ABOUT MFW MEDIA FUTURE WEEK During the Media Future Week, 150 students, teachers and lecturers of Universities of Applied Science educations media & entertainment, ICT, media & arts a.o. delve into the future of media. In a four-day-12+hours-a-day program we look at the economic, technical and social impact of media, and the way in which this influences us as media consumers, and as media professionals. Purpose Media Future Week’s purpose is to bring participants to the next level in their field and enforce the relationship between education and media industry. We want to shape the cooperation between students, teachers, professors, professionals and the media industry. To this end multidisciplinary teams work on outside cases reflecting trends in future society.
IT'S ALL ABOUT CO-CREATION Media Because media plays such an important role in todays’ modern society, cases that are worked on look at the crossover between media and a relevant societal topic like ageing, energy, mobility etc. The cases come from leading organisations that want to reflect on their solutions from the viewpoint of future media professionals, to improve their offerings in 5-10 years time.
Final product As a learning experience, the process is at least as important as the final product. The teams are supported throughout the week by presentations of big names from home and abroad. The keynote coaches are available for reflection. A lot of attention is given to team coaching and program preparation. No traditional colleges but inspirational brainstorm sessions that will challenge the participants to achieve the best results. Moreover, every team has a facilitator who makes sure that everything will run smoothly and individual members can showcase their passion and ambitwion. All together, the teams will generate an experience that is remembered long after the event.

PARTICIPANTS ALUMNI Every year, MFW consists of ten teams of students working on their case solutions. In the teams, the students are working together with o students from different studies and different Universities of Applied Sciences. Despite their different backgrounds, they have one thing in common: they’ve been selected by their university as the top 1% students of their study. This means that they excel in their classes, either by their results or by their attitude and motivation. Participants Most participants are in the second or third year of their education (see infographic). One of the MFW teams consist of lecturers only. They participate in a separate team but are following the same program as the students. Number of participants per year of their education - MFW14

PROGRAM MEDIA FUTURE WEEK Media Future Week program is described as a rollercoaster ride to the future. The program is very intense – every day from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. the engage in a program with 10 world renowned speakers, 50 hours of co-creation program, design-loops, break-out spaces and workshops. Media Future Week has a different theme every year that reflects the trends in the media landscape, like ‘media responsibility’ and ‘Designing for Society’. MFW Studios Located at the Media Park, MFW is in the heart of the Dutch Media Industry. The keynote speeches are held in the beautiful theatre of the Institute of Sound and Vision (Beeld en Geluid). The work spaces are located in two studios nearby. One studio consists of the team spaces, where the teams work co-create. It has a very industrial character. Every teams has it’s one space that they can furnish in their own style. At the end of the week, the team spaces are decorated with clotheslines with posters, post-its and balloons. The other studio is a serious playground where participants can relax, have fun or try out different machines. The studio is decorated with TV decors, lounge area’s and a Pop-up Lab. In the Pop-up lab they can experiment with 3D printers, prototyping tools and wearables. The first MFW editions took place in Almere, where we also created several workings and relaxing spaces.
Day 1 Monday is an exciting day where the participants will meet their team members, facilitator and case partner for the first time. The focus of the day is Technology. The first keynote speaker provide the participants with a perspective about how the future would look like. After the first brainstorm sessions, the teams head outside for the Media Park Safari. They visit companies at the Media Park, like broadcasters and interactive media companies, that show them around and tell them where they are working on. After diner, we invite inspiring tech-speakers to give the teams inspiration and demonstrate that (almost) nothing is impossible. They talk about iBeacons, 3D printing, Google Glass and Quantified Self for example.

PROGRAM MEDIA FUTURE WEEK Day 2 Tuesday is Future day, where we focus on future perspectives. An international expert will provide a keynote speech on the theme of the week. After his/her speech, the keynote speaker joins the teams for the rest of the day to coach them with their cases. In the afternoon the teams prepare themselves for an exciting session: Dragons’ Den! Four media professionals hear the teams pitch their ideas and provide them with feedback. This feedback moment is a very important step in the iterative approach of the week. It is the first serious test of the newly developed ideas. Rinse and repeat.
Day 3 The third day is devoted to finding a business model: economics Wednesday. An important part of the ideas being developed at Media Future Week is the underlying business model. The outcome maybe financial, but societal benefits count just as much. An international keynote speaker introduces the teams to the world of business models. Wednesday afternoon is programmed with workshops business modeling, pecha kucha, visualisation and prototyping. We have 3D printers and prototyping tools to visualise the concepts. For most teams, this is a very creative afternoon were concepts become concrete.

PROGRAM MEDIA FUTURE WEEK Day 4 Thursday is presentation day. The morning to prepare the final presentations and in the afternoon: showtime! After the teams upload their final presentations, we invite a young entrepreneur to energize the teams with their successful story on their company. Even though MFW is over in a few hours, we hope this speech inspires the participants to take the ideas to the next level in the months after MFW. With the summer and perhaps the end of their study coming up, we advise them to work out the details of your ideas and make them come true!
Finishing In the afternoon, it is time for the teams to present their concept to their case partner. The teams will come up with surprising ideas, worked out in creative presentations. Beautiful pictures and drawings, self-made videos and sometimes even some acting on stage. The case partners go home with a well-thought concept and a dozen ideas. The participant go home with a lot of new knowledge on the media future, a toolkit of co-creation tools, an expanded network of contacts and a lot of cool experiences. An experience to remember!

HOW TO PARTICIPATE Universities of Applied Science The Media Future Week is organized in cooperation with ten or more Universities of Applied Science in the Netherlands. They select their best students (and lecturers) to participate in Media Future Week and support us with the organization of the event. During the preparation of the Media Future Week, we maintain contact with the participating universities about the theme, speakers, number of participating students and possibilities to embed the Media Future Week in a broader honours program. In the past editions we gained experience on howto expand the MFW experience in a way that more students and lecturers in your university can profit from the program. Case partners The MFW wants to create media innovations that are relevant to society. Each year we boost the professional and personal development of the top 1% upcoming media professionals from 10 Universities of Applied Sciences. We equip them with the knowledge, tools and insights so they can make a difference. The teams are working on real business cases during the week. Therefore, MFW is looking for open minded case partners that feed the event and the teams with their context, a concept for 2025. The intensive week asks for relevant case partners that dare participants to challenge and experiment. Case partners want to define the media future and make a difference, and are thereby open to collaborate with members of the MFW to grow together and learn. Be surprised by the ideas of young talent!
Professionals Professionals are welcome to join the keynote speeches of Media Future Week. We invite several international speakers to talk at Media Future Week, like Gerd Leonhard, Scott Smith, Seth Shapiro and Marian Salzman to name a few keynote speakers from the past. You can join these sessions for free! We are also organizing special Business Modelling sessions for professionals on Economics Wednesday. Furthermore we enthusiastically invite professionals to help the teams generate new ideas during feedback moments or the Media Park Safari. Would you like to know more about ways to participate? Do not hesitate to contact us for further details via info@mediafutureweek.nl!
