Year after tragedy, impaired driving charges on rise BY JEREMY GRIMALDI

jgrimaldi@yrmg.com

“For as long as (Marco) Muzzo has been alive, courts have warned about the consequences of impaired driving,” Justice Michelle Fuerst began, as she concluded her sentencing in front of a packed, tearful Newmarket courtroom. “Yet the message escaped him. It is important that it does not escape others.” This was one of the judge’s most

powerful statements, which acted as partial justification for sending King resident Marco Muzzo to prison for 10 years. He was made an example of, considering the “enormous harm caused,” and handed the harshest sentence ever doled out in Canada for a first-offence impaired driving charge, with the aim of deterring others from following in his footsteps. Given the tragedy and outrage that followed his behaviour, some

applauded the action. Others found the sentence too light. Looking back, one year on from the tragedy in Vaughan that claimed four people’s lives — Daniel, 9, Harrison, 5, and Milly, 2, Neville-Lake, and Gary Neville, 65 — it seems unclear if this decision has served as a deterrent. After all, the “message” Justice Fuerst speaks of continues to escape York Region residents on a weekly basis. As a result, 2016

t’s the small things — buying underwear, for instance. There’s the boys department, and the girls. Which one do you pick, when your child isn’t sure which gender fits? Mandy Klein made a big mistake when she picked a pack of undies for her teenager Micah from the girls’ section. Turns out, one pair was pink. Micah was so upset thinking about the girlie pink pair donned that morning, her parents say, that by the end of day she’d cut the underwear into tiny pieces and tossed them in the trash. Randy and Mandy Klein are doing their best to treat their child’s gender identity with respect, but sometimes, the Newmarket family struggles with the day-to-day details. Micah, 16, came out as gay last year and several months ago, said they are gender fluid. Micah prefers “they and them”, dresses generically and considers themself male or female depending on the day, and sometimes the time of day. It’s all new territory for the Kleins as they navigate a minefield of language and lifestyle for their only child, who is also autistic. “I avoid using pronouns when I can,” Randy says. He uses Micah’s first name when he thinks of it, but it can get confusing and sometimes, emotional. “I tell her — them — ‘when you correct me…don’t yell. I understand you’re passionate about it, but I forget. It doesn’t mean I’m being disrespectful’.” The Kleins say they will stand by their child, wherever this journey takes them. “If it’s important to Micah, it’s important we fight for them,” Randy says. Micah is a smart kid, he adds, a member of the school LGBTQ club, not troubled with bullying. “They’re doing well. They’ll figure it out.” In the meantime, Mandy says gender-neutral departments in stores would make life easier. It could happen. Our changing approach to gender impacts more than just the English language. Other parts of society that have been traditionally segregated are undergoing a rapid re-think. Anthems are being rewritten (goodbye to “all our sons com-

GENDER IDENTITY A Metroland Special Report mand”), Facebook invites you to customize your gender profile, the Oxford Dictionaries website added “Mx” as an alternative to Mr. or Mrs., and everywhere, lines are blurring between male and female. Some are calling it the new postgender era. Here are some of the shifts we’ve noticed:

PUBLIC WASHROOMS All-access washrooms are popping up everywhere. This summer, Toronto’s CNE garnered accolades for its cheeky take on the topic. Instead of the traditional portaprivy signs showing a man in pants or woman in skirt, the Ex cubicles displayed icons of someone wearing half dress/half pants, along with the words “We Don’t Care”. General manager Virginia Ludy told the Toronto Star the CNE approach diverts the debate to focus on what matters. “Who cares who uses them, right? Men, women, doesn’t matter. You go in, you use it, you do your business, you leave.” SPORTS Hockey in Ontario now has new trans-inclusive rules, unveiled earlier this month thanks to Oshawa teenager Jesse Thompson. Thompson, born a girl, challenged the Ontario minor hockey league’s dressing room policies that prevented him from using the boys change room. His complaint to the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal led Ontario branches of Hockey Canada to post new policies allowing players to choose their dressing room based on whether they see themselves as male or female. FASHION Welcome to the age of “nonbinary refinery.” Fashion runways have become gender-fluid with androgynouslooking models in heels and skirts, trousers and tweed. Fashion design-

Gender-neutral bathrooms at this summer’s CNE in Toronto showed society’s changing attitudes towards gender. They each displayed a half woman-half man graphic with the wording ‘we don’t care’. ers are promoting gender-free clothing, U.K. department store Selfridges has introduced a pop-up agender store and Women’s Wear Daily calls “Going Gender-Neutral” one its top stories of the year. Ben Barry, professor at Ryerson’s school of fashion, applauds the trend. “Everyone has a masculine and feminine side ... Why should clothing fail to reflect that part of who we are?” In researching his book, Refashioning Masculinity, he discovered many men shop in the women’s section because they’re looking for a more playful esthetic or are looking for something that fits. “Maybe it’s time for fashion to play a role in stripping away the divisions and offer us different ways to express gender.”

care for men still comes in mostly “manly” packaging). Target is phasing out genderbased signage and colours — the company’s website still directs buyers to gendered clothing sections, however — and Amazon.com removed its boy and girl options from their toy department search page. (On the Canadian site, the gender division remains.) This summer, following a petition by DadDoes.com, the Toy Industry Association announced it would drop its gender-based Toy of the Year awards. Gender is one of the top four trends to impact the marketplace, research group Mintel says. “People are questioning traditional notions of gender, rejecting restraints of stereotypes and embracing freedom to be themselves.”

CONSUMER PRODUCTS From Entrepreneur Barbie to gender-free nursery decor, marketers are responding to the genderbending trend. International Spa Association Foundation has recognized men are visiting spas more than ever before and increasingly, shopping for cosmetics (although skin

EDUCATION Amid controversy over Ontario’s new sex-ed guidelines, school boards across the GTA, Simcoe County and Muskoka are addressing gender in a variety of ways such as teacher liaisons, professional development, symposiums or gender-neutral washrooms. “Labels and identities should

only be self-selected by individuals, not assumed by others,” Toronto public school board’s 29-page guideline advises. “Biology does not imply identity. Nor do behaviour and expression alone.” Paul Woods, principal of inclusive school and community services with the York Region District School Board, believes the mental health strategy is clear. “We need to reduce the stigma and emphasize safety and accessibility for all.” Watch for part 3 next week.

FASHION FLIP-FLOPS • Pants didn’t really come into fruition until the Renaissance as a solution to men riding horses, and it wasn’t until the Victorian era that a gender divide developed in dress. • Pink was a boys’ colour because it was considered stronger, while blue was more delicate (and for girls) until the 1940s. • Heels were worn by men to help them stay in their stirrups and supplement their stature (the higher their heel, the greater their social rank) until the 18th century. - Source: The NPD Group

We’ve sold these amazing turkeys for the past 30 years. Although the farm has passed from father to son, it’s the same growing and processing technique that produces what we, and many others, feel are the best turkeys available. What makes them so good? It’s simple really. Firstly, they eat lots of grain and corn, as much or as little as they want, because they run loose. Add to this a gentler de-feathering process which leaves more of the flavour (and the odd feather) with the turkey, and you’ll have a bird which exceeds your expectations without the aid of the artificial enhancements that Butterballs and other prebasted turkeys receive. Ours are moist (naturally), tender and full of flavor, and they cook a bit quicker, as well. The turkey sizes this year will be on the large side, starting at 14 lb. up to 21 lb. If it were left entirely up to me, I would pick one in the 17-21 lb. range. They are the heavier hen turkeys, all with a bit more meat on their bones, and more succulent meat at that! Should a whole turkey be too much for you to handle, we do section them into whatever portion would be suitable. There will be boneless breast roasts, in sizes from 3 lb. to 10 lb., and they can be had either stuffed with our Sage & Onion Stuffing, or au naturel. We also make stuffed boneless thighs, which are my fave. Organic turkeys are available at $5.49/lb. They’re around 14-16 lb. /LB each. We only have a limited quantity. Please order ahead.

Could Canada elect a Trump-like leader?

H

MAR KHAM

ere in Canada, the prospect of a Donald Trump presidency is a terrifying one. The real-estate mogul and reality television star has been building support on a campaign of bigotry, misogyny and violence. While his campaign is still trailing that of former secretary of state, senator and first lady Hillary Clinton, the gap in polls is narrow and it is entirely conceivable that Donald Trump might prevail in November. To put it another way: The leader of our closest neighbour, biggest trading partner and longtime ally might be a white-supremacist-approved, lying, narcissistic tyrant. The only comfort we might take in this distressing scenario: at least something like that could never happen here. Or could it? Our parliamentary system of government treats executive power very differently than the American bicameral system. Indeed, in some ways a prime minister with a firm majority can exercise far more power than a president whose party doesn’t also control both the House of Representatives and the Senate. A Trump-like prime minister could make profound and potentially damaging changes to our country, with few to none of the checks on the power of a like-minded president. But could such a prime minister be elected here? Our nomination process means it’s less likely that any party would choose such a polarizing figure as its leader, and in a federal election, voters aren’t faced with a simple choice between two candidates as happens in the U.S. It would be naive to think that Canadians are immune to the kind of xenophobic bigotry and nativism that has fuelled Trump’s rise. At its core, Trump’s success depends on two things — people who are profoundly worried about their future and a society where systemic racism makes it easy to blame “the other” for its problems. We have both here. In 2015, when Stephen Harper’s Conservatives banned women from wearing niqabs when taking citizenship oaths, vowed to revoke citizenship to dual citizens convicted of terrorism and floated the idea of a snitch line for “barbaric cultural practices,” the party had strong support, as evidenced by numerous polls. We can reassure ourselves with the Conservative loss in the election. Yet today, as Trump doubles down on his plan to deport illegal immigrants and bar Muslims from entering the U.S., Conservative leadership candidate Kellie Leitch (who fronted the unappealing snitch line in 2015) is promoting a similarly themed plan to screen out immigrants who hold “anti-Canadian values.” A Forum Research poll conducted after she floated the idea shows that 67 per cent of Canadians and 87 per cent of Conservative supporters like the idea. Does that mean that Canadians are ready to consider handing a Donald Trump the key to 24 Sussex Dr.? We like to think not. But we’d like to think the same of our friends south of the border. And we’d like to know what you think. Share your opinion at newsroom@yrmg.com and we’ll run as many of your responses as space allows in the coming weeks. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Was arena price tag told to us realistic? Just in case anyone was interested, the new Rogers Place arena opened in Edmonton and has cost $614 million (although final tallies are likely not in yet.) A short time ago Markham residents were being told that a city funded arena could be built here for only $325 million.

Hydro ‘rebate’ a stunt Of all the issues in this province that PremierWynne has suddenly “understood”, perhaps her epiphany regarding hydro rates is the greatest. Wynne claims Ontario taxpayers will see a “rebate” on their hydro bill with the removal of the PST, but what she deliberately omits, is that there is an annual 8 per cent rate increase which thus negates the cut. Not to mention there is a carbon tax coming soon. Let’s not forget all the waste and mismanagement that this government specializes in: the gas plant scandal, Ornge, eHealth, etc. Ontario is already the second highest taxed province under the Liberals. If hydro bill relief is truly

Water we doing? I’m very concerned about information released about the sale of our water in Ontario. We are selling trillions of litres. Although the giveaway price is a joke, my main concern is the fact we are willing to get rid of that much water. As climate changes, Canada, blessed with one-fifth of the world’s fresh water, will become a focal point as water becomes more valuable than oil or gold. Don’t we owe it to that future to be prepared? I ask all of you out there to be our voice of reason and do whatever you can to stop this sale and help create laws to protect our water supply.

t’s funny how much newspapers have been a part of my life. When I was a kid, before I could really read that well, there was an ad in the paper from the local hockey league. It featured a stick drawing of a boy on skates, hockey stick in hand. I can still see it. I took it over to my parents and pointed to the picture. “That! I want to do that! Mom! Dad! Pllleeeaaase!!!” My dad thought hockey was for barbarians (I would later learn he’d been knocked out in a game when he was a teenager and never played again). Nevertheless, at 4, I was playing “organized hockey” (which never seemed that organized) and though I gave it up for a while, I still play hockey today. As a kid, I got my name in the paper, a couple of times, both for hockey and the Kiwanis Music Festival. Seeing your name in print, well, it was a big deal. Burned into the memory banks as one of those “life moments”. My family kept the clippings. Delivering the free weekly newspaper was my first job. The paper had lots of ads. And then it started to carry flyers. (I can remember thinking something like: “Flyers? Inserted in the paper? What a dumb idea. I’m sure this will be a passing fad.”) As a teen, I took on a route for a daily newspaper. I had to go around and collect the subscription money. It was odd in that, this was the paper for the business

Bernie O’Neill and professional crowd, yet some of them (just some, mind you) would always claim they didn’t have the money and tell me they’d “get me next time”. I didn’t last too long in that job. I’m sure some of them still owe me, since I sort of bought the papers, and then the subscribers would pay me. Or “get me”, as they put it. Next time. Shades of attitudes toward paying for daily news websites today. When I was at university, I met two guys who were editors at the school paper. They needed reporters. They paid. I was back for my second degree and essentially broke. So I did some writing for them and liked it and soon switched to a journalism/ writing program. I later got a job at a community newspaper and have been with community newspapers ever since, as a reporter and then editor. I never planned on being a columnist as well. I always thought that was for the brave and the brash, who “tell it like it is”, despite the complexities of real life. Although I may as well tell you that, in the Ontario

Community Newspapers Association Awards, I have been nominated for my column six times, either as opinion columnist of the year, or humour columnist of the year. And placed second two times and third four times. With one honourable mention. Meaning? I guess they thought my writing was pretty humourous, just not that humourous, or opinionated, but maybe not opinionated enough. Which is fine with me. As Frank Sinatra said, I did it my way. I wasn’t writing for the accolades anyway. I was trying to make you laugh and maybe think. Or failing that, at least smile and read to the end. (One year I placed first in the Suburban Newspapers of America awards for all of North America as the best community newspaper columnist, so obviously those judges knew what they were doing and knew what I was doing! Even if I didn’t always feel like I knew what I was doing. At least someone knew what I was doing.) This will be my last week as editor — I’m taking a voluntary buyout package the company is offering — and I want to say thank you to all of you who have read the paper, the website and my column over the years. I am not sure what my next job will be, but I hope it will be something where I get to inform and entertain people, and contribute to something that is important to our lives, like the community news. Until then, it has been my privilege.

a Sunday afternoon. I can probably make you cry imagining what it is like to be me existing in an empty and dead house. But I can’t stop you from drinking and driving. My shattered heart can’t. My dead dad can’t. My dead children can’t. Only you can. I hope you choose life.” York Regional Police statistics show there was a 43-per-cent increase in charges between 2012, when there were 877, and 2015, when there were 1,255. So far in 2016, there have been 1,188. “Despite all of our efforts, sadly we continue to deal with people who are making the choice to drink alcohol or use drugs and drive and let me be clear, it is a choice,” Chief Eric Jolliffe. “The consequences of making these bad decisions have never been more apparent. The grief and sorrow that continues to be felt extends far beyond the immediate family, first responders and our investigators. It has touched our entire community. “Yet people are still being allowed to have a drink or use drugs and get behind the wheel of a vehicle while impaired. I am once again asking that those who decide to have any alcohol or drugs to not get behind the wheel of a vehicle. I am also calling upon friends or family members who watch their loved ones have a drink or use drugs to be that person and stand up to prevent them from driving. Impaired driving is completely preventable and we must all do our part to prevent another tragedy on our roads.” The message isn’t getting across to everyone. On Jan. 17, just months after Muzzo crashed into the Neville-Lake vehicle, the vehicle of Newmarket’s Tara Gawlik collided with that of Michael Holden, 26, who was going to see his mother in Newmarket. Holden, 26, died. Gawlik, 36, who driving a Kia Rondo with three children in the car, 13-year-old twins and a 12-year-old, was charged with impaired driving causing death. The case is still before the courts. Tragedies that result from impaired driving can take many forms. This summer, Ryan Lefler, 24, was killed when his motorcycle left the roadway in Keswick and Lauren Mueller, 25, died when her pickup truck crashed into a tree in East Gwillimbury. Both were impaired. In the year following the NevilleLake tragedy, we’ve heard of five incidents in York Region of parents being charged with impaired driving with their children in the vehicles. In one, a nine-year-old boy called police about his 52-year-old mother drinking and driving in Newmarket with him in the car. Also disturbing are the charges

brought against the very individuals who are supposed to be attempting to stop us from drinking and driving. On Jan. 11, off-duty York police Const. Colin Smith was found driving the wrong way on Hwy. 400, resulting in his second impaired driving charge in the last few years. Toronto police Const. Andrew Ford was caught “driving erratically” on Green Lane in East Gwillimbury and charged just weeks after the Neville-Lake tragedy. Kathy Mitchell, president of MADD York Region, who lost her 23-year-old niece, Sharon’s Ashley Fogal, when Fogal’s car was struck by a drunk driver on Aug. 11, 2011, says the tragic cases are disheartening, especially knowing the pain the decision to drink and drive can cause. “It’s very frustrating,” she said. “To have this young couple (the NevilleLakes) who have created a family to

just face that devastation of losing everything. It’s just frustrating that people continue to have no regard for other people in society. You would think that the message would be clear because of such a tragedy, but unfortunately, people are of the mindset that it’s not going to happen to them or they’re invincible or they’re not going to get caught.” She remembers quite clearly the moment she found out about the Neville-Lake tragedy, driving home from a MADD conference in Toronto on that clear, fall day. “Every day, I think of Jennifer and Ed and what they must be going through, because every day, I think of my sister and my mom and my niece and my nephew,” she added. “It just never goes away.” This weekend, she will again head to the national MADD conference, surrounded by other victims. – with files from Lisa Queen

Metroland File photo

Jennifer Neville-Lake shows swarms of media outside the courtroom, a picture of two of her children holding hands before they died. Daniel Neville-Lake, 9, and siblings Harrison, 5, Milly, 2, as well as their grandfather, were killed in a drunk driving crash last September. York Regional Police and MADD York Region representatives are concerned impaired driving tragedies continue to ruin families.

How to create a great study environment at home A student’s academic performance is influenced by a host of factors, including the learning environment both inside the classroom and at home. While students may have only limited control over the environment in their classrooms, they and their parents can do much to create home study environments that are conducive to learning. • Create a “distraction-free” zone. Today’s students are inundated with distractions. Whereas students were once most distracted by radios, televisions and the great outdoors when studying at home, nowadays kids must also find time to focus on their studies with their

tablets and smartphones just a stone’s throw away. When choosing a study area at home, parents can designate a “distraction-free” zone where

no televisions, radios, tablets and smartphones are allowed. Children are increasingly dependent on their smartphones and tablets, and while such

devices can sometimes prove useful to students, that benefit is often outweighed by the distraction they present. When kids study at night, be sure they turn off their smartphones and only use their tablets as study aids. • Emphasize organization. Various organization techniques can help kids be more efficient when studying. Encourage kids to separate their learning materials by subject, and keep a calendar or daily planner at home listing when their assignments are due and which days they will be tested. Encourage youngsters to keep their home study areas tidy as

well, as unorganized areas can make it harder to focus or force kids to spend some of their study time cleaning up. • Establish quiet hours at home. Quiet hours at home while kids are studying can help them better absorb their coursework, and that may lead to improved performance in the classroom. While it’s important that a kids’ study areas remain distraction-free, it can also help if distractions outside those areas are minimized. Keep televisions and other potentially noisy distractions turned off while kids are studying. If you want to catch up on a favourite television show or

watch a movie, do so on your tablet instead of the television, connecting earphones so kids are not overhearing anything while they’re trying to study. • Keep healthy snacks on hand. Hunger can be just as distracting as electronics, so keep healthy snacks on hand. In lieu of unhealthy fare like potato chips, keep your home stocked with fruits and vegetables and protein-rich snacks like Greek yogurt. Comedians unite for Italian quake relief show at Yuk Yuk’s BY ADAM MARTIN-ROBBINS

amartinrobbins@yrmg.com

Many Italian-Canadians have been looking for ways to help those impacted by the powerful earthquake that rocked central Italy in August, killing nearly 300 people. Stand-up comic Frank Spadone decided to do what he knows best – put on a comedy show. “We’re so fortunate that we have these gifts ... and every now and then you think, I should use this (gift) to help people out and that’s

what I decided,” said Spadone, a Richmond Hill resident known for drawing much of his material from growing up in an Italian-Canadian household. “I just called a few of my funny friends that they would probably want to be on board and they were, of course. They didn’t even bat an eyelash.” The Italian Earthquake Relief Charity Show takes place Sunday, Oct. 2 at Yuk Yuk’s comedy club, 70 Interchange Way, in Vaughan.

Joining Spadone on stage will be Toronto comedian Sandra Carusi and The Doo Wops comedy duo featuring David Mesiano and John Catucci, best known as host of Food Network series You Gotta Eat Here.

‘rich heritage’ “There’s so much rich heritage for the world that Italy provides from food to fashion to cars to music and when you see it fall apart like that and the people who lose homes, it’s really heart-wrenching,”

said Carusi, whose family lives less than two hours from Amatrice, the epicentre of the earthquake. “I’m a big proponent of using laughter to heal. I’ve been battling cancer two years and am still in treatment. For me it’s a big deal to use humour to kind of balance out the darkness of the world.” Catucci said he didn’t hesitate when Spadone called to ask him about doing the show. “When I heard about the earthquake happening, everybody was

feeling sad about it, but I guess the Italians felt a bigger connection and were figuring out how we can help,” Catucci said. “When Frank gave me a shout and said, ‘We’re doing this fundraiser.’ I said, ‘Yes, for sure.’ It wasn’t even a question.” Tickets cost $30 plus tax with box office proceeds going to the Red Cross Italian disaster relief fund. Newly planted trees now stand as a symbol of peace in Markham. On Saturday, the city hosted a park dedication ceremony to mark 100 years since the Armenian genocide. Federal, provincial and municipal government officials and members of the Armenian Genocide Centennial Committee for Canada waited in anticipation as the Forest of Hope was unveiled. The new Forest of Hope will be a place of peace and hope for the Armenian community across the GTA. “This small forest conveys an enormous message of new life,” said provincial minister of international trade, Michael Chan, during the official opening ceremony of the memorial. “These young trees will establish deep roots, grow tall and their branches will reach for the sky — just like the Armenian community.” More than one-and-a-half million Armenians were systematically massacred by the Ottoman Empire starting in early 1915. Canada is one of two dozen countries that recognize the events as the first genocide of the 20th century. “We know the meaning of genocide, its history and the importance of education,” said Armen Yeganian, ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the Republic of

Have the right

Armenia to Canada. “We have to continue to educate, not just today, tomorrow or the first 100 years. But always, because unfortunately it still continues to happen.” Many argue the Armenian genocide set a precedent for other mass killings such as the Holocaust during the Second World War as well as events in Kosovo and Rwanda in the 1990s. The Forest of Hope is one of about a 100 projects to commemorate the genocide’s anniversary across the country started by the Canadian arm of the Armenian Genocide Centennial Committee, which was founded four years ago. “And this is the best one, because it calls for hope and peace,” Yeganian said. The Forest of Hope is located in Ashton Meadows Park near Woodbine Avenue north of 16th Avenue. The park was designed by renowned landscape architect Haig Seferian and consists of 100 different trees, with different blooming times throughout the year. “Despite being displaced, the Armenian community is determined,” said Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “The next generation of Armenians will be just as proud as the first Armenians who came to Canada. That’s a wonderful thing.” Last week, the Armenian community celebrated the 25-year anniversary of Armenian independence.

Three-man variety show at Flato Theatre will feature new, classic songs culture to jaunty and comedic folk songs. “We’ve got sketches, and tunes, and songs and recitations,” Blackmore said. “So we’re all over the map.” Many of the most iconic segments to arise from the group’s 30 years are its sketches, which give life to characters played by Blackmore, Chaulk and Johnson — such as the blues playing Slewed Brothers, L’il Johnny Wimple, who recites poems, and a highstrung old couple using modern technology for the first time. These segments also reflect on Newfoundland culture and human nature in general, while providing a lot of laughs. “All of these things kind of span the gamut from serious songs and traditional songs through comedic songs and novelty songs,” Blackmore said, “all the way to outright foolishness inside of sketches.” Tickets for the show, which begins at 8 p.m., are available for $40 for the general public, $38 for seniors, $36 students and $32 for children 12 and under, and can be purchased at by calling 905-305-7469. Flato Markham Theatre is at Hwy. 7 and Warden Avenue, near the Markham Civic Centre.

Newfoundland folk music fixtures Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellas will bring a taste of ‘the Rock’ to Markham with a performance at the Flato Markham Theatre on Oct. 3. Known since the early 1980s for their catalogue of comedic and classic Atlantic Canadian folk songs, and amusing sketches featuring recurring characters, the group’s three core members — manager and founder Kevin Blackmore, Ray Johnson and Wayne Chaulk — are no strangers to Ontario and Canada’s capital. Blackmore, also known as Buddy Wasisname, said the trio first performed in Ottawa in 1990. They’ve also gained a fourth member — an honorary “feller” — in bass player, driver and all around handyman Byron Pardy, who tours with the group. With a discography of more than 15 albums, Blackmore said audiences at the group’s fall tour shows can expect a mix of familiar favourites and unreleased material. Their most popular songs range from nostalgic ballads reflecting on Newfoundland

Being fortunate enough to earn a living in the golf business has come with its share of advantages for Kevin Thistle. For Thistle, the former vice-president and general manager at Angus Glen Golf Club in Unionville, meeting Arnold Palmer was one of those unforgettable moments. Like millions worldwide he was saddened to hear one of golf’s titans died Sunday at the age of 87. At the same time though, it didn’t totally catch Thistle by surprise. In fact, when attending this year’s Masters in Augusta, Ga., he recalled rumours were circulating about Palmer’s declining health. First meeting Palmer in 2004 when he attended the 100th anniversary celebration for the Bell Canadian Open and the following year in commemorating the 50th anniversary of his first PGA victory at the 1955 Canadian Open at the Weston Golf and Country Club, Thistle was quick to point out what separated Palmer from other PGA players he’s met was his personable nature. “He was one of the nicest individuals you’ve ever met,” Thistle said of the man known as The King. “He wasn’t aloof. He was approachable and easy to talk to.” Currently employed at Windmill Golf Group, where he’s vice-president of business

development, Thistle also ran into Palmer any time he took to the fairways at the Bay Hill Club in Orlando during the winter months, as he had an ownership interest in the facility. “He was there quite a bit and any time I met him he always had time to say ‘Hi’,” recalled Thistle. “Even a lot of my friends who go to Orlando and play at Bay Hill also said they’ve met him there and he’s always had time to talk to them. “He was so approachable.” Palmer will be remembered as a trailblazer and a mentor to PGA players. “Jack Nicklaus was my golf idol, but really, Arnold Palmer set the way for everybody,” Thistle said of the man who had 62 PGA Tour victories and four Masters’ titles. “He’s not just a legend, he’s a legend among legends,” Thistle said. “He was one of the guys that whenever sports was shown on television he became an instant superstar. “He was the pioneer who made golf. His style, he made the game cool to play and he was a good looking guy and he showed emotion on the golf course. He really set the way for everybody who is on the PGA Tour today and for the game to explode. Guys like Tiger Woods are appreciative of what Arnold Palmer did for the game. “If it wasn’t for Arnold Palmer, the guys on the PGA Tour today would not be making the money they make now.”

How do you celebrate an anniversary? In the case of the Canadian Chinese Table Tennis Association, which is now 10 years old, and the People’s Republic of China, which is 67, why not put on a table tennis competition? Not just any competition. Rather, one with the largest cash prize for a North American table tennis tournament at $50,000 in the Double Fish Cup International Invitational to be held at the Canadian Chinese Table Tennis Association’s facility starting Friday, Sept. 30. Jeffrey Lau, CCTA vice-president external affairs, said 115 professional players from around the world will take part in this highcalibre event that includes singles and team competitions. Among those include three entries from China including their men’s A and B teams and women’s A team. Included on the three-member men’s A team are Fang Bo, ranked 12th in the world and Yu Zhou, ranked as high as 13th in the world in 2014. On the Chinese women’s team is world’s 13th ranked Yang Wu. Canada will be represented with their men’s national team, which includes Eugene

Wang, ranked 57th, along with entries from the United States men’s and women’s national teams, Team Europe, which includes 20th ranked Andrej Gacina of Croatia; Team Romania, which has the 68th ranked world player in Ovidio Ionescu, and Team South America, with 162nd ranked Thiago Monteiro of Brazil. “There will be some excellent matches to watch,” Lau predicted. In organizing the event, he said it would not have been possible were it not for Double Fish, who are supplying all of the playing equipment including the tables and balls, along with $25,000 as part of the cash prize. The team competition begins Friday at 10 a.m. and concludes Sunday. Singles’ play starts Saturday at 9:20 a.m. and finishes that same day. In addition to hosting the professional singles and team competition, the association will host a non-professional singles competition. “We want to let everybody enjoy the game,” Lau said. To compete in this division, a player cannot have a Canadian ranking of anything higher than 2,800. Admission is $20 at the door. The CCTA is located at 1181 Denison St. in Markham.

The proposed new home of the Canadian Chinese Table Tennis Association. Some 33,000-square feet would be for table tennis and another 33,000-square feet for multi-purpose usage. The remainder would be allocated for office space.

If you enjoy watching competitive table tennis, don’t miss this weekend’s Double Fish Cup International Invitational to be held at the Canadian Chinese Table Tennis Assocation facility in Markham. For story, see page 27.

50%

In the 10 years of their existence, the Markhambased Canadian Chinese Table Tennis Association has grown. What began with around 20 members has now ballooned to more than 1,000. Through the first 10 years of existence, the club received federal and provincial government grants totaling $400,000 to expand and update their present 24,000-square foot facility. Still that’s not big enough to accommodate their requirements. Jeffrey Lau, CCTA vice-president of external affairs, said they are in the process of creating a new facility at Birchmount and Denison Street. To be called the Markham Multicultural Centre, Lau revealed they hope to secure a building permit by October and begin construction of a 71,000-square foot facility in November, and see it open by August, 2017.
