The annual Night It Up food festival takes place this weekend in Markham. The festival features fan favourites such as stinky tofu – the unofficial street food of Taiwan – the annual concrete classic nineman volleyball tournament and the annual three-on-three basketball shootout competition. But food is the main attraction. This weekend marks the 15th year of the Asian food festival that takes over the Markham Civic Centre at night. NIU, hosted by Power Youth Unit, is one of the longest Asian street food markets and food is the main attraction with more than 100 food vendors. “Everyone knows about the food,” said Power Youth Unit president Dawn Siu. “This event has become a tradition.” While authentic Asian street food is the name of the game, there are several fusion foods to sink your teeth into, such as Japanese crepes, shaved ice and fried ice cream. New this year is the addition of Hawaiian Poke bowl as well as new food sensation, instant noodle fries. See REEL, page 8.

Drought hitting home on York Region farms BY LISA QUEEN

lqueen@yrmg.com

When farmer Jim Hulshof isn’t checking two weather apps on his phone, he is gazing up at the sky wondering when rain will come. The Stouffville farmer believes this in one of the three driest summers he’s seen since he first began helping farm the crops as a child 50 years ago. “It’s a trying year more than anything else, just because of lack of water. Very horrible. Dry, dry, dry, dry,” he said, adding there has probably been a quarter of the normal rainfall since early May. Hulshof’s distress over the dry summer comes as David Phillips, senior climatologist with Environment Canada, says York Region and southern Ontario are experiencing a severe drought and as the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority asks residents and businesses to scale back their water consumption. Hulshof irrigates 40 acres of his 50-acre farm on Bloomington Road east of Hwy. 48. He grows vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, sweet corn, pumpkins and squash and operates a retail market on-site.

Even so, all the crops are suffering from heat stress. For those farmers who don’t use irrigation systems, Hulshof believes they will be looking at a fraction of the yield they normally get unless the drought ends soon. “For individuals who don’t have irrigation, I’m going to call it half a year where they’re going to get half a crop, more than anything else. Anything that is a shallow-rooted crop, it’s a tough go. I know that for sure. I have about 10 acres of oats. It’s a half a crop. There’s hardly anything there. There’s just no moisture,” he said. “I find it very difficult to establish any plants, if you’re trying to transplant, because there’s just no soil moisture to start off with. And if you’re seeding sweet corn and stuff like that, it’s very difficult for germination just because it’s not there, the moisture. So, that’s tough.” Even when it has rained a handful of times since the beginning of May, it has often arrived as torrential showers, which has made it difficult for arid land to absorb the water, Hulshof said. “You need a gentle rain at first just to soften it up just to absorb some of the water. That’s the problem now, when you do get rain now, it just

runs off, it doesn’t help at all,” he said, adding the mild winter meant little snow melted into the ground. Last Friday night’s storm created severe flooding in the Holland Marsh. On the positive side, the lack of humidity this season has meant less disease and fewer insects attacking crops, Hulshof said. Phil Smalley, who owns a 1,400acre farm in Mount Albert that produces potatoes, soybeans, corn and wheat, said the dry weather is hurting production.

marsh flooded “It’s definitely having an effect on the crops. We do have some irrigation, but we can’t water every acre that we crop, maybe 15 per cent of that,” he said. “It (the drought) is definitely going to have a yield effect, sure. You don’t really know until you harvest it, eh? But the corn yield is going to be down, and the soybeans. The wheat is not going to be as big kernels as normal. And that and the potatoes, the yield on them is going to be definitely going to be down by, I would say, compared to a normal year, the yield is going to be down by at least 25 per cent.” Some areas are hurting from the

drought even more than Mount Albert, Smalley said. Environment Canada’s Phillips agrees, although he said most areas of York Region and southern Ontario are suffering from the dry conditions to some degree. “Dryness is everywhere in York Region, with degrees of dryness varying between south and north,” he said. For example, Canada Day storms brought only 3.5 millimetres of rain in Buttonville, while the unofficial total in Aurora was 11.1 mm. Last Friday night, only 2.8 mm fell at Buttonville, while the unofficial amount in Aurora was 12.5 mm. Pointing out how difficult it is for the parched land to absorb a quick deluge of rain, Phillips said all areas need some steady precipitation. “What we need is a four-day rainfall with 15 to 20 mm each day. Not all in one hour because most of it will not go to work for you. (The rains) fill the sewers and cause intersection flooding but they don’t really get down to the root zone, ” he said. “We’re not quite to the dog days of summer, but people are already abuzz with how dry it’s been and how warm.” At Buttonville, where there is an Environment Canada weather sta-

tion, about 90 mm of rain fell in May, June and up to July 11, less than half the 188 mm that would normally fall during that time, Phillips said. “Each of those months, those periods, was less than normal so it’s been consistently dry and it’s been really dry particularly in the last three or four weeks. Most of that rain that occurred in June was really in the first 10 days,” he said. “It’s really been scorching in the last four weeks. The farmers are really hurting.” From June 12 to July 11, less than 10 mm of rain fell at Buttonville, where there would normally be 75 to 80 mm. There have also been 12 days in the region so far since May where the temperature has climbed above 30C, compared to seven days in a typical late spring and early summer, Phillips said. Last year, by this same time, York Region had had one day above 30C and 244 mm of rain had fallen at Buttonville compared to this year’s 90 mm. “It’s an enormous contrast. It’s almost as if last year was too wet and too cool and this year has been too hot and too dry for too long. Last year, there was too much weather and this year, there’s been not enough,” Phillips said.

‘Getting 100 per cent isn’t something you can pull off overnight’ By Teresa Latchford

tlatchford@yrmg.com

Getting a perfect grade isn’t something you stumble into, according to one York Region scholar. Newmarket High School’s Jeff Niu is one of six York Region students who are graduating with a 100-percent grade average calculated from their six best Grade 12 course marks. But those wanting to achieve the same had better have that goal going into Grade 9, according to Niu. “Getting 100 per cent isn’t something you can pull off overnight,” Niu said. “I wouldn’t have much advice to offer a student entering their final year who asks how to get the perfect mark.” The scholar’s first word of advice is to take courses you have an interest in, because perfection is more attainable if you’re studying a subject you are interested in. Second, do your homework because the only way to get better and faster at homework is to practise. Finally, surround yourself with like-minded people who will JANANI motivate you to challenge yourself SATHIASELAN and make learning fun. In the fall, Niu will head to the University of Waterloo to study mechatronics, the design of computer-controlled electromechanical systems. He was a member of the school’s robotics team and often participated in “hackathon” events. Father Michael McGivney graduates Malavan Ragulojan and MALAVAN Janani Sathiaselan tied for second RAGULOJAN place in the region’s top scholars list, as both Markham students achieved a 99.83-per-cent average. They echo Niu’s advice of being among peers who have a passion for learning. “My peers in the IB program were very supportive,” Sathiaselan said. “It was nice to face the trials and challenges of the intensive program together because we really understood and supported each other.” The scholars agree that there is no short cut when it comes to academic achievement, only hard work, dedication and having the support of those around you. Three impressive students from Bayview Secondary School in Richmond Hill earned perfect 100 per cent marks: Edward Li, Guan Wang and Monica Xu.

Shocking reminder to keep both hands on wheel

Gridlock symptom of larger problems

A

t a movie theatre last week, during the commercials that preceded the movie we had paid to see, I literally jumped in my seat in a violent reaction. I gasped out loud as I viewed, for the first time, images of a young man who, in the previous few seconds is seen picking up and glancing at his phone on the passenger seat of the car he’s driving — ram into something. Air bags implode and one can only imagine the horrendous scene that unfolds prior to us seeing the same young man, Andrew, confined to a wheelchair in a hospital room. He is being attended to by a kind young nurse who wipes away his drool and then offers to move him towards the window to take a look at the nice day outside. Unable to show or voice appreciation, his vacant stare reminds us of the life sentence he will serve for indulging in a moment of curiosity and taking his eyes off the road. So moved was I by this powerful 60-second commercial created by Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation, that I contacted them about how I could help spread the word. I learned that the ministry is targeting distracted driving this summer with a powerful marketing campaign that urges people to #PutDownThePhone. Although cellphone-related distractions are huge, cell phones are not the only problem causing distracted driving deaths in Ontario — deaths that have more than doubled since 2000. Distracted driving occurs any time that we take our eyes off the road and certainly any time we take our hands off the wheel. So, in conjunction with spreading the word about the ministry’s incredible initiative, I want to further drive home this important message by encouraging you to be consistently mindful of where your hands are any time your car is on the road. This means that if you take a hand off the wheel to change the channel on your radio, to eat an

Sara Dimerman apple or sandwich, or even to hold your passenger’s hand, then you are distracted, whether you want to admit it or not. I urge you to practise mindfulness while driving by regularly reminding yourself to keep #BothHandsOnTheWheel. Putting your phone in your purse or glove compartment when driving, installing a bluetooth device that is voice-activated if you need to make or take a call while driving, and pulling over to the side of the road if you want to eat something or need to make a reminder note to yourself, are ways of ensuring you are not being a distracted driver. I know this is not easy. I, too, have felt the pull of wanting to check a text while driving, of telling myself I will be careful as I munch on an apple. Lately, however, just remembering the impact of the dramatic commercial is enough to bring me back to the harsh reality that, as the ad reminds us, “it happens fast” — that it only takes a second for one’s life, and the life of others around you, to change forever. I’m sure you’d agree that nothing is worth that. If you’d like to help spread the word, please tweet and post messages on Facebook using the hashtags #PutDownThePhone and #BothHandsOnTheWheel. Share your stories about how you’ve helped prevent yourself from being a distracted driver. Is commuter gridlock the problem or a symptom of a larger problem? After all these decades, why has it not been solved if it’s the problem? Why classify commuter travels a symptom, rather than problem? It changes the focus of what needs to be solved. Instead of figuring out how to get more cars, buses and commuter trains working, what if we looked at reducing the number of travellers? I don’t mean that, like me, everyone starts working from home. This is not practical for many businesses. I used to be one who had to either sit in traffic, subways or commuter trains to get to work. If we think outside the box, commuter problems would be reduced if workers lived closer to their place of work. While we spend enormous energy figuring out more ways to get more

people to travel larger distances, we spend relatively little time figuring out how to reduce the distance from home to work. I appreciate there are a number of opposing factors involved. A home is acquired relative to what a household can afford. This cost reduces the further you get from the heart of Toronto. Is there a breaking point? I travel to Silicon Valley frequently. A number of years ago, I read an article in the local paper that the schools were having problems hiring teachers. The teachers could not afford to live in Silicon Valley and where they could afford, the commute time was prohibitive. I suggest the current status quo of increasing distances between workplace and home locations cannot be supported over time. What is the alternative? While I don’t think there would ever be a freeze on new jobs offered in Toronto, new commerce centres could be identified and companies given incentives to establish

SEND A LETTER:

Email letters to boneill@yrmg.com there — maybe in places like Bancroft, Hanover, Perth and other smaller communities. This may be a radical idea, but I think worth exploring. If commuting is reduced, more time is spent together as a family, with long-term benefits to children and parents. I remember the stress of having to get our daughter to daycare in time for my wife and I to catch the GO train to Union Station. Many nights, we only had time when we got home make dinner, bathe our daughter and put her to bed. Our current transit plans are reactive and not proactive. Until we look at the real problems, the symptoms will only get worst for each generation.

Last Saturday, shortly after 7 p.m., a police officer was walking through the parking lot at the York Regional Police, 5 District, located at 8700 McCowan Rd., Markham, when he noticed a man sleeping in the driver’s seat of a Toyota Sienna van. As he approached the van to check on the man’s well-being, the officer immediately noticed a strong smell of alcohol coming from inside the van, as well as an open case of beer.

After waking up the driver and speaking with him, it became apparent he was impaired and that he had no idea that he was in a police parking lot. The 34-year-old male driver from Toronto has been charged with one count of impaired operation of a motor vehicle - care and control and his driver’s licence was suspended. He was one of 15 drivers arrested by York police for impaired driving in less than 72 hours, between July 8 and 10. Police urge citizens to report impaired drivers by calling 911 as part of the Safe Roads ... Your Call program.

With more than 12,000 people on York Region’s waiting list for subsidized housing, an additional $23 million in funding from the provincial and federal governments announced Wednesday is welcome news, but not enough to solve the region’s affordable housing challenges, regional chair Wayne Emmerson said. “Mr. Minister (new Housing Minister Chris Ballard), we’re going to be asking for more,” he said at the

announcement at Tom Taylor Place in Newmarket. “We’re shovel-ready and shovel-worthy to go forward. “It’s a good start. We can’t do everything… We will do what we can with it.” The region also wants to review its waiting list to determine the need of everyone on it, Emmerson said. The region will now determine how best to use the additional funding, community and health services commissioner Adelina Urbanski said. Some money will go to upcoming subsidized housing projects

in Vaughan and Markham. A 250unit building will be constructed on Hwy. 7, west of Main Street, in Unionville. Regional staff will analyze where other funds will be allocated, Urbanski said. “We’re always in various stages of planning with projects, so when we say we are shovel-ready and we have projects ready to go, it means we’re in various stages of planning. Some haven’t come forward yet, but we’re looking at where property is available, how big might (the buildings) be, where is the next municipality.

OK, we’ve built in Newmarket, we’ve built in Richmond Hill, we’re building in Markham — where’s the next location? Because all nine municipalities want affordable housing, so we have to make sure we provide for all our citizens.” The region will look at the needs in municipalities such as East Gwillimbury, Whitchurch-Stouffville and King, which have little or no subsidized housing projects, Urbanski said. tional $23 million in funding, with two-thirds coming from Queen’s Park and one-third from Ottawa. That comes in addition to $45 million earmarked for the region through a joint $685 million investment from the federal and provincial governments to build and repair more than 15,000 affordable housing units and provide rental and down payment assistance to more than 16,000 families and individuals across Canada. “The big issue is the money is flowing. Richmond Hill homeowners continue to ride the crest of a housing price wave that saw double-digit growth across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) during the second quarter of 2016, according to a survey released yesterday. The Royal LePage Housing Price Survey and Market Survey Forecast released Wednesday reported the highest national year-overyear gain seen in five years – primarily in the Greater Vancouver and Toronto areas. The median prices of two-storey homes and bungalows in the GTA rose 11.4 per cent and 10.7 per cent year-over-year respectively, the survey showed, with strongest growth found in regions outside of Toronto’s city limits. Richmond Hill experienced the largest gains in appreciation east of British Columbia, with aggregate prices surging 21.3 per cent to $992,632 — in part due to increased foreign buyer activity, the survey said. Markham house prices were also boosted by foreign buyers, seeing an increase of 12.4

per cent year-over-year in the second quarter to reach $825,753. “Multiple offers are now the norm, as rockbottom interest rates and the relative value of the yuan and U.S. dollar have encouraged many to buy Canadian, resulting in an unprecedented level of demand within the region,” noted the survey. Vaughan was not far behind, with prices increasing by 10.1 per cent to $780,699. Home builders appear to be responding to the price jumps. The Toronto Real Estate Board, which reported a 17 per cent rise in June home prices earlier this month, said at the time that lack of supply in the city was “of paramount importance.” New numbers on housing construction starts, however, may give some relief. Housing starts jumped to an annualized pace of 218,333 units in June, the Canada Mortgage & Housing Corporation said Monday. That’s the highest since September and a 17 per cent increase from a month earlier – suggesting builders are responding the rising prices in Vancouver and Toronto areas. - with files from The Toronto Star

Ontario’s most vulnerable citizens are getting a helping hand from the province, starting with $756,200 for community agencies in Markham and the surrounding area. Minister of Community and Social Services and Oak Ridges-Markham MPP Helena

Participation House serves 114 men and women ranging in ages from 20 to 86 across seven different sites in York Region. The agency aims to enhance the quality of life of

The funding will go to repair the driveways and the air conditioning system, while a new roof, new flooring and new brickwork will be installed as well. Markham, Richmond Hill athletes punch tickets to Rio By MICHAEL HAYAKAWA

mhayakawa@yrmg.com

Three York Region residents will be making the trio to Rio de Janeiro to compete in the 2016 Summer Olympics as part of Canada’s track and field team, Athletics Canada announced Monday. Named to the 65-member contingent were Markham residents Andre De Grasse and Phylicia George and Richmond Hill resident Bolade Ajomale. De Grasse, a 21-year-old Milliken Mills High School graduate who will be making his Olympic debut, will run for Canada in three events, the 100 and 200 metres and 4x100m relay. At the Canadian Championships and Rio Selection Trials in Edmonton last weekend, De Grasse won the 100m with a time of 9.99 seconds. Also running in the 200m, De Grasse finished third, crossing the finish line in 20.32 seconds. Making her second Olympic appearance for Canada, George, 28, will run in the women’s 100m hurdles and the 4x100m relay team. A former student at Father Michael McGivney Catholic Academy, George won the 100m hurdles with a time of 12.88 seconds. George also finished second in the women’s 100m at the Canadian Championships and Rio Selection Trials with a time of 11.27 seconds. A graduate of Alexander Mackenzie High School where he won the gold medals in the senior boys 100m and 200m at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations championships in his final year in 2014, Ajomale will make his Olympic debut as a member of Canada’s men’s 4x100m relay team. Ajomale competed in the men’s 100m at the Canadian Championships and Rio Selection Trials and finished fourth in a personal best time of 10.23.

The Gardener’s Solution for IF YOU suffer from low back pain and sciatica, you are one of over 2 million adults in Canada with this often crippling spinal condition. Things are even worse for you if you are a regular gardener and not just the average person. Because the pain caused by these debilitating conditions can either lay you up, and all you can do is watch your garden take over... or you can still chance taking back control, but the condition will rear it’s ugly head at every possible inconvenient opportunity. Back Pain and Sciatica Can: ✓ Cause pain in the hip, groin, buttock, hamstring, knee, calf, ankle and foot ✓ Cramps of the buttock, hamstring, calf and foot ✓ Predispose you to more frequent pulled muscles and strains ✓ Weakness and muscle wasting if allowed to persist ✓ Crawling or tingling sensations anywhere between your waist and your toes ✓ Numbness anywhere between your waist and your toes Left untreated, the intense pain can rapidly wear you down and drain the joy out of life. That is, until now...

Recent advances in the treatment of sciatica and lower back pain have led to the development and huge success of Advanced Bio-Structural Technique. The excellent results of Chiropractic have been published in major medical journals. With success rates as high as 90% some back surgeons are recommending their patients try Chiropractic first before having back surgery. In Markham, you can try Advanced Bio-Structural Correction at Elite Care Chiropractic – the office of low back pain and sciatica relief Chiropractor Dr. Zunaid Kagdi. Dr. Kagdi and his team of fully trained spinal care staff have helped over 1,000 patients find relief from their agonising back pain and sciatica. According to Dr. Kagdi, “We focus on precisely diagnosing the cause of your low back pain and sciatica; and a programme for reconstructing the damaged area causing the pain; this means long-term results for most people.” Because the treatment is non-surgical, safe and easy, most patients report an almost immediate relief from their pain. Patient Sean D. from Richmond Hill says, “My back pain was unbearable but the worst thing was the searing burning pain I felt in my buttock and leg. I couldn’t work or do anything useful and

the drugs my MD prescribed hardly did anything. I am so happy with the results. I no longer live in pain and fear of the future… I only wish I knew about Chiropractic sooner.” Your invitation for a comprehensive consultation and examination to pinpoint the cause of your low back pain and sciatica... Markham Economist has teamed up Elite Care Chiropractic, to help gardeners find relief from their persistent back and sciatic pain. All you have to do to receive a thorough diagnostic examination and a comprehensive easy to understand report on your state of health is call 905-554-8444. Mention this article (CODE: GARD07) and Elite Care Chiropractic will happily reduce their usual consultation fee of $167 to just $27. But hurry, due to obvious reasons – this is a time limited offer. My advice, don’t suffer a moment longer... Find out if Advanced Bio-Structural Correction Spinal Care can help you, book a consultation with Dr. Kagdi and his team now by calling 905-554-8444, they are waiting to take your call today. They actually treat the cause of

your health problem, not just your symptoms. That’s why hundreds of grateful gardeners tell them “You gave me back my garden!” Over the years, they’ve treated thousands of patients with back problems and sciatica. The vast majority of them have enjoyed superior, lasting relief. In fact, many who’ve suffered and have tried other remedies have told them they gave them back their lives! Call them now and get a full and thorough examination to pinpoint the cause of your problem for just $27, the normal cost of such an exam is $167 so you will save $140! Don’t suffer from the pain and immobility any longer. Discover the natural treatment that may eliminate the cause of your problem and give you the safe, lasting relief you deserve. Call them now at 905-554-8444 and cut out or tear off this valuable article now and take it to your appointment. You’ll be entitled to a comprehensive examination to diagnose the cause of your problem – and you’ll be on your way to safe, lasting relief! Don’t delay your important diagnosis and treatment another moment! You can even call on the weekend and

leave a message on their answer machine to secure your spot as they promise to return all calls; and during the week they are very busy, so if they don’t pick up straight away do leave a message.

Markham’s Williams named to Olympic rugby squad By MICHAEL HAYAKAWA

mhayakawa@yrmg.com

Two years ago, Charity Williams was part of a Canadian women’s rugby team that competed in the Youth Olympics and won a silver medal. Now 19 years of age, the Markham Irish Canadian Rugby Football player will be going to another Olympics. Only this time, the stage will be far bigger as she was recently named to the 12-member Canadian women’s rugby Olympic team headed to the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro next

month. For Williams, who can man the scrum half, wing and hooker positions, her presence on Canada’s team that will be playing in the seven-aside sport when it makes its Olympic debut is a dream come true. Just as significant, it represents a rapid ascent up the competitive ladder for Williams, who first took up the game just a few years back when she was a Grade 9 student in high school. “To be going to my first Olympics is such an accomplishment for me,

especially because I am only 19,” she said after the official Team Canada selections were made Friday. “Honestly, I don’t think there are any words really to describe this feeling. My one and only dream has come true while leaving me the opportunity to seize it again and again in future games.” In being chosen for the team, Williams acknowledged it was not a given that she would be on it despite being in the national team program for the last three years. “I wouldn’t say I was completely confident that I would make selec-

The rest would be up to the coaching staff, who looked at the year overall and training and came up with the best 12 they think will win Olympic gold.” She anticipates her role will be to come off the bench for Canada when the competition begins. “I have complete belief in my team and I truly think we can come home with a gold medal for Canada’s debut in seven’s Olympic rugby,” she said.

Markham player part of rugby win over France Just call Frederique Rajotte a world champion. In women’s rugby that is. The 22-year-old Markham native, who honed her skills on the pitch with the Markham Irish Canadian Rugby Club was a member of Canada’s entry that tackled the 2016 Women’s Rugby Super Series championship, its first ever, after they defeated France 29-10 in the final game of the tournament in Salt Lake City, Utah Saturday. Manning the 11 position (blind side wing) for Canada during the 15-aside tournament and in making her competitive debut at this level of play where she earned her first cap in their opening 52-17 win over England July 1, Since 1983

Rajotte played an integral role in the finale as she scored one try. Also a member of the Canadian team who played with the Markham Irish Canadian team was Barrie resident Emily Belchos. While winning the title represented the icing on the cake, Rajotte said just having the opportunity to represent Canada on the international stage is an honour in itself and one she won’t soon forget. “All of the hard work that we individually put in throughout the year in gearing up for the tournament paid off and we were able to connect as a team and show what Canadian rugby is all about,” she said upon returning to her Montreal residence where she’s attending Concordia University. Entering the tournament, Rajotte saw no reason why their team could not be among those vieing for the title. — MikeHayakawa

SUNNY RENOVATIONS BARTON, Daniel It is with great sadness that the Barton family announces the passing of Daniel Barton, age 80, on June 28, 2016. Danny’s greatest love was his wife Beverley (Sweetie), to whom he was happily married for 57 years. Danny leaves behind his 3 children, Mark, Michael & Susan & their spouses who all live close by. Danny was Papa to 9 grandchildren & 7 great-grandchildren. Danny was the eldest son of 9 children of which he leaves behind 3 sisters & 2 brothers. Danny was in the automotive industry for over 55 years where he was respected and known as a very principled man. Danny had a great passion for sharing with others all he had learned from the bible. Danny served for many years as an elder in the local congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He has now fulfilled the Bible’s words at 2 Timothy 4:7: “ I have fought the fine fight, I have run the course to the finish, I have observed the faith.” Danny will always be remembered for his kindness, his generosity and his loyalty to his god, Jehovah. Memorial to be held at Ballantrae Golf & Country Club, 1 Final Round, Stouffville, ON on July 17th at 7:00. NOTE: Due to safety and spacing, please respect the family’s wishes for no children under the age of 10.
