Will Davison is looking for a big points haul at this weekend’s V8 Supercar Championship weekend in Townsville, as he tries to stay in touch with leader Jamie Whincup. The Doric racer is currently 275 points behind Whincup after recording mixed results during a tough month of racing in the USA and in Darwin. A fourth place finish was Davison’s best result at the inaugural V8 Supercar Championship weekend in the USA and he also just missed out on a podium at Hidden Valley. (Darwin) “The car felt good in qualifying in Darwin, however we didn’t quite have the pace, particularly in the second race of the
6
weekend,” Will Davison said. “We made some changes over the weekend that didn’t quite work but I took a few whacks which hurt the car, and we just did what we could from there. “The team is showing good strength overall, but I just need to make sure I am the one standing on the top step in Townsville.” The Pepsi Max Crew FPR driver hasn’t stood on the podium since the V8 Supercar Championship weekend in Auckland in April. However Davison has performed well on the Townsville street circuit in the past, and is hoping this will be the weekend he strengthens his Championship challenge.
Mark Winterbottom has reached good form just in time for this weekend’s V8 Supercar Championship weekend on the streets of Townsville. The Doric racer won his first race of the season at Hidden Valley in Darwin in June, which was also his first victory in 13 months. “It was great to finish the weekend in Darwin with a win and a second place finish. I was very happy with the weekend overall in the Top End,” Mark Winterbottom said. “We had good single lap and race pace at Hidden Valley, and hopefully we can keep
that going in Townsville this weekend.” Winterbottom has moved into seventh position on the Championship standings and is now just 51 points behind fifth placed driver Fabian Coulthard. The Pepsi Max Crew FPR driver now heads to a circuit which he has had success on in the past, as he aims to close the gap to this year’s leaders. “I had a race win in Townsville in 2010 and finished on the podium last year, so it’s a track I love competing on. There’s always a great atmosphere in Northern Queensland and I can’t wait to get back there.”

BOWE WOWS EM IN DARWIN
10
John Bowe’s impressive start to this year’s Touring Car Masters Series continued at Hidden Valley in Darwin last month. The Doric ambassador recorded a pole position and three race victories in a dominant display of racing. It’s the second year in a row the defending champion has won all three races in the Top End. “It was a perfect weekend in Darwin, with pole and three out of three wins – it doesn’t get much better than that,” an excited John Bowe said. “My car ‘Mustang Sally’ was great all weekend and our special tyre strategy helped us in race three. We also finished the weekend without a scratch on ‘Sally’, which is very important heading into the next round.” The impressive performance in Darwin saw Bowe increase his Series lead to 32 points over rival Jim Richards. The Touring Car Masters Series now heads to Queensland Raceway in Ipswich for three races on July 27 and 28. It’s a track which Bowe dominated last year, with three race victories. “Everything went well for me at Queensland Raceway in 2012, so hopefully I can get the same result again and record a clean sweep of race wins.”

THR: DETERMINATION THE KEY AT QR
12
Doric Team Honda Racing Riders Jamie Stauffer and Josh Hook showed impressive determination at the third round of the Australian Superbike Championship at Queensland Raceway in Ipswich last month. Stauffer, who rode with severe pain after a recent injury to his pelvis, recorded two fifth place finishes in the weekend’s races. “It was a tough weekend for me and I did everything I could to ensure I didn’t waste the opportunity to gain more points for the Championship. My strength just wasn’t there this weekend because of my recent accident, however to come fifth in both races shows the strength of my Honda CBR1000RR,” Jamie Stauffer said. Team mate Hook claimed his first podium on a Superbike after crossing the line in second position in race two on the Queensland track. “It was fantastic to take my first podium in the Superbike class and overall I was really happy with my performance at Queensland Raceway. My lap times are improving and to be able to start from the front row in just our second event on the Superbike this year is great,” Josh Hook said. Hook has now moved into fourth position on the Championship standings while Jamie Stauffer is in fifth spot. The next two rounds of the Australian Superbike Championship will be held at Sydney Motorsport Park on August 1 to 4.

TOWNSVILLE 400 2012 RACER
REWIND
22
D
The 2012 V8 Supercar Championship weekend in Townsville featured mixed results for Doric drivers Will Davison and Mark Winterbottom. Davison endured a frustrating race on the Saturday, with a stacking incident during a pit stop seeing the FPR driver finish in 12th position. He managed to bounce back in Sunday’s race and record an impressive third place result. It was the 12th time the Ford driver recorded a podium finish in the opening half of last season. FPR Team mate Mark Winterbottom finished both of the weekend’s races in Townsville last year inside the top five, with a second place his best result in the Sunday race. The good performance saw Winterbottom move into second position on the Championship standings and signal his intentions as a strong title contender. However the weekend in Townsville belonged to Jamie Whincup who dominated the 2.86 kilometre street circuit. Whincup won both of the weekend’s races as he stretched his Championship lead to 100 points over Winterbottom.
23
TOWNSVILLE 400 PREVIEW 24
Weekend Format- 2x 200km Races, one Saturday, one Sunday 13 turns, 2.86km long First race meeting was held in 2009 This weekend will see cars given 12x hard and 8x soft tyres for the two races Average speed 144km/h, top speed 266km/h
The Townsville circuit is a favourite for drivers and fans because of its fast main straight and plenty of passing opportunities. One of only five street circuits on the V8 Supercar calendar, Townsville always provides entertaining racing and this weekend looks like it will be no different. Doric racer Will Davison will be the driver to look out for as he tries to bounce back from a frustrating month of racing in Texas and Darwin. The Pepsi Max Crew FPR driver has proven to be fast in qualifying on the Townsville track, recording a pole position last year. He will be looking to turn that into good race pace this weekend as he aims to record a race
victory, which will keep him in the hunt for this year’s Championship. Team mate Mark Winterbottom knows how to win on the streets of Townsville, having won a race on this circuit in 2010. Given his recent success in Darwin, recent fast race pace and success on the Northern Queensland track in the past, Winterbottom could also prove hard to stop this weekend. However the driver to beat again is defending Champion Jamie Whincup, who has dominated the Townsville track in recent years. Whincup has won five races over the last four years, which is more than any other driver on this circuit.
