Colt Emanuel Miller looks for a teammate to pass off to as Bill Crothers Prep took on Ahuntsic Academy of Montreal during Crothers Invitational, Sunday. The Colts won 93-58.

Four years later, the proposed 20,000-seat, NHL-ready arena in downtown Markham still haunts the city. During the wake of the GTA Centre debates, the Markham Citizens Coalition for Responsive Government (MCCRG) was formed as an opposition group to the arena deal. It wasn’t until recently, the city released consultant reports related to the project, which died on the council table after several public marathon meetings. The MCCRG recently analyzed the reports and didn’t like much of what they found. “After reading these damning reports, it’s still a shocker some (councillors) continued to support this to the final vote,” said the group’s director, Marilyn Ginsburg. “Someone needs to take ownership so the community can move on. This won’t go away, people are still upset.” Councillor Karen Rea, a former MCCRG director, started the Freedom of Information process back in 2012 to have the documents released. The information in the reports did not justify the project, she said. “From day 1, these reports said it was not a good deal,” Rea said. “I don’t know why (council) continued along this process.” Rea referred to the GTA Centre as a See ‘TIME’, page 5.

mistake, a blip in Markham’s history. “The city was polarized and council was divided over this,” she said. “It’s over and done with. It’s time to move forward. The city is working on rebuilding trust.” One way to help the community move forward is to hear an apology, Ginsburg added. “People want to hear the mayor say it was a bad idea,” she said. “It’s said it takes a lot to build trust and very little to lose it.” But looking back, Markham was on the “inside track,” said Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “Markham has not lost one iota of its reputation,” he said. “I’ve heard a lot how many were impressed with how big Markham was thinking. This was not a mistake.” That confidence in Markham can be seen every day, with the number of new residents moving in, he added. The consultant reports looked at the costs of the arena, both construction and infrastructure costs, as well as the number of events or concerts in order for the proposed arena to be viable and both the tangible and intangible benefits to the city. After analyzing the reports, the MCCRG claim the reports paint a damaging picture with high risk to the city. According the citizens’ group, costs were excluded, projections were too aggressive and revenues were overstated. “These were expert economists,” Ginsburg said. “Some of it was junk. It’s embarrassing.” While the reports noted the initial deal was not a good one, argued Scarpitti, the Raymond James Report advised the city not to turn its back on the proposal and to continue to work toward a better financial framework. “That’s what I spent the next two years doing, improving the proposal,” he said. “The Raymond James report didn’t say to step away. It didn’t say turn back. It said to go and make it better.” Scarpitti also said he would consider the deal again today in an effort to make the financial framework better. Another contentious report – from Daniel Mason and Brand Humphreys – argued how a 20,000-seat, NHL arena would benefit the city, both in tangible and intangible terms. On the one hand, the report states “building a new arena did not generate any tangible economic benefits for the city,” where tangible benefits are described as more spending and more jobs in Markham as well as more tax revenues for the city. On the other hand, the report went on to say the “intangible benefits of a new arena in any community can justify some public subsidy for construction.” Intangible benefits include more local entertainment, a sense of civic pride and community and putting Markham on the map. The economic activity – about $2 billion worth – surrounding the new downtown Edmonton arena, which is set to open for the 2016/2017 Edmonton Oilers season, is enough to disprove the lack of tangible benefits argument, Scarpitti said. Last summer, during a Federation of Canadian Municipalities conference, Scarpitti toured Edmonton’s new arena. “All around the steel structure was being built up,” he said. “There were cranes in the ground. It’s easy to look at where the NHL expansion is going, to where arenas are already built.” More than $700,000 was spent on consultant reports, Rea said. “I’m glad the reports are out. But the money spent belonged to the taxpayer,” she said. “The reports were released. The money has been spent. It’s time to let it go.”

IRISHWEEK B

I know that we are a bit ahead of things here, but if we postpone to next week, through the timing of the Economist, we're too late for the event. So... better early than late we thought. Secondly, the Irish specialties that we feature here will be available as featured 'til St. Paddy's Day.

ARRy'S TEA AND MORE!

We'll be featuring everything that you will need for a lovely irish tea. We'll have the four flavours of tea – irish Breakfast, Gold Blend, Orange Pekoe and Decaf. Reg. $6.99-$8.99. And since a tea party is not a tea party without Crumpets, we'll have a feature on those as well Reg. $2.49, and since a crumpet is so much better with jam, we'll have Greaves Peach Jam too. OFF Reg. $4.59/250ml jar. The tea and the rest will be featured at

SAuSAGES GuINNESS

Simply put, this is the best sausage we make at the store… at least in my opinion. We start with coarsely-ground lean pork, some mild spices, some minced apple, and use Guinness beer as the requisite moisture. Steam these for five minutes, brown them in a pan, throw them in a sausage bun with crumbled bacon and old OFF cheddar, and voila… sheer deliciousness! THIS WEEK Reg. $5.99/lb.

CORNED

This is one of the items that my dad taught me how to make many years ago. It is one of those items that was made by necessity centuries ago because there was no refrigeration, but has now become part of our food culture. For years it was called naval beef, as it was the method of serving meat during long sea voyages.

Today it's much easier; you just drive over to the Grocer – although some days it feels like a voyage – get your corned beef, and know that it has history. There are two deals this week, the first is that we'll have a feature of OFF and the second part is that you'll get a free cabbage and a recipe to make Corned Beef and Cabbage.

IRISH

For the occasion we’ll have loads of spring flowers, green accents and shamrocks in a variety of sizes. Further, we’ll have an imposing display of Hydrangeas, a plant that does well in Ireland‚ in either white, blue or pink. They are 6” size pots with multi blooms.

We’ll be making lots of this, beginning Thursday, and you’ll find that it’s a great complement to most of our Irish comfort food dinners — especially the Irish Stew and Guinness Stew! EACH THIS WEEK

Our next item is Guinness Beef Stew. If you've been to the Museum in Dublin, it's one of the recipes that are available on the fifth floor. To make this, we use beef, sweet onions, carrots, potatoes and Guinness of course. Sold in 4"x5" foils. Reg. $9.95 ea.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Why should York keep waiting for subway?

Arena reports echo citizen concerns

L

eave it to Canada’s largest national newspaper to pooh-pooh the idea of a Yonge subway extension line to Richmond Hill in a Monday editorial. The Toronto Star called the seven-kilometre link from the Finch terminal station to Richmond Hill, “an exercise in folly” and Toronto Mayor John Tory has told CP24: “We just can’t do it. How irresponsible would it be to have the trains, when they get to Finch, be so full, no one can get on?” For good measure, Toronto Transit Commission chairperson and Toronto councillor Josh Colle chimed in: “We’re nowhere near being in the position to extend Yonge north. It’s just not feasible right now.” The key words Colle said were “right now.” While a group of 16 York Region mayors, councillors and senior staff went to Ottawa to meet Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last week to push for infrastructure funds — as is their responsibility to the citizens of York Region — anyone who is expecting immediate action “right now” on the Yonge Street extension is dreaming in technicolour. There would be a ton of work to do before shovels could hit the ground on such a massive project. Consider, for instance, how long it’s taking to get the subway to Vaughan from Downsview station. The conception for the project was drawn up round the turn of the century and if it opens as scheduled, we’re looking at about a 17-year timeline. So when Colle says “right now,” does he mean within a decade or so or realistically speaking, are we talking closer to 20 years? If it’s the latter, which is far more reasonable, consider the number of transit projects that will be completed in Toronto by then. For starters, the Eglinton crosstown LRT will have long been in service. Then, you’ll have the Scarborough subway extension. Presumably, Mayor Tory’s Smartrack plan will have been implemented, and if all goes according to plan,

Tim Kelly by the early 2030s, it’s possible the downtown relief line might be underway or even finished. The Star argues all of these Toronto transit lines must be in place before a link to Richmond Hill should be considered. Why not proceed with planning, engineering and construction on a Richmond Hill line while all of these other projects are in the works? Why must it be an either/or proposition? Given the length of time complicated, massive transit projects with inevitable delays take, surely several can be underway simultaneously. The other important point is that improvements in subway efficiencies should mean more trains can run each hour, providing more capacity on each line and more passenger service. The TTC is working over the next three years to upgrade its 60-yearold system so that trains will run far more efficiently. That can only make the system smoother, more reliable and more open for expansion in the future. As gridlock on our roads continues to get worse over the next decade while our population grows, the call for transit solutions will only get stronger. The goal is to get people out of their cars and off the roads. The Star seems to think transit’s the ideal solution for Torontonians but, evidently, it thinks those of us in York Region can wait and wait and wait some more. But there’s no reason to wait indefinitely. Let’s get started on a Yonge line extension to Richmond Hill so we can ride the Rocket within 20 years.

Thanks to Councillor Karen Rea’s perseverance, reports on the proposed arena have now been made public. The full set of reports may be viewed on her website: http://karenrea.ca/ arena-documents/ The City of Markham hired the services of well respected consultants for the purpose of checking the feasibility of undertaking a project of this size in 2011-2012. Needless to say, the results of the reports have only recently been released. It was during this struggle over the arena, that a concerned group of citizens was born, Markham Citizens for Responsive Government or MCCRG. Members of MCCRG and other concerned residents were alarmed at the number of red flags appearing, as citizens continued questioning the promises being made, while researching other such existing models in the world. Unfortunately concerns such as: “financial risks,” “due diligence,” “cash flow burden,” “debt to Markham,” etc. were not taken seriously by many in council, as these issues were relentlessly pursued during presentations in the chambers. Interestingly enough, as I read through the reports, I see that many of the concerns raised all along by citizens were also addressed by the consultants, who were paid to write the reports. A few examples would include: “no supporting documentation, ... are not useful forecasts ... make unrealistic assumptions ... projections deemed likely too aggressive ... no property taxes to be paid to the city...” etc. Upon reading the reports, you will soon understand why they were not made public, prompt-

ing Ms Rea to go through the Freedom of Information route in order to facilitate the release. If you are looking for a quick read, please refer to this link for a summarized version, completed by MCCRG: http://mccrg.org/ secret-reports/ Remember, Markham’s taxpayers paid more than $700,000 for these reports. Checking it out will be time well spent exercising your democratic rights and informing yourself.

M. Ferguson Markham

Election reform long overdue Election reform in Canada is long overdue. It is surprising to note the provincial, federal and the municipal lawmakers want to be in office, election after election. As a concerned citizen, I strongly feel the lawmakers should have only two terms, fulfilling the duties as the elected representatives of the people.

SEND A LETTER: Email letters to mbeck@yrmg.com JOIN CONVERSATION: Be the first to comment at yorkregion.com

The most powerful nation and our southern neighbour United States of America has the office of the elected president only for two terms. I do not understand why our lawmakers do not want to relinquish office after two terms. The federal and the provincial governments should enact laws to limit the terms of the lawmakers. The change of administration will bring in new ideas and reform that will enrich the country and prosperity of the people.

CORRECTION

York police have charged three men accused of stealing two luxury vehicles from the same Thornhill home last week. Officers were called to a Bathurst Street and Rutherford Road area home at 8:45 a.m. March 3. A black Mercedes S55 and a white Lexus LX450 were left warming up in the driveway, using the push-start ignition. The suspects were able to enter the vehicles and drive away, despite not having the keys, police said. Three men face charges of theft of a motor vehicle, obstruction of a peace officer and possession of property obtained by crime. Police remind drivers to never leave their vehicle unattended.

In the March 3 edition of The Economist & Sun the story ‘Traffic signal not welcome in Box Grove?’ stated that construction on widening Steeles Avenue is scheduled to start in 2017. While pre-construction activities are underway, construction has not been scheduled. The next opportunity for the region to include this project in the 10-year capital plan is as part of the 2017 budget process. The Economist & Sun regrets the error.

Get out and enjoy maple syrup fest Four-year-old Watson is learning syrup doesn’t come from a bottle. The little boy was at Woodbridge’s Kortright Centre for Conservation last weekend with his mom, Camilla Wong, dad Ivan Yuen, and seven-year-old sister Abigail for the Sugarbush Maple Syrup Festival. The annual event, which runs from March 5 to April 3, is also being held at Stouffville’s Bruce’s Mill Conservation Area and two other conservation areas in the Greater Toronto Area. “We’re learning how maple syrup is made. We’re learning where the maple syrup we put on our pancakes is from. That’s the main thing. It doesn’t just come out of a glass jar,” Wong said. “We actually come every year. Most of the time, we’ve gone to Bruce’s Mill but we thought this time, we would try our the Kortright Centre.” Heather Coghill, 12, was at Kortright with her dad, Jamie Coghill, her eight-year-old sister, Breann and Breann’s Brownie group. She was excited to see the maple syrup demonstrations and take part in the other activities going on. “It’s really cool, the tapping of the trees and I like maple syrup,” she said. Her dad remembered similar outings when he was boy. “I did this with my grandmother up in Sauble Beach. We went on the reserve and did the

maple syrup and it was fantastic,” he said. “The opportunity to take my kids is something that’s really cool.” There is plenty going on during the festival for everyone, although some activities are only taking place on weekends and holidays, Kortright manager Adrian O’Driscoll said. “It’s a wonderful way to welcome the spring. We have horse-drawn wagon rides. Of course, maple syrup demonstrations. We have First Nations demonstrations, we have pioneer demonstrations and modern methods of maple syrup production,” he said. “We have, new this year, a straw bale maze for the kids. We have birds of prey, our raptor demonstrations. We have strolling and wandering magicians and strolling entertainers, face painting. New this year, we have life-size games, so we have Jenga and Connect Four and other life-size games.” Visitors learn how First Nations people from long ago used rocks heated in a fire to evaporate sap into maple syrup. They also discover how European settlers introduced large cast iron kettles in which they boiled sap over a fire. There is also a sugar shack with an evaporator to teach modern methods of producing syrup. This winter’s mild temperatures shouldn’t affect sap flow, O’Driscoll said. The annual festival draws both people who make visiting an annual tradition and others, particularly newcomers to Canada, who come out for the first time to discover how syrup is made, O’Driscoll said.

City sticks with provincial ombudsman

Tree PlanTing?

By Amanda Persico

apersico@yrmg.com

FUNDING SUPPORT IS AVAILABLE

If you are planting trees on your property, you may be eligible for funding assistance. Planting trees on your property helps fight climate change and increases wildlife habitat and water conservation.

When faced with a decision between a made in Markham approach and the status quo, Markham council opted to go with the status quo – the province’s complaint system. “There is no right or wrong,” said the city clerk Kimberly Kitteringham. “The end result is greater accountability.” Recently, the Ontario ombudsman office opened the floodgates for public complaints. The provincial ombudsman can now investigate complaints made about any municipality in the province – all 444 of them – as well as complaints made about the province’s 28 school boards and 21 universities. While the Ombudsman can investigate local council, local affiliated boards and municipally controlled corporations, it cannot overturn an existing decision. The new laws also allow municipalities to create a local ombudsman office. The provincial complaint system was intended to be the last resort after all local complaint protocols are exhausted. Markham’s complaint protocols include an auditor general to ensure stewardship over public funds, a closed meeting investigator who investigates open council meeting compliance and an integrity commissioner to investigate code of conduct complaints. Since other positions, such as the integrity commission and the auditor general, were created in Markham, it makes sense to have a Markham ombudsman office, Mayor Frank

Scarpitti said. But this is one instance where a “madein-Markham approach doesn’t work”, said Regional Councillor Jim Jones. “There needs to be continuity and consistency across the province,” he said. “This isn’t the way to do it. It can’t be all over the place.” According to city staff, using a local ombudsman would have more local context, knowledge of municipal procedures and could likely provide quicker responses. One option was to piggyback with region’s ombudsman contractor, ADR Chambers Inc., which is also the firm behind Markham’s integrity commissioner. The region would pay the retainer fee, but the city would be responsible for unknown costs associated with an investigation, which hover in the $250 per hour range. “As a lawyer, $250 an hour can really add up,” said Regional Councillor Nirmala Armstrong. Councillor Karen Rea agreed, citing her experience with the city’s closed meeting investigator regarding in-camera meetings about the proposed GTA Centre arena. Rea pushed for the city to continue using the provincial ombudsman office, which is free. “The provincial ombudsmen is more transparent,” Rea said. “When the in-camera report came out, it was brushed under the carpet. If someone complains to the Markham ombudsman and they don’t like the result, they can complain to the provincial ombudsman.”

Steeles Avenue East Bridge Environmental Assessment Notice of Commencement & Public Event Study Overview

The City ofToronto has initiated a study to evaluate options for a grade separation between Steeles Avenue East and the Stouffville GOTransit Rail Corridor (east of Kennedy Road). Currently the level crossing of the railway tracks restricts the movement of pedestrians, cyclists, transit and vehicles. A grade separation would provide a bridge (road over rail or road under rail) to eliminate vehicle and train conflicts and help improve traffic flow, safety, and area connections for all users. The study will also consider: • •

Widening of Steeles Avenue East from Kennedy Road to Midland Avenue Accommodating pedestrian, cycling and multi-use facilities

Markham’s Huawei at forefront of 5G By Amanda Persico

apersico@yrmg.com

The provincial government is helping create some 250 new research and development jobs with one of the top telecommunications companies in the province. The provincial government announced in Markham this week, it’s investing about

$16 million through its Jobs and Prosperity Fund to help Huawei Technologies’ research and development expansion project that’s expected to add an additional 250 highly technical jobs. The province is also investing in Huawei’s 5G Ontario project, which will focus on advanced communications initiatives such

as faster Internet speeds, cloud computing, data analytics and mobile security. Huawei is also investing about $212 million into the project. “This is the faster Internet of the future,” said Premier Kathleen Wynne. The company’s 5G plan includes research on how to send and receive data faster and how to store and process all that new data through increased computing and storage capacities. Huawei will also focus on how this technology will be applied and how to maintain the integrity of that information. While the majority of the 250 jobs will be based out of the company’s research and development centres in Ottawa and Waterloo, cloud computing research will be done at the Markham facility. “The work being done in Ontario is leading edge stuff,” said Huawei corporate affairs vice-president Scott Bradley. “This is pushing-the-envelope research.” Industry leaders are looking at 2020 as the benchmark for 5G technologies. The impact of that technology remains unclear. But Bradley hopes it leads to the use of more automated cars, for instance. The use of 5G technologies could be seen as the next industrial revolution, he added. “Look at the two industrial revolutions over the last century, cars and computers,” he said. “5G enables these two to come together. We’re on the edge of something cool. 5G enables all the things talked about

and envisioned over the last 30, 40, 50 years, except for teleporting.” The investment, along with the plan to partner with several provincial universities, will help Huawei become 5G research and development hub. “Every industry, whether it be banking, government or healthcare, will have to adopt to this technology,” Bradley said. “You’re getting these really smart people coming out. They may not come work for Huawei; they might want to go work for RBC. But in 5G. That’s the real cool, long-term value.” The agreement builds upon the Premier’s first trade mission to China in 2014, when Huawei announced a $210-million Ontario expansion project and created 250 highly skilled jobs. “Even in times of global and national uncertainty, we will build on our strengths and partner with businesses when strategically wise to do so,” she said. “That is how we build jobs.” The province’s Jobs and Prosperity Fund is investing about $2.7 billion over the next 10 years to help bolster innovation that will help to create and retain more than 16,00 jobs and attract more than $1 billion in investments. The premier’s trade missions to China last fall and the recent missions to India earlier this year are expected to created more than 1,800 jobs through more than 100 agreements and MOUs totally about $2.8 billion.

Kindred Spirits Orchestra presents From Darkness to Light Kindred Spirits Orchestra presents From Darkness to Light, the fourth concert of their subscription series, at Flato Markham Theatre on Friday, March 25 at 8 p.m. Patrons can expect a display of artistic ingenuity, virtuosity, and bravura from the orchestra, led by Maestro Kristian Alexander. A feast for the ears will be served up with a Night on Bald Mountain as aperitif, followed by a hearty helping of Nielsen, a main course by Mahler, capped off with a complimentary glass of La Scala champagne after the concert. After refreshments and a question-and-answer session with Gray and Alexa Petrenko of Classical 96.3 FM, Gustav Mahler’s 4th Symphony is sure to inspire. A light, classical first movement is contrasted by a dance macabre in the second — where a solo violin is tuned a tone up to depict death playing a fiddle. The fourth movement showcases a child’s naive vision of heaven — with feasts, angels and saints — sung by 12-year old descant Alastair Thorburn-Vitols. York Region’s transit master plan envisions a future 25 years from now where transit will be the faster option. Several key roads in Markham will have been widened to six lanes to accommodate buses, the subway will extend up Yonge Street into Richmond Hill and there will be more frequent trains and buses to better serve riders, Markham councillors were told last week as the region’s transportation master plan was presented at the city’s development services committee. The new master plan represents a shift in focus on regional roads, from moving the most vehicles to moving the most people, said the region’s transportation services director, Stephen Collins. A lot has changed on our roadways since the last transportation master plan in 2009: construction on the Toronto-York Spadina subway extension and opening Viva rapidways along Hwy. 7 and Davis Drive. Transit travel times have decreased by about 35 per cent along Hwy. 7 between Bayview Avenue and Hwy 404. Meanwhile, Viva/YRT ridership has increased by about 20 per cent. Yet despite new infrastructure and an expanding road network, car commute times will continue to increase, Collins said. According to the region, driving from Markham to downtown Toronto takes about 50 minutes during morning rush hour. By 2041, that will increase to more than

an hour. Transit times, on the other hand, will decrease from 50 to about 40 minutes in 2041. The same trend can be seen with trips going east/west across the region. It takes about 30 minutes to get from Markham Centre to Vaughan Metropolitan Centre. That commute is expected to increase to more than 40 minutes by 2041. Transit commute times are also expected to decrease within the region by 2041. “The No. 1 complaint now is that transit cannot compete with cars,” Collins said. “Transit travel time is becoming more competitive with auto travel time.” The Yonge Street subway extension remains a transit priority for the region, he added. The master plan projects a subway extension into the Langstaff corridor, Collins said. The region is also lobbying to extend 15-minute, all-day GO train service up to Major Mackenzie Drive along the Stouffville GO rail line. But connecting the different modes of transit – Viva/YRT, GO Train and TTC – is missing from the region’s plan, said regional councillor Jim Jones, a longtime advocate for transit innovation in the GTA. The existing – and any new – bus or rapid transit networks should connect to other transit options, he said this week. “We have to use the network we have,” Jones said. “Use the bus network to feed the train network. Connectivity means

ON NOW AT THE BRICK!

mobility.” That includes an integrated fare system as well as bringing bus or rapid transit into the train stations. Jones argued there should be more bus connections to the Barrie and Stouffville GO lines. “We have to figure out how to service the base (need) and handle the peak (demand),” Jones said. “Right now, it’s about servicing the peak without knowing how to handle the base first.” Several steps and major infrastructure upgrades are required to make transit the faster option, Collins said. The region is also planning to extend rapid transit lanes along Hwy. 7 to the Cornell area. Other transit improvements include ramping up to 15-minute service to major regional corridors, creating rural bus con-

nections and establishing commuter parking lots. The region’s master plan includes future plans to widen sections of Kennedy and McCowan roads and Warden Avenue from four to six lanes with provisions for future transit lanes. Also, the region plans to widen 16th Avenue between Yonge Street and McCowan Road and Major Mackenzie Drive between Hwy. 404 and Donald Cousens Parkway from four to six lanes with provisions for future transit lanes. Some concerns expressed by Markham councillors include regional road widths, adding a physical separation between cyclists and motorists and the design of regional roads that pass through heritage districts. The region’s transportation master plan is scheduled to be complete by the end of the year.

Andrew Wells has had a satisfying indoor weight throwing season as a graduate student at the University of Pittsburgh. After capturing the Atlantic Coast Conference weight throwing title last month in Boston, the 24-yearold Unionville resident was named the Mid-Atlantic Region Field Athlete of the Year by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, Friday. Entering the season with only indoor eligibility, Wells established several records this season. Part of which saw him break his own school record on three separate occasions. His current record at the University of Pittsburgh of 21.92 metres came on his final throw at the ACC Championship Meet, which enabled him to clinch the title. Entering next week’s National Collegiate Athletic Association National Championship Meet, Wells is currently ranked seventh. Alonzo Webb, University of Pittsburgh head track and field coach, felt the award given to Wells was well deserving. “I was very happy for Andrew when I learned he was chosen as the USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Region Field Athlete of the Year and this couldn’t have happened to a better person,” he said in a school press release. “Andrew is a hard-working, competitive, humble and appreciative young man. “When I congratulated him on the award I was greeted with disbelief. Even after breaking his school record three times, winning the ACC title and qualifying for the NCAA Championship Meet, he still couldn’t believe he was worthy, and that’s just the kind of young man he is.” A Unionville High School graduate and brother of Canadian Olympic 400m hurdler Sarah Wells, Andrew came to the University of Pittsburgh after doing his undergraduate work at Texas A&M Kingsville. Wells is working towards a bachelor in business administration.

Pivotal Game 5 returns to Markham

THE COMPETITION IS IN SUPER TROUBLE NOW

When the Markham Royals and Whitby Fury took to the Markham Centennial Arena ice for the third game of their Ontario Junior Hockey League North-East Conference first round best-of-seven series Tuesday, both felt that scoring first was key. In the first two games played last weekend, the team that scored first won. With Markham and Whitby each winning one game, that trend continued to hold form as Sean Perichak opened the scoring with his first ever postseason marker and later added another goal on the night as the Royals cruised to a 5-1 win to take a two games to one lead in the series. “Scoring the first goal of a game is huge and to capitalize on,” said an elated Perichak, who began the season playing for the Milton Icehawks before being dealt to Markham early in the year. “We know that during this series the team that has scored first in the first two games has won and we wanted to do it today.” After Perichak opened the scoring just over six minutes into the game, the Royals added to their lead with a goal from defenceman Joel Knight to take a 2-0 advantage late in the period. A pivotal moment in the game came when Royals’ Jeff Joynt was serving a high sticking minor with just under three minutes remaining before the first intermission. Enjoying the man advantage, Whitby thought they scored on the power play off a goalmouth scramble. But the Royals caught a big break when the referees ruled the puck was directed into the net with a glove and the goal was disallowed. Maintaining their 2-0 lead entering the second period, the Royals accounted for the lone goal in the middle frame when their leading regular season scorer Tyson Bruce notched his second of the postseason just over two minutes in. After Perichak notched his second goal early in the third, Whitby got their lone tally just before the midway mark from Kennedy Duguid to cut their deficit to 4-1. With time winding down, Whitby pulled goalkeeper Daniel Mannella. But with 58 seconds remaining in regulation time, the Royals iced the game with an empty net goal from Jeff Joynt.

When the Hamilton Red Wings moved their Ontario Junior Hockey League club to Markham for the start of the 2015-16 season, one of the first people they asked to assist their operations was Jodi Lanzarotta. It proved a wise move. With more than 20 years at various levels of hockey, Lanzarotta was honoured by the league as this year’s Volunteer of the Year. Despite battling some health issues this season, Lanzarotta has been involved with the club in a variety of capacities. Along with billeting four Royals players, she was the driving force behind the creation of the club’s lion mascot Reggie, who also appears at many special events in Markham. Lanzarotta played a huge role in Armed Forces Night, offering free admission to officers and uniformed cadets, and the club’s annual Pink-in-the-Rink Night in support of Breast Cancer.

Reflecting on his two-goal performance, Perichak said it was a night he won’t soon forget. “It’s the first time that I’ve scored two goals in a playoff game as I hadn’t been to the playoffs prior to this season. “To get two (goals) tonight was special. It was awesome and we had a good game.” While pleased with the work of the Perichak, Bruce and Marco Azzano line on the night, which was on the ice for four of their goals, Royals general manager and head coach Mike Galati Galati was quick to credit the victory as a total team effort. “Our overall play was good. We were good at both ends of the ice,” he said. “It was a 60-minute effort and I thought we played a lot more disciplined.” The next game in the series is scheduled to be played at Whitby’s Iroquois Park Arena today at 7:40 p.m. While every game in the playoffs is significant, Galati was quick to note the fourth game can be a pivotal one. “It’s a big one. We can take a huge step forward with a win or we can let them (Whitby) back in it,” he cited. The fifth game of the series returns to Markham Centennial Arena Friday at 7:30 p.m.

A celebration of her life, and her brother Bob O’Vell will take place at the RCL Branch No. 68, Penetanguishene on Saturday, March 26th from 1-4 p.m. Interment: Pine Hills Cemetery, Toronto, Ontario. Letters of condolences: McKee Family, 951 Roslyn Court, Midland ON L4R 5A1 WHYNOTT, Fraser Hurley - 93, Markham, Ontario, February 24th 2016 With deep sorrow in their hearts Fraser’s family regret the passing of a loving and devoted father, grandfather and greatgrandfather at Sunnybrook Veterans Residence, Toronto. Born March 16th, 1922, in Queen’s County Nova Scotia, Fraser was the son of the late Arthur and Cecilia (Jones) Whynott. Fraser joined the RCAF during WWII serving at Coal Harbour Air Base, British Columbia as a Leading Aircraftsman working on coastal surveillance Catalina flying boat aircraft. After the war, Fraser joined some of his relatives as a woodsmen and official guide for fishing and hunting parties in Nova Scotia throughout the 1940’s and ‘50s. He also participated in Sportsman Shows held throughout Canada and the U.S. Acts consisted of heated contests in wood-chopping, log rolling and canoe tilting. Moving his family to Ontario in 1951, Fraser worked as a carpenter at such places as Mt. Hope Airport (Hamilton), Van Bots Construction and on the CN Tower. During Fraser’s “retirement”, he enjoyed flying his own airplane from the Markham Airport where he spent much of his time hanging out with his “flying buddies” at the flying club. Pre-deceased by his wife of 69 years, Beatrice (2013), Fraser is survived by his children Edward (Joanne), Enid Abram, Warren (Leigh), Denise Smith (Gregory); grandchildren, Michael, Richard, Matthew, Kyle, Sean, April, Emily; greatgrandchildren, Josh, Kate, Christopher Jr., Mason, Taylor, Molly, Nash, Reid & James. Fraser is survived by sisters Georgina & Ruth of Bridgewater, N.S. Fraser’s ashes will be interred at a later time in the family plot in the Harmony Cemetery, Caledonia Nova Scotia. “You will always be in our hearts and the love you gave to others will live on forever”.
