M A R I A N S T U D E N T S S PA R K L E I N A P, N AT I O N A L M E R I T Class of 2005 National Merit Finalists Kevin Marvinac ’05 and Robert Solorio ’05 are among the 95 Marian Catholic High School students recognized as Advanced Placement Scholars by the 2004 College Board. The College Board report that usually sparks September smiles didn’t make it to high school mail boxes across the country until November, but for the students of Marian Catholic High School it was worth the wait: a record number of Advanced Placement Scholars for a program that traditionally turns out the most A.P. recognized students in the South Suburbs. Last May, 305 Marian Catholic students (more than one-third of the 2004 graduating seniors and one-quarter of the juniors) took 630 college-level Advanced Placement exams. Nationally, about 13% of seniors take an A.P. exam; of these, about
17% (13.3% in Illinois) scored well enough on multiple exams to be recognized as A.P. Scholars. With 95 students recognized, 31% of Marian Catholic testers were so honored. With the Class of 2005 taking further courses and a growing enrollment in A.P. courses at the sophomore and junior levels, the trend is likely to continue. Like all “high stakes testing,” the A.P. exams are fodder for debate. The challenging college-level courses with a set national curriculum spark concerns about equity. With a large percentage of students invited to test (70% of them earning a score high enough for college credit), MCHS more than meets equity standards across race and gender. Recent research supports higher college achievement for those students who have experienced an A.P. curriculum.
Kevin Marvinac ’05 and Robert Solorio ’05, National Merit Finalists, lead a talented group of AP scholars from Marian.
Marian Catholic currently offers Advanced Placement in 16 different courses across the curriculum. continued on page 2
The Marian Symphonic Band performed as the "Showcase Band" in late January at the Illinois Music Educators’ Association convention in Peoria. The Symphonic Band, as last year’s Grand Champions, played in exhibition for “State of the Art” contest, clearing the way for the Concert Band to be named 2005 Grand Champions. The Cadet Band placed first in its class. They can be heard on April 21 at GSU. (see page 2)

THOMPSON EXPERIENCES INTERNATIONAL ‘PICTURE’ When Class of 2001 graduate Amy Thompson made Marquette University her college choice, it seemed like a great fit. She could continue a private school education at a place away from home, but certainly not too far from home. That was 11 countries and thousands and thousands of miles ago.
UPCOMING EVENTS MARIAN MADNESS NCAA FINAL FOUR GAMES Saturday, April 2, 2005 Doors Open at 4:30 p.m. MCHS East Gymnasium $25 Admission includes unlimited food, drinks and fun. If you have any questions please contact the Alumni Office.
“Get involved early at college, join the newspaper or look for some internships,” Thompson lists as some of her advice for the Class of 2005. “Do internships, even if it’s not for pay. It’s the experience that’s the pay; it will help you build a portfolio and help you improve in so many ways professionally.” Thompson is certainly someone who takes her own advice to heart. She recently accompanied a Marquette group on a service trip to Guatemala where the university contingent assisted locals in building a bridge. Thompson captured the trip as the official photographer, telling a story in pictures that will be documented on the Internet. The journalism major will get her degree this spring, but she’ll do it having spent much of her four years away from Marquette. After latching on to professional freelance photographer Dan Johnson as a mentor early in her college career, Thompson has had her eyes opened to dozens of photographic opportunities abroad. The Guatemala trip resulted in some fantastic photos, but also some dynamic memories. “It was really an eye-opening experience,” Thompson said. “I know it’s cliché, but you really learn to appreciate what you have. It’s amazing how we take clean hot water and plumbing for granted. But the people there are really willing to work and do anything you want them to do. We worked side-by-side. The language barrier was a huge issue. Spanish was not the first language for either of us, so there was a lot of pointing, sign language and poor conjugation “of verbs.” The service trip is an annual one for Marquette, and one that also afforded some free time. “I got out one day to photograph a religious procession,” Thompson explained. “You really got a sense of the old world like a stable and a manger. It was incredible.” Thompson gained an appreciation for what she does now during her days at Marian, as Photo Editor for the Megaphone school newspaper and in doing service. “Discovery-in-Service with Mr. (Jack) Heneghan was a great influence,” Thompson said. “It wasn’t working with different cultures, but making trips to the nursing homes helped me step out of that comfortable zone. It really had a great impact on me.” Through her pursuits, Thompson has fallen in love with travel and exploration of other cultures. Internships, paid or volunteer, and simple vacation travel have taken her overseas on several occasions. She “pictures” England as her all-time favorite. “I just love London–it’s in my blood and I definitely want to go back,” Thompson said with a gleam in her eye. “It’s so compacted with so many different foods and cultures. It’s completely bustling at all hours of the day.” Thompson looks forward to eventually lending her photographic talents to the professional world. However, she’s in no hurry to stop what she’s doing now. Post-graduation will likely feature six months in Canada, six months in England, then a respite before grad school. “I want to spend more time abroad and eventually go to grad school,” she explained. “I definitely want to work for a newspaper, but I also want to continue to travel, do some freelance work and get to see the different cultures.” With Amy’s photographic talents, many people may have the opportunity to see different lands and different cultures. Amy Thompson ’01 (above) has visited 11 countries through Marquette University, with photography opportunities including a recent visit to Guatemala (left).

A L U M S F O RT I F Y C OA C H I N G S TA F F The court or the field is their classroom. While students enroll at Marian Catholic for the excellence in education, a high percentage also gain valuable life experiences through fine arts, activities and sports. In athletics, lesson plans are practice plans, lecture is x’s and o’s, and tests are games and contests. Teachers give their best to Marian scholars often because of advanced degrees and continuing education. Coaches give their best to Marian athletes often because of vast competition or coaching experience. At Marian, however, students benefit from many mentors through the added element of giving back, and an extra sense of pride through working at their alma mater. Nearly 25 Marian alums currently work full-time on staff, while close to 20 Marian graduates return to work on the coaching staff each year. “As an alum coaching, it always adds a little extra when in the beginning of the year you are able to tell young men or women that you have walked in their shoes and sat in the same seats they are,” explained Tony Waznonis ’98, who has added his talent to the softball and men’s and women’s basketball programs. “It allows you to be more understanding at times of the pressures of Marian, but at the same time allows you to push students to want to achieve greater things because you have done it before and know what it takes.” One of seven Marian Catholic alums currently coaching more than one sport season at Marian, Waznonis has been a big part of the Spartans recipe for success. In his initial year in 2004, he served on a women’s basketball staff that finished fourth in the state and a softball staff that reached the Sweet 16. This year, his talents are extended to a men’s basketball program that’s experiencing improvement on all levels. For Waznonis, knowing and being part of Marian history provided an additional teaching and motivational tool. “You can talk about some of the great players of the past you knew or played with during your time at Marian,” Waznonis explained. “When you recall the 2004 seasons for softball (Sweet 16), and women’s basketball (4th in state), you realize that history is being written now. Those successes add an extra sense of motivation for the kids. You can see the pride in their eyes.” Alumni coaches at Marian range from some just out of college to those with many years of coaching experience like Athletic Director, Dave Mattio ’66.
“It has been and always will be a privilege to be involved at Marian Catholic High School,” explained Mattio, who serves as Athletic Director and head football coach. “The atmosphere created by the energy of our student body is and always will be a trademark of this institution. It is a school whose student ownership has pushed it to levels well beyond the normal expectations of the high school experience. It is an experience that is best described by the workings of our student body, whether in the classroom, in a competitive extracurricular situation, or in a social setting. Marian Catholic High School truly cares.” Coaches like Mattio (Northern Illinois) and current women’s basketball coach Shannon Reidy ’90 (Lake Forest) also add expertise and experience as athletes on the college level. For some Marian alumni, the coaching knowledge has been advanced to the college level. Stefanie (Guillen) McAllister ’85 served as softball head coach at both Marian and Bradley University, while others taking their talents to the college coaching level include: Jim Poynton ’85 (football at Iowa, Northern Illinois); John Binkowski ’86 (football at Western Illinois, Northern Illinois); Mike Feminis ’86 (football at St. Francis, St. Xavier); Jim Seput ’86 (football at St. Francis); Ruth Kmak ’88 (softball at Loyola, University of Chicago); Kathryn Gleason ’92 (softball at Massachusetts, Purdue, Michigan State). For someone like Reidy, it’s no surprise that so many coaches return to Marian Catholic. “There is a bit more personal accountability, out of respect for the Dominican Sisters, faculty and organization I represent, when it comes to working for a school from which my three sisters and I graduated,” explained Reidy, who has guided Marian to more than 150 victories in just seven years at the helm. “There happens to also be more emotional and personal satisfaction being back at Marian which, after all, contributed to the person I am today. “This has to be one of the best schools to coach for if you believe in the standards here and the opportunities for student-athletes. We are a premier high school that continues to be recognized as one of the top Catholic academic high schools in the Midwest. I see so many well-rounded opportunities for students here in academic, spiritual, social and competitive atmospheres. It’s enriching and fun to work here.”

ADVISORY BOARD PROFILE
When we think about teens and the Cook County Sheriff ’s Office, we usually think about kids in trouble. In this case, the Sheriff ’s Office wanted to recognize teens for doing good things, so they created the Sheriff ’s Youth Service Medal of Honor Award. This award is given annually to students who contribute at least 100 hours of service to their communities and who reside in Cook County. These service hours may be given to schools, churches, and other charitable organizations within the community. Senior student Sarah Jo Ritchie, has done just that. She is a member of the Marian Catholic High School Band and Service Club. Only occasionally has Ritchie had to miss helping to prepare a meal for the homeless. She has visited the elderly in nursing homes and helped at Critter Crossings, a refuge for wild animals. Last summer, Ritchie spent a week in Appalachia helping to roof a home for an elderly family. Ritchie is also a member of the national service organization known as Junior Civitan, and helps host Open House and Shadow and Step-Up Days as a three year member of the Recruitment Corps.

Kristin Richardson, a senior, is not only an active member of the Service Club, but was elected its President this year. Richardson is a wonderful role model, encouraging others to give service as she does. This past fall, she coordinated the effort to collect stuffed animals and toys for the Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest. Richardson is Vice-President of her senior class and is active in student government. Her hours of service are extended by her membership in the Recruitment Corps. A National Merit Semi-Finalist, Richardson challenges herself with Advanced Placement courses.
“To keep Marian Catholic as the premier Catholic college-prep high school in the area and to expand its reputation based on the academic achievements of the students. Our student’s success depends on many factors, the first and most important being the support and commitment of their families to their education. A special thank you to all of the Dominican Sisters for their generosity throughout the years.”
Katy Payne has been active in Service Club helping to feed the homeless. She has also made several trips to Appalachia to help the poor, representing both Marian Catholic and her parish youth group. As a freshman, Payne participated in Snowball. So certain of the worthiness of the program, she continued to participate by becoming a Snowball leader and teen director this year. This year marks Payne ’s third year as a Recruitment Corps member giving many hours of service, while also participating in choir and forensics. Kevin Marvinac ’05 was the only student from his elementary school to come to Marian. It is here that Marvinac, with his strong sense of responsibility, has taken advantage of the many opportunities to become involved. He has become a leader in service and student government, serving as a Student Council member and, now, as Vice-President of his senior class. This is the third year Marvinac has been a member of the Recruitment Corps. He too traveled to Appalachia last year to assist the poor. Marvinac writes for the school newspaper and plays varsity tennis. Marvinac is an outstanding student and was named class of 2005 National Merit finalist. Some of Marian’s past recipients of the Youth Service Medal of Honor are Steve Tortorello ’04, currently studying at Notre Dame, Sean Becker ’04, a student studying at Purdue University-Calumet, Justin Kordys ’04 at Tulane University, and Kyle Chapman, a senior student at Marian Catholic who received the award as a junior. What do all of these students have in common? They all have strong moral values, compassion, integrity and the knowledge that giving of themselves helps others live a better life. They share a wide variety of interests and talents they are willing to share. These young men and women are leaders who make excellent role models. Their actions influence others to move beyond themselves, becoming involved in a world that so desperately needs their gifts, their love and their goodness. 5
MARIAN MADNESS III: TWICE THE FINAL FOUR FUN “The clock ticks down to less than a minute in a tie game in the first NCAA National semi-final and the University of Illinois will go to the foul line with a one-and-bonus. . .” Maybe that’s wishful thinking at this point. However, Marian Madness fans can look forward to the bonus this year. The third annual Marian Madness event will move from Monday’s NCAA Men’s Championship game to Saturday’s national semi-finals, giving fans twice the games and twice the time to renew friendships and enjoy good food, drink and NCAA basketball on life-size screens. “Marian Madness is a great event and has really taken off and created its own life after only two years,” explained co-chair Nancy (Lynch) Virene ’81. “We saw quite an attendance increase from year one to year two, and expect to see more faces this year being on a Saturday.”
Chris Hanson ’81, Paul Plomin ’81, Tom Klupchak ’81, Jim Donahue ’81, Jim Beese ’81, Rusty Krydynski ’81 and Colleen O’Neil Ranieri ’83 renew friendships at the second Marian Madness Final Four party.
While there may be a change in value and more ease in securing a babysitter this year, Marian Madness will feature more of the same programs that made the first two years memorable events.
Along with unlimited food and drink for the $25 admission, the games will be projected to large screens on the huge walls of Marian’s East Gym. The fun will also include games of chance. Proceeds from the event and several silent auction opportunities will benefit the Athletic Initiative at Marian (AIM). Marian Madness (co-sponsored by the Athletic Department, Athletic Boosters, and the Marian Alumni Association) doors will open at 4:30 p.m. and extend through the second national semi-final. “It’s a perfect opportunity to gather with friends and family at a fun, local event while supporting Marian, and who doesn’t watch the Final Four anyway?” Virene said. “The fact that it is on a Saturday, I think, will be a big draw this year, and the extended time frame of two games will help to accommodate people’s Saturday schedules. It offers a bunch of fun all at one event!”
Nancy Lynch Virene ’81 and Tim Swanson ’86 celebrate a job well done at Marian Madness in 2004.
“It’s a night of great basketball, homemade food and games within the games,” said Ray Murphy, perhaps Marian Madness’ biggest supporter in terms of donations and involvement. “At the same time, you’re supporting one of the best academic-athletic schools around. “It’s also a night of renewing old friendships, with the hope of meeting several new and old friends from Marian Catholic.”

AWA R D E E K E R N R E S C U E S M O R E T H A N P H O N E S Through his work with AT&T’s Network Disaster Recovery unit, John Kern ’75 is accustomed to helping keep international communications safe. While assigned in Iraq, Kern not only helped keep communications safe, but he also saved lives. His efforts earned him one of AT&T’s most prestigious honors, the Theodore N. Vail Award. While in a vehicular convoy traveling between Kuwait and Baghdad, Kern witnessed the lead vehicle leave the road and crash. Risking his own life by vacating his vehicle, Kern, two other AT&T employees and a U.S. Army Warrant Officer with medical experience, rushed to assistance and helped save the lives of two injured Military Police.
“I have felt the pride and determination of the City of New York demonstrated through thousands of people standing in the streets day and night – rain and shine – cheering and shouting encouragement as rescue and recovery workers traveled in and out of the restricted zone around the WTC. “I have seen the compassion and strength of a retired FDNY father who lost his FDNY son to the attack, consoling other victim’s family members. I felt the absolute determination of the brother of a missing FDNY fulfilling his promise to his mother to bring his brother home, no matter what.
Kern’s experiences have led him to develop a higher level of pride in the United States. “I have seen first-hand our military men and women risking their lives to protect the freedom that all of us enjoy every day,” explained Kern, who volunteered for the Iraq assignment. “Men and women who aren’t much older than I was during my days at Marian Catholic are keeping us safe each and every day all around the world.”
“All of those memories have strengthened my love of this country and the respect of the spirit of my fellow citizens.” The intensity is not as high for all of Kern’s work with AT&T, but the sense of pride and satisfaction is maintained in everything he does. “The camaraderie, spirit and skills of the team that I lead are the absolute best parts of my job,” he said. “I have the opportunity to work with people who will do whatever it takes to accomplish the task at hand without complaint, but with the perfect balance of fun and focus.
Kern gained his respect for pride and service during his formative years. “I think the discipline, the concept of service to others, and a pride of accomplishment were all important lessons that I received at MCHS,” said Kern, who began is career at AT&T right out of high school. “My education provided a foundation that has served me very well throughout my personal and professional life.” The Vail Award, established in 1920, recognizes AT&T employees and retirees who perform heroic deeds and demonstrate good judgment and resourcefulness. “The remarkable bravery that John exhibited in Iraq is singularly distinctive and yet typical of his character,” said Robin Bienfait, Global Networking Technology Services-Network Operations VicePresident. “His determination and outstanding performance have consistently contributed to AT&T’s success.”
John Kern ’75 (right) assists in a life-saving mission in Iraq.
“When we are deployed for humanitarian missions, I am very proud that we are able to help people whose homes have been destroyed, but whose spirit could not be. Being able to help a disaster victim make a telephone call out of a disaster area to let their family know they are safe is more rewarding than I could ever explain.”
It was his experiences in New York City after Sept. 11 that prompted Kern to volunteer for AT&T’s network in Iraq. “I have had the opportunity to experience the absolute best of our country in some of the absolute worst of times,” Kern said. “I have seen NYPD, FDNY, and Port Authority personnel digging through the rubble of the twin towers looking for their buddies at great personal risk, scrambling off the pile when horns warned of rubble collapse.
In New York, Iraq and wherever the Disaster Recovery unit is called to be, people are thankful John Kern is one of those people who “will do whatever it takes.”

The younger versions of these characters are “shadowed” by Morgan Williams ’06 and Stephanie Erazo ’06. The talented cast is rounded out by a superior ensemble, including Vanessa Brignol ’08, Cameron Williams ’06, Josh Jackson ’07, Tim Blewitt ’08, Sam Sullivan ’08, Lauren Eldridge ’06 and Amber Hill ’06. Alyssa Humbles ’06 has assisted with audio and costumes. A bit of extra drama was added at the State Finals in Carbondale as the first judging had the PIR tied for First Place. “The Marian Catholic cast has won top ranks because of the moving story, attention to character detail, the joyous laughter, and the overall maturity of the presentation,” explained Sweeney, who has rejuvenated the Marian Forensics program. “The production is always successful because of the heartfelt understanding of the students.”
Marian senior Ashley Hluska goes to the hoop during a Marian women's basketball victory. The Spartans won two holiday tournament titles, shared the ESCC crown and advanced to their fifth straight IHSA sectional final with a 28-2 record.
Morgan Williams ’06 & Amber Hill ’06 practice an act that earned Marian’s Performance in the Round second place at the IHSA State Tournament on Feb. 19.
Michelle Pritchett ’07 earned a second place in Radio Speaking, while Marian also gained state qualifiers with a pair of third place finishers: Elaine Wilson ’05 in Special Occasion Speaking with “I love to go a’wandering” and Alex Stoterau ’07 and Craig Dettmann ’07 in Humorous Duet Acting with “Some things you need to know before the world ends.”
The win allowed the Spartans to finish 8-1 in league play and earn a tie for the crown with Fenwick, a foe Marian defeated in a classic 51-49 overtime decision on Feb. 1. Led by senior captains Brea Banks, Keisha Collins, Ashley Hluska, Skye Johnson and Casey Taylor, Marian also won the Maine West Tipoff Classic and a fourth straight Hillcrest Holiday Classic.
Led by a very talented Performance-in-theRound group that placed second in the Oak Lawn IHSA Speech Sectional, Marian sent a record four Forensics entries to the IHSA State Tournament on Feb. 18-19 at Carbondale High School. Overall, Marian Catholic advanced a pair of second place sectional finishers and two third place finishers.
The Spartan women’s basketball program made sure it “had its say” in the state’s strongest league, the East Suburban Catholic Conference. With all of Chicago watching live Feb. 12 on WWTW-Channel 11, Marian secured a tie for its second ESCC title in four years with a 43-35 victory at Mundelein Carmel.
Johnson, Taylor and Hluska earned all-conference in the ESCC, a league that consistently had six teams ranked in the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times Top 25. The Class of 2005 entered the postseason with a staggering three-year mark of 81-14.
“The cast members are truly exceptional in the dedication they bring to the roles and play’s project,” Forensics Coach Tom Sweeney said of his Performance in the Round dozen. “Theresa Wilson and I are co-directing and we find each rehearsal exciting.” Marian’s Performance-in-the-Round, which captured second in the state in 2003, earned second place at the state contest again with its theme: “Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters’ First 100 Years.” The leads are Samika Ross ’07 and Samantha Thompson ’08, who capture the voice, soul and attitude of two special 103 and 104 year old women.
The Spartans took a 25-2 overall record into post-season play, including 21 victories in their last 22 games. Adding to “title town” in Chicago Heights, the Marian sophomores won the outright ESCC title and the freshmen also shared the ESCC crown. Through regular season play, the Marian women’s basketball program owned a combined 88-6 mark.
Tim Blewitt ’08, Vanessa Brignol ’08, & Sam Sullivan ’08 helped Marian’s Performance in the Round earn second in state at the IHSA State Tournament for the second time in three years.

PHONATHON CALLEES RESPOND FOR $65,000+ Annual Fund Phonathon Coordinator Peg Massucci can’t say thank you enough. Working the Phonathon since 1996 and coordinating the Phonathon for the eighth year, Massucci said, “It is unbelievable how very fortunate Marian Catholic is to have such great support. To those who gift us with self and time, the co-chairs, the committee, the parent, alumni parent and student phonathoners, to those who gift us with treasure, to our Advancement Team, I cannot say thank you enough on behalf of MCHS.” Massucci says she has seen many phonathoners returning year after year to be callers, even long after their students have graduated. “I have the pleasure of still working with people I met in the library eight years ago,” Massucci added. “Two of our four co-chairs, Joe and Sue Beaudry ’67 ’67, were actually with the Phonathon when I was a new recruit in 1996.” Joe and Sue are now co-chairing the event along with current MCHS parent Sue Dawson and alumni parent Nancy Hathhorn.
Marian students Melanie Moore, Keisha Collins and Katy Clark encourage “answering the call” for the 2005 Phonathon.
Students also responded in a remarkable way, having the largest number of student callers ever. The students were challenged by the parents who garnered a record $44,000 in pledges received from alumni parents and current parents over one afternoon and three evenings of calling. The students also received a record number of pledges from MCHS alum over three evenings of calling, totaling $65,514. “The MCHS constituency continues its tradition of ‘answering the call’ when the call is one for supporting excellence in academics, faith, athletics and the arts,” Massucci said. “The event is one of fund-raising, but it seems we ‘ring the bell’ more often as one of friend-raising.” A Mass was offered in the Chapel during February for the many personal intentions and needs that emerged during the Phonathon conversations. The ’05 Phonathon Committee members did such a wonderful job of recruiting parent callers, and parents did such a wonderful job of volunteering a few hours of their time, that Massucci was able to call those who had offered to come two and three nights to tell them that they only need come one night, if at all! The Committee this year included:
When Irish eyes are smiling: Queen of the Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade, MCHS graduate Bridget McLaughlin ’95.
