GRAND PODIUM FOR FPR

Doric racer Will Davison continued his strong start to the 2013 V8 Supercar season with a podium finish at the Australian Grand Prix event in Melbourne, in mid-March. Consistent results saw Davison take third position overall in the non-Championship weekend after four races aboard his Pepsisponsored FPR-run Ford Falcon. “I feel in a way that I shouldn’t have finished on the podium, but I was consistent without having race-winning pace, and that consistency was what made the difference compared to everyone else,” Will Davison said. “We tried a few different things in Melbourne, which will help us as the year goes on. It is a challenging track so while we weren’t terrible, we still have some

6

work to do.” FPR team mate Mark Winterbottom wasn’t as fortunate on the Albert Park street circuit and endured a tough weekend. A seventh place finish in Saturday’s race was Winterbottom’s best result of the weekend after a penalty in Friday’s race and a collision on Sunday saw him finish at the back of the field. “Overall it was a tough weekend in Melbourne and a lot of things didn’t go right. We have to learn from what happened and focus on the next round,” Mark Winterbottom said. “Next year I hope I can return to Melbourne and have a successful weekend because it’s one of my favourite events and circuits.”

7

Will Davison started his 2013 V8 Supercar Championship campaign with a solid performance at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide last month. The Pepsi Max Crew FPR driver secured a podium finish with a third place result aboard his new Ford Falcon FG in the opening race of the weekend. He then backed it up with a sixth place effort in the final race on Sunday, despite bent steering and problems during a pit stop. “Even though we wanted to win the weekend, overall I am still happy with how both races went and to finish towards the top of the leader board,” Will Davison said.

8

The first weekend for V8 Supercar’s Car of the Future saw only a single safety car deployment, with new car reliability a crucial factor for drivers including Davison. The Doric driver says his new race car has good pace, however work still needs to be done to make sure it’s consistent for the rest of the season. “Everyone in the team worked hard to get the car ready for Adelaide, and we made a lot of progress with the car over the weekend. “Our speed was really good, and once we iron out some new car problems, we will be on the money for the rest of the season.”

Mark Winterbottom had a frustrating weekend on the streets of Adelaide for the V8 Supercar Championship season opener last month. Winterbottom, who started on the front row of the grid for the opening race of the Clipsal 500, was forced to pull out after the first lap because of a gear box issue aboard his Pepsi Max Crew FPR Falcon. “The lap I did in the race was quick but unfortunately I didn’t do enough of them,” Mark Winterbottom said. “I had a great start to the race and a huge gap, however by the end of the first lap I lost the gearbox and had to pit. The team

10

had no choice but to replace it and that was the end of our day.” In Sunday’s race, the Doric racer had problems during a pit stop, which caused him to slip down the field early on in the race. However, he fought back well and managed to finish in fifth position and pick up a few valuable points. “In Sunday’s race the car had good speed, however a few issues in the pit stop cost us a lot of time. We fought back well, which is encouraging and to finish in fifth position is a good result.”

STRONG START FOR JB

John Bowe had a perfect start to this year’s Touring Car Masters Series with a dominant performance at Sydney Motorsport Park last month. The Doric racer started the weekend strongly and in qualifying secured pole position for the opening race. He then lead the race from start to finish to take the chequered flag ahead of rival Jim Richards. On Sunday the defending Champion dominated the field again with his Ford Mustang to win both races and remain unbeaten for the weekend. Bowe now has a commanding series lead heading into the second round in Perth. “I’m extremely pleased with how the first round went and to start the series with three race wins is an excellent result,” John Bowe said. “In any motorsport competition good people, good engines and good teamwork make it happen, and we have got all of that this year.” Bowe says the work he and his team have done on his race car since last year, has helped put his goal of winning three straight Touring Car Masters titles within reach. “My car, which I have nicknamed ‘Mustang Sally’, is better than it has ever been and it’s nice to know that you have good gear under you,” The next round of the Touring Car Masters Series will be held at Barbagallo Raceway in Perth on May 3-5.

Doric riders Jamie Stauffer and Josh Hook started their 2013 seasons for Team Honda Racing competing in the World Superbike Championship (WSBK) at Phillip Island in February. Both riders were given a wildcard entry into the World Championship opener, and they didn’t disappoint the big crowd. Stauffer finished just outside the top 10 in both races, recovering from a crash during the Superpole qualifying session. “Overall we had a good weekend at Phillip Island. At times we were quite fast against the World Superbike riders and we learned a lot about the bike,” Jamie Stauffer said. “In the end it was a fantastic experience and to finish in 15th and 13th spots in the weekend’s two races was a good result.” Team mate Josh Hook also showed positive signs ahead of the first round of the Australian Superbike Championship at Symmons Plains in Tasmania. After also recovering from a serious crash during Friday’s practice, Hook had good speed in the main race to finish in 17th position in the WSBK. “It was my first World Supersport championship race and it was an amazing experience to be competing against such experienced riders,” Josh Hook said. “I learnt so much from them and taking part in the event has opened my eyes. Obviously I would have liked to have placed better in the race, however to finish in 17th position is still a great result.”

RACER REWIND

ITM 400 2012 22

Doric racers dominated last year’s V8 Supercar Championship weekend on the streets of Hamilton in New Zealand. Will Davison won the opening race of the weekend after an impressive drive saw the FPR Falcon driver take the chequered flag ahead of reigning Champion Jamie Whincup. Davison climbed five places in the final laps of the race to take the victory in spectacular fashion. At the time Davison described the race win as one of the toughest of his 2012 season so far and also one of the most enjoyable. FPR team mate Mark Winterbottom then claimed a thrilling win in the final race on Sunday to make it a double victory for the Doric sponsored team. Winterbotton held off Whincup in a thrilling final lap, to win by less than one second and claim the Mark Porter trophy. He said the victory was a special one and winning the Mark Porter Trophy is something he will always cherish. A massive crowd of more than 110,000 people came to witness the final V8 Supercar Championship weekend in Hamilton across the three day event.

N BRID The DV8 Supercar Championship returns to ESTRIA Auckland in New Zealand this weekend for the first time in five years. The round has been held on the streets of Hamilton since 2007, however thanks to a $6.6 million upgrade of Pukekohe Park Raceway, it has returned to its northern home. The Auckland circuit has had a few changes including the addition of three new corners along what was formerly the back straight to extend it to 2.91 kilometres in length. It still remains however, a fast and free flowing track for drivers. V8 Supercar organisers have announced a new race format for this weekend, which it hopes will make it even more enjoyable for fans. There will be a unique four race format, with two 100 kilometre sprint races being held on Saturday and the same on Sunday. Going on recent form in New Zealand, Doric’s FPR drivers Will Davison and Mark Winterbottom will be hard to beat this weekend. The pair dominated last year and each claimed a race win on the streets of Hamilton. Local hope Shane Van Gisbergen will also be a driver to watch in Auckland.
