Thursday 20 May The lunch talk we had at the Club on Thursday
20 May was very interesting. Mr Gerald Heng, a Singaporean who was posted to Nepal by the Singaporean International Foundation, presented us with a detailed account on the making of the popular pashmina shawl.
Wool from the changra mountain goats are spun into yarns for the shawls. The slides showed the various stages of making these shawls from the weaving to the dyeing, to the eventual twisting of the tassels at the ends of the shawls.
After the slide presentation, Mr Heng informed us of the orphanage which he has opened in Nepal. Proceeds from the sale of his shawls will go towards this. I thought his dedication towards these children is very admirable. The afternoon ended with the Club ladies
modelling the various shawls which his company, Angels Anonymous makes. This indeed was
the highlight of the talk. Mr Heng has Incorporated the local ikat and nyonya designs into his shawls, His collection was truly unique and very beautiful. Torat Doshi

Wine Section's
Blind Tasting Friday 18 June 2004 An excellent turnout of about 30 wine lovers launched the first
event of the newly-formed Wine Section of the F&B department last month.
Leading the evening's presentation of Cabernet Sauvignon from six countries - France, Italy, Spain, Chile, Australia and the USA - was Tan Ying Hsien, a most knowledgeable and unusual wine connoisseur.
Mr Tan is a lawyer by training who admits he "mis-spent his time qualifying for the English bar studying wine labels, wine bottles and their contents in preference to the finer points of jurisprudence." He has been studying the serious consumption of wine for over
20 years and is a member of several wine fraternities including the Commanderie de Bordeaux and the Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin.
It was a most enjoyable evening for all the participants, thanks to Chef Carsten, himself a wine enthusiast, and staffers Callista and Zaini, and the F&B team.
The next function of the Wine Section is Comparative Wine
Tasting on Thursday 15 July (see page 10). Have you joined the Wine Section yet? Contact Callista at the F&B Dept at 6739 4176.

Father's Day Lunch Sunday 20 June 2004 An excellent turnout of over 130 members
and their children came for the special buffet lunch to honour their Dads on Father's Day 2004. Like Mother's Day a month earlier,
this occasion is always most popular and the Churchill Room a perfect setting for that wonderful family gathering.
