Raising our standards

Welcome to TEFAF 2016. TEFAF constantly monitors and raises its exacting standards and commitment to quality. There will be 269 exhibitors, including new faces in TEFAF Haute Joaillerie, TEFAF Paper, TEFAF Modern and TEFAF Antiques. To complement TEFAF Modern, the fair will again have a section curated by a guest curator. This year it is the highly regarded Amsterdam-based Mark Kremer. He has made a selection of artists and invited their

representing galleries to showcase their works at TEFAF. Everything is for sale. One of TEFAFâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unique features is the creation of a space where collectors can easily locate objects in their chosen field and at the same time encounter the new and unexpected. With this in mind, some sections of the floor plan have been improved for TEFAF 2016 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; for instance a new design for the Entrance Hall giving dual access to the fair, direct access to the Antiques sections from the main entrance area, a more spacious and visible entrance to TEFAF Paper, incorporating lifts, and new catering areas. The TEFAF Art Symposium on Friday 11 March 2016 will include the annual TEFAF Art Market Report presented by Dr Clare McAndrew. Show Your Wound is the title of the special contemporary art presentation in the TEFAF Modern sector. It is the sequel to 2015’s Night Fishing. The title refers to Joseph Beuys’s work of the same name in an underground passage in Munich, made in 1974. With this work, Beuys touches on themes like death, mortality and empathy. The artists selected for Show Your Wound will each express these themes in their own way. Initiator Hidde van Seggelen: “The inten-

tion is not to redo Beuys’s work, but to portray these themes in a unique way. It’s about making a gesture, for a good feeling, responsibility, and nature.” For the initiative, curator Mark Kremer was asked to select the artists and their work. “He made the main selection, but I was involved in the process; an exhibit like that is really a joint effort.” These works will be for sale at TEFAF as well, but will be on display for the visitors in an exposition-like setting. In many cases, the works are by artists that have never before been represented at TEFAF. The wound mainly has symbolic meaning and is a frequently recurring motive in European art history. Bonnefantenmuseum presents a major solo exhibition of Grayson Perry (1960), one of the most famous artists in Britain today. The eccentric Perry, also known as the “heterosexual transvestite potter”, likes to present himself as a thorn in the side of the mainstream art world. His work uses a huge variety of techniques and materials, and includes tapestries, ceramics, cast iron sculptures, films, dresses and even a complete house. In his work, aesthetic questions of beauty and craftsmanship are played out keenly in relation to social issues. A unique exhibition on the highly acclaimed El Bulli creations from the legendary chef Ferran Adrià, on view for the first time presented in Europe in the city of Maastricht. Olive oil caviar, asparagus beer, Parmesan foam, the soup fragrance spoon: these are only a handful of examples of the revolutionary creations by the world-renowned and widely celebrated Ferran Adrià of 34

the legendary restaurant El Bulli. The exhibition Ferran Adrià: Notes on Creativity is a homage to Adrià’s exploration of creativity and how this quest led to his revolutionary cuisine. It is filled with hundreds of colourful drawings, sketches, Plasticine models, collages, large-scale photos, provocative recipes and menus, unique cutlery and unusual cooking utensils, and includes a film of the nearly two thousand dishes prepared by Adrià and his team in their more than twenty years at El Bulli. The first major exhibition ofAlain Laboile in Europe. Never before were so many of Laboile’s creations on display in a single exhibition. The black-and-white photographs of Laboile fascinate immensely. They are timeless, universal and recognizable. The photographs of his children and an idyllic life outdoors revoke melancholy and longing. Melancholy about hot summers and endless days being outdoors. We see a world we rarely encounter nowadays. Laboile’s children are playing in the river behind the house, in the self-built bamboo forest, with old car tires, with frogs, the many cats and even a fawn. They climb on their father’s sculp-

The first retrospective exhibition of the Dutch artist duo ‘Les Deux Garçons’. Sculptures of taxidermy, bronze pictures, and a mix of technical objects demonstrate the artists’ diversity. The ‘Les Deux Garçons’ atelier is formed by the artists Roel Moonen (born 1966) and Michel Vanderheijden van Tinteren (born 1965), both of whom hail from the Dutch province of Limburg. They met in Maastricht and have been working together since 2000. The duo enjoys international fame with their sculptures of taxidermy, giving stuffed animals an anthropomorphic air. TEFAF is an extraordinary temporary showcase for the artistic legacy of mankind. In general, the majority of art and heritage objects can be considered unique and irreplaceable. Besides financial value, they represent historic, aesthetic and emotional values. Unfortunately, these objects are continuously threatened by natural degradation as a result of extreme climate conditions, high light levels and biological attack. Reasons for damage and sometimes total loss of the original appearance are also neglect and human interventions, especially by insufficiently educated self-made ‘restorers’. “Nowadays, conservator-restorers are educated at university level and are submitted to stringent professional codes of ethics, in order to prevent these errors and to guarantee safe and durable treatment”, René Hoppenbrouwers, director of Stichting Restauratie Atelier Limburg, explains. SRAL is the largest independent fine art conservation studio and research center in The Netherlands and is located next to the Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht. “Our institute often encounters objects that have suffered from I N M A A S T RI C H T A N D S U R RO U N D I N G A R E A S . former restorations executed in an amateurish or unskilled way. Conservation-restoration is an unprotected profession and this is a global problem. Antwerp The fashion capital of Belgium, thanks to the famous Antwerp Six. Because of these fashion designers, including Dries van Noten, all eyes were on the runways of this city in the eighties. Nowadays, Antwerp still invests in fashion. Well-known fashion and designer shops abound in creativity. Nationalestraat is a must-see, with Modepaleis from Dries Noten and Yohji Yamamoto’s shop. In Leopoldstraat and Schuttershofstraat, you will find the big luxury brands: Jimmy Choo, Hermès, Burberry, Paul Smith, Louis Vuitton and Delvaux. Leopoldstraat is also known for its antiques and home decorations. Modern galleries and beautiful exclusive design and furniture shops can be found around Vlaamse- and Waalsekaai in the upcoming Zuid neighbourhood. It is also a very nice neighbourhood to have a drink and a bite to eat.

A city of world class and luxurious grandeur. If you want to go shopping in Düsseldorf, there is actually only one must-see: the stunning Köningsallee, also known as Kö. Art ride through the hills of Limburg

For my annual exhibit in TEFAF, I will be travelling from London to Maastricht at the beginning of March. The route will pass through Dover, Calais, and Brussels. On my way to Limburg, I will be passing countless grey viaducts in Belgium. As I pass by, I often happen to see a lonely cyclist leaning over his carbon bike while charging over the viaduct, his

helmet glistening in spring sunlight. I envy that image. This year will be the second time I’m exhibiting at TEFAF individually; before this, I worked for Ben Janssens for years. It’s great to be surrounded by nature and stay just outside of Maastricht since during the fair, you spend your days inside and then go out until late at night. That’s why I stay with my assistant and guests at a house in the Voerstreek, which just beyond the Belgian border, but only 15 minutes from Maastricht. I often start my day with a short bike ride. At half past seven in the morning, it’s very quiet and the Voerstreek’s hilly landscape is still covered in dew. You can catch the first rays of the sun over Schophemerheide and Kattenroth, little roads running right along the border between the Netherlands and Belgium. One of the night’s last badgers crosses the road making his way to his sett, and Farmer Castermans and his son are working a couple fields over. In Lanaken I cycle along the bakery’s fully stocked windows. It bears quite the contrast to the window of the patisserie on the corner of Piccadilly and St. James’s Street in London, but it all looks just as delicious. These two weeks in Maastricht are all about top-quality art but also the nightly festivities. It’s not just about

the essential fresh air. I get the chance to burn off the lavish meal at Café Sjiek the night before. Last year, we at the TEFAF organisation were very warmly received by the Preveneur Tour, an annual cycling event where professional cyclists and cycling entrepreneurs are generously taken care of by local hotels and restaurants. For those with some extra air, it’s always fun to chat with the Tour guests while the pack climbs the hills surrounding Maastricht. For the first time, this year Paul Seib from TEFAF’s main sponsor AXA is organising a short cycling tour during the fair for a select group of art lovers, led by ex-pro turned photographer Leon van Bon. ONWARDS TO THE FINALE 2016 is set to be an important and exciting year for A2 Maastricht. The aim is to bring the tunnel - with its two layers of two tunnel tubes - into use at the end of this year. That isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t simply a matter of raising four road barriers and letting the cars drive through. The tunnel is part of a large-scale traffic system for which new road connections have been built over the past two years. In order to ensure that Maastricht remains accessible during the far-reaching completion work, we will bring the tunnel into use in two stages.
