LIVING HOUSE
DI/VIDE
The project involved the creation of a three bedroom house as an addition of a heritage listed house. The DI/VIDE House in one take on the renovation and upgrades to the original 4 MacArthur Place North site. The site itself is really small and telescopic, facing the lush MacArthur Square garden on the south. The owner’s brief is that the house should be able to accomodate the needs and functions for several different people in the course of a 30-year ownership. The new home needs to retain the existing frontal part of the house due to the heritage overlay on the site. The existing laneway at the rear of the house provides an opportunity for activation and an extension of the rear garden. The overall shape of the house needs to adorn and respect the surrounding atmosphere and characteristics of the Carlton suburb and prevent the neighbors from being overshadowed. The house was covered in timber cladding to disguised itself into the classical Carlton atmosphere, and as ELGIN STREET weathering takes effect on the timber, the then stark two-floor addition will seamlessly be integrated into the surroundings.

The design needs to respect the surrounding Carlton character and the heritage overlay of the frontal facade.
Roof design needs to allow sunlight penetration to the neighboring open spaces.
Glass windows and doors, the lightcourt and the overall shape of the house allows the utilisation of the northeast sun to penetrate even the frontal parts of the house.
Levels of privacy increases deeper into the house, starting from the public living room to the private family room and residence.
The stairs and the toilet forms the central part of the house as the divider of the house, with an addition of a sliding door to further segregate the house in the 30 year lifespan.
The house needs to accomodate 30 years of user changes. To increase efficiency during each change of users, the transformative space has been zoned.

The design for the overall shape tries to stay away from the ‘central courtyard’ typology as a way of creating a central light penetration source. The central courtyard typology was deemed ineffective and inefficient for such a small and long site that the rear part of the house will in turn eclipse the courtyard it self. This resulted in the house functions being crammed to the frontal part of the house as much as possible, allowing a big courtyard for the client’s family to play on and relax while maximizing the northern sun cycle.

The secondary personal family room and dining interacts with the rear garden, in which the courtyard can be considered an extension of the family area. The overhang on first floor acts as a shading system to shade the decking and dining areas from the hot summer sun, althought it will still allow the winter sun to penetrate the interiors.

Timber Cladding after approximately 5 years
The timber cladding acts as a privacy and weather screen for the house. It does not allow for complete overseeing of the neighbors’ private open spaces and into the house itself. Additionally, the timber cladding will camouflaged the house and integrates it to the surrounding character, hiding the house in plain sight due to weathering.
The interior of the house used mainly concrete, marble, and plasterboard, in which the gray colour was chosen. The gray colour integrates well with the timber colour and texture and is a timeless defining colour for modern homes. The concrete floor acts as thermal mass to create a comfortable sense of home.

STUDIO GAMMA + WATER LIVING NEIGHBOURHOOD [ILLUSTRIOUS] ILLUSTRIOUS MARIO YOHANES RINALDY - 917889
LEADER: SARAH KAHN TheSTUDIO word Illustrious refers to its archaic meaning of “to shine bright”, in which all the SEMESTER 2 — 2018 apartment units are angled in such a way to maximise the northeastern sunlight. It also refers to “well known” and “admired for past achievements”, in which it can be related to the previous project’s success.
The project aims to increase the density of the MacArthur Place North corner, spanning the area of four site entitlements. The client’s brief requires the densification and diversification of residents in the area, as well as communal and commercial facilities for the residents to use. The Illustrious apartment and townhouse adds a stark and communal addition to the character of the area. Using the main concept of a village surrounding a central courtyard, the main green open space and the open ground floor creates massive room for circulation. Compliance with RESCode allows for multipurpose ground floor car parking space as well as avoidance on overshadowing the neighbours. Louvers, claddings, and blades will still remain as its primary feature, allowing a smooth transition on the MacArthur-Canning street corner as well as creating a threshold between the private interior and the public outdoor.

Sun shadow study allows for the optimal areas to be assigned as communal and residential spaces.
Placing the communal green space at the rear allows for the extension of the courtyard into the laneway, thus activating it.
The apartment form and units are angled to maximise the northeastern sunlight penetration, as well as allowing the neighbors to get sunlight as well.
The creation of a secondary laneway acts to distanced the building form from a one-big-block typology. The laneway acts as an access point to MacArthur Square and an extension of the student apartment communal space
The site accomodates different types of users from various different backgrounds, from students to families. The shared decking and balconies acts as an extension of a unit’s living room.
The louvers, blades and perforated panels allows for the smooth transition between the public and the private. The high density family units perforated panels are adjustable, although the student accomodation ones are fixed to prevent suicide.

The family units has access to a multipurpose room, in which it can be turned into a car park/garage. This was done to comply with RESCode on the requirement of having a car park on a three story residential. However, as the usage of cars are minimal with the advent of public transportation and cycling, the space can be used and transformed into other functions, such as an office/study space, workshop, or even a secondary living or residential area.

The student accomodation building and the laneway were chosen to be highlighted and focused as it has the most qualities of communal and diversed living. The site covered is 2 and 4 MacArthur Place North. The student accomodation residential units are all studios except one two-bedroom unit at the top floor. Each studio has its own kitchen and ensuite, perfect for students of design D D major, or who just want privacy. The building has a shared communal space, lounge, and laundry at the ground floor. This communal space blends with the exterior environment as it was surrounded by adjustable sliding glass doors. The communal space was then seamlessly extended towards the laneway, where the bicycle parking and a pop up container cafe could have been placed, as well as the corner of MacArthur Place North and Canning Street. This opens up the view of the corner, as well as smoothen the corner transition allowing for people approaching the corner to see each other without being obstructed by a highlighted iconic corner. F

DETAILS The main feature of the structure is its louvers covered facade on the student accomodation section. The louvers were attached in different angles and specifications depending on the function of the interior rooms. Louvers of personal spaces such as bathrooms extends much more than louvers of study spaces. The louvers acts as a privacy screen to block the view from the public Canning Street into the accomodation units. Additionally, the louvers are fixed and attached at a small spacing, and coupled with a fixed glass curtain wall, prevents the students from commiting suicide.
