Athletic Director, Dave Mattio ’66,

STEPS DOWN AS HEAD FOOTBALL COACH

Sister Kathleen Anne Tait, O.P. presents a commendation for years of service from the Illinois House of Representatives to Dave Mattio ’66 at halftime of the December 7 basketball game. Mattio was joined by his wife, Jody, and football alumni who came to surprise their coach with a Disney World trip and special celebration in the Leadership Center.

Dave Mattio ’66, the 19th winningest coach in IHSA history with a 252-241 (.644) record, has spent the majority of his life on Marian Catholic’s campus. A 1966 graduate of Marian Catholic, the Northern Illinois University graduate returned to Marian Catholic on the football staff in 1971 and assumed the reins of the program in 1976. “It goes without saying that spending 42 years doing something you really enjoy and appreciate is not the norm for today’s society,” Mattio said. “It has always been my belief that those who represent Marian Catholic have been ‘woven from a special cloth.’ My thanks go out to those great student-athletes who have so positively represented this high school in the great sport of football. Your impact on Marian Catholic High School will never be underestimated and your influence on my life will always be treasured. “None of the past 42 years would have been possible without the fine support group of family and friends. Special thanks to my parents whose sacrifices taught me many of life’s lessons. Most importantly, a very heartfelt ‘thank you’ is extended to my beautiful wife and my best friend. Thanks, Jody, for allowing me to be a ‘kid chasing dreams’ for the last 42 years,” Mattio concluded. Mattio’s teams have made 20 IHSA playoff appearances, capped off by the 1993 Class 4A state championship and made another appearance in the 5A title game in 1999. His squad also captured the 2000 Chicagoland Prep Bowl and made one other Prep Bowl titlegame appearance. The Spartans have compiled seasons of .500 or better in 31 of the 37 campaigns, including 22 in a row. Under Mattio’s leadership, Marian has won seven conference championships in the Illini-8, East Suburban Catholic, and Catholic Metropolitan Blue. His squads have made four overall IHSA state semifinal appearances, played in six Chicagoland Prep Bowls, produced six seasons of 10 wins or more, and turned out numerous All-State players and media Players of the Year.

Whether carrying the title of alumni, parent, educator, or volunteer, all six individuals to be inducted into the Nineteenth Annual Hall of Fame on Thursday, February 7, at Olympia Fields Country Club have shown a remarkable commitment to molding students academically and spiritually. Their commitment to Teaching Scholars with a Soul will continue to have a strong influence upon current and future Marian Catholic students for years to come.

Three who will be recognized are Marian Catholic alumni who continue to use the skills originally cultivated on the Chicago Heights campus. Three others, of whom two are Dominican Sisters of Springfield, are educators with impeccable records for what they do in and beyond the classroom. All of these inductees are tremendous models of leadership in their own right.

JERRY VERDE ’95 IS MARIAN CATHOLIC’S SEVENTH FOOTBALL COACH Marian Catholic graduate Jerry Verde has been named to lead the Spartans as their seventh coach in history. The 1995 Marian alum also led the Spartans to the IHSA Class 4A state title as a linebacker in 1993 (a 13-6 victory over Geneseo Darnall). “I am excited to come back to Marian and begin working on the football program,” Verde explained. “Marian Catholic has always been a special place for me. It’s a great honor being named head football coach of the Spartans, after Dave Mattio’s retirement from the program.”

ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR Vincent J. Krydynski, III ’81

Vincent Krydynski, III ’81, Alumnus of the Year, has taken on many important roles in the school community since his graduation in 1981, including that of alumni parent of Hannah ’10. Vincent “Rusty” Krydynski served on the Marian Catholic Advisory Board and continued his commitment when it transitioned to a Board of Directors. Through the years, he has been actively involved with the Marian Catholic Alumni Association serving as an executive officer, and has served prominently on several committees that have helped shape Marian Catholic for the future. “Working with Vince as a Director of the Board was a privilege and a joy,” explained Marian Catholic President Sister Judine Hilbing, O.P. “His insight and vision were always directed toward the good of the total school community. Vince has been very active in the Marian Catholic Alumni Association and continually reaches out to his colleagues to encourage membership and participation. As an officer of the association, he was instrumental in beginning the tradition of inducting the graduating class into the Alumni Association at the annual Pinning Mass. Vince is truly a faithful alumnus and committed alumni parent.” The humble Krydynski is quick to point out his resume may not be as exciting as some Marian past Hall of Fame members. “Having served on the Hall of Fame selection committee for a couple years, I am aware of the accomplishments our alums are making nationally and internationally,” Krydynski said. “I am a local guy with no desire to make a splash in the national or international pool. What I am doing is not much different than what most of the other MCHS alums are doing.” Actually, Krydynski conveys the epitome of a model Marian Catholic product. While the school is proud of those making national fame, alumni who stay close to home and continue to be an example by

becoming involved can sometimes have the most tangible impact on Marian’s past, present, and future. “Marian Catholic challenged me to look to the needs of others and how I can serve,” explained Krydynski. “I think students today should try new experiences and test personal boundaries and comfort levels. Work for what is important. It is good to fail. By failing you know what will not work for you. Furthermore, it is the climb back up which will makes you stronger.” Krydynski certainly has not failed in his service to Marian Catholic. In fact, he’s helped the school climb through changing times to remain among the elite in the Chicagoland area. A graduate of St. Mary’s University (MN) and John Marshall Law School, Krydynski is a partner in The Law Office of Krydynski & Frigo, LLC. He is a very active member of St. Michael Catholic School and Parish in Orland Park, as well as a member of the Knights of Columbus. He serves as a Field Advocate for the Marriage Tribunal of the Archdiocese of Chicago and serves as a member of the Orland Park and Tinley Park Chambers of Commerce and of the Business Networking International. While “Rusty” credits his wife Loretta for much of his motivation, he tracks his commitment and integrity back to his parents, Mary Ellen and Vince Jr., who through their sacrifice and commitment to Catholic education allowed him to develop and mature at Marian Catholic. “Marian was the beginning of my life-journey,” he said. “It was my opportunity to begin finding out more about who I was through new friendships, new freedoms, new responsibilities, and new experiences while under the ever watchful eyes of the Dominican Sisters.” Today, Krydynski continues to use his time and love for Marian Catholic to ensure that current Marian Catholic students experience those same benefits.

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR John Finnin ’78

When John Finnin ’78 started at Marian Catholic, basketball was his love. He became a prominent figure in basketball and baseball but it soon became apparent that it was in golf that he would stand out and make his mark. When his father Gary introduced him to golf at age 15, Finnin’s gifts were discovered. That eventually led to four years on the golf team at the University of Miami-Florida where he perfected his craft. Today, he is one of the finest golfers Illinois has produced. Finnin has also excelled as a successful business owner and as alumni parent to daughter Valerie ’10. “John Finnin represented many of the things that high school athletics was about,” explained Marian Catholic Athletic Director Dave Mattio ’66. “His participation in three sports during his time at Marian Catholic provided a ‘road map’ of participation for his peers. A great golfer and a member of the men’s basketball and baseball squads, John is a wonderful example of one who learned to manage time in preparing for life as an adult. Anyone who knows John recognizes that he still carries those attributes in all that he and his family do.” His love for the game of golf has carried him to great heights, and he still enjoys the competitive aspect today. Earlier this year, Finnin was co-medalist at the Riverside Golf Club sectional, earning a spot in the U.S. Senior Open.

Finnin has seen golf success in all parts of Illinois and the country, winning more than 25 tournaments. Finnin played in two U.S. Amateurs, three U.S. Mid-Amateurs, three U.S. Amateur Public Links, and two USGA Men’s Team State Championships representing Illinois. He won the Illinois State Public Links Championship in 1997, the Azalea Amateur in 1983, and competed in the Western Open in 1985. Finnin competed on 13 Radix Cup teams (top 12 Illinois pros vs. amateurs tourney). Juggling a desire to remain competitive in golf while being a dutiful family man and successful business owner is no easy task for the owner of Absolute Best Cleaning Services, his company that’s an offspring of a business his father started. Finnin and wife Leslie faithfully follow the activities of children Valerie, 20, Johnny, 18, and Candace, 15, while managing the many facets of life. Finnin learned to multi-task at Marian as a student-athlete. “I was a three-sport athlete all four years, which kept me very busy,” Finnin explained. “Academically, being in the top percent of schools taught you how to study hard, how to listen, and how to prepare yourself. At Marian, you will fall down, but you learn to get up and run quickly. Also important was the continuation of spiritual growth from my mother and father raising us Catholic and always going to church. “It was truly a great experience, especially having the opportunity to develop strong friendships. Socially, playing in a variety of sports and meeting so many different people, we now have a big core of friends from various parts of the country,” Finnin said. 2

FINE ARTS DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVEMENT Bobby Lambert

Marian Catholic is synonymous with a successful marching band program on a national level. Since his arrival at Marian Catholic in 2001, Bobby Lambert has had a tremendous influence on that success as the right-hand man to Marian Hall of Famer and Band Director, Greg Bimm. “I cannot fit enough powerful adjectives into this short space to describe Bobby Lambert,” praised Bimm. “Talented, caring, brilliant, and dedicated just break the surface. Bobby has been an essential and central key to our success during his time at Marian. Not a day passes that I am not grateful that he is with me and the band at Marian.” Although Lambert only knew one person who was Catholic in his hometown of Cherokee, NC, his experience at Marian Catholic has followed that of many incoming freshmen who experience the new perspectives of Catholic Education. For the graduate of Western Carolina (Magna Cum Laude) and University of Massachusetts, Lambert found his way to Marian Catholic as his first full-time job. “I had never stepped foot into a private school, much less a Catholic private school,” explained Lambert, the father of Maria and Olivia with wife, Alysia. “I was not sure what to expect. I also had designs of staying here for only three to five years. For most assistant directors, that is more than enough time before the desire of having one’s own program begins to present itself. “I am very thankful. Everyone is caring and shows the true nature of Dominican spirit. I continue to grow and be fulfilled with the best colleagues one could ever imagine. Marian has been a true paradigm shift in my thinking and I couldn’t be happier,” he said.

Along with assisting with a band that has won 33 consecutive Illinois State titles in class and qualified for the Bands of America Grand National finals in every year he’s been present, Lambert has stayed at Marian Catholic because he has carved his own unique niche at the school as well as in his career. Lambert designed the framework for Marian Catholic’s copyrighted Leadership Program and led a group which helped develop the curriculum for the program. Lambert serves as the first director for the program that began in 2005 and still serves as a lead teacher for all lesson planning and organization. From that experience, he began his own business of leadership and program design for both music programs and full school organizations called “Custom Consultation.” Each summer, Lambert heads back to his alma mater where he is the head instructor for the WCU Summer Symposium Drum Major Camp and is a sought-after guest speaker and consultant for other high schools and universities. Lambert devotes tireless hours to the Marian Catholic Band, which has previously been selected to perform at the Presidential Inauguration and twice at Disney World in Orlando. In addition, the band has performed in Hawaii and marched in the Rose Bowl Parade and Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The band will march again in Macy’s Parade in 2013. Lambert’s students would be wise to follow their instructor’s journey to success. “I have been fortunate to have many people who have influenced my path,” Lambert said. “Look to the best people you know and find out as much about them as possible. Emulate their actions and associate with them often. When we surround ourselves with the best people, we will have the best chance for growth and success.”

SPIRIT OF MARIAN

Deacon Edward Szymanski ’78 Perhaps he feels it is the payback for the education he earned at Marian Catholic or perhaps it is just a desire to keep returning to a place he loves. Whatever the reason, Edward Szymanski ’78 continues to give his time and talent to Marian Catholic, ensuring that today’s students will receive the important faith development and learning experience that he came to know while at Marian. A deacon at his parish, Church of St. Mary in Park Forest, Szymanski has been a regular on the service trips to Appalachia, Kentucky, run by Sister Dorothy Marie Solak, O.P. In order to make this commitment, Szymanski will spend two weeks away from his job as owner/engineer at Do-Rite Die & Engineering in South Chicago Heights, IL. On the trip, he displays tremendous patience when teaching inexperienced student workers and willingly takes on the dirtiest and most difficult jobs himself. Szymanski has also become a fixture in Snowball retreats at Marian Catholic, helping with training, group discussions, and cabin supervision. “Ed freely gives up a day or more to help with the students and with the organization,” said Marian Catholic Snowball Director Linda Savick. “He is tireless in these two (Appalachia and Snowball) endeavors for Marian and for the Marian students. He gives back unconditionally and unselfishly. He certainly is a true example of the Spirit of Marian and the Dominican tradition of unselfish service to others.” 3

His intense desire to work with and help students comes from outstanding influences while a student at Marian Catholic. “Marian influenced me so much that we sent our children, Edward ’03, Christopher ’04, and Elizabeth ’07 there and I continue to be active in some of the organizations within the school community,” the University of Illinois graduate said. “I know so many of the teachers impacted my life, but I think two stood out more than the others, Sister Mary Blaise Galloway and Sister Rosalima Blough. “Sister Mary Blaise taught me that nothing comes easy in life, even our faith. If it is something important to you, you will have to work and make sacrifices for it. Sister Rosalima taught that God loves us no matter what, but that He wants us to be the best persons we can be. Both taught us that our education and careers were important, but that God, family, and faith should have the prime spots in our heart,” he said. Tireless in these two endeavors for Marian Catholic, Szymanski gives back unconditionally and unselfishly but with a purpose. “I want students to understand the most important things in our lives are our faith in God and our relationships with our family and friends,” said Szymanski. “If we live that way, we will realize and appreciate the talents God has given us and allow us to use them to the best of our ability.”

SPIRIT OF MARIAN

Sister Marion Sitkiewitz, O.P. If there’s an important task or an odd job at Marian Catholic High School, call on Sister Marion Sitkiewitz, O.P., and the job will get done! For the past nine years, she is at home in every department and office. While stuffing envelopes, folding programs, or preparing a mailing, of which all have fallen into her job description, Sister Marion has molded her vocation into one with extended creativity and an impact on hundreds of students, families, and co-workers. One role she has taken on is becoming the biggest cheerleader of the Fine Arts Department and the Marian Catholic Speech Team, one of the best Speech programs in the state. Sitkiewitz said, “The students and coaches do all the work and I am delighted to carry the trophy to the convent.” Since Marian Catholic celebrated its 50th anniversary, Sister Marion has been preserving the school’s history as she archives school photos, 52 years of Megaphone newspapers, and documents. In 1951, soon after her first vows, then Sister Peter Claver, O.P. taught at St. Mary’s Grade School in East St. Louis. In the 1970’s, she returned to her baptismal name, Marion, and in the late 1990’s returned to East St. Louis as librarian at Sister Thea Bowman Catholic Grade School. With an inquisitive mind and active imagination, Sister Marion has made a difference while at Marian Catholic High School. If not toiling with another task, she’ll create t-shirts or signs with

slogans on them, which she wears or carries to give students friendly reminders of significant events. Sister Marion assists with the Associate Program of the Dominican Sisters of Springfield of Illinois by coordinating the group from the South Suburbs. The Dominican Associate Program was formed in 1990 as a means for lay people to participate in the congregation’s ministry. Dominican Associates are men and women who embrace the Dominican traditions of prayer, study, common life, and service. They are called to share the Gospel with others and “preach with their lives.” They participate in various spiritual, social, and ministerial experiences as well as congregational events. Perhaps it was no mistake that Sister Marion wound up at Marian Catholic. Her 8th grade teacher was Sister Mary Mannes, the first principal of Marian. When assigned to St. Victor Parish in Calumet City, Sister Marion made the Marian Convent her home. She was always very close to Notre Dame High School classmate, the now deceased Sister Margaret Rose Aultz, O.P., another former faculty member at Marian. “I believe the Dominican Spirit I found in the Sisters at Our Lady of Grace Grade School in Chicago, shaped my prayer life,” Sister Marion said. “I found their Dominican community life attractive. I believe that Sister Margaret Rose was important to my vocation. Her decision to enter the order gave me the courage and information I needed to follow my Dominican dream.” Marian Catholic looks forward to celebrating the 85th birthday of Sister Marion whose enthusiasm for the Mission has never waned.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT Sister Agnes Ann Pisel, O.P.

While many would take pride in having one successful career at Marian Catholic, Sister Agnes Ann Pisel, O.P. has had the good fortune to enjoy two successful tenures on the Marian Catholic faculty. As Theology Department Chair for 18 years, Sister Agnes Ann took on numerous roles beyond the classroom in her inaugural visit to Marian from 1973 to 1979 and then again during her current tenure that began in 1986. As a key contributor to so many special events at the school, Sister Agnes Ann’s 1970’s tenure included service as theology teacher, freshman class moderator, member of the Faculty Council and education committee for the Courage to Lead Campaign, and moderator of the Sodality, the pioneer version of Marian Catholic’s Service Club. Along with Theology Department Chair, Sister’s return to Marian called her to serve as a Kairos Retreat leader, sacristan in the Convent, and participant on several school committees. Throughout her 32 years at Marian Catholic she has ministered as an outstanding Theology teacher who is dedicated to her students. “I think of three simple phrases when I think of Sister Agnes Ann; a beautiful faithful spirit, an open heart, and pure kindness,” according to alum Nancy Lynch Virene ’81. “I was blessed to have Sister Agnes Ann as my religion teacher way back when, and I always felt very welcomed by her and understood. She has a knack for accepting all people, even the sometimes challenging teenager, and with utter compassion! She is always ready with a welcome smile whenever you are in her presence. In our world of fast movement, it is a pleasure that such a warm individual still exists, and in Sister’s case, above, and beyond.”

Despite wearing many hats, Sister’s philosophy is quite simple. “Use your gifts, study, stay focused, set realistic goals, and work to achieve them,” said the Granite City native. “Be the best that you can with the gifts that you have been given by God. Look forward to each new day and develop relationships with your family, friends, and those with whom you work. Make the most of the present moment without dwelling on the past or dreaming only of tomorrow.” Sister Agnes Ann was certainly prepared well by her studies at St. Ambrose College and DePaul University with degrees from St. Joseph in Rensselaer, IN and Providence College in Providence, RI. She has continued her studies and enrichment by attending workshops and conferences along with her personal study. Sister Agnes Ann has enjoyed her teaching career, molding generations of students at Marian Catholic. “An amazing thing about Marian is the family spirit we have,” Sister Agnes Ann explained. “Students and staff come together from different areas and backgrounds and we always seem to blend into a Marian Family. The staff is caring and supportive of one another and we are all dedicated to the students. I continue to study, learn, and seek a better way to reach students and to add spark and interest to the class. Today, Sister Agnes Ann serves as a moderator in the Think Tank, a tutorial center for students, and continues her involvement on the Faculty Council. “I feel privileged to have influenced thousands of young people and colleagues over the years and I have been influenced by them. All of us have grown in the process.”

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Pictured: Marian Catholic Board of Directors attended a retreat with Sacred Heart Griffin High School, Springfield, IL, and Rosary Highschool, Aurora, IL

The Marian Catholic Board of Directors participated in a daylong retreat with Directors from Sacred Heart Griffin High School in Springfield and Rosary High School in Aurora. The three high schools are sponsored institutions of the Dominican Sisters of Springfield and had transitioned within the same timeframe from Advisory Boards to Boards of Directors. A variety of activities was planned for the day, including Eucharist in the Motherhouse chapel, brunch with the sisters, and a history of Dominican mission and education coordinated by Sister Dominica Brennan, O.P., the Director of Mission Integration for the Congregation.

Clarification of the distinction between governance and management was offered in a presentation by Dr. Donald O’Neal, Professor of Management in the College of Business and Management at the University of Illinois at Springfield. Emphasizing the revitalizing power of transformation within institutions, Dr. O’Neal stressed the need for governance and management to understand the roles and responsibilities of each and to focus together on every aspect of quality improvement undertaken in support of the Mission.

THE ENTRANCE EXAM SCHOLARSHIP Creating an environment of excellence is a priority at Marian Catholic. In an effort to maintain a student body of academic distinction, Marian Catholic offers scholarships to incoming freshmen who score at the 90th percentile or above on the Entrance Exam. Scholarships range from $2,000 to $8,000, depending on the student’s score. Students who receive Entrance Exam Scholarships are still eligible to apply for additional scholarship opportunities conditional on student need. In the spring of 2012, Marian Catholic awarded $143,000 to 36 students for outstanding scores on the entrance exam.

It started with a light, consistent mist as golfers prepared for the 23rd Annual Marian Catholic Endowment Golf Classic on August 13, 2012 at Flossmoor Country Club and Idlewild Country Club. As the day progressed, the rain followed. The mild to moderate rainfall covered the golf courses while 165 golfers, unaffected by conditions, played their rounds. Whether to support Marian Catholic High School’s Endowment Classic Scholarship Fund or to enjoy the day with good friends and colleagues, the classic was a tremendous success. The 2012 EGC raised $109,000, exceeding the $100,000 goal. First-year manager of the popular event, Patricia Trebe, commended the Advancement Office leadership and the team effort along with the golf committee of 24 members, co-chaired by Greg Underwood, Flossmoor, IL and Mark Peifer ’81, Munster, IN. Established in 1989, the Marian Catholic Golf Classic has focused on building a future of scholarships through endowment. “The balance in the Endowment Golf Classic account grows stronger every year,” said Sister Judine Hilbing, O.P., President of Marian Catholic. “The scholarships we award are funded by the market return on investments, so all the proceeds from this event strengthen the principal investment of the endowment.” 6

Mike Kennedy ’80, who participates annually with a fivesome that’s composed of elementary to high school classmates and friends, said, “I was blessed with a Marian Catholic education by my parents and I have both a duty and a desire to share that same blessing with others. The Endowment Classic is a good way to give back and to have a great time doing it.” At the start of play, golfer guests were welcomed and thanked by current EGC Scholars, William Perkins, a junior, and Hannah Schmitz, a senior. Each shared with the golfers and sponsors their personal reflection on the scholarship program, promising “not to let them down” as they pursue academic studies along with band and lacrosse, respectively, helping them to become Scholars with a Soul in the Marian tradition. For 35 students this past school year, the Endowment Golf Classic was more than just a golf outing. For them, it meant the advantage of a Marian Catholic High School education through the Endowment Classic Scholarship Fund. The fund has grown to become the largest scholarship within the Marian Catholic institutional endowment portfolio, posting more than $2.3 million, awarding $80,000 in scholarships this past year to students of solid academic promise, demonstrating financial need. This funding achievement is only possible because of the loyal support from our MCHS community and stewardship of the Dominican Sisters and the Board of Directors.

The Marian Catholic

Endowment Golf Classic 2013

The Marian Catholic Endowment Golf Classic Committee is proud to announce the 2013 golf outing will be held at Olympia Fields Country Club on Monday, September 16th “Hosting the Marian Catholic Endowment Golf Classic at the famed Olympia Fields Country Club has always been a goal of the EGC Committee and we are pleased to offer this opportunity to our golfer guests next year while keeping the same rate as years past,” said Greg Underwood, co-chair of the event. The event will be played on both of Olympia Fields’ two famed courses, the North Course and the South Course. “The event is guaranteed to be a great experience for every golfer who enjoys a world class Chicago south suburban course, golfing where Tiger Woods and Bobby Jones have played, meeting new life-long friends, and winning great prizes while donating to college preparatory high school education,” said EGC committee member and Marian Catholic parent Paul Jenkins. “The Endowment Golf Classic features playing your own ball, just like Tiger or Bobby, while offering outstanding prizes, and the absolute best valued auction right at the course.”

The famed bell-tower and clubhouse at the Olympia Fields Country Club will be the centerpiece for the 2013 Endowment Golf Classic.

Registration Cost The event cost at Olympia Fields is an exceptional value at $295 per golfer, the same rate as past years, and will include 18-holes of championship golf on the course of choice, along with lunch, course refreshments, dinner, open bar, and golfer participation gifts. “The Endowment Golf Classic is a wonderful opportunity to share ideas and open new doors for opportunities for both friendship and for growing your business,” said Michael Olszak, MCHS Board of Director and Endowment Golf Classic Committee member. “It also is a unique occasion to spend some time with community leaders from the surrounding area. There is tremendous value in the event in that one makes new contacts and new friends along with a shared responsibility supporting our community and school.”

Young Alums Special Offer As a result of generous offers from two committee members who want to be sure the outing stays affordable for our young alumni, they will gift the cost difference for the first 30 Young Alums who reserve at the special rate of $195 to alumni 10 years out of Marian Catholic (2003-2013). “This is a terrific chance to play a premier course that many of us would not have access to and could not afford at a private course of this caliber at this price,” said Christopher Lilek ’04, EGC Committee Member. In 2011, Olympia Fields hosted the 63rd United States Girls’ Junior Championship and in 2015, the tradition will continue with the playing of the 115th United States Amateur Championship, after which Olympia Fields will join only eight other American clubs - including Winged Foot, Oakland Hills, and Cherry Hills - that have hosted the United States Open Championship (1928, 2003), the United States Senior Open Championship (1997), the PGA Championship (1925, 1961), and the United States Amateur Championship (2015).

Registration Information A terrific turnout is expected and golfer guests are welcome and encouraged to make early reservations. Reservations will be taken on a first come, first served basis. A space will only be reserved once registration is paid. Invitations will be mailed in June, however, registrations can be placed in advance by contacting Patricia Trebe, Annual Programs Manager. To receive an invitation, or for more information, contact Pat Trebe at 708-756-9405, or email her at ptrebe@marianchs.com. 7

It is sometimes thought that the title of philanthropist is reserved for those who maintain a consistent pattern of significant charitable giving over a long period of time. Two deceased friends of Marian Catholic High School, Edward Savant and Mark A. Altman ’66, have demonstrated that promoting the well-being of humankind through philanthropic giving can be accomplished in a variety of ways.

Edward Savant, a professional investor himself, was cognizant of the power of solid investment management and approached charitable giving in the traditional sense. In 1995, Ed, and his wife Betty, established the Erman C. Savant and Lawrence J. Cassidy Families Memorial Scholarship for the expressed purpose of granting scholarships to students who demonstrate strong character and academic excellence, and who, without the assistance of the scholarship, might not otherwise be able to Edward Savant and wife, Betty Savant continue at Marian Catholic. Throughout its 17 years in existence, the scholarship fund benefitted from years of a strong market return and was, therefore, able to give generous scholarships during years of recession, as well. This year alone, eight students were recipients of partial scholarships from the Erman C. Savant and Lawrence J. Cassidy Families Memorial Scholarship. These eight students exemplify the Marian Spirit in ways similar to those of Ed and Betty’s own children, Lisa Savant Cameron ’84, Ed Savant ’85, and Julie Savant Galvan ’89. Betty and Ed Savant always placed enormous value on the concept of personal philanthropy, extending that view to include the Marian Catholic family in their estate plans, becoming members of the Marian Catholic Veritas Society for Planned Giving. Upon Ed’s death in 2011, his estate gift was directed to his and Betty’s endowed scholarship. The Savants have been loyal friends and family, serving as members of the Advisory Board and sharing their expertise in whatever manner might benefit the community of Marian Catholic High School. The memory of Edward Savant remains with us in the students supported by his scholarship program. The endowed scholarship has been established in perpetuity, fortified by his estate gift, and will keep Ed’s spirit alive within the walls of Marian Catholic. Mark A. Altman ’66 held a connection to Marian Catholic that was not discovered until his last will and testament was probated in the Circuit Court of Citrus County, Florida. During Mark’s time at Marian, he was immersed in the pursuit of knowledge and enjoyed the scholarly aspects of campus life. It was this love of learning and the inspiration of his teachers that encouraged him to become a high school social studies teacher, a career from which he never wavered until retirement. Mark had not established the traditional alumni link. Once he graduated, he had little or no contact with his alma mater and did not return for reunions or other events. It came then, completely by surprise, that he directed his end-of-life resources for the expressed purpose of enhancing the school library. This estate gift came at the exact time as the construction of the enhanced Media/ Technology Center necessitated a connecting door from the library to the courtyard. The library was remodeled and the courtyard was created as a beautiful space for reflective study and recreational reading. The memory of Mark Altman remains with us in the beauty of the library and garden. Mark’s spirit and philanthropy live on in every student who enjoys being a scholar in the peace of the garden or in the comfort of the library.

ATHLETICS Athletic Director, Dave Mattio ’66,

STEPS DOWN AS HEAD FOOTBALL COACH Cont’d from page 1 An accomplished clinician, Mattio has gained broad recognition from his peers, including induction into the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1997. Mattio is a member of the Marian Catholic High School Hall of Fame and the East Suburban Jeremy ’07, Jody and Dave ’66 Mattio Catholic Conference Hall of Fame, and was named Frank Leahy Prep Coach of the Year in 1994. “Marian Catholic will always be indebted to Coach Mattio for his leadership and devotion to the football program,” Principal Sister Kathleen Anne Tait, O.P., praised. “His sincere concern for each player and undying support for Marian Catholic have been hallmarks of his career. He has left a legacy on which another can build for continued growth of the program.” A hallmark of Mattio’s career includes preparing athletes for the next level. Along with sending hundreds to continue their football careers in college, Mattio’s teams have produced four athletes who eventually played in the National Football League. Current Philadelphia Eagle Dennis Kelly ’08 was preceded by John Holecek ’90 (Buffalo Bills, San Diego Chargers, Atlanta Falcons) and Super Bowl Champions Mike Prior ’81 (Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Indianapolis Colts, Green Bay Packers) and Rodney Harrison ’91 (Chargers, New England Patriots). While, Mattio will enjoy spending more time with wife Jody, their five children, and 14 grandchildren, he will remain at Marian as Athletic Director, a position he has held since 1974.

JERRY VERDE ’95 IS MARIAN CATHOLIC’S SEVENTH FOOTBALL COACH

ATHLETES

Cont’d from page 1

Verde succeeds his former coach Mattio ’66, who compiled a 251-141 mark in 37 seasons as head coach, good for 19th alltime on the IHSA victories list. In three campaigns with Verde as his starting middle linebacker (1992-94), Mattio led the Spartans to a 30-7 mark, three IHSA playoff appearances and two ESCC championships. “What a great Christmas present Marian Photo credit John Smierciak, Catholic received when Jerry Verde agreed The Times of Northwest Indiana to become the new head football coach,” Mattio said. “Jerry will bring an uncommon background to the Marian Catholic program, having had success at the high school and collegiate levels as a player and the same with the variety of coaching experiences that have allowed him to reach the level of excellence. His commitment to excellence will immediately impact the Marian Catholic community and the football program.” In six seasons at the helm of the Crete-Monee squad, Verde guided the Warriors to a 56-14 mark and a playoff appearance in each year. The recent 14-0 campaign this fall culminated in a 33-26 championship-game decision over Cary-Grove. Verde has also served on the Marian staff previously in 2003 and had assistant coach stints at Homewood-Flossmoor and the University of St. Francis as well. “Marian Catholic football has a very strong tradition of excellence,” Verde said. “It is my hope and desire to build upon that tradition, and ignite some new interest into the program. Success in terms of grand accomplishments will likely not happen overnight, but the immediate future is crucial in establishing a strong foundation to build upon.” A onetime ESCC Defensive Player of the Year, Verde carried his playing talents to the University of St. Francis, where he earned Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference First Team All-Academic honors. He remains the Saints’ single-season record-holder for tackles with 140. 10

Marian made its mark on Illinois High School Association state tournaments this fall, as the Spartans captured one Top 10 finish in their appearances in four state tournaments. Following up a second-place finish in the East Suburban Catholic Conference women’s tennis tournament, junior Gaby Rosales got red hot in state play. The Spartan IHSA sectional champion posted a 5-2 mark in state competition to capture sixth place in Singles. The Marian Catholic doubles tandem of senior Megan Melby and junior Giselle Beebe also earned a pair of state tournament victories as Marian scored 13 points to finish tied for 17th place in state as a team. Making her fourth appearance in the women’s golf IHSA state tournament, senior Bree Veazey scored a 79 in the rainshortened meet to capture 16th place in Class AA. The Marian swimmers qualified three entries for the IHSA state meet, as sophomore Abby Kresal made the grade in the 200-yard individual medley (24th place) and 100 breaststroke (16th place), and senior Paige Wieser was a qualifier in the 100 freestyle. Meanwhile, Coach Sean Scanlon was named Sectional Coach of the Year for the Lincoln-Way East Sectional. The Marian Catholic women’s volleyball team turned in a second straight sterling season. Following up a Fourth Place IHSA State finish in 2011, the Spartans posted an impressive 28-9 campaign this fall, including an ESCC victory over eventual Class 4A State Champion Benet Academy.

MARIAN BAND EARNS FIFTH PLACE OVERALL AT BANDS OF AMERICA GRAND NATIONALS IN INDIANAPOLIS MCHS Band second in Class AA, wins Outstanding Visual

MCHS Marching Band’s finale of their perfermance at BOA Grand Nations

The Marian Catholic High School Marching Band, one of only 12 schools in the nation to reach the finals of the Bands of America Grand Nationals, captured 5th Place overall on November 10, 2012, at the Lucas Oil Dome in Indianapolis. “We are so very proud of the students and their incredible achievements of this fall,” said Greg Bimm, MCHS Band Director. “They walked tall in the footprints of the many great Marian Band members who have gone before and extended one of the greatest legacies in the high school band arena.” Marian Catholic received the highest score of the 45 bands in it’s preliminary round and the highest music score of all 90 bands in prelims. They also earned second place in Class AA at BOA Grand Nationals, while gathering first place in AA for Outstanding Visual Performance. “Nationally the level of competition and monetary input continues to grow,” Bobby Lambert, MCHS Assistant Band Director, said. “The typical budget for many of these bands ranges in the hundreds of thousands of dollars where ours is simply not. However, because of the dedication and vision from Marian Catholic’s students and staff, it allows us to be competitive in this type of arena.”

MCHS Marching Band competing at BOA Grand Nationals

The band’s competitive show was called My Brother’s Keeper. The show was a commentary on war, slavery, and genocide, but is even more a plea for peace. Moreover, the Marian Catholic Band won its 33rd consecutive Illinois Marching Band state championship in Class on October 27, at Illinois State University, as well as winning its fourth straight overall Grand Championship at ISU and 12th overall. Marian recently captured their place in the BOA Regionals at Indianapolis, including a first place in Class AA. “Every season is an adventure, the kids really took it to a new level this year,” Lambert said. “By winning the State competition by five points, it was clear where we stood.” Making its record 29th consecutive appearance in the BOA Grand Nationals finals, the Marian Band has won a record seven Grand National Championships, the last coming in 2000. The Spartan Band was the only Catholic band among the 12 qualifiers at BOA Finals, as well as the only representative from Illinois.

MCHS THEATER PRESENTED ARSENIC AND OLD LACE The Marian Catholic High School Fine Arts Department presented Arsenic and Old Lace on October 19 thru October 21, in the Monsignor Croarkin Auditorium. “I am very proud of the cast and crew; their dedication to this performance was apparent on the night of the shows,” Mark Donaway, Theater Director, said. Arsenic and Old Lace is about the eccentric Brewster family and how they deal with the real world around them. The hysterical comedy deals with murder, plot twists and turns, and an adventure leaving the audience wanting more and more. “My role in this performance was amusing,” Copper Packard ’14, as Teddy Brewster, said. “I was able to explore my comedic side as an actor. There were also new faces in this show making the experience fresh and fun.” The cast included: Hannah Lang ’13 as Abby Brewster, Blake Jeffries ’14 as Rev. Dr. Harper, Cooper Packard ’14 as Teddy Brewster, Doug Larcher ’13 as Officer O’Hara, Kyliah Thompson ’14

The Class of 1962 gathered together at the end of August to celebrate their 50 Year Class Reunion at Marian Catholic. The weekend saw 80 guests on campus, of which 27 alums traveled from out of state. As the first to graduate, the class once again was the first to celebrate a 50th Reunion. Classmate Dan Mulhollan helped place the reunion in historical perspective reminding fellow alums that in 1962 gas was 28 cents a gallon, and a postage stamp was 4 cents. This was the era of JFK, LBJ, and Marilyn Monroe! Chubby Checker, the Four Seasons, Elvis, and the Beach Boys populated the music scene. John Glenn orbited the earth and the Soviets were building nine missile bases in Cuba as the Class of ’62 was merrily ambling to Father Huntimer’s history class. The alumni well remembered that U.S. involvement in Vietnam was slowly escalating and that some classmates made the greatest sacrifice. Dan reflected upon the feelings of many classmates, even those who could not join the reunion, as he noted “that the evening was to celebrate friendship, of course, but also education recognizing the legacy of many dedicated Dominican Sisters that worked hard through our distractions to get us to be enthusiastic about learning.” “Our class never had to endure the trials of many freshmen - upper classmen - which afforded us an unusually early opportunity for leadership in sports, student politics, and, at least for the guys, dating,” Dan said. “We were quite willing and able to select the school colors and symbol, the Spartans.” Pride ran through the 1962 alums as they shared stories of their high school years. The special opportunity they received from Marian Catholic is remembered and cherished 50 years later.

Frank Rossi ’62, Ronald Napoleon ’62, and Casimir Skorpinksi ’62

“I don’t believe I truly realized the impact Marian’s influence had on me until later in life.” Ed Brown said. “I have to believe it’s the closeness and trust we had with each other as a class and with our teachers, since most of what we were experiencing was new to both of us.” Reunion festivities kicked off with a Marian Catholic varsity football game and continued through the weekend, including a celebration dinner at Idlewild Country Club, alumni family Mass with the Dominican Sisters and a closing brunch in the Sister M. Paul McCaughey, O.P., Leadership Center. “I think our Sunday Mass together, remembering our deceased classmates and teachers was most beautiful and moving, as was the brunch and the tour of the school,” Ed said. While Marian Catholic’s facilities have evolved over the years, the memories, and life experiences alumni gained during their high school years remain fixed in their hearts. “The small class of 167 had a strong camaraderie,” Julianne Finlayson Mulhollan said. “I enjoyed playing intramural sports and participating in the senior class play.” After 50 years of not seeing some classmates, Julianne simply relished chatting up with classmates and listening to the Dominican Sisters of Springfield sing at Mass. Dan’s closing words echoed a sentiment that aptly summarized the special 50 Year Class Reunion weekend. “How far we have come since we walked across the stage to receive our diplomas. During these years we have been sustained by purpose, by pride, by prayer, by patriotism, and perseverance. And, even after 50 years, we still anticipate what the future may hold for the Premier Class of 1962.”

THE MARIAN CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP LAUNCHED

Finding Healing in Writing Julienne Mascitti Lentz ’73 began a blog, My Mom and Me...The Last Chapter, to cope with her mom’s diagnosis of dementia, her move to a rehabilitation facility, and her ultimate placement in hospice. Her blog is about a mother and daughter relationship in a most difficult stage of life. Much of her blog is their conversations, sometimes showing the stages of dementia, but more often showing their new found mutual love and respect for each other. Julienne’s goal is to give her mom as much dignity and respect as possible through her last chapter. She is overwhelmed by the many supportive comments. “What I had not considered was that I would be helping others by sharing my family’s story,” said Lentz. My Mom and Me...The Last Chapter has over 103 posts and more than 7,600 views. www.mymomandmethelastchapter.blogspot.com

This scholarship honors the alumni legacy and is awarded to a student whose parent or grandparent is an alumnus or almna of MCHS. The scholarship is the result of accumulated gifts from alumni of Marian Catholic High School to the Marian Annual Fund restricted to The Endowed Scholarship Program entrusted to the direction and management of the Dominican Sisters and continues the spirit of MCHS Teaching Scholars with a Soul. This fund, founded in 2011, will remain active and open to future gifts with the goal of $100,000 and, until that time, provide a partial scholarship. A report of the fund’s activity is generated annually to be shared with the Alumni Association leadership. The first scholarship from the fund is expected to be awarded in 2013. To give to this Alumni Scholarship fund, or to learn more about the Alumni Association, please contact Carol Burke Swanson ’81 at 708-756-9775 or cswanson@marianchs.com.

About the Writer: The Naperville resident’s work has been published in “Chicken Soup for the Soul” several times; each piece features a family member and their story.
