Talent of a different kind comes to the Club

Phuket - And My Haircut I wake up suddenly about 8 am on Boxing Day morning. I blearily recollect a sharp repetitive sound, perhaps a knock on the door. I subside into semi-consciousness, only to be
re-awakened by the same rattling sound, this time localized to my bedside table. My wife Evelyn also wakes and asks me what's going I tell her my table is inexplicably wobbling, it stops and my thoughts turn to breakfast
and our plans for recreation in this delightful beach resort of Dusit Laguna Phuket. I get up to clean my teeth and am surprised to see my image in the mirror swaying. Then I feel the building oscillating. I call out to Evelyn that it
must be an earthquake. She says it can't be - earthquakes don't happen in Thailand. But she's convinced when I point out that the chandelier light is rocking madly. 1 peer out of the window. All seems peaceful - the gardens are sunlit and Caucasians are already bagging their recliners round the pool determined to accumulate yet more solar skin damage. The local stall holders are setting up their booths at the edge of the sandy beach. By now the weird shaking has subsided.

Fortunately, despite dire warnings to the contrary, no further tidal waves appear. The Hotel staff cope admirably and later in the day even manage to get a hot meal together for us.

many bodies. We were told to head for high ground and find what shelter we could. Panic
was setting in as people thought another wave was coming and there was lots of shouting
and screaming. We found an abandoned hut and 'slept' there. At dawn we made our way to the centre of the island where the helicopters were coming in taking off the injured. Ferries began to arrive to evacuate people to Krabi or Phuket and so eventually we got on a ferry to Phuket. We
obviously had lost everything so when we arrived in Phuket we went to the Swis-s
Embassy who were coordinating police reob^^ etc. We stayed with our friends Richard and Joleen Austin while we sorted out police reports
and flights. We can't thank them enough for their fantastic hospitality. Can you imagine the eight of us turning up on their doorstep with
only swimming costumes and T-shirts? They were brilliant!!!
Unfortunately, we couldn't get new passports in Phuket and had to arrange to go to Bangkok. We were so impressed by the British Embassy's kindness and efficiency, spent New Year's Eve at the reciprocal club from Tanglin Our whole family were spending Christmas,
Neil's birthday on 26th, and New Year on Koh Phi Phi. We are all scuba divers and arranged to do our first dive on 26 December leaving at 8.00 am. We went to a small island off Phi

Myanmar The silence Is the first thing we noticed. A soft silence of people going about their business in a certain rhythm. Yes, the quiet of Inle Lake is punctuated by the sound of diesel engines and the villagers along the Ayeyarwady are increasing the production of goods for sale; but it seems as if the pace of life continues as it has for years tied to land and the rivers. There is harmony. The colours and contours of the land and
waterways are what we noticed next. The landscape is open and lovely. Whether it is the plains of Bagan or the silhouette of the U Bein Bridge, it is a feast for the eye. But it is the people of Myanmar - children, farmers, merchants, monks and nuns that
leave the lasting impression of warmth, resilience, energy and a bit of sass. Text and photography by Mary Leadbetter

These classes Incorporate several styles of progressive Jazz technique and dance style that you've seen on MTV. A dance cardiovascular class that will take you through a warm up and stretch routine to increase your flexibility and technique, followed by basic Jazz and street dance movements. In the second half of the class, you will learn a dance combination of current MTV dance moves. A Jazzed up and funky way to workout.
Tap Dance
Tap evolved from European step dances like the "jig" and "clog dancing" as well as a variety of African step dances that were loosely labelled
"Juba" dances. These dances evolved throughout the years into what we now know as American Tap Dance. Here at the Club, our instructors teach all the fundamentals of Tap. Alongside learning tap, one also develops fitness, movement and rhythm. This encourages the enjoyment of learning the art of Tap Dance. Ballet
Ballet For Tots from learning some basic dance steps as well as how to stand tall and walk on their toes like princesses. It's a fun and enjoyable way, doing little bunny jumps or skipping around the room, while being introduced to the beauty and grace of Ballet. Preliminary/Pre-Primary Ballet students will learn simple and basic steps in a fun, but educational class. Learning steps and exercises necessary to develop their skills, and by using a wide range of music

event. Fortunately, the weather held up well unlike in previous years, so we have something to write about! This year, it was the ladies' turn for the first time to provide Inspiring leadership. I-Yu, Sylvia, Patricia and Esther captained the four teams appropriately named Santa, Silverbell etc. Everyone's spirits were jolly high that day, and that showed through in the tennis too. Even Club President Alan Jones, who does not regularly play tennis at The Tanglin Club,joined us. He seemed to have been bitten by the tennis bug that day, no doubt, largely attributed to Captain MC Cheong's infectious war cries and fist pumps after making lunging crunch volleys. That high and adrenaline rush was indeed
After the tennis, we adjourned to the Raffles Room for a sumptuous dinner and played games that completely took us out of our tennis comfort zone. The beer-drinking and golf-putting contest humbled our Club's best players and threw up some unexpected winners!
