Xenophobic attacks condemned

KwaZuluNatal Premier Senzo Mchunu (left) and Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba at a media briefing on xenophobic attacks in KwaZuluNatal, Umlazi in particular, which started recently as attackers of foreign nationals said they were heeding Zulu King Zwelithini’s call about two weeks ago in which he reportedly stated: ‘We are requesting those who come from outside to please go back to their countries.’ The king now says the media have ‘dis torted’ his comment that foreigners should leave the country.

ITH Pietermaritzburg as the historical tourist attraction, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) wants the statues of Queen Victoria, Sir Theophilus Shepstone and Mahatma Gandhi removed. However, EFF’s provincial spokesperson Reggie Ngcobo said the party is split into two on the issue. He said that although the removal ofcolonialandapartheid-erastatuesisnotpart of its manifesto, he said that the three statues should be replaced with South Africans who fought for the freedom of South Africa. “The removal of the statues is the opportunist moment because it is not part of our party’s manifesto. We do not support the statues of oppressors.Wewouldliketoseethemremoved and taken away. These statues do not provide a solution in solving the poverty in South Africa. The removal of statues is not that much of a priority however, they should be removed. “However, we believe that there are more pressing issues such as poverty and education facing South Africa and those should be prioritised. Now that the removal of colonial statuesisanationaldebate, wewillspeaktoour two provincial legislature representatives on

how this can be achieved. We will also approach the Heritage Council on this matter,” said Ngcobo. Ngcobo said that the uMgungundlovu district is rich in history and that the people whose statues should be erected include antiapartheid stalwarts Harry Gwala and Moses Mabhida. “There are many other people from different races who contributed towards the South African democracy. The focus should be on South Africans who fought for our freedom. There are other political parties who support the notion that the colonial and apartheid-era statues should be removed,” said Ngcobo. Amafa-Heritage KwaZulu-Natal is the provincial heritage agency which administers heritage matters on behalf of the KZN Provincial government. Amafa’s Ros Devereaux said the removal of statues is a public process which alsoinvolvesapublicparticipationprocessand that after an application has been made for the removal of a relevant statue or statues, Amafa council will look at the pros and cons of such actions. The statue of Queen Victoria and Sir Theophilus Shepstone are in the vicinity of the KZN Legislature building while that of Mahatma Gandhi is in Church Street.

HE Department of Basic Education has rolled out a Book Flood campaign across all provinces in the hopes that it will populate libraries at primary and high schools. According to the National Education Infrastructure Management Systems (NEIMS) report of 2014, only 25% of schools in KwaZulu-Natal have libraries. This refers to the access pupils have to a building or room on the property that houses books. Speaking to Maritzburg Fever Khanyi Dubazana, director of Education Library, Information and Technology Services, said there are 10 malls throughout KZN that will participate in the initiative. Liberty Midlands Mall is the selected mall in Pietermaritzburg and has been running the campaign which ends on 20

April. There have already been large donations made by various bookstores including Exclusive Books and Hargraves Library Services donating R200 000 towards Book Flood.

“Our intention is to promote a culture of reading among pupils across the country and build a nation ofreaders.Researchshowsthatthere is not enough access for pupils to books especially in rural areas. This is what we are

trying to improve on. This in turn will increase the overall annual national assessment percentages,” said Dubazana. Each of the 10 participating malls will stock one primary school and one high school thus 20 schools in the province will be given access to a library by the end of the campaign.

Slangspruit Primary School and Ingqwangele High School have been identified as the schools in the Pietermaritzburg area. The handoverofbookswillbemadeon23April, World Book Day. Gcina Mhlophe, world renowned author known for her storytelling in Zulu and English, was at Liberty Midlands Mall recently to share a story from her latest storybook Zimnandi Ngokuphindwa. “This day was an opportunity to celebrate the joy of books and reading and reflect on ways we can promote books and improve reading levels. The importance of reading and the culture of books need to be instilled in our children. This provides a solid foundation for learning and enhances their knowledge as future leaders,” said Muhammad Varachia, Liberty Midlands Mall Centre manager. There are green boxes placed at the information kiosk at the mall, CUM Books or Bargain Books where the public is encouraged to drop off their books suitable for children at both primary and high school.

S of 1 May, children under the age of three will be required to only travel in a car if they are secured in a car seat. This is required by a new regulation of the National Road Traffic Act. Motorists who have children under the age of three unrestrained in their vehicle will be fined. This comes after some motorists refuse to take seriously the constant warnings and calls by emergency services and authorities to have children properly secured in vehicles. Speaking to Maritzburg Fever Caro Smit of South Africans Against Drunk Driving (SADD), said the organisation has been working long towards getting this specific regulation passed. that car crashes are the leading cause of injury and/or deaths among children under the age of five in South Africa. “ArriveAlivesaysthatcorrectly installed car seats can reduce the risk of deaths by 70% in the infant age, and 47% to 54% in children aged one to four.” Daily, toddlers can be seen jumping on back seats, hanging out of windows and sitting on passenger’s laps. “Upon speaking to parents, some will tell you they never grew up with child car seats and survived. Parents may also tell you that their children do not like being restrained and cry constantly. Some parents insist you not tell them what to do with their children,” said Chitra Bodasing, ER24 spokesperson. Bodasing said that emergency servicesattendtocollisionsinvolving children every week. “The majority of unrestrained children are flung out of the vehicle

Smit has just returned from a meeting in Morocco where a plan for 2015 was drawn up for the global campaign. “We will be working with the same 17 schools on a project called #SaveKidsLives with regards to road safety. We will look at seatbelt use, as well as pupil visibility, alcohol abuse and other relevant road- safety issues. Last year, SADD distributed 20 newcarseatsforchildrenatWoodlands Primary and TPA School in Northdale. “We call on people to donate their old unwanted seats to SADD and we will get them refurbished and handed out to needy families,” said Smit.

The project fits well as it will be driven by people living with HIV/Aids. We offer donations to corpo rates, give them business startup kits and provide them with capacitybuild ing trainings in selfsustaining projects. Our mandate is to ensure a generation of local employment opportunities.

ON a mission to reduce unemployment and inequality, the KwaZuluNatal Christian Council (KZNCC) adopted a farming project in Bishopstowe in a bid to provide sustainability to underprivi leged communities. KZNCC CEO Dr Douglas Dziva said R2 million has been injected into the project by the Interchurch Develop ment Corporation (ICCO) in partner ship with the Norman Hudson Trust and Umgungundlovu District munici pality. Speaking to Echo, Dr Dziva said: “Churches are moving beyond just Sunday prayers. We want to make a contribution towards curbing inequali ty, unemployment and increase food security. There will be seven farms producing vegetables, pigs and chickens. These farms will operate on a 10 year freelease programme, and 85 people will be employed.” Project manager of ICCO Musa Zakwe said the organisation sup ports NGO’s in the sectors of health, HIV and Aids, smallhold farmers and peace building. “We have decided to support the project seeing that the church is going all out to help people to become self sufficient through agriculture and capaci tybuilding. THE National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) stated that it will continue to fight for the rights of the Midlands Media Centre (MMC) Private Hospital workers following a deadlock in wagenegotiationsbetweentheunionandthehospi tal. This resulted in hospital staff resorting to protected strike action last week Friday. By Monday afternoon the two parties had not reached consensus. Nehawu’s provincial secretary Phakama Ndunakazi said the threemonth negotiations with hospital management have proven to be fruitless. “The employer did not agree with our demands. We went to the Commission for Conciliation, Media tion and Arbitration, but the matter was not resolved. “Right after the strike started last Friday, the hos pital applied for a lockout of employees who were on strike. We are still waiting for management to tell us when we can meet to reach a conclusion in these wage negotiations,” said Ndunakazi. Ndunakazi told the Maritzburg Fever reporter that most of the hospital employees cannot afford medical aid because of their low wages. MMC marketing and public relations officer Kav ith Harrilall said that the company’s salary increase, which ranges from 6.8% to eight percent, effective on 1 March this year, is “generous” compared to the current and projected inflation rate. “MMC is disappointed that at this stage the wage negotiations between the hospital and Nehawu have reached a deadlock. MMC’s offer is based on various salary brackets as well as allowances and company contributions towards staff benefits. “MMCrecognisesNehawuasanimportantstake holder in the employeremployee relationship. However, a defensive lockout will be implemented to ensure good order during the protected strike action,” said Harrilall in a statement. Harrilall added: “MMC is of the respectful view that strike action is not an effective way to settle thisimpasse.Negotiationanddialogueserveasideal tools from which parties may reach sustainable terms of settlement. “MMC management and the board of directors assure all stakeholders that adequate contingency measures have been implemented to minimise the impact of the strike on patients, visitors, doctors, service providers and staff.”

Project manager for Vulindlela Development Association (VDA) Them bi Khuzwayo said there are structures in thecommunitythatshouldbecontacted with regards to the Duma matter. “As VDA our project covers the Emafakatini area, but there are channels that need to be followed. “ Again with such cases, community structures, such as the ward councillor, care givers and ward committee members must be contacted so that people with special needs, such as Lilo, can be assisted,” said Khuzwayo. Bishop Minor Ngcobo: ‘This is an in sult to Christiani ty. From what I know as Chris tians, we live dif ferent lives and we must portray a good image to the public. It’s a pity be cause we know Nala as a Christian and suddenly that has changed.’

Reverend Bethwell Zulu:

‘He started by taking a second wife while he was a Christian. That alone was the opposite of Christianity. I can’t make a clear understanding of what his intentions are. In my opin ion I think Dr. Nala is one of the pastors of the last days. The Bible warned us about these incidents and that is exactly what is happen ing.’

JERRY BARNES HILLVIEW FC MUST COME CLEANJERRY BARNES

I MUST say I was very happy to hear that the Hillview FC Easter tournamentatNewholmesgrounds was going to take place again this year. I believe this wellorganised event has become one of the crowd pullers. I remember many years ago when one of the long serving and hard working members of Pietermaritzburg and District Soccer Associations (Padsa) Kay Parus and a few others pulled out from this organisation and started their own event away from Northdale Stadium. I was also there to support them and also attended their event from day one. Although I was told or understood that there were a few differences between Padsa officials and Hillview FC management at that time, I personally did not see Parus and his group as rebels or a splinter organisation. I saw a competition and another development of our local soccer. I also saw more options for players, teams and local media houses. I actually still have a picture that I took during the first tournament at Newholmes grounds of a certain

junior team from Glenwood. ThetwoplayersthatIremember in the photo are Brendan Bezuidehout and Papi Petersen, who were still very young and playing for the under 12 side. By the way these two players are grown up men now and one of them is happily married. ThisweekIwasverydisappoint ed when I heard that the same Hillview FC Easter tournament allowed one of the local profession als PSL and Chippa United player Enver Wiltwer to play for Hillview Old Boys. Why allow a professional to come compete against amateur players? It was also alleged that a certain player was given marching orders (red card) during the games but was later allowed to carry on playing after paying a fine. So in short, he paid money to clear his name and to be reinstated into the event. Oh what a mistake! As event organisers, Hillview FC officialswerejusttoowrongandout of line to change or overlook the red card issued by the referee for a disciplinary reason, just to make money, if all this is true. Ibelieveeventslikethesearenot money making scheme but the development of the local game and an exercise to unearth unknown talent. I am also aware that Hillview FC opponents and certain unhappy officials out there on the opposite side may cook up some negative stories or look for faults in the event, just to paint a black picture. I would like to profer a platform to Hillview FC officials to come out clean, explain and give us a fair and honest answer about what exactly happened. My email address is jerryb.barnes228@gmail.com or 083 521 9553.

TALKING FOOTBALL

THABO DLADLA

T

HE number of players representing KZNinthePSLandnational teams have declined over the past few years. The midlands region in particular has not done well both in youth competitions and club football. People should also remember that KZN is the biggest province in South Afri ca. Numbers on their own do not help if people are not doing the right things. Pietermaritzburg is represented only by five players in the professional league compared to over twenty five a few years back. The lack of facilities is not helping the situation. I firmly believe that authorities are letting down the young people in our district. We have worse football facilities compared to the apartheid era. This is sad considering that the majority of footballers are young black boys and girls. League matches are played on gravel fields. Why do municipalities find it difficult to prepare fields for weekend fixtures i.e. cut grass and mark the lines? We cannot talk service delivery and fail the young people on just simple things like marking the fields.

We have not promoted any team to theNFDinthepast15years.Thecalendar of competitions is disadvantaging our clubs. Planning is nonexistent. Football is played for four to five months. We lack the interest and the will to do the correct things. SAB clubs have to play on a Saturday and Sunday. Do football authorities understand the implication of this to the health of our young people. Playing a single 90minutes match in a weekend is a challenge in itself. Technically, this also has a lot of implications. It develops slow football and yet internationally intensity is critical. Refereeing also needs some attention. I have been very impressed with most of the guys in our local SAB league. They do honest jobs although they can do with more and better training. It is important that cheating is removed out of KZN football. Bribing of refereesdoesnothelpimprovethegame. Referees themselves should understand the implications of dishonesty in their careers. KZN does not have referees in the two top tiers of South African foot ball. We also do not have people featur ing in international competitions. I would like to encourage those honest guys to carry on with their good work.Coaching itself need to improve if our young players are to reach interna tional standards. Football, just like schooling, requires lots of dedication from all parties. It is unfortunate that currently South African children do not have proper support structures both at home and within communities. We live in a society where the interests of adults come first. We expect someone else to look after our children. Unzima lo mthwalo.

NE of KwaZuluNatal’s PSL hopefuls AmaZulu - are prepared to go all the way in their bid to avoid relegation. Usuthu’s hard-working and seasoned defender Marc Van Heerden says although his team seems to be deep in relegation and fighting an impossible battle, the good signs are there. “What is nice about us is that we are playing well. Also the mentality and vibe in thecampisverypositive. We are not going to give up, this is soccer and anything is possible. “What ever happens, we are prepared to fight all the way until the final whistle. I personally believe we still stand a chance to change the situation,” said Van Heerden. Usuthu last night played against Polokwane City at KwaMashu’s Princess Magogo Stadium and there was

The local PSL outfit, Maritzburg United, will travel to face Bloemfontein atKaizerSebotheloStadium on Sunday at 3pm United’s experienced and evergreen midfielder Kurt Lentjies feels the Team of Choice stands a good chance to hang in the top eight bracket because it’s their aim. Lenjties agrees that their trip to the Free State won’t be easy or a walk in the park but they are prepared to fight for points. “Look, to play Celtic at home is always a tough assignment but we are prepared to take them on,”said Lentjies. As visitors to the Free State, United’s players will have to have nerves of steel because vocal Celtic supporters can be intimidating. SOUTH Africans will have to do without taking part in the next All Africa Games after failing on Saturday. The SAU23 team failed to qualify for this year’s Africa’s event to be held in Congo. Most of the South Africans had a lot of expectations for the U23 outfit who thought their earlier qualification matches were smooth sailing. Bafana Bafana head coach and former U23mentorEphraim“Shakes”Mashabathis week said the SA team was “just unlucky and sometimes the game is cruel”. Duringthematch the national U23 Black Extreme men’s team made a late rally but it was a question of too little too late as they failed to qualify.
