MARIAN GRADUATE WELCOMED AS PRINCIPAL Beginning with the 2014-2015 academic year, Marian Catholic welcomes a new principal. Mr. Steve Tortorello ’04 begins his tenure at the beginning of July, as the current principal, Sister Kathleen Anne Tait, O.P., departs for her new dual responsibilities as Director of the Dominican Association of Secondary Schools (DASS) and Director of Mission Advancement for the Dominican of Springfield. Tortorello has been a member of the Marian Catholic family for more than 15 years, beginning with his earliest days as a student. After graduating from Marian Catholic in 2004, Tortorello went on to earn three degrees from the University of Notre Dame: Bachelor of Arts in English and American Studies, Masters of Education, and Masters of Educational Administration. Since his return to Marian Catholic in 2010, Tortorello has served as a freshmen English teacher and an Advanced Placement history teacher, quickly earning the praise of his students as an outstanding educator. He has consistently gone above and beyond to provide for the needs of his students, spending many hours after school to help seniors with their college applications. Outside of the classroom, Tortorello has enhanced school spirit and rallied students to support each other at various extracurricular events. He has worked to promote the future of Marian Catholic through involvement with recruitment and marketing committees. Devoted to his Catholic faith, Tortorello has offered major support to the Kairos Retreat Program. Tortorello becomes the eighth principal of Marian Catholic and is the first layperson
to hold the position. At this important time in the school’s history, he offers the unique perspective of having been on both sides of the desk. Tortorello recognizes the high expectations placed on students, but also understands the responsibilities of the faculty and staff. Tortorello embraces Catholic Dominican values, living them as part of his daily life. He has a keen sense of the school’s Mission and will work hard to ensure that Marian Catholic remains a faith-filled community devoted to excellence in academics, athletics, and fine arts. Tortorello brings strong energy and enthusiasm to the role of principal and offers a new vision that is sure to inspire the institution for many years to come. Chairperson of the Mission Integration Committee of the Board of Directors, Dr. Joseph Hamann ’79 is excited about the announcement of Tortorello as the first lay principal of Marian Catholic High School. “Steve is a gifted educator and dynamic leader with outstanding interpersonal skills,” said Hamann. “I have great confidence that he will work with the leadership team of Marian Catholic to embrace the abiding ethic of providing young men and women with a premier education steeped in Catholic values and Dominican truths.” Tortorello comes to his new position in tandem with three outstanding assistant principals. Dr. Shirley Morris, the Assistant Principal for Academics, assures the strength of the collegiatelevel curriculum, offering expertise and direction to the academic leadership platform. Mr. John Kozojed, the Assistant Principal of Student Services, has worked closely with Tortorello over the years and brings wisdom and a lifetime of committed service to this time of transition.
Mr. Steve Tortorello ’04
Mr. Jack Heneghan, the Assistant Principal of Operations, works with individual student and faculty issues, helping each person in the school environment to achieve his/her highest level of good citizenship. The cumulative knowledge and experience of current leadership continues to be a tremendous asset to the Marian Catholic Community as Tortorello assumes the responsibilities previously held by Sister Kathleen Anne Tait, O.P. In reflecting on her decision to select Steve Tortorello from a large group of qualified candidates, Sister Judine Hilbing, O.P., looked to the future. “Throughout the course of this most recent academic year, the school community has been engaged in a process of strategic planning. As we prepare the final document for publication I am confident that Steve has the vision, enthusiasm, and energy to carry our 2020 VISION into the future, ensuring the long-term vitality of Marian Catholic High School.”

Marian Catholic held its Annual Career Day on Monday, May 5, giving Marian Catholic freshman and sophomores the opportunity to learn about numerous careers from those who work and live them every day. Nearly 50 alumni and guests graciously offered their time to educate students about a variety of professions. The occupations included architects, engineers, marine biologist, pilots, and many more. This was a great opportunity not only for students to learn about several fields of work, but also to meet many accomplished alumni and friends. “It was interesting to get an idea of what happens in the real world. The speakers I was able to hear provided me with some wonderful insight as to what I can expect in the future,” said Jesiah Jones ’17. Career Day offers three 25-minute sessions, during which students see a glimpse of their future while listening to alumni and friends.

As guest speaker, Mike Taylor, Marian Catholic’s Head Men’s Basketball coach, spoke about the importance of alumni support. He also expressed how pleasant it is to see familiar faces, especially in the stands at the basketball games. “It’s always a pleasure to see all the alumni come around. Small conversations or a simple hello from former students and athletes are what makes a teacher or coach’s day.” Coach Taylor also talked about some of his current athletes and their successful season this past year. “Marian Catholic offers so much to every student. I had 10 seniors that were true leaders on and off the court. As a teacher and a coach it’s a pleasure to want to be around these kids because they all work so hard in every aspect of life, in the classroom, in the gym, and in the community.” Hannah Krydynski ’10 attended the gathering for the first time and thought it was a great experience. “The Metro gathering was so fun! I got to network with a lot of really interesting Marian alumni, but I hope to see more young alumni at the next event!” If you are interested in becoming involved in the MCHS Alumni Association, please contact the Director of Alumni Relations, Carol Burke Swanson ’81 at cswanson@marianchs.com.

HARD WORK PAYS OFF FOR GRADUATES! Marian Catholic High School celebrated its 53rd Annual Commencement Ceremony on Monday, May 19, at the Tinley Park Convention Center. On a beautiful spring evening, friends, family, and guests of the Marian Catholic community gathered to honor the graduating class of 2014.
play a small role in their development. Remembering the graduates as freshmen and witnessing their growth through the years, is a source of overwhelming pride shared with everyone in the room.” Valedictorian Patrick Murday (University of Notre Dame) reminded the 2014 graduates on how their true uniqueness lies within the relationships they have built in the last four years. “Achievements do not necessarily define the Class of 2014. Our identity lies in the bonds of community and friendships that we all have come to share these past four years. Although coming from various schools, we banded together as underclassmen, creating a sense of almost undue pride amongst ourselves which never ceased to annoy the other classes, especially when we beat the seniors in class basketball our sophomore year. While we may at times have gotten a little crazy, we stepped up to the plate to lead Marian as upperclassmen, helping to build a Spartan community that will last long after our years in those halls. “Our class will always be able to cherish great memories that we have made, from those remarkable Friday night football or basketball games to celebrating all-school Mass to those constant rounds of ninja that we played during Freshman year Emmaus even to those dares we had to do from the ‘Bet you won’t’ game these past few weeks. It’s these small moments that have allowed each of us to create an unforgettable Marian experience. “Although we have been reflecting upon the past, we must also look towards the future as we are on the brink of an entirely new adventure. Many things will change in the coming months but one thing should not: our faith in God. These past four years at Marian have prepared us to live out our faith lives. Those debates in theology were not to argue for the sake of arguing but to form our own opinions on faith and moral issues that appear in today’s world. When we leave in August, it will be the first time for most of us in which we take our faith into our own hands: letting our relationship with God grow stronger or falter. My prayer for all of us is that we never forget our most important relationship in the midst of many diversions that college life will provide.” Lastly, Marian Catholic President, Sister Judine Hilbing, O.P., greeted the newest members of the Marian Catholic Alumni Association with these remarks. “My dear graduates, I pray that the pillars of your Dominican education will serve as the source of grace to sustain you as you create the individual and unique stories of your life. When you gather around a table some 30 years from now and share memories with your classmates, I pray that you discover the beauty that is born of many stories blended into one.”
Principal Sister Kathleen Anne Tait, O.P.
As family, friends, and members of the 365 graduating Spartans filled the Tinley Park Convention Center, the award-winning Marian Catholic High School Symphonic Band initiated the evening with the playing of “Pomp and Circumstance.” The Class of 2014 proceeded down the center aisle, led by class moderators Jennifer Clifford ’88 and Barbara Murzyn, along with the Marian Catholic faulty. Principal Sister Kathleen Anne, O. P., spoke to the Marian Catholic graduating class for the final time, as she will be taking on a new position with the Dominican Sisters of Springfield. Sister Kathleen Anne, O.P., shared her thoughts with the audience and graduates. “There’s a wonderful atmosphere of justified pride and poignant recognition of growth on the part of students, families, and staff. It truly is a tribute to the excellence of Marian Catholic and the students who are Scholars with a Soul. Each year I’m humbled in realizing parents have entrusted us with their sons and daughters to

“Each of you, assembled in caps and gowns of black and white, is called by the Spirit of God to make a contribution to world in which you live. I encourage you to play your part in life with Veritas, not a truth that is defined by fact, reality, or common understanding, but a truth that is defined within your own soul guiding you to follow the promptings of the Spirit of God. “Together, you the Class of 2014, have the talent and the wisdom and the beauty of soul to make a difference in the world around you. As athletes, academics, artists, and preachers of the Word, you are next generation leaders, ready to take your place in the story of life. As we celebrate with joy this evening of commencement, we thank every parent, grandparent, friend, family member, teacher, staff, coach, mentor, administrator, and benefactor who has helped you during your years at Marian Catholic. May you, the Class of 2014, go forth together incorporating your individual gifts into a beautiful symphony of life.”

GIVES BACK TO THE COMMUNITY services to needy residents in six area counties. Rebecca became involved with St. Clare during a service project in seventh grade. Since then, she has helped organize clothing, diaper, and food drives for expectant mothers and their newborns. She has Current Marian junior, Rebecca Hauser, also organized and stands next to some of her donated items. solicited gifts for baby showers which she hosts for expectant young women. Most of her campaigns happen around Christmas and in October for the month of Mary. Every Christmas, Rebecca is responsible for collecting gifts to be put under a Christmas tree located in St. James the Greater Church. Humbly, Hauser credits fellow parishioners for the success of her efforts, “They are so great, always willing to help, and God is so good.” Rebecca would like to keep up with her pro-life service as long as she can. She is involved in choir and track and field at Marian Catholic. After graduation, Rebecca plans to continue her passion for helping others by becoming a speech pathologist.
Rebecca Hauser, a Marian Catholic junior, says she has always been passionate about helping others. It was this passion that inspired her to become involved with pro-life causes. Rebecca’s most recent project with her church, St. James the Greater in Sauk Village, began last October. Her campaign involved collecting more than 4,000 diapers, wipes, and other newborn necessities to assist women who reside at St. Monica Home, on the grounds of Franciscan St. Margaret Health in Dyer, IN. St. Monica Home offers medical and emotional support in a healthy residential environment for women aged 12-21 who are expecting a child. Hauser explains, “It is admirable and important for these women to walk the walk and choose life for their babies. It’s a long journey for them and they can’t do it alone; they need help.” Rebecca and her mother Lorri delivered the items they collected to St. Monica on November 26, even though Rebecca was recovering from knee surgery. Liz Guzman-Arredondo, St. Monica manager, stated, “It is good to see someone so young taking on the pro-life cause. Kids today are unaware of the consequences of abortion, the long term effect it will have on the mother. If they realized this, they might rethink their decision.” Rebecca’s work is a powerful message to young girls and hopefully inspires the younger generation to become more active in the pro-life cause. This collection was not the first for Rebecca. She also collects and donates items for St. Clare Health Clinic’s Prenatal Assistance Program in Crown Point, IN. This program provides free medical and referral
SALGADO EARNS
This scholarship, funded by Bill and Melinda Gates, offers a good-through-graduation scholarship to 1,000 talented students. With over 52,000 applicants, Sofia has been selected as one of the recipients. She will take her talents to Northwestern University in the fall, where she eventually plans to enter the medical field. For the Gates Scholarship, the preliminary process was no easy task. Sofia was required to submit eight essays along with numerous letters of recommendation that recognized her achievements and community involvements. Recommendations from the Marian Catholic faculty and staff came high. “Sofia is literally the hardest working student I have ever had the pleasure to teach. She has a machinelike work ethic and a laser-like focus. On top of that, she is naturally brilliant,” stated newly appointed Marian Principal Mr. Steve Tortorello ’04. Sofia is extremely grateful for the honors she has received and owes a lot to her family. Her parents, grandmother, and godmother have instilled in her the importance of education. “It feels really good, knowing how much work I have put in. My goal is to be the first person in my family to receive a college education; not having any costs was a goal, but undreamed-of,” says, an emotional, Salgado. “I hope to serve as a role model for others.” The goal of The Gates Millennium Scholarship is to promote academic excellence while providing an opportunity for outstanding minority students to reach their highest potential. Without any doubt Sophia will represent herself, her family, and the Marian Catholic community to the highest level of her ability.
MILLENNIUM GATES SCHOLARSHIP Sofia Salgado ’14 will attend Northwestern University next year where she plans on studying Pre-Med.
Four years ago, when eighth grade graduation neared for Chicago Heights resident Sofia Salgado ’14, the thought of going to High School, let alone Marian Catholic High School, was a frightening prospect. Sofia, who first learned English in 3rd grade, came from a dominantly Hispanic background. Both of Sophia’s parents consider Spanish as their primary language, which made learning both at school and at home very difficult. However, Sofia hasn’t let any of her struggles hold her back from her goals. After enrolling at Marian Catholic in 2009, Sofia earned a 4.0 in every quarter, became an Illinois State Scholar, scored a 27 on her ACT, and has been offered over ten awards/scholarships. Of the awards and scholarships presented to Sofia, the Gates Millennium Scholarship is the most prestigious.

Marian Catholic and the wonderful students that walk the halls continue to show their dedication to giving back and helping others. There were 24 members of the upcoming senior class who dedicated a week of their summer vacation to extending volunteer assistance and proudly representing Marian Catholic. Most students are eager to spend the first few weeks of summer vacation simply relaxing with friends and family. However, this fine group was able to spend time with friends and “family” as they put themselves to work. Some of the duties consisted of cleaning, painting, and even siding a home. The labor was very demanding and strenuous, but nothing the Spartans couldn’t handle! The annual service trip began with an eight hour adventure south through Indianapolis and all the way to the Appalachian Mountains in Kentucky. Stops were made in Harlan and Wallins, KY, where students and volunteers gave their time to aid others throughout the week. While working, the Marian Catholic students often spent time interacting with families, listening to their stories, and learning the Appalachian culture and history. “It really is a fantastic time every year. It’s such a learning experience for each of those students and every year we are fortunate enough to assemble an amazing group of students,” said Sister Dorothy Marie Solak, O.P., Service Director at Marian Catholic. The Appalachia Service Trip is a yearly event that continues to draw a large number of Marian Catholic students and close Marian friends and family who generously volunteer their time and efforts.
2014 TAIL POWER CLASSIC After serving on the board of the Tail Power Classic for more than 12 years, Jim Dee ’80 is handing his reigns over to someone he happens to know well, his son Matt ’05. Jim, along with Tim Swanson ’86 and the late Ed Ziltz ’80, came together in the summer of 2002 to form what is now called the Tail Power Classic. The three members thought it would be a good way to get Marian alumni together and catch up with their former teammates. With a budget of zero dollars, members were able to put together a small golf outing and a dinner which soon flourished into much more and has since raised close to $150,000. With that money being raised, the Tail Power Classic has been able to donate to Marian Catholic High School and their athletic programs. As the new Tail Power Classic Chairman, Matt Dee is looking forward to taking this program rite in stride. “It’s definitely been an experience for me. I’ve been able to meet a number of alums and those involved with Marian Catholic High School who I didn’t know a year ago,” said Matt Dee. Reaching out to a number of football alumni, Matt knew his hands were going to be full. Although this is going to be a new experience for Matt, he has stated how thankful he is for the help that he has been given. Matt states, “The transition has been easy so far, my dad is there for anything I need and I owe thanks to many people who make this event happen.” The Tail Power Classic hosts an annual golf outing and a yearly Texas Hold ’Em tournament to raise money for Marian Athletics.

MARIAN CATHOLIC ENDOWMENT GOLF CLASSIC Marian Catholic is proud once again to host the Endowment Golf Classic at the famed Olympia Fields Country Club on Monday, Sept. 8, 2014. The 25th Anniversary event is open to alumni, friends, family, and business partners of Marian Catholic High School. Over the years, the success of the event has helped more than 400 students who have received scholarships from the Endowment Classic Scholarship Fund. These students have proven their deep commitment to do their best in the classrooms and beyond as Marian Catholic Scholars with a Soul! “Hosting the Marian Catholic Endowment Golf Classic at the famed Olympia Fields Country Club has always been a goal of the EGC Committee and we are pleased to offer this opportunity to our golfer guests again this year while keeping the same rate as years past,” said Greg Underwood, co-chair of the event with Mark Peifer ’81. Reservations will be taken on a first come, first served basis. The EGC Committee has worked to keep the event cost at Olympia Fields an exceptional value at $295 per golfer, the same rate as past years, and will include 18-holes of championship golf on the course of choice, lunch, course refreshments, dinner, open bar, and golfer participation gifts. Because of generous offers from two committee members who want to be sure the outing stays affordable for our young alumni, they will gift the cost difference for the first 30 young alums who reserve at the special rate of $195. This is the same rate as offered in past years to alumni ten years out of Marian. Golfer and guests are welcome and encouraged to make early reservations. For more information, contact Pat Trebe, Director of Annual Programs, at 708-756-9405 or ptrebe@marianchs.com.

MAXIMIZE YOUR GIFT Looking for a way to increase your gift without it costing you anything? Many companies offer a matching gift program as a way to encourage their employees and spouses to contribute to charitable organizations. Companies which offer a matching gift program will match the tax-deductible portion of your gift. So, if you buy pizzas for the basketball team, your gift will not be eligible. However, writing a check to Marian Catholic so the pizzas could be purchased would be eligible. This program is an excellent way to maximize the impact of your giving. Call the Marian Catholic Advancement Department at 708-756-9405 with any questions.
The Marian Catholic Advancement Department would like to make a correction to the spring edition of Marian Matters. Yvette Williams Woods was not listed as a 2014 Parent Volunteer. We would like to apologize and thank you for your time and efforts Yvette! 10

SPRING
ATHLETICS
The photo captions will read from left to right. Celeste Friel ’14, Lacrosse, finished her career off as the state of Illinois’ all-time single-season scorer with 109 goals. Matt Martinson ’15 captured third place in the IHSA High Jump Championships – Class 2A. Kyle Scheffers ’14 led the Spartans to another Sectional Championship while individually placing in the top 30 before losing to the eventual State Champion.
It’s often said that nobody is irreplaceable, but in the case of men’s tennis and women’s lacrosse at Marian Catholic, it will be a tall order. Aided by senior Celeste Friel, the new single-season Illinois state record holder for goals, the lacrosse squad compiled a 14-7 record in winning its second straight East Suburban Catholic Conference Championship. Meanwhile, the tennis team put together an impressive 22-4 meet record while capturing an IHSA Sectional Championship and tying for 22nd place at the IHSA State meet. “The varsity lineup was composed of a strong senior class that greatly improved from the year before,” praised veteran tennis coach Scott Bodnar, who also led the Spartans to a third-place finish in the ESCC. “This team showed great commitment and leadership and will rank as one of the best Tennis teams in Marian history.” An all-senior postseason lineup was highlighted by Kyle Scheffers, who put together a 38-3 campaign in earning a tie for 13th place at IHSA State in singles. He’ll take his tennis talents to play at Trinity University in Hartford, CT. Class valedictorian Patrick Murday chipped in 33 victories this year and qualified for state as well. Another state-qualifying duo, doubles team Paul Lamb ’14 and Sam Roche ’14 totaled 27 wins this spring, while the doubles team of Kevin Kwok ’14 and Chuck Helsel ’14 also eclipsed the 20-victory plateau. Along with staggering goal numbers for all-stater Celeste Friel (109 regular-season goals, 122 overall), the women’s lacrosse squad set the school record for wins at 14 and advanced to the sectional finals for the first time. Seven players made ESCC all-conference, including seniors Friel, Corina Gonzalez, Caitlin Henry, Jackie Surd, and Rachel Piacentini.
“Our success this season can be attributed to all the girls, but the captains in particular deserve a lot of credit,” Coach Brian Patterson ’97 said. “Celeste, Rachel, Caitlin, and Jackie, held this team together and made sure they stayed on track for our end goals. Captains and leaders like these are hard to find and even more difficult to replace. “We had a year filled with adversity from girls missing for one reason or another, to starting off 1-4, to players not being there who we thought were going to be an integral part of the team to, of course, injuries. But when other teams and other leaders would have packed it in, this team rose to the challenge and pulled off a great season.” Marian also experienced outstanding success with a fairly young men’s track and field squad, led by junior Matthew Martinson, who turned in an effort of 6-foot-7 in the high jump to capture third place at IHSA state. The Spartans qualified four entries overall for State, as Martinson added a 20th place effort in the triple jump. Senior Camren Howard also qualified in the 1,600-meter run (18th place) and senior LaQuayle Gray (21st place) made the state grade in the shot put.

Choir Gets the Call to Perform at Carnegie Hall The Marian Catholic Choral Program took much honor in their invitation to perform at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York City. On April 25, choral members traveled to New York City to take part in an extraordinary learning experience. The choral students made the most of their time spent in New York City. When not taking part in their musical endeavors, they made visits to The Statue of Liberty, 9/11 Memorial, Times Square, and many more sights to round out the experience. Students also had the enjoyment of taking part in workshops and rehearsals while in New York. The workshops were held at the Aaron Copeland School of Music at Queens College, often considered one of the most viable and distinguished university music departments in the nation. Along with the workshops, members of the choir were given the opportunity to rehearse with the director of the Los Angeles Master Chorale, Mr. Grant Gearshon.
Members of the Choral Program experience a chance of a lifetime and pose on stage at Carnegie Hall during their recent visit in April.
After some tourist stops and preparation for their event, the Marian Catholic Choral Program finally had their opportunity to perform on Saturday night. They took full advantage of their invitation to Carnegie Hall and absolutely lit up the stage with their amazing performance. Their overall enjoyment of performing at such a significant venue was an astonishing experience. “The students where very excited to get to Carnegie Hall! Being so busy with all our touring of the city and music workshops, the kids were just ready to perform on stage,” stated Marian Catholic Choral director Claire Aronson.
“Believe All Ogre Again” A fairytale story came alive as the Spartan Theater Department presented “Shrek the Musical” this spring. The musical ran April 11, 12, and 13 in the Croakin Auditorium at Marian Catholic High School. Based off the DreamWorks animated motion picture Shrek, the musical thrilled both children and adults. The magic of the performances drew large crowds and led to the biggest response to a Spring Musical that the Theater Department has experienced. Due to the complexity of the show, work began in the summer, nearly ten months before the curtains opened. Thanks to the work of Don Calgaro, the staff, and tech students, the performances went splendidly and looked phenomenal. This behind-the-scenes work helped support the cast in their endeavor to tell the story. The cast, comprised of students from every grade, sang and acted like stars to give the audience magical moments during every performance. Theater Director Mark Donaway said, “The student performances were outstanding because of their passion for the story. And love for the theatre.”
Cast members of “Shrek – The Musical” come together and take a picture for this year’s annual Spring Musical.
These passionate performances were accompanied by superb music thanks to Music Director Greg Bimm and the band students. This culmination of hard work by everyone involved led to the Spring Musical’s success and “Shrek the Musical” became a sold out event. “A packed theatre for the entire run of Shrek certainly tells the story,” said Donaway. This story was one of excellence and this success is sure to be a precursor of the great things the Theater Department will continue to do in the future.

ZARLENGO LIVES 1 MONTH WITHOUT SPENDING A DIME
May will be a month to remember for Kevin Zarlengo ’08. Kevin did not spend a dollar other than paying a few student loans and throwing some extra cash to his brother John for rent. The dollars he saved were donated after the 39-mile Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. The walk took place May 31 and June 1. Zarlengo worked to eat, doing chores at homes of friends, co-workers, family, and strangers in exchange for meals. “I’ll scrub toilets, baby-sit, wash your floor, wash your walls, and clean your garbage. There’s nothing I won’t do,” said Zarlengo, whose goal is to raise $1,800. Canaryville resident Kaitlyn Conley, whom Zarlengo has known since their days at Marian Catholic High School, will have him walking her two German shepherds for food. She said Zarlengo’s initiative to raise money and awareness for breast cancer is “brave and inspiring.” Kevin was able to donate $900 out of the money he didn’t spend and raise over $3,500 in total for the Avon Breast Cancer Walk. “Well, it was an amazing journey. 31 days of not spending any money,” said Zarlengo. Job well done, for a great cause, Kevin! Written by DNAinfochicago
