A Message from Principal Steve Tortorello '04 On July 4, 1939, Lou Gehrig took the microphone at the culmination of a ceremony honoring him at Yankee Stadium and uttered the now famous words, “For the past two weeks, you have been reading about the bad break I got. Yet, today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the Earth.” He went on to share the blessings in his life for which he was grateful, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the stadium. For those that don’t know the story, Gehrig was diagnosed with the mysterious disease that would later bear his name. Eventually, as his health deteriorated and he neared death, he was forced to retire from the game he loved. However, in spite of all that was happening to him that he could not control, Gehrig knew that the one thing he had power over was the way he saw the world, and he chose to view things through a lens of gratitude. Watching that speech – a legendary moment to baseball and sports fans – was how we kicked off this school year at our faculty meetings in August. We used it as a launching point to discuss all of the things that we are grateful for in the Marian Catholic community, from the students whom we have been blessed to teach to the colleagues and former teachers from whom we learned so much. We committed ourselves as a faculty to a year of gratitude: a year focusing on thanking God for the blessings He has bestowed upon us and treating each day as a gift. We believe that by being actively grateful we can better serve our students and fulfill the Marian Catholic mission. As you read this issue of Marian Matters, I pray that you can do so in a similar vein of gratitude – thankful for all that being a part of Marian Catholic has given us and our loved ones. It has been an incredible journey in our 60-plus years as a community. We hope that the articles, pictures, and updates remind you of all that we have been blessed with. Thanks be to God! MANTENO VETERANS HOME

At the start of this school year, Marian Catholic introduced a new program of Christian Service. This program, directed by Mr. Jim Wiltshire, gives students the opportunity to experience service to others during their regular school day. Marian Catholic has had service programs dating back to the early years of the school 60 years ago. Alumni are familiar with such events as the Student Council-sponsored Carnival for Children, Christmas Food and Gift Drive, and Discovery in Service, as well as many other opportunities for students to give back to the community.

Why, then, did the school create this new program when students were already providing hundreds of hours of service each year? This program was provided to offer service opportunities to all students including those who for various reasons such as sports programs, after school jobs, family considerations and obligations, and lack of transportation, find it difficult to participate in extracurricular service projects. According to Principal Steve Tortorello '04, “Allowing students to perform service during the school day opens up service to many students who previously were unable to take part…. Additionally, our underclassmen are particularly limited because they cannot drive…. The Christian Service Program offers an element that is absent from other opportunities – the chance for full immersion service. One of the Dominican Pillars is Study, and the Dominicans do not intend that to mean book-learning but rather the study of our brothers and sisters in the world – who they are, what they need, and how they are just like us.”

As it is currently set up, the Christian Service Program accepts volunteer applications, which are processed by Wiltshire, and service opportunities are assigned. Each volunteer is provided with transportation and supervision. Several times each week, Wiltshire transports three or more students to a selected service site, where they usually spend most of the day. Sites include Lawrence Manor and Respond Now in Chicago Heights, St. Joseph Soup Kitchen in Hammond, and Dyer Nursing Home. In November, Wiltshire organized small groups of band students who had volunteered for the program, and they played “mini-concerts” at the Veterans Home in Manteno. Each volunteer serves for one day each year. As of November 20, 2019, 103 students had performed 255 hours of service during 38 service trips to seven different locations, according to Tortorello.

Beyond the numbers is the impact the program has on both the service recipients and the student volunteers themselves. Marian Catholic junior Taylor Trojan describes her experience, “After the amazing service opportunity, I discovered that I have a purpose in helping others. Whether it is at my school…beautifying the property, serving soup and having conversations with the homeless, or celebrating the athletic abilities of Special Olympic athletes, I and others have specific purposes in life that benefit others.” Tortorello said of the unique experience the program affords the students who participate, “The Christian Service Program provides students the opportunity to work directly with those in need and feel the real human connection between us all.” Given the results so far, he is optimistic about the future of the program. “We are excited to see how it grows and evolves. Right now it’s in its infancy. Like anything, it will adapt to what we learn and always change for the better.”

COLLEEN PEABODY '05 APPOINTED VICE PRESIDENT FOR ADVANCEMENT The New Year is a time for new beginnings, and with 2020, Marian Catholic welcomes Colleen Peabody '05 as the school’s new Vice President for Advancement. As an alumna and native of Flossmoor, Illinois, Colleen is excited to be returning to her alma mater. “I’m truly blessed to have the opportunity to apply my knowledge and experience to advance the mission of Marian Catholic, a place that I love and has been so important to my family. I look forward to contributing to the great work of the advancement team and the whole school. I also look forward to building relationships with our alumni, families, and friends, all of whom are part of what makes Marian Catholic so special – its community.” Colleen is committed to Catholic education, having earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Magna Cum Laude, from Notre Dame in 2009 with a double major in Finance and Chinese. She then received a Master’s degree in Public Service Management with a concentration in higher education from DePaul University in 2013. Colleen brings over ten years of nonprofit experience to her new role. Her career includes serving as the Business Manager of DePaul University’s Division of Student Affairs, followed by a move to UCHealth in Colorado, where she served as Decision Support Manager and Manager of Service Line Analytics. Colleen returns to Marian Catholic from the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association and Foundation, where she was Director of Strategy, Analytics, and Special Projects. “Catholic education has been transformative in my own life. Marian Catholic’s mission and standards have never changed. Our students excel not just academically but in fine arts, performing arts, athletics, leadership, and service. I believe Marian Catholic is a model of what Catholic secondary education can be for today’s students. I want to be a part of that.” During her time at Marian Catholic, Colleen was a member of the National Honor Society, cheerleading team, and varsity choir. Colleen’s brothers, Tom '07, Mike '12, and John '15, all played varsity basketball. Her parents Jane and Terry can still be spotted at basketball games. Jane has served on Marian Catholic’s Board of Directors since 2012. “My brothers and I went to rival colleges, but the one place we all cheer for is Marian Catholic,” Colleen said. “For that reason and many others, the school holds a special place in my heart. I’m excited to be home.”

Travels

WITH SPARTY “ Marian Catholic has always sought to educate the whole person – mind, body, heart, and soul. As a Dominican school that celebrates the pillars of Study and Community, it is important that we encourage our students to experience the world for themselves and learn in diverse settings. St. Dominic himself was an itinerant preacher, traveling the hills of Spain to learn the ways of the people and bring the Gospel to them in their way. Immersion trips are a fantastic way for students to learn by walking with and among diverse people around the world as evidenced by the student reflections of some of our world travelers!” - Principal Steve Tortorello '04

MARIAN MATTERS WINTER 2020

Alaska By Christina Javorka '19

During my career at Marian, I participated in trips to Costa Rica and Alaska. Looking back on high school, both experiences were most definitely highlights of my four years at Marian. My senior year was the first time a trip had been organized to Alaska. I have a personal list of places I want to go in my life, and Alaska was near the top, so I could not believe my luck when Mrs. Murzyn announced that she was organizing the excursion. Crossing an experience off my bucket list with one of my favorite teachers was the perfect graduation gift! While Marian offers an abundance of opportunities to visit locations all across the globe, I chose Alaska specifically because of my love for nature. In my opinion, nowhere can one feel the serenity of God’s presence more than in the mountains overlooking the vastness of His creation. The promise to see a multitude of wildlife in their natural habitat also drew me to this trip, a promise that was more than fulfilled. One of the most vivid memories I have from this trip was exploring a trail near our hotel one night. One of my friends on the trip asked me to take a picture of her with some wildflowers, and looking through the camera to take the picture, I realized that we were five feet away from a moose and her two calves. After creating distance between ourselves and this family of moose, we got to watch the

mother bound away with her babies. Another highlight from this trip was the day in Seward that we spent on a boat exploring the sea life near Alaska. We watched humpback whales dive in and out of the water spouting air from their blowholes. My favorite part of that day, however, was the trip to a glacier. The boat traveled through pieces of floating ice covered with resting seals before coming to a halt in front of a massive glacier. We got to see the glacier capping, and the pieces of ice breaking off and crashing into the water sounded like a thunderstorm. Marian offers numerous experiences for students to become more involved and educated citizens, both in the community and across the globe. Taking advantage of the opportunity to travel with peers is one that should not be overlooked. Even though Marian is a tight-knit community, one cannot possibly meet every student in the school, so these trips offer the opportunity to create new relationships with peers. Going to Alaska after my senior year, one would think I would have set friends already, but I created closer connections with students that I did not have the opportunity to meet during my four years at Marian. These trips are unique experiences that allow students to step outside of the bubble of Chicago Heights to actually experience biology, see the remains of history, and dive into a new culture. Travel has always been prominent in my future plans and goals, and I am extremely grateful to Marian for bringing me two steps closer to achieving that goal.

costa rica By Carrington Johnson '20

Going to Costa Rica through Marian Catholic was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me, and I will never forget it. From ziplining to cascading waterfalls to letting hummingbirds land on my arm, Costa Rica forced me to face my fear of the outdoors and widened my view of the world around me. Interestingly, these experiences were not what made the trip so memorable. The most impactful change in perspective I received from my trip to Costa Rica was when we visited a local school. Initially, we only planned to donate supplies to the students, but when they invited us in, we couldn’t resist. While we were there, we played with the children and were given tours of the school. My tour guide was named Rosita. She was in sixth grade, and I could tell she was one of the leaders. After my tour, she and her friends gathered in a circle and began to sing and rap for us. I was just overjoyed that I was able to hold full conversations with them and understand their songs, given they only spoke in Spanish. Overall, I am so grateful for the opportunity I had to learn about the Costa Rican culture, and improve my language skills.

“T he trip opened my eyes to understand that my life is pretty great, and I have so much to be thankful for.”

appalachia By Molly Brown '20

I chose to go on the trip to Appalachia last year to meet new people before my senior year at Marian Catholic. I wanted to expand the group of people that I knew and wanted to achieve my goal of knowing as many people as possible in my class before graduation. We left the day after school got out last year and drove eight hours to Harlan, Kentucky. While we were there, we immersed ourselves in the culture and work of the people. Every day we would wake up and work to fix the roof of a house for a family or person in need. We worked as a group to remove all of the shingles and fix up any pieces of the roof that needed

repair. We would work from about eight in the morning until about three in the afternoon with a lunch break. The best moments included hearing the wonderful stories of our carpenters and the families we worked for. This allowed us to step back and realize how much we have to be grateful for. Returning from this trip really inspired me to believe that I can achieve whatever I put my mind to, because if a group of 17 teenagers were able to give a family a new roof, I can do anything. The trip opened my eyes to understand that my life is pretty great, and I have so much to be thankful for.

[ TRAVELS WITH SPARTY [

“I realized that whenever I travel I should always

keep an open mind... I realized how grateful I should be for everything that I have. I more so learned humility; I learned that people can be very happy with having so little.”

china

By Andres Vazquez '21 The China trip was an amazing experience for all of us who went. Whether it was scaling the Great Wall or working with pandas, this unforgettable trip was a learning experience from day one. I’m a history buff, so being able to walk around Tiananmen Square, the Great Wall, and the Temple of Heaven moved me. In these locales we got to eat many local delicacies including sweet soup, wood ears, and Beijing duck. We were even part of a traditional Tea Ceremony in Shanghai. Continuing the trip, everyone was able to bargain in the various open-air and closed markets. In fact many of us noticed the price differences in the different regions that we traveled to.

At the beginning of this trip, I was nit-picking every detail and comparing it to the U.S. However, as time progressed and as I tried to immerse myself in the culture, I realized that whenever I travel I should always keep an open mind and try to immerse myself the best I can in the local culture. I also realized how grateful I should be for everything that I have. I more so learned humility; I learned that people can be very happy with having so little. Being able to experience the culture, people, and history of a place that has heavily influenced the world is an amazing opportunity that I hope others may also have.

COMING TO YOU IT’S THE MARIAN CATHOLIC NETWORK!

By Josh Ladner In 2012, as the world of video production and social media was quickly growing, Marian Catholic began looking for ways to take advantage of the trend as a learning opportunity. The construction of the Marian Catholic broadcast studio, connected to the Mac lab in Third Hall, was finished in 2012 as part of the “Courage to Lead” campaign that raised over $6.3 million. The soundproof room with a green screen was to be used for broadcasting. Over the years, students had been taking video production classes, but now, they would have a dedicated area of the school to shoot and edit their videos. However, at this time, the plans for the newly constructed studio were not complete. Marian Catholic had the space, but was still trying to figure out what to do with it. In the meantime, a group of faculty members took full advantage of the soundproof walls and held yoga classes in the studio in the mornings. It wasn’t until 2015, when the world of video and social media was trending upwards, that Principal Tortorello decided the school needed to use the broadcast studio to its full potential. Thanks to the 1:1 iPad program launching in 2014, every student

8

MARIAN MATTERS WINTER 2020

now had a camera they could use. The iPad initiative eventually led to the creation of a Director of Multimedia Productions position, filled by Michael Cassidy in July of 2015. Having graduated from Columbia College in Chicago with a degree in Television Production and having worked for years in the production business, Michael Cassidy was the perfect fit for the new role. Cassidy says, “Before I was even offered the job here at Marian Catholic, I had already been thinking of ideas for what I wanted to do with the studio and how I wanted students to get involved.” With the 2015-2016 school year, Cassidy began teaching Intro to TV/TV 1 and TV 2 classes, but was really laying the groundwork for a program in which students would have the opportunity to anchor a newscast or produce their own talk show. “I knew I wanted to create a student-run broadcasting network, but I had to make sure we had most of the necessary equipment and resources before taking it off the ground,” recalled Cassidy. Fast forward three years to the 2018-2019 school year at Marian Catholic and the debut of the Marian Catholic

Network (MCN). After years of acquiring new cameras and the technology to live stream sporting events on Facebook Live, MCN was born. When asked to explain the Marian Catholic Network, Michael Cassidy said, “The Marian Catholic Network is an attempt to create and capture the diversity, scope, and production quality of a major television network at the high school level.” What started out as an idea a few years ago became a reality for Cassidy and he began to recruit students to further establish the MCN through the creation of the Broadcasting Club.

While Cassidy does teach broadcasting, a student does not have to be taking one of his classes to join the Broadcasting Club and work on shows or live streams for the Marian Catholic Network. Junior KJ Tran, one of Marian Catholic’s international students, does not have Mr. Cassidy as a teacher, but decided to join the Broadcasting Club as a videographer when he saw flyers posted throughout the school. “I have been interested in working as a video editor for dance projects back in Vietnam. I signed up for the Broadcasting Team as a way to continue my interest and also to try other aspects of videography,” said KJ. “We are a small club, but do not let the size fool you. To me, being a small club means that you get to really know all of the people and really understand each person’s path. The Moderator, Mr. Cassidy, really knows what he is doing!” In contrast, senior Payton Ramsey is a student of Mr. Cassidy’s but wanted to learn even more about broadcasting outside of the classroom. “For a while now, I’ve been interested in studying film and camera work. I’ve made videos on my phone and iPad but never had the real hands-on experience of using actual production equipment. I am currently

taking the TV and film class at Marian Catholic and decided I wanted to learn more outside of the classroom. The broadcasting team gives me that opportunity.” Both the Broadcasting Club and the Marian Catholic Network have grown exponentially in just over a year. Every week, students produce shows such as Swish, a talk show about Marian Catholic basketball with hosts Tyler Van Es '20 and Kaylor Sydnor '20; The Marian Catholic News with anchors Paige Parker '20 and Taylor Trojan '21, which airs every Thursday at noon on Marian Catholic’s Facebook page; and Good Morning Marian Catholic, Marian Catholic’s first student-run talk show hosted by Paige Parker. Additionally, students direct, shoot, and announce Marian Catholic’s home athletic events that stream on Facebook Live. Working for the Marian Catholic Network forces students to get out of their comfort zones and be creative with the shows they produce. Payton Ramsey offers some advice to students who may be considering joining the Broadcasting Club, “Take the risk and don’t be afraid to fail. Failing means you’re learning. I’ve tried some really new things in broadcasting, things I never would have seen myself

doing. But when I decided to just go for it and put myself in new areas of film, I found a love for directing and producing. No, I wasn’t perfect at first. I had a lot of questions and made mistakes, but I never gave up and it paid off.” Cassidy hopes that students who join MCN and the Broadcasting Club “gain a better understanding of the complexities that go on behind the scenes of any media that they consume.” “MCN and the Broadcasting Club give each student the chance at hands-on experience in numerous positions of studio and field production. As a network-based production environment, we actively teach leadership and team building as students are allowed to craft their own programs from start to finish with myself serving to push them to attempt more with every broadcast.” This is only the beginning of the Marian Catholic Network and the Broadcasting Club at Marian Catholic. Mr. Cassidy is currently working with Principal Tortorello on developing a curriculum for a four-year broadcasting program that will begin at the freshman level.

PAIGE PARKER '20 FEELS THAT THE MARIAN CATHOLIC NETWORK HAS GIVEN HER A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY “When I was a prospective middle schooler looking to come to Marian Catholic, I did not know where I was going to fit in. At one of the open houses I attended, Principal Tortorello said something that has stuck with me for my whole high school career. He said that Marian Catholic and its faculty would find what each student excels in and make them shine. This is what makes Marian Catholic and all of its programs undeniable. Marian Catholic and the MCN have offered me opportunities that I wouldn’t have had anywhere else.”

10 MARIAN MATTERS WINTER 2020

A room full of approximately 60 high school educators attentively listened to four young Marian Catholic student preachers pray, sing, and share their personal stories this past November 5. Wearing camouflage T-shirts that proudly identified them as Dominican Preachers, these girls beautifully kicked off the 2019 DASS Convocation with one of the highest-rated moments of the three-day event! Their authentic and heartfelt words moved all of the faculty, staff, and administrators present. What kind of organization invites students to the podium to center thoughts and preparation? The Dominican Association of Secondary Schools, more affectionately known as DASS. DASS is a school membership organization that fosters the Dominican spirit between and among Dominican Catholic secondary schools in the United States. Participants from as far away as La Cañada Flintridge, CA, Houston, TX, and Bronx, NY joined together to celebrate and promote the Dominican charism. DASS has hosted national convocations, regional gatherings, and local in-service days since 2002. Marian Catholic High School is part of an elite class of almost 30 secondary schools formally sponsored by Dominican congregations/provinces of women and men in the United States. The purpose of the Dominican Association of Secondary Schools is to strengthen and support

Dominican Preachers Grace Rado '20, Haley Knueppel '20, Payton Ramsey '20, and Kaitlyn McGary '20

Catholic secondary schools in the tradition of Saint Dominic. Focusing on our common heritage in the four pillars of Prayer, Study, Community, and Service, the Dominican charism flows through the hallways, classrooms, and communities of these schools in a modern-day application of St. Dominic’s desire to seek and share Truth. Marian Catholic has long been a member and advocate of DASS. Former Marian Catholic President Sr. Mary Paul McCaughey, OP '67, served on the DASS Executive Board from 2004-2008 leaving only when she became superintendent of Catholic schools for the Archdiocese of Chicago. Current President Vince Krydynski '81 has served on the DASS Executive Board since 2016 and currently sits on the Finance and By-Laws Committees. Along with the other members of the Executive Team, he has been instrumental in guiding DASS’s efforts to hire the first lay executive director as well as reviewing finances and by-laws with an eagle eye to ensure proper adherence to the founding leaders’ vision. Individual member schools, strengthened by their participation in DASS, preach the Gospel in their specific locations and through their constituents. Goals include developing and nurturing leaders in the tradition of preaching, prayer, study, and community, as well as to collaborate with others in carrying out the preaching mission. Educators at the 2019 Convocation were challenged to reflect and align their mission with the questions, “What attracts you to continue in the Spirit of Jesus, Dominic, and Catherine?” and “What are the ‘sparks’ of the Spirit, the ‘cross-grain stories’ that call you to study, prayer, and compassionate action?” DASS members are constantly seeking paths of forwarding new expressions of the Dominican charism. The true power and purpose of DASS is relationship and connection to all in the Dominican Family, especially our students and future leaders. Rooted in the tradition of prayer, study, community, and service, these pillars of Dominican life not only form the foundation for the Dominican student’s experience but provide a blueprint for all to live a life of seeking Truth, or Veritas.

Celebrating VOCATION!

By Allen Marazas '64

Around the time Marian Catholic welcomed its first classes of students, Sister Agnes Ann Pisel, OP, made her religious profession in the Dominican Order of Preachers. Sixty years is a long time for anything, but it is remarkable for a vocation serving God! On September 18, 2019, a Mass of Thanksgiving was offered for Sister Agnes Ann to celebrate and thank God for her 60 years of service to Him and her communities. A reception in the convent followed the Mass. Those gathered at Mass and the reception reflected the communities Sister has served during the last 60 years. Sisters from the Marian Catholic Convent and the Dominican Springfield Mother House were present, as well as members of her family, who braved inclement weather to attend the celebration. Many others also gathered to commemorate Sister Agnes Ann’s religious life, including present and former Marian Catholic teachers and staff, current and former students, parents, and many friends. Reflecting on her long vocation, Sister noted that she has been inspired along the way by the Dominican Sisters, her family, her students and their parents, and those to whom she has ministered. Although Sister Agnes Ann could have “retired” and returned to the Mother House in Springfield long ago, she has chosen to remain at Marian Catholic. “I loved my years teaching Theology,” said Sister. “I love Marian and wanted to remain a part of it. My recent ministry in the Bracha Center and visiting the homebound here remain important to me. I remained in good health, so I wanted to continue to work here.”

Sister Agnes Ann Pisel, OP, offered this reflection on her Faith, “God is awesome and beyond our ability to grasp who or what God is…. I think that God inspires us every day. We just have to be aware. God cares for us, the good and the bad alike. God always loves us even when we might turn away or not notice God’s presence in our lives.” We are all forever grateful for Sister Agnes Ann’s presence in our lives.

EVERY STUDENT, EVERY DAY By Fiona Keating '20 and Samuel Kirchner '21

On the very first day of school, Principal Tortorello set out to actively cultivate a mindset of gratitude this school year amongst the students, faculty, and staff. November is annually celebrated as a month of gratitude. Throughout November we remember how much we have to be grateful for. This year at Marian Catholic we are focusing on being grateful for all the gifts that God has given us.

This year’s Homecoming week was once again a success! Our Spartans defeated DePaul College Prep, Spirit Week was a hit, and the dance was a blast! To commemorate this year’s theme, Homecoming “Around the Globe,” students decorated the halls as different continents to celebrate. At the dance, Grace Rado '20 and Uchechukwu Onyeukwu '20 were crowned Homecoming Queen and King! A big thanks to Student Council for all the work they did to make Homecoming great!

[ EVERY STUDENT, EVERY DAY [

Marian Catholic’s Diversity Council kicked off celebrations of Hispanic Heritage Month with an ofrenda (altar) open to students and faculty to commemorate their lost loved ones and to celebrate Dia De Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, as well as a trip to the National Mexican Heritage Museum in Chicago!

Each semester, Sister Mary Jo Sobieck, OP, takes Marian Catholic students on a service trip to Chicago. Students take food, blankets, and clothes to share with the homeless. They spend the whole day sharing the love of God and helping the less fortunate. This is just one of the many opportunities students have to share and grow in their faith at Marian Catholic.

Marian Catholic High School and The Illinois Association for College Admission Counseling, in conjunction with Bloom High School, Bloom Trail High School, Rich Central High School, Rich East High School, and Rich South High School, hosted a college fair on October 8, 2019 in the West Gym. Over 130 universities and colleges such as University of Notre Dame, Northwestern, University of Alabama, Penn State, and Michigan attended the fair. Students were encouraged to register beforehand to receive a bar code that college representatives could scan so that students didn’t have to complete an inquiry card. Almost 500 students from 19 different high schools registered.

A huge congratulations to Erik Curtis '20, who received a perfect score of 36 on his ACT, an honor earned by only around two-tenths of one percent of students. The Marian Catholic community celebrates with him and wishes him well in his future academic endeavors. We can’t wait to see where this achievement takes him!

On November 21 a group of Marian Catholic students left for Indianapolis to go to the National Catholic Youth Conference. Students worshipped with other Catholic students from around the country and shared their faith with each other.

An Inspirational Gift Until recently, Marian Catholic’s Main Hall was, like most others, lined with metal lockers. Over the past year, a transformation took place with the addition of four beautiful stained glass windows gifted to the school by the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Loretto Sisters).

Founded in Belgium in 1609, the Loretto Sisters are an international religious order dedicated to serving God in educational, pastoral, and social ministries, with particular interest in women, children, and the marginalized. The American Province of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary established its Motherhouse in Chicago’s western suburb of Wheaton, Illinois in 1946. Their Queen of Rosary Chapel originally featured twelve stained glass windows, all of which depicted a Marian theme.

Due to an aging and declining number of sisters, the Motherhouse closed in 2017, and the property was sold to finance the elder care of its membership. Prior to demolition of the Motherhouse, the Sisters were able to save the windows and graciously donated four of them to Marian Catholic High School. Created in Germany by an unknown artist, the windows celebrate Marian Catholic’s tradition as a Catholic High School in the Dominican tradition.

The first set of windows depicts the story of the finding of Jesus in the Temple recorded in the Gospel of Luke 2:42-51. As followers of Jesus, and as preachers like Dominic, each of us is called to teach the Good News of the Gospel through words of truth and acts of justice. Jesus, who began his ministry of teaching at the age of twelve, reminds us that each member of the Marian Catholic High School Community, regardless of age, is called to be actively engaged in preaching the Truth of God’s enduring love. The second set of windows depict St. Dominic de Guzman and St. Catherine of Sienna receiving the Rosary from the Blessed Mother, the patroness of Marian Catholic, with the Infant Jesus in her arms. As followers of Dominic and Catherine, members of the Marian Catholic Community are called to be in loving communion with our God that we might discern the Truth and proclaim it through lives of Christian service. We are very grateful the Sisters of Loretto blessed us with this beautiful legacy gift and pray the windows are an inspiration to all who walk the halls of Marian Catholic.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

By Kevin Kelly '80

After losing a slew of outstanding athletes to graduation, the Marian Catholic women’s volleyball program was ticketed for a rebuilding season – but the Spartans turned it into reloading. Instead of a gradual rebuild, Marian compiled a stellar 25-11 campaign. It wasn’t accomplished against mediocre competition, as the East Suburban Catholic Conference saw four (half) of its teams claim trophies at the IHSA Class 3A/4A state tournaments. Along with an IHSA Regional crown, the Spartans claimed plenty of hardware of their own with a third-place finish at the Rich East Invite, and second place in the Lincoln-Way Central Tourney.

Tajheem Lawson '21

While postseason success, hardware, and program improvement were the themes of many Marian Catholic fall sports, one of the top highlights was the return of postseason football for the first time since 2010. Along with a visit back to the Chicagoland Prep Bowl, Marian Catholic’s football squad posted a 5-4 regular-season mark to qualify for the IHSA playoffs for the first time in nine years. With a 3-0 ledger in the new CCL-ESCC Red Division, the Spartans captured a conference championship for the first time since 1994. “We have created a culture of responsibility, accountability, and ownership,” explained secondyear head coach alumnus Erick Middleton '98. “It’s not only a rebuilding of the football program, but a rebranding of the program as well. “We do not believe in luck – hard work plus opportunity equals success, so we have now created a successful culture.” While the Spartans were unable to advance in the IHSA playoffs and Prep Bowl, the 5-6 final record was the top mark since 2010. For the in-season success, Marian copped eight spots on the CCL-ESCC Red All-Division team and Middleton earned the Dave Mattio Coach of the Year honor for the Red Division. With the new CCL-ESCC merger entering its second year next fall and eyeing more good news (16 of 24 teams qualified for the IHSA playoffs), the Spartans are also looking forward to building on a successful campaign. “The bar has been set by our 2019 team and we plan to carry that momentum into the future of this program,” Middleton said. “With the type of talent we see on our schedule, players understand that they have to be bigger and stronger if they want to be able to compete at a high level week in and out.”

MEN’S SOCCER

WOMEN’S TENNIS State-ly ventures highlighted the women’s tennis squad, as juniors Lilli Hansen and Karina Bonilla qualified for the IHSA state tournament through the Marian Catholic Sectional. As a team, the Spartans posted an impressive 11-1 mark this fall in non-conference action.

Behind ESCC Coach of the Year Diego Herrera, the men’s soccer program continued a similar turnaround with the best record (10-14-1) since the 2014 season. Along with a fourth-place finish in the New Berlin (Wisconsin) Invite, the Spartans advanced to the Rich East IHSA Class 2A regional finals.

CROSS COUNTRY

MEN’S GOLF The entire men’s golf team qualified for sectional play. Freshman Casey Taylor earned third place overall, leading the Spartans to a secondplace finish in the Marian Catholic IHSA 2A Regional at Calumet Country Club. The Spartans also hosted their own invite this fall at Calumet, notching a third-place team finish.

Marian Catholic cross country teams logged big miles in postseason play, as both the men’s and women’s teams captured third-place finishes in the LaSalle-Peru Regional to earn Bloomington Sectional team berths. Led by senior Samantha Barrett, Marian Catholic earned three of the top four women’s spots at LaSalle-Peru, while senior Keagan Morgan led the men in regional action with a seventh-place finish.

A friend of all Marian Catholic athletic programs and the mother of football coach Erick Middleton '98, Val Middleton lost a long and courageous battle with cancer in late October. Along with husband Drew, a Marian Catholic Hall of Famer, Val managed the Spartan concession stands and hosted awards nights for many years. “In addition to providing outstanding refreshments for Marian Catholic visitors – ‘the best popcorn in the state,’ according to Marian Catholic announcer Mike Blais – Val provided tender, loving care to anything she did at Marian Catholic,” according to Athletic Director Kevin Kelly '80. “Many times with volunteer hours, Val provided an example of work ethic and hospitality that was unmatched throughout the land. “Her name will live on, as the Marian Catholic concession stands have been named the Val Middleton Family Concession Stands. However, she will also live on through her outstanding example and familiar smile.”

30th Annual

ENDOWMENT GOLF CLASSIC Idlewild Country Club was the site of the 30th installment of Marian Catholic’s Endowment Golf Classic held on Monday, September 9. A blessing led by Sister Mary Jo Sobieck, OP, preceded the shotgun start for 96 enthusiastic golfers. Although rain poured down just moments prior, Sister Mary Jo was hopeful it would subside prior to start of play. Prayers were answered as the rain diminished and the sun shined down on all of our gracious supporters the rest of the day. Following play, 130 guests had the opportunity to bid on numerous silent auction items such as Notre Dame tickets, portrait sessions, and foursomes at Olympia Fields Country Club, Idlewild, and Flossmoor Country Club. At dinner, student speaker and Endowment Classic Scholarship recipient Oluwakemi Johnson '20 of Park Forest, delivered a powerful speech on how Marian Catholic has shaped who she is and who she aspires to be. “The main reason I chose Marian? I wanted to be challenged academically. There’s nothing wrong with public school, but I knew that I wanted to push myself harder and further... and I knew that Marian is the place to do just that.” Ultimately, the Endowment Golf Classic raised more than $108,000 in support of Marian Catholic’s Scholars with a Soul. Be sure to save the date for Marian Catholic’s 31st Annual Endowment Golf Classic to be held Monday, September 14, 2020 at Idlewild Country Club. For more information visit www.bit.ly/mchsegc.

The Flamini Foundation recently celebrated its 10th anniversary with a Roaring ’20s event at Balagio Ristorante in Homewood. The Flamini Foundation began at the Christmas holidays in 2004. The family decided not to purchase gifts for each other that year, so Theresa (Rocha '70) Flamini, her husband Jim, and their three children and their spouses – Jim Flamini '89 and wife Julie (Katula '90) Flamini; Michelle Flamini '95; and Marc Flamini '95 and wife Dana (Amos '95) Flamini – instead purchased toys for hospitalized children. The tradition spread to family and friends doing the same, and in 2009, the Foundation incorporated as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Now, the Flamini Foundation provides both toys and “comfort bags,” which are filled with essential items a parent staying with a child in the hospital may not have time to pack in an emergency. The bags are also distributed to expectant moms placed on medical bed rest and parents who are experiencing extensive stays with their newborns in the Neonatal Intensive Care Units. The toys and comfort bags are distributed to hospitals in Northwest Indiana pediatric units, Children’s Hospitals, and Ronald McDonald Houses in the Chicagoland area.

Kea (Meyers) Duggan

ALUMNI NOTES

[

1994

By Brendan Diamond Kea (Meyers '94) Duggan has made a career out of refusing to be defined. “I want to be able to say that I lived fully,” she explains. A very involved child, Kea found early on that having a variety of experiences informed many different conversations. However, she could never have predicted the trajectory her life would take. After the volleyball star graduated from Marian Catholic in 1994, Kea was certain of what she wanted to do: advertising or marketing. All the messages she heard growing up were that she should walk a specific path, from college to career. It never occurred to her at that time that things could be different – until a few years later. “I was sitting in an Irish pub with my dad,” she recalls. “Dad said, ‘Maybe you need to go into business for yourself; you’ve never liked working for other people.” When he said this, a freeing feeling came over her, along with a sense of urgency. She had to ask herself, “What do I want to do?” While contemplating this question, she parlayed her interest in entrepreneurship and her love of dogs into opening a pet sitting and dog walking business. Though she enjoyed the business, it didn’t quite give her the excitement she so desired. “To be honest, it was a little lonely, talking to animals all day,” she remembers. “I was also kind of bored – I needed to be in a place where I interacted with people.” She decided to get out of her comfort zone by doing something drastic: she moved to Los Angeles and took a job with Sony Pictures. While at Sony, her future first began to come into view, though it took yet another left-turn to get her there. She got involved with the Los Angeles Conservation Corps, an environmentally-focused group serving underserved youths ages 14 to 24 to give them the opportunity to succeed. Many of the young people involved in the Corps have been incarcerated, and a good number of them have been through the California foster system. The Corps gives them a second chance, which is what attracted Kea to the group. “It helped change my perceptions,” she says. After being laid off from Sony, Kea sent out numerous job applications and went to many networking coffee hours. When a Marketing Director position with the L.A. Conservation Corps opened up, she jumped at the opportunity and was hired. She loved helping promote the work of young people as they worked to overcome issues of street violence, incarceration, and homelessness, among the many issues with which they dealt. Still, she felt something was missing from her life. Kea began thinking over all her experiences and what she could offer. “I’ve always thrived on having a full calendar,” she says, adding, “I don’t want to be in a box.” She knew she wanted to help

Kea with Sr. Mary Jo Sobieck, OP at the ESPYS

others – something she loved doing at the L.A. Conservation Corps. She also was excited by the possibility of working for herself again. As she began to dedicate time toward figuring out what was missing and what she wanted to do next, she thought about a concept that a friend previously introduced to her – becoming a life coach. In 2016, Kea started her coaching certification program and knew instantly this was what she wanted to do. She graduated as a Certified Professional Coach in May 2017 and began her coaching career right away, while still working full-time at the Corps. But by April 2018, the constant work and attempts to hold down two full-time jobs took its toll. “One morning while writing a simple email,” she remembers, “I began to experience numbness on the left side of my face, head and arm. I was terrified. Initial signs pointed to a stroke, but as it turned out, it was a panic attack. [...] After extensive conversations with my doctor, who informed me I was doing way too much for one person to handle, he advised me to get my stress under control ASAP[.]” Deciding to take her fate into her own hands, Kea left her job at the Corps shortly thereafter and made the “spine-chilling yet exciting” decision to strike out on her own as a Life Coach. Now, she works with mostly professional women between their late 30s to early 60s, helping them when they don’t know where to go next in their careers. “I’m helping those who are in the position I was in,” she explains. Kea’s unconventional path serves as a perfect example of what you can do when you really find your calling. “It’s okay to change your mind,” she says. “Never let what other people might say about you stop you from doing what you want to do.” She also says she has kept a lot of what she learned at Marian Catholic as a part of her career. One of those lessons she learned from Mr. Leo Cleary, a Social Studies teacher Kea had for U.S. History: “Always have a paper trail,” she recalls, laughing. “That has served me well in business.” Marian Catholic left an indelible mark on Kea. “My best friends are from Marian Catholic High School,” she says. “Our class is still so close and connected. I carry that with me.”

2018-2019

Financial Summary Dear Members of the Marian Catholic Community, We live in a world of constant change that tends to create concern about the unpredictability of future events. In the midst of this generalized uncertainty, you are reading this publication with full confidence that each of us can shape the future of Marian Catholic High School. It is with gratitude that I thank you for your outreach, your prayers and your volunteer hours that bring the light of our school to others as you support our events with your time, treasure, and talent. The school remains strong and vibrant. Our enrollment has stabilized, the opportunities we offer our students are exceptional, our students are very well prepared in ALL facets for the next step in their personal journey, and we have no debt. Because of you, we are seeing growth in new areas. Over the past couple years, we have witnessed an increase in people wanting to establish scholarships, adding Marian Catholic to their estate plans, and an increased willingness to support our school. The Sister Simeon Fund, which supports families facing such dire financial situations that they would be forced to remove their children from Marian Catholic, has seen incredible growth. One of the greatest rewards of my position is receiving a call from a benefactor who wants to make an immediate impact on the life of a child by making a donation to insure that they remain at Marian Catholic, then relaying to the parent that their prayers have been answered. The emotions run high, tears are shed, blessings exchanged, and the trajectory of a young life is changed forever. Every year, it costs a bit more to run the school. Every year more of our families find it a bit more difficult to afford the quality Dominican, Catholic education we offer. This academic year, Marian Catholic awarded approximately $1.5 million in scholarships and tuition assistance. While that figure is impressive, I know that it covers approximately one-third of the proven need of our families. As Dominicans, we are called to serve those living on the margins of society – including those seeking a better education for their children. With your generous support, we are able to answer the call for most but I could use more help to more fully support everyone in need. For sixty-one years, Marian Catholic has been blessed by the direction and support of the Dominican Sisters of Springfield, very good families, wonderful students, dedicated faculty and staff, and generous supporters who embrace the mission of the school. For these and all the blessings bestowed upon Marian Catholic, I am grateful. In the Spirit of St. Dominic,

Vince Krydynski '81 President

Marian Catholic High School has built an educational foundation based on the guiding principles of the Roman Catholic Church and the tremendous support of our Dominican Sisters. For sixty years our halls were filled with Sisters who taught us, guided us and assisted us by making our educational experience here a great one – leading us to careers, colleges, families and communities. Even though the number of Sisters on campus has lessened significantly over the years, we hold their principles high and appreciate how they provided for us. The key phrase from Marian Catholic’s strategic plan is Every Student, Every Day. Marian Catholic is dedicated to ensuring all of its students have similar opportunities to succeed by providing an educational experience that meets every student’s individual needs and interests, every day. While this year’s vision seems simple, it requires, as it has every year, considerable resources. What is not commonly understood is that tuition alone does not support and maintain the school – here or at any other privately funded high school or college. It has been that way since the beginning of Marian Catholic. By participating in the Marian Fund each and every year, you keep the great teachers here. You sustain the great academic, athletic, and fine arts programs. You help maintain and improve our facilities. All of which ensure we can continue to serve Every Student, Every Day. In the spirit of St. Dominic and in memory and support of the Dominican Sisters, please make your gift to the Marian Fund today! Visit marianchs.com/apps/pages/marian-fund.
