Ever since I can remember, it was always Baguio. My first road trip (I think I was around 5) was in Baguio and I still have a vivid memory of pine trees and being perpetually cold. Years after that, a revisit to Baguio consisted of an awkward horseback ride at Wright Park (I fell!) and a disastrous banca ride at Burnham (I fell again!). I was not only cold, I was shivering wet. Then high school came. My bestfriends Will and Kenford were my Baguio ‘besties’. Will’s vacation home in Balacbac has one of the best Baguio sceneries. And we would just sit there for hours until it was time to sleep. Then came the ‘rendezvous’ years. Instead of entering my class in DLSU, I would enter the bus going to Baguio early in the morning. I will be in Baguio around lunch, grab some bite in one of the carenderias, walk around Burnham and Session Road, buy some peanut brittle and strawberry jams (there were no ukay-ukay stalls yet), and ride the bus back to Manila. I was home by 10 p.m. Then came the ‘workshop’ years. I was enrolled in a poetry class for my Master’s Degree in Creative Writing under National Artist Dr. Cirilo F. Bautista. We were billed in Teacher’s Camp and we would all haunt ourselves with ghost stories. When we were not doing that, we were visiting writers and artists (I got to meet another National Artist, BenCab!) and even attended a poetry reading with Cordilleran writers. Years later, Dr. Bautista and I would travel together to Baguio to visit his home there and I was very amazed with his book collection and the small corner upstairs where he used to write his poems. When I was involved with this magazine, Baguio never left my mind. There were numerous times when Baguio was the destination, or a jump-off point to Sagada, or the Mountain Province. My most recent trip to Baguio happened two weeks before Kenford finally migrated to the US in the last week of October. Together with Will, we did the Baguio trip like the old times, like when we were still young. We took the early morning bus and arrived in Baguio in time for lunch. It was a memorable trip, made more comfortable with our stay at Le Monet. We revisited old haunts, tried new restaurants (such as this wonderful Korean buffet place), and had a blast reminiscing our Baguio stories amid the cool crisp weather – but we also had our eyes in the future, how we have to move on in our lives and embark on new adventures. But there’s one thing that is constant… which is our friendship, and of course, Baguio.
