Just ask Kate Beliba and Haruka Yuen.

The two York Region youth remember loneliness, fear and tears when they immigrated to Canada.

“It was really bad,” recalls Miss Yuen. “The first year I had no one

helping me, no friends. I cried every day.

“Because I had limited English skills, could only say simple words, other students would say ‘she doesn’t know English; better not

talk to her’. So I just read books, did homework, stayed in the library by myself.”

A 54-year-old Markham woman has been reported as the region’s first probable human case of West Nile virus this year.

The woman has flu-like symptoms and is recovering at home, near Yonge and John streets in Thornhill, Joe La Marca, York’s director of health protection said Wednesday.

Mr. La Marca said while they were notified of her first preliminary test results Aug. 11, officials are still trying to determine when and where she may have contracted the virus, which is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito.

TRAP IN YARD A roaming mosquito trap has been put in her backyard and officials are looking for standing water in a 2-kilometre radius of her house, Mr. La Marca said.

There are 37 regular mosquito traps placed throughout the region.

So far this year, 20 mosquito pools have tested positive for West Nile virus, including in Newmarket, Vaughan, East Gwillimbury, King, Richmond Hill and Markham.

York has not experienced rates of positive mosquito pools this high since 2006.

An investigation into the alleged acceptance of inappropriate donations by MP Paul Calandra will not take place, the federal ethics commissioner’s office said this week.

We hate to rain on your back yard party, but fresh-air cooking can be anything but wholesome.

Whether it’s the carcinogens from charred meat, the fumes you inhale with chemical-laden charcoal lighter fluid or the truckloads of plastic cups and cutlery piling up in the landfill, lighting up the bar-bee can be toxic for you and the planet.

But it doesn’t have to be.

With a few simple changes to how you grill, you can still enjoy goodies outdoors and do good for the outdoors (and your family’s health) at the same time.

Step one: Choose the greenest cooking method.

Connie Wong, air quality coordinator with the Lung Association, says it’s especially important we cook conscientiously on hot days such as we’ve had this summer, when air quality impacts those with breathing difficulties. She recommends using natural gas or propane; it produces less air pollution compared to charcoal grills.

Instant-light charcoal and lighter fluid can also add toxins to your food. A good alternative is the chimney starter, Ms Wong says.

BIC has a new product, called FlameDisk, that is an alternative to charcoal. It uses ethanol — a renewable resource — as the main fuel ingredient, is recyclable in communities where aluminum products may be recycled and claims to burn cleaner with low volatile organic compound emissions. It can be found at Walmart, Home Hardware, Sobey’s and Mac’s for $5 to $7.

If charcoal is your thing, Marwan Dib, executive chef at Newmarket’s Nature’s Emporium, recommends either pure lump wood charcoal or charcoal made with coconut husks.

Produced from the Cocos-Nucifera tree, which is plentiful in Indonesia, the latter is available at Ontario Gas BBQ in Concord. Owner Duff Dixon says his store also sells Maple Leaf charcoal, which is made from government-sanctioned forestry cutting.

ing it for $495 US. Solar-powered cooking is another option for your outdoor cookout.

If you like the idea of the slow food movement, this method fits well since it takes hours to cook, but leaves a light eco-footprint.

Shoresh Jewish Environmental Programs in Thornhill has built a solar oven from reclaimed material — plywood, old windows and sleeping bags — and children build pizza-box ovens that get warm enough to melt cheese on a bagel, says director Risa Alyson Cooper.

But if you’re sticking with the standard gas grill, environmentalists suggest you purchase one that will last, rather than a cheap, disposable unit, and take care of it.

Cheryl Rak, with the Meat Merchant in Stouffville, suggests cleaning with a wire brush, vinegar and water and protecting your grill from the elements with a cover.

Community grills are another green option.

“For the amount of grilling we do, does it make sense that every house on the block has one?” Ms Cooper says. If you’re already firing up the grill, she suggests calling the neighbors; it’s a chance to share the heat and maybe some back yard conversation.

Step two: Choose earth-friendly fare.

“It’s not just how you grill,” Ms Cooper says, “but also what you grill.”

To keep your eco-footprint small, Fiona Wood, with York Region Environmental Alliance, recommends vegetarian fare, using local, organic fruits and vegetables from farmers markets, community supported agricultural programs, or purchasing grocery food with Ontariogrown stickers.

In an ideal world, you’d grow your own organically, but that’s not always possible. Joan Stonehocker, executive director of York Region Food Network, can’t grow veggies in her shady back yard, so she and

For those who prefer meat, Ms Rak suggests buying from a local butcher carrying meat sourced locally and ideally is grain-fed or organic. To keep grilling fumes to a minimum, choose meat that cooks quickly — hotdogs, sausages and sliders — she says.

For best results, make sure your meat is at room temperature. After marinating in the fridge, allow meat to sit out on the counter 25 minutes; this will allow for even cooking and quicker time on the grill, she says.

Barbecuing veggies at the same time as your meat also reduces grill time. Potatoes and corn can be microwaved to quickly “pre-cook” and then finished up on the grill.

Another way to minimize cooking time is to focus on fresh, Mr. Dib suggests. Try making salsa to top up quick-cooking fish, for example. A rack of lamb, cut into chops, (marinaded with rosemary, lemon, olive oil and garlic) is another favorite fast-cooking meal, as are kabobs (try pineapple with pork in an olive oil,

garlic, lemon/vinegar marinade).

Mr. Dib also likes to cook platefree as they do in Thailand, wrapping food in banana leaves to hold the meal together and keep it moist.

He also marinades his meat with antioxidant herbs, such as rosemary, to reduce the amount of chemical build-up on food.

Step three: hosting an ecofriendly cookout Danielle Cawthorne, of Newmarket, keeps a big plastic bin filled with cutlery, plastic plates, bowls and cups collected from secondhand and dollar stores, ready for outdoor get-togethers.

Time for corner store liquor sales Booze is business. Big business in Ontario.

The LCBO added $1.6 billion to Ontario’s coffers last year, so it’s no wonder the Liberal government has approved a 70-outlet expansion, costing $100 million, over the next two years.

The Progressive Conservatives are, instead, calling on the Liberals to share the love and allow convenience stores to sell beer and wine.

It’s a move to which most consumers would say cheers — more than 112,000 signed an Ontario Convenience Stores Association petition favouring the idea and a new Angus Reid poll indicates two of three Ontarians favour buying beer and wine at the corner store.

Yet, despite the apparent support of consumers for change to the liquor laws that date back to the 1930s, Premier Dalton McGuinty was quick to put a cork in the idea, insisting the LCBO is doing a good job preventing minors from buying alcohol.

Are our kids are going to become drooling, staggering alcoholics without the benevolent intervention of the LCBO and Premier Dad? The reality is a majority of our

teenaged minors are drinking alcohol. The convenience stores association insists individual owners do a better job of turning away ineligible buyers of age-restricted products than do the LCBO or The Beer Store and has studies to back it up.

The Ontarians who want the convenience of having beer and wine available at the local store will also want to see it sold responsibly, under the same stringent — or even stricter — rules followed by the LCBO, including proof of age for all purchases, It’s working in the 214 Ontario stores already selling alcohol in communities too small for a regular LCBO outlet or Beer Store.

Bottom line, selling alcohol is a business and it’s wrong for the Liberals to be coy about its true motivation to maintain — and expand — the status quo.

Only 5 per cent of those polled in the Angus Reid survey were aware the Beer Store is not publicly owned like the LCBO, but operated by foreign multinational alcohol distributors.

In today’s economy, why shouldn’t some of the profits of beer sales remain in our province?

World without cars? Just bicycles, people on foot and maybe a better use of boats along the shoreline to get around?

It’s this kind of utopian ideal that many envision for pockets of downtown Toronto, or main streets in the towns that surround the big city (minus the boats, of course, although the way it’s been raining as I write this, you never know).

You’d like to get an idea of how this would work but examples — short of going to a continent where the car is not ubiquitous thanks to basic poverty — are few and far between.

I was lucky enough to go to a place where cars aren’t king over my summer vacation. It was fun for this tourist and fascinating from the perspective of the car-less society.

Mackinac Island, which is in Lake Huron, has lived apparently quite

The only acceptable modes of transportation other than good old shoe power are bicycles — of which there are hundreds for rent — and horses, whose calling cards add a certain odiferous quality to the air in the town core. (You do get used to it. Just think of it as “horse exhaust”, which can clear your sinuses.)

The horses, which are raised on the island, are pretty hard working, pulling everything from carriages filled with people to UPS courier wagons to big wagons collecting the garbage along the main streets,

which are lined with fudge shops, restaurants and retail stores.

The day we were there, after arriving by passenger ferry from St. Ignace, the temperatures were definitely on the warm side, so the horses were getting plenty of water and moving at a pretty slow pace.

The real way to get around, though, was by bicycle. We rented bikes for just $6 an hour. Mine was a Trek, one of the most comfortable two-wheelers I’ve ever ridden.

It was an upright thing with padded seat that the rental guy picked out, no doubt using a mental checklist. (Old guy? Check. Doesn’t ride bikes much? Check. Back problems every six months? Check.)

It took us an hour-and-a-half to ride around the paved road on the perimeter of the island, which includes a state park, and my legs, back and behind hardly felt a thing.

The funny thing was that it took me a while to relax and realize that no, a car was not coming up behind me on my left. No need to keep looking over my shoulder. No need to keep listening for that infernal combustion engine that never came.

I can enjoy the scenery: trees, peb-

ble beaches, clear water, fresh, horsefree air and beautiful old homes.

Meanwhile, there was much civility among us cyclists, who made way for each other and passed with care.

Maybe it’s because we were tourists.

But maybe it was because the bicycle is more human in scale and, without cars around, everyone was relaxed and not in fear for their lives.

Could this type of thing be replicated here in York Region?

I know it’s unlikely. The advantage of the island is that it’s cut off from the world of cars by a sizable body of water, meaning an automobile ban can be enforced.

But there is a beauty to the whole place that seems worth trying to replicate, even in an urban setting.

To me, it’s not bike lanes beside roadways but rather bicycle paths through parks and forests, completely separated from cars, that are our best hope — something our towns and cities are working on now, at great cost and with sometimes mixed results.

Although perhaps, after 100 years of automobiles, the horse is already out of the barn, so to speak, and only digging a moat around an entire town could keep the cars away.

Argentina native changes tune on jazz

While other children played with toys, Cecilia Monte played with musical instruments.

Her mother, also a music teacher, taught

her much about music, including how to play the flute, percussion and guitar.

“We had more instruments than toys,” said Ms Monte, who was born in Argentina.

Jazz music was a fixture in her house growing up. Her father was a jazz drummer

and her brother played piano jazz. But she didn’t like jazz as a child. She remembers telling her father she was tired of it.

Clearly, the 27 year old has changed her mind.

This weekend, she performs at The Markham Jazz Festival.

It follows a performance at the Vancouver Jazz Festival, where she earned a standing ovation after a crowded Canada Day performance. She estimates there were 500 people.

“It was unbelievable. Really great ... They loved it and were responding to every song.

The feedback was amazing. It was an interactive audience. They wouldn’t let me go,” she said. The audience kept asking for encores.

Ms Monte has released her first full-length album — Open Air. Open Air was recorded in Argentina and features 10 tracks in three languages: Portuguese, Spanish and English; five original songs written by Ms Monte, and five renowned jazz standards (such as Old Devil Moon, My Favorite Things and I Hear Music), in which Cecilia adds a personal touch with her own arrangements.

She found the inspiration to write music and lyrics while travelling in Canada, meeting new people and discovering a new culture. She wrote while walking outside in summer by the shore and in parks.

“I am excited to share my music with Canadian audiences,” she said.

She first came to Canada in October 2009 because she wanted to study and improve her understanding of jazz music and how to

Dancer seeks votes to join Raptors Pak A Markham resident is moving from centre stage to stomping on the hardwood.

Last month, Jamie Hoffeldt, 23, outdanced some 200 other girls vying for the last spot on the Raptors Dance Pak. And now it’s up to you to vote for your favourite Pak dancer through the Pick the Pak contest.

“We’re out there dancing for (the fans),” said the recent University of Western Ontario kinesiology grad.

“This is how they can get involved.”

Dancing in front of thousands isn’t new to this lifelong dancer. For the past two years, Ms Hoffeldt has danced as part of the Western Dance Pak, which became the dance team for the London Lightning Bolts, a basketball team.

In her first year with the newly formed squad, Ms Hoffeldt served as team captain and went on to co-coach the team this past season.

“You’re not really dancing for the fans,” she said.

“But with them. Our job is to make them cheer harder for the home team.”

West Nile case in Thornhill From page 1.

Mr. La Marca said they are currently waiting for results of confirmatory testings in the woman’s case.

West Nile symptoms may include fever, muscle weakness, stiff neck, confusion, severe headache and a sudden sensitivity to light.

In rare cases, the virus can cause serious neurological illness.

Due to higher activities seen this year, Mr. La Marca said residents are strongly encour-

aged to prevent mosquito bites by using insect repellent, covering up and limiting outdoor activities during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.

In Dallas, Texas, a state of emergency has been declared over the spread of West Nile Virus, which has claimed 10 lives in Dallas County.

Last week, Hamilton public health said a woman in her 20s has been diagnosed with West Nile virus in the first case to be reported in that region this year.

Markham is one step closer to building a path that leads residents from Toogood Pond to the Rouge River valley.

Currently, the city’s plan to construct a path from Toogood Pond though Milne Dam Conservation Park to Bob Hunter Memorial Park is at the final stage of the environmental assessment process and awaiting the end of the required public comment period.

Once given the official OK from the province at the end of the month, the city’s next step is to hire a consultant to establish trail design details.

The environmental assessment outlines a preferred alignment through seven areas, which includes building about 10 new pedestrian bridges.

The total cost of building a linkage path is about $6 million and can extend over the next 10 years, the city’s engineer director Alan Brown said.

But construction would be completed in phases, with the first phase costing about $2.5 million. And if the environmental assessment process is on track, construction could start next summer, he added.

Once the design phase is complete, city staff are expected to bring a report back to council in early 2013 outlining the most fea-

sible and inexpensive place to start construction on the path.

The plan is to establish a main pathway that will act as a linkage to other existing trails within the city as well as match up with a newly established trail system, set up by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, Mr. Bown said.

“This is a strong council initiative with large public demand,” he said. “But there is still a lot of work to do.”

This trail will serve as one of the city’s backbone paths leading to and connecting existing trails, neighbourhoods and destinations.

During the planning process, city staff met with more than 20 local groups, including local ratepayers or community associations, cycling and pedestrian advisory and accessibility advisory committees.

There are still outstanding issues, such as parking, signage, navigation along the path, waste receptacles and pedestrian or cyclist safety. But those will be determined during the design phase, Mr. Brown said.

The city is also considering starting the environmental assessment process for similar paths in Milliken Mills and Thornhill.

The last day to make comments or pose objections is Aug. 27.

The City of Markham has undertaken a Class Environmental Assessment (EA) to identify the location and design concept of an interconnected Multi-Use Path (MUP) in the Rouge River Valley area, from 16th Avenue through Toogood Pond to the Milne Dam Conservation Park to Bob Hunter Memorial Park as indicated in the figure to the left. The need for this study was identified in previously approved City studies, such as the City of Markham’s Cycling, Pathways and Trails Master Plans, and the Cycling Pathways and Trails 5-Year Implementation Plan.

These plans recognize active recreation and active transportation as essential components for fostering environmental sustainability and the health and wellbeing of residents, and promoting the development of a more comprehensive and interconnected pedestrian and cycling network in Markham.

Running short on summer clothing? Running low on money?

The Clothing Cupboard at Promenade Mall wants to help.

The depot, which operates out of the mall’s Family Resource Centre, offers free gently used clothing to women, children and teens and now, thanks to new funding from the Region of York, free access by public transit.

Ellen Koblinsky, the depot’s co-ordinator, says a new transit subsidy program will pay bus fare to allow eligible low-income residents to access the service.

She wants to spread the word that it’s still summer at the depot — even though most clothing retailers have already switched seasons.

It can be hard to find T-shirts and shorts this time of year, she says, as retailers begin filling racks with cool-weather woollies for fall.

“We want to keep available things that people are wearing now,” she says. “Even in the fall, people are wearing short-sleeved shirts and light pants from summer.”

The region’s transit fare subsidy pilot program will provide $2,500 to Jewish Family Services family resource centre at the Thornhill mall to allow those who need it to travel to the clothing depot by bus for free.

Under the new program, about 100 community and health services and United Way of York Region-funded agencies will receive up to $2,500 each to purchase individual YRT/ Viva tickets to allow low-income residents to gain access to urgent basic needs.

“Improved access to transportation can have a tremendous impact in the life of a resident on a low income,” said Markham Deputy Mayor Jack Heath, chairperson of the region’s community and health services committee.

Ms Koblinsky said the free bus fare will be appreciated by many depot users who travel long distances, often by public transit and from as far away as Newmarket and East Gwillimbury.

In an attempt to lessen the “charity” stigma for clients, the clothing exchange has been located at the guest services in Promenade Mall, sharing space with the Family Resource Centre which offers a variety of programs for parents/caregivers and their children.

It is run by a partnership of the Bathurst Jewish Community Centre, Jewish Family and Child and Jewish Immigrant Aid Service.

Sponsors include United Way of York Region, Trillium Foundation, UJA Federation and the Regional Municipality of York.

“I was crying before I left.

As a kid, you don’t understand this is for your own good.”

Today, the youth are happily enmeshed in Canadian life and hoping to help others following in their footsteps.

They are volunteering with a program to ease the transition of new families to York Region schools.

Newcomer Orientation Week (NOW) is an intensive, three-day program to help

newly arrived students prepare for secondary school and give them a chance to make new friends. A similar, one-day orientation, Welcome and Information for Newcomers, is geared to newcomer families in elementary schools.

This week, peer leaders — fellow students who were newcomers in previous years and who speak a variety of languages — are being trained to help out at St. Elizabeth Catholic High School in Thornhill.

Next week, the NOW program will be held at Unionville High School and Father

Michael McGivney Catholic Academy and at Alexander Mackenzie High School, St. Elizabeth Catholic High School, St. Robert Catholic High School and St. Joan of Arc Catholic High School the following week.

The program for elementary school students will be held Aug. 29 at E.J. Sand Public School for students at several Thornhill public schools.

They are provided by Settlement and Education Partnership York Region with Catholic Community Services of York Region in partnership with York Region District School Board, York Catholic

District School Board and Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

“Students arrive in summer and everything’s new,” said Eileen Wan, assistant co-ordinator. “There is the language barrier. They’ve lost their friends, and they’re basically on their own.”

The key, she said, is building relationships.

Newcomer programs include scavenger hunts to learn about the school environment, skits to talk abou challenges of starting at a new school and how to manage changes, plus other games. Information on graduation requirements, school rules and extra-curricular activities are also provided.

The elementary program invites students and parents to take workshops simultaneously. Until she met her best friend in an English as a Second Language class, she said she felt teachers did not like her. “I was hopeless and helpless.” Now 20 and studying humanities, she said Canada feels like home.

“I want others to know, even if you don’t know anyone, you should say hi and get involved. Your English may not be good, but you can use your heart to communicate with people.”

A floor ball tournament takes place Saturday with each team playing three games and the top two will play for gold with one of the Waxers’ alumni playing for your team.

There are still spaces for players in all three divisions — junior (under 10), senior (11 to 14) and high school plus (15 and over).

Club champions declared at York Downs country club Julia Hodgson, Craig Neville and Jack Valianes took top honours when York Downs Golf and Country Club conducted their annual club championships Monday.

Hodgson, who will be entering her senior year at Memphis University, won the women’s championship flight with a three-round total of 221.

Meghan Allum finished second with a three-round score of 239.

In the ladies A flight handicap championship, Natalie Mercure had a 178 to take first place gross while Cindy Valianes was first place net with a 157.

In B flight, Connie McDermott won first place gross with a 189 and Cathy McElroy had a 150 to win first place net.

In C flight, Shelly Skerlan had a 217 to take first place gross, while Carole Ann Gleeson had a 152 to win first place net.

Runners’ disqualification among big Games stories

Justyn Warner was deprived of a bronze medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics when his 4 x 100 metre Canadian men’s relay team was disqualified for a lane violation.

One of many gestures to console the young athletes, the 25-yearold Markham man and teammates Gavin Smellie, Oluseyi Smith and Jared Connaughton were offered a consolation medal.

Not from the 2012 Olympics, but from Elijah Porter.

The Newfoundland boy, 10, was heartbroken after seeing Warner and his teammates denied their chance at the medal podium after Connaughton, who ran the third leg, inadvertently took one step on the lane line in the final turn during Saturday’s final at London’s Olympic Stadium.

In an effort to console the Canadian team, Elijah wrote them a letter, sharing his feelings and said he would give them his Timbits soccer medal as a reward for their efforts on the track.

Warner, who ran the anchor leg for Canada, accepted Porter’s kind words and gesture.

“10-year-old Elijah Porter knows the 4 x 100m team are heroes, do you?” Warner said on his Twitter account.

He also included a link to a photograph of the letter and the medal, adding, “This kid rocks.”

Jamaica won the gold medal, while the United States took the silver and Trinidad and Tobago, which finished fourth, moved up to take the bronze after Canada’s disqualification.

The’ disqualification was one of the biggest stories of the Games for Canadians as the thrill of victory and agony of defeat played out together within a matter of seconds.

The Canadians went from celebrating with flags draped around them, to being astonished and distraught, all either close to or in tears.

“I hope that there’s something we can do about that because that sucks, that just sucks,” Warner shortly after the race, referring to a protest Canada lodged unsuccessfully to contest the decision.

“To have a medal like that and just have it taken away, it sucks.”

While the Jamaicans and Americans were battling it out for first as expected — Usain Bolt brought Jamaica home in a world-record time of 36.84 — Warner’s strong finishing kick moved Canada up and into third place, behind the U.S. Or so they had thought.

The Canadian team, started off

by Brampton’s Gavin Smellie, left the track with a variety of emotions, including anger and sadness, but also believing themselves to be the third best in the world.

“We beat everyone fair and square, we earned that medal,” said Warner.

“If he had a pinky on the friggin’ line, it’s just ridiculous,” he said, his emotions boiling over. “I don’t know what happened, I just know that everyone has put in the work to get where we were, and it really sucks.”

Someone made a list of 365 promises found in the Scriptures - one for each day of the year.

There’s probably more. Here’s just a sampling: WORRIED ABOUT SOMETHING? God will give guidance because He cares about us (I Peter 5:7).

LONELY? Reach out to the Saviour.

He’s promised He will never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5).

FEARFUL? Even when the shadow of death falls across our pathway we need not fear evil because God is with us (Psalm 23:4).

IN NEED? God has stated He will supply all our needs (Philippians 4:19).

FEELING GUILT? The promised remedy is to confess our failures and to ask for forgiveness - from God and from those offended (I John 1:9).

There are many more promises in the Bible that apply to any situation we might face. It’s important to make sure we fulfill any conditions that might be attached.

This is another good reason why we should continuously be acquainting ourselves with God’s Word and claiming His promises.

It makes such a difference in life when we prove for ourselves God’s faithfulness.

LEACH, Verla Fern (nee Hopkins)

Verla passed away on August 10, 2012 from Alzheimer's after spending 12 years at Parkview Home in Stouffville, Ontario.

Her family sincerely appreciates all of the care and compassion shown to Verla by the dedicated staff and volunteers of Parkview's Oak Ridge wing.

Born in Vancouver, BC on October 22, 1931, Verla grew up the only child of Charles and Martha Hopkins in Glacier and later in Vernon, BC. She attended Mount Royal College in Calgary and graduated from Vernon High School.

Verla graduated from Teacher's College in Vancouver and began her teaching career in a one-room school in Canim Lake. Later she taught in Hope in the Fraser Valley where she met Bill (Willard) Leach, a constable in the RCMP, in 1950.

In 1951, Verla and Bill married in Vancouver, where their children were born. They moved to Toronto in 1964 and from there to a new home that they built in Pickering Township, just east of Markham, in 1967. Moving to the country introduced Verla to antique auctions and gardening, two of her favourite pastimes, and allowed her to indulge in her life-long love of animals.

Verla taught Art, Music and English in Markham and then left teaching to develop her hobbies, opening "Thursday's Child Antiques" in Markham and later in Unionville.

Verla loved people. Her specialty was bringing them together - planning, organizing and hosting many wonderful and memorable parties and reunions with family, friends and co-workers. She delighted in making the holidays special, decorating the house, preparing wonderful meals.

Verla had many other hobbies, including reading, baking, painting, and music.

Verla is sorely missed by her husband, Bill, her children, Valerie (JeanMichel), Kevin (Sonya) and Randy (Karen) and her grandchildren, Kevin Jr., Connor, Michael and Maura.

A memorial service and celebration will be held at a date yet to be determined. In keeping with her wishes, Verla will return to the mountains of her beloved British Columbia.

HOOD, Mary "Mollie" Lillian.

Peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Tuesday, August 14th, 2012 in her 91st year. Predeceased by her beloved husband William Hood.

Loving mother of James, Robin, Greg, Brian (Lynne) and Chris. Proud grandmother of Kim (Richard), Shawn, Tara and Ryan. Great grandmother of Josh, Katie, Ava and Matthew.

Predeceased by her brother Victor Secret.

A special thanks for all of the compassionate care she received from Diane, Debbie and Cathy.

Friends will be received at DIXONGARLAND FUNERAL HOME 166 Main St., North (Markham Rd.) Markham on Friday, August 17th from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral service will be held in the chapel on Saturday at 11 am. Interment will follow at Buttonville Cemetery, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army.
