UV-C explained

Our disinfectant systems utilise the UV-C spectrum, the most lethal UV wavelength for unwanted microorganisms. UV-C light causes permanent damage to microorganisms by penetrating their cell walls. This either destroys them or leaves them unable to reproduce, ensuring excellent water quality.

’nBreë glimlag pryk op die gesig van Alex Wray van AJ Boerdery naby Tarlton in Gauteng se gesig sedert sy Ocmis-trekspuit van Irrigation Unlimited sorg dat sy kalwers hulleself trommeldik vreet aan ՚n oorvloed voedsame, sappige groen gras.

Alex se boerdery is hoofsaaklik ՚n beesboerdery met ՚n voerkraal, maar hulle plant ook elke jaar 200 ha mielies vir kuilvoer in die voerkraal en 100 ha aangeplante weiding.

Alex se Bovelders lewer ongeveer 500 tot 600 kalwers per jaar, maar vir die voerkraal koop hulle enige goeie beesras se ligte kalfies aan. “Ons probeer altyd so 2 000 in die voerkraal hou en so 1 500 op die agtergrond,” verduidelik Alex. Hulle koop ook skape in vir vetmaak, meestal Ile de France, Merino’s of ander vleisrasse.

“Toe ek die som maak om net uit die voerkraal ՚n inkomste te verdien, het ek besef dit kan nie so werk nie, want ՚n mens was as prysnemer te afhanklik van die markprys. Ons het kuilvoer begin plant omdat dit ons grootste energiebron is. Daarmee kon ons 60% minder voer aankoop en so ons koste verminder, maar daar was steeds plek om koste te besnoei. Dit is toe dat ons die ander plaas vir besproeiing aangekoop het, en eers na die hoëdruk en later ultra-hoëdruk weidingstelsels beweeg het,” vertel hy.

Die vermoë om soveel beeste per jaar te kan bemark is te danke aan die Ocmistrekspuite van Irrigation Unlimited wat die boerdery aangeskaf het. “Ons het twee R1/1-75/220 Ocmis-spuite wat die ultra-hoëdruk weidingstelsel na nuwe hoogtes geneem het. Die een trekspuit kan voor loop en natmaak, dan vreet die beeste in die middel en agter loop die ander spuit om die weiding weer te laat groei,” verduidelik Alex.

Anders as ՚n spilpunt wat omwaai wanneer die storms by Alex-hulle opsteek, bly die Ocmis-trekspuite staan.

Om die trekspuit te beheer, word sy spoed gestel volgens ՚n tabel wat wys hoeveel mm water teen watter spoed gelewer word. As jy meer water wil spuit, verander jy die spoed met ՚n hoër rat wat hom stadiger laat loop, of ՚n groter spuitpunt.

“Ek sal definitief hierdie Ocmis-trekspuite aanbeveel, veral vir boere wat die voordele van ՚n ultra-hoëdruk weidingstelsel ten volle wil geniet,” verklaar Alex. "Tobie se naverkopediens is uitstekend. Veral aan die begin was ek onseker oor hoe om die tabelle te gebruik, maar hy het altyd gehelp. Hy het ook verskeie kere deurgery om seker te maak ons kom reg.”

Alex se pad met Irrigation Unlimited het begin by NAMPO in 2018, en in 2019 is die spuite afgelewer. “Die Ocmisspuite is bekostigbaar en ons somme het gewys ons kan in twee belê om te kyk of dit in ons stelsel inpas sonder om ՚n fortuin te betaal.” Die lae onderhoudskoste is vir Alex-hulle ՚n bonus.

“Ek wou gehad het hy moet ՚n baan van 250 m lank kan besproei, maar hy spuit reeds 35 tot 40 meter wyd. Toe besluit ons op die 220-m spuit,” vertel hy. “Ek het Tobie van Irrigation Unlimited gesê wat die waterbehoefte is en hy het die res van die tegniese vereistes bepaal en ՚n 75-mm pyp voorgestel.” Elke spuit kan aangepas word volgens jou behoeftes.

Die voordeel van die Ocmis-stelsel is dat dit verskuifbaar is. Jy kan dit skuif na waar dit nodig is — selfs ՚n ander plaas! “՚n Klein trekker verskuif die spuit moeiteloos,” voeg hy by.

Die masjien self is wateraangedrewe en gebruik geen elektrisiteit nie. Daar is ՚n pompkamer waar Alex-hulle ՚n motor met veranderlike spoed (VSA) het om die lewering van water vanaf die besproeiingsdam na die trekspuite te beheer.

Die resultate wat hierdie trekspuite lewer, het Alex beïndruk. “In alle eerlikheid het ek aanvanklik getwyfel oor my besluit, maar na net ՚n week het ek erken ek sal nooit weer iets anders gebruik nie.”

Omdat die Ocmis-stelsel verskuifbaar is, kan Alex minder bekommerd wees oor diefstal. “Die Ocmis-eenhede kan ons toesluit in die skuur wanneer ons vir ՚n naweek weggaan of selfs wanneer hulle nie gebruik word tydens die reënseisoen nie. Dit het ook nie onderdele wat diewe aanlok nie,” verduidelik Alex.

Hierdie twee spuite werk alreeds drie jaar hard vir AJ Boerdery. “In die tyd het hulle nog nie een maal gebreek nie en Tobie moes nog nie een keer herstelwerk doen nie. Hy het ons net

Die ultra-hoëdruk weidingstelsel werk deur die beeste in klein afgekampte gebiede op die aangeplante weiding in te jaag. Die beeste vreet dan die deel skoon voordat hulle na die volgende ry geskuif word. Die skoongevrete deel word dan weer met die Ocmis-trekspuit besproei.
