Local products and specialities reflect the rich and varied food culture of Finland’s regions, well worth discovering in local food shops or cafés. Trueflavours.fi is an easy way to track down local food businesses and producers. Search for a business by product group, such as vegetables, fish or bakery products. The map search helps you find interesting food-related places to stop off en route, wherever in Finland you happen to be. And with the mobile app, you can locate a local farm shop where you can buy meat products or berries when you’re out and about on holiday. You might well find there’s a local produce or organic food shop with a wide range of products on offer from the local area – from chocolate to speciality flours – just a stone’s throw away.
The Aitojamakuja.fi site is maintained by the nationwide True Flavours II project (20122014), whose aim is to boost the visibility and accessibility of small businesses and improve awareness of small scale food production. The project is run under the Rural Development Programme for Mainland Finland and is funded by the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment for Häme as a nationwide project.

Lake Tuusula truly deserves to have been nominated the regional lake of Southern Finland (Uusimaa), because here we have the springs that created the national identity of the Finns. More than a hundred years ago a group of artists, e.g. Jean Sibelius, Eero Järnefelt, Pekka Halonen, J.H. Erkko and Juhani Aho with his wife Venny Soldan-Brofeldt, formed a cultural community on the shores of the lake. They created the foundations of the Finnish cultural identity. It is wonderful that most of these cultural homes are today open for public and

portray the life in former times. On the other hand, there are a lot of potential recreational choices either in the winter or summer, both for people living here or further away. You should try the 24 km long cycling trail around Lake Tuusula, passing by most of the attractions. It is only a 30 min drive from Helsinki. The hungry and weary tourist is warmly welcomed by the numerous cafeterias, restaurants and accommodation options. text: Tarja Vuokkovaara

MARITIME APPEAL
H
elsinki’s maritime silhouette is part of the national landscape of Finland. In Helsinki, the sea is an essential part everyday life. The sea surrounds the city on three sides. Helsinki has almost 100 kilometres of shoreline and around 300 islands. Many of the islands are accessible for recreational use. The archipelago offers endless opportunities for experiences throughout the year.
H
elsinki’s South Harbour (Eteläsatama) is a hub for ferry services and one of Europe’s most beautiful harbours. Helsinki has several high-quality island restaurants that are easy to get to by ferry from the mainland.
I
n the heart of the archipelago is Suomenlinna Sea Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is open year round. The fortress islands offer lots to see and do for visitors of all ages: bastion walls, cannons, tunnels, museums, cafés and restaurants. The municipal ferry to Suomenlinna also operates in wintertime and is a fun experience in itself.
I
n summertime, ferries from the mainland operate to Helsinki Zoo on the island of Korkessaari, the recreational islands of Pihlajasaari and Uunisaari, and the charming historical town of Porvoo.
W
ealthy residents built summer villas on the islands off the coast of Helsinki in the 1800s. The island of Pihlajasaari was one of these villa islands that is now a recreational area that is very popular among sunbathers. The smaller island of Uunisaari also has a swimming beach and is located just three minutes from the mainland by ferry. The island of Harakka is rich in plants and birdlife.
H
elsinki has two travel seasons: summer and winter. The summer season starts in May and ends in September. Most of the archipelago and island tours run only during the summer season.

uring wintertime one can visit e.g. Seurasaari and Korkeasaari islands by foot or bus transportation.
***** CAMPING
Welcome to Rastila – a city holiday with a camping spirit! 5-star Rastila Camping Helsinki is located in Vuosaari in eastern Helsinki and is one of the most popular camping sites in Finland. It has a wide range of accommodation services, maintenance buildings, saunas, a restaurant and a beach.
L
ong walks by the sea are a part of the local culture in Helsinki. Helsinki’s islands and coastline are perfect places to enjoy the fresh air and swimming. The most popular swimming beach is Hietaniemi, or “Hietsu” as it is known locally. Here you can swim and sunbathe, as well as play volleyball or minigolf. Visitors can try an authentic Finnish sauna e.g. on the island of Uunisaari or in the brand new Kulttuurisauna “Culture Sauna” beside the sea in Hakaniemi.
T
he island of Harakka is rich in plants and birdlife.Kalasatama, Jätkäsaari and Kruunuvuorenranta are former harbour areas that are being converted into new residential and commercial districts, offering visitors a unique perspective on the city’s maritime past, present and future.
Rastila also has a summer hostel that is suitable for families. Hostel is open 16.6.-30.7.2014. In the immediate vicinity are large shopping centres and plenty of opportunities for recreation. The metro ensures an easy access to Helsinki´s attractions. Rastila is open year round.

Lake Vanaja or Vanajavesi is the central lake of Kokemäenjoki river basin in the region of Tavastia Proper and Pirkanmaa. In the beginning of 1900’s an important part of the image of Finland was Aulanko. Aulanko is the main part of Vanajavesi historical national landscape and a nationwide cherished scenery. For more than a century, the verdure on the east shores of Lake Aulanko have been admired from the lookout tower of Aulanko Hill.
The charming view of wilderness and forests has always been an inspiration to artists. It has been believed that when Mr Sibelius was composing the famous Finlandia Hymn, he was thinking of this scenery where he was born. Here in the Vanajavesi surroundings have also other impressive cultural persons like Akseli GallenKallela ja Eino Leino dwelled on.

Close to nature in South Päijänne Päijänne’s unique and varied lakeland nature, clean water, esker scenery, rich flora and a large section of the leisure residents combine the area’s three municipalities, Asikkala, Padasjoki and Sysmä. Asikkala is charmingly idyllic, Padasjoki is home to beautiful national park scenery and Sysmä is packed full of events during the summer.
Päijänne National Park The centre of Finland’s second largest lake, Päijänne, contains a treat for nature tourists: an area containing steep rocks, sandy eskers, isolated lagoons and small islets - Päijänne national park. The national park is located in southern Päijänne and the park contains around fifty islands and islets. At the heart of the national park is Kelvenne, which at eight kilometres long is one of the country’s largest and most handsome esker islands. Other esker islands are Papinsaari, Huhtsaari and Hietasaari. Harjusaari has numerous beaches and lagoon-like coves which are popular with hikers, boaters and canoers. Pulkkilanharju acts as a south-eastern gateway to the park. A nature path winds its way to the park from the Karisalmi resting place.

LANGINKOSKI IMPERIAL FISHING LODGE MUSEUM Tsar Alexander III visited the Langinkoski Rapids in the summer of 1887 with his wife, Princess Dagmar of Denmark. During this visit, the emperor couple expressed their wish to have a fishing lodge built by the rapids. The Finns were quick to realise the wish and the opening party for the imperial fishing lodge was organised in the summer of 1889. The artefacts in the lodge are original and almost entirely of Finnish making. The lodge has been restored to its original state. The fishing lodge of the Russian Tsar Alexander III and Empress Dagmar – later known as Maria Feodorovna – in the Langinkoski conservation area is the only building of the Tsar that has been preserved outside the Russian borders. The entire area in Langinkoski is steeped in history and there is still an imperial ambiance to the lodge.

Other well-known basins are Puruvesi, which is famous for its clear water, desert lake Luonteri and rugged Kolovesi. The Eastern part of Finnish Lakeland is mostly Lake Saimaa.
THE BEAUTY OF NATURE IS MEANT FOR EVERYONE! Finland offers gorgeous scenery, clean shores and varying trails for outdoor recreation. You can enjoy the natural environment rather freely in Finland. At the best places, there are rest spots and campfire sites designated for visitors. The aim is to keep the Finnish landscape and destinations pleasant for all.
General Instructions for Nature Exploration • • • • • • • •
Do not disturb wild animals and plants. Do not disturb other visitors. Let other people enjoy the peace and quiet of nature too. Always clear away your own rubbish and do not leave other items in the terrain either. Take care of the structures at the destination and protect nature on your part. Do not make a noise when hiking or boating. Do not play the radio in nature. You may spend 1-2 days in a tent or on a boat at a constructed recreational spot. You are not allowed to put any liquid waste or rubbish into the natural waters. Visitors must make space for newcomers or depart when they have finished their packed meal. Telling stories around the campfire is Finnish wilderness tradition at its best!
Lighting a Campfire At the destinations, lighting a campfire is only allowed at the designated campfire sites. The firewood in the firewood shelters is intended for the use of the visitors. Saw and chop only the amount of firewood that you need. If you light a campfire, also make sure you extinguish it. Always be careful when handling fire, particularly when the terrain is dry!
Litter-free Hiking • • •
Combustible waste such as paper and plastic that is suitable for burning can be burned on a campfire. Food waste and fruit peels can be taken to the composting toilet. Take all other waste with you and put it into a managed collection bin.
Responsible visitors manage their waste in an environmentally friendly way. On nature excursions, always carry out what you carry in!
Nature’s Bounty • • •
In Finland, everyone is allowed to pick forest berries and mushrooms. Damaging trees, shrubs or other plants is prohibited. An official permit is required for hunting and fishing. Only angling and ice fishing at lakes are allowed without a permit, though even these activities are prohibited on flowing waters.
On your berry and mushroom picking excursions and fishing trips, keep at such a distance from the yards of private houses and cottages that the residents do not feel disturbed.
Emergency instructions
In an emergency, dial 112. Inform the operator of your location and what has happened and listen to their instructions.

Kangasniemi is located at the heart of Finland, on main road 13 in Etelä-Savo. The nearest cities are Pieksämäki (49 km), Mikkeli (52 km) and Jyväskylä (63 km). Helsinki is 250 km away. Local History Museum The museum is located in the main village in a granary dating from 1913. Its exhibits number around two thousand and the first of them were collected as early as 1937. The speciality of the museum is a chimneyless hut rebuilt inside the granary. The hut was abandoned by its last occupants in 1937. The museum, owned and run by the local history society, is open on june and july, Tue-Sun 12-15. The Kutemajärvi Nature Trail The trail is ideal for hiking and getting to know a typical wooded Savo landscape. The hiker will realise how versatile and fascinating an “ordinary” commercial forest can be. The main idea of the trail is not to illustrate specialities of nature, but you will find them too. The nature trail starts and ends in the Kutemajärvi village about 15 km towards Pieksämäki from the main village of Kangasniemi. The trail is 11 km long but there is a short cut if the hike feels too long. The trail is clearly marked. Naarajoki canoeing route The Naarajoki canoeing route is altogether 110 km long. Sixty kilometres of it is river. There are several places to rest or stay overnight along the way. The Naarajoki route is a veritable water nature trail which starts in Naarajärvi in Pieksämäen maalaiskunta and passes through Naarajoki, Nykälänjoki, Kyyvesi, Läsäkoski and Rauhajärvi to lake Puulavesi in Kangasniemi. The information at the Town Hall sell a route map updated yearly.

Visit Kristinestad, where the old and the new time meets in a unique way
EVENT
A harmonic seaside setting The straight lines adored during the Renaissance still play a crucial role in the street plan of the city centre. The development of the last hundreds of years is evident in the various styles of wooden houses that line the narrow streets and lanes. The crown jewels are the Empire style merchants’ trade buildings. The seaside blocks have previously housed ship owners and the rest of the bourgeoisie. The further away from the seaside, the smaller the houses become – following the social classes.

Kristinestad has unique customs buildings dating back to 1680 and 1720, reminding us that customs duty used to be charged to people arriving in the city during the Swedish reign. Now the city can be visited free of charge and any time!
Visitors to Kristinestad often wish that they could take a look at the idyllic wooden house environment from the inside. They want to experience a genuine feeling and see the way people live and breathe. The wooden houses hold many stories from different centuries.

In June, the event Öppna portar – Avoimet portit (”open gates”) takes place in Kristinestad’s city centre. During this event, some house owners leave their gates open and let people come in and take a look at their gardens. Some of them even let the visitors take a look inside their house. Everyone will then get the chance to enjoy and become acquainted with different types of gardens. There are paved gardens, wild gardens, modern gardens, Japanese-influenced gardens, and courtyards with plants whose seeds that – perhaps by accident – were brought here with ballast during the seafaring era, for instance from the Mediterranean region. The event has become a success among visitors. Annually, about 30-35 yards get involved in the event. Accordingly, there is lots to see and do during the event! Visitors can also enjoy different types of entertainment for both children and adults: music and theatre, exhibitions, flea markets and cafes in the yards, gardening lectures and so on. Welcome! The legend of the plains support of the family. Toivo handled his responsible duty perfectly by following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather as a peddler.
The original village shop, founded by Toivo Keskinen, now serves as a coffee shop. Photo from year 1969.
The great, great grandfather of the present merchant Vesa Keskinen, Kustaa Keskinen, travelled around southern Ostrobothnia in the 19th century selling all kinds of small items. Kustaa’s son, Matias Keskinen continued his father’s life work as a peddler. Matias, however, died fairly young entrusting his 17-year-old son Toivo the
After the wars Toivo Keskinen established the first stationary shopping place in Tuuri in 1946.In 1969 Toivo Keskinen moved his shop to the place where it still is. Toivo’s sons, Matti and Mikko Keskinen, bought their father’s company, T.M.K. Keskinen, in 1976 and changed the name to Veljekset Keskinen (= Brothers Keskinen) Ltd. In 1986 Matti’s brother Mikko sold his share to Matti after ten years of making business together. Matti’s son Vesa Keskinen started to work in the VillageShop in 1987 and graduated “the only Village-
Shop school of Economics” in the world having father Matti as a “teacher”. Matti promised to concentrate on his beloved hobbies from that moment on, but once a merchant always a merchant and Matti is still pretty often seen on the aisles of the store and he participates actively in business actions, too. Vesa Keskinen - being a man with lots of new ideas and having no prejudice what so ever - brought with him a new way of thinking: Veljekset Keskinen will not be just a store, it is also to become a tourist attraction without comparison with its unique events and atmosphere.

Tankar, the Lighthouse Island of Kokkola! ‘Tankar for me is like a paradise, the rugged and rocky island and Seabuckthorn, a whole cluster of small cottages and piers, a lighthouse, pilot station and all of this hanging over the salt scent that takes us to the Gulf of Bothnia bottomless riches’ (Erla Hovilainen 1945) The lighthouse island of Tankar is situated in the outer archipelago of the Bay of Bothnia, about 15 km northwest of Kokkola. The island is approximately 900 meters long and 500 meters wide and it was called Klippan (the rock) in the 16th century. The islands lighthouse was built in 1889 and it’s still in use. There is also an old fishing village, a chapel, a bird-watching tower and a piloting station on the island. www.tankar.fi This rugged and rocky island was for centuries a base for fishermen and seal hunters. Since then, the island became an important landmark for seafarers. Today Tankar is unquestionably one of the most popular tourist destinations in Kokkola, and in the summer there is a regular scheduled passenger traffic. The joy of being active and relaxed Its nature and location at the centre of one of Europe’s last wilderness areas give the Taivalkoski region endless possibilities for relaxation and recreation all year round. The activities in Taivalkoski only rest when you do. In the summertime, guests can glide along our fantastic canoeing routes, cascade down rapids or try their hand at fishing. Different types of recreational adventures provide rewarding experiences year round. In this area, winter truly lives up to its name. Of all of Finland, this region will be the most likely to be covered by snow all winter. There is no better way to view this pure, white landscape than to take a fast ride along one of Finland’s best snowmobile trails or a more peaceful dogsled tour. Make an excursion into the wilds on snowshoes. The snow and ice attract cross-country skiers to the trails, slalom skiers to Taivalvaara Fell and anglers to try their hand at ice fishing. Eat, Drink & Enjoy Taste our local food, enjoy the local entertainment. When hunger takes you by surprise, the dining facilities of Taivalkoski meet everyone’s wish. Traditional regional delicacies and other delightful treats are available 7 days a week from local entrepreneurs.
The land of a thousand stories In Taivalkoski, you are at the heart of nature wherever you go. Nature is also visible in our services. We give our guests the opportunity to experience the Koillismaa area in the same way we experience it – a cosy cradle of quietude, which is also always ready for an adventure. Taivalkoski is the land of a thousand tales, thanks to our own Kalle Päätalo, a local writer who has gained national renown. Taivalkoski’s gift to Finland at large also still has a strong influence on its home region. Taivalkoski gives you the chance to lose yourself in the peace that is Päätalo’s world and bring his stories to life on a personal level. The story landscapes have been charted, recorded and traversed. When Päätalo Week draws Kalle’s faithful fans to Taivalkoski in July, it is sure to win over the hearts of today’s storytellers. New tales will take wing and legends will come to life

Inari Municipality The largest and most beautiful
Inari is the largest municipality in Finland and it was established in 1876. The Lemmenjoki National Park and part of the Urho Kekkonen National Park are situated in the municipality.
Tourism
Inari is one of Finland’s major and most international tourist destinations. Hundreds of thousands of tourists visit our district each year, and the tourist seasons fluctuate seamlessly in time with the four magnificent seasons. Cultural services Activities in multicultural Inari play a vital role in ensuring the optimum conditions to preserve its different cultures and record both the material and non-material culture and spiritual values. Inari and its traditional events Since 1974, folk musicians from different parts of Finland and Lapland as well as from the North Calotte have come together for the Ivalon Pelimannipäivät days at the end of July. Since 1987, the annual Lapin Kultaviikko gold week in early August has started off at Lemmenjoki river. Inari Day at the end of August is spent discovering the local culture – traditional sacred sites, goldfields and Sámi areas… Since 1991, Teatterisavotta has been diffusing theatrical performances, drama instruction, story telling and evening gettogethers as well as theatrical music throughout the municipality for a week in September; Inari has been awarded a national amateur dramatic prize for the event. Kaamosviikko week at the beginning of November has been Inari’s cultural showcase for 20 years. Since 1981, traditional jazz has featured at Kaamosjazz in Inari on the last weekend in November. Films and documentaries closely associated with the cultures of indigenous peoples have been shown at the Skábmagovat Film Festival at the Sámi Museum Siida in Inari village during the January winter twilight.

Window into Sámi culture and Arctic nature!
Inari and the Sámi culture
Inari is at the heart of Sámi culture in Finland. Representatives of the Sámi cultures in Inari have fostered the advancement of their own cultures and in doing so, they have also promoted the municipality. The Sámi Museum Siida, Sámi Radio, the Saami Parliament and Sámi church all reflect Inari’s three rich Sámi cultures. source of information www.inari.fi/en
