ATTHE HELM COMMODORE'S MESSAGE Dear Fellow Members

By the time you get this magazine, you would have known that we have a new General Manager on board. I want to take this opportunity to formally welcome Dr Matthew Yap to the Club. DrVap comes to the Club

with excellent credentials. He is a graduate of the Nanyang Technological University and has vast work experiences, ranging from the Singapore Armed Forces and the Airport Auxiliary Police Force where he was Deputy Commander, to being part of the management team staging the inaugural Formula One night races in 2008 and the Singapore Airshow, Asia's largest aviation and defence event, earlier this year.

Our Annual General Meeting this year will be held on Friday 25 June 2010 at the Quarterdeck (Multi-Purpose Hall) at 7.00pm. This is an especially important AGM on two counts. One, it will be my last AGM as your Commodore and I shall be giving a detailed report of my stewardship for the past three years. May I thank you all for this high honour and the great support you have given me and the Committee in helping our Club move forward.

Second, and perhaps even more important, is the fact that the coming AGM will discuss the Club's Development Plan that was first presented to the membership at last year's AGM. At the time of writing this message, there are still some loose ends that need to be finalised. If this can be done

in the next week or two, the Main Committee may call for an EOGM to discuss the Development Plan and seek your approval to proceed with the construction of the multi-tier boat storage building. Accommodation Wings and other facilities.

If, however, the timing should prove inadequate for an EOGM, we shall take up the Development agenda at the AGM itself.

After more than two years of extraordinary effort by a number of people, I am excited to report that the Heritage Book is finally ready for publication.

Long-time member Peter Dunlop is the author and he has finished his manuscript just recently. The printing is scheduled to begin in early May, with a book launch date set for Saturday 19 June 2010. A gala dinner to celebrate the 10th year anniversary of our current clubhouse and the launching of the Heritage Book is being planned at the Club, with our Patron, President SR Nathan as the Guest-of-Honour.

Finally, I want to also mention that the Commodore's Day 2010 will take place also on Saturday 19 June, with lots of fun activities for the whole family. Do join us in all these events, with details reported elsewhere in this magazine.

ATTHE HELM GENERAL MANAGER'S MESSAGE Dear Members,

It is with great honour and pride to serve you as General Manager of the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club. As I settled into leading the management team and staff of this historic club, I am encouraged to see several areas of improvement initiated by the RSYC Committee during the last quarter.

Amongst the many, our Food & Beverage outlets have introduced a new menu spread as part of our continual effort to encourage stronger member patronage to The Bridge and The Wharf.

In this issue of the RSYC magazine, we have intensified promotional offers for various F&B spreads, suitable for the busy executives during lunches, or friends and families during the evenings and weekends. We have introduced the Commodore's Table, a re-invent of the 1934 menu of

the RSYC RowingTeam at $680 for 10, for a limited time only. I encourage members to visit with friends and families to experience exquisite dining in the relaxing ambience of an award-winning clubhouse by the sea.

RSYC is recognised as a reputable institution of excellent standing in Singapore's vibrant sailing and marina industry. The Club has reciprocity with nearly 100 prestigious marinas and yacht clubs around the world.

Our Membership Department is gearing up preparations in tandem with the phased developmental plans of the Club.

The RSYC management and staff have adjusted to a leaner operating structure. Recovering rapidly from a challenging year in 2009, the Club will continue to undergo significant organisation right-sizing to meet the operating budget set by the RSYC Committee, and improve service standards to new heights.

In the run up for the next quarter, the RSYC management has re-configured themselves into several working groups to organise the Commodore's Day and the Heritage Book Launch in June; the RSYC Regatta in July/August; and the RSYC Charity Golf In October.

Lastly, on the development front, the master plan endorsed by members will be rolled out progressively in stages, to avoid any inconvenience to members. Additionally, we hope you will enjoy other infrastructure improvements we have made, and are undertaking to serve your needs better at the Club. From refurbishing the Food & Beverage outlets, reception counter to painting of the Club's internal and external walls and fixtures, these are all undertaken to provide you with a more pleasant and relaxing experience on your every visit to RSYC. Head Sous Chef Jessie Lee Jessie Lee, the Head Sous Chef at the Bridge Restaurant, has been with us since 26 June 2000.

Prior to arriving to the Club, Jessie was the Demi Chef for St Gregory's at the Grand Plaza Hotel. She has also held positions at hotels in Malaysia.

Jessie and her team have been offering The Bridge something very different with their dishes, carrying a unique slant inspired by their formidable experience in contemporary and inventive cuisine.

by Lawrence Chantran As part of the exclusivity protocol re-introduced to Republic of Singapore Yacht Club in April 2009, the Security Department has been conducting studies to improve the access control

With a strong heritage and tradition behind the 184-year-olcrclub and marina, the Club will embark on a three month study aimed to achieve the following:

The elegant Oyster 56 showcased at RSYC On the evening of 13 April 2010, for its Asian debut, Double Queen's award yacht builders, Oyster Marine and their South east Asia/China representative, Asia Yacht Services (AYS)showcased the elegant Oyster 56 at the RSYC marina with a reception.

The Oyster 56 is one of the most successful yachts in Oyster's history, with over 70 built to date. "It is the first yacht with an ergonomically-designed cockpit, making relaxing and entertaining a true pleasure," said Bart Kimman of AYS.

"Seeing the increasing number of Oyster owners and prospective buyers here in Asia, this is another reason in setting up a service and marketing presence in the region" added Mr Kimman. He estimates that there are about

five Oysters currently in Singapore.

Boat Asia

tradition in focusing boating interests in Singapore and the

region. For four days, from 15 to 18 April, the premier boat show thrilled enthusiasts with

a wide range of luxury yachts on exhibit. Among them, and making their Asian debut, were the stylish Riviera 45 Flybridge, the Leopard 384 catamaran and the elegant Oyster 56.

There were some 60 boats

participating this year.

According to RSYC member Herman Ho, whose company is again the organiser of the event, this year's show has grown by a further 14 per cent in terms of number of boats taking part. It attracted more than 10,000 visitors, both trade and consumers.

RSYC took up a 30sqm booth at Boat Asia 2010. Our

participation this year was to rekindle our presence in the club industry. We received more quality visitors who showed genuine interest in berthing, sea-sports activities and new memberships.

At the opening on 15 April, the guest-of-honour and Second Minister for Transport, Ms Lim Hwee Hua, acknowledged the rising interest in a boating lifestyle. She was quoted in the local media as saying: "The success of this event...

is an indication of a growing interest in boating. I understand that some people have even chosen to make their boats their

permanent homes."

10th Anniversary of Official Opening of New Clubhouse Next month -- on 1 7 June 2010 -- marks the 10th

anniversary of the official opening of our current clubhouse and marina at 52 West Coast Ferry Road.

Exactly ten years ago, that was a unique moment in our history. We had finally regained a proper marina and built a spanking new clubhouse to boot, after many years of uncertainty and even some doubt of our future as a yacht club.

The official opening was performed by our distinguished patron, the late Mr OngTeng Cheong, who was the fifth President of the Republic of Singapore, from 1993 to 1999.

Here are excerpts from the RSYC Magazine of July/ August 2000:

"Commodore Lim Kwong Hoon gave the opening address to an estimated crowd of 1,000 members

and guests who had arrived at the Club in a constant stream since mid-afternoon. Mr Ong then addressed the gathering, giving a very concise history of the RSYC, highlighting the proud heritage of the Club.

Harry Ho and Mr Tan KayToh by inviting them to the stage. Two other past commodores, Mr Kam Chai Heng and Mr Loo Soon Heng, were unable to attend the ceremony.

"One of our special guests was Mr John Nutt, who flew in from England especially for the occasion.

John is the son of Mr Walter F. Nutt, who was our commodore in 1919-21 and was instrumental in re

establishing the modern RSYC atTanjong Pagar."

So this June 2010 we join hands to celebrate the 10th anniversary of our move to the West Coast, as well as the marking of our status as a historic institution, founded in 1826 as the Singapore Yacht Club, as acknowledged in the Singapore Chronicle of 15 February 1827, and recognised by the National Heritage Board in June 2000.

HERITAGE By previous arrangement, five yacht clubs in the region take turns to organise the SSR. In 2009 the 15th SSR was organised by Changi Sailing Club, in 2008 by SAP Yacht Club, in 2007 by RSYC and in 2006 by Raffles Marina. Next year would be Raffles Marina's turn again, and in 2012 the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club will get to organise it.

A seasoned sailor with almost 25 years of experience, Keith joined the RSYC earlier this year, and one of the reasons he joined the Club is its proximity to his home. "Makes it so much easier to come by to check and work on the boat."

With five years of sailing in Singapore under his belt, this year Keith will be making a very serious bid to capture the Lipton Cup that is traditionally presented to the overall winner (racing class) of the Singapore Straits Regatta, Raja Muda Regatta and the King's Cup Regatta. We are pleased to announce that Keith will be flying the RSYC burgee when he and his xrew compete for the winner's trophy later this year.

Though Keith has raced and won events before, taking the Yankee Papa Challenge Trophy in the Western Circuit Sailing Regatta was the first win with Pla Loma, a boat he purchased only a couple of months before. On his win, Keith said: "This was something of a warm-up for the crew before the Straits Regatta."
