Night Fishing and Teyler’s Legacy

TEFAF Maastricht is widely recognised as the world’s leading art and antiques fair. With over 30,000 objects for sale representing the finest of 7,000 years of art

4–

history currently on the market, combined with the knowledge, service and personal attention of 275 international, expert dealers, the Fair is a truly unrivalled experience. Over 170 vetting experts organised into 29 specialist committees examine every single object for sale at the Fair for condition, quality and authenticity allowing potential purchasers to buy with confidence. TEFAF Maastricht draws art professionals and connoisseurs from around the globe to Maastricht in The Netherlands. It attracts major private collectors and renowned international institutions, as well as, regional museums, interior designers, art consultants, dealers and the merely curious. The 28th edition of TEFAF Maastricht runs from 13-22 March 2015. In addition to the wide range on offer of our exhibitors, this edition is marked by spectacular new

design of the entrance hall by Tom Postma and two special exhibitions. Night Fishing, a show of work by postmodern and contemporary artists curated by Sydney Picasso, will debut at the 2015 Fair to complement the TEFAF Modern section. In a specially designed area, nine galleries will each present a single artist exhibition. The concept aims to stimulate the appreciation of the cross-references between objects to be found in different sections of the Fair. With Night Fishing, Sydney Picasso uses the postmodern and contemporary canon to re-examine a subject of current and ongoing redefinition: sculpture. TEFAF Paper hosts Teyler’s Legacy: a special exhibition of twenty-eight remarkable drawings from the renaissance to the 21st century from Teylers Museum in Haarlem, which first opened to the public in 1784 and is the oldest museum in the Netherlands. Highlights from

the exhibition include works by Michelangelo (1475-1564), Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617) and Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606-1669). These 15th, 16th and 17th-century works are contrasted with drawings by contemporary European artists like Guiseppe Penone, Marlene Dumas and Pavel Pepperstein. We are grateful to Jo Cortenraedt, a longtime friend to TEFAF and initiator of both the Chapeau stand and the TEFAF Television News on RTLZ, for carefully putting together this Guide allowing its readers to discover the finest places in the Maastricht outside the Fair. It proves once again that Maastricht is not only one of the oldest but certainly also one of the most elegant and picturesque cities in the Netherlands.

Maastricht’s personality is always extra visible during the world-renowned art fair TEFAF. The entire city and region welcome visitors from all over the globe in a warm bath of hospitality and make them feel at home in our lovely city on the Meuse. Maastricht and TEFAF have been inextricably linked for over 25 years and as far as I am concerned, they may remain so forever - because during the TEFAF period, the city is all about the world’s largest and most exquisite art fair. We are very much invested in

further reinforcing the strong relationship between the art fair and the city. This Official TEFAF Guide plays a key role in that. It allows foreign fair visitors in particular to prepare for their trip to the city well in advance. With an update on the best hotels and restaurants, and the most interesting shops. I would also like to refer you to the lovely programme put together for the DURING TEFAF festival. Enjoy art both in and outside of the walls of MECC Maastricht! Get access to 14 museums/ art locations in Maastricht and the Euregion from 9 - 22 March with the DURING TEFAF PASS. Allow yourself to be surprised with internationally renowned music, theatre and dance companies: true allure entertainment. CityPolo Maastricht, a top event at Vrijthof, is also a must-see during the last weekend of TEFAF. During these weeks, not just Maastricht but the entire Euregion will transform into the world of TEFAF: a good and natural combination. I wish you a lovely visit to the fair and to our city.

Welcome to Limburg

For nearly three decades, TEFAF Maastricht has presented the world of fine arts and antiques in an expert, excellent and elegant setting. The Netherlands’ oldest city, Maastricht, is the home base for the event. It brings together thousands of people from all four corners of the earth that are drawn by their love of art. The province of Limburg and the city of Maastricht certainly identify with TEFAF Maastricht’s core values. Quality of life, hospitality and perception of the highest level are key in this area. During TEFAF Maastricht, you will infinitely experience the connection between culture, trade and hospitality. The art of looking and the enjoyment of aesthetical experiences

are set in the DNA of the city of Maastricht and the province of Limburg. This is where hospitality and solidarity come together. With its Latin and Germanic influences, our culture has grown through the ages. Hospitality is part of our tradition. In the river basin of the Meuse and the Jeker, our cultural history has had a fertile habitat for centuries, bridging cultural gaps and crossing borders. Art is the perfect medium for facilitating connections between people and cultures. It challenges people in the best, most inventive manner. Like music, art is a language that everyone can speak or understand. It is the language of the soul, of feeling connected with time and with society. In Maastricht, we therefore lay down a red carpet for art and art lovers during TEFAF Maastricht, making it worldly human and internationally hospitable.Welcome to Limburg at TEFAF Maastricht.

New entrance for TEFAF

Night Fishing

Designed by Tom Postma Design

New project integrated into TEFAF Modern

The metaphor “Palace of the Arts” was the starting point for the design by TPD. The outside of a palace became the inside of our entrance, consisting of a succession of gestures; First welcoming the visitor, next pointing to the grandeur of the centre and then leading the visitor on to the show floor. The massive walls enveloping this ”palace” are dematerialised in many layers of translucent cloth. This transparent volume creates the canvas for a special interplay of light. The lightdesign

To be launched at TEFAF 2015, Night Fishing is a curated show of work by post modern and contemporary artists designed to complement the TEFAF Modern section. Artists will be chosen on the basis of a body of work that makes an art historical reference to the objects exhibited throughout the fair that between them represent over 7,000 years of art history. TEFAF has invited TEFAF has invited author and collector Sydney Picasso to curate the first edition of this new area. It has been decided that the focus of the first such project will be sculpture. Sculpture is the subject of a current and ongoing redefinition and Sydney Picasso plans to use the postmodern and contemporary canon to re-examine traditional sculpture. Entitled ‘Night Fishing’, it’s a reference both to the ancient technique of fishermen using a

And of course an abundance of flowers, a trademark of TEFAF, will again be a keyelement in creating a warm welcome. In the past 3 years, monumental sculptures formed the heart of the entrance which directed the space around it. This year, TEFAF decided to have the architecture take centre stage.

The concept emphasises the wealth of objects to be found in different sections of the Fair, from archaeology to medieval art and weaponry, which serve to inform visitors’ understanding and view of contemporary production and vice versa. Ten galleries will each be invited to present a single artist exhibition in an specially designed area. Sydney Picasso will curate the way in which the works are exhibited in close collaboration with exhibitors.

Loan exhibition Teyler’s Legacy

This year, the loan exhibition at TEFAF is entitled Teyler’s Legacy. The special exhibition will show a selection of twenty-eight remarkable drawings from the Renaissance to the 21st century and will be held in TEFAF Paper section. Highlights from the exhibition include works by Michelangelo (1475-1564), Rafael (1483-1520), Claude Lorrain (1600-1682) and Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721), Hendrick Golzius (1558-1617); Jan van Goyen (1596-1656); Hendrick Avercamp (1585-1635) and Rembrandt Harmenzoon van Rijn (1606-1669). These fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth-century works will be contrasted with drawings by contemporary European artists like Guiseppe Penone, Carel Visser Marlene Dumas and Pavel Pepperstein. This selection comes from the Teylers Museum in Haarlem, which first opened to the public

in 1784 and is the oldest museum in The Netherlands. Pieter Teyler van der Hulst (17061778), a wealthy cloth merchant and financier, was a true child of the Enlightenment, who believed that knowledge enriches humanity. He had a lively interest in the sciences and arts and built up extensive collections in both fields. In his will, he left his considerable fortune to a foundation to stimulate an interest in the arts and sciences.

Art Symposium The concept of the private collector is also explored at this year’s TEFAF Art Symposium. Private goes Public looks at what moves private and institutional collectors to share their collections with the public and what motivates individuals and companies to start collecting in the first place. ‘For more information, please visit www.tefaf.com.’

Partita 2 stems from a peculiar delight: what happens when two choreographers find each other in dance instead of choreography? In Bach’s violin Partita 2, they wander from Anne de Keersmaecker’s meticulous con- structions to the whimsical, boyish improvisations of Boris Charmatz. In her more than forty pieces, this is the first time Anne de Keersmaeker composes and dances a duet with a man.

Spanish Pablo Esbert Lilienfeld obtained a degree in audiovisual communication, a diploma in contemporary music and studied music as well. EJECT was inspired by the cinematographic concept of framing and re-framing.

Chapeau stand presents: Maastricht Region Every year, the Chapeau stand presents the Maastricht region. This year, there will be an important change: the stand has moved to the TEFAF Paper section, in the foyer, meaning one floor up, at the top of the stairs leading up from the fair. TEFAF Paper is clearly indicated everywhere. Chapeau now has stand no. 706. After ten years, Chapeau has left the west hall, which now houses mainly contemporary art. At the Chapeau Magazine stand, various partners from the Maastricht region will be presented to the international public: The city of Maastricht, the Province of Limburg, Brightlands, DSM, de Bijenkorf, Theater aan het Vrijthof, VVV Maastricht, Connect Limburg, Maastricht University, Limburgse Werkgeversvereniging,TheYear of the Mines (M2015), Stichting Restauratie

Atelier and Chapeau Magazine. The stand will not only be used to display the region where TEFAF Maastricht is held with videos, image impressions and magazines; it also has a current and central theme every year. This year, the theme is ‘TheYear of the Mines’. The Southern Limburg region and surrounding border areas in Belgium and Germany have a long history of coal mining. Fifty years ago in the city of Heerlen, then Minister of Finance Joop den Uyl announced that the coal mines had closed. That had a major impact on the region, which until then had thrived. A difficult time followed, rife with unemployment. But on the ‘foundations’ of the mines, new, very innovative companies have settled which operate worldwide, such as chemical company DSM and Chemelot Campus,

which was recently renamed Brightlands. This fascinating development can be seen at stand no. 706. At the stand, you will also be shown how paintings and artwork are professionally restored. That is done by Stichting Restauratie Atelier Limburg, located in Maastricht. Come to the Chapeau Magazine stand to look through the layers of a work of art, live! At the Maastricht Region stand, there is also a large focus on the During TEFAF Festival. Countless, highly and internationally acclaimed cultural productions will be performed at the theatres of Maastricht and its surrounding areas. Music, theatre, dance and performances - there is a breathtaking range of the arts for lovers of culture. Have a look and choose where

to go yourself! The foyer also houses the TEFAF Paper section, a relatively new section of TEFAF, but with rapidly increasing fame. It includes mostly drawings by big names throughout art history. This year, it will include work by none other than Michelangelo himself. So this year, we highly recommend a trip to the expofoyer. In between, enjoy the tapas bar, which is also located in the expo-foyer.

Museums

During TEFAF, the museums in Maastricht and the region present not only their main collections, but also put together special exhibitions.

Exhibitions Bonnefanten Museum Henri de Fromantiou The very first retrospective of Henri de Fromantiou, a 17th-century still life painter born in Maastricht. Over the years, his name faded into oblivion and his paintings were attributed to great masters such as Willem van Aelst, Jan Davidsz de Heem and Jan van Huysum. Yet as court painter, Henri de Fromantiou depicted many still lifes of flowers and hunting for Friedrich Wilhelm I, Elector of Brandenburg. The Bonnenfanten Museum has brought his masterpieces back into limelight, thus filling a gap in art history. Avenue Ceramique 250 Maastricht www.bonnefanten.nl

Suermondt-Luwdig-Museum Sammlerglück For the first time in more than 50 years, we will have the opportunity to gain an insight into one of the most important bourgeois collections in Germany, formed in the beginning of the 20th century. The collection of the Landrat Fritz Thomée (18621944) in Altena (Westphalia) was reassembled by his grandson. Thus today it is the last privately

owned example of such an art collection from the era of Wilhelm von Bode, the legendary Berlin museum director. The exhibition comprises nearly 100 works, with a focus on the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Together with the catalogue - with contributions from more than 30 internationally renowned scholars - the show offers a wealth of new discoveries. Wilhelmstraße 18 Aachen www.suermondt-ludwig-museum.de

Ludwig Forum Pure With 70 works, Ludwig Forum honours Peter Lacroix, one of Aachen’s most notable artists and a mentor and patron of the younger generation. The retrospective begins in the 1950s and continues along the four decades of his prolific period. Lacroix strived to create pure art as an expression of clear thoughts and a rigorous mind. History of Maastricht d’Artagnan as the ambassador of a city of many towers

Perhaps he did not get the most visible location in Maastricht, but it is a nice one with quite a bit of foliage. In solid bronze he stands at the city wall in the park, forever ready to draw his sword. The musketeer d’Artagnan perished here in 1673, in service of the French Sun King Louis XIV, who conquered the city. He grew into a kind of ambassador to Maastricht’s history. The Meuse’s geographical location has resulted in Maastricht being the stage for defense and conquests for centuries. Maastricht is a fortified city with walls and a fort. Those conquests started as early as 50 B.C. when the Romans drove out the Celts and

84 –

built a bridge over the river. For the record, that is not the old Servaasbrug that connects the two parts of the city - that one is from the thirteenth century. This bridge was named after Saint Servatius, the bishop who came to Maastricht in the fourth century A.D. His basilica and accompanying treasure chamber have attracted pilgrims and visitors for many centuries. You can read the history from the towers while looking out over the city from Mount Saint Peter. The oldest, Romanesque churches are those of the Saint Servatius basilica (allegedly built on the grave of Saint Servatius and four Merovingian churches) of which

Het Beleg van Maastricht Photo Alf Mertens

construction started around the year 1000, just like the basilica of Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Tenhemelopening, popularly referred to as Slevrouwe, to which people come from near and far to light a candle. The red-painted tower of the Sint Janskerk, the Gothic church of the Protestant community – with frescos from the fifteenth century – is a bit more recent, built in the thirteenth century. Throughout the course of history, more and more towers were built in the city. The most striking tower is that of the Bonnefanten Museum, designed by Italian architect Aldo Rossi, built in 1995. Throughout the course of history, Maastricht was often fought over.

The Spanish settled in the city, followed by the French. The forts, the remains of the ranks and the city walls are a symbol of Maastricht’s military strategic function. One can look out over the city from Mount Saint Peter, count the years by means of the towers and go to the city centre to find all kinds of treasures and remains of the rich history of the city. Around 1800, all residents of Maastricht became French citizens, which will have pleased d’Artagnan - though he will probably have turned in his grave, wherever that may be, when the city was taken by the Dutch in 1814.

Maastricht, city of international studies The international nature of Maastricht is displayed in the range of courses offered by its study programmes. From Maastricht University to the United World College, the spectrum is very broad and very cross-border oriented. That is typical for a city which was always internationally oriented, and it is with good reason that the most international art fair in the world is held here. Maastricht University First of all, there is Maastricht University, a relatively young university preparing to celebrate its 40-year anniversary. In quite a short time, Maastricht University has grown into one of the Netherlands’ main universities and has also ranked among top universities internationally; the figures speak for themselves. MU has over 16,000 students, of which nearly half are from abroad, and from no less than 108 different countries. With 17 Bachelor programmes and 50 Master programmes, MU offers a very wide range of courses. Furthermore, ‘project-oriented education’ was implemented here from the beginning, meaning that studying at MU has a strong focus on practice.

86 –

The fact that almost all education at MU is given in English shows how international this university really is. It has had a major influence on the city of Maastricht. The presence of so many young students from so many countries has given it a unique and contemporary dynamic. www.maastrichtuniversity.nl

United World College UWC Maastricht wants to become a model for UWCs and international schools in delivering a robust academic and co-curricular programme where learning outside the classroom is as valued and celebrated as that which takes place within the classroom. UWC Maastricht is one of the youngest in the UWC group of schools and colleges and unique within the movement as the only school operating within a national public school funding context, educating students from pre-school age through the International Baccalaureate

teachers and students have much to learn from and with each other programme. UW Maastricht recruits residential students of demonstrated promise and potential through the UWC National Committee network to join our international day student community for their final two years of high school. All teachers contribute to the co-curricular and pastoral care programmes through a core commitment to our mission, vision, and values, in which we place the supportive and trusting relationship formed with and between students, at the heart of our enterprise. As a community, UWC believes in the growth mindset: that intelligence, personality and character can be developed and a person’s true potential is unknown (and unknowable) and that teachers and students have much to learn from and with each other. The new UWC was opened by King WillemAlexander who himself has experience with the studyprogrammes of UWC. Maastricht is proud to have a United World College to express the international ambitions of the city and to bring together young people from all over the world. www.uwc.nl/maastricht

It is where people who deal with European affairs can learn in a multicultural environment benefiting from a unique combination of practical know-how and scientific excellence. “We aim to contribute to collaboration and integration between the EU Member States by providing services that allow public administration staff responsible for EU affairs to further improve their skills,” explains Marga Pröhl, Director-General of EIPA. On the one hand, the Institute focuses on training civil servants on European affairs and public administration; on the other, it carries out practical research to guarantee that the training courses offered are relevant and up to date.

Marked by many ages and two world wars

Connections have always been important for the Maastricht region. As early as the Celtic era, roads were already built that were used and expanded later on in the Roman era. The well-known Roman road between Boulogne and Cologne, for example, also known as ‘Via Belgica’, connected Cologne to the Atlantic coast and also ran through Maastricht. Two thousand years ago, there was a lively trade between Maastricht, Tongeren, Heerlen and Aachen. Nowadays, there are still remains, including the names of towns and cities, city walls (for example in Tongeren) and Roman villas. But also in later times, people always kept in touch.

92 –

During the Middle Ages, the distances between Maastricht, Aachen and Liège could easily be travelled in one day by horse and carriage. During the nineteenth-century industrialisation, and definitely at the beginning of the twentieth century, travelling by train gained popularity. Nowadays, buying a Euregio ticket will allow you to visit three countries in one day. In these countries, the turbulent history can be seen in many monuments and in the characteristics of the landscape. It is a ride along traces of the past and the present. From Maastricht to Liège and Aachen and back in just one day. The Netherlands was neutral during the Great War – the First World War – that dominated Europe from 1914 to 1918. And yet, when travelling to Liège by train, you will pass a station indirectly connected to the aftermath of this European tragedy. At Eijsden station, the last stop in the Netherlands, a train arrived on 10 November 1918 on which the German Emperor Wilhelm II escaped his accommodations in Spa after it became clear that the war had been lost and an uprising was imminent in Germany. It took forty-eight hours for a telegram to reach the Dutch government and Queen Wilhelmina and to inform

the Emperor that his request for asylum had been granted. The Emperor stayed in the Netherlands until his death in 1941. When the train continues to Liège, it passes Argenteau, which is situated on the outer west side of Pays de Herve, the grasslands that form a natural transition from the Maasvallei to the Ardennes and the Eifel. At various points, the train offers a special view of the Meuse, the river that connects Maastricht to Liège. The mansions along the Meuse remind one of the fact that this part of Belgium – Wallonia – was quite wealthy until the 1960s due to the steel industry. In the nineteenth century,Wallonia was the third industrial and economic power in the world, following Great Britain and the United States. The steel and coal industries grew steadily and the demand for workers was high. In Flanders, on the other hand, people were ‘quietly’ starving. Now, the tables have turned and this part of Belgium is poverty-stricken. Passing castles and slightly dilapidated villages, one cannot escape the atmosphere of faded glory during the trip. After a good forty minutes you will arrive in Liège, the ‘Fiery City’. Liège Guillemins Station is a friendly-looking behemoth of steel, glass and concrete. Santiago Calatrava managed to build a

– 93

station that is both functional and monumental. This is where the high-speed train departs to Paris. The station is perhaps characteristic for the transition Liège has gone through in the past decades: from a ‘dirty industrial town’ to a modern centre with a focus on gastronomy, art and culture. Then on to Aachen. The city is instantly reminiscent of Charlemagne. The train passes straight through the rolling hills of Herve with its meadows, streams and picturesque villages, but there are also tangible reminders of the First and Second World Wars. The viaduct of Moresnet, which is 1200 metres long and spans the valley of the Geul in Moresnet, is very striking. It is definitely one of the most well-known railway bridges of Belgium and Europe and was built for transporting German artillery and troops to the front during the First World War in 1915-1916. The bridge is still an important link for international freight transport: it connects the German city of Aachen with the port of Antwerp and is close to the marshalling yard of Montzen. For Belgium, the bridge of Moresnet is also important for commercial relations with Germany and Eastern-European countries. Every day, between 80

94 –

and 90 freight trains pass through here in both directions. The name Plombières refers to the lead ore that was extracted here from the Middle Ages onwards. These mining activities led to the creation of a large marshalling yard for trains. Plombières, or Blieberg in Dutch, also houses the American military cemetery, which is officially located in the village of Henri-Chapelle. The 7,992 white crosses honour the Americans who died during the Second World War and were laid to rest here. The cemetery was founded in 1944 and, like the Margraten War Cemetery in the Dutch part of Limburg, is a place for silence, respect and reflection. When the train continues to Aachen, it crosses the border without any visible changes in the landscape, although there are still some bunkers from the Second World War hidden in the countryside. The War left deep marks in the landscape. Get off the train at any random station and you might just see a cross with the names of fallen soldiers. There are also still deep craters left in the countryside by bombs. Then, the train will suddenly arrive in Aachen. The city of Charlemagne, Mies van der Rohe and the renowned technical university

Emperor Wilhelm at the train station Eijsden in 1918 Photo Regionaal Historisch Centrum Limburg

is a great combination of old and new. And the people certainly do not walk away from the horrors of both World Wars. There are so-called ‘Mahnmale’ memorials where the casualties of fascism are commemorated. The train ride connects these different places with world history. It shows that there is more that unites the region – especially when it comes to landscape and culture – than what separates us. History,

and the World Wars in particular, have drawn clear borders in many people’s memory. But knowing that this area as a whole is unique because of the diversity of cultural influences, languages and customs, has clearly replaced the old sentiments of the natives. The train ride from Maastricht to Liège and Aachen shows the unity in the regional differences; it does not get more European than this.

Stichting Restauratie Atelier Limburg, or SRAL, has its head office just in walking distance from TEFAF. Its modern conservation studios and research laboratories are located in a historic industrial building known as the Wiebengahal, near the Bonnefanten Museum. Director René Hoppenbrouwers explains more about the scope of the institute: “SRAL is the largest private fine art conservation studio and research centre in the Netherlands. SRAL originally focused

on the preservation of cultural heritage within the Province of Limburg and conservation of art objects held in museums, public collections and churches in this region. However, over the last 27 years, we have expanded beyond local borders to become an internationally well-known conservation institute with departments for the treatment of Old Master Paintings (panel and canvas), Polychrome Sculpture, Modern and Contemporary Art and Painted Decorations in Historic Interiors.”

Palace Huis Ten Bosch in The Hague, the Royal Palace of the Dam Square in Amsterdam, the painted ceilings of Maastricht Town Hall and the interior of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.”

“It is important that private collectors and curators of corporate art collections also have access to our expertise,” Hoppenbrouwers adds. “After all, privately owned art works are also part of our cultural heritage. SRAL is a reliable partner whenever conservation, technical examination or analyses are required. Our laboratories are well equipped with a variety of apparatuses to study art works in depth, for instance in order to answer questions concerning authenticity and condition. Connoisseurs and collectors are very much aware that profound technical investigation of art objects improves the reliability of attributions and therefore value.”

“We like to raise the public’s awareness about the importance of conservation. In the Bonnefanten Museum, SRAL has a studio where projects are carried out before the eyes of the museum public. We train conservation students, in an academic setting, in collaboration with the University of Amsterdam. For Maastricht University, we offer courses and research subjects for students of science and the humanities. Support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and J.P. Getty Foundation enables us to even train young professionals from all over the world.” Hoppenbrouwers continues: “Most of our work takes place behind the scenes, but there is absolutely nothing secret about it. So please, visit us during TEFAF, at the ‘Chapeau / Maastricht Region’ stand (no. 706) or visit www.sral.nl

The institute has a permanent staff of 21 people, in addition to contract workers, post-graduate students, and international interns. Teams of SRAL conservators also work on site in historic buildings around the country. Noteworthy examples include the restoration of the Royal
