Two arrested in ‘executionstyle’ murder AMIL UMRAW TWO people were arrested last week for the murder of Gugulethu Gwamanda, who was shot “execution style” last month. The suspects, aged 28 and 34, were arrested and charged for allegedly killing Gwamanda (58) in a plantation outside Thornville in March. The suspects were arrested by Plessislaer Cluster task team members after an “intensive investigation” following the murder. The officers made a breakthrough when they received information from residents about the whereabouts of the suspects. Thesuspectsweretracedandthefirstonewas arrested in Howick on 15 April. The second suspect was arrested in the Oribi area in Pietermaritzburg last Thursday. Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said that on 13 March Gwamanda went to the Pietermaritzburg CBD to shop using her Toyota Verso. She never returned home.

The next day, at about 9am, a passerby noticed a vehicle parked on the side of the road at Maynde farm, Thornville. Inside was the body of a woman who had sustained several gunshot wounds. “The motive of the killing is unknown as her body was found in her vehicle,” Zwane said. The arrested suspects are expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court today. At the time of the murder, police sources, who couldnotbenamed, saidherbodywasfoundwith five bullet wounds and it appeared to be an “executionstyle” murder. It is believed that nothing was stolen from the car and a file containing divorce papers that were handed to her last month were found in the cubbyhole. Gwamanda was a Sweetwaters resident and a teacher at the Umthoqotho High where she taught history and Zulu. She was married and had four children two boys and two girls.

UKZN students march against xenophobia AMIL UMRAW

U

KZNstudentsgatheredintheir hundredsonSundaytoprotest against the wave of xenophobicattacksthatbroughtPietermaritzburg to a standstill. More than 200 students and lecturers rallied together at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Pietermaritz- burg campus. With anti-xenophobia placards in hand, the group made their way from

the library lawn on the main campus, to the commerce section, down to agriculture on Carbis Road and back. March organisers said they will hold another protest next Friday, when they will march from the campus to the Office of the Premier. One of the organisers, Sandile Kheswa, said they held the march because they were tired of nobody doing anything to prevent the xenophobic attacks.

On a mission to beautify PMB AMIL UMRAW ONE man has taken it upon himself to beautify Pietermaritzburg with flowers. Driving along most of the main roads entering the city, motorists may have

noticed a dash of added colour on the roadside a bloom of reds, pinks, yellows and greens. The initiative of brightening up the city with a “companion planting” strategy was a brainchild of horticulturist Mbulaheni

“We think what is happening is wrong. Most foreigners have been in the country for many years. During apartheid, other countries welcomed South Africans, and now when they need us most, we are chasing their people away,” Kheswa said. Pietermaritzburg was plagued with xenophobic violence last Wednesday. Thousands of foreigners were left homeless and more than 50 foreignowned shops were looted.

Hundreds of UKZN students gathered at the Pietermaritzburg campus on Sunday to rally against xenophobic violence which plagued the city last week.

Ashamed by Msunduzi being labelled the dirtiest capital city during a Ward 28 public meeting, Tshivhase, who was appointed at the municipality last year, said he felt it was time for the Pietermaritzburg community to touch, feel and see service delivery. “Companion

planting”, as Mbulaheni describes it, consists of arranging plants and vegeta bles together. The project started in Chota Motala Road where hundreds of flowers and vegetables were planted on the islands from East Street to the Northdale Hospital. Tshivhase said it all began with a call from a Springvale resident who complained of illegal dumping and poor maintenance at a substation. Even though he is in charge of the northern suburbs only, Tshivhase has pledged to spread the project across the city, with plans for other main roads that enter the city centre such as Alan Paton Avenue, Peter Brown Drive, Sweetwaters

We need residents of Msunduzi Municipality to have a sense of ownership and ensure that a clean and safe environment is created,” he added. Tshivhase appealed to residents not to be tempted to pull out the plants. “We need the City of Choice to compete with Toronto in Canada and Dubai and we can only achieve that if we look after our plants. The more beautiful our city looks, the higher the property values will go,” Tshivhase said.

OME of the country’s finest academics have graduated from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, some against all odds to further their education. Bongisiwe Shelembe obtained her Master of Science degree in chemistry, cum laude. Shelembe grew up in rural Msinga in KZN and was one of 11 children in her financially challenged family. Shelembe experienced hardships and challenges at university as she came from a school where English wasn’t the language of instruction. “I would walk around with a dictionary just so I could communicate as I was not proficient in English,” she said. Another graduate started his working career as a security guard in northern KZN. Dr Sipho Buthelezi used the three years he spent in the job to plan the way forward to a better life. He started saving and eventually had enough money to resign from his security-guard position to register at the university. He now has a PhD in public policy. Six mechanical engineering students - Damien Raghubeer, Matthew Woods, Nicholas Witteveen, Peter Sinclair, Saien Rugdeo and Shuvay Singh - part of the team who created an award-winning solar-powered car, graduated with BSc engineering degrees last week. The graduates worked on the 2014 solar car, iKlwa, which came first in the South African category and third overall in the 2014 Pretoria to Cape Town eight-day Solar Car Challenge, covering a distance of 2 418,3kms and racing against teams from all around the world. The UKZN team have since signed up to participate in the 2015 World Solar Car Challenge, scheduled to take place in Australia this year. Hulamin, the major sponsors of iKlwa, has pledged a further R1 million to send the team to Australia as it was so impressed with their performance last year. It will be the first time an African team has entered this international event.

LIFE is miserable for a Mpophomeni woman who, since December, has been living with a foul stench following a burst sewage pipe. Dudu Gumede from EmaRomeni area told Echo she has been reporting the matter to the municipality since last year, but nothing has been done. The problem started when a sewage pipe, connecting four houses, burst last year. A neighbour had even called his own plumber to fix the problem. “The problem started in December after heavy rains and water flooded into my house. Things got worse as I started seeing faeces in front of my house. I reported the matter to the municipality and plumbers were sent to the area where they checked and confirmed that a pipe had broken somewhere. “They promised to come back, but up until now I am still waiting. I reported the matter to the ward councillor, but the problem continues.” Gumede said one of her main concerns is that the situation has become a health hazard as her neighbour’s waste also floods into her house. “No one can bear a foul smell for so long. My younger son developed boils recently and I believe it’s due to the environment I am living in. I don’t know what else to do as I have reported the matter.” Ward 8 councillor Sipho Ndlovu said he is unaware of the matter, but will investigate. “I only know of one house in the area that has a huge stormwater problem, but municipal plumbers are working on it. I will have to investigate the matter as I don’t think someone could live with a burst sewer pipe for this long,” said Ndlovu.

FREEDOM Day is an annual celebration of South Africa’s first nonracial democratic elections in 1994 and is celebrated on April 27. Nompendulo Ngubane spoke to youngsters to find out what the day means to them. PHOTOS: NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

Zakhele Ngubane ‘It always remind me of the long queues at voting stations when South Africans went there to cast their first democratic right to vote. I was still a child, but I have a vivid memory of what was going on. To me this day will always be the day when we were free from the chains of apartheid.’

Thobeka Sibiya ‘It was the day when were said goodbye to inequality and said hello to great education opportunities and other positive activities that black people were not exposed to. It bettered our education and that is the most exciting thing about this day. Thank you to people like Dr Nelson Mandela.’

Smangele Vilakazi ‘It opened closed doors on our side as the youth. We are now exposed to model C schools and we have a choice in education, career oppor tunities and, as the youth, we are given rights.’

Nkosinathi Khumalo ‘To me it means that I am a free South African citizen with so many choices in life. We are the beneficiaries of democracy. Those benefits being freedom of speech, freedom of being proud of my skin colour, freedom of being a born free. Thank you to the people who made it possible, South Africa has a good history.’

Edendale Hospital to be commended I RECENTLY had a nose operation Edendale Hospital. After hearing a lot of negativity regarding this hos pital I was very pessimistic about having the operation. However, due to the pain and discomfort I was experiencing I went to the hospital to be treated. The patient administration sec tion was filled to capacity. I walked in at 6.30am and was expecting to be there until the afternoon. I was seriously mistaken. Never before had I seen such fast, efficient and courteous ser vice — in no time I was being ush ered to the surgical outpatient de partment, and there again the nurses were simply amazing, their efficiency was outstanding. I had my operation done there on 16 April and was discharged the following day. My sincere thanks to Dr Skinner, Dr Govender and Dr Pretorius for their kindness and re assurance and the excellent work they did. To the day and night nurses of female ward 4F, I have never before seen such outstanding work from looking after the patients to the cleaning of the ward, your patience and dedication to your job are fan tastic. Let’s not promote hatred of one another WHAT is happening in our beautiful country regarding the destruction of colonial and apartheid statues at this juncture of our history is wrong. The statues should serve to remindusofpastgenerationalfigures prior to our times and even the existence of our forefathers. I have never seen all the colonial or apartheid figures in question, I have only read about them. The ways employed in dealing with removal of statues is totally wrongandmighthavedireimplication for us as a diverse nation. It is taking us back in terms of multicul-

tural heritage. I wish Echo, as a people’s paper, would conduct research and find out from the young what their opinion is and what is going on in their mind. As far as I understand, this issue needs special attention from relevant authorities. They must deal with it accordingly to avoid racial divisions among South Africans. As young as I am, I would like to see South Africans always at peace with each other as Mandela would have liked to see happening. Those statues played a signifi-

cant role to where we are now, so I believe they should be kept in a certain place so that whomever wants to remind him or herself about them can go there. The fundamental messages that come with them are more important than it is thought by others. History is part of development. Wherever you go, there is history. Let’s not destroy what is ours, we should protect it and preserve it. Let’s not provoke our ancestors by promoting hatred of one another. JM ZUMA Northdale

Respect and consideration needed IT rips my heart into a 1 000 pieces to see the current xenophobic and racist attacks. The idiots involved in such violence need to be brought to justice. There are many forms of peaceful tactics that can be used to resolve problems and the only way we can all coexist is if we compromise and respect one another. You cannot have your bread buttered on both sides. Mostimportantly, peopleoughttoedu cate themselves and come to their senses. Our freedom fighters sought shelter in oth er countries and many foreigners stood by them during the struggle. Many foreigners now seek shelter in South Africa and a lot of them come from either refugee camps or countries with worse conditions. They should not be illtreated. On the contrary, and I’m no expert, but if need be, consider ate quotas should be placed on foreigners coming in, if they are overpopulating our country. Apartheid has long gone. We need to move from racism in all forms or else we will lose our country in a way we haven’t before. SADIYYA KHAN Richmond

Afrophobia must be sternly dealt with DESPITE ongoing efforts by society and the government to curb hate crimes like xenophobia, further stern steps must be taken to address discriminatory violence. Like other forms of crime, xenophobic violence threatens social cohesion and economicgrowth.Perpetratorsofdiscrimi natory crimes especially, frequently go un punished, which sends a message that for eigners, refugees and immigrants can be criticised and attacked with liberty. Stern measures like strengthening and more visible law enforcement, and prose cuting offenders, would help to address hate crimes and send a clear message that xenophobic violence will not be tolerated. Furthermore, strategies must be put in place to help promote peaceful coexis tence between all who live in South Africa. Moreover, a commission must be set up to look at and address the root causes of hate crimes like the current wave of Afro phobic violence we are witnessing. Statements and speeches from politi cal parties and members of Parliament must translate into action. Most importantly, businesses and the government must work together to create job opportunities for the millions who are unemployed and are living in extreme pov erty. ILDLANDS Conservation Trust is appealing to PMB schools to get involved in its Clothes for Life project and collect clothes which can be bartered allowing those in underprivileged communities to earn a living. “There are many women in our communities who do not work because they cannot find a job or they cannot leave their home because of socio-economic reasons. There is also a very real need for good-quality clothing for our underprivileged communities,” said Bronwen Bainbridge, Wildlands Partnerships manager. Wildlands has a base of about 10 000 “green-preneurs” who generate support for themselves through the barter of trees and waste for building materials, small business grants, bicycles and educational support.

Get involved with Wildlands ‘clothespreneurs’ >> Any school or organisation can get involved and collect clothing “Bartering clothing allows these green-preneurs to generate cash from the bundles of clothing they are bartering trees and waste for. They can also clothe themselves and their families by growing trees for Wildlands and collecting waste in their communities.” A portion of the clothing Wildlands receives is donated to disadvantaged schools and non-profit organisations to give to patients seeking help from clinics, or people living in homes and shelters. Any school or organisation can get involved and collect clothing by organising a collection campaign with Wildlands. The public can also dropofftheirbagsofclothesattheHilton office at the Quarry Centre. Schools can use this campaign to

fundraise for their outreach projects. Makro has come on board to sponsor gift vouchers for those who participate and has sponsored clothing. “There is no end date for this initiative. Organisations need to choose how long they would like to run their campaign before Wildlands picks up the bags,” said Bainbridge. Makro is sponsoring vouchers in return for donations and there are also prizes to be won. “There are rewards you will receive for helping local communities and contributing to environmental sustainability,” she added. Timefreight is contributing to the logistical costs of the project which will help Wildlands transport clothing to individuals in need.

IETERMARITZBURG’S Woodlands Secondary School has been chosen to represent South Africa at the 2015 Shanghai Summer Camp in China. One school is chosen to represent South Africa every year at the camp, and this year the honour was bestowed on Pietermaritzburg’s Woodlands Secondary. The camp is an annual event held in Shanghai and hosts pupils from all over the world in an effort to bring different cultures together and learn about the Chinese culture. School principal Dharma Moodley said he was so excited when he heard news from the education department that Woodlands was the school chosen to represent the whole of South Africa. “Thisisgreatforourpupilsandour school and it is truly an honour,” he said. “Woodlands is one of the oldest schools in the area as it is 113 years old. I have been here for 34 years and to see the school’s name pick up again by representing the country is fantastic.” Six pupils from Woodlands Tasneem Ismail, Kivalin Naidoo,

NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

>>nompendulo.ngubane@myecho.co.za IZILOMO zoMgungundlovu FM is a group of community members and loyal listeners of the UMgungundlovu FM community radio station. ChairpersonSphamandlaNgubanesaidthe there are 101 members in the group, that has assisted needy pupils and community members from various areas of UMgungundlovu. These good Samaritans have to dig deep into their pockets to help the poor. Ngubane said the aim of starting the group was to support UMgungundlovu FM. “Weformedthegroupinsameyeartheradio station was opened. “The formation of the group was also aimed at bringing people together in support of the radio station. It looked promising and indeed it was a success. We decided to take it furtherby

introducing our campaigns to help those who can’t help themselves. “We have visited several schools in the city and have helped with uniforms and school shoes. Teachers from the chosen schools identify the needy by giving us a list of them and we assist in any way we can. “It’sthesamewithneedyresidents-theyare identified and we visit them. This also creates a bond between the people [listeners] and the radio station and we are grateful for the support.” Ngubane said they are thankful to the main sponsor, owner and founder of Khayelihle Funeral Services, Muzi Mkhize. “We have other sponsors on board, but Mkhize has been with us when the group was just an idea. The journey continues and we are still on a mission to help. “Hosting live shows also allows interaction with the people,” said Ngubane.

‘Welcome to Gomora’ at Hexagon FROM 22 April to 25 April, the Hexagon Studio Theatre will showcase Welcome to Gomora at 6pm. The play is about a once peaceful town which has been transformed into a paradise for gangsters and rapists. With the people of the town fed up with an incompetent police force, a group of vigilantes try to take justice into their own hands. Led by a former pastor who is seeking revenge for his wife’s death, they rise to restore justice and order in town. Things soon take a turn for the worse, as it becomes evident there is no mob justice

without bloodshed. With the death toll rising, the township is divided into two groups - those who are for the vigilantes and those against them. Yet no one dares to speak until a young man takes it upon himself to stand against the mob. The show is a project for drama and performance studies students, performed with energy and vitality, with vibrant new talent heralding a new generation of performers. Tickets, at the door only, are R40 and R25 for concessions. For inquiries email hexagon@ukzn.ac.za - Supplied

Joyous Celebration Sphumelele Mbambo is going solo after being with the group for seven years.

NOMPENDULO NGUBANE

S

HE is the seed of the 2009 talent show I want To Sing Gospel, created and produced by Thokozani Nkosi. After drawing viewers’ attention with her Zion rhythm songs she joined the Joyous Celebration gospel group. However, her seven-year journey with Joyous Celebration has come to an end as Sphumelele Mbambo is now going solo. SpeakingtoEchoabouther journey Mbambo said she is embarking on journey that is part of her dream. She praised Joyous Celebration for grooming and growing her in the music industry.

“I learnt so much, but most importantly, I found the inner self of Sphumelele as an artist. Dreaming alone is not enough - they say action speaks louder than words. This is exactly what I’m doing. I knew that I was born to be a singer and I know I’m here to help people andservetheirspiritualneeds with music. “Life has taught me that as a person you can rise from any situation. I have been with Joyous Celebration for seven years and I’m grateful for every experience and lesson I have been able to grasp. One of the important factors in life is to never change, just be yourself and by doing that you are being true to yourself,” she said. It is common for artists not to succeed when they take the

solo route, but Mbambo said music lives in her and therefore she won’t have that challenge. “It does happen, but if one is aware of his or her expectations in life nothing will stop that. It is a strength and hunger for success that drives a person to the right channels. Trials and tribulations are always there, but the power of the Almighty covers everything. The songs for my album are ready. I cannot say exactly when my album will be out, but I know that people will enjoy it,” said Mbambo. Mbambo said she loves people and spends a lot of time with friends. She is not shy and believes that nothing beats the power of prayer, and she is the last born child at home.

Women want midlifecrisis cars too IT turns out women are also susceptible to buying midlifecri sis cars, at least according to a survey by Ipsos. It’s a common theory that when a man reaches middle age he will rush to buy the new car he’s had his eyes on years. A survey by global research specialist Ipsos claims to show that women want midlifecrisis cars too. The survey revealed that, on average, one in four respondents were likely to buy a midlifecrisis car – 30% of men and 21% of women. The sexes differed, however,

on the type of vehicle they were likely to buy top pick among men was a sports car (24%), among women an SUV (19%). You might think of a red sports car as the classic midlife car but according to the survey 20% said that they would choose a black vehicle; 19% opt ed for silver or grey. Blue and red were tied on 17%, yellow was dead last with two percent of the vote. The Ipsos survey also showed 29% of men were “feel good” about middle age but only 22% of women. Overall, respondents felt

positive about later life, saying it was “a time for fresh opportuni ties and experiences”. Robyn Farrell, 1st for Women Insurance executive head, said: “Reaching middle age should be atimeofcelebration–you’reold er but wiser and better equipped to deal with all that life throws at you. “This is reflected in your insur ance premium, too, as once you hitthebigfiveohyoucanusually benefit from lower premiums be cause you’re viewed as a more re sponsible driver due to the amount of driving experience you have.” Wheels4Women.

Shooting the Breeze

JERRY BARNES MAYBE all of us saw and witnessed ug ly scenes of xenophobia in many ways last week. Some areas around the city like downtown Copesville, Swapo, Ez inketheni in some parts of Masukwana were badly hit and our foreign brothers were brutally attacked. I am totally against it in many ways. Maybe I am heartbroken because the majorityofthepeoplewhoenjoyedthe attacks were criminal elements and just wanted to loot and fulfil their acts of crime. Talking from personal experi ence and as person who has been for tunate to travel out of our borders many times, I have come to the realisa tion that some of us South Africans are shortsighted or misinformed about foreign nationals in our country.First of all we need to understand that South Africa is on the African continent and Africa belongs to all of us. I remember my first experience when I travelled to Swaziland, Nami bia,Zimbabwe,LesothoandBotswana fornationalsportevents, andforpoliti cal reasons. Our foreign counterparts are always good, positive and welcom ing to all South Africans and spoke vol umes about us as their neighbours. Also any South African who visited, toured or went into exile during the apartheid years was well looked after. Our national teams such as Banyana Banyana (SA senior Women’s team), AmaGlugGlug (SA U23 men’s team),

BafanaBafana(SAseniormen’steam) andevenPSLsideslikeOrlandoPirates, Kaizer Chiefs, Jomo Cosmos and Ma melodi Sundowns, will tell you that 25 years ago to travel to Africa was inter esting and the treatment was always good, except of course the mind game before matches. Some of the local as sociations like the Pietermaritzburg and District Soccer Association (Pad sa) visited Lesotho and were accepted with warm hands. All of us face chal lenges to mend or change the good South African image or local image that has been dented by few a criminal elements. I take my hat off to the way our local SAPS, our municipalities, poli ticians and religious leaders responded to these xenophobic incidents around the city. The fact is that if Pietermaritz burg, the KZN capital, and Durban fail to control or totally eliminate these at tacks, itwillmeanweareunabletolook after our economy and peace. The majority of foreigners around our the city are hardworking business people. They brought economy to us and created jobs for some of us. Others came to South Africa, or to our city, to take their sporting talents to another level, others came to work here. Let’s remember that most of our professional clubs around KZN Mar itzburg United, AmaZulu, Golden Ar rows, Thanda Royal Zulu and even the majorityoftertiaryinstitutes, hospitals and high schools recruited a lot of our foreign brothers or sisters in order to improve lives or to work in South Africa. I encourage local businesses, churches, municipalities, councillors andevenusasindividualstostopxeno phobia and embrace our African broth ers.Letusallliveinpeaceandharmony.

Khama Billiat of Mamelodi Sundowns celebrates his goal with his teammate Thabo Ntete during the Nedbank Cup last 16 match between their side and Platinum Stars last month. It remains to be seen whether the team will celebrate like this when they come up against Vasco Da Gama on Sunday.

OUTH African soccer followers are in for a bumper weekend when the “Competition of Sunrises” - the Nedbank Cup semi-finals - take place. This weekend Ajax Cape Town, SuperSport United, Vasco Da Gama and Mamelodi Sundowns will be vying for a place in the Ke Yona final scheduled for 17 May. The first semi-finals will be a date between Ajax Cape Town and SuperSport United on Saturday at Cape Town’s Athlone Stadium at 8:15pm. Urban Warriors head coach Roger De Sa says their assignment against the Pretoria outfit will be interesting and tough. “SuperSport United will be inter-

The other semi-finals, the second one, is scheduled for Sunday when Vasco Da Gama from the national first division and Cape Town will lock horns with Mamelodi Sundowns at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria. Da Gama’s leading goal scorer Mbulelo Wambi says their approach will be cautious because their opponents are a big team who also want to be in the final. “We respect them as PSL giants, but we know that if we win this, we will already be in the final,” said Wambi. Sundowns head coach Pitso Mosimane believes the only way to overcome the visitors will be to go for the kill from the first whistle because “there are no small teams in the cup games”.

esting visitors. We respect them and we are just lucky this game will be hosted by us. “We will try our best to represent our followers in our back yard in a good way. We are also lucky because we are familiar with weather conditions in Cape Town and our visitors are also likely to find it interesting,” said De Sa. OneofUnited’slong-servingmembers and star defender Thabo September this week told Echo his side will be careful as visitors and expect endless fireworks. “We are expecting a tough one, especially as visitors. We are also expecting them to come at us from all directions and make conditions tough for us. I expect endless fireworks,” said September.
