SENATE SQUARE The Senate Square and its surroundings form a unique and cohesive example of Neoclassical architecture. The square is dominated by four buildings designed by Carl Ludvig Engel between 1822 and 1852: Helsinki Cathedral, the Government Palace, the main building of the University of Helsinki and the National Library of Finland. Helsinki Cathedral is arguably Finland’s most famous and photographed building; it celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2002. The oldest stone building in Helsinki is the Sederholm House located on the southeast corner of the square. The main building of the City Museum can be found on the Sofiankatu museum street.. Senate Square is located near the lively atmosphere of the Market Square and comfortable Esplanade Park.

Kiasma is a museum of contemporary art under the umbrella of the Finnish National Gallery. Its primary role is to educate the public on contemporary art and to strengthen the status of art in Finland in general. A lively cultural centre and meeting place, Kiasma is the place for pleasure and experience. The name derives from ‘chiasm’, which stands for an intersection, particularly the crossing of optic nerves.

The Operations of Kiasma The basic functions of the museum are organising changing exhibitions and augmenting its collection, along with research and presentation of the works. Together with active audience work and the programming of the Kiasma Theatre, they constitute a living whole. Augmenting the collection is a major aspect of the operations of Kiasma. The primary focus in the museum collection is on Finnish contemporary art. The collection is also supplemented by commissioning new work. The collection is presented to the public in annually changing thematic exhibitions. Kiasma is an accessible, active and participatory museum. It stimulates discussion on art and thereby on topical social issues. A diverse, changing programme allows the museum to reach different audiences. Kiasma is much more than just a museum.

Helsinki University Museum

Museums new main exhibition will open in Helsinki University Main Building in March 2015.

The Helsinki Observatory functions as a visitor centre that opens new perspectives on both current research on the universe and the history of astronomy. The Observatory uses the latest technology to present historical items. Exhibitions seek to illustrate and visualise information and to engage and offer insight to visitors. The aim is to provide visitors with an overview of the structure of the solar system and the universe as well as phenomena that can be observed in our sky, and to present both historical and cutting-edge research in astronomy. Completed in 1834 as a result of collaboration between architect C.L. Engel and Professor of Astronomy F.W. Argelander, the observatory building of the University of Helsinki led the way with its ingenious solutions that were soon copied throughout the world. The Observatory currently displays a wide range of original observation instruments, such as the large transit instrument, the meridian circle and the Argelander refractor. The Helsinki Observatory on the Tähtitorninmäki Hill is part of the Helsinki University Museum. The building accommodates not only the visitor centre known as the Centre for Astronomy, but also the offices of Ursa and the University’s Almanac Office.
