Giller prize author at library Vincent Lam helps kick off reading event BY KIM ZARZOUR

kzarzour@yrmg.com

Summertime is the perfect time to kick back with a good book. It’s also a great time to get to know your neighbours. You can do both, starting this weekend, with the launch of Markham’s first One book, One Markham initiative. It’s a community reading and discussion program that encourages all residents to read the same books at the same time — a kind of city-wide book club — with acclaimed author Vincent Lam’s books serving the opening round. Bloodletting and Miraculous Cures, a Giller prize winner, and The Headmaster’s Wager, his latest novel, were chosen for their insights into motivation, emotion and cultural diversity, said Leah See ACTIVITIES, page 2.

Rucchetto, information services librarian with Angus Glen Library. The One Book initiative, which runs until Nov. 14, begins Saturday with a launch celebration at Thornhill Community Centre Library, including a reading and discussion by Dr. Lam. It will be followed by children’s activities (face-painting, crafts and special storytime) and live performances including lion dance and marital arts, classical Indian and Chinese dance and YorkSlam spoken word. Ms Rucchetto said the activities are designed to attract all ages and cultural groups. “We wanted this to be a reading program, absolutely, but it’s a reading program the whole community can be involved in.” That ability to explore and share ideas through books forms the core of a rich city and a rich society, Dr. Lam says. St. Robert Catholic High School’s Stephanie Gaglione is York Region’s top scholar for 2011-12. Graduating from the international baccalaureate diploma program at the Thornhill school, Ms Gaglione achieved a 99.67-percent average in her top six Grade 12 courses. This summer, she will be wrapping up a year-long project on cholesterol levels in humans she has been helping to conduct at the Hospital for Sick Children as part of her international baccalaureate studies. She hopes to fit in her annual canoe trip to Algonquin Park before starting the engineering program at the University of Toronto in the fall. “It’s great working with so many other highly motivated students who deeply care about the quality

of their work,” she said. “The lab components of the (international baccalaureate) program, as well as the outside-of-school components, gave the opportunity to experience things I wouldn’t have tried otherwise.” Ms Gaglione’s academic success is only one aspect of what makes her an excellent student, St. Robert principal Jennifer Sarna said. Her enthusiasm for learning, everpresent smile, positive attitude and willingness to reach out and help others are a winning combination. The recent graduate dedicated herself to her studies and gave up both piano and competitive figure skating, but kept her part-time job as a swim instructor with the City of Vaughan. She was the editor-in-chief of the school newspaper and an award-winning member of the debate team. The busy student also found

time to participate on the school’s track and field, cross-country and ski teams. She was a member of the social justice and environmental clubs and had a hand in the University of Toronto’s mentorship program, where she helped design green roofs. Alexander Mackenzie High School’s Graeme Baker is the region’s second top scholar, earning an average of 99.5 per cent. Despite what some may think, Mr. Baker said he didn’t study everyday, all the time, but when he did, he studied hard and efficiently. All work and no play isn’t very balanced and he found the perfect combination of schoolwork, extracurricular activities and social events. “It definitely feels good to be recognized for my achievements,” he said. “The response I have gotten really validates all the hard

In our ad meeting this past week, this was an item that we discussed at great length with lots of animation. At issue is whether Shepherd's Pie should have vegetables or not. The frozen version, which has been made in our commissary for many years, and shipped far and wide to our wholesale customers, has no vegetables. It is enjoyed by many and is in the top 3 on the popularity list — like the MLB New York Yankees! Now, the version that is made in the store kitchen (Doreen's recipe) does have veggies, and the crew here is loathe to change that, citing its tremendous in-store popularity. So, we've decided to make the two versions, and we have left it up to you to decide which is the winner —perhaps both! Reg: $12.95 %

Teach children to be water smart Recent polling shows despite significant water safety education and awareness programming, there’s still a gap in our behaviour around water. The first long weekend of the summer appeared to prove that point, with seven people believed to have drowned. Although the Canadian Red Cross and others emphasize the need for water safety education and swimming lessons for children, the Canada Day weekend’s victims were all adults, ranging in age from 19 to 79. According to the Canadian Red Cross, each year an average of 400 Canadians drown, more than half during summer. And of the 160 people who drown while boating each year, nearly 90 per cent aren’t properly wearing a lifejacket, according to the Red Cross. Other Red Cross findings include: • Only 46 per cent of children know how to swim; • For 51 per cent of Canadians, “not allowing children under 10 to access the pool area” is their only strategy to prevent injuries related to back yard pools; • While 82 per cent of Canadians believe there’s a legal requirement to wear a lifejacket when boating, only 50 per cent of boat owners always wear their lifejacket;

• Fourteen per cent of Canadians keep lifejackets on the boat, believing they will have time to find and put on a lifejacket while falling out of the boat. Alcohol consumption is another factor that far too often plays a role in adult drownings. You’d think people would know by now that drinking and boating don’t mix. York Region offers lots of access to fresh water. Also, private swimming pools abound. Which is why every family should consider it a responsibility to teach their children not only how to swim, but how to be safe around the water. Meanwhile, anyone who has taken the boater safety exam will tell you that, while there are hundreds of regulations one might be expected to know when operating a motorboat on Ontario’s waterways, the two most important things you can do when operating a boat are to wear your life jacket and avoid alcohol. Save the beer and coolers for when you are safely on shore and expect to stay there. While summer and activities on or near water will always go hand in hand, the recent deaths are a reminder of how failing to be water smart can have tragic consequences.

It’s tough love time for teachers, Premier Dad

I

feel for you, Premier Dad. You spoil them rotten, giving them practically everything they ask for — in my case, that means constantly handing out money to the kids for movies and the mall; driving them all over at all hours of the day and night and/or allowing them to drive the car, full of gas I paid for; buying $90 sweatpants and $200 slouchy boots, fancy phones and laptops; and forking out for countless sports tournament trips and vacations to warm climates. In your case, that means giving teachers a 12-per-cent wage increase over four years in 2008, making Ontario’s teachers the second highest paid in the world, ranging from $41,000-plus to nearly $93,000 for elementary teachers and $94,600 for secondary teachers. Heaven forbid, Premier Dad, that you should ask for something in return when you’re up against the wall and what you get is whining, wailing, rolling eyes and slamming doors. Oh, that’s me. But you’re paying the price, Premier Dad, for making teachers your pets during the last eight years. The economy has tanked, leaving most of us grappling with a higher cost

Debora Kelly of living on the same or decreased salaries. More than 600,000 Ontarians lost jobs, with companies such as RIM and GM still announcing big cuts. The unemployment rate in York Region and its neighbouring communities is an alarming 8.7 per cent. Yes, it’s time for tough love, with teacher contracts expiring in August and a $15-billion deficit to face. And it is love. We admire and respect our teachers, most of whom are caring, committed and passionate about their

profession. By no stretch of imagination could you call their jobs easy. For most of us, this isn’t about bashing teachers; it’s about Ontario’s economic reality. So, Premier Dad, it’s fair you are seeking appreciation in the form of a twoyear wage freeze and changes to the salary grid, pension plans and payouts for banked sick days. These aren’t grievous requests — even the unions admit a wage freeze may be in order — but the unions are “insulted” by the ultimatum. Do it or I’ll take away your cellphone ... er... or I’ll legislate it, you’re telling them, Premier Dad. I’m just saying, this do-it-or-else gambit typically backfired for me, so I now feign parental rationality and no longer tell them to pack their bags if they don’t like it. (Because they will.) We agree, Premier Dad, it’s only fair teachers — and anybody else making a living on the taxpayers’ back — should do their part. The fact is teachers will still have job security and perks out of reach of most Ontarians. Nobody feels sorry for teachers. So hats off to the Catholic teach-

ers union, which brokered a deal last week, after convincing Premier Dalton McGuinty to approve negotiation. The two-year agreement includes a wage freeze, loss of sick days and three unpaid days, equal to a 1.5-per-cent pay cut that will finance the $7,000 “grid” hike new teachers will still get. If all the unions got on board, the province would save $790 million over two years. Admittedly, a drop in the $15-billion-deficit bucket. The high school and French-language teachers unions have decided to meet with the government, while elementary teachers are still just threatening to hold a one-day walkout if the province legislates a deal. While the unions say teachers will be back at school, strike votes will take place this summer or early fall. Premier Dad, we agree, teachers, too, have to help Ontario get back on its fiscal feet, regardless of whose fault it is. But give them a chance to talk about it before you ground them ... er... legislate the terms of the deal. And teachers, get back to the bargaining table, and if you don’t like the result, at least you get to vote against this Dad in the next election.

Garden centre hosts fundraiser

York Region projects focusing on active living, accessibility, vulnerable populations and increasing awareness of disability-related issues have until Aug. 17 to apply for federal funding. The federal government put out an open call for proposals from Canadian non-profit organizations through its Social Development Partnerships Program — Disability Component, Organizations can receive up to $250,000 per year for three years for projects that support the government’s commitments under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The program aims to improve integration in society of people with disabilities.

Mark your calendars, as the “Pink Day” fundraiser for breast cancer hosted by the Woodhill Garden Centre is coming up. Bracelets, baked goods, and much more will be sold. A barbeque and silent auction, in addition to other activities, will also take place. All proceeds go towards the BMO Breast Diagnostic Centre at North York General Hospital. The centre has provided landscaping services to the community since 1976, and will be donating a portion of all plants and gardening sales from “Pink Day” towards the cause. The Toronto Star has donated $300 to show their support. The event will be at 320 Steeles Ave. E, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 22. Call 905-8892917 or visit woodhillgarden.com.

en fences and decks within three metres of the 101 townhouse units at Yonge Street and Royal Orchard Boulevard will be removed, Mr. McCann said. Termites need wood and water to survive and the contractor will drain and regrade the seven-acre property to eliminate the water source. While most tenants are happy to see their outdoor space gutted and refitted, some have a sentimental connection to their extended living space. “That makes me sad. This has been a next room to the house,” longtime tenant Audrey Gibson said of her outdoor patio deck, built by her son and his friend 19 years ago when she moved in. “It’s beautiful in the summertime,” she said. “I just love it out here.” Maya Isaak enjoys her small patch of back yard garden, too, but planted plastic flowers this year in anticipation of the renovations. “I’m happy this is being done,” said Ms Isaak, a tenant of three years. “No complaints.” The latest landscape renovations and termite control measures at the 46-year-old complex conclude a three-phase project dating back to 2007.

Work done in that time includes roof replacement and mould and asbestos abatement. In 2011, Housing York — the region’s non-profit housing corporation — acquired the then financially troubled housing co-op after a court ruling ended more than two years of legal battles to save the co-op from being sold and converted to government-run public housing. The proposed renovations will improve the curb appeal of Thornhill Green, which is located in a wellestablished and relatively affluent neighbourhood, Mr. McCann said. A number of recommendations from York Regional Police have been incorporated in the design to improve security, including type and location of fencing, location of vegetation and improved lighting, Mr. McCann said. Trees cut down will be replaced with new hardwood trees and all retaining walls, curbs, fencing and decks will be removed and replaced with termite-proof material such as concrete patio stones, he added. “How we got termites here in the first place, we don’t know, but it’s a good opportunity to clean up the entire site,” Mr. McCann said. Work at Thornhill Green is scheduled to start in about two weeks and is expected to wrap up toward the end of the year.

Five top blues acts take stage to kick off jazz festival weekend The Markham Jazz Festival’s 15th Anniversary Birthday Blues Bash will feature five blues acts performing separately and together on one stage Aug. 16 to kick off this year’s jazz festival weekend. “I’m very excited to be bringing together so many of Canada’s best artists on one stage and show off the many shades of blues music,” said artistic director Michael Occhipinti. “This kind of concert has never happened in Markham before and it’s unlikely these great acts will all be together again on one stage unless it’s at an awards show.” The show begins at 8 p.m. at the

Flato Markham Theatre, 171 Town Centre Blvd. Performers include:

Shakura S’aida An international artist who has enriched the jazz, blues and classic R&B communities with her soulful voice, personality and commitment to her music. She has recently released, ‘Time’, a double CD that gives her growing audience a taste of her different approaches to blues, soul and rock and roll.

Harrison Kennedy B.B. King has hailed Kennedy as Canada’s premier blues performer.

This talented vocalist and guitarist has a distinctive new album, One Dog Barkin’ Blues, which embodies a personal recognition of the blues he heard in Tennessee and the Delta. Harrison was also a member of the group The Chairmen of the Board who sang the hit, Gimme Me Just a Little More Time.

MonkeyJunk Just six months after the band was formed, they were nominees for a Maple Blues award for best new artist. MonkeyJunk adds the best blues artist at the Canadian Independent Music awards to their list of achievements, as well as the

Juno Award for the blues album of the year in 2012.

Fathead

Treasa Levasseur

An ensemble that has won multiple Juno awards, Fathead brings together respected musicians to create a blend of funk, soul and rockin’ blues. Tickets are $55 from www. markhamjazzfestival.com, by calling the Markham Theatre at 905305-7469 or 1-866-768-8801, or online at markhamtheatre.com

Big voice, big sound, and a big brand-new record. Four bands, three studios, two towns, one album. Funny, ballsy, Levasseur is the type of old-school dame who can get away with wearing a threepiece suit and holding her own with the gents. Now she has completed a third full-length album which represents both a return to her roots and a gutsy move into uncharted territory, and she’s cheerfully titled it Broad. www.treasalevasseur.com

House prices continue to rise in Markham By L.H. Tiffany Hsieh

thsieh@yrmg.com

Housing prices may not drop any time soon, but you could have more choices if you are in the market to buy, according to industry experts. “Prices are not declining,” said Karen Gerrard, a Unionville-based broker manager with Royal LePage. “We are still seeing multiple offers.” A survey released by Royal LePage Tuesday shows year-over-year prices rose for most housing types in Markham and Richmond Hill. In Markham, standard two-storey homes rose 11.7 per cent year-over-year to $575,000 while detached bungalows increased 11.1 per cent to $600,000.

Condominiums appreciated 4.8 per cent to $325,000. Homes in Richmond Hill also made gains, with two-storey home prices growing 9.3 per cent to $655,000, detached bungalows increasing an average of 14.2 per cent to $605,000 and condominiums jumped 13.2 per cent to $300,000. In the last few months, housing inventory has increased in Richmond Hill, especially compared to the same time a year ago, the survey found. Despite a slowdown about two weeks ago, Ms Gerrard said that’s normal during June and heading into the summer break when people tend to be away. She said immigrants continue to play a big role in York Region’s housing boom.

Asked if the real estate bubble is finally going to burst, “We are not in a bubble, we are still cheap compared to New York, London and Hong Kong”, Ms Gerrard said, adding low interest rates are likely to remain into 2014. “I’m not an economist, I’m a realtor, but the global economy is so fragile now, it’d be dangerous to raise it a lot,” she said. Jason Mercer, senior manager of market analysis with the Toronto Real Estate Board, noted that while house prices in York Region are going up by about 10 per cent year-overyear, sales were down in the region by about 7 per cent in June compared to June a year ago. “It’s a tight market,” Mr. Mercer said, but added that affordability is in good shape in the GTA. He said the market is starting to see a bit more supply and is expected to see more choices for buyers in the second half of this year and in 2013. “It’s not necessarily a buyer’s market, but it’s moving from a seller’s market to a more balanced market,” he said.

The province wants to know how you want our child care system improved. The government admits aspects of the system are out of date and, as a first step, has released a discussion paper, Modernizing Child Care. The 16-page paper focuses on funding, consistency of quality of programs, laws and accountability and capacity, outlining the challenges each present and posing questions that need answers from those working in the field and families using the facilities and services. The discussion is long overdue, according to Family Daycare Services CEO Joan

Arreda. The non-profit organization operates many day care centres across York Region and the Greater Toronto Area.

‘NO SIMPLE ANSWER’ “There is no simple or straightforward answer to any of the questions, as it’s a complicated system,” she said. Although the discussion may be lengthy, the end goal is the same for all involved — to create a system that is accessible to all families that need the service. The Day Nurseries Act, which sets out the minimum standards day-care providers must meet, hasn’t been reviewed in three decades, she pointed out, adding this means anyone can open a day care if they meet some very basic standards.

“It begs us to question what the quality of the programs are and the consistency across the province,” she said. With so much emphasis on early learning enhancing a child’s development, evident by the implementation of the full-day kindergarten program, it is important for children in day care to receive educational programing through play.

The five guiding principles in the province’s long-term vision for early learning and child care include support and choice for children and families, commitment to quality programs, efficient funding formula, supportive legislation and regulations and evidence-based decision making and reporting, the paper states.

Fit Body 2xR Training & Boot Camps is challenging Markham to lose 1,000 pounds. While engaging people in a healthy lifestyle, the challenge will also help families in need by having participants bring in nonperishable food items. game and during his second shift when summoned by the parent Tampa Bay Lightning last season, the six-foot, one-inch, 210pound forward revealed in sharing the coveted hardware with family and friends for several hours at the Major Milliken Restaurant Saturday. “I’ve dreamed of playing in the NHL. But winning the Calder Cup is one of the greatest feelings ever,” Angelidis, an undrafted player during his junior years, said. “It’s an unbelievable feeling.” Angelidis played junior hockey with the Thornhill Rattlers in 2001-2002 before joining the major junior A Owen Sound Attack of the OHL, where he played four seasons, scoring 53 goals in 2005-2006, his final year with the Attack before turning pro. As a member on the Calder Cup championship team, Angelidis said they employ the same ritual as teams winning the Stanley Cup where each player gets possession of it for a day. “I was the second guy on the team who got it and from here it goes to Burlington,” he said. Angelidis said there was a time early in the season when thoughts of winning the American Hockey League’s version of the Holy Grail seemed like a dream. But he said a meeting in early February changed their fortunes dramatically. “We hadn’t played well right up until Christmas,” he recalled. “But on Super Bowl Sunday, we had a players-only meeting. “Myself and some of the other veterans

talked to the rest of the guys and after that we went on a winning streak. “Once we figured out how to win, we did it right to the end.” They sure did — 29 straight games en route to sweeping the Toronto Marlies, the AHL affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs, in the league final. As for what was discussed during that clandestine gathering, Angelidis said it was a matter of accountability. “We were at a point where we tried to do roles that weren’t meant to be. Then after our meeting, everybody understood their roles.” Another big factor in the Admirals’ incredible run was their depth. Angelidis said they could roll four solid forward lines. Not to mention their defence was solid and goalkeeping clutch. Adding icing on the cake was in having the good fortune of clinching the Calder Cup in front of family and friends at the Ricoh Coliseum in the series finale. “When I got to lift the Cup, my whole family was there. It was a great experience,” he said. Amassing one goal and five assists during the postseason and 14 goals and 13 assists during the regular season, Angelidis inked a one-year deal with the parent Lightning club for the upcoming season. While Angelidis enjoyed being on a Calder Cup trophy winning team, he would like nothing more than to have an extended stay with the Lightning after playing six games with them last season. “Hopefully this time around I’ll be able to stay up with the big club right from the start.”

Markham’s George earns ticket to London Olympics BY MICHAEL HAYAKAWA

mhayakawa@yrmg.com

As a competitive track and field athlete on the international stage, Phylicia George said there’s just one ultimate goal each competitor sets their sights on — to represent their country at the Olympics. With the Summer Olympics to take place in London, England, later this month, the 24-year-old Markham native fulfilled her mission after taking to the track at the recent Canadian Olympic trials in Calgary. When representing Canada, George won’t just be entered in one event, but two. During the trials, the former Father Michael McGivney Catholic Academy student and University of Connecticut graduate ran in the women’s 100 metres and outraced the field in 11.30 seconds to earn the unofficial title of being the fastest female runner in Canada. Also entered in the highly competitive 100m hurdles against the likes of former Canadian Olympians in Perdita Felicien and Priscilla Lopes-Schliep, George overtook them in that race before finishing second in a personal best time of 12.72 seconds behind Jessica Zelinka. Despite finishing second, George still punched her ticket for the event in London. “It’s really exciting,” George said of her feat in Calgary. “For a track and field athlete the Olympics is the ultimate goal, it’s the one

Phylicia George to race in sprint and hurdles at London Games. meet that everyone strives for, so to make my first Olympic team is a huge accomplishment for me. “The fact that I’m the fastest female sprinter in Canada just helps to build my See OLYMPICS, page 28.

confidence and let’s me know I’m ready to run some fast times.” Citing she felt confident of winning both races at the trials, George was pleased with her performance in the 100m and not the least bit disappointed in finishing second in the 100m hurdles, which she revealed is more of her strong suit. Especially since the field in that event was comprised with the likes of seasoned veterans, such as Felicien and Lopes-Schliep. “I was very happy with my win in the 100 metres,” she said. “Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to win the hurdles, but I was happy to come second and secure my spot on the Olympic team. “I knew it would be much harder to win the hurdles because there is so much depth in Canada with six world class hurdlers,” she said in referring to Felicien, Lopes-Schliep, Zelinka and Nikita Holder, who finished third. George felt she was successful in both races due to her ability to focus on what she had to do and not worry about her rivals. “All the hard work has been done already. I knew I just had to step into my races and be focused on executing my races the way I know I can. I made sure not to focus on my

competitors, but just on my lane and my race,” she said. What also helped George in the 100m hurdles was the fact there was plenty of media hype surrounding Felicien, who was a former world champion, and Lopes-Schliep, bronze medallist for Canada in the 2008 Summer Games. George speculated that might have placed more pressure on them as compared with her, who more or less ran with little fanfare. “I think it was to my advantage. The focus was mainly on them. So I was able to step in the race with no pressure and no expectations. As the underdog I just focused on myself. I just wanted to get on the track and compete hard and show Canada that I’m a contender in the hurdles,” she said. George is optimistic she can make her presence felt on the world stage and reach the podium even though this Olympics will be her first. Part of this stems from her debut in last year’s World Championships, in which she advanced to the final and faced competitors she expects to see in London. “The World Championships and Olympics have the same calibre of athletes and I’m already way faster this year than I was last year,” she said. “My goal is to be on the podium. The fact that this is my first Olympics doesn’t phase me.”

WHY SO MANY DIFFERENT DENOMINATIONS? Anglican, Presbyterian, Lutheran, United, Baptist, Pentecostal, Missionary, and many more. With all the various Christian denominations one could get the idea that churches are divided. However, the distinctions make it more like a symphony orchestra. An orchestra combines a variety of instruments playing different scores of the same music into beautiful harmony. Similarly, just as our churches reflect diversity of ethnic backgrounds and history, temperament, doctrinal emphasis and style of worship, the source of the message is the Word of God. Foundational to all is the uniqueness and divine authority of the Scriptures; the tri-unity of God; the deity, virgin birth, vicarious death and resurrection of Christ Jesus; and, mankind’s need of salvation by grace through faith in the Saviour. Our fingerprints and DNA confirm to us that God has created us all distinctively different, so it only stands to GRACE ANGLICAN CHURCH reason that “one size does not fit all.” Rather than being forced into a particular mould, it’s liberating to be able 19 Parkway Ave., Markham to worship God together with people of kindred minds and spirit.
