Marian Catholic’s
33rd appearance in the Bands of America Grand National Finals featured a program based on Kintsugi, the ancient Japanese art of repairing damaged objects with gold. The flaw is seen as a unique piece of the object’s history, which adds to its beauty. Something to remember when we feel broken and need the boundless mercy of God.
A Message from President Vince Krydynski Preaching from the Pulpit of our Lives The Dominican Order is built on a foundation of four pillars: prayer, study, preaching, and community. Marian Catholic celebrates one pillar each year so that when students graduate, they leave with a deeper understanding of the four cornerstones of the Dominican charism. This year we celebrate the 800th anniversary of the founding of the Dominican Order. We unite this year with all Dominicans under the pillar of preaching. As Dominicans, we are called to “preach from the pulpit of our lives.” In solidarity with all Dominicans, this issue of Marian Matters explores some of the ways Marian Catholic answers that call and how we as faculty, staff, students, and alumni preach from the pulpit of our lives. You will find that each voice is different. Some are loud and distinct. Some are soft and more difficult to discern. You will notice that our pulpits vary greatly. I hope this issue inspires you to find and recognize our shared message, regardless of the voice or pulpit – God’s unbridled love reflected in us and through us. Thank you to all those who have used their pulpit to form Marian Catholic by shaping the lives of thousands of young men and women. For those who continue to preach from their pulpit, “…may God the Holy Spirit enlighten us and give us all we need. Eyes to see with, ears to hear with, hands to do the work of God.” May each of us preach like a Dominican today!

LIVING THE FOUR PILLARS: Dominican Preachers Lead by Example The heart of Marian Catholic’s Mission can be found in our Dominican Identity. A pursuit of Truth built upon the “Four Pillars”of Prayer, Study, Community, and Preaching is as central to the life of a Marian Catholic student as it is to the entire Dominican Order. As we celebrate our Dominican values in the Marian Catholic community, we also celebrate with the Dominicans as they commemorate the 800th anniversary of their founding. Their rich and extensive history reminds us that Marian Catholic High School is part of a bigger story that extends to all parts of the world.

Reflections of the ENDURING LEGACY of Coach Dave Mattio By Allen Marazas, Contributing Writer
When President Vince Krydynski sent Marian Catholic faculty and staff an email on Sept. 7, sharing the news of the passing of Dave Mattio, the school’s highly esteemed football coach and athletic director, he referred to Dave as one of the “pillars of Marian Catholic” and rightfully so. Krydynski wrote, “Marian Catholic has…. Individuals (who) are the foundation of who we are and who we strive to be. They support us and sustain us in ways we may never know.”
I
I HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF KNOWING DAVE
since we were in high school together and fellow teachers at Marian Catholic for over 40 years. He was never able to teach me much about sports, but he did teach me volumes about working with the young men and women I taught during those years. He showed me how honesty, integrity, dedication, respect, hard work and yes, even love for my students, were more important that the subject I taught. Whenever we met, he always had a smile, a word of encouragement and usually a question about how things were going with me or my family. He cared and helped me to realize the absolute importance of caring. Dave Mattio set a tone for being the best you can be as a friend, colleague, teacher, and mentor. There is little doubt his leadership and example led hundreds of students to excel in life on and off the field, including Tim Kelly '04, Andy DeLaurentis '93, Tim Swanson '86, Mike Bruni '85, and Mark Talamonti '74. Each of these Marian Catholic alumni recently reflected on the influence Dave Mattio had on them as athletes and individuals. Their stories follow. Tim Kelly '04, played football for Coach Mattio and is currently in his third year as Offensive Quality Control Coach for the NFL’s Houston Texans. Tim’s brother Dennis '08, currently plays for the Tennessee Titans after four seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. “First and foremost, I can honestly say that I couldn’t be any more fortunate than I was by having Coach Dave Mattio as my football coach. (He) demanded the very best

out of you, but would still make you feel loved and cared for. His players would run through a wall if they knew that’s what coach wanted. There are so many lessons that have stuck with me as I have graduated from the halls of Marian and moved on in both my professional and personal life, but none more important than that one – treat people with love. The man loved Marian Catholic and the kids that went to school there – no matter if you played for him, were a cheerleader, a wrestler, a member of the band, or if you had an interaction with the ‘large object in the room,’ he always found a way to make your day better.” “I believe the best way for me to (convey) the principles he taught us is to list them: • Be on time. • You can’t run away from issues; you need to meet them head on. Looking back, this is one of the more powerful principles he instilled in me. You have a problem, figure it out! Don’t avoid it, and don’t ask for other people to figure it out for you. • Losing was unacceptable. The only thing worse than a Monday practice after a loss was a Monday practice after a sloppy win. • If you are prepared, you have no reason to be nervous. Coach would do whatever he could to make sure we were prepared each and every Friday. • Don’t do anything to embarrass him, yourself, your family or this football program. This was said after every game – win, lose or draw in the old gym.” “There are a million more memories and lessons that come to mind when thinking about Coach Mattio. I am very lucky to have had such an inspirational person in my life. There is no question that I would not be where I am today, as a person or a coach, if it weren’t for him.”
Andy DeLaurentis '95, who played offensive guard on Marian Catholic’s 1993 State Championship team, returned to Marian after college as an assistant varsity coach for Coach Mattio. DeLaurentis continues to coach and teach English, and is active in several areas of the Marian Catholic Community. “Dave’s influence on me as his player was lesson after lesson in personal pride, goal setting, responsibility, hard work, dedication and more weight lifting than I thought possible. None of this was browbeaten into us; it’s what you did because that’s what it takes to win, and Dave wanted you as an individual to succeed. He loved – loved – to see his players work hard for success or at least give their best effort in doing so. Dave had the expectation that you work hard for him and he will work hard for you, and real athletes know that, in the long run, your hard work will pay off. Often that payoff was just Dave saying (in that voice of his), ‘Well done!’ ’’ “Dave’s influence carried into my coaching career with him. Dave put coaching in perspective for me. He once mentioned that working hard as a coach is unforgiving, but he added, ‘You do it for the kids. They deserve your hard work.’ It’s an interesting inversion of the traditional coach-player model wherein the coach believes that the players must work hard for him and the outcome of the game is based on player performance rather than coaching leadership, proper practice and game planning. I am still coaching at Marian and that philosophy still resonates with me.”
[ COACH MATTIO [
exercise or the competition. If someone had said that this is what you will learn, I would have laughed and said never in 35 years. Well, it’s 35 years later and I know what I’ve learned can never be repaid in dollars, only repaid in time with others teaching them what I learned from my coach and friend, Dave Mattio.”
“I always found it interesting that Dave was obsessed with the challenge of the game and competing within it. He was never obsessed with winning because there was no selfishness in Dave. He allowed the players their wins, and all the losses were the burden of the coaching staff. Win or lose, he coached because he loved the game and its nuances, the camaraderie, the young men, and the challenges each presented to him. Dave believed that if you’re coaching for the right reasons and in the right way, winning takes care of itself. To Dave, winning was a pleasant offshoot of hard work and intense competition. He was and is still correct.” Tim Swanson '86, played for Coach Mattio as a student athlete, and then returned to help Dave coach the Spartans for several seasons, including the 1993 State Championship season. Tim is currently an assistant varsity football coach at Joliet Catholic Academy. “Dave taught (me) many things throughout our friendship: how to be understanding as a coach, how to work to be a good teammate as a player, how to take ownership in my decisions, and to work hard for what you want in life. All things my parents instilled and Dave reinforced. He helped me understand what ownership was and how to bring kids together for a common goal. Dave took average kids and made (us) so much more because we believed in what he said and no matter how difficult the task, we all worked together to make sure we were successful. To him, being successful wasn’t always about winning, but making sure we learned the lesson through the
Michael Bruni '86, started on the sidelines for Coach Mattio when he was still in grade school as a ball-boy. He played varsity for Dave for three seasons, and returned to Marian Catholic to work with his former coach from 1994-1998. Bruni is a partner with Hub Philanthropic Solutions, a full-service fundraising and not-for-profit consulting practice serving the Chicagoland area. “During a relationship/friendship that spanned over 40 years, I learned a great deal from Dave Mattio, but (nothing more important) than the following.” “One day, while working at Marian during Christmas break, the building was empty and the students were on vacation. Dave and I found ourselves in Sister Mary Paul’s office (Marian Catholic’s former Principal and first President) discussing some business. After we finished our discussion, Dave and I left, walking toward our respective offices through the empty halls. I made what seemed to be a benign comment saying, ‘Isn’t it nice when the students are gone and everything is so quiet?’ Immediately, I knew I was going to get a lesson from Dave as he stopped in his tracks, put his hand on my shoulder and said in his ‘teacher’ voice, ‘This school is at its BEST when the students are here… THEY are the reason why we’re here… they are our purpose. What’s your purpose?’ I was 29 years old, but immediately felt like I was 16 again and had just missed my block. The Coach was still coaching. To this day, I remember his question, ‘What’s your purpose?’ He was totally committed to the students at Marian, regardless of whether they played for him or not. The advancement of students was his purpose and he lived it every day he came to work. It’s a question we should all ask ourselves and every day I focus on my ‘purpose.’ I’m better because of Dave, as so many of us are.”
Mark Talamonti '74, graduated three years after Dave returned to Marian Catholic as a history teacher and Assistant Varsity Football Coach. Talamonti is now a distinguished oncological surgeon and Chairman of Surgery at Northshore University and Vice Chairman of Surgery at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He was one of the physicians who treated Dave during his illness. “For those who played and worked with Coach Mattio during the last 30 years, he was much like a father figure. He was tough, but fair, and he really cared about the welfare and development of his players and coaches. But for those of us who played for him when he first arrived as an assistant coach at Marian in the 70’s, he was more like a big brother and a role model for the kind of person you aspired to become. He was a Chicago Heights legend back in the day when the Chicago Heights Star was read more frequently than the downtown Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times. We sometimes forget what a tremendous athlete and student Coach Mattio was during his days at Marian. Before there was Walter Payton and Michael Jordan for the grade school kids in Chicago Heights, there was Dave Mattio. When he came back to Marian in 1971, we all considered it an honor and privilege to play for him. He was as competitive and fiery then as he was when he was a player. It wasn’t uncommon to see him pick up a basketball and scrimmage with us when he was coaching. Yet, as time went by, he became a trusted and valued friend to each of his former players from that era. And that will be how I will always remember him and why I will miss my friend.”
I
This is what should be remembered most about Dave Mattio, not the number of athletes he sent to the NFL, not his career won-loss record, not the number of conference championships, or even that he coached a team to a state championship. Rather, what everyone should remember about Coach Mattio is the positive impact he had on the lives of thousands of student athletes that he coached and mentored by preaching from the pulpit of his life. THAT IS HIS LEGACY.

But on Nov. 12, at Illinois State University’s Redbird Arena, the Spartans of Marian Catholic got the Women’s Volleyball title they really coveted. Led by sophomore standout Temi Thomas-Ailara and a tremendous supporting cast, Marian stunned the defending state champion Hurricanes to claim the IHSA Class 3A State Championship. The Spartans (32-9) prevailed, 25-22, 22-25, 25-22 to hand Marian Central just its second setback in 42 matches. “We were a talented bunch at the beginning of the year, but not a state champion team,” explained Marian Catholic Coach Ryan Summers, who also led the Spartans to a fourth-place trophy in his inaugural campaign in 2011. “We were beaten by several teams, most of them ranked in the

The state crown joins other Marian Catholic team champions in football (1993), baseball (2012), and girls basketball (2013). It was that strong
tradition that initially drew Ryan Summers to Marian Catholic. “Six years ago, I sat down for an interview with (the late Athletic Director) Dave Mattio,” Summers explained. “At that time all I knew about Marian was it had a strong academic reputation and it would have been my high school had we not moved when I was in junior high. As Dave spoke, you could see the pride and love he had for the school. He regaled me with stories about Marian and the great culture and great history that Marian has.” “Marian has excellence in so many areas and such a great culture, it deserves to have the same in volleyball. I vowed to him that if he chose to give me the opportunity, I would not stop until Marian volleyball would return to its earlier culture so that he could be as proud of this sport as he is the rest of the school.” Mission accomplished. ThomasAilara saw to that in the title match with a blistering 18 kills and nine digs. Senior Jordan Piekarski added 18 assists, while senior Ashley Sledge collected six kills and senior Rachel Churilla chipped in 12 digs. “The team exemplified Marian at its best putting the needs of others and the team before themselves,” Summers said. “They understand the value of hard work and teamwork. They know how to learn from those before them and how to teach those coming afterward. Most will play at the college level and all will be examples of the academic and athletic excellence that Marian Catholic is known for. Thanks to them, a promise to a great man has been kept.”

Marian Catholic excelled in Golf with representatives in both the men’s and women’s state tournaments. Senior Mira Nicpon captured 39th place at women’s state in Decatur and junior Alec Thompson was 91st in the men’s state tourney in Normal.
In Women’s Swimming, senior Mae Van Beest made the state grade, as she timed 24.46 in the 50-yard freestyle to qualify through the Lincoln-Way Central Sectional. Battling several larger schools, the Spartans earned seventh place as a team in the sectional. Van Beest went on to finish 32nd at state.
Cross Country Cross Country had a record-setting campaign, as two girls represented the Spartans as the first multiple qualifiers at the IHSA state level. Senior Kelly Mindak capped an outstanding career with a 64th-place finish and freshman Samantha Barrett earned 54th place. The tandem qualifiers broke a 12-year string without a women’s state qualifier for Marian Catholic.
“ This year we were fortunate to have two state qualifiers,” longtime Coach Tim Sovereign praised. “What is overshadowed by this is just how well they finished at the sectional meet, both finishing in the Top 10.” “When individual success becomes a habit, that translates into team success. That’s what we hope for in the future. I think this season pointed us in the right direction.” Both Marian Catholic runners broke the previous school record for three miles. On the team level, both the men’s and women’s teams qualified for sectional competition.

JASON BENETTI
Shares Life Lessons By Allen Marazas, Contributing Writer

When the Marian Catholic High School student body filed into the West Gym on Oct. 3 to hear a presentation by White Sox TV home play-by-play announcer Jason Benetti, it would probably be safe to say that most of them didn’t know exactly what to expect. Regardless of their expectations, or lack thereof, what they heard was a lesson in the opportunity and wonder of surprise. Benetti drove home that point and others, as he spoke about respecting the differences in people and not making judgments about people until you know them. Underscoring that theme was the fact that Benetti was born with a lung disorder and ultimately was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, a neurological disorder that affects muscle coordination, movement and balance, hardly the beginning one would expect for a successful career in sports announcing.
10 MARIAN MATTERS WINTER 2017
Marian Catholic alumna Emily Joria '10, Digital Content Coordinator for the Chicago White Sox, accompanied Jason Benetti on his visit to Marian Catholic.
Benetti’s presentation was well received as evidenced by the standing ovation he received at the conclusion of his remarks. Immediately after, a number of students came forward to speak to Benetti and shake his hand. One of those who approached him was Sophomore Andrew Yock. Yock said that he was impressed with Benetti’s encouragement of curiosity, of asking questions to learn more about other people and not letting others define you. Yock remarked that Benetti’s belief that you should create your own reality and not allow others to limit your self-image, goals, or success seemed like something he could use in his own life. But when he approached Benetti after the presentation, Yock said they talked about baseball and the White Sox even though Yock is a Cubs fan, a fact he did not share with Benetti.
Senior Connor O’Hare also spoke with Benetti following the presentation. They too talked mostly about baseball. O’Hare said he was impressed by Benetti’s willingness to accept constructive criticism and how he actually sought out critiques from professionals at the beginning of his career even though the critiques were not always flattering. Benetti’s persistence and work ethic also made an impression on O’Hare. Jason Benetti brought a message of inclusion and acceptance to Marian Catholic reinforcing the Marian philosophy of creating a “....Christian atmosphere in which students can develop relationships based on trust, respect, and appreciation of individual gifts.” (Marian Catholic Philosophy adopted January 1977)

mpactful preaching doesn’t always take the form of words.
For members of Marian Catholic’s Service Club, their message of care and concern is expressed through actions. Led by Joy Chase, Director of Student Services, and Megan Springer '03, Guidance Counselor, the Service Club is a voluntary student organization comprised of scholars with a soul who have a desire to give back to Marian Catholic and the community. Projects range from smaller, afterschool activities like collecting cases of water for Flint, Michigan, to all-day, off-campus events. On a scheduled day off in October, several Marian Catholic students traveled to Trinity Lutheran Church in Tinley Park to share their time and talents with Feed My Starving Children. Joined by 40 other students from schools around the area, Marian Catholic Service Club volunteers packed bags of nutritional food mix to feed malnourished children around the world. Over 50 boxes of 36 packets of food were filled within two hours, enough to feed 51 children for a year. Marian Catholic’s Service Club focuses on local projects as well, such as packaging cookies and thank you notes for area police officers and fire fighters. Service Club students also partner with South Suburban PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter) on a monthly basis to assist those in need in Chicago’s south suburbs. Recently, students stayed after school to cook a meal for shelter guests that included chicken casserole, vegetables, and a sweet treat of brownies. The meal was served the next day to men, women and children at St. Lawrence O’Toole Parish, one of PADS shelter locations. Up next for the Service Club, a blood drive in January. St. Dominic said “Be learned. Take the preaching task seriously.” Through their efforts, members of Marian Catholic’s Service Club are learning much about preaching and the sharing of Dominican values with those they encounter in the world around them. It’s a task they take very seriously.

While Michael recalls many fond memories of Marian Catholic, including winning the Bands of America Grand National Championship in 1994, “it was the little moments, doing the musicals, and the appreciation from friends, audiences. It was going to senior centers around the holidays for Marian Singers. The little things add up to those greatest moments.” Upon graduation, Michael took the skills and talents he had honed at Marian Catholic to Illinois Wesleyan University. “Marian gave me a base to walk into college and I had a compass of where to look and what to look for.” Cavalieri ultimately realized his calling was in music. Originally a computer science major with a music and vocal performance minor, Michael switched the two after one semester. Once he received his degree in Music and Vocal Performance, Cavaleri headed west to Arizona State where he received a Masters degree in Voice. While auditioning for the Santa Fe Opera over the summer, Michael was heard by a Yale Choir Director and was asked to come to Yale where he later received an artist diploma. Today, Cavalieri balances his life in the computer world with his life in the arts world. “What I learned is applicable to real life and my career. It is a testimony to what happens here,” says Cavalieri of his time at Marian. Michael aims to spread a wider appreciation of the arts and knows that’s something Marian Catholic can help provide. “My only hope is that we can use a place like here and the relationships here to keep improving the fine arts, the appreciation, and their practice in the south suburbs.” His advice to those who are reserved about immersing themselves in an artistic event such as an opera is to just go. “Go to the Lyric Opera, get a weekday ticket and go. You might not like it, you might love it, but it would pique your interest and curiosity.” Looking back at Marian Catholic Michael appreciates the lifelong friendships he made and the values that were instilled in him. Together, they have helped him succeed in his career and personal life.

Tim LaVelle'13
One of Harvard’s Fifteen Most Interesting Seniors Photo: Isabella S. Beroutosos
Meet Tim LaVelle '13, one of the most quirky, bright and talented members of Harvard University’s Class of 2017. “I just like opening doors,” Tim E. LaVelle '17 says as we duck into a dark, narrow passageway in the basement of Eliot House. This tunnel, which opens by the underground art room, is one of many Eliot secrets LaVelle has stumbled upon during his three years in the House. But unearthing House secrets is far from the only thing LaVelle has done for Eliot. He runs the record room, the recording studio, and the Eliot bike-sharing program, and he’s the official House librarian. If this sounds like a lot, that’s because it is. “At the beginning of the year, it definitely feels like a full-time job” LaVelle says. LaVelle says that he picked up these jobs naturally over the course of his time in Eliot. The record room, for example, is his favorite place in the House. Tucked away in E entryway, the room is bare yet homey, with only a couch, a shelf lined with records, and a record player. To the tune of Chopin’s Nocturne No. 1, one of his favorite records, LaVelle tells me that he’s reorganized the record collection alphabetically. He’s also started a weekly music listening hour on Wednesdays from 9-10 p.m. LaVelle has been interested in music since high school, when he learned to play the saxophone, and views listening hour as a way to share his passion with others. Each week, he and an Eliot tutor put together program notes on a few classical pieces and listen with about 10 students over cheese and crackers. “If people know about the history of the pieces and a little bit of the music, it becomes much more approachable,” he says.
LaVelle started working as Eliot’s librarian in the beginning of his junior year. His work involves mostly re-shelving, but the appeal was “ just the knowledge,” he says. He shows me two famous biographies of Charles Eliot that he describes as “the fountain of all [his] facts.” LaVelle hasn’t finished the books, but to a Charles Eliot rookie like me, his knowledge seems encyclopedic. LaVelle offers me his best Charles Eliot facts: Eliot was the longest serving and youngest president of Harvard, and he tried to buy MIT five times. “I just like doing lots of different things,” LaVelle says, when I ask him how he picked up his other Eliot jobs. This attitude defines not only his roles in Eliot but also his course of study: LaVelle is a joint concentrator in Bioengineering and German. He picked Bioengineering because “it has a real breadth of information” and chose German serendipitously; he took it for the first time to complete his language requirement. LaVelle has spent the last two summers working in Germany and hopes to return after graduation. Despite a rigorous academic schedule and so many Eliot responsibilities, LaVelle is also acting in a German play called “Hin und Her” (“Hither and Fro”) about border politics, and is the captain of the club broomball team. But, LaVelle admits, “If I’m going to be honest, I’m known as the Eliot man.” This is a title LaVelle embraces, but as graduation nears, it’s one he’ll have to give up. LaVelle reassures me that Eliot will continue to run smoothly—he has students lined up to take over his many jobs. As for him, leaving Eliot will “be a big change, no doubt,” he says. “I have jobs, and I run rooms, but in reality it’s for the people. I’ll miss the people.” Article reprinted with permission by The Harvard Crimson

2015-2016
2015-2016
Financial Summary
Report of Annual Giving
Marian Catholic High School is continually reminded of the generosity of our benefactors in nearly every aspect of our students’ daily lives. This report reflects the commitment of Marian Catholic alumni, family, and friends to Catholic education as expressed through financial gifts to the school. Marian Catholic operates on a fiscal year, July 1 through June 30. Fiscal year 2015-2016 gifts to the school were invited and recorded in keeping with the institutional accounting practice. While a calendar year record of giving is generated and mailed to our donors to accommodate federal tax regulations, recognitions of gifts to Marian Catholic continue on a fiscal year basis, consistent with the school’s financial reporting. The following list of benefactors reflects all gifts to Marian Catholic received during the 2015-2016 fiscal year. These include single or multiple gifts or pledge payments received through all programs and events. Also included are corporate, foundation, and matching gifts. Listings within the giving societies reflect the donor’s total annual giving. Through the stewardship of the Dominican Sisters, the Board of Directors, and administration, gifts to Marian Catholic remain a solid investment that directly benefits our students by funding a broad spectrum of needs beyond the operating budget. Heartfelt thanks to all of those who share in our mission of Teaching Scholars with a Soul. We are grateful for your support!

Supporting
Scholars with a Soul
A gift to the Marian Fund, the school’s main source of unrestricted funding, touches the lives of our students on a daily basis, and enhances the Marian Catholic experience in more ways than can be counted. The Marian Fund supports our academic programs, allows our arts programs to flourish, makes athletic opportunities available to students, and supports them as they grow and learn in the Catholic, Dominican tradition on which Marian Catholic was founded.
