Zwelinzima Vavi soon to be history? Zwelinzima Vavi’s association with the biggest union federation in the country, Cosatu, is likely to be history soon if the central executive committee (CEC) of the federation has its way. Despite having expelled him from the union on Monday he is technically still its gen eral secretary until its national congress approves his dismisal. Reading the central execu tive committee’s resolution to expel Vavi on Monday Cosatu’s deputy general secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali said: ‘Vavi violated the code of conduct on the use of property, assets and resources as well as discipline.’ He also said Vavi continues to divide unions and uses Cosatu resources to service Numsa, an expelled Cosatu union. Ntshalintshali said that Vavi failed or refused to attend meetings, he failed to obtain leave of absence for his nonat tendance of CEC meetings. ‘By Vavi failing to attend special CEC to explain his conduct, he waived his right to put his side of the story,’ Ntshalintshali read. He cited quotes from Vavi’s media briefing on Sunday when he said he would refuse to attend meetings. Ntshalintshali said all units have been instructed to stop using ‘our media platform to pro file Cde Zwelinzima Vavi’. Meanwhile the Liberated Metalworkers Union of SA (Limusa) has been accepted as a new Cosatu affiliate, the trade union federation said yesterday. ‘The [central executive committee] meeting reaffirmed its satisfaction that Limusa satisfied all the constitutional requirements of the Cosatu constitution and therefore accepted Limusa as a new Cosatu affiliate,’ Congress of SA Trade Unions deputy general secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali told reporters in Johannesburg.

AY your outstanding debts or face the music. That’s the message the Msunduzi Municipality is passing on to residents following the recent tabling of the R4.1 billion draft budget for the 2015/2016 financial year. Addressing an Executive Committee (Exco) meeting Msunduzi’s chief financial officer Nelisiwe Ngcobo said the municipality is working with three companies for its debt collection. “Every week the municipal manager looks at the list of debtors and we have started with disconnections. We are targeting big businesses who owe us money,” said Ngcobo. She said the municipality has communicated with government departments who still owe the municipality millions, requesting them to pay. They have selected 20 businesses, residents and government departments who owe the most, she said. Presenting the 2015/20165 draft budget Msunduzi’s process manager for income Sifiso Khozasaidthatmanagingthecashflowandthe long-termfinancialrecoveryplanofthemunicipality is critical. The municipality’s projected 2015/2016 tariffs are 12.28% for electricity, 8.2% increase for water and 5.8% for rates, sanitation and

refuse, respectively. “All tariffs show a 5.8% increase, except for electricity and water. We are directed by Circular 74 of the Treasury Department,” said Khoza. He said they still need to finalise tariffs with the National Energy Regulator (Nersa) and Umgeni and consult the South African Local Government Association (Salga) concerning the final approval of sanitation increases. The estimated budget for new municipal posts is R60 million. Some of the priorities the municipality will focus on include curbing electricity and water loss, replacing old infrastructure, enrolling the smart-meteringsystem,eliminatingwaterand electricitytheft, eliminatingmeterestimations, increasing revenue collections and a debtors’ book. A concern was highlighted about unspent grants. “We are a bit concerned because we haven’t reached the 70% we targeted for this month. “The current unspent grant is R273 million and the target is to be 100% by the end of the financial year.” The draft budget will be taken to full council and after council approves it, they will have 21 days to advertise for public comment and scrutiny before it can be approved.

Race to honour struggle heroes

OMMEMORATING 54 years since 1 400 delegates from across Africa hosted an All-In Africa Conference in Pietermaritzburg, the Greater Edendale Athletics Club on Thursday launched the All-In Africa Marathon. The conference, which saw many delegates walking from the Edendale YMCA to the Arya Samai hall in Imbali, was aimed at enforcing a new non-racial and democratic society. The late former president Nelson Mandela was the guest speaker at the conference 54 years ago. Speaking at the Georgetown Library on Thursday, project ambassador Hitler Mbambo said this was an historic conference as it saw residents, including the Indian community, opening up their houses for delegates to live in.

He said: “The highlight happened when the conference had to be moved from the Edendale YMCA to the local health office, known as Kwa- Poyinandi, as police under the apartheid regime had already been tipped off. “When the delegates moved to this office they found the same thing had happened. “The Indian community played a huge role as they opened up their hall at Imbali for the conference. “There was no transport and delegates had to walk from Edendale to the Imbali hall. “The hall accommodated only 400 people, but that day 1 400 delegates had to fit in.” Oneofthepeoplewhoattendedthe conference, renowned photographer Shan Pillay said: “I feel honoured to have been part of the historic day. “We waited for the whole day, and Mandela arrived at midnight. freedomtheyattainedforthecountry. The race will take place on 13 September and will be divided into three distances - 10km, 21km and 56km - which will all go through the historical sites of the conference. Vusi Duma from the Greater Eden-

dale Athletic Club said the race will be on a heritage route as it is not only aimedattracing Mandela’sfootsteps, but also honours the role played by the Indian community in bringing about societal change.

>>news@myecho.co.za AS schools break for the first term today, the KZN Department of Education reminds pupils to behave so they are ready when schools reopen on 13 April. “Holidays or no holidays, education is still important. This is the time for pupils to relax, but they should remember that their education comes first. They should behave in such a way that they return in one piece for the second term. They should do so for the sake of their parents, their schools, teachers and their future,” said the KZN Department of Education spokesperson Sihle Mlotshwa. Despite the “group copying scandal” which was in the spotlight at the beginning of the year, Mlotshwa said that as a department their focus is to make sure that matric pupils prepare themselves well ahead of the final examinations and obtain good marks. “With group copying, we started on a back foot. As time went by we picked ourselves up and launched Operation Bounce Back aimed at improving our performance. On our part the first quarter has been hard work,” said Mlotshwa. In January, after the release of matric results, the national Department of Education discovered that group copying had occurred in various provinces, including KZN.

KZN has approved the establishment of four technology parks through the provincial growth development strategy. The technology hub project is based on the integration of institution, enterprise and business fraternities with the aim of generating innovation. The aim of the technology hub is the commercialisation of breakthrough concepts through which products, processes, strategies and services are created for job opportunities and wealth generation.

NORTHDALE Hospital’s plan to cut its morning visiting hours has been met with mixed emotions from Pieterma ritzburg residents. As from today the hospital will do away with the visiting hour from 10am to 11am. Nomusa Ngcobo of Northdale said that the sudden change will affect her schedule as she normally takes her morning tea time to visit loved ones at the hospital. “This means I will have to speak to my supervisor and re quest the afternoon vi sitinghour.Itisbetterto come in the morning because there is no traffic congestion. Travelling from town will be a bit of a mis sion,” she said. Mary Padayachee said that she is happy the hospital will be dedicating more time to its patients. “The patients come first, no matter what. Not everyone will like the change, but it is for the better.” Sol Sivaprasad also echoed Padayachee’s sentiments. “Iftherearemorevi siting hours this means the nurses and doctors will take longer tea Cell: 060 507 2172 breaks. WITH excavations in Pietermaritzburg, the producer of fibre infrastructure Dark Fibres Africa (DFA) said it has hired approximately 120 staff members from three civil subcontractors. However, DFA spokesperson and executive of brand and communications at DFA, Tshego Ditshego, said that the numbers of people employed will vary. DFA has, since inception, had a presence in Durban however, it will not be opening an office in Pietermaritzburg. “DFA will be constructing a fibre optic-based telecommunicationnetworkintheareato serve the needs of its customers. “Our customers range from government entities to private sector companies,” he said. It was reported that last year the South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal ruled in favour of DFA to construct a fibre optic-based telecommunication network in the city. This after the Msunduzi Municipality filed a case with the Pietermaritzburg High

ROMPTED by research that one in every 10 school girls in Africa miss classes every month due their menstrual cycle because some cannot afford sanitary towels, a group of young women from the city have started an organisation to assist young girls. The group, known as Sinegy Cares, was established by three young women from Sweetwaters and Imbali - Sne Shezi (26), Neli Mncube-Ndlela (33) and Gugu Mahlaba (29) in January. The young women, who use their personal money as they don’t have other funds, visit underprivileged schools and speak to principals about how they can be of help to young school girls. Their first project was at Malala Primary in Snathing. Speaking to Echo Shezi said: “The idea came to me last year when a young girl in the community approached me and asked if I

would assist her with sanitary towels, as her parents could not afford them. “We then did some research and luckily one of us is a teacher and she has seen cases where pupils were using cloths as sanitary towels. “Since we all wanted to plough back to the community, we thought this would be the best way to help our community. “We target rural schools, and other than providing sanitary towels we talk to them about puberty and how to take care of themselves. “We also offer career guidance on available opportunities that were predominantly for males.” She said they are hoping to expand the project to male children, where they will offer career guidance and teach them about the importance of hygiene. “We can’t be sitting and be waiting for the government to do everything for us. The little that you have can make a huge difference in someone’s life,” said Shezi.

Msunduzi to open 24hour traffic law enforcement stations in city

LLEGAL drag racers and traffic offenders beware. Stung by criticism over the lack of traffic and other law enforcement, theMsunduziMunicipalityistoclamp down on lawlessness in Pietermaritzburg. A report detailing the opening of 24-hour traffic law enforcement stationsacrossthecitywastabledduring a recent Executive Committee (Exco) meeting. The municipality plans to build the traffic stations in all areas under its jurisdiction.Thefirsttwowillbeinthe CBD and northern suburbs. Provisions are also being made to increase the operating budget to R2,5 million for the night shift and standby allowances for staff. Reckless and negligent driving, and the illegal parking of heavy-duty vehicles in the municipal district are prime targets of the plan, which has been in the pipeline since 2013. AreporttabledatExcosaidthecity had grown over the past three years with young people moving here for the nightlife and education opportunities. “While the above is applauded, the city on the other hand is experiencing almost a 30% increase in its maintenanceandrepairsbudget, particularly on the replacement of traffic lights, crash barriers, electricity poles [from] motor vehicle accidents predominantly at night,” it said. Msunduzi head of traffic, Kwenza Khumalo, said there was a need for a 24-hour policing initiative. “The city’s night life is growing,

andbecauseofthatyoufindthatthere are many illegal businesses that are mushrooming. There are illegal meteredtaxisandpeoplearefryingchips to sell on all corners at night. “You find that what was once a fabric shop is now a tavern that operatesillegallyoncertaindaysatcertain times,” Khumalo said. “People do all this because they know that in Pietermaritzburg there is no law enforcement. “There is a traffic light in College Road that is always knocked down on Monday. Our budget to fix the infrastructure is increasing - that is a sign of a problem.” Khumalosaidacentralstationhad already been opened at Publicity House, operating from 6am to 6pm for now. They would identify other buildings where officers would be based. Hesaidthefull24-hourshiftwould begin around July once the costs had been factored into the new financial year. Khumalo said they were looking to recruit more staff, but would start the initiative with the staff on hand. “We cannot wait to have a full complementofstaff. Ifwewaitanylonger, by the time we start the buildings would have been stolen and there will be drag racing in all the streets of Pietermaritzburg.” Northdale councillor Rooksana Ahmed said the council was losing money because of traffic violations. “IntheNorthdalearea, thereisjust a general violation of the municipal

Sources in the drag-racing community said they would “wait and see”. “Drag racing is very common in the Northdale area. It takes place twice a week … it might work, it

ENCOURAGING young people to tap into the scarce skills sector, a group of four people from the city have started an organisation in a bid to push young people to excel in manufacturing and construction. NOKULUNGA NGOBESE spoke to them. Founded this year, UMzansi Youth In Manufacturing & Construction aims to respond to the government’s call to empower young people and to curb unemployment. Speaking to Echo, director Ndu Zuma said the organisation is aimed at increasing the level of participation from young people in terms of harnessing opportunities. “Wearerespondingtothegovernment’scall to infrastructure programmes. There are opportunitiesprovidedbythegovernmentinconstruction and manufacturing, but young people cannot tap into them because they are not structured.Despitegovernmenthavingitsown databaseofunemployedpeopleintheindustry, we want to have our own database. This will enable us to keep track of those who have been used in the government’s various infrastructure programmes. We want to also serve as a link between the government and unemployed youth. “There are students at tertiary institutions

who cannot complete their studies because they cannot find in-service training. We want to be their direct link. In underprivileged areas there are few people who are skilled in the industry, and we can help them form a co-operative so they can be formally trained.” Director of communications Zazi Nxele said the organisation is looking at signing a memorandum of understanding with manufacturing companies to teach young people about what to do to be approved by the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS). “There are not many young people in this industry because they lack information. There will be awareness campaigns and career exhibitions. In our country there is a high demand for scarce skills and these two sectors are some of them. We want to get young people to tap into the industry, get organised in order to influence of legislature framework. We have become a generation of consumers instead of manufacturers. “We consume on credit. How about empowering young people to manufacture their own products. We want to be their voice of reason, and we want to encourage them to be members so they can give us a voice,” said Nxele. Those interested in the organisation may email UyimacSouthafrica@gmail.com or contact Nxele on 072 150 0858.

GROWING up, I remember my dad always saying: “Cleanliness is next to godliness”. Those words have stuck to me like glue. Butitsaddensmetoseeacity, our city, Pietermaritzburg, once one of the cleanest and most beautiful cities in South Africa, covered in filth. We have dirt in the gutters, filthy streets, uncut grass and areas laden with dirt, and sadly nothing is being done about it. There is no doubt our municipality cannot maintain a clean town, or even half a clean town. Despite promises and many a “cleanupthecity”drive, themunicipality has failed and I’m sure will continue to fail as there is no hope. So as a resident of a city that has the potential to be clean again or not get worse, I ask the people of Pietermaritzburg to help.

If we all play a role in keeping our homes and properties clean, and do not litter, we can at least try to keep our city clean. It’s sad when you see someone toss a piece of paper or even dump dirt on the side of a road or at a no-dumping site. Our municipality can’t even fine offenders, and how will it manage to clean this up? We should be proud to be part of Pietermaritzburg and do our bit to maintain it for generations to come. It sounds unbelievable when my mum says to me how beautiful this city was, and the sad reality is that our children will never know if we don’t do something about it. Let’s all doourlittlebittokeepourPietermaritzburg clean and beautiful. VASH DEEPLAUL Pietermaritzburg

City in tender scandal JEFF WICKS

USINESSMAN and ANC benefactor Vivian Reddy’s company has scored a R50 million contract to supply electricity meters to the Msunduzi Municipality — a contract that did not go out to tender. Edison Power Gauteng, owned by Reddy, was awarded the contract, in a consortium with Itron — which manufactures and installs electronic meter-reading systems, last month by municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi. The awarding of the contract did not follow the normal tender process, and instead piggybacked on a contract worth over R336 million that the consortium had won from the City of Johannesburg. UsingSection32ofthemunicipality’s Supply Chain Management

Policy, city fathers skirted the competitive tender process on the basis that there are “demonstrable discounts and benefits” in doing so. (SEE BOX BELOW) The notice of the award, obtained by The Witness, was signed by Nkosi on February 19. “I am pleased to advise you of the Msunduzi Municipality’s acceptance of your tender in terms of Section 32 … at the terms and conditions stated thereinandasstipulatedinthetender awarded by the City of Johannesburg at the total price of R336 264 536,00. “The budget available for the project is R50 million. Msunduzi Municipality does not guarantee that theentirecontractvaluewillbespent. The contract period shall be three years, commencing from the date of appointment,” the letter reads.

The municipality has a chequered history in awarding contracts to supply electricity meters. In 2009, a R240 million, threeyear contract to install automated meters in the city was awarded to a Port Elizabeth-based company, Unique Mbane, when the municipality was experiencing cash flow problems. There had been no provision for the expenditure in the 2009/10 council budget, and questions were raised about where the money had come from to pay the first instalment of R70 million. The contract was subsequently cancelled in 2010 after coming under scrutiny from local and provincial government authorities. Unique Mbane remained in charge of meter reading, but this link was also dissolved 2012 when the

municipality decided to take on the function. The directors of Unique Mbane pursued the city legally for a multimillion-rand payment for services rendered and products that it had supplied. Edison Power spokesperson ChristoNichollsreferredTheWitness to the municipality for comment on thecontract, whichisthoughttobefor the installation of prepaid meters, but which is not specified in the documentation seen by The Witness. “Please note all matters concerning the contract must be addressed by the municipality as per official code of conduct agreement.” He added that Edison Power could assist the Msunduzi Municipality “in notonlyensuringdesirableelectricity revenue collection levels, but also

introduce a level of electricity supply excellence and convenience only possible through utilisation of the EPG offered End-2-End Smart Meter Solution”. “Further, our intensive in-field audit will uncover all illegal electricity connections or billing schemes, which will directly contribute towards increased revenue for the municipality,” he said. Msunduzi spokesperson Nqobile Madonda refused to answer pointed questions on the contract, saying only that city management would comment “in due course”. IFP caucus leader Dolo Zondi said the deal needed urgent scrutiny. “This is an extremely worrying issue. We come from a situation where the city has made mistakes in the past, and we would be seeing a repeat of history if we fall into the same trap as before by not following due process. “Theawardofthe metering contract in 2009 was something that brought the municipality to its knees. “Why this contract was awarded without going through the normal transparent tender process needs a lot more scrutiny,” he said. DA exco member Judith Lawrence questioned the contract. “With matters such as these, city administrators usually thrust these contracts through the process with little time for due diligence or consultation. We will have to look closely at this and be wary of it,” she said.

INETHEMBAMkhize(16),aPietermaritzburg “songbird” is appealing for sponsorship for her trip to Germany in June. Sinethemba, a pupil at Carter High, is one of the KZN Youth Choir members who is to compete on an international level there. The self-confessed songbird started her journey to Germany by entering the first phase of auditions that took place last year. She was successful in the first phase and

went into the second phase where she was chosen to be one of the choir. Apart from being a music fanatic and a second alto singer Sinethemba said that going to Germany will be opening many doors for her in terms of learning more about music as a whole. “I have managed to collect part of the R28 000 that is required for the two-week trip to Germany.” The sponsorship Sinethemba is appealing for will cover accommodation, clothes and necessities the trip requires. “Being part of the choir has been a dream come true and it is something I have been wishing for ever since I realised that I am passionate about music. “My hands are open for any kind of sponsorship I can get. It could be money, clothes or any donation that people are able to give me. I am passionate about music and am doing what I love. Music is my second choice and I’m planning to make it a career and an investment,” said Sinethemba. She is also part of the dance routine for the traditional song they will perform in German. “The KZN Youth Choir is leading in the province and we are taking over the country. We also feel we are not given as much recognition as we should - going to Germany will be an indication that we are the best,” she said. Those who wish to sponsor Sinethemba can phone her on 079 780 2859.

I first heard about Mr Shake on a community radio talk show. I took his number down and booked an appointment. He charged me to read my fortune. I was shocked when he told me my name, and my husband’s name. Mr Shake saw that my husband and I were fighting. He mentioned that my husband was involved with another woman which I couldn’t believe. He then showed me the other woman in a mirror and I was shocked!! I had lived for 10 years with unhappiness in my marriage until now. Mr Shake cast a spell and the other women separated with my husband and later both confessed to me. Today we live happy with respect and no fighting after Mr Shake binded him to me. I recommend him to others who are suffering and regard him as my guide. My husband has been to him and his business has improved.

6 Years ago my life was a mess. My husband had left me and my children were always sick. Luckily I saw a testimony on the local TV station about prayers offered by Professor Osmon. When they prayed for a divorced lady who united with her husband after 9 years of divorce and he was also saved from drugs. I paid R200 for consultation with Osmon. They used the mirror and showed me faces of the people who were trying to pull me down. I was given powerful love crystals, Indian ash plus a special ring to fix my financial problems, within 3 days my husband returned, now I am happily married, I was promoted at work, I recommend him to anyone who has anyone who has marriage, financial problems and unfinished jobs. ORD has unveiled its up dated Ranger bakkie in Thailand and its sporting design tweaks throughout, im proved engines and the auto maker’s latest technologies. The new Ranger will be launched in South Africa in the fourth quarter of 2015. Specifi cation and prices will be con firmed closer to launch. At the front, it has a new trapezoidal grille, new diod headlights, tweaked bumper and bonnet. The Ranger can wade through 800mm of water, has 230mm ground clearance, 28 degree approach and 25degree departure angles. For lowspeed torque or ad ditional downhill braking drivers can engage the lowrange 4x4 and activate the electronic rear differential. The Ranger has a towing capability of up to 3500kg. Driving assistance technolo gies: • Lanekeeping alert helps prevent the driver from uninten tionally drifting out of a lane when driving at highspeeds. • Adaptive cruise control makes use of radar sensors to maintain both a preset speed as well as a preset distance from thevehicleahead.Whenthesys tem detects a vehicle ahead, it decelerates automatically to

maintain a safe distance. • Forward alert Gives drivers a visual and audible warning when the gap to a vehicle ahead drops below a safe distance. The system also charges the brakes. • Park assist uses sensors to detect obstacles and provide audible warnings when the vehi cle approaches obstructions at low speeds. • Tyre pressure monitor alerting drivers when tyre pres sure is too low • Electronic stability pro grammewithrollovermitigation and trailer sway • Driver impairment monitor uses a camera and onboard sensors to detect if the driver is drowsy. If the system notices signs such as drifting on the road and sudden corrective steering inputs, the system warns the driver with signals. In markets where it is availa ble, Emergency Assistance uses a Bluetoothpaired and con nected phone to call local emer gency services after a serious collision. • Adaptive load control ad justs the electronic stability con trol based on vehicle load The new Ranger is equipped with hill assist, hilldescent con trol and emergency brake assist ance. Powering the new ranger is choiceoffourengines(threedie

sel, onepetrol)eachmatedtoei ther a sixspeed manual or auto and with stop/start fuelsaving. The 3.2litre Duratorq five cylinder TDCi diesel has updated exhaust gas recirculation to im prove fuel efficiency, Ford says, by as much as 18%. The 3.2litre diesel is capable of 147kW/470Nm. The 2.2litre fourcylinder diesel will be of fered, depending on the market, in either 118kW/385Nm guise or 96kW variant. The new Ranger will be avail ablewithFord’s2.5litreDuratec petrolcapableof122kW/225Nm of torque. Ford says its new Ranger has “advanced sounddeadening materials” for improved insula tion and cabinnoise reduction. The new Ranger will be equipped with Sync 2, the latest generation of Ford’s incar con nectivity. It allows drivers to use voice commands, such as “tempera ture 20 degrees”, “play AC/DC” or“I’mhungry”tocontroltheair con, entertainment system and satnav. The new bakkie also sports a 24V socket. The 2015 Ford Ranger will be built at the automaker’s Silver tonassemblyplantnearPretoria for distribution in Africa and Europe. Wheels24.

• CALM down. Don’t panic or lose your temper. • Check if anyone’s hurt. Determine the extent of the damage by ensuring that all parties involved are okay. Including yourself. • Call an emergency helpline. If someone has been hurt, call an ambulance. Don’t move anyone who is injured unless they are in danger. • Contact the police. And don’t leave the accident scene. This should be obvious. • Exchange details. - Names and surnames; - ID numbers; - phone numbers; - number and/or licence plate and registration numbers;

- addresses, and - insurance details • Find witnesses, if any. If there are people who saw what happened, ask them to hang around until the police arrive. This may work in your favour. • Give a written statement Reporttheaccidentassoon as possible. Before insurance companies process accident claims, they require a case number that you will only receive once you’vegivenadetailedandaccurate account - in writing - of what happened to the police. This is important. • Take note of other details… … such as who the traffic and/or police officers on duty are, the name of the ambulance service and its rescue

teams details. If your car needs to be towed, get the driver’s contact information too. • Contact your insurance company. Once you’ve done all of the above, speak to a consultant and find out what your next step should be regarding your claim. • Don’t beat yourself up about it Feeling guilty about the accident will not change anything. If necessary, seek a counsellor to help you deal with the trauma. Numbers worth noting - if you’re calling from a cellphone, dial 112. For SAPS, dial 10111. For ambulance services, dial 10177. - Wheels4Women.

Popular Easter tourney not happening this year After 43 years of staging of a well-run, popular annual Easter tournament, the Pietermaritzburgh and District Soccer Association (Padsa) will not be hosting the event this year. Former event participant and veteran sport journalist JERRY BARNES spoke to Padsa president Ronald Naidoo to find out why. JERRYBARNES(JB):ALOToflocal soccer followers, especially the Easter tournament supporters, local clubs and the whole of KwaZulu-Natal and other parts of Eastern Cape are very disappointed that this year Padsa won’t be staging this popular and annual event. Is this correct? ROLAND NAIDOO (RN): Yes, Jerry this is true and we are all heartbroken. JB: Tell us why? RN: The reason is that Safa has been restructuring whereby they are moving away or have moved away from association football with all municipalities having a single local football association (LFA) . In our case, this being Safa Msunduzi, who

reports to the regional Safa uMgungundlovu – these now would be changed to streams. For example Padsa is now a Northern Stream, MDFA would become central etc. All these associations, Edendale, Padsa, Mdfa, etc. would have to dissolve at some point. Clubs will have to now register with the Msunduzi LFA and will play in one of the streams they so desire. This has impacted on all the history of the association and the Easter tournament as well. It is sad however, as during numerous consultations clubs where given the undertaking that the tournament will continue as it forms a huge part of the PMB calendar only to find that despite warnings to Safa Msunduzi of the magnitudeandpreparationthatisrequired, it has failed to deliver on the promise stating that sponsors are not willing to due poor timing. JB: As a former and proud product of this event, I must say it is a confusing matter because there are a lot of other associations, areas and clubs around PMB that will be staging the same kind of event. What exactly is wrong with Padsa staging the Easter tournament?

RN: I understand, but Safa Msunduzi has now taken control of the Northdale facilities and thus this now becomes their responsibility. JB: I hear you but I am still battling tounderstandyourpoint.Imeanyour neighbours, Hillview FC will be hosting their Easter tournament, just up the road from Northdale Stadium. How different is theirs to yours and how come are those guys allowed to stage it? RN: The thing is or maybe the fact is, Hillview FC are a club that has a leaseonthelandandaretomyknowledge not affiliates of Safa, hence they can do so. In all honesty the guys from Hillveiw were very much part if not the Easter tournament founders and due to disagreements among officials they have branched out on their own. There tournament has grown and without the Padsa tournament this year I am sure it is going to be the biggest this year. However, there is huge difference in the number of teams, financially and as well as we have a full junior tournament as well. We also use two venues to accommodate the huge number of teams

and there are too many differences to pen. JB: Yoh! Padsa is going to lose out big time financially and please tell us how much (more or less) your association used to make from the Easter tournament? RN: Nice one Jerry, the Easter tournament was never about financial gain but merely about providing a platform for amateur soccer to be displayed. In the past scouts where invited to the tournament with the hope of talented players being spotted. All affiliations from clubs were usedinprizemonies, medals, kitsand as well as administration costs, over the years sponsors have been hard to comebyandthetournamentwasselfrun. JB: Do you think the event is now gone and dusted for good or are you still going to take the matter up with the governing regional associations? RN: The wheel is in motion and we await the responses from the region –asfarasgoneanddustedIwouldlike to think not, although people only seem to be after the Northdale facility for their own gains. Currently one must ask how many

pleading with DSR to use me or involve me in their programmes, for many reasons. Firstly, I felt DSR is doing many programmes around the city and province, but they are unknown because they are not popularised or given propery coverage. Besides being a journalist, I am passionate about sport, especiallyathletics, netballand soccer. I am always heartbroken to hear about projects or programmes that are being rolled out in other areas without knowing or fairly extending them to the other communities, especially underprivileged ones. I always want to get closer and be fully involved in any way - being a volunteer, assistant or just be an ordinary part of them. I must say the campaign, a course or a programme that started last Sunday is warmly welcomed by everybody. I believe it is not about training people who are potential coaches, officials or managers, but who will also

produce quality athletes who will dominate the international scene in a few years. Peoplewhoaretrainednowwillbe forcedtogobacktotheircommunities and work with children in order to qualify for the next phase. I must also say, fromthebottomofmyheart,Iwas very happy to see a large number of peoplefromfarareassuchasHowick, VulindlelaandRichmondbussedinto attend the course. However, on the other side I have a question that is still burning-whywerepeoplefromareas such as Woodlands, Eastwood, Northdale and Glenwood not included. Out of Eastwood residents, only two of us attended, other northern areas were not represented. We all live in a democratic country and other race groups need to be fully and fairly accommodated. So, parents and all my neighbours, don’t be surprised if I ask you to allow your children to attend my training sessions because I will be starting soon with my projects.

teams are playing football that are from the northern areas? JB: Are you happy with the way in whichthematterhasbeenhandledor do you suspect foul play? RN: Currently we have very disgruntled community members. Past and present officials are up in arms as yes we suspect that people are worried about positions and power, more over they want to destroy the history of Padsa – they claim we must embrace change yet in their own areas there isn’t football happening. JB: How old was the event, when was it founded and by whom? RN: The event would have been 43 this year. It started in 1971 with Leeds United being the inaugural champs and there are many people who had played a pivotal role – the likes of Uncle Thumba Soobiah, Louis Reddy, Sunny Naidoo, Kay Parus and many others past and present. The tournament has grown significantly over the years. JB: My brother, I hope you find a way to go around this problem and solve it. For Padsa and the Greater Pmburg area to lose the event is a big blow to the game and to the entire community and only to see it coming back will properly heal the situation. Good luck for the future. RN: Thank you my brother, we are all feeling down and destroyed and will go flat out to sort it out.
