Municipality lacks law enforcement
licence to the person because we resolved that issue. In a previous reports we talked about bringing investors into our city. “Where we cannot enforce the law to one individual, how can we secure investment? This undermines us when we take resolutions. What tells you that the law is going to be enforced if we cannot protect our business people who pay rates and taxes from a person who
doesn’t pay rates and taxes?” asked Xulu. Exco member Eunice Majola urged council to look into the congested Pietermaritz Street. “We need to look at the issue of Pietermaritz Street as I am not sure what is happening there. If you go around Pietermaritz Street you will be there forever because taxis park there and there are car washes in the parking areas,” said Majola. The deputy municipal manager for economic development Dr Ray Ngcobo said the informal clothing business on the corner of Boshoff and Church streets is not legitimate. “That person does not have a permit from us. We previously went thereandconfiscatedlargequantities of clothing and it was a joint operation between economic and community services. “Oursecurity[personnel]willhave to go and confiscate again,” said Ngcobo. Deputy municipal manager for community services Boniwe Zulu said that due to challenges in personnel, theprojectwillsteadilybecarried out in phases. “We are taking into consideration the challenges in terms of personnel so we are going to start small with what we have until we are in a position to offer a comprehensive shift service,” explained Zulu. The establishment of a traffic law enforcement station is aimed at promoting urban safety on a 24-hour basis.
“They sit under the trees with beer and smoke cigarettes from the morning. Most of them are young and I doubt they have even reached matric. They don’t care who is watching them and their don’tcare attitude is worrying since this is a public park. There is a lot of public indecency here while people are at work. It is like we are
watching a movie,” he said. The other concern is seeing people in expensive cars stopping and paying to have sex with these girls, he added. “It is so embarrassing because some of these girls are young. This place is becoming like Prince Alfred, which is known for prostitution,” said the cleaner.

HE Msunduzi Municipality’s lack of law enforcement makes the municipality a “toothless
dog”. This came to light at the recent Executive Committee (Exco) council sitting, when Exco member Thulani Xulu questioned the municipality’s enforcement of its by-laws. Xulu questioned how council will implement and enforce the newly proposed opening of the 24-hour traffic law enforcement stations when it comes to the enforcement of warrants of arrest, public-transport enforcement, escort duties of special events, heavy-duty vehicle enforcement and the N3 speed enforcement and patrol duties. Thiswillalsotackleirregularparking, illegal street car washing and random mechanical ventures. A report from the community services business unit states that the municipality experiences a 30% increase in its maintenance and repairs budget

Alexandra Park’s prostitute numbers increase ALEXANDRA Park is fast becoming the place for young prostitutes during the day, some of whom walk topless. The Echo reporter went to see for herself after park cleaners raised concerns
about the increasing number of these women. The discovery of used condoms in the grass and under the trees was another concern that Echo was made aware of. One of the cleaners said the park is becoming “the place to be” for prostitutes as their numbers are increasing.
At the end of December an Echo reporter witnessed a man and woman having sex in broad daylight opposite the Percy Taylor rockery in the park. A cleaner, who asked not to be named, told Echo that what is worrying is that a lot of young people are seeing prostitution as a solution to their problems.

HE Msunduzi Municipality has suspended 19 employees. This came to light at a recent Msunduzi full council meeting. The suspensions were part of the municipal manager, Mxolisi Nkosi’s report. Presenting the report Nkosi said that at the time when the report was compiled in February only 17 employees had been suspended. “As of today, the number of municipal employees who are on suspension is sitting at 19. “Which means that between today and the time of writing the report two more officials have been suspended,”

Msunduzi Municipality suspends 19 employees >> ‘Issues of suspension are between the employer and employee’ said Nkosi. He said that it is untrue that 50 employees have been suspended. “The issues of suspension are between the employer and employee and we do not discuss them with the media,” said Nkosi.
“How long have the suspensions been in place? What are we doing to address the suspensions? Are they under disciplinary?” asked DA councillor Naleni Atwaru. Nkosi said the period of suspensions given to the 19 municipal
employees vary. “Theyvaryintermsofthetimethat people have been suspended. We have got a 90-day period on which we have to suspend and bring people back or charge them,” said Nkosi. He said that only one case has
taken longer than 90 days, adding that all the others are within the framework of the law. The Witness quoted a South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) official as saying that the list of suspended officials consists of both high and low-level municipal staff. “Someofthemweresuspendedsix months ago, some were suspended three months ago, but they are sitting at home getting paid to do nothing. “I don’t believe all incidents warranted suspensions - some of them should have been investigated first. Besides the suspensions, corruption is rife in Msunduzi,” The Witness quoted the Samwu official under anonymity terms.

Thieves hit Manor homes KYLE VENKTESS MANOR residents say the area has become a hot spot for crime after two houses were broken into on the same night over the weekend. One family was forced to cut their holiday short after thieves ransacked their home, stealing valuables. Sunitha Sewpal and her family had been in Durban on holiday since Thursday, but returned home on Saturday evening, shortly after being told that their home in Mason Road had been broken into. “About five men lifted our gate off the rails and then entered our home. They stole our TV and my jewellery, among other things,” she said.
Itisbelievedthatneighbours, alertedbythe blaring alarm, called the police and private security guards, after which the men fled in a blue BMW with the valuables. The family was counting the cost of the robbery, and left the home untouched while waiting for fingerprinting to be done before taking steps to clean up. The police reported that another home, on the corner of Mason Road and Maple Street, which was also unoccupied at the time, was broken into on Saturday night. The house was vacant as the owners were making renovations before moving in. Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said a case of housebreaking was opened, but no arrest has been made. Residents said the area has become the target of thieves.
Sorry state of KZN cop vehicles JONATHAN ERASMUS
P
ROVINCIAL police have quite literally had the wheels taken away from underneath them, with nearly half of all stations’ vehicles in for repairs. And police officers, instead of patrolling the streets, have been relegated to be “desk jockeys” having to beg, borrow or use their own cars to carry out their duties. And it appears that the problem is not going to go away soon, with chronic shortages of artisans and a multi-million-rand high court battle over who has the right to supply parts to the SAPS. Officers revealed repairs can take anything from two weeks for a simple battery swop to a month for a service and up to four months for something more serious. The South African Police Union KZN chairperson, Bongani Mncwango, believes unless the problem is rectified, police at the province’s 184 stations cannot execute their mandate to protect communities. “Out of every 10 vehicles at a given station across the province, between three and five are lying in the garage. This is completely unacceptable. Some vehicles are so poorly repaired that they are back in the workshop within a week,” said Mncwango. Hesaidachronicshortageofartisans was a key issue as well as stations not being allowed to repair and source parts locally, instead having to use designated police garages and source parts from central hubs such as Durban. “The police are unable to carry out their duties. This leads to a vicious circle of the community reporting slow response to management, management complaining to the station, the station informing management their vehicles are in for repair and then management’s argument that the repairs are delayed because they are waiting for financial authorisation.” Alexandra Road SAPS in March had 21 - out of its fleet of 80 - sitting inthepoliceworkshop.Thestation has just over 100 staff. At Pietermaritzburg Central, out of 42 vehicles used in visible policing only 16 were in use, with the remaining vehicles either on court duty, in for repairs or seconded to other units.
Pietermaritzburg CPF chairperson Claire Crawley said the problem goes beyond Alexandra Road. “At the SAPS garage in Oribi vehicles are piling up. The turnaround time of repairing police vehicles is shocking and this is affecting various stations ability to respond to crime,” said Crawley. Crawleysaidpoliceofficersare frustrated that they are immobile. “It is a mess with officers having to share vehicles for a variety of tasks. This is a serious issue.” A senior officer at Alexandra Road not authorised to talk to the media said they have to work via “phone and e-mail”. “Police officers are having to work from their desks rather than getting out into the community. This is hampering service delivery,” said the officer. The officer said vehicle repairs are further delayed when the repair is outsourced. “If a vehicle is out-sourced one can add a further three weeks until it is released. This is because one needs to wait for the funds to be requisitioned and then released by the procurement department. If the repair costs are more than anticipated there is a further delay while more funds are requisitioned. The mechanics only startworkoncetheyarepaid,”said the officer. He said police officers sometimes have no choice but to use their own vehicles. The DA’s spokesperson for police, Diane Kohler-Barnard, called the lack of operational vehicles “a catastrophe”. “The high volume of repairs and slow turnaround time is the case all over the country and there is no sign of it changing any time soon.” In September 2014, the Pretoria High Court overturned a tender awardedbytheSAPStoABEMidas and Pinnacle (Auto Parts) who had secured the multi-million-rand tender to supply parts to the police service. An application was brought by Autozone, who had the tender for the previous 13 years, challenging the award. In October 2014 the SAPS appealed the decision. The matter has yet to be finalised.Attemptstogetcomment from the provincial police were unsuccessful.

HREE Msunduzi municipal employees were recently arrested for copper-cable
theft. Msunduzi municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi said the employees were meant to appear in court last week. Nkosi said that with copper-cable theft some cases involve municipal officials. “Unfortunately, the ones who the magistrate has made rulings on do not involve our officials. “The cases are pending. About three of our employees were arrested for the same offences and were meant to appear in court - unfortunately, I do not have the latest on that. “Once you are arrested by the
Municipal employees arrested for copper theft police we allow that process to precede without us getting involved, with the view that once that has been completed there will be disciplinary processes,” said Nkosi. Last year Nkosi wrote a letter to the magistrate court’s chief magistrate to investigate what the municipality saw as a lenient sentence for two people, Thembelani Ngina and Buyiseni Mayapha, who appeared before court last year for copper-cable theft.
In the letter Nkosi said it was disappointing to learn that the sentence was either 12 months imprisonment or a R2 500 fine. Nkosi requested the sentence be looked into, bearing in mind that cable theft and illegal electricity connection losses exceed a billion rand. He also said that since 2013, more than 12 lives have been lost due to copper-cable theft and illegal electricity connections and a number of people have been
seriously injured as a result. “In light of the above, we appeal to you as the chief magistrate to investigate the sentencing of Ngina and Mayapha, as this lenient sentence does not send out adeterrenttocopper-cablethieves and illegal electricity connection thieves within the Msunduzi Municipality … so it is the responsibility of our courts to impose harsh sentences on criminals who have been found and/or pleaded guilty,” stated Nkosi in the letter.
Be careful when parking your vehicle warn SAPS ECHO REPORTER
>>nompendulo.ngubane@myecho. co.za THE South African Police Service in Pietermaritzburg has warned drivers to follow safety measures when parking their car. The Pietermaritzburg SAPS reported that a high percentage of the recently reported cases pertaining to theft from cars in the CBD and
surrounding areas is due to negligence and carelessness. Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said a number of reported thefts out of cars occur without any forced entry, which indicates that suspects are using jamming devices on the vehicle’s locking system when the driver activates the alarm. “Drivers must keep doors locked at all times. Valuable items such as laptops and cameras should not be left
in the car but should be placed in the boot. “Do not open the windows for hawkers along the road and at the traffic lights and don’t use cellphones while driving, unless the driver has a handsfree kit. “Luggage must be stored in the boot, out of sight. Don’t leave a handbag or briefcase in the car and leaving keys in the ignition must be avoided at all times,” said Jeevan.
She warned that doors must be locked and closed when getting out of the car. “Remove detachable radios and the radio face when getting out of the car. Drivers must try to fit an alarm or antitheft device in their vehicle. “Parking lots with a parking attendant or supervision or someone patrolling are the best, otherwise try to park in locations that are well lit,” she said.

ORRECTIONAL officers under the Pietermaritzburg management area are proof that hard work pays off, after scooping the most prestigious award at the National Excellence Awards held in Cape Town recently. The group, comprising five members, were awarded the Minister’s Discretionary Award by the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Advocate Michael Masutha, for their participation in community development. The awards are held annually to recognise outstandingcontributionsandperformanceby correctional officials. Chairperson of the group, Dennis Williams, said they scooped the award for their role in poverty alleviation and community development. “Currently, we have various social investment projects around different under- privileged areas under Umgungund-
lovu. We are excited about the award, as titles, positions, material wealth and money do not mean anything if you have not made a difference in your community.” Advising other public servants, he said: “Be passionate about your work, don’t choose your profession because of money. It goes beyond money. It is about service delivery and putting people first.” Group marketing officer, Patrick Mtolo, said it is important for South Africans to join hands in fighting poverty, instead of waiting for the government.“Ourrecipeforsuccessispassion. Helping the needy is something we are passionate about, but not because we expect anything in return. “As public servants we must treat our work as a calling so we can reap the rewards. Other than public servants, it is also important for us to be concerned about the welfare of one another so that we can help where needed.” The group walked away with a floating trophy, R21 000 and a laser printer.

ONE way of showing dissatisfaction against exorbitant increases in the price of fuel, electricity, water sanitation and taxes is to protest. Howironicalitseemswhenthere are service delivery protests, roads are blocked and vehicles stoned. Those workers on their way to work are contributing to the sustenance of this struggling economy via their taxes. Its a case of the tail wagging the dog. South Africa is becoming a welfare state with almost 16.5 million people on some form of social security. Therefore there is so much pressure on taxpayers to sustain these social security grants. SARS has so much power it goes into your bank account and takes out your money owed to it. Taxpayers are easy targets. Taxpayers’ money can be used productively if unscrupulous corruption is curbed. The R30 billion lost annually through corruption and incompetence can be used to build houses for people living in the squatter and transit camps. This will reduce the number of service delivery protests and enhance their quality of life. Another option that can be explored is bringing back the independent body like the Hawks who can deal with corrupt government officials without fear or favour. A clear message must be sent to government during these protests. • Theft and corruption must be eradicated. • Those involved in corrupt activities must be sent to jail. • A proper adjudication process for tenders. There must be an independent body that has the knowledge and expertise who must be in charge of all tenders. There should be no tenders for pals.
Make government accountable • Mechanisms must be put into place to eliminate theft of water and electricity. • All government officials must sign performance agreements and know exactly what their portfolios entail. Non-performing officials must be fired as they are accountable to taxpayers. • Reduce the number of members going to cabinet from 400 to 200. • Cadre deployment and redeploymentmustbeeradicatedat all costs. • The two power stations of Medupi and Khusela must be investigated as to why they are running so far behind and costing billions of rands over-budget. • Eskom needs to become proactive and sort out the energy requirements of South Africa. Alternative methods of sourcing energy needs to explored. • Salaries and perks of ministers must be slashed. The state of our country is evidence to this. We have an electricity crisis, an impending water crisis, daily service delivery protests, an almost stagnant economy and some of our institutions, like the police services, are engaging in court battles. It is time to collectively demand answers. Government understands only one language and that is the language of protest. The escalation of prices and exorbitant taxes that government collects has to be questioned. The buck has to stop somewhere. The taxpayer cannot be sucked dry of every ounce of blood. It is taxpayers’ rights to demand transparency and accountability from government. VIJAY SURUJPAL Via email
Another waste of taxpayers’ money
CITY CA Roshan Morar’s appointment as chair of Sanral avoids addressing the real issues concerning tolling and petrol price hikes. Morar can make all the right noises about Sanral since as an employee it would not be in his interests to do otherwise, but unless he addresses why motorists have to pay four times to use public roads he and Sanral are “barking up the wrong tree”. Since self-propelled vehicles began using roads, governments introduced an annual licence fee which was supposed to be used to construct and maintain roads. During the sixties, when the Broederbond-dominated Nationalistsbeganmisappropriatingpub-
lic funds to maintain their homeland policies, they instituted a levy of 2c per litre of petrol at the pumps, with the excuse that the revenue so generated would be used to upgrade inter- provincial roads to world-class standards . As the misuse of state revenue continued unabated, the Nationalists used spurious excuses to build toll plazas, much against the huge outcry from the motoring public. Come1994andtheANCgovernment realized that tolling can be “an instant cash cow” - hence the introduction of e-tolling on inter-city roads. In Robert Nicolai’s letter (Witness 6 November, 2014), he rightfully questioned the logic of e-tolling since 81% of the revenue goes to the Austrian Billing Co.
What logic was used by ‘Sbu Ndebele to conceive such a system is beyond ordinary comprehension .The ANC is obsessed with taxing thepayingpublicinordertoemploy more of its cadres, who in turn make the right noises that appeal to the gullible masses that blindly vote for it election after election . AsanauditorMorarshouldhave been employed to figure out why the millions pouring in from motoristsisnotjudiciouslyutilisedtobenefit motorists and not cadres. More of Morar’s propaganda about Sanral and its creation can be read in last year’s glossy magazine - another waste of taxpayers’ money. DALEEP SAN Mountain Rise
RIP daddy … BORN and brought up in the mist of Ladysmith then relocating to PMB where he met his wife, and then having three children is no other than Goraknath Bhag wandas Maharaj, known as “Vickey”. A man of his word, a man of honour, a man of integrity, a man of trust, a man of wisdom, knowledge and understanding, a man who stood up for what’s right, a man whom I can call “dad”. There are no words to explain what a man he was to us all. He always stood by our side in any situation, whether we were right or wrong. The world’s best panel beater and spray painter. My father was a man who didn’t sit idle, when he dreamt a dream he fulfilled it. He loved panelbeating and spray painting.
He aimed for his degree even thought he faced many challenges. He was a man who planned for the week in advance and knew exactly what he wanted and when he would achieve it. My dad never gave up dreaming big and never gave up working. He provided for his family whether sick or not. A husband, a dad, a panel beater, a gardener, a builder. Our superman, our father. You were everything and more. You were never selfish and always put us first in any and every situation.. We loved you before, we love you now and will love you always. Health delivery in this country, like SAA, Eskom and local government is bust NOT so long ago, the challenges at Northdale Hospital were exposed in the media. Many of Northdale’s problems with staff emanate from a shortage of human resources, low morale and challenging working
conditions. The MEC, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, scurried to charge that if Northdale was his bank, he would move to another bank - presumably for acceptable service delivery. Currently, the KZN province needs a
minimum of 800 well-staffed and equipped ambulances but it now has just fewer than 600 vehicles and about less than 50% of that number is in good working order. The provincial Department of Health was only able to allocate
R1 million towards ambulances due to its crippling financial situation. Dhlomo is in deep denial health, like Eskom, SAA and local government, is bust. Among hospitals, Grey’s, Addington and Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital are
all forced to turn away cancer patients as oncology treatment is impossible, equipment is in a state of disrepair or collecting dust. JAY JUGWANTH Northdale
The analogy of a windowless room
Sibusiso Biyela
@astrosibs
D
URING a discussion I had with a pastor who wanted to understand my decision to announce my atheism, I constructed an analogywhichIthinkexplainsthedifference of opinion between him and I: The analogy of the windowless room. I was a member of a church in my township which is a 15 minute walk from my home. I had been attending the church since 2007 and I participated in the church until I was elected youth lead-
er last year, after holding a few important positions in the youth section of the church. My decision to leave the church and express my scepticism and atheism has come as a great shock to some including my former pastor. My atheism stems from an inherent seed of doubt for everything I have ever learned ever since I was eight or nine years old. Now, as I was trying to explain to the man of God that my scepticism is based on the lack of objective evidence for the existence of God or the validity of the Christian religion (or any religion for that matter), I was trumped by his refusal to acknowledge the facts. He explained to me how the order of the universe is evidence of the existence of a “loving creator”. He then proceeded to undo the science of astrophysics and biology through evolution. His facts lacked a true understanding of science and this only served to support the widely excepted idea of believers in God and practitioners of religion being close minded.
This sparked an image in my mind during the discussion of a four-sided room with a roof completely disjoint from the outside room. In this room of the imagination, I conjured up a room where God exists and the walls and the roof are belief and indoctrination. Inside this room (which is neither big nor small, but merely finite in size) is where all those who believe without question reside. This room is as big as those who reside in it believe it to be but the room is still limited it its dimensions. Outside the room is the real world fulloffactsandwondersthatarewaiting to be discovered. Having created this setting, I put my sceptic self on the outside, in the real world.
In this real world that exists outside the room, there are things we know to be physical, things that are supportedbyfactsandtherearemore things that are unknown, but waiting to be discovered. The pastor understood my way of looking at things and he pointed out how ironic it was that this world view was in fact narrow minded. He reminded me how there are professionals such as medical doctors and intellectuals who are theists besides their worldly education. This forced me to change my room and put small windows on it that lets believers have limited glimpses of the real world, the world outside of blind belief. As we went our separate ways, he promised to pray for me and I nodded
THE PASTOR UNDERSTOOD MY WAY OF LOOKING AT THINGS AND HE POINTED OUT HOW IRONIC IT WAS THAT THIS WORLD VIEW WAS IN FACT NARROW MINDED
in appreciation. Anyway, I continued to modify the room, or at least what the occupants thought they saw. From outside the room, the real world, the room does not in fact exist, or rather the walls that hold the inhabitants back. You see, the walls of belief, dogmatism, indoctrination and community acceptance are as real as the barriers that keep football players within the field of play. In reality, in my world of the imagination at least, these lines are drawn on the ground, and as the football players are conditioned to never cross their barrier lines, so are the believers bound by mere lines in the ground. So, there are no walls; this means the inhabitants of the non-existent room can see everything, the real world they find themselves in, but they are not allowed to cross the lines drawn in front of them. This is an imaginary world as you know and analogies can only stretch so far, but this is how I see things as they are.

The Msunduzi Municipality is sorting out the issue of large steel bill boards along Town Bush Road, which, according to the community, were erected without municipal authority.
NQOBILE MTOLO
>>news@myecho.co.za WITH some billboards standing empty for months, the Msunduzi Municipality says it doesn’t mean anything as it is not experiencing challenges. However, Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Nqobile Madonda said their legal department is looking into matching the current bylaws for billboards with the munici-
pality’s new processes. The municipality is also looking at sorting issues surrounding the large steel billboards along Town Bush Road. For almost six years Town Bush Road residents have complained that these billboards were erected without authorisation from the municipality. “This matter is currently being resolved through the proper relevant channels,” said Madonda.
Hollingwood Cemetery talks continue NQOBILE MTOLO
>>news@myecho.co.za THE Hollingwood Cemetery, which has long been on the Msunduzi Municipality’s agenda to address the shortage of burial space in Pietermaritzburg, is to be developed. Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Nqobile Madonda said the municipality is ironing out social issues. “The Hollingwood Cemetery is not currently being used due to social issues that are being sorted out by the municipality with the community. When those issues have been exhausted, the process of developing a cemetery will commence,” said Madonda.
Burials are currently conduct ed at the Mountain Rise Cemetery reserves. Madonda said that the Mountain Rise, Azalea, Snathing and Willowfountain cemeteries have been closed due to lack of space. In 2012 Mpinvestfour Investments (Pty) Limited circu lated a communiqué to various local funeral homes alerting them of the lack of burial space at Ethembeni Memorial Park. At the time, the cemetery had about 7 500 graves. Madonda said that the KZN Department Economic Development and Tourism, through funding from the Human Settlements department, bought Ethembeni for the development

Once this has been finalised, burials will start when the authority has been received from the MEC, as the land was bought for the building of houses. “There is a portion of the burial site that was sold by the previous owner for private burial,” explained Madonda.

INETHEMBA Mkhize (16), a Pietermaritzburg “songbird” is appealing for sponsorship for her trip to Germany in June. Sinethemba, a pupil at Carter High, is one of the KZN Youth Choir members who is to compete on an international level there. The self-confessed songbird started her journey to Germany by entering the first phase of auditions that took place last year. She was successful in the first phaseandwentintothesecondphase where she was chosen to be one of the choir. Apart from being a music fanatic and a second alto singer Sinethemba said that going to Germany will be opening many doors for her in terms of learning more about music as a whole. “I have managed to collect part of the R28 000 that is required for the
two-week trip to Germany.” The sponsorship Sinethemba is appealing for will cover accommodation, clothes and necessities the trip requires. “Being part of the choir has been adreamcometrueanditissomething I have been wishing for ever since I realised that I am passionate about music. “My hands are open for any kind of sponsorship I can get. ‘Kama Sutra 2’ not to be missed AFTER the sold-out success of the original Kama Sutra show three years ago, many wondered if the sequel, Kama Sutra 2, would be just as good. Judging from the remarks of the sold-out audiences at the premier at Sibaya a few weeks ago, it seems the sequel has been judged as “even better” than the prequel. >> ‘I am so impressed with Sandile and Njabulo. They have done extremely well’ CHELSEA PIETERSE
A
NIMAL lovers Sandile Ndlovu and Njabulo Hlongwane finally have their dream jobs working with animals at the uMngeni SPCA and on their way to becoming qualified SPCA inspectors. Hlongwane and Ndlovu grew up in Mpophomeni, just outside Howick and both loved animals from a young age. Ndlovu (22) developed a passion for caring for animals when the nonprofit organisation, Funda Nenja, a township dog training initiative, started work in Mpophomeni. That was four years ago and when Ndlovu heard about the programme, he brought his beloved dog Tiger to the initiative. “I already knew I loved animals, but through the programme, I learnt I wanted to help animals as well. “I went to the SPCA and applied for a job last year and when I heard I had got the job, I was so excited.” He still had Tiger at home, but she was old and he was thinking of adopting a dog from the SPCA to keep his canine company.
Hlongwane (26) also grew up around animals and knew from an early age that he wanted to work with animals. “My family did not have money to send me to college. I wanted to study to become a vet, but this is the next best thing and working at the SPCA is a dream come true.” Hlongwane worked as a trolley pusher outside the Howick Pick n Pay until someone spotted him and asked the uMngeni SPCA manager Dudu Abrahams to give him a chance. “They said it was a waste of intelligence and talent to let him continue working as a trolley pusher. “I am so impressed with Sandile and Njabulo. They have done extremely well and have proved themselves to be hard working and great with our animals.” Abrahams said the two started training as SPCA inspectors last month and although the course is long, she has no doubt they would pass with flying colours. Ndlovu and Hlongwane said they wereecstatictheyhadajobtheycould be proud of and were confident that this time next year, they would be qualified SPCA inspectors.

THIS ONE DAY SPECIAL PRAYER FIXED MY MARRIAGE & FINANCIAL PROBLEMS
6 Years ago my life was a mess. My husband had left me and my children were always sick. Luckily I saw a testimony on the local TV station about prayers offered by Professor Osmon. When they prayed for a divorced lady who united with her husband after 9 years of divorce and he was also saved from drugs. I paid R200 for consultation with Osmon. They used the mirror and showed me faces of the people who were trying to pull me down. I was given powerful love crystals, Indian ash plus a special ring to fix my financial problems, within 3 days my husband returned, now I am happily married, I was promoted at work, I recommend him to anyone who has anyone who has marriage, financial problems and unfinished jobs. Igesund remembers stint with Team of Choice LLOYD BURNARD GORDON Igesund has achieved just about everything in South African football. The former Bafana Bafana mentor remains the only man to have won four PSL titles at four different clubs. He has also won two topeight cups. But despite his domesticsuccesswithOrlandoPirates, Mamelodi Sundowns, Santos and Manning Rangers, Igesund still holds a special place in his heart for Maritzburg United. The 58-year-old coached the Team of Choice in the 2008/9 season, at a time when Maritzburg were playing their homegamesatWoodburnRugby Stadium. He may not have wonanythingduringhistenure at the club, but to this day he looks back fondly on his time in the Midlands and salutes the work done by chairperson Farouk Kadodia. With AmaZulu still at the
foot of the PSL table, Maritzburg are by far the best team in the province this season. “I am very happy for Farouk, his team and where they are at the moment. He is a fantastic guy. He loves the game passionately and I had some fond memories here,” Igesund told The Witness in the tunnel after his SuperSport United had knocked over Maritzburg 1-0 at Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday. “I really enjoyed my time here. When you come back to a team who you’ve coached before it’s always nice to see them doing well …” There was also a return on Saturday for two former Maritzburg stars, now turning out in SuperSport colours. Senegalese centre back Mor Diouf was immense for Maritzburg between 2009 and 2012 before making the move up to Pretoria, while former Maritzburg captain Michael Morton is now also playing under Ige-
sund. Both players were effective on Saturday. Diouf gave Harry Gwala a taste of what they used to have by being a pillar of strengthaeriallyfor90minutes — bashing away long balls as he and Clayton Daniels preserved SuperSport’s clean sheet. Morton, meanwhile, wasintroducedasasubstituteearlyin the second half. Seldom glamorous with the ball at his feet, Morton’s strength has always been his energy and physicality. That was precisely what he deliveredonSaturday, hisfresh legsallowinghimtocoverevery inch of the pitch as he broke up play and made life difficult for Maritzburg. “It’s always great to be back here. I love the stadium and it was a great crowd again so I enjoyed it,” the central midfielder said of his return. “I think we got a bit lucky at the end there. They could have scored a couple but we scraped through.”

ORMER PSL Golden Boot winners and influential South African soccer figures feel the race for golden prize is getting hotter and will become interesting towards the end of the season. Former winners such as Collins Mbesuma, Siyabonga Nomvete and George Dearnaley this week told Echo that it “was not over until is over” as it is not clear yet who will win. Mbesuma, whowonitwithKaizer Chiefs during his early career in South African soccer, says it takes a lot of team effort and commitment from a striker to eventually win it. “It’s not an ordinary situation or campaign. You need to stay focused, fit, on form and out of injuries for the entire season. “You also need the whole team to be behind you all the way. Eish, at the moment I am not too sure who will take it at the end of the season, but I can tell you it will be interesting in the final stages of the season. All the top scorers stand a good chance of winning,” said Mbesuma. Nomvete says he wishes the high scorers good luck because it’s tough to stay up there. “I really wish them all the best. To
be among the best it takes a lot from tplayers and demands 100% concentration and commitment fromtheplayerandhisteam-mates.” Durban-born and former AmaZulu striker Dearnaley says strikers need to be “greedy and always hustle” around the box in all matches. “To win the golden boot you need to be a mad player and always itchy to score. You also need to always be around the box and hunt for scoring opportunities,” he said. Last weekend the race for the golden boot took another twist when Bloemfontein Celtic's Lerato Lamola became the latest man to hit the 10-goal mark in the Absa Premiership at the weekend. Lamola helped Celtic salvage a 2-2 draw with University of Pretoria bynettinga58th-minuteequaliserat Free State Stadium on Sunday. The ex-Roses United attacker joined Mamelodi Sundowns’ Cuthbert Malajila, Free State Stars’ Moeketsi Sekola and Puleng Tlolane of Polokwane City at the top of the scoring charts. Netball SA backs Durban’s Commonwealth bid NETBALL South Africa (NSA) has thrown its weight behind Durban’s bid to host the Commonwealth Games in 2022. NSA president Mimi Mthethwa said netball was an important component of the Commonwealth Games, and NSA would be honoured to have such an important tournament at home. “Netball is mainly played by Commonwealthcountries, andthecream of world netball is represented at the Commonwealth Games every four years,” she said. “There are two major events on the international netball calendar – the World Cup and the Commonwealth Games. South Africa is one of the top six countries in world netball, and I know the Spar Proteas would welcome playing in front of their home crowd in a major event like the games.” She said netball was the biggest women’s sport in South Africa, and
a tournament of the magnitude of the Commonwealth Games would further enhance its popularity in the country. “We have seen what happened in the United Kingdom after the Olympic Games in London in 2012, and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014. Local support for the sporting codes involved in the games increased dramatically, as British sportsmen and women captured the imagination of the British public. “The same would happen here, and support for netball would grow exponentially as people see what an exciting sport it is when played at international level.” “Withhomesupport,SouthAfrica would feel confident of challenging for a medal in netball.” As the only city in the running to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Durban is almost certain to be named the host for the biggest multisports event ever hosted in
have six league games left, with Sundowns and Platinum Stars having a match in hand each. Last season Kaizer Chiefs’ Bernard Parker won the Lesley Manyathela award with 10 goals.

THE whole of the greater Pietermaritzburg and outlying area residents were disap pointed last weekend when the Pieterma ritzburg and District Soccer Association (Padsa) at Northdale Stadium could not host the annual Padsa Easter tournament this year. As a former player and a fan of this event, it was not just a blow to every body, but a killer punch to the develop ment of the game. The Padsa Easter Tournament started about 45 years ago and grew in such a way that it became a mustwatch family event. It also produced a lot of teams and players who ended up in professional ranks with various soccer giants around the country. Players such as Arthur Bartman (Kaizer Chiefs, African Wanderers, Golden Arrows, Moroka Swallows), Shane Morrison (Ama Zulu and SA U23, U20 and U17, Bret Evans (Ajax Cape Town and SA U20 and SAU23 and Bafana Bafana), Shaun Donnely, Ma bhutiKhenyeza(GoldenArrows,Mamelodi Sundowns, Ajax Cape Town, Kaizer Chiefs and Mpumalanga Black Aces), Sandile Ndlovu (former Mamelodi Sundowns Moroka Swallows, Siphesihle Ngobese (former AmaZuluGolden Arrows, Enver Wiltwer(FreeStateStars,MaritzburgUnit ed and Chippa United and Veronica Phewa (exBanyana Banyana), just to mention a few, once took part in the event, which clearlyindicatesthatitmeantalotandob viouslycontributedinthebuildingofSouth African soccer. The reason for failing or for Padsa not beingallowedtohostsuchapremiersoccer event in the capital city is heartbreaking and doesn’t make sense. It is stupid that local soccer politics, a lack of passion, positions, power struggle and simply shortsighted officials played a big role in this. The new local soccer demarcations or restructuring by Safa Mgungundlovu is un acceptable, or it is just a silly excuse. Theregionalsoccergoverningbodyand the national association knew about the Easter tournament many years ago and new structures or arrangements should have accommodated Padsa’s Easter Tour nament and supported it. We all believe the regional and local structures of Safa are here to take the game to the next level, not to destroy the community projects, especially when it comes to developing the game at the grassroot level. May I strongly warn local structures of Safa to treat this matter with the urgency it deserves because it’s going to destroy lo cal soccer and badly divide different racial groups. I think besides Safa or local football as sociations, the Mgungundlovu District Mu nicipality, Msunduzi Municipality, the De partment of Sports and Recreation and stakeholders, such as the founders, former officials and players need to hold a major soccer indaba to resolves this thorny issue. Not only as a former Easter Tourna ment player, but also as a proud resident of the northern areas and a political activ ist, I suggest that local government struc tures must work their butts off to make sure the matter is resolved. I understand the majority of northern area residents are angry and have been overlooked by taking away their annual community event.
