SOME THOUGHTS ON YOUR EXECUTOR One of the most important estate planning decisions you can make is the choosing of the executor who will look after your estate, when you pass away. Essentially, your executor is the person appointed to make sure that your will is properly carried out. For instance, among other things, your executor is responsible for arranging the burial, making any claims on behalf of the estate, paying legitimate debts and taxes of your estate and satisfying the gifts made in your will. You should choose one or more persons well suited to the duties required. In making this choice, you should consider whether it is advantageous to select one executor, or several co-executors, as the case may be.

The following are some points you should consider when contemplating the choice of your executor:

• If you are leaving the entire estate outright to your spouse, you may consider appointing your spouse as the sole executor, if you feel your spouse is capable of administering your estate.

or Swap out your tire for ONLY $29.95 DEPENDABLE,RELIABLE SERVICE GUARANTEED

• One common misconception pertains to the number of executors you are obliged to appoint. If you wish, you do have the right to appoint just one person as your executor. • You should consider whether the person you are appointing as executor has the time to take on the task. An executor may be trustworthy, but he or she may be unwilling to accept the appointment. Executors have the right to decline the appointment at the outset when they find out they have been named.

• If you are considering appointing an executor who lives in a foreign jurisdiction, you should discuss this with the lawyer preparing your will. Make sure you tell your lawyer that your executor lives in a foreign jurisdiction, so that she can address concerns regarding the requirement for your executor to post a bond. For example, the law of Ontario provides that there is no necessity for an executor to post a bond, if that executor lives in a jurisdiction within the British Commonwealth. • Your executor will have to make some management and business decisions. He or she will also have to deal with your grieving family. You should be aware that even though your executor may not have detailed business and management knowledge, he or she can hire professionals such as lawyers and accountants to deal with any complicated issues. • If you do not think that your children will get along with each other after your death, you may decide not to appoint any of your children as executors. Instead, you might wish to choose a neutral person or financial institution. • It is always a good idea to appoint one or more back up executors, in case your first executor has predeceased you, or if he or she is unwilling or unable to act.

• If you are appointing three or more co-executors, such as three of your adult children, you may consider inserting a majority clause in your will to allow two of the three to make a binding decision.

HORSIN’ AROUND Forever Thyme offers loving environment for old horses

STEVE SOMERVILLE ssomerville@yrmg.com Forever Thyme Sanctuary in west Stouffville is a unique farm operation - it’s a retirement home for elderly horses. The facility houses 21 horses - almost all of them in their 20s (senior citizens in horse years), as well as

two donkeys and three minis. Rae Ierullo and her family started the horse sanctuary in 2013. She along with daughters Aeden and Avery oversee the 50-acre property, which is a registered charity. "These horses will live out their lives here in comfort and in a loving environment," she says. "Many of

these horses would end up as pet food otherwise."Aeden and Avery oversee the day-to-day operation of the farm. Staff operate machinery, corral the horses, tame the horses as needed and perform many other duties associated with animal care. Everyone mucks the paddocks and stalls. The facility is roomy and de-

signed for retired working or formerly competitive race or equestrian horses as well as displaced or abandoned horses. The farm is not open to the public, but they do participate in local functions and fundraising events, including Doors Open Whitchurch-Stouffville this past June.

Game criticized as racist by many in the community and abroad ALI RAZA aliraza@yrmg.com Markham-based video game developer Big-OTree Games has decided not to release Dirty Chinese Restaurant, the company announced on Facebook Thursday, Oct. 5. The video game, slammed as being racist, caused an uproar with politicians across the continent, and in some cases across the Pacific. "After careful consideration and taking the time to listen to the public’s opinion, we have decided it’s not in anyone’s best interest to release Dirty Chinese Restau-

rant," the post read. "We would like to make a sincere and formal apology to the Chinese community and wish to assure them that this game was not created with an intentional interest of inflicting harm or malice against Chinese culture." The message, posted on Facebook, also appears on the developer’s website, which appears to be shut down. "Out of respect, we will begin removing all marketing media pertaining to DCR off our Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube accounts. These accounts will also be removed," the message ended. The game developer was criticized by many in the Chinese community and abroad. So much so that even the ConsulateGeneral of the People’s Republic of China in Toronto released a statement.

Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti said, "I am appalled at the depiction of Chinese in the video game ’Dirty Chinese Restaurant.’ The City of Markham stands with our Chinese community in denouncing hate. No business with such discriminatory views belongs in our great community." Initially, Big-O-Tree Games argued that the game doesn’t insist any harm. apology publicly," the statement read, to which the developer has seemingly complied. The game portrayed a Chinese cook hunting for cats and dogs in a back alley to serve customers. Also in the game, an immigration officer would come to deport employees and a tax collector would look for cash hidden under a mattress, the game trailer showed. Chinese-born Michael Chan, Markham-Unionville MPP, said last week, "I strongly condemn the Markham-based company that has created an inexcusably racist video game. I am appalled by its demeaning and offensive depictions of the Chinese community. Racism is not welcome in our country

ABOUT US

No time for red tape on housing Earlier this year, Statistics Canada released data from the 2016 census that indicated a long predicted, but nonetheless startling change had occurred in our country’s demographics. "From 2011 to 2016, Canada registered the largest increase in the proportion of seniors since Confederation. This acceleration of population aging is the result of the first baby boomers reaching the age of 65," StatsCan reported. "For the first time, the share of seniors (16.9 per cent) - the share they represent of the total Canadian population - exceeded the share of children (16.6 per cent). The increase in the proportion of seniors from 2011 to 2016 was the largest observed since 1871 - a clear sign that Canada’s population is aging at a faster pace." In our news feature Senior Tsunami, Metroland Media looked at this change and its implications on housing for the average senior. We defined average as the range from having no additional income from a company pension or RRSPs (surviving solely on CPP and OAS benefits), to having a retirement pension or savings. In short, we focused on housing solutions for the middle-class senior; the one who can’t afford the average monthly cost of $3,526 for an Ontario retirement home (in the GTA, it is more than $4,700), but does not qualify for government-assisted housing. We also used a projection by the province’s ministry of finance that shows the senior population in much of central Ontario will more than double in the next 25 years. The results were frightening. Although we have watched the baby boomers ascend the population triangle year after year, we are ill-prepared to provide housing alternatives to match their income level. Several in-depth reports by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation have forewarned of the impending crisis, but little in the form of solutions have taken shape. The province has been silent. In fact, we believe we are in a too-little, too-late situation for the Ontario government to show leadership on the issue of senior housing. We no longer have the luxury of time to meander the red tape of government. What we need are community-based, grassroots solutions. Ontario could offer surplus land or closed schools for senior housing developments. Municipalities, regional councils and provincial programs must collaborate to eliminate barriers, such as zoning and building bylaws, to pave the way for these alternatives. We need to work together to resolve this crisis. With 45,000 seniors across the country relying on food banks each month, we need to start today.

James Fehr’s letter of Aug. 17, re: Power Reports hit a nerve with me. We are also two seniors living in a 2-1/2year-old house using the latest energy saving appliances and LED lights, and are always getting a report from Alectra Utilities showing us to be the highest user of electricity in 100 similar homes in my neighbourhood. I never run the dishwasher more than twice a week, nor the washer and dryer until after 7 p.m. I never even turn on the outside lights at night. We turn off any lights after leaving a room. However, we do have the furnace fan on

continuously to clean the air and we do shut off our Oreck air filter when we leave the house and overnight and I shut off the computer completely, including the power bar, when not in use. Furthermore, our water is heated by gas and not electricity. What more could I possibly do to save on my electricity than I am not doing already? Linda Garshon, Thornhill

plan, Sept. 13. Mayor Frank Scarpitti is absolutely right when he states that the paving is part of the plan. A little bit of history. The mill was in a decrepit state when the Farmers Market Group formed to raise funds for the stabilization and renovation of the mill. The city had already committed some funds to stabilize the foundation. The city submitted a infrastructure proposal that consisted of two phases. The first phase was the renovation of the mill and boardwalk plus landscaping. Second phase was the extension of the boardwalk to Eureka Street plus the

paving of the remaining area with permeable pavers and asphalt. The city was granted infrastructure funding that allowed the mill to be renovated (Phase 1). The city has since applied for additional infrastructure funding for Phase 2 and again funding has been granted. The neighbours are just waiting for Phase 2 to proceed. The Stiver Mill Farmers Market has been modestly successful, simply by traffic count. The market has struggled to raise funds, so its contribution toward the upgrading is minimal at best. Bob Stiver seems to forget what this proposal is all about. This community is in need of the additional parking as originally proposed. D.A. Worsley, Markham

CODFILLETS CAULIFLOWER FRESH

Perhaps the most versatile fish out there. Excellent roasted, pan seared, but really shines when it’s fried. This is my go-to for tacos. Secret to a great fish taco first and foremost is to batter and fry the fish, forget grilling it, as it gets way too soggy too quick! Then you’re going to top it with sliced avocado, shredded cabbage, cilantro, a splash of lime, and here’s my favourite…thinly sliced matchsticks of apple. May sound odd, but a Granny Smith lends a nice crunch POUND and acidity to the whole dish. Featured at:

Ginormous local cauliflower. And when I say local, I mean local! These are grown by our friends up the street at the 19th Avenue Farmer’s Market. Stunningly fresh and the size of your head, we’ll also have the heirloom varieties as well: purple, EACH orange and green. Featured at:

Sears Canada announced it is going out of business.

Sears Canada announces it’s going out of business ALI RAZA aliraza@yrmg.com Sears Canada is going out of business. The department store was trying since June 22 to find a buyer, but ultimately has been forced to announce a shut down. About 12,000 Sears employees will lose their jobs in the coming 10 to 14 weeks. Three quarters of those 12,000 jobs are part-time and most of the 800 head office jobs in Toronto will be eliminated this week. Sears issued a news release Oct. 10 announcing its decision. It said it will apply to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice for approval to liquidate its remaining stores and assets. "Following exhaustive efforts, no viable transaction for the company to continue as a going concern was received," the news release read. The court will hear the motion on Oct. 13, and liquidation sales will follow at retail locations starting Oct. 19 for one to two weeks. Sears has already closed 59 of its stores. It announced the closure of an additional 11 and all remaining assets will be liquidated on Friday. The closure affects three retail locations in York Region; one in Thornhill (Promenade Mall) and two in Newmarket (Upper Canada Mall and the Sears Home Store at 17700 Yonge St.).

PLEASE L UNCH? DELI? WHAT'S COOKINGATTHE

Firstly, we’ll start off with a relatively new salad, one of Kulam’s creations that I fell head over heels with upon trying it a few months back, our Lemon Orzo Salad. Tossed with fresh cucumber, grape tomatoes, taggiasche olives (those sweet petite black ones in oil, to die for), dill and crumbled feta in a lemon dressing. Reg. $2.99/100g Staying in the same flavour profile, because why not, it works, we’ll have our Greek Chicken Soup. This is in a rich chicken broth with tomato, loaded with white meat, carrot, celery, and rice with lemon and oregano. If you’re feeling a nip under the weather, this will fix you up in a jiffy. Reg. $8.99/900ml Next up, we’ll have a Teriyaki Chicken Stirfry, with onions, peppers, celery, lemongrass, served over noodles. Super easy, tasty, nutritious and delicious. Reg. $9.99/500g Our sous-vide of the week will be a Salmon Fillet in a Lemon Dill Butter. We roast salmon until it’s super moist and cooked to perfection, then vac-pack it with a medallion of our homemade butter. You take it, put it in a pot of boiling water for ten minutes and you get a beautiful piece of salmon that’s poached in delicious, rich butter. If that doesn’t sound good, I don’t know what does! Reg. $5.99/100g Lastly, we’ll have our Caesar Dressing. This is my grandmother’s recipe that goes all the way back to our humble beginnings on Markham Main. Making it was also one of the first jobs I was given when I worked in the kitchen many moons ago. I was constantly amazed by the sheer number of ingredients that went into it to give it just the right flavour profile. Obviously Doreen had it down to a science, as it’s been selling like crazy since day one. Reg. $5.99/250 ml

WHAT'S FOR CHEESE,

In the aftermath of Thanksgiving, your fridges are most likely loaded with turkey or ham, so we thought it best to change it up from our regulars and feature our highly underrated Tuna Salad Sandwich. This isn’t your typical run-of-the-mill tuna salad however, we load this on sliced Ancient Grain Bread with sliced red onion, avocado, bell pepper and head lettuce. Not only is it colourful, it’s also super tasty. Admittedly, I’m not a tuna salad guy, but there’s a super loyal customer, Harley, who comes to the store a few times a week and always asks us for one, which we started doing regularly just for him and it’s been selling well ever since. We're going to feature a pair of specials. The first is a Smoked Havarti. Super creamy, not too salty, just the right smokiness. This will be awesome on a turkey sandwich, but just as at home on a charcuterie board. OFF Reg. $3.99/100g The second I'm really jazzed about. We are featuring the Juliette cheese from Salt Spring Island in British Colombia, a Camembert made from goat`s milk. GUINNESS SAUSAGE

Simply put, this is the best sausage we make at the store...at least in my opinion. We start with coarsely - ground lean pork, some mild spices and use the iconic stout beer as the requisite moisture. There are two ways I like to enjoy these. First, I like to steam them with some sauerkraut and then brown them in a hot pan to give them a crispy finish. And secondly, grilled and then served on a bun schmeared with a sharp mustard and topped with crumbled bacon and extra old cheddar...sheer deliciousness! Reg. $5.99/lb OFF

We’ll also have Wellesley’s Apple Butter (Reg.$4.99/250ml), delicious on a slice of sourdough bread, even better melted over a pan-seared centre-cut pork chop. Lastly, for you healthy snackers out there (I am most definitely excluded from that category), we’ll have Martin’s Apple Chips (Reg.$4.99/ bag). Ernest Hemingway

Another leader of alleged Mafia betting site Platinum Sports Book sentenced JEREMY GRIMALDI jgrimaldi@yrmg.com It was the night of the 2013 Superbowl when more than 2,000 gathered at Markham’s Le Parc Banquet Hall to party and gamble, allegedly illegally. The problem for the attendees was that hundreds of cops from six police forces, including York Regional Police, joined as part of the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit to bust the illegal online gambling website Platinum Sports Book’s party in a spectacular fashion. Found that day were a trove of goods, according to police, including $1.6 million in cash, handguns, ledgers, bank statements and documents that police say belonged to criminal organizations. Some of the raffle prizes included Rolex watches, Jet-skis and Sea-doos, po-

lice said, noting the goods seized at the party were worth about $2.6 million. A financial audit of the seized betting records said between 2009 and 2013 PlatinumSB grossed more than $103 million. It allegedly used toll-free phones lines and website based in Costa Rica. Following the raid, 18 people were charged, a number of them from York Region. Among them was Bill Miller, a former member of Hells Angels. Last week, Miller was sentenced to 15 months behind bars. He is not the first man, who Justice Michael Brown said was in a "leadership role", to be punished as a result of PlatinumSB, according to The Toronto Sun. Gordon Baird, the "technical guru" behind the website police said was linked to the Mafia and

Hells Angels, was given house arrest for 18-months and also paid a $400,000 fine in September 2016. Also sentenced was William Yu, from Thornhill, who was given a suspended sentence, a fine of $50,000 and 12 months probation. Two alleged Hells Angels’ associates of Baird, Andrew Bielli and Rob Barletta, also faced charges, but had different outcomes. Bielli was sentenced to 15 months in jail for committing an offence for a criminal organization while Barletta had his charges withdrawn. George Pandemenos, from Richmond Hill, Abraham Diles, from Stouffville, Vincenzo Russo, from Aurora, all had their book making and gambling charges withdrawn. Bing Gao, from Markham, also had his charges withdrawn.

7 Signs You’re a Good Candidate for Senior Living

COUNTER STOOLS 15% OFF THIS MONTH

Ask yourself these questions to see if premium senior living at Amica is a good fit for you

Don’t worry that you’ll lose your green thumb, though: some residents like to help with light gardening.

Do you like your privacy? Amica residences are condo-like settings where all residents have their own studio, one-bedroom or two-bedroom suites with your own bathroom.

Do you enjoy hobbies and pastimes? Since we handle groceries, meals, housekeeping, linen service, yard work and maintenance, you’ll have more time for socializing, keeping in touch with family, volunteering and more.

Do you value your independence and freedom? This is a big one. At Amica, you live each day your way, just like you would in your own home. You set your schedule, come and go as you please, decide what and when to eat, etc. Professional, caring staff are on call 24/7 if you need a hand.

Do you feel ready to hand over household maintenance? Seniors commonly choose Amica when they don’t want to cook and clean anymore or they’re finding it a challenge.

Do you like having fun things to do? It’s tough to find yourself bored at Amica: seniors enjoy events and outings organized by staff based on what residents in each community like to do. Examples may include happy hours, musical performances, guest lectures, excursions or shopping outings. There’s no pressure to join: all recreation programs are voluntary. Did you know you can try premium senior living to see if you like it? Book a visit at Amica.ca and ask about a trial stay.

Every month you’ll get to select from 112 different entrees, 56 soups and 56 desserts! Our culinary teams also take requests and cook for special diets.

Emily Wright picks a pumpkin at Whittamore’s Farm Shop and Pick-Your-Own in Markham.

Pick your own pumpkin this Halloween It hasn’t been a great growing season in Ontario and some pick-your-own pumpkin patches aren’t operating this year. But there are still several spots in York Region where you can pluck a pumpkin fresh from the field.

1

APPLEWOOD FARM WINERY At this family run farm in Stouffville, 12416 McCowan Rd., you can pick your own pumpkins and apples plus grab a bottle or two of fruit wine and check out the corn maze, take a wagon ride or climb a straw bale mountain.

2

BROOKS FARMS This popular Mount Albert farm, 122 Ashworth Rd., offers pick-your-own pumpkins, and squash plus a Fall Fun Festival and Barnyard Playland.

3

FARINTOSH FARMS At this heritage farm in Gormley, 11858 Warden Ave., you can pick up your pumpkin as well as an assortment of fresh fall vegetables either from the fields or the farm market. Call 905-887-5727 for daily updates before heading to the farm.

4

REESOR’S FARM MARKET This longtime family farm at 10825 Ninth Line in Markham has pick-your-own pumpkins, a corn maze plus fall decorations and loads of fresh produce for sale at the farm market.

5

WHITTAMORE’S FARM SHOP While it doesn’t offer pick-your-own pumpkins, this Markham farm, 8100 Steeles Ave. E., sells loads of fresh, locally grown pumpkins along with offering plenty of fun activities for the kids and farm shops chalk full of fresh produce.

‘Secret sauce’ is bringing together technology firms LISA QUEEN lqueen@yrmg.com York Region’s technology sector is waiting to exhale. The industry has been holding its breath since July, looking forward to an imminent announcement from the federal government. Mulling over more than 50 bids, Ottawa is looking to provide $950 million in seed money to five "supercluster" groups developing bold technologies that will elevate Canada’s profile and supercharge their regional economies. In York Region, the bid is being led by Markhambased regional innovation centre ventureLAB. ventureLAB has pulled together more than 50 public and private organizations, which contributed more than $300 million, to submit their advanced microelectronics bid. Microelectronics is the

design, manufacture and use of microchips in "all kinds of cool devices," ventureLAB chief operating officer Melissa Chee said. "So, for the farmer that’s sitting in Stouffville, it means that his farming equipment gets to be cooler and faster," she said. The future development of driverless vehicles, artificial intelligence, medical devices and more are all microchip-dependent and York Region is a central player in the Canadian sector, Chee said. "We have lots of these big, multinational technology leaders here in York Region, which makes us very unique in terms of the ecosystem across Ontario and across Canada, because we have all of these big players that spend an enormous amount of R and D (research and development) dollars in this region and it percolates across the country," she said.

Susie Kockerscheidt/Metroland

VentureLab chief operating officer, Melissa Chee, and Colleaga board chairperson Dan Gordon are part of a bid to get federal funding to develop an advanced microelectronics supercluster. The government is investing in creating jobs of the future and supporting high growth sectors of the economy. The "secret sauce" is getting traditional competitors to come together to work on this project, Chee

EMPOWERING

said. Winning the bid would help rekindle Canada’s leading place on the tech-

nology world stage, which was diminished following the demise of Canadian multinational telecommunications giant Nortel, Chee said. "If we don’t continue to reinvest and find our way back, we will be reliant and dependent on foreign innovation," she said. "We would rather be dependent on ourselves, and be able to look at ourselves and say we are able to provide that for the world." York Region could join a handful of areas around the globe where technology superclusters boast a thriving technology community whose buzz fuels their economy, said Dan Gordon, board chair of Colleaga - a non-profit organization building innovation communities, as well as a member of the ventureLAB bid. "We’re trying to get there. That’s what the whole point of this (federal) money is. We’re appar-

ently No. 15 in the world and when you’re No. 5 (for example) in the world, you’re seeing tens of billions of dollars more in your economy; in your venture capital; in the number of companies that are formed," he said. "And all the universities are hooked in, and they’re generating more research dollars, and they’re generating the training and education for the people who are coming in and are needed in these industries." Winning the bid would boost the local economy, which employs 60,000 in the technology sector, ventureLAB president Jeremy Laurin said. "When communities are thriving because their industries that employ their citizens are thriving, then you start to feel this spirit that spans everybody. It connects Main Street to the large corporations," he said.

“ Why do I hear but not understand? ” If you struggle to understand, you’re not alone, in fact 47% of Canadians over the age of 60 have hearing loss. Your hearing difficulties could be caused by damaged hearing hair cells inside your inner ear (cochlea). When damage occurs in the high-frequency areas of the cochlea (where consonants are heard), speech may sound garbled and comprehension may become difficult. The right hearing aid could help you improve your comprehension.

Crafting haute couture garments out of bathroom tissue is no easy feat, but 16 of Canada’s next top designers were eager to take on the challenge for the 14th annual White Cashmere Collection. The national student design competition and breast cancer fundraiser, which was held Sept. 28 at the Royal Ontario Museum, is the world’s first and only couture collection featuring garments fabricated primarily of bathroom tissue. The special event brought together the who’s who of Canada’s fashion scene for an inviteonly showcase. Before hitting the runway, 16 beautiful models congregated backstage for hair and makeup. They were then gingerly fitted into the at-time fragile garments, which included intricate ball gowns, sassy cocktail dresses, and other whimsical frocks of all descriptions. "Ladies and gentlemen, I’m sure you’ll all agree the future of Canadian fashion looks bright and strong," said Canadian fashion designer Farley Chatto, who has been with the collection since 2004 as its artistic director. In the end, Chelsea Cox, a second-year fashion student at British Columbia’s Kwantlen Polytechnic University, earned top honours and went home with $4,000. "This was my first design competition, so I started off pretty strong, I guess," said Cox, who crafted a unique coat-style dress adorned with rows of pink and white tissue paper beads. "(This competition) was a lot of fun. I’m a very competitive person so this is an exciting opportunity for me." Adrian Arnieri, a recent Ryerson University grad, came in second and received $2,000, while Charlotte Li of Seneca Col-

Police make arrest in apparent case of serial spewing

Police

have laid charges in an apparent case of serial spewing in Markham. A man in his early 40s

was charged with three counts of mischief to property. He was arrested in Markham Friday at 5:15

p.m. A manager at Frankie Tomatto’s, an Italian allyou-can-eat restaurant on Woodbine Avenue in Markham, had phoned police, most recently Friday morning. The restaurant had reported to police that over the past year, employees’ cars were covered with an

oily liquid at lunch time between noon and 2 p.m. in the back parking lot. A customer had also complained of similar treatment to his car. In fact, police were told of 30 incidents of this happening in the same parking lot behind the restaurant over the past four years.

It appears that the man had been eating and drinking at the restaurant then purposely vomiting on vehicles, said Sgt. Scott Hunter of York Regional Police. Police have not released the man’s name but say he is from Oshawa and is employed in the area of the restaurant.

26 SENIORS

TSUNAMI

A

n unstoppable flood is headed our way. Ontario’s senior population is rising as baby boomers turn 65. Within 25 years, the number of seniors is projected to double to 4.6 million. At that time, one in every four people in this province will be a senior. While this massive wave of seniors has long been predicted, we are still ill prepared to provide housing to meet their needs. Muskoka resident Shelley Raymond encountered this problem 10 years ago while exploring options for her parents. "I found pretty much nothing outside of a retirement home, or long-term care, which are all booked to the nines. And hugely expensive," she said. The average monthly cost in an Ontario retirement home is $3,526, but you can pay more than $6,000 depending on where you live, states a 2017 seniors’ housing report by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. As your health declines, you’ll fork over more money for added care. "Retirement homes, in most cases, are profit-based and when you run out of money they will kick you out," Raymond said. "It’s already happening over and over again." Raymond was determined to find an alternative. Due to declining health, her mom moved into long-term care. Her dad couldn’t afford to stay in the family home, but refused to give up his independence. And Raymond worried he would outlive his money in a retirement home. Because Raymond’s grandfather died at an early age, his son chose living life to the fullest over saving for retirement. The responsibility to find an answer for her dad fell at Raymond’s feet because her two siblings lived far away. Raymond was crying about her plight to a friend in a Muskoka restaurant when a solution was born. The pair was talking about shared home ownership. The idea came to Raymond after she looked worldwide for an option that could give her dad independence, affordability, and social interaction. "A man sitting in the restaurant overheard me and he walked over and said ‘You can use my house because I have the same problem,’" Raymond said. Solterra Co-housing Ltd.

RETIREMENT INCOME CALCULATOR The Government of Canada has created a retirement income calculator to help you determine how Old Age Security pension and Canada Pension Plan will contribute to your future financial security. You can find the calculator online at tinyurl.com/ seniorstsunami.

Sara Carson/Metroland

Muskoka resident Shelley Raymond fought to create this shared ownership home in Bracebridge for her dad and other seniors. She owns a company called Solterra Co-housing and plans to open more shared ownership homes to meet the needs of a growing number of seniors.

Seniors housing crisis looms Municipalities and community residents shouldn’t wait for the province to take a lead. Solutions will be found in grassroots initiatives: urban planner SARA CARSON scarson@simcoe.com was born. Raymond has a background in real estate, her husband is a talented carpenter, and her dad was a top planner in Canada. They renovated the Bracebridge home and four seniors moved in, splitting ownership between them. But it wasn’t over. The plan sparked an uphill battle with the municipality, planners, lawyers and retirement homes. "I was pretty sure when I

Metroland Reports

announced what we were doing I could do it legally, all I had to do was convince others. That was problematic," Raymond said. She won the legal challenges at a huge cost, but her goal was never just one house. "I knew we could do it across Canada. If I was having those problems 10 years ago, I knew the numbers would increase substantially as we moved

forward," Raymond said. Demand for shared home ownership is picking up substantially. Raymond helped create co-housing projects in Brechin, Port Perry, and Guelph. Solterra Co-housing Ltd. just put an offer on a house in Barrie. Shared home ownership is one solution. We need a variety of housing options and models to ensure baby boomers can

fund their own retirement. This will require innovation, planning, and bylaw and zoning changes. In this series, Metroland examines four options: cohousing with a stranger, cohousing with family, retiring up north in Elliot Lake and renovating your home to add accessible features with help from government grants. The Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) released a policy discussion paper in 2016 to recognize that the municipal sector is at the forefront of developing age-friendly communities, including affordable housing. Michael Jacek, a senior policy adviser, said AMO hasn’t come up with specific recommendations like shared home ownership, or co-housing. And they haven’t discussed bylaw and policy changes that may be required. "We’ve been operating more at a high-level to encourage people to do the age-friendly community planning. Creative solutions like that may be the result of some of these community plans," Jacek said. Urban planner John Lewis, an associate professor with the University of Waterloo’s school of planning, said there are municipalities, developers, and community groups facing the wave head on. He helped develop the province’s age-friendly planning guide. Lewis said top developers are leading the way with innovative housing solutions. "Once they have proven the market potential for that kind of housing stock, then generally the rest of the developers will follow suit," he said. Lewis said municipalities and community residents shouldn’t wait for the province to take a lead. Solutions will be found in grassroots initiatives, like Solterra Co-housing Ltd. "The feet on the ground literally consists of people who are residents of the communities driving these initiatives forward," Lewis said. l See page 35 for four housing solutions

Declutter your closet with these minimalist tips Each year, we declutter our lives through a crusade called spring cleaning. It marks the transition from wearing our winter garb to our summer digs, but no such milestone is allotted to the seasonal transition during fall. This time of year is an equally important opportunity for simplification, especially when it comes to cleaning out your closet and creating the perfect capsule wardrobe. In theory, capsule wardrobes are a minimalist selection of items that can be easily mixed and matched, creating a multitude of combinations. Saving you time and money, this is a strategy designed to streamline your daily clothing choices. In practice, capsule wardrobes are more easily said than done. If downsizing to 30 items sounds impossible, there are other methods for making more closet space: t 4FU BTJEF SFHVMBS UJNFT PG UIF ZFBS UP SFBTTFTT ZPVS DMPTFU 4QSJOH

Everyday, technology is getting better at saving homeowners time, energy and money. In recent years, appliances of all brands have set their sights on pushing the limits of development and innovation. What used only to exist in futuristic films can now be found in your local Home Depot. Here are a few recent insights into what’s new in appliances. Flexibility. Imagine owning a washer that can run two separate loads at once, or a dryer that lets you dry delicates and everyday garments at the same time. Newly developed technology brings this dream to life, and even include Wi-Fi connectivity so that you can receive alerts, start, stop and monitor cycles remotely.

| Markham Economist & Sun | Thursday, October 12, 2017

What’s trending in smart home technology?

33

Saving time. Some appliances have smart home capabilities so busy professionals can monitor their kitchens via their phone or laptops. This means you can now purchase high-tech ovens, dishwashers and fridges that are equipped with cameras, allowing you to check on your roast from the bedroom or draft a shopping list from the supermarket. Saving money. Have you ever been hungry and indecisive, letting all the cool air out while you ponder in front of an open refrigerator door? LG brings state-of-the-art technology to their new door-in-door fridge design, which provides easy access to drinks and snacks without opening the full fridge door. It’s almost like magic — simply knock twice on the glass to illuminate the contents within.

Simplified design. As the heart of the home, the kitchen fills an increasing number of functions including cooking, socializing and dining. Designers are finding new ways to embed intelligent technology into countertop surfaces that help

keep the space clean and uncluttered. Homeowners now have the option to integrate wireless charging hotspots directly into hard surfaces like Corian countertops, which allows for embedded tech. So, when you get home after a long day at

work, simply place your smartphone on the designated counter area and juice up that battery while you get dinner started.

Four alternative housing options for Ontario seniors Metroland Media explored four housing options for seniors: co-housing with a stranger, co-housing with family, retiring in Elliot Lake and renovating to add accessible features with help from government grants.

Six years ago, Penstone’s daughter, Corrine, asked if she and her partner, Steven Gagnon, could move in to save money for a home. They also revealed they were expecting twins. The boys grew up in their grandparents’ house before the family moved to their own home. While there are challenges to having a multigenerational household, Penstone said the benefits have far outweighed the adjustments for his family. 1. GO NORTH When Barrie’s Annamarie Sugar and her husband, Don Ough, began searching for a place to enjoy retirement, they wanted a small, quiet community with affordable housing costs. The hunt took them to Elliot Lake between Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie "Barrie was a nice small town when we moved there," Sugar said. "Now, it’s just too big, too noisy, too many people." Sugar and her husband aren’t alone in choosing the community, thanks to a marketing campaign aimed at attracting retirees. Read more at tinyurl.com/seniorstsunaminorth. 2. Discussions around housing and how it relates to seniors tended to focus on how a number of their aging residents wished to stay in their homes but were finding it difficult to maintain them without help. In their 40s, the couple is working with Ronny Wiskin, a specialist in home renovation for accessibility, through the Toronto-based Med+ Home Healthcare company. The company assists homeowners to modify environments using universal design principles - a seven-point checklist that balances esthetics and comfort with accessibility for people who might be confined to a wheelchair, or have other mobility issues. Friends may call at the Roadhouse & Rose Funeral Home, 157 Main St. S, Newmarket on Thursday, October 12th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service in the chapel on Friday, October 13th at 11 a.m. followed by reception and then interment at Stouffville Cemetery. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Ontario Lung Association.

Kathy was a devoted aunt, always willing to deal with a cold arena for a hockey game, stand in the rain to watch rugby and endure long high school musical events, not without a clever quip or two. Kathy was a spectacular person with high intellect and great curiosity. She was a voracious reader and had been known to read up to six books at a time, mostly mysteries and anything to do with world politics. Kathy had spent many years working with people with disabilities and although she went on to become a master gardener her close ties to her first vocation remained. As a master gardener, Kathy had the unique ability to quickly connect with her clients and co-create a beautiful garden for them. The gardens she created and maintained are her legacy, she made the world a more beautiful place. A celebration of her life will occur at Willow Springs Winery, 5572 Bethesda Road, Stouffville on Thursday, October 26, 2017 from 4-7 p.m. Condolences may be left at www.dixongarland.com. In recognizing her love of everything green and her support of those with disabilities, in lieu of flowers donations to New Leaf Living and Learning Together will be appreciated. www.newleaf.ca

Kathy will be remembered for her dry sense of humour, storytelling and her love for everything green that she saw as being unique and different. She was devoted to and loved her Siamese Cat Chesney and was known at home to be “the outside mommy”, always the one to watch Chesney as he explored nature. She loved Orr’s Island, Maine and her close and loving friendships with Stan, Ginny and their family. After her home she considered this to be her second most favourite place.
