“THE Economic Freedom Fighters is against the removal of the Gandhi statue and there are no subdivisions within the party,” said EFF’s regional organiser Dumisani Shelembe. Shelembe said this in light of last week’s story in Echo about the removal of statues in PMB. “Gandhi came here as a slave and not a colonist and he never oppressed anyone. Gandhi played a meaningful role in fighting apartheid because he stood up and fought the oppressors,” said Shelembe. He also highlighted his concern over bogus EFF members who, he said, are misleading its members. “Thesuspendedmembersarecomingbacktosab otage the party in KZN. These are the people who are not members of EFF. They give the media wrong information on what is happening within EFF. This year these people have spoken to radio stations and

Cosatu banded together its six public service unions in a massive protest on Chief Albert Luthuli Street outside the KwaZulu-Natal Treasury. Members from the National Education, Health and Allied Work-

Workers’ Union of South Africa (Pawusa) joined Cosatu in a flurry of red T-shirts yesterday. According to their attendance list, more than 5 000 members from all unions were expected to attend the protest which demanded a 10% salary increase, a R1 500 housing allowance, six months’ paid maternity leave and 10 days’ paid paternity leave. Along with protesters who marched in Pretoria, the group gathered outside the KwaZulu-Natal Treasury building to display their dissatisfaction and anger at the government department in holding funds they feel should be allocated to them. Popcru provincial secretary Kwenza Nxele said the union had discovered that the main cause of their problems lies at treasury. “The government cannot function without public servants and we have needs that cannot be ignored.” Sadtu provincial secretary Nomarshiya Caluza said the offered increase of 5,8% and R1 200 housing allowance is “an insult to the workers”. “We are ready for a full-blown strike,” Caluza said. “This is just the beginning.”

“Sometimes I take the artists to events and due to unforeseen circumstances they end up not performing. Being a promoter is challenging as you have to make sure you get events that can help the artist put food on his or her table,” she said. Her motivation is radio personality and entrepreneur, Sibusiso Leope, known as DJ Sbu. “I look up to DJ Sbu. He has passion for what he does and does not look down on people. “There are many things that musicians are not aware of when it comes to taking their music to the next level. It is not only about releasing albums and singing on stage.” To vote for Dube in both categories, SMS Ingoma best media personality Lungile Du be or Ingoma best gospel promoter Lungile Dube to 34050. Public voting closes on Sunday 3 May.

Rhoda Padayachee (left) and Naresh Bhugavathwe point to where criminals dug up electricity cables.

ESIDENTS of Amethyst Crescent in Copesville want municipality security guards back on the street as they believe their visibility will deter electricity cable theft in the area. Last Monday at 3am in Amethyst Crescent a cable was dug up. In 2013 at the same place a cable was removed leaving seven houses without lights, including street lights. Resident Rhoda Padayachee said seven houses were affectedwhenthecablewasstolenonMonday.Shesaid on each occasion when there was criminal activity her dogs would bark. “They barked and we knew that something was goingonoutside.Immediatelyafterthat, thelightswent off and the entire street was plunged into darkness. I could see them digging, but there was nothing I could do because I was scared. “I called the police and they told us they are coming, but they never did. Criminals are not scared to commit crime in this area because they are aware that no one will stop them. They continue with their operation without any worry,” said Padayachee. The Copesville police station is few metres away from where the incident took place. Resident Thabisile Zondo said things were better when there were security guards patrolling the area. “Crime was manageable and criminals were aware there were security guards who patrolled. We are appealing to the municipality to bring back the guards. We are tired of criminals doing as they please in our space,” said Zondo. Ward 29 councillor Thandi Ndlovu was unavailable for comment at the time of going to press. Msunduzi Municipality acting marketing and communications manager Nqobile Madonda said security guards had stopped patrolling in the area because of limited financial resources. She said the municipality will refer the matter to the relevant sections to make a decision. Madonda urged the community to report incidents of electricity theft.

Giving us hope

DRIVING around the city during the past few weeks has made me think that getting back to being the City of Flowers is within our grasp again. Thanks and hearty congratulations to Mbulaheni Tshivhase and his team for beautifying the city. Notable also is the fact that the grass

verges and overgrown bushes were cut and cleared in the Copesville, New Greytown and Ezikethini areas. Lots still has to be done, but at least us ratepayers can start to see our money being utilised for services. N. SINGH Allandale

Zwelithini’s imbizo, ‘aggrandisement’ KING Goodwill Zwelithini’s

imbizo was more of a self-aggrandisement stunt and a concert than about promoting peace, co-existence and doing damage control. After a lengthy silence and strong criticism during and after the xenophobic attacks, the imbizo was held to clarify his stance on the violent attacks. The notions that foreigners are “stealing” jobs and that they don’t have a right to be here need to be rectified immediately. Zwelithini blamed the media for misquoting him. If that was the case, why didn’t he immediately release a press statement correcting it? It does not require an intel-

Moreover, the booing and jeering at non-Zulu priests such as Ashwin Trikamjee during the imbizo raises serious concerns for conscience-driven individuals. There is an urgent need for all key role players to engage in constructive dialogue to understand the grievances of people and communities that might tempt some to commit hate crimes like xenophobia and other discriminatory violence in South Africa.

Principles of Hinduism must be practised THE widespread criminal activity and mur ders in the guise of xenophobia has called South Africans to strive as a nation to spread goodwill and embrace all foreign ers.Religiousleadersandplacesofworship have a role to play as the recent weeks evi denced. Amid having a significant part to play many Hindu places of prayer are them selves fractured and leadership struggles wrapped in egotism is dogged. In many temples cabals that cannot grab leader ship, split the devotee base and move on tostartanotherprayergroupandthiscon tinues supported by regional religious leaders. Some temples are onefamily domi nated and subjected to the will of the wealthyfamily.Inotherplaces, therichdic tate from behind the scenes. Devotees are made to fill membership forms to manage voting rights and a preferred group to lead. Against these examples of disunity the bigger picture of national harmony and peaceful coexistence is going to be diffi cult. It is long overdue for the core princi plesofHinduismtobepractisedinourdaily lives not just preached from the lectern by the very same persons clinging to power. Hinduism like other religions has a mean ingful role to play in the government’s call for national unity. It is time to abandon the quest for power, shed the ego and strive sincerely to heal a wounded South Africa, we will be spiritually uplifted. K. PERUMAL Via email

The girls, all visually impaired, were tasked to come up with a unique and innovative product and had to draft a business plan to present to a panel of judges. The girls, who represented the uMgungundlovu District at Durban’s Olive Convention Centre, had just three weeks to put the business plan together. Classic plays at the Hexagon Theatre

T

Mhlophe said the sky is the limit as they invite artists from every genre to the studio. “We are not looking or inviting artists who only sing gospel. We have talent in our city and they end up putting other citiesonthemapinsteadofputting their city on the map. “Let us produce and direct our own artists and raise our own flag. We do voice-overs and professional recordings of theCDandadverts,”saidMhlophe. Government departments and people interested in the entertainment industry are invited to the studio. Njilo is a businessman known for his unselfish behaviour when it comes to touching lives.

HE Island will be showcased on 13 and15MayattheHexagonTheatre at 8.15pm and 6.30pm respectively. John and Winston are two prisoners on Robben Island, bound by ideology, proximity, shackles and a deep affection. As they rehearse Antigone for the prison concert, John learns that his release is imminent, Winston is a lifer. This classic South African play by Athol Fugard, John Kani and Winston Ntshona, balances hope and despair as it exposes the depths of cruelty and inhumanity while affirming the dignity and courage of the human spirit. Under the direction of Peter Mitchell, TQ Zondi and Mpilo Nzimande deliver riveting performances of this South African classic. TicketsareR45perpersonfor schools. Supplied.

THIS ONE DAY SPECIAL PRAYER FIXED MY MARRIAGE & FINANCIAL PROBLEMS

6 Years ago my life was a mess. My husband had left me and my children were always sick. Luckily I saw a testimony on the local TV station about prayers offered by Professor Osmon. When they prayed for a divorced lady who united with her husband after 9 years of divorce and he was also saved from drugs. I paid R200 for consultation with Osmon. They used the mirror and showed me faces of the people who were trying to pull me down. I was given powerful love crystals, Indian ash plus a special ring to fix my financial problems, within 3 days my husband returned, now I am happily married, I was promoted at work, I recommend him to anyone who has anyone who has marriage, financial problems and unfinished jobs. Do you want to give birth and feeling helpless, heart broken & financially miserable Contact Number: 073 981 2429 Pietermaritzburg up town

Tomorrow the PMB outfit will travel to Soweto’s Dobsonville Stadium to visit relegation-haunted Moroka Swallows for a match at 5pm. Should United’s fight and team spirit stay intact against the once Mighty Dube Birds, they will be able to come back with their shoulders broad and high. United’s PRO Brian Zuma says Swallows are likely to be tricky customers and dangerous because they are fighting to stave off relegation. “While our mission will be to carry on with our mission of collecting points and finish in the top eight bracket, we will be forced to be cautious against Swallows because they are fighting their for their lives,” said Zuma.

ARITZBURG United’s dreams of ending the current season on a high note and within the top eight bracket look positive. When the season kicked off United’s management, especially their chairman Farouk Kadodia, officially made it clear that the Team of Choice was prepared to go for broke and challenge for honours. To prove that their dreams were still on track, the PMB outfit edged out the Nedbank Cup finalist Ajax Cape Town 1-0 on Tuesday night at Harry Gwala Stadium. It proved to be a good night for United’s diehards who patiently waited the entire game to celebrate at the end. Against the visiting Urban Warriors, Mohau Mokate scored in stoppage time as Maritzburg United strengthened their Top 8 Absa Premiership push. Sports outlet reaches out again

PHOTO: NQOBILE MTOLO

Poobie Naidoo’s Sport managing director Gavin Naidoo (left) hands over running shoes to Jarrod Cronjé.

JERRY BARNES LOCAL businessman Poobie NaidooandfounderofPoobieNaidoo’s Sports, continues to reach out to needy communities. Having donated a punch bag to the battling Edendale-based boxing club recently, on Tuesday the sports outlet again opened its heart and donated running shoes to three needy individuals - Rodrick De-Bathe, Jarrod Cronjé and Christopher Whitaker. De-Bathe and Cronjé volunteer at Harmony Retreat Rehabilitation Centre in Greytown. De-Bathe concentrates on teaching and works mostly with school children, while Cronjé works as an addiction recovery coach. Cronjé said he and De-Bathe work with addicts and community members suffering from social ills. “As as a non-profit organisation, we sometimes experience funding problems and buying shoes for both of us is a mission. We teach, exercise, jog and walk a lot when doing classes.

“We are also passionate about athletics and take part in running events around the KZN Midlands,” said Cronjé. Whitaker is a passionate runner whohasbeensufferingwithcancer for a long time, and who is unemployed. He started road running about five years ago after taking part in a local fun event with friends. He will be running the Comrades Marathon for the first time this year and his dream is to run the Pietermaritzburg to Durban event 10 times. “Receiving shoes from Poobie Naidoo Sports was a dream come true. I am unemployed and am really battling to buy a reasonable pair of running shoes. I am very grateful,” he said. Naidoo said his business will always get involved or help needy communities where possible. “As I said many years ago, our hearts are always open to community projects. Our motto says ‘we need you to keep us running’ and community projects need us to keep going,” said Naidoo.
