FOREWORD

olourful, worldly and dynamic! Every year, Maastricht’s international personality is always extra visible during André Rieu’s world-renowned Vrijthof concerts. The Maastricht-born violinist and orchestra leader welcomes visitors from all over the globe in a warm bath of hospitality and makes them feel at home in our lovely city on the Meuse.

Maastricht and André Rieu have been inextricably linked for over 10 years and as far as I am concerned, it can stay that way - because when André Rieu performs, the city is all about this special series of concerts. Let this André Rieu City Guide help you navigate through our fantastic city. It is a city of centuries-old history, but has always maintained an eye towards the future: a city with trendy aspects while also upholding the grandeur of our past at every corner and on every square. The best, most interesting shops, restaurants and sights are listed in this guide. Enjoy more than just André’s music: also be refreshed by this international university city with its charming centre and grand atmosphere. Maastricht is located in the heart of Europe; it was here that the European Un-

ion saw the light in 1992 thanks to the Maastricht Treaty. In 2017, we will have a major celebration for its 25-year anniversary. Maastricht lives and breathes Rieu, and that is something I am very proud of. I am honoured to be able to experience André Rieu’s concerts as Maastricht’s new mayor. This month, I will definitely be enjoying the music and ambiance on our country’s most beautiful square. I wish you a lovely evening at Vrijthof and a fantastic visit to our city. Maastricht welcomes the world!

ANDRÉ RIEU ‘IMMORTALISED’

I

n May of this year, André Rieu was honoured twice in one day: quite the joyous occasion for Rieu. First, the first scientific book written about Rieu’s success was presented at Museum aan het Vrijthof, followed by the unveiling of the plaque at Rieu’s childhood home in Maastricht Municipal Park.

Artist Désiree Tonnaer made a city map from stone with a bronze ‘stamp’ featuring Rieu’s signature on top. “The stamp is a reference to the mark he’s left on the city,” the artist said. Mayor Onno Hoes was pleased to be able to present the plaque, which was made in honour of the musician’s 65th birthday. The unveiling of the plaque was accompanied by the drum and bugle corps of the Sainte Cécile Orchestra from Eijsden. André Rieu was especially honoured by the plaque at the white house along the Jeker River, in the municipal park. “The city council didn’t have to do that, but I am certainly impressed. It is definitely a sign of recognition. And it’s supposed to be around for centuries.” The book on the Maastricht musician’s success, published by Maastricht University, focuses

on the deeper reasons behind his success. According to the writers, it is mainly because of his ability to appeal to his audiences’ sensitive side. He brings the music back to its original essence. The researchers have particularly noticed his open communication with the audience in the concert halls and out on the squares. “Where many contemporary classical music ensembles struggle to reach a wide enough audience, André Rieu manages to win over the hearts of the masses with his heart-felt way of playing and performing,” one of the researchers said. André Rieu commented on the book with an amusing remark: “They usually write books on people who have been dead for a while; in my case, I still get to experience it.”

HISTORY OF VRIJTHOF CONCERTS

A

ndré Rieu had been thinking about giving concerts at the Vrijthof in the centre of his hometown Maastricht for a while, but it took quite some time to organise the events the way he had pictured them. He needed the assistance of the municipality and the entrepreneurs at the Vrijthof, who had to give ‘their square’ to their most famous inhabitant for a couple of nights. In 2005, everything was arranged to start a remarkable tradition.

It started with three concerts, now in 2015 there are seven concerts at the Vrijthof. Every year more and more people from abroad come to Maastricht for these special concerts. Now about half of the visitors come

from outside the Netherlands and Belgium. They come from " everywhere, says Pierre Rieu, CEO of AndrÊ Rieu Travel. We " have people from Brazil, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and from

many countries in Europe. Especially from the United Kingdom we may say welcome to many fans. Most of them have seen my father in a concert in their own land, but they think that the Vrijthof-concerts are the most special of all.” André Rieu doesn’t just bring his ‘normal’ program in Maastricht, he also invites artists from all over the world to join him on stage, from Trini Lopez to Jermaine Jackson. And every year there is a kind of ‘warming up’ with the Orchestra band Sainte Cécile. Sainte Cécile from Eijsden plays at the Vrijthof just before André Rieu and his orchestra get on stage. More than a hundred mu-

sicians walk down the square and pass the sidewalk cafés and create a great atmosphere. Rieu invites this orchestra band for a reason: only the best is good enough. Sainte Cécile won the World Music Contest in Kerkrade in the world division for the second time in 2013 and was crowned champion of the Netherlands many times. André Rieu likes the Vrijthofconcerts very much. It is my " hometown, that gives an extra warm feeling. And because the square is not too big and people are sitting on the terraces, you get a wonderful atmosphere."

13

ANDRÉ RIEU IS PLEASED WITH HIS LIMBURG ROOTS According to André Rieu, part of his success is due to the fact that he was born and raised in Limburg. “We have a very rich culture here, which can really shape you, especially at a young age. For example, I remember often going to church with my parents as a child. Holy Mass like that can be very impressive in Catholic traditions, especially during Easter and Christmas. It’s not just about religion: there’s a lot of music, singing, the church is nicely decorated and such. In the Catholic church in particular, celebrations like that also tend to be a bit theatrical, which I always loved.” 16

André Rieu was influenced not only by religion, but also by Limburg’s broad music and folk culture, which has longstanding traditions. “Almost every town and city neighbourhood has its own brass band or concert orchestra. People are raised with music from an early age, so it’s kind of in our genes. It also has a lively aspect to it; it’s optimistic. I think that definitely has something to do with why my concerts are always such a party. It’s a party for us too.” André Rieu himself is an ambassador of the World Music Festival (WMC) in Kerkrade, where

top music ensembles from all over the world come together every four years. “It is important for young people to learn how to play an instrument, so as to be able to play music themselves and not just learn how to use a computer.” It is precisely Limburg’s international location which has made it possible for André Rieu to lead an entire international orchestra. “The Province of Limburg, with Maastricht as its capital, is located right between Belgium and Germany. France is not far off either. When I take a walk around my house, I can go 1 kilometre and end up in Belgium. Shoppers at the market in Maastricht are spoken to in French, English or German, if they want. That’s how it’s always been. The Maastricht dialect has many French and German influences as well.

Because of that, we feel at home anywhere in the world, and easily make contact with the audience.” Many members of the Johan Strauss Orchestra are from the area, but that includes Limburg as well as Belgium and Germany. “It’s easy for everyone, since our studio in Maastricht is closeby. They haven’t had to move and can keep living in their own country. That international aspect is in our blood. That’s why we don’t feel like we live on the edge of the Netherlands; instead, we feel like we live in the centre of Europe. No matter where in the world I’m on stage, it is always with great pride that I tell the audience I’m from Maastricht, Limburg. And yes, that’s in ‘Holland’, even if it is all the way near the border.”

ANDRÉ RIEU THE MOST SUCCESSFUL VIOLINIST

A

ndré Rieu is the most successful violinist of our time and also a conductor, composer and charming entertainer. He has sold more than 35 million CDs and DVDs and his live concerts attract an audience of about 1 million people each year. He’s been among Billboards Top 10 selling artists for the last ten years.

André Rieu was born in Maastricht into a musical family. His father was the chief conductor of the Limburg Symphony Orchestra. André started to play the violin at the age of five. In 1978 he founded his first own ensemble: “Het Maastrichts Salon Orkest“. In 1987 the Johann Strauss Orchestra which consists of about fifty musicians. Many of whom are still with him today. Their breakthrough came in 1994 with the CD “From Holland with Love” and Shostakovitch’s Second Waltz which went straight to the top of Holland’s Single Charts. André and his Johann Strauss Orchestra have been touring the world since the midnineties, performing all over the world, e.g. in Germany, England,

France, Scandinavia, the Baltics, Romania, Poland, the USA, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, China, Singapore, Japan, South Africa and Australia, where he played his biggest concerts ever in front of an audience of 43.000 in Melbourne as part of the World Stadium Tour with the beautiful setting of a rebuild Schönbrunn Castle. André has been married for more than fourty years to his childhood sweetheart Marjorie. The couple has two sons, Marc, who is a painter and Pierre, who is Vice President of André Rieu Productions.

21

THE PAINTINGS OF MARC RIEU

T

his year, Marc Rieu, eldest son of André and Marjorie Rieu, will again be exhibiting several of his paintings during the Vrijthof concerts, in the Theater aan het Vrijthof.

The 36-year old painter has been fascinated by art since childhood. As a toddler, he would get the catalogues out of his parents’ bookcases to admire all the lovely images. In 1990 - the year of Vincent van Gogh - he made the definitive decision to do something with art. He studied Art History and Archaeology in Nijmegen, a degree he completed with a thesis on Romantic period in 2006. In addition, he took painting classes here and there, as his interest in the practice of painting continued as well. Now, he has been a full-time painter for years, with a focus on imaginative landscapes. He calls himself a suggestive illusionist; he paints suggestive (dreamy, romantic) works in which he enchants reality using his brush as a magic wand - hence his selfcoined artistic movement “suggestive illusionism”. His work is often on display in galleries in the Netherlands and abroad. 22

He is also an ambassador for the foundation "Kunst van het Kijken” [The Art of Looking]. This foundation aims to provide more of a stage to mentally and physically challenged artists. His motto: “Pay no mind to common sense, look with your heart and enjoy what you see!" Hendrick

Avercamp (1585-1634) was the Netherlands’ first ‘handicapped' artist; he was a deaf-mute but that did not stop him from creating exquisite Dutch winter tableaus, which ‘strike the rest of the world dumb’ today. Let us enjoy all the beauty being made in the same way.”

THE HISTORY OF MAASTRICHT and musketeer d’Artagnan

P

erhaps he did not get the most visible location in Maastricht, but it is a nice one with quite a bit of foliage. In solid bronze he stands at the city wall in the park, forever ready to draw his sword. The musketeer d’Artagnan perished here in 1673, in service of the French Sun King Louis XIV, who conquered the city. He grew into a kind of ambassador of Maastricht’s history.

26

The Meuse’s geographical location has resulted in Maastricht being the stage for defense and conquests for centuries. Maastricht is a fortified city with walls and a fort. Those conquests started as early as 50 B.C. when the Romans drove out the Celts and built a bridge over the river. For the record, that is not the old Servaasbrug that connects the two parts of the city - that one is from the thirteenth century. This bridge was named after Saint Servatius, the bishop who came to Maastricht in the fourth century A.D. His basilica and accompanying treasure chamber have attracted pilgrims and visitors for many centuries. You can read the history from the towers while looking out over the city from Mount Saint Peter. The oldest, Romanesque churches are those of the Saint Servatius basilica (allegedly built on the grave of Saint Servatius and four Merovingian churches) of which construction started around the year 1000, just like the basilica of OnzeLieve-Vrouw-Tenhemelopening, popularly referred to as Slevrouwe, to which people come from near and far to light a candle. The redpainted tower of the Sint Janskerk, the Gothic church of the Protestant community – with frescos from the fifteenth century – is a bit more recent, built in the thirteenth century.

Throughout the course of history, more and more towers were built in the city. The most striking tower is that of the Bonnefanten Museum, designed by Italian architect Aldo Rossi, built in 1995. Throughout the course of history, Maastricht was often fought over. The Spanish settled in the city, followed by the French. The forts, the remains of the ranks and the city walls are a symbol of Maastricht’s military strategic function. One can look out over the city from Mount Saint Peter, count the years by means of the towers and go to the city centre to find all kinds of treasures and remains of the rich history of the city. Around 1800, all residents of Maastricht became French citizens, which will have pleased d’Artagnan - though he will probably have turned in his grave, wherever that may be, when the city was taken by the Dutch in 1814. During this summer 2015 a movie will be launched with the title ‘Code M, the sword of d’Artagnan’, a modern interpretation of his history.

THE LIBERATION OF MAASTRICHT

T

he life of André Rieu and his family was strongly influenced by the Second World War. Remarkable, especially seeing the fact that the Maastricht violinist was born years after the liberation.

For history buffs, it’s easy to remember: in Maastricht, the Second World War lasted exactly four years, four months and four days. There are still residents of Maastricht who can remember 30

how the little city on the Meuse River was liberated in September 1944 - as the first Dutch city by the 30th Infantry Division, also called the ‘Old Hickory Division’, like it was yesterday.

A square in Maastricht was named after this important American military unit, where the liberation of Maastricht is commemorated annually at a special liberation tree.

1944. Within mere hours, the Americans freed the now so bustling city district of the Germans, who calmly left the city on foot or by bicycle without putting much of a fight.

The Maastricht district Wyck (across the Meuse River) was first in line on 13 September

It must have been quite an odd phenomenon: the eastern banks of the Meuse celebrated 31

excitedly, while it was pitch-dark in the still occupied western part of the city (with Onze Lieve Vrouweplein, the Vrijthof and the Markt): a bizarre situation which wouldn’t last long. The next day, on 14 September 1944, the Old Hickory Division had control over all of Maastricht, a theme that was commemorated in detail in the summer of 2014 with an extensive programme for the 70-year anniversary of the liberation of Maastricht.

knowledge of the Second World War, especially thanks to the stories he was told by his parents. Stories of brave American soldiers who went through countless hardships during the advance over the European mainland. Many of them had lost comrades leading up to the liberation of Maastricht, or would lose them in the tough months still to come.

Though André Rieu was born more than five years after the liberation of Maastricht (on 1 October 1949, to be exact) he grew up – like many children of his generation – with much

The family of André’s wife Marjorie also spoke of the foreign soldiers, who had risked their lives to rescue the Netherlands from German tyranny, with enormous gratitude and respect. 33

Marjorie’s parents met in Maastricht. Her Jewish father fled from Berlin to the Netherlands in the ’30s for fear of the upcoming Nazism. The only thing he owned was a briefcase with records from that time. During the war, he went into hiding and stayed with Marjorie’s mother, who was part of the resistance. In 2013, one of André’s concerts at the Vrijthof was given on Dutch Veterans’ Day. To show how much he appreciates young people fighting for peace and freedom, he invited 3,500 veterans and their partners and guides to come to his concert on the famous square on Saturday 29 June of the same year. The

soldiers which included the elderly as well as young soldiers - got more than just a special seat; they were put in the limelight by André himself. André’s son and production manager Pierre maintains the memory of the war and the liberation in his own way: he collects vehicles of the Allied forces and hopes to be able to put them in a museum someday. Parts of his collection are often included in exhibitions.

Valkenburg as small cozy town Valkenburg is a small but lovely town with a great history. It’s only 10 minutes by car from Maastricht. You find historical walls and towers. And it has some nice locations. For example Thermae 2000. Ever since 1987, when high above on the Cauberg, the source of the ‘40,000-year-young’ medical mineral water has been discovered, Valkenburg has been allowed to use the add-on ‘healing spa’ before its name. 38

In 1998, on the summit of the mountain Cauberg, immediately beside the ultramodern Holland Casino*, as a supplement to the spa complex Thermae 2OOO*, a health resort park was established that boasts vast gardens.

South-Limburg: More than just a short break

A short break in South Limburg - you have to be an early riser for this because there is so much to do and experience. Decision-making may be difficult at times. Exciting marl caves in Valkenburg and the labyrinth on the Vaalserberg, magical theme parks, zoos like the GaiaZOO in Kerkrade, where the animals can even partly run free, flowering gardens and spacious parks, stunning culture and monuments, water sports on the River Meuse and skiing in Europe’s largest indoor ski arena and, and, and … Museums, galleries and studios History and culture are there in South Limburg in abundance. For centuries, the area had been a bone of contention of emperors, kings and bishops, evidence of which can be found today in the numerous museums and galleries. Visit South Limburg and discover art, history and culture, to experience up close and personal and to participate in. For details, please also see our website www.southlimburg.com. Land of castles and fortresses Of the hundreds of castles and palaces that have shaped its landscape in earlier times, South Limburg still boasts a lot of them that have been very carefully restored. Thus, it is possible for the ‘common people ’to visit those‘ noble fortresses’. Just come and explore the beautiful castles and palaces that adorn the landscape.

Marl caves and grottos South Limburg is largely dominated by marlstone caves. Especially around the Valkenburg area, you can find the 250 kmlong underground passages that have made it famous. The caves are also used to reconstruct a bygone age - a copy of a coal mine and a reconstruction of the Roman catacombs, for instance. But there are also many other activities to be enjoyed, such as underground Christmas markets, survival and cycling tours and mountain bike rides are all being held here, offering visitors the unique South Limburg experience.

Euregio –Pleasure, European diversity style This southernmost part of Limburg is surrounded on all sides by foreign countries - Belgium and Germany. The cities of Aachen, Liege and Hasselt are just a stone’s throw away from each other and we would like to invite you to take a trip there. Further information on this is available on our website www.southlimburg.com.

FAVOURITE SPOTS ANDRÉ RIEU Favourite spot Vrijthof, because you can really breathe the flair of this beautiful city here. People can relax in front of the beautiful Patrician houses and the view of the Servatius Basilica is so beautiful. Maastricht has about 40 churches. day within two hours (laughs). But you will find so many beautiful little creative shops in the city center. Just take your time to stroll around and you will find gifts for your friends and family, antiques, clothes and souvenirs. MUSEUMS

Bonnefanten Museum Since its opening, the Bonnefanten Museum has been a wonderful addition to Maastricht’s skyline. The building was designed by Italian architect Aldo Rossi, who regarded the museum as a ‘viewing factory’. The museum’s collection comprises old, modern and contemporary art and has a varying exhibition programme. Visitors can view the newest collections of Old Masters with a new focus on Early Italian and Dutch painting. The museum also has a mediaeval sculpture collection, comprising many statues from the 14th to the 16th century. For more information, please visit www.bonnefanten.nl

Museum aan het Vrijthof As a tribute to André Rieu, Museum aan het Vrijthof is organising the exhibition “Liefde voor Detail” [Love for Detail]. Have a look at the personal and musical life of the King of the Waltz. Famous items from Rieu’s concerts are to be exhibited at the museum. The theme “Love for Detail” reflects Rieu’s enthusiasm and perfectionism. Experience how Rieu selects his music and how the famous costumes are designed. WYCK the trendiest part of Maastricht

Over the past years, the Wyck district has developed a lot and is currently seen as the trendiest district within the city of Maastricht. Located on the east bank of the Meuse River, Wyck has managed to maintain its unique personality yet has also kept up with the times. As such, an interesting mix has come into being of many family-run shops in the traditional atmosphere, such as butchers, tea rooms, antique shops and fashion boutiques. A lot of new, trendy shops have come to Wyck as well. There are many very hip shops for a 62

particular clientele and real ‘highend’ top locations as well, which attract international customers, such as shops selling jewellery, watches, and exclusive glasses. Countless lovely restaurants and specialist shops complete the mix, causing Wyck to be seen more and more as the Parisian district of Maastricht. The district lives, bustles, and is home to constant motion. Cross the oldest Roman St. Servaasbrug and discover it yourself.

WMC SPREADS ITS WINGS WITH ANDRÉ RIEU AS ITS PATRON

I

t isn’t for a while, but preparations for the 17th edition of the World Music Festival (WMC) in 2017 are in full swing. André Rieu has been a patron of the world-renowned wind music festival since 2013. It is a festival in which Limburg’s borderless reputation as a wind music province receives as much attention as the international uniting dimension of music, marching and show parades.

64

In Kerkrade, the universal power of expression of music is celebrated with a notable main role for young talent. With programmes like WMC Young Generation, the organisation is building bridges between the established order and talented upcoming musicians. WMC Kerkrade brings together culture and hospitality and provides young people the opportunity to develop within a professional environment. For the WMC, the development of wind music in Limburg and the Euregion is as much a key factor as the developmental process of global wind music. The WMC is leading in that area, and is seen as the top musical experience for both amateurs and professionals alike. WMC Kerkrade and André Rieu share a common belief in the connective power of music. Music literally crosses borders and speaks the language of the heart. André Rieu has proven that music breaks down borders, from Australia to Romania. Where there is music, people will come together. It can provide a valuable connection between people who understand each other, regardless of each other’s descent, political views or religious beliefs. Furthermore, André Rieu has

worked for years to introduce young people to music. André Rieu believes in music. André Rieu believes in youth. WMC Kerkrade identifies with a universal celebration of and participation in music. Every four years, people from all four corners of the earth come to Kerkrade to make music and have fun with kindred spirits. The relationship between André Rieu and the WMC goes way back. The WMC Kerkrade wishes everyone lots of musical enjoyment at André Rieu’s spectacular concerts at Vrijthof in Maastricht! In 2017, you are cordially invited to come to Kerkrade for the 17th World Music Festival, from 2 July - 30 July on various stages, in the Parkstad Limburg Stadium and in Kerkrade’s completely renovated city centre. But before then, various concerts will be held leading up to 2017. So keep an eye on WMC Kerkrade! For more information, please visit: www.wmc.nl

MAASTRICHT city of international studies The international nature of Maastricht is displayed in the range of courses offered by its study programmes. From Maastricht University to the United World College, the spectrum is very broad and very cross-border oriented. That is typical for a city which was always internationally oriented, and it is with good reason that the most international art fair in the world is held here. Maastricht University First of all, there is Maastricht University, a relatively young university preparing to celebrate its 40-year anniversary. In quite a short time, Maastricht University has grown into one of the Netherlands’ main universities and has also ranked among top universities internationally; the figures speak for themselves. MU has over 16,000 students, of which nearly half are from abroad, and from no less than 108 different countries. With 17 Bachelor programmes and 50 Master programmes, MU offers 66

a very wide range of courses. Furthermore, ‘project-oriented education’ was implemented here from the beginning, meaning that studying at MU has a strong focus on practice. The fact that almost all education at MU is given in English shows how international this university really is. It has had a major influence on the city of Maastricht. The presence of so many young students from so many countries has given it a unique and contemporary dynamic. www.maastrichtuniversity.nl

Maastricht School of Management (MSM) Founded in 1952, Maastricht School of Management (MSM) is one of the oldest and most international business schools in the Netherlands. Attracting students from across the world, from emerging and developing economies in particular, it offers research-driven and internationally accredited programmes in management, including the MaastrichtMBA, a joint initiative of Maastricht School of Management and Maastricht University School of Business and Economics (SBE). Other programmes include the Master of Science in Management and Engineering (with RWTH Aachen), and the Master of Management in Higher Education, as well as many shorter professional and executive courses. Its researchbased Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) programme is ranked number two in the world. In addition, MSM offers tailor-made programmes in a broad range of expertise areas specifically designed to help organisations successfully deal with today’s global market challenges.

MSM offers its programmes in Maastricht and across the world through collaboration with various partner institutions in countries including Albania, Azerbaijan, China, Egypt, Germany, Ghana, Kazakhstan, Peru, Romania, Suriname, Vietnam and Yemen. Around 1,000 students graduate from MSM’s programmes every year, and MSM alumni occupy top positions in business, government and academia. MSM has an extensive portfolio of international capacity development projects, both for the public and private sector and collaborates extensively with international development agencies and donor organisations. MSM offers institutional capacity strengthening through educational and advisory interventions in a variety of fields. www.msm.nl United World College UWC Maastricht wants to become a model for UWCs and international schools in delivering a robust academic and co-curricular programme where learning outside the classroom is as valued and celebrated as that which takes place within the classroom. 67

UWC Maastricht is one of the youngest in the UWC group of schools and colleges and unique within the movement as the only school operating within a national public school funding context, educating students from pre-school age through the International Baccalaureate programme. UW Maastricht recruits residential students of demonstrated promise and potential through the UWC National Committee network to join our international day student community for their final two years of high school. All teachers contribute to the co-curricular and pastoral care programmes through a core commitment to our mission, vision, and values, in which we place the supportive and trusting relationship formed with and between students, at the heart of our enterprise. As a community, UWC believes in the growth mindset: that intelligence, personality and character can be developed and a person’s true potential is unknown (and unknowable) and that teachers and students have much to learn from and with each other. The new UWC was opened by King WillemAlexander who himself has experience with the study-pro68

grammes of UWC. Maastricht is proud to have a United World College to express the international ambitions of the city and to bring together young people from all over the world. www.uwc.nl/maastricht EIPA – European Institute of Public Administration The European Institute of Public Administration (EIPA), located

at the Onze Lieve Vrouweplein in Maastricht, has been offering courses and seminars to European civil servants for over 30 years. It is where people who deal with European affairs can learn in a multi-cultural environment benefiting from a unique combination of practical knowhow and scientific excellence. “We aim to contribute to collaboration and integration between the EU Member States by pro-

viding services that allow public administration staff responsible for EU affairs to further improve their skills,” explains Marga Pröhl, Director-General of EIPA. On the one hand, the Institute focuses on training civil servants on European affairs and public administration; on the other, it carries out practical research to guarantee that the training courses offered are relevant and up to date. EIPA offers a wide range of courses and seminars open to anyone who is interested. Furthermore, EIPA offers custom-designed courses. “Good examples are the courses we offer in preparation of the EU Presidency, or a tailor-made seminar we organised for a Dutch regional authority on European Structural Funds; a combination of intensive coaching and e-Learning”, Marga Pröhl explains. EIPA mainly focuses on the central governments of the EU Member States and on European institutions, particularly the European Commission, although it also counts regional and decentralised authorities among its clients. www.eipa.nl 69
