers. Congratulations and God bless, Class of 2013!”
Marian Catholic High School celebrated its 52nd annual commencement ceremony on Monday, May 20, at the Tinley Park Holiday Inn and Convention Center. Thousands of family members and guests attended the joyous event to witness the Class of 2013 walk across the stage and receive diplomas. As the Class of 2013 set out to make an impact on the world, President Sister Judine Hilbing, O.P., encouraged the graduates to keep focused on their personal goals and dreams by creating a space in which to listen to the Spirit of God’s goodness. “As a community of people alive in the Spirit, we are called to fuel the fire of justice and peace, the fire of integrity and leadership, the fire of talent and academics,” said Sister Judine. “Graduates, as you pursue your dreams, you will encounter success and sometimes failure, joy and occasional disappointment. There will be moments of great pride and some regret. In every situation of life, be it a challenging defeat or a celebration of success, it will be in the ‘God Space’ of your heart that you will find the warmth of God’s Spirit to give light to your path. “As the Class of 2013, you have the capacity to light a fire in the world with your passion for excellence. You possess outstanding intelligence and talent; you have demonstrated leadership and service; and you have tended the fire of God’s Spirit within your soul. We have watched you grow to this moment of success, and we look forward to the many ways in which you will continue to have a positive impact on the world. May you do so with the warmth and the light of the Spirit of God.” Sister Kathleen Anne Tait, O.P., MCHS Principal, also addressed the students, reminding them that the foundation they gained at Marian Catholic has shaped their souls as well as their academic life. “There is no doubt that you are prepared for your next step. The number one comment from our alumni is that Marian Catholic prepares students for college with the ability to do research, write papers, analyze problems, comprehend not only the written or spoken word, but the implied meaning as well. You’ve been working diligently these last four years, and tonight Marian Catholic will give you your diploma certifying that you are prepared for your next step in education and professional training. “During your last four years, you’ve also been formed in ways that aren’t quite as evident on your high school transcript. Marian Catholic educates Scholars with a Soul…we have partnered with your parents and families to also give you a foundation for the person you are maturing to be. Who you want to be is perhaps the more pertinent question at this point in your life. 6

Seniors Welcomed into MCHS Alumni Association The class of 2013 was welcomed into the Marian Catholic Alumni Association by Timothy ’78 and Eileen Gallagher ’78 Daw during an All-School Mass on April 30. Between the two alumni, 35 of their family members have attended Marian Catholic. Tim and Eileen were able to welcome two more alums at this year’s Pinning Mass, their son Stephen Daw ’13 and niece Christine Diluia ’13. “I guess you might say that Marian Catholic is a tradition in our family, but truly it might be better said that Marian’s traditions are a part of our family,” said Eileen. “Our families live by the values and responsibilities that we were taught at Marian as well as a sense of pride in our community and a responsibility to perform service to it.” Tim addressed the Class of 2013 on the importance of treating Marian Catholic like a family and to cherishing the faith, values, and opportunities the institution provided them. “The significance of the pins that are about to be bestowed upon the graduating Seniors signify that they have been given the opportunities, the foundation, and that they are part of a community, Scholars with a Soul. They will always be members of this community. “This community is like family. Those you graduate with, those who have come before you, and those who come after you share common bonds, that foundation. As alumni, many years and decades after our graduations, we share our connections. It is up to you and for your benefit that you stay connected and grounded to the faith and principles that grow from your MCHS experience,” said Tim. At the end of Mass, each member of the Senior Class received a Marian Catholic Alumni Pin, distributed by alumni faculty members. The Alumni Pin is a token of membership in the Alumni Association. The tradition started with the class of 2009.

MCHS Band Heading Back to Macy’s Parade
Confetti rains down on MCHS Band Members as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade acceptance is announced.
After a rigorous selection process, the Marian Catholic Marching Band has been invited to march in the 2013 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. To be one of the few selected, each applicant band must submit recordings, video, photos, recommendations and a resume of accomplishments. Needless to say Marian Catholic’s Marching Band was able to fit the hefty bill. With seven Grand Nationals Championships, the Marian Catholic Band has garnered the most wins in Bands of America history, Marian being the only high school in history that has won seven Grand Nationals. In the State of Illinois Marching Band Championships, Marian is undefeated in its class since 1980. This 33-year undefeated streak at State is unprecedented in any arena. These accomplishments make Marian Catholic’s Band Program one of the most outstanding in the United States. The Marian Band’s educational and competitive philosophies have been used as models for band programs in nearly every state in the country. The revered program is known coast-to-coast, and it is not surprising that they have been invited to perform at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade for the third time in the program’s history. Director Greg Bimm has infused in his students a simple, yet meaningful, philosophy: PRIDE—Personal Responsibility In Daily Efforts. Bimm teaches his students that they should be able to stare themselves straight in the face after each day and know, that no matter the outcome, they could not have tried harder. He is very excited for his students to perform at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Bimm is proud that they have earned this experience. “This is an exciting time. There is different kind of energy when you are getting ready for a performance at this level,” said Bimm. “It’s one more very special experience that our students get to be a part of. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is one of the two greatest parades in the United States, making this an experience you cannot replicate anywhere else.” Once in New York, the band, which consists of 225 members, will have one trial run to practice their show on the parade route. As one can imagine, many elements are involved in the minute and a half performance. Within the time given to each marching band, Marian will try to create a performance that is festive and entertaining. During the six-day trip to New York, the band also plans to do some sightseeing. They will tour the Empire State Building, Central Park, Statue of Liberty and Lincoln Center, as well as attend a Broadway show.

Coach Brian Patterson and senior Sam Kinder earned ESCC Coach and Player of the Year honors, respectively. Meanwhile, senior Olivia Giannetti and junior Celeste Friel helped out Kinder in leading the Spartans to a magical season. While baseball was unable to repeat the IHSA State Championship of 2012, the Spartans actually compiled a stronger regular-season record against one of the strongest schedules in the state, going 22-15 overall. In individual sports, Marian made its mark in both women’s tennis and track and field. A four-time IHSA state qualifier, senior Imani Haynes concluded her career with a ninth-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles at the IHSA women’s track and field state meet. In men’s track and field, sophomore Matt Martinson capped off a record-setting campaign (two school records) with a 20th place finish in the high jump at the IHSA state meet. Men’s tennis put the icing on a successful 19-7 season by sending three representatives to the IHSA state meet. Both an ESCC and IHSA Sectional champion, junior Kyle Scheffers qualified in singles and the tandem of senior Tim LaVelle and junior Patrick Murday made the grade in doubles.
There’s a couple clichés in sports that Marian Catholic rolled out for the spring sports season. Women’s soccer went with “You don’t want to peak too early.” Women’s lacrosse opted for “There’s no champion like the first champion.” Despite winning just three matches during the regular season, the Spartan soccer team got red hot in the postseason to capture three consecutive wins and advance to the school’s first IHSA Sweet 16 appearance since 2008. The upset trail began with victories over Crete-Monee and number two seed Lincoln-Way West to win the Rich East Class 2A Regional. Spartan junior goalie Sarah Sieracki stayed hot, as Marian advanced to the Lincoln-Way West Sectional finals with a 1-0 decision over number three seed Tinley Park. The Cinderella ride finally came to an end with a 2-0 setback to Lemont. Senior leadership from the likes of Mary Ann Crosetto, Christina Franzese, Colleen Rynne, and Nora Santschi allowed the Spartans to save the best for last! For women’s lacrosse, Marian Catholic will go down in history as the inaugural East Suburban Catholic Conference Champion on both the varsity and junior varsity levels. The Spartans claimed both crowns in dominant fashion, going 5-0 in league play with the varsity outscoring ESCC competition, 89-33. 9

Spartan Choir performing at the Spring Choral Concert.
The Marian Catholic High School Choral Program will attend the 2nd annual American Music Performance (AMP) Nationals for Top Choirs at Carnegie Hall in New York City this spring. The AMP Nationals revolutionizes the choral competition festival model for top choirs. During the event, Marian Catholic choral students will enjoy adjudicated performances, on-stage performance reviews, observational requirements, and full one-hour clinics by COA’s Master Clinicians; including Jerry Blackstone, Karen Kennedy, Joshua Habermann, and Gene Peterson. Choirs will perform their own music for world renowned clinicians and will have an hour long clinic with these clinicians after our performance. The Marian Catholic Choir will work directly with composer Z. Randall Stroope on a world premier composition. Mr. Stroope will discuss the creative process, and “unpack” the lyrics/poetry integral to the song, the music and everything else that went into the composition to be premiered. Bill Bach, a junior at Marian Catholic, is excited to build upon his musical talents and make memories with his classmates. “Traveling to New York City and performing at the historic Carnegie Hall with my high school choir is a once in a lifetime experience. This opportunity will give our choir a chance to grow as performers and learn from world renowned composers.”

Marian Bids Farewell to Loyal Faculty Mary Margaret Flanagan’s career dates back to 1968. She has been instrumental in helping to develop the curriculum for the Physical Education Department. Her career reflects early involvement with the GAA and coaching assignments in Cheerleading, Basketball, and Softball. Mary has been a very dedicated professional and has always placed concern for her students in the forefront. Things will certainly be different in the Physical Education Department; however, her input in helping to develop the culture of Marian Catholic over the years has been invaluable. Ann Waller has shared her talents with Marian Catholic High School for the past 43 years. What was supposed to be a three-week assignment as teaching in the Home Economics Department evolved into a position as Dean of Women. Ann found joy in working with students and families because every family was so supportive. Her mission was to teach young women life skills and help parents in dealing with adolescents. Marian Catholic was more than a place of employment for Ann. All four of her children attended Marian, with her sons involved in sports and girls in band and the honors society. Ann is looking forward to spending more time with her children and grandchildren.

Jon Wooddell’s mission goes beyond the classroom; he strives to prepare his students to be lifelong learners and who take ownership in their own learning experiences. For the past 35 years Jon has taken great pride in the process of preparing his students for college writing. He has given students the opportunity to appreciate and decode classic literature and its influence on humanity. Jon is highly respected by his colleagues from his wealth of knowledge and mentorship. Nancy Holmes taught World Language for the past 28 years at Marian Catholic after her retirement from the public school system. Her love for teaching young minds the art of culture and language is evident in her dedication to the students. Her philosophy of being a lifelong learner is apparent in how frequently she updated her educational materials. Nancy also served as a Department and Curriculum Chair where she was always ready to work for the well-being of Marian and the students. Nancy has created a safe, nurturing environment for both her students and the World Language Department. She will be a tough act to follow.

Jody Haaker has served Marian Catholic since 1986. Her involvement began as an instructor in the Physical Education Department and a long and notable career as the women’s tennis coach, working with a large number of state qualifiers and placers. Jody worked as an Associate Athletic Director and has more recently served in the capacity of Department Chair for Physical Education. Her loyalty and passion to work with students will be missed but never forgotten. Sister Marion Sitkiewitz, O.P. has worked as the Archivist and the Speech and Fine Art’s Program Cheerleader for the past nine years. Her passion for promoting student accomplishment was apparent in her excitement while archiving. Sister Marion was an inspiration for the Marian Catholic Speech Team and Theatre Department; she never missed a speech tournament or theatre performance. Sister Marion has instilled a religious quality within the Fine Arts Department that is second to none. The Speech and Theatre students hope she visits next year!

Bernard Jablonski has shared his vision and talent with Marian Catholic for the past 31 years. The Marian Catholic family wishes him all the best in his next career opportunity and are sad to see him go. Bernie filled many different roles within the Language Arts and Fine Arts Departments over the years. He created space for students to fine tune their creative talents; donated an abundant amount of time and effort teaching students the art of drama; and built beautiful stage sets that were admired by audiences. Good luck, Bernie, on your next endeavor. Marian Catholic sends best wishes to all retirees as they enjoy much deserved rest and spending time with their families and friends.

CAREER DAY!
Thank you to our alumni and friends for taking time out of busy schedules to share career experiences with our students.
Marian Catholic students had an opportunity to gain insight on many professions during the school’s Annual Career Day on Monday, April 29. The event featured more than 50 alumni and friends who volunteered their time to share their career experiences with freshmen and sophomores during three 25-minute sessions. MCHS students are given tools and resources to become successful adults; however, planning for the future can be complex. Career Day provides the chance to look at the larger picture and consider career opportunities.

Sound Lab Grades 5 & 6
Veterinary Science Grades 7 & 8
Music is broadly defined as the organization of sound in space. In this class, students take part in a series of labs that will increase musical knowledge and demonstrate its interdisciplinary nature. Decode it! Learn how classical composers encrypted secret messages into their music and develop your own musical ciphers. Explore how patterns manifest themselves in dodecaphonic (12tone) musical compositions and create your own tone rows. Map it! Plot the source, notate the pitch, and measure the amplitude of the real-world ambient noises that surround us. What is the difference between music and noise? Dissect it! Learn how your brain processes sound and why no two musical instruments sound alike. Investigate the overtone series and test how well various substances transmit sound waves. Write it! Expand your musical vocabulary and creative writing abilities through listening sessions and short writing assignments.
The average doctor does not have patients who chase cars or are plagued by hairballs, but veterinarians do! This introduction to the world of veterinary medicine enables students to explore a career path that many are eager to follow. Hands-on activities include working with both microscopes and dissection tools as students learn about concepts and engage in activities that practitioners use in this profession. Participants come to understand the commitment required to heal animals of all shapes and sizes, and are thus provided with much insight into this fascinating discipline. Creating a Passion into a Profession “I want my students to gain skills that can help them deal with stress even when they are not physically in the studio,” said Zach. “It is important for me to instill the healing and wellness aspect of yoga into my teachings. I also want all of my students to feel comfortable in my class. I find that people can be intimidated by the practice. A goal of mine is to break down those barriers to show that yoga can benefit everyone.” Zach has always been mindful of his health. At the age of ten, he was diagnosed with leukemia. Growing up, Zach had always had his parents to oversee his health, but for the first time he would have to take complete ownership of his wellness. For him, yoga has provided empowerment. Yoga has given Zach the tools to deal with his anxiety organically. Yoga has also ignited a passion to help others feel empowered over their personal health. The yogi understands that his students cannot attend yoga classes every day, so he composes newsletters that he sends out to his followers and has created a website called Zach Does Yoga. The site offers healthy tips, addresses health issues, and provides his class and workshop schedules. Visit his site at www.zachdoesyoga.wix. com/zachdoesyoga.
After graduating from Illinois Wesleyan University in 2006, Zachary Zube ’02 decided to pursue his acting career in Chicago. The recent graduate brought his talents to the Windy City to turn his passion into a professional career. To Zach’s surprise, he would discover another life passion and that too would become a profession. As a young adult, Zach found himself on his own for the first time. He was responsible to create a healthy balance of work and personal time, while dealing with a vigorous work schedule. Zach became busier with auditions and prepping for performances, and found it difficult to take time for himself. He sought different techniques to help manage his health, and realized that the benefits from yoga would provide him the healthy outlet he was seeking. Zach began practicing yoga on a regular basis. He enjoyed the physical benefits, but began relying on the practice for the wellness and healing elements that yoga can provide. In 2008, Zach started teacher training with the goal to help others find peace and clarity in daily life.
