his opposition known. Concerns have been raised because of a Metrolinx mandate to push public transit heavily throughout the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area in the next decade as the area dramatically increases in population.

In simple terms, Mashregi said, Metrolinx has bought up about 80 per cent of the GTHA’s rail lines for its transit expansion but does not own the two freight lines, CN, which runs through York Region,

ket. "I spent a few nights ... with two sleeping bags, two tarps wrapped around me," he said, adding his breath frosted around his face. "It’s not easy." He has been homeless in York Region on and off for more than three years. "It is like living one of your worst nightmares every day, until you get housing," he said. But he wants to live a better life and is attending a new program offered by Inn From the Cold in Newmarket. "I have been struggling for a while trying to get a little bit more ahead ... ever since I lost my house," he said. "This seemed something positive and in the right direction." Getting Ahead is an eightweek, 16-session program that began Oct. 17 and is designed to help homeless individuals build the needed resources to improve their lives. "I’m hoping something good can come from it, so we can help other people who are in similar situations," said Melodie Coulton, Doyon’s girlfriend, who was also in the program. "Because when you are struggling and you are homeless, any little bit counts." Doyon has a job, but because of a number of circumstances, including injury and health issues, he struggles to find housing. He started one of the tent cities in Newmarket and has rented places, he said, but there have been difficulties. "A lot of the places that you can afford ... are places in the patch," he said, describing it as the "ghetto of Newmarket." "There are people up drinking all night or smoking crack all night ... it is really hard to keep a job or get any sleep," he said. Coulton, who has been homeless since June, would like to go back to school and find a job where she can help others. Despite their ambitions, homeless people can face a num-

Inn From the Cold program leader, Ashley Martin (centre), assists students Mike Doyon and Melodie Coulton during the new program for homeless people that’s designed to help them build the resources they need for a better life.

New program helps homeless people get ahead ’I have been struggling for a while trying to get a little bit more ahead ... ever since I lost my house.’ LAURA FINNEY lfinney@yrmg.com ber of challenges when trying to get out of their situation. "When you are, say, in a tent, for example, you try and get up first thing in the morning, get ready for work, make it there on time," said Coulton, adding finding transportation, food is difficult. "Every day is a struggle; we are just trying to survive." And a lot of people do not

have addresses or phones, she added. Ann Watson, executive director with Inn From the Cold said they are running the program because it is difficult for their clients to get ahead. "When they come to us, they just feel like they are stuck," added Ashley Martin, the Getting Ahead co-ordinator.

She described the program as "client led," that guides participants through a workbook to identify needed resources to get ahead. "They are the ones leading their journey," she said. This is the first time the program will run in York Region and is funded by a seed grant from the Ontario Trillium Foun-

dation. The first section takes a look at the participants’ lives and uses visual aspects to self-examine their living situations. "I’m projecting there is going to be a lot of raw emotion in the beginning," Martin said. "They know they are homeless, we don’t have to tell them that. When you actually see it on paper, it becomes so much more real for them." Then they look where they would like to be in three months, she said. "The shorter goal, the more attainable it potentially may be," said Martin. "A lot of them can’t even think past one day." She said even running an eight-week program is a big challenge, but Inn From the Cold tries to help remove barriers by providing transportation tickets, breakfast and lunch. The program also helps guide the participants through "the hidden rules of the economic class" and learning about available resources, said Martin. She hopes the participants feel a sense of accomplishment from the program. "I just hope that it is a positive experience for them and they can see that there is a future," she said, adding the program is the easy part. There is also an aftercare piece to ensure participants are still on track. "And let them know you are one of their resources, and you are their support," she said. Looking ahead, Doyon and Coulton want to find housing and use what they learn to give back. "If you can learn something, get further ahead, then maybe one day you can be on the other side of it and be helping people," said Doyon. There will be a second session of the program in January. The Inn From the Cold winter shelter service will be opening Nov. 6 from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. until March. They have a number of upcoming fundraisers to support their services and programs. PM must be ready for post-NAFTA world

The Markham Economist & Sun, published every Thursday, is a division of the Metroland Media Group Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Torstar Corporation. The Metroland family of newspapers is comprised of more than 100 community publications across Ontario.

U.S. president Donald Trump’s ongoing game of chicken with the North American Free Trade Agreement is no doubt wreaking havoc on the blood pressure levels of many business people across Canada. Trump voiced his displeasure with NAFTA during the election campaign, but who could have guessed he would be consistent on the file after taking office? After all, this is the man who promised to release his tax reforms, replace Obamacare with "insurance for everybody," create 25 million jobs, raise the minimum wage, not take vacations, end violent crime in Chicago and create an "artistically beautiful" wall on the Mexican border. Trump’s distaste for NAFTA has not only survived the chaos of a dysfunctional White House, but has also infected talks, as American demands become increasingly untenable. So, it’s likely many are wondering what happens if Trump scuttles the deal that has seen Canada and Mexico become the two largest destinations for U.S. exports since NAFTA was initiated in 1994. The answer is no one is quite sure. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said Ottawa will be ready for any eventuality, but he’s not about to reveal any game plan. Legally, experts suggest we would revert back to preNAFTA Canada-U. S. trade agreements. Failing that, our relations would be subject to World Trade Organization rules. But, would anyone doubt Trump’s willingness to impose duties on anything and everything, in blatant disregard for bilateral deals he had nothing to do with negotiating? Dissolution of NAFTA alone could create seismic tremors for Canadian companies conditioned to having unfettered access to the U.S. Who knows what impact tariffs would have on Canada’s economy? Of course, the U.S. Congress could have something to say about all this. Congress wields constitutional power over international commerce/duties and it’s possible that it may act to preserve access to a enticing Mexican market so charmingly free of labour and environmental standards. But that would mean more conflict with a president who is already irate over his inability to dismantle his predecessor’s health care program. NAFTA’s fate could even land in U.S. Supreme Court. All this upheaval is not necessarily inevitable. A sliver of hope emerged when Trump acknowledged the possibility of a two-way agreement with Canada. Our PM needs to jump on this opportunity, should NAFTA talks stumble. Trudeau may support a renewed NAFTA, but as he is charged with protecting Canada’s interests and not Mexico’s, he needs to be open to an exclusive free-trade agreement between Canada and the U.S.

We need a referendum on pot A couple weeks ago I attended a town hall in at the Cornell Centre in Markham where Jane Philpott and Bill Blair were lobbying for the legalization of pot. One of the many questions asked of the former police chief was why if you say you are pursuing legalization is to keep it out of the hands of minors does your bill allow children from the age of 12 to 18 to possess up to five grams of weed which is enough make five single joints, and allow people 18 and over (high school and beyond) to carry up to 30 grams each. His reply for the 200plus residents in the audience was that it’s just not true. I came home and re-

This pot bill and legalization will be a transformational change to our country and we cant trust the feds alone to make this our law, so I purpose we have a national referendum on legalization, decriminalization, or leave the laws as is. Let the people of Canada decide on such an important issue and not just a select few whose purpose to legalization is very self serving. We also must remember that Trudeau won the last

Treatment of Muzzo sends wrong message Re: ’Another year dead and gone,’ Marco Muzzo moves to minimum security prison, Sept. 29. It is hard to believe that Marco Muzzo is being allowed to enjoy unescorted temporary absence from

prison after 18 months of a 10-year sentence. That’s outrageous. He had killed four innocent people and injured others due to his irresponsibility. I believe the correctional service in Canada needs to have more empathy for the victims. It is sending a wrong message to those who kill while impaired, knowing that they get away with murder. I wonder if being ultra rich has anything to do with this preferential treatment? Alfred Tsang

Don’t forget to fall back this weekend Tick-tock, it’s almost time to turn back your clocks. Daylight saving time ends at 2.a.m Sunday, Nov. 5, so don’t forget to set your clocks back an hour before heading to bed Saturday night. Also, local fire services remind people now is a good time to test all smoke and carbon monoxide alarm units in your home and replace the old batteries to ensure the equipment is working properly. It’s the law to have working smoke alarms on every storey of the home and outside all sleeping areas. It is also required that carbon monoxide alarms be installed outside all sleeping areas so you can hear it when you’re sleeping.

Breading cutlets was one of the first jobs I was given during my brief tenure in the kitchen at our old location on Carlton. In fact I was the guy breading fish, pork, vegetables, you name it. My fingers had a permacrust of egg yolk and bread crumbs. Last week my roommate, whose culinary skills haven’t evolved past using a microwave, was trying to pull out all the stops by making a chicken parmesan dinner for his girlfriend. I told him to dredge the breast in the egg mixture first and then the crumbs but he proceeded to dump both of them into the breadcrumb mix making a sawdust-looking slurry. The dinner was awful, but I guess it’s the thought that counts. If only he’d saved himself the trouble and come here to get our cutlets, he would have earned OFF even more brownie points. Peaches and plums are a distant memory, the excitement of apples has faded, all local produce is just about done, citrus isn’t ready quite yet --- November is not the most exciting month of the year for produce…except for pomegranates. When it comes to pomegranates, the bigger, the better and these are monstrosities.

PICKEREL FILETS

The father of my first girlfriend was always looking to spend some good ol’ fashioned man-to-man bonding time with me which usually consisted of waking up at some unholy hour of the morning to go out on his boat to trawl for some pickerel. There was always an unspoken judgement that I was too squeamish to hook the worm and although I put forth my best efforts, he’d haul all the fish. Despite my lack of proficiency, I loved these times being out on the placid lake at sunrise enjoying the comfortable silence between us, but more than that I enjoyed him fileting his catch, dredging the tender white flesh in pancake batter and frying them to a golden OFF crispiness. This is one of my inventions from my days manning the pizza station, and in my humble opinion, it’s freakin’ fantastic! We start with a layer of our homemade Jack Daniels’ BBQ Sauce, load on a mammoth portion of our pulled pork before covering it in a mixture of mozzarella and spicy pepperjack cheeses with banana peppers and caramelized onions. Available to take-and-bake at home, but I would recommend getting one baked in our oven and enjoying it immediately.

DATE NIGHT

George Costanza once referred to the kitchen as the most sociable room in the house, so just as my aforementioned roommate with his ill-fated chicken cutlet, when I had a lady over this week I tried to win her over by cooking her a pork chop. Not just any pork chop, we got given a sample of a Japanese pork chop (apparently it’s a thing, who knew?) that was just beautifully marbled and I thought I’d serve it with an apple brandy sauce alongside seasonal roast vegetables and squash soup (my specialty). I asked Chef Kulam how I should make the sauce and he rattled off a dozen different ingredients and how I’d have to flambé them, and fearing burning down the house, I asked him to make the sauce for me and I’d just reheat it. The dinner actually turned out EACH amazing, my ladyfriend was quite impressed, especially with Kulam’s sauce, which of course I took full credit for. So this week our sous vide special will be straight out of my playbook, a Grilled Pork Ribeye in Kulam’s Apple Brandy Sauce. Take one of these home from our deli, put it into a pot of boiling water for ten minutes, cut open and serve. OFF Reg. 2.99/100g

CHEESE, PLEASE

I’m a big fan of the Gunn’s Hill Five Brothers cheese. We featured it several weeks ago and it is a remarkably delicious morsel, reminiscent of a salty cheddar. I’ve taken several chunks home and they’ve become a mainstay in my fridge. This week the cheesemakers sent us over a Five Brothers Reserve which really piqued my interest. I asked the producer about it and I think I’ll just cut and paste the text from the e-mail as I can’t say it better myself…” Ripened for an additional 10 months…the “eyes” in the paste are more pronounced and tiny crystals are present, a result of the aging process (this is a sign of a good cheese!). Enjoy its fruity and malty aroma on the nose. This cheese is complex while keeping its smooth and creamy texture, and finishes with a subtle bite. Waves of scotchy, malty and caramel flavors ride over your palate and linger for a long time.” They produce only a few wheels a year so we are extremely lucky to have this in stock. (Left to right) Markham Councillors Burke, Kanapathi, Hamilton, Mayor Scarpitti, Bob, Jeanne, MP Calandra, Councillor Moretti, Regional Councillor Landen and Jones.

Sunday June 29th, 2014 – A Day to Remember!

Bob Stiver in the News On October 1st, 2014, Bob Stiver received a Seniors Hall of Fame ‘Meritorius’ award from the City of Markham presented by the City’s Mayor Frank Scarpitti. He was nominated for the award, and the committee chose him with another senior in second place.

Congratulations, Bob! Knowing how hard our leader has worked for the restoration of the Stiver Bros Mill, now the Stiver Mill Cultural Centre, it is a worthy recognition for his long investment of worry, money and time.

Norma Beecroft, Stiver Mill Farmers’ Market Editor

“A dream that became a reality” – the words of Councillor Carolina Moretti at the opening ceremonies of the restored Stiver Bros. Mill now a cultural centre. “It takes a great vision, great drawings and a great commitment” said Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti. This was an important project not just to Unionville, but for our provincial history and Canada”. Words that were music to the ears of Jeanne Ker-Hornell and Bob Stiver, two of the major players in this story, whose dedication to this restoration of this historic site was remarkable. “It took 16 years of dedicated community activity” said Bob Stiver, for the opening of both the Cultural Centre and the Communities Farmers’ Market”. Thousands of Unionville residents and visitors came to see this landmark accomplishment. Kudos to the City of Markham and the Federal Government for supporting what is now a true and beautiful centre and a quality farmers’ market in a country setting. Now, fast forward to March 3rd, 2017. Bob Stiver met with senior city staffers Mary Creighton and Anthony Ierulli at the Stiver Mill. Stiver was informed of the following: 1. All of the trees located on the south side of the Stiver Mill property, between the Stiver Mill Elevator building and Eureka Street, will be cut down and not replaced (Approximately 65 trees). 2. All of the grass on the Stiver Mill property will be removed and replaced with Eco Friendly cement blocks and pavement. 3. The crushed limestone walkway, that is now located down the middle of the Stiver Mill property will be removed and replaced with pavement. 4. All these detrimental changes will now transform the Stiver Mill’s current park like setting into a barren parking lot. According to Mayor Scarpitti ”the paving of the Stiver Mill property has long been in the works”. Scarpitti claims “the whole vision, and it has gone through a very public process, is that the parking lot will be redone with a combination of permeable paving and asphalt”. The Unionville Vision study published in 2015 does not support Mayor Scarpitti’s claim. During the past several years the Stiver Mill Farmers’ Market has become a huge success in the Unionville community. Thousands of residents and visitors attend each year. Much of the Market’s success has resulted from the Market’s location and its park like setting. Most other Farmers’ Markets are situated on shade less pavement or cement, making the Stiver Mill property unique. The Stiver Mill Farmers’ Market was created in 2009 when this property was nothing more than a mosquito infested wet land and a dumping site for local residents. Many hundreds of volunteer hours and thousands of private dollars later, a park like setting was created. Mayor Scarpitti will remember the following circumstances at the time of the Stiver Mill grand opening in June, 2014. Considerable damage had occurred to the historical Stiver Mill property during the 2013 restoration construction. Mayor Scarpitti instructed his Asset Management Team to repair all property damages before the grand opening in June. However, two weeks before this Stiver Mill grand opening, Bob Stiver was approached by the city’s Asset Management Team and informed that they would not be repairing any property damage that had occurred during the 2013 restoration, according to the city’s Asset Staff, they didn’t have the $10,000 in their budget to fix the damages. Stiver was also informed at this time, that he could not fix the property damages himself, because Asset Management would not give him permission to work on city property. Two weeks of volunteer time and $2,000 dollars later, Stiver and the market volunteers repaired the damaged historical Stiver Mill property, just in time for the city’s grand opening. More than 1,650 persons signed the ‘Save the Stiver Mill Farmers’ Market property petition’ to Mayor Scarpitti. A number that Mayor Scarpitti dismisses as insignificant and irrelevant.

and CP, which runs along the Mississauga-Milton line. What municipal politicians along the Mississauga-Milton line have suggested is that to offer all-day, two-way GO train service in future, all the CP freight train service be moved to the CN line through York Region, doubling the freight service on the York line. It’s what the consultant hired by Mississauga and Milton has called "The Missing Link," and it’s believed it will save $5.3 billion over the long term. What upsets Mashregi and his colleagues is that no consultation with York Region communities was done before the suggestion to move CP rail traffic to York Region was suggested. "They have two alternatives: to build additional tracks along Mississauga-

Milton to handle the additional traffic or to move the freight to York, the cheaper alternative. So they want to do what’s easier and cheaper," said Mashregi. "In doing that (the cheaper alternative) they (Mississauga and Milton) have no regard for the residents who live in the cities of Vaughan and Markham who will be impacted by potentially doubling the freight trains through their areas. It will benefit Mississauga and Milton to detriment of residents in Vaughan and Markham," Mashregi said. Mashregi, with support from other local ratepayer groups, has spoken with municipal politicians like Markham deputy mayor Jack Heath, to encourage resistance to the Mississauga-Milton initiative. In talks with politicians like MPs Francesco Sorbara (Liberal, Vaughan-Woodbridge), Peter Kent (Conser-

vative, Thornhill) and Mary Ng (Liberal, MarkhamThornhill), Mashregi has received assurances he has support for keeping CP freight train traffic out of south York Region. Support has also been received from MPPs like Michael Chan (Liberal, Markham-Unionville), Gila Martow (Progressive Conservative, Thornhill), and perhaps most importantly, Minister of Transport and Vaughan Liberal MPP Steven Del Duca, who has said the government has no plans to move freight train traffic from the Mississauga-Milton line to the York Region line. "The politicians, and this is a bipartisan issue, have been very helpful and very supportive and that’s where we are right now. We want to keep up the pressure and make sure our views are known on this issue," Mashregi said.

Commuters get peek at new TTC subway station JEREMY GRIMALDI jgrimaldi@yrmg.com Hundreds of people, including families, dignitaries and future riders, got a chance to take a look at Vaughan much heralded new TTC subway station and plans for the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre. The event was held on Oct. 28 at the new subway station and allowed those keen to see the new digs a chance to venture into the station that will be open for business on Dec. 17. For anyone hoping to ride the subway, staff on site said travellers will be able to park at Portage Parkway and Jane Street where there will be 700 stalls. TTC riders will eventually be able to walk underground to the subway from the nearby bus terminal. There will be a further 200 parking spots at the corner of Hwy. 7 and Edgeley Bou-

Steve Somerville/Metroland

Commuters got a look at the interior of the new Hwy. 407 TTC transportation hub subway station, at Jane Street and the 407. levard. All parking is temporary, the land set to eventually be redeveloped after the land is sold. The VMC will also house a nine-acre park, some 12,000 residential units by 2031 and will stretch from a new 15-storey KPMG tower to Hwy. 400. The Vaughan station is

the long-awaited, multi-billion-dollar connection between the VMC station at Jane Street and Hwy. 7 and the City of Toronto. Many years in the making and plagued by construction delays and cost overruns, the service is expected to carry at least 100,000 passengers a year to and from the VMC. The 8.6kilometre extension north from Downsview station, with connections at York University and Hwy. 407 among others, is the longest in almost 40 years. The extension will connect with York Region’s VIVA rapid transitway and potential GO Transit services along Hwy. 407. The two other stations include Pioneer Village and Hwy. 407 stations. It’s now expected to take 40 minutes to get from Vaughan to Union Station. - with files from Tim Kelly

COMMUNITY

11

One of the best ways to learn about a community’s past is through its historic buildings. York Region is home to several and among the best preserved are its churches, some of which are more than 170 years old.

1

Holy Trinity Church, Vaughan This Anglican church, at 140 Brooke St. in Thornhill was built in 1830. It has undergone some changes during the last 187 years, including being picked up and moved from its original location on the west side of Yonge Street to its current location on Brooke Street.

2

Holland Landing Christ Church, East Gwillimbury This red brick Anglican church, which sits atop a hill at 110 Peter St. in Holland Landing, opened in 1843. It was built on a half acre of land donated by Chief Justice John Robinson. The single-storey, gothic pointed church was designed by architect John G. Howard.

3

Thornhill Presbyterian Church, Vaughan The Greek Revival-style church, at 7788 Yonge St. in Thornhill, was built in 1846. The father of Dragon’s Den star Michael Wekerle purchased it in 1994 and renamed it St. Michael’s Chapel. It was at the heart of a family feud involving Wekerle’s sisters and their mother, according to media reports.

4

St. Luke’s Roman Catholic Church, Markham The simple, frame-structure church was built by Thornhill carpenter John Edey in 1847 at 15 Church Lane. The congregation moved to a new church and sold the old one to Ukrainian Catholics in 1972, it was renamed. St. Volodymyr’s Ukrainian Catholic Church.

5

St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, King This fieldstone church, also known as Eversley Presbyterian Church, was built in 1848 and served as a place of worship for 110 years. It’s now in use as part of the York Pioneer Historical Society. Sources: Region of York, City of Vaughan, King Township

Save money on energy costs this fall As the colder months approach, you’ll be looking for ways to keep your home warm. This is a great opportunity to look at ways to save on energy costs this fall and winter. Here are some ways to stay warm while improving your energy efficiency: Smart thermostats. Turn your thermostat down when you’re not at home. Another way to better manage your energy use is installing a smart thermostat, which uses sensors and Wi-Fi to “adapt” to your schedule and preferences. Energy-saving renovations. It’s not too late to get those last-minute energy upgrades finished — they can save you money in the long run and improve your home environment. Clean or replace filters. Your furnace’s air filter should be cleaned or replaced every three months. When the filter is clogged or dirty it restricts airflow, causing your furnace to work harder to heat your home. Keep spaces around vents clear. Keep furniture, drapes, rugs and other items away from air vents to allow heat to flow and circulate efficiently. Eliminate drafts. Keep the heat inside your home by sealing cracks and other openings that allow air to escape. Prepare your home for the cold months ahead by caulking and weather-stripping doors and windows. Foam gaskets and childproof sockets can also help close spaces, preventing heat from escaping.

Check out rebate programs and incentives. Enbridge offers several options to get money back when you make energy upgrades within your home. For example, buy a qualifying smart thermostat to get $100 back, or get $1600 back when

you complete certain energy-saving upgrades and a home energy audit. If you qualify for their free Home Winterproofing Program, you could receive new insulation and draft proofing installed by experienced professionals, which can reduce

your energy use by up to 30 per cent. Find more information at enbridgegas.com/ rebates.

Markham resident finds inspiration in Ghana ’Interacting with the children is the best experience I have ever had’ SIMONE JOSEPH sjoseph@yrmg.com After 20 years of sponsoring children, Markham resident Gaby Cardenas finally took the ultimate field trip - to Ghana, Africa. This was her first time going on a volunteer work trip. "I am blown away by the experience. It was life changing," she said. "Being able to provide assistance and see in front of me the needs and the amazing work World Vision is doing brought tears to my eyes several times. I have been touched to my deepest core. Being part of the giving was a privilege and an incentive to do more," said Cardenas, a World Vision child sponsorship ambassador. World Vision is a Christian humanitarian organization that works with communities worldwide. As ambassador, she finds sponsors for chil-

dren, participates in fundraising and speaks on behalf of World Vision. Back in April, she saw an article on the World Vision website about the Ghana trip. "I found a calling," the 55-year-old says. She immigrated to Canada from her birthplace of Lima, Peru, in 1990. Today, she works full-time job in customer service. Before the trip, Cardenas knew she wanted to highlight children’s needs beyond poverty, including social justice issues like genital mutilation and girls’ right to education. She ended up being touched by the warmth of the people she met in Ghana. "The love and kindness of the people of Ghana was beyond my expectations. Everywhere we went we were hosted with love, care and appreciation." Cardenas grew attached to the children she met.

"The children in the communities we visited have great values and principles, they are precious and unselfish," she said. She remembers the time she shared a meal with several schoolchildren from one school. Cardenas was puzzled when many of them did not eat their food and tucked it away. When she asked whether they were hungry, they said they were not. They told her they wanted to take their food home to share with their families. "What a lesson! Many thoughts crossed my mind. Do I think about my loved ones when I share a meal or am given a treat? I could not hold back the tears," she said. "Interacting with the children, their families and communities is the best experience I have ever had," Cardenas said. She grew close to the peo-

ple with whom she shared the experience. "The fellowship among the team was remarkable, we laughed and cried together". Cardenas has been a Markham resident for 25 years. She has two children in their 20s. Since her September Ghana trip, she has been intent on sharing her trip experiences with other people and has been focused on finding sponsors for the children she met. Sponsors provide $39 per month, which helps both the sponsored child and their community. It provides things like education, clean water and health care. The trip has imbued her with a renewed drive to help others. "My life has been touched in a way that I will not be the same again". For more information or to donate, visit www.worldvision.org
