MEDIA GUIDE ROUND 7 BATHURST
CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE Big fields, the best young talent in Australia, a rich history of developing the champions of the future and the support of one of the world’s truly iconic automotive brands ... there’s a lot to celebrate about Formula Ford in 2012. As a second generation competitor, having raced Formula Ford in the UK during the ‘80s, I have had a long affinity and emotional connection with the category that is so highly regarded globally. Formula Ford today remains the perfect category to hone driving skills, learn the basics of race car engineering, and make an impression on the road to a career in the sport that we all love. I am proud to be Chairman of the Formula Ford Board and look forward to working closely with my fellow Directors to make sure Formula Ford remains the premier junior development category in Australia. Rod Barrett Chairman Australian Formula Ford Board

WELCOME Welcome to the seventh round of the 2012 Australian Formula Ford Championship at Bathurst. This season has seen new opportunities for a young group of drivers, with some familiar faces joined by a fresh new crop of rookies, all looking to prove their worth. It’s set to be an exciting battle to see who’ll come out on top. The championship will continue to travel to some of Australia’s premier motorsport venues – including the famed Mount Panorama, Bathurst, for the first time since 2004 – while remaining Australia’s and the world’s premier junior development category. 2006 saw the category’s most significant change since its beginnings in Australia back in 1969, with the introduction of an all-new Ford Fiesta 1600cc engine. Since then, Formula Ford has gone from strength to strength. HISTORY OF FORMULA FORD Formula Ford was established in Great Britain in 1967, as a cost effective starting point for young hopefuls beginning a career in motor racing. Since then, Formula Ford has rapidly grown to become the world’s premier junior development category. Formula Ford is the accepted proving ground for the nation’s champions, on a local and international level. Its links with this country go back to the original series in the UK, the 1968 Guards Championship, which was won in an outstanding fashion by young Australian driver, Tim Schenken. The first Australian Formula Ford race was held at Sandown Raceway in 1969, won by Richard Knight in an Elfin 600, a precursor to his victory the following year in the inaugural Australian Formula Ford series. Since those early days many of the world’s top drivers have come through the ranks of Formula Ford to score major international successes. No less than eight Formula One champions have come from the stables of Formula Ford: Nigel Mansell, Ayrton Senna, Emerson Fittipaldi, James Hunt, Jody Scheckter, Michael Schumacher, Damon Hill, Jacques Villeneuve and Mikka Hakkinen have all competed in the junior racing category. The international pedigree of the Australian Championship is also alive with Grand Prix winner Mark Webber who, having driven with Minardi, Jaguar Racing and Williams in Formula 1, continues his career with Red Bull Racing in 2012. 2001 graduate, Will Power, is 6
another international star, this year racing for the Penske IndyCar team in America. Now, a new breed of Australian youngsters are aiming to follow in Webber and Power’s wheeltracks. Locally, the Australian V8 Supercar Championship is rich with Formula Ford champions, including Russell Ingall (1990), Craig Lowndes (1993), Jason Bright (1995), Will Davison (2001), Garth Tander (1997), Jamie Whincup (2002) and David Reynolds (2004). In 2011, Nick Percat won the Bathurst 1000 with Tander, just two years after winning the Australian Formula Ford Championship. In addition to the national championship, state series championships are held in most Australian states, both as a cost-effective introduction to the sport for new drivers from karting and Formula Vee, and for vintage Formula Ford competition. More than ever, the formative skills learnt at Formula Ford level prepare emerging young drivers for successful careers, both locally and internationally.

CAMS RISING STAR PROGRAM After a successful pilot season in 2004, the CAMS Rising Star Program commences its seventh full season in 2012. The Program aims to identify and fast-track the development of young Australian drivers from the junior competition ranks to national and international competition through clearly defined and supported pathways. OBJECTIVES - To provide a structure to facilitate the development of racing drivers from sprint/super karting and other lower levels of competition to national open wheel racing (e.g. Formula Ford); - To work with the Australian Motor Sport Foundation (AMSF) to provide a structure to facilitate the development of racing drivers from national open wheel racing to the pinnacle of international open wheel racing (i.e. Formula 1); and - To increase participation in motor sport through clearly defined and supported pathways GENERAL PROGRAM OUTLINE In summary, the 2012 Program will see the drivers receive the following: - A number of trips to the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra; - For the state level nominees only, participation in an on-track driver evaluation day to be conducted in December 2012; - The provision of other support services during 2012 including the allocation of a suitable mentor; - A partially subsidised national racing and testing program (approximately $45,000 - $50,000); - A CAMS circuit racing competition licence

FORMULA FORD GRADUATES “Formula Ford is a great category to progress to after karting. You don’t need the latest chassis- whatever Formula Ford you drive teaches you how a racing car works with suspension and gives you the chance to experiment with different set-ups on the car. “I still think that Formula Ford was very good for my driving and the challenge of driving on treaded tyres - which are not particularly userfriendly - was awesome. We’ve got a great selection of nice tracks to race on in Australia and I have some very fond memories of racing Formula Ford there.” Mark Webber, 1994-5 Australian Formula Ford competitor, Winner Formula Ford Festival (UK), current driver Red Bull Racing “I spent three years racing Formula Fords, it’s the next step up from go karts and it’s where I learnt how to drive a gear boxed race car, it also taught me about racing with other drivers and slip streaming. “The Formula Ford category is a low cost form of motorsport and therefore accessible to more drivers, and because the cars are so similar, racing is always close and very dependant on driving skills rather than the amount of money poured into a car.” Craig Lowndes, 1993 Australian Formula Ford Champion, 1996, `98, `99 V8 Supercar Champion, five-time Bathurst winner “Formula Ford is an international formula. It’s where the best young drivers around the world compete to show their skills. If you can win in Formula Ford, then chances are you have what it takes to go to the top.” “It’s also a great training ground. Formula Ford teaches you to set up a car without wings and drive it to the absolute limit.” Marcos Ambrose, 1997 Formula Ford competitor, 2004, ’05 V8 Supercar Champion, now a winner in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup

WHAT IS FORMULA FORD Formula Ford is the world’s premier junior development category in motor sport and in 2006 underwent its most significant change ever. An all-new Ford Fiesta 1600cc engine was introduced for the 2006 season, replacing the Ford Cortina and Escort based Kent engine that had been used by the category for over 30 years. With Ford extending its official support to the category, the new Fiesta powered Formula Fords will continue to be the major source for future Australian motor racing champions. An open wheel racing car, a Formula Ford complies with stringent rules designed to reduce costs for newcomers to the sport, and to allow every driver to compete on his or her own merits. Every Formula Ford is constructed from a light-weight tubular space frame designed to maintain the highest levels of driver safety. Aerodynamic modifications, such as wings and spoilers, are prohibited. A number of manufacturers, both local and international, build the basic Formula Ford body and chassis, the most common being the French Mygale and Australia’s Spectrum chassis, along with a few Van Diemen and Stealth chassis. Each vehicle is powered by the ‘control’ Ford Fiesta 1600cc, 100ps DOHC, lightweight aluminium, four cylinder engine for Australian competition. Tuned to develop more than 125 horsepower, Formula Fords reach speeds in excess of 250 km/h. The key to the category’s long-term success is the uniquely level playing field of the equipment and chassis, allowing differences in skill to become the sole factor separating drivers. The relative parity between the vehicles also serves to guarantee the category’s reputation for some of the most exciting and nail-bitingly close racing to be seen on any Australian or international circuit.
13
KEY ELEMENTS OF A FORMULA FORD Formula Ford racing cars are designed to comply with a strict set of rules which are revised annually. The rules for Formula Ford racing cars ensure that costs are limited and that driver skill becomes the major factor in achieving success. The Chassis Tubular space frame construction confined to specific dimensions. Exotic materials are prohibited. Constructors aim to maximise torsional rigidity and minimize weight, while maintaining the highest level of driver safety. The Tyres A grooved racing tyre is used for optimum grip under all weather conditions. The type/brand and compound are specified, ensuring tyre longevity and performance parity. The Engine 1600cc, 100ps DOHC four-cylinder Ford Fiesta engine, sealed on cylinder head and front and rear crankshaft seal covers. Tuned to develop 125 bhp at 7,000rpm. All components and measurements are specified and the Formula benefits from the worldwide parts support provided by the Ford Motor Company The Suspension Full racing car suspension ensures maximum tyre grip at various cornering speeds. Chassis balance is adjustable and controlled by damper, spring and anti-roll bar combinations. The Gearbox Limited to four forward gears. Ratios can be changed to suit various circuits and conditions. The Brakes Four-wheel disc brakes have independent front and rear activation. Front/rear bias is adjustable. Safety Features These include chassis requirements, roll over hoop, foot protection and material specifications. Driver’s harness and fire extinguisher, etc, must comply with CAMS requirements. Aerodynamic Devices Not allowed. Grip generated by aerodynamics is limited to the combination of chassis design/setup and tyre grip.

FORMULA FORD CHASSIS Mygale In 2011, Mygale added another championship win to its records through Cameron Waters, reviving the successes of Luke Youlden (2000), Greg Ritter (1999), Tim Blanchard (2007) and Nick Percat (2009). With a distinctive-looking nose and large side-pods, the French-built Mygale offers high levels of control and straight-line speed, which were the keys to its title winning pace. Spectrum Spectrum is made by Melbourne-based manufacturer Borland Racing Developments (BRD) and is the current reigning manufacturer champion. The lowslung Spectrum produces arguably the best cornering and handling performance of any chassis in the category on fast, tight circuits. Stealth Stealth re-entered the championship in the 2010 season run by V8 Supercar driver Garth Tander’s Tandersport operation.

The Brainchild Foundation was established in 2010 by Medical Professionals and dedicated parents and friends to heighten awareness surrounding the huge burden that brain and spinal cord tumours cause to children and their families. The Foundation supports the children suffering from these conditions and provides help and education where their families need it the most. For more information, head to www.brainchild.org. au
PORSCHE PATHWAY Former Formula Ford Champion Steven Richards will look to help young drivers move through the ranks with a new initiative involving his Carrera Cup outfit in 2012. Richards will give this year’s Formula Ford Champion a test in his Laser Plumbing and Electrical Porsche as a prize. Porsche Cars Australia have supported the opportunity, and if that driver then join the Porsche City Index Carrera Cup Australia as a fulltime competitor in 2013, Porsche will cover their participation fee in full. “Porsche Carrera Cup provides all competitors with equal equipment and has provided a path for drivers to move forward into other types of motorsport including V8 Supercars,” Richards said. “I’m delighted to be able to provide an opportunity that helps give a young driver a look into a professionally run, world class, one make championship.”
FUJITSU COOL DRIVER For the second year, Fujitsu General will back a group of young drivers through its ‘Cool Driver’ program. Along with seven karters and two State Formula Ford drivers, three drivers from the Australian Formula Ford Championship were selected for 2012; Shae Davies, Garry Jacobson and Jack LeBrocq. All three will financial support, plus mentoring from leading drivers, along with media and personal training. From the three, the top finisher in this year’s championship will receive a V8 Supercar test with Fujitsu Racing / Garry Rogers Motorsport at the end of the season, as completed by Cameron Waters in 2011.
