Firefighters from across York appeared on TV Sunday as part of MasterChef Canada when the cooks came to Unionville and served 121 hungry heroes baby back ribs.

Firefighters honoured on MasterChef Canada By Amanda Persico

M

apersico@yrmg.com

ain Street Unionville had its 15 minutes of fame last fall when the historical and picturesque street was closed off and transformed into an open-air kitchen. Calling the business hub part of “rural Ontario”, the show selected Unionville as its location for chefs from MasterChef Canada to compete in this season’s first team challenge. And 121 firefighters from across York Region were treated to a tasty feast of barbecued baby back ribs. “I didn’t eat today,” said Markham firefighter Jeremy Acton, who, along with 120 others, was

waiting out of sight near the Stiver Mill. “I came hungry.” During the ‘Trial by Fire’ episode of this season’s show, which aired Sunday, the home cooks were put to the test in a 90-minute rib-off in the middle of the street. Aside from creating mouthwatering ribs, the teams were also charged with creating two signature side dishes for the tribute barbecue lunch. Seven-foot tables all joined together and decked in crisp white linen and blue and red plates lined the centre of Unionville’s Main Street, with enough seating for 121 of the region’s “heroes”. While the firefighters were secluded from the cooking action,

that didn’t stop them from salivating as plumes of barbecue goodness wafted through the air. They may have the uniform in common, but what makes for finger-licking barbecue all comes down to personal taste. “It’s every man for himself,” Acton said. “For me, bring on the heat and the mess. There’s nothing wrong with messy.” While Acton’s approach was to reserve his vote for the plate that blew his mind away, others had a more methodical approach. For Joe McDonald, an East Gwillimbury firefighter, judging the best ribs was a complex formula that started with smell. “First, you smell the ribs,” he said. “You should be able to smell

the seasonings; smell the barbecue flavour.” After smell, it’s a matter of taste and aftertaste. Second only to taste is the texture — having a high fall-offthe-bone factor was key. “The meat has to melt off the bone,” said Paul Taylor with Vaughan Fire and Rescue Services. “If not, it’s too fatty. There’s nothing worse than bad ribs where you have to chew like crazy. Ribs have to be meaty, not fatty.” MasterChef Canada judge Michael Bonacini could not agree more. “You know it’s bad when it sticks between your teeth and you need dental floss,” he said

during the Unionville taping. “Dry ribs are the worst.” The trick is to cook ribs low and slow, he added. Even before taste factors into the judging, looks play a big part, added chef and judge Alvin Leung. “Before you taste it, just look at it,” he said. “It should look plump and juicy, not dry like cardboard.” A good barbecued rib combines a great rub, flavourful and sticky sauce and a zap of heat, said chef and judge Claudio Aprile. Don’t forget to add a whole lot of time and patience, he added. “When that all culminates together, it’s a work of magic,” he said.

Hitherto, it’s been me telling you all the virtues of our ham, but I now have independent corroboration of my story. At the recent Ontario Independent Meat Processors Convention, our MAPLE SUGAR HAM won the GOLD AWARD in the ham-making competition. It’s not that we’re so smart, or even innovative, it’s just our stubborn adherence to the idea of not cutting corners and taking shortcuts in the process of making our hams (or anything else we do for that matter). For Easter, ham is the meal of choice, and we offer three types: First, we make a great TRADITIONAL EASTER HAM. With the bone in, it’s available either whole or half, and it’s slow cooked over oak. Next is a BLACK FOREST HAM. This is boneless, slow-smoked over oak and fully cooked, ready to go. Third, we have our MAPLE SUGAR HAM. These are boneless and slow-roasted with Maple and Brown Sugar until they are fully cooked. What is different about our hams is they are not ‘extended’ like commercially-made hams are. When you read the label on a supermarket ham and see those words ‘protein added’, know that it’s not a good thing at all. What it means is that not all you are paying for, and eating, is actually ham, and what ham you do get is of a texture far different than what ham used to be like, and ours still is. It takes us longer to make these, and they shrink during the process rather than grow, but what you get is the genuine old-fashioned article. It’s best to order early!

When it comes to making tasty food, simplicity is king. As much as I love exotic cuisines and eating out at fancy restaurants, I could just as easily opt for a perfectly grilled cheese burger in most cases. LETTER TO THE EDITOR

COLUMN

What’s on the menu, meals or sexy attire?

‘E

xcellent customer service doesn’t have a cup size.” So said the executive director of the Human Rights Legal Support Centre last week on International Women’s Day, and I couldn’t agree more. The Ontario Human Rights Commission is calling for an end to sexualized dress codes that discriminate against female employees. The commission is taking on some restaurants and bars that require their female staff to dress in high heels, tight dresses, lowcut tops and short skirts. The commission maintains that this dress code requirement may make employees more vulnerable to sexual harassment, contribute to discriminatory work environments and exclude people based on sex, gender identity or expression and creed. Most of us have eaten at such restaurants where the female staff, often waitresses or hostesses, can be dressed in such a provocative way it can make female customers embarrassed and male customers uncomfortable, too. I’ve eaten meals at chain restaurants in both Richmond Hill and Newmarket where either my husband or my daughter’s boyfriend were ill at ease due to the cleavage and very short skirts on display. Many times I’ve shared a meal at such establishments with female friends and it became a topic of hushed conversation, not wanting to upset servers. I don’t think such hushed discussion bodes well for a restaurant, if customers talk about the way a server is dressed instead of how delicious the food is. My son also worked in the kitchen of one such establishment that required female staff to dress provocatively. Not only was he sometimes distracted in his work, but he felt uncomfortable when encountering the waitresses in staff hallways — and even sorry for them.

MAR KHAM

Marney Beck After all, he has a sister, and would probably be embarrassed if she had obtained a job in the same restaurant and been forced to dress in a revealing way. And as a parent, I would be more than uncomfortable if my daughter were forced to wear sexy clothes to work; I would be furious. “Employers must make sure their dress codes don’t reinforce sexist stereotypes,” said Chief Commissioner Renu Mandhane of the Ontario Human Rights Commission. “They send the message that an employee’s worth is tied to how they look. That’s not right, and it could violate the Ontario Human Rights Code.” Last week, the commission publicized its plea to workers that if they felt their workplace’s dress code or uniform discriminated against them, they should use their company’s internal complaints process, or file a formal human rights tribunal complaint. (online go to sjto.gov.on.ca/hrto/ contact/) If there are any waitresses or restaurant staff who would like to express their opinions on wearing sexualized clothing — our reporters would like to hear from them. Or from managers explaining why their dress code is important to the image they are trying to project to customers. It’s fair game to ask restaurant staff to wear green on St. Patrick’s Day or a special T-shirt to promote a company awareness or charitable campaign, but quite another to insist on a uniform that exposes staff as sex objects.

Why are gas prices higher in Markham? I’m wondering if Markham residents realize how much we are being ripped off by our local gas stations, as compared to gas stations outside of Markham? Just a bit north of us in Ballantrae, or east of us toward Port Perry, gas is often as much as 8 cents/ litre cheaper. Just south of us in Scarborough, gas is also usually cheaper. So why are residents of Markham being penalized? Companies that are making huge profits are targeting areas to rip off, and there’s something terribly wrong about that.

You have to be living under a rock not to hear the news with those three Neville-Lake children and their grandfather killed by yet another drunk driver as the court proceedings are going on. What is it going to take for people to stop this absolute nonsense? Honestly. Take a cab — for what it will cost, even at $200 at a maximum — is that not worth it? I still don’t think a day has gone by in the past 26 years where I haven’t thought of my friend. He never got married, never had a family of his own. There is so much more he never got to do. I won’t even mention the fallout for his family after the drunk driver got off on a technicality. My heart still breaks and always will.

Donna Marrin

MARKHAM

Aurora

Don’t drink and drive What’s up, drivers? Twenty-six years ago, in King City, I lost a very good friend because of a drunk driver. I read in the news recently that York Regional Police arrested 10 drunk drivers in one weekend alone.

I don’t think we’re alone when I say, what’s happening with Markham drivers? When did it become legal to turn left, on a solid red light (have seen it twice in less than two weeks). Or just

proceed through a stop sign, perhaps slowing up, or just go through (why stop?). A couple of years ago our son was hit by a person going through a stop sign, while on a cell phone. And just this past week (March 3) while our daughter, a server at a restaurant near Hwy. 7 and Woodbine, was working, somebody backed into her car, smashed up the front end and drove off. Our daughter works two jobs. Her future husband is paying his way through school, while doing an apprenticeship. They are getting married this summer. Because of this person’s carelessness and lack of a conscience, she now has to pay for your total disregard for her personal property. I truly hope whoever hit her is driving a BMW or Mercedes or some high-end car and gets gouged when getting their vehicle fixed. There are a lot of drivers in Markham who should study and study again the driver’s handbook.

Houghton name will provide welcome at hospital BY AMANDA PERSICO

apersico@yrmg.com

Future generations will remember Sylvia Houghton’s name. Not only is her name synonymous with the local real estate community — having been a realtor in the area for more than three decades — but it will also be heralded as the name of Markham Stouffville Hospital’s information centre. Recently, Houghton —

together with her husband, Bruce — donated $1 million to the hospital foundation. “Sylvia Houghton has always supported our hospital when we’ve needed it most,” hospital foundation CEO Suzette Strong said. “They are helping ensure that MSH makes good on its promise of continued excellent, patient-centered care for everyone who walks through its doors, today and well into the future.”

Houghton — a farmer’s daughter from Manitoba — worked as a school teacher for more than a decade in Nova Scotia. From there, the family moved to Montreal, then settled in Markham in the early 1970s, when building a local hospital was still a pipe dream. She watched as the initial hospital was being built, opening in 1990, followed by the more recent expansion. “I watched the hospital

become bigger and better,” she said. “It’s become one of the best known hospitals in the area.” And Markham Stouffville Hospital is where all six of her grandchildren were born, she added.

‘always supported’ “I was impressed,” she said of the hospital. “Everybody needs money. Markham Stouffville came to mind. Markham Stouffville was my choice.” The $1-million donation will be recognized with a sign at the hospital’s information centre, the first point of contact for patients and visitors to the hospital. “My name will be there forever,” Houghton said with evident pride. Through her career, she has earned numerous industry awards, including the Luminary of Distinction certificate, Hall of Fame statues, Lifetime Achievement and the Circle of Legends. Throughout Sylvia’s long career in Markham real estate, she has touched so many lives of so many families,” said Allan Bell, a longtime friend and hospital foundation community relations and corporate partnerships director. “This generous gift will continue to impact the patients and their families of generations to come.” The information centre, staffed by hospital volunteers, provides a variety of information and services and is often the first place patients and visitors turn to for help when they arrive at the hospital. “They really embody what makes this community so special,” said hospital president and CEO Jo-anne Marr of the Houghtons. “Their gift will be a wonderful legacy, reminding everyone who comes through the hospital doors of their true generosity and community spirit.”

If you build it, will they come? Taking a look at the York Region Transportation Master Plan (TMP) stretching out to 2041, that seems to be the idea. By then, York Region will have about 1.8 million people, up from about 1.1 million today; the number of jobs in the region will have jumped from 565,000 to approximately 900,000 according to projections. The big question, according to the TMP, is if York will see a big increase in the number of people who use public transit. Currently, just four per cent of trips within York Region are made using public transit. Contrast that number with these numbers: 81 per cent of a.m. peak work trips are made by car; 96 per cent of trips of less than five kilometres are made by car. So, how do you get more people out of their cars and on to buses helping to free up some of the gridlock on York Region roads? The key way, according to the TMP, is to build a world-class transit system. We’re seeing some of that work happening right now with the development of the Viva Rapidway system along Hwy. 7 in south York Region as well as along Steeles Avenue, up Yonge Street, along Major Mackenzie Drive, and across Davis Drive in Newmarket. It won’t be finished for a number of years but when

Tim Kelly done could have a major impact on how many choose to ride the bus. Such a system creates a “buses-only” lane that keeps transit moving smoothly and, as the population increases, will move people swiftly through the most congested corridors. If users can be guaranteed good service, the idea is that more will take it, thus freeing up more lanes on the road and reducing traffic gridlock. The hope is that, in addition to the Vaughan subway link coming online in 2017, there will also be a subway link to Richmond Hill by 2041. Combine that with all-day, two-way, 15-minute GO Train service planned along lines running through the region over the next decade and transit service should dramatically improve. Will all the improvements draw people out of their cars? As the region grows and transit improves, taking the bus or train may prove a more attractive option down the road for some. Thornhill synagogue closing doors after 45 years By Simone Joseph

sjoseph@yrmg.com

It’s the end of an era. Thornhill’s Shaar Shalom Synagogue is closing its doors on June 30. The synagogue is “winding down its current operations” and plans to sell its real estate, according to a March question-andanswer statement to members.

“Reversing our current situation would require extreme efforts,” the Q & A states. “If any of our members can present us with a well-thought-out proposal as to how the shul can continue, we will consider it.” Shaar Shalom Synagogue has a near 45-year history serving the Thornhill and North York Jewish communities. and the synagogue caused him to seek a congregation in the U.S. He announced in January that he would be leaving. In February, Cantor Ben Silverberg announced his departure. Silverberg, who has been the cantor of Shaar Shalom since 2001, has accepted a job at Beth Torah Congregation in Toronto, starting July 1. Since the synagogue still owes $545,000 on its mortgage, has declining membership and bleak prospects, compounded by the loss of clergy, the executive and board decided to close the institution. “Keeping the doors open and lights on after June 30 means incremental and ongoing costs we cannot afford,” the Q & A states.

The synagogue was started in a house basement by several families living in the Don Mills Road and Steeles Avenue area. A March 9 meeting included a discussion of the loss of the synagogue’s clergy and the potential dramatic loss of membership. At the meeting, synagogue officials described the events that led to the announcement, according to an article in The Canadian Jewish News. More than 200 members gathered to hear the announcement, which was met with shock, tears and some anger, synagogue president Seymour Hersh told The CJN. Several factors influenced the decision to close. One was the loss of clergy. Neither Rabbi Steven Schwarzman nor Cantor Ben Silverberg will be renewing their contracts. Their contracts, as well as the executive director’s contract, ended this year. Rabbi Schwarzman, who is native to the U.S., has been with Shaar Shalom for two years. The statement issued by the synagogue noted that the falling Canadian dollar, family settlement complications and “ideological differences” between Schwarzman

Markham-Unionville MP Bob Saroya, Official Opposition Deputy Critic for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, issued a statement last week criticizing the Liberal government’s plan to slash key streams of economic immigration. “On March 8 after much delay, the Liberal government tabled their Immigration Levels Plan for 2016, which included major cuts to economic immigration streams and the Caregiver Program,” the MP stated. “At no time did the Liberal government indicate to Canadians that their immigration plan would include massive cuts to immigration streams that are vital to our economic growth.” The 2016 Immigration Levels Plan will cut

24,300 spots to the overall Economic Immigration stream, including 15,000 spots to the Federal Skilled Workers Program, 8,000 cuts to the Caregiver Immigration class and 800 cuts to the Business Class Stream[1]. He said he was disappointed that making drastic cuts to economic immigration is a priority of this government. “These cuts won’t just hurt our financial outlook, they will negatively impact our ability to provide new Canadians with the resources they need to successfully transition to life in Canada. Furthermore, with a roughly 250 per cent increase in humanitarian immigration streams, Syrian refugees are still without access to language training and permanent housing. At a time when the government needs to be introducing prudent fiscal measures, cuts to the economic immigration stream will only further perpetuate these issues.”

Young actors go Backstage in new TV show By Amanda Persico

apersico@yrmg.com

Two Markham teens are going back to relive their high school years. Only this time, Aviva Mongillo, 18, and Julia Tomasone, 17, will

relive the dramas of high school at the Keaton School of the Arts – the stage for Family Channel’s newest TV show, Backstage. Backstage premiers Friday, March 18 at 7 p.m. and features an entirely Canadian cast of up-and-

coming talent. “It’s like hindsight,” Mongillo said of her theatrical return to high school in Backstage. “I get to go back in time and do it again. I get to go back to Grade 9 without having to actually go back.”

Mongillo plays Alya, a selftaught singer/songwriter, who has never been to the big city – a fish out of water. Mongillo was enrolled in acting lessons when she was 7, followed by vocal and guitar lessons a few years later. “I was able to draw inspiration from what I already knew,” she said. Tomasone plays Bianca, Ayla’s opposite. Bianca is good at everything and is determined to make it big.

“Everyone has a Bianca in their life” Tomasone initially auditioned for the role of Alya, but was cast for the other role. “Bianca is such a stark contrast from me,” Tomasone said. “She’s uber confident. But we’re similar in that we are passionate and dedicated to our art.” Bianca has a little bit of an edge and comes off as entitled, she added. “Everyone has a Bianca in their life,” Tomasone said. “There’s a lot more to her character.” Tomasone starred in her first commercial at an early age. From there the Markham teen starred in several community theatre productions, including Romeo and Juliet and Grease. She also had roles in other Family Channel TV shows, such as Project X Series and Life with Derek and Conner Undercover. At Keaton School of the Arts, the hallways come alive with musical mashups and dramatic dance-offs. The show follows a group of talented teenagers as they navigate through the disappointments and achievements that are associated with the high school years. The teens deal with the realities of being a student at a prestigious arts school, something these Markham teens can relate to.

AVIVA MONGILLO: Local actor, 18, part of Family Channel’s new show Backstage.

JULIA TOMASONE: Markham actor, 17, plays role that hits close to home. At one point, both Mongillo and Tomasone attended Unionville High School. Mongillo is still studying there and Tomasone transferred to St. Brother Andre. While their characters often find themselves on different sides, in reality, the two are close friends with a lot in common, Mongillo said. The teens also lived in the same neighbourhood and their parents went to high school together.

Markham actor in movie on YTV A young Markham actor has a role in a movie making its premiere on YTV next month. Actor Benny Feng is part of a cast hoping to bring laughs this April Fool’s Day, as YTV brings the dynamic duo from Macdonald Hall boys’ school to fans across the country in Bruno & Boots: Go Jump in the Pool! The original movie based on the much-loved Macdonald Hall book series by best-selling young adult author Gordon Korman, premieres Friday, April 1 at 7:30 p.m. Produced by Aircraft Pictures in association with YTV, the original movie follows Bruno Walton, played by Jonny Gray (Max & Shred, Annedroids) and Melvin “Boots” O’Neal, played by Callan Potter (Stratford Festival), the most infamous troublemakers at Macdonald Hall — a supposedly prestigious school for boys. “The chemistry between the young cast members is truly incredible,” said Jamie Piekarz, director of content, Corus Kids.

After 7 years of working with Mayfair, my family is still very proud and loyal customers. Their employees have helped us every step of the way, starting from breaking ground on construction all the way to maintaining a chemically balance healthy pool. They consistently answer all our questions, and keep their customers informed on the current pool technology via their “pool uptake” classes. We couldn’t be happier with any other choice, happy 40th anniversary Mayfair!

Three members of the Markham Skating Club are off to the 2016 Skate Ontario Championships in Sudbury this weekend. Mikayla Eagleson, 12, will be competing in the Juvenile U14 category while Emily Ng, 11, will vie for honours in the Pre Juvenile U13 division and Jasmin Hew, 10, Pre Juvenile U11 division. All three skaters have also been selected for Skate Canada Central Ontario’s Future Champions team. Coaching the trio and serving as a Skate Canada coach, Rodolfo Guilherme was quick to credit the success of the club’s program and his skaters in qualifying. “Making the team is a huge accomplishment in itself because we’re in one of the toughest regions in the entire country,” he said. All three skaters will perform at the Markham Skating Club’s Ice Show Up, Up and Away from April 8 to 10. The show will also feature 2016 Canadian Senior Pairs Bronze Medalists Lubov Ilyushechkina and Dylan Moscovitch, who will be returning from the 2016 ISU World

SPORTS Figure Skating Championship competition in Boston the week before the show. Also performing will be more than 200 of the club’s finest - from their youngest pre-CanSkate to their Gold and Competitive Skaters and award winning adult skaters. Bill Crothers hoopster to go to Lakehead Nahshon Hurst, a sixfoot, two-inch guard who attends Bill Crothers Secondary School, recently announced his intentions to enrol at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay. Intending to study psychology, Hurst said of his decision to enrol at Lakehead: “It is the perfect school for me to focus on becoming the best individual, student and basketball player I can be,” he said in a school news release. “Nahshon’s athleticism,

length, and competitive drive will definitely help our team going forward,” head coach Manny Furtado said.

Basketball coach helps alma mater shine Chris Kraus established a milestone Tuesday no other individual has accomplished in Stonehill College men’s basketball history. The former Markham resident and Markham District High School grad can now boast of being part of all three Stonehill College Skyhawks teams in club history that advanced to the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II Elite Eight championships. In his third season as head coach of the Skyhawks, based out of Stonehill, Mass., Kraus directed his fourth-seeded club to an 82-76 win over second seed Saint Anselm College in the Northeast-10 Conference final in Philadelphia. A Stonehill grad, Kraus was the club’s point guard when they made their first Elite Eight appearance in 2006. In 2012, he returned to Stonehill as an assistant coach as they made their second Elite Eight.

It took just five games for the Markham Royals to win their Ontario Junior Hockey League North-East Conference best-of-seven quarter final over the Whitby Fury. But when the Royals face the Kingston Voyageurs in their North-East Conference semifinal that will commence at Markham Centennial Arena Friday at 7:30 p.m., they anticipate it could go a little longer. The clubs sport impressive regular season records with Markham winning their North Division regular season crown with a 31-17-33-68 mark. Kingston, which plays in a highly competitive East Division, was second with a 34-14-2-4-74 record. In the regular season, Kingston had the edge winning three of four head-tohead over Markham. Two were decided in overtime with one played four on four while another went into a second five-minutes of play that was three-on-three.

With the playoffs now in effect, any added time will be played five on five. “We’re expecting a long series,” Royals’ general manager and head coach Mike Galati said. “Kingston is a top team and they’re one of the best in the league.” You won’t get an argument on that from players. “Kingston is a good team. They had more points than us during the regular season and we know that we have to respect them,” said Tyson Bruce, Royals’ forward and the club’s leading scorer during the regular season. “It will be a tough series.” Kingston’s leading scorer is forward Anthony Rinaldi, who was also third overall in the league scoring race with 73 points in 52 games (38 goals, 35 assists). “We definitely have to try and limit his chances,” Galati said. The Voyageurs can also play defence, led by goaltender David Richer, who had the seventh-best average during the regular season with a 2.43 goals against

average, with five shutouts and a .921 save percentage. “They’re definitely a deep team and they have good goaltending,” he noted. While Galati said he will see how the opening game unfolds to determine if they will match lines, he said the key for his team will be to put the blinders on and play their game. “We think we can come up with a win in this series,” Bruce said. “We just have to work hard, stick to our game, that is to keep things simple, play fast hockey and keep the puck out of our own net.” The second game of the series will be played in Kingston Sunday at 2:30 p.m. and return to Markham Centennial Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Kingston hosts the fourth game Wednesday at 7 p.m. If needed, Markham would host a fifth game March 26 at 1:30 p.m., Kingston would host a sixth March 27 at 2:30 p.m. and a seventh would be played at Markham Centennial Arena March 28 at 7:30 p.m.

Giuseppe Strazzeri a true community leader By Brea Bartholet

bbartholet@yrmg.com

A

community without a leader is just a random group. For some within Bradford West Gwillimbury, Giuseppe Strazzeri, more commonly known as “G”, was that kind of leader. It didn’t matter where he was or what he was doing, you could always find the friendly mortgage agent with a smile on his face. And that’s how many people will remember him, after his sudden passing on the morning of March 2, sending a wave of grief throughout BWG. A resident of Bradford for more than 14 years, Strazzeri quickly become involved in multiple groups and fundraisers. If you’re familiar with the Bradford Social Networking Association on Facebook, then it’s likely you had become familiar with Strazzeri’s upbeat demeanour and ongoing drive to connect local residents and businesses alike. From Tequila Friday’s at Don Cherry’s Sports Bar & Grill to the annual BSNA Baseball Tournament held every September, Strazzeri left a truly positive imprint on BWG. “This is a man who the town should never forget,” Carlos Costa wrote on a Facebook post. Costa is one of many close

Lstories ife

friends Strazzeri had made while working – and playing – within BWG. “A man full of life. He will be greatly missed by the town and many friends,” wrote another resident. Born in Sicily, Italy, Strazzeri moved to Canada in 1966 with his parents at the age of four. He moved around many times throughout his childhood, meeting many amazing people along the way.

‘It’s a proud moment when you help someone achieve their goals and dreams, especially when they thought it could never be done.’ But when he arrived in Bradford, he knew it was something special. During his first five years, he sat back and watched the flow of the community, eventually jumping on the chance to open a storefront business. In order to learn what BWG was all about, Strazzeri took the time to attend town meetings and begin building a large net-

work of clients, colleagues and friends. Eventually, he became involved with the Bradford Board of Trade, where he held many positions including executive director, vice-president of membership and vice-president of community relations and government affairs. In a profile written for the BBT, Strazzeri expressed his thoughts regarding linking people within the community. “It’s a proud moment when you help someone achieve their goals and dreams, especially when they thought it could never be done.” Strazzeri certainly helped many within BWG achieve their dreams. As days and weeks go by, now without the bright light of Strazzeri, friends continue to remember him by supporting one another, reminiscing about the times they spent with him and the kind of impact he made on BWG. “He changed my life and, in a way, I believe he saved it,” said Nicole Kim, who worked closely with Strazzeri on a number of projects through the BSNA. “I truly would not be the outgoing person I am today if he did not believe in me. He was my best friend, who never judged anyone. I will miss him.”

Celebrate a life well lived!

“Adored by children, universally respected and an inspiration to her peers, Mrs. McCluskey was a tireless volunteer, quick to deflect the praise heaped on her.”

Giuseppe Strazzeri
