PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE cosmopolitan membership and excellent facilities, membership at The Tanglin Club is still much sought after. Over the years, the Club has spared no efforts in the building, upgrading and renovating of its facilities, whether for dining, recreation or sports.
Dear members, In exactly five years, The Tanglin Club will be celebrating its 150th Anniversary. The Club was founded in October, 1865, when a group of “40 good men and true” met for the purpose of forming a social club to meet the needs of the British people living in Singapore. A property in the district of Claymore – the current site of the Club – was purchased in 1866, and The Tanglin Club was born. The Club has since grown by leaps and bounds. Today, there are 7,200 Members – comprising Ordinary, Associate and Term Members – from 42 nationalities. Arising from its strategic location,
The Wheelhouse and Swimming Pools are being upgraded and renovated. With Members’ approval, we hope to revamp the Club’s 16 guestrooms and the Churchill Room. In response to the call for energyefficient buildings and energy savings, the Club has commissioned a body approved by the National Environment Agency, to undertake an audit/ study to identify major energyconsuming equipment, understand the operation of the utility systems, and shortlist potential energy-saving measures. The raison d’être for this is simple. The energy costs for running the Club constitute one of the highest, if not the single highest ticket item. The electricity bill for last year was about $1.8 million – $1.3m for the main Clubhouse and $500,000 for the Sports & Recreation Complex.
The energy audit/study revealed that up to 10 energy saving measures have been identified. These measures, when implemented, would result in savings of approximately $160,000 per year, or 15 per cent of the Club’s annual electricity bill for the main Clubhouse. This is a small start, but a good start towards energy savings. Going forward, the Club’s Building and Maintenance Department will be tasked to look at ways and means to identify and recommend other significant energy-saving measures. In closing, may I remind and urge all Members to attend and express their views at the Special General Meeting on Monday, 15 November, at 6pm in the Churchill Room. This is your Club, and your active participation at an event such as this is very important. Joseph Chew President The Tanglin Club

GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE Dear Members, The Wheelhouse restaurant’s and Swimming Pools’ upgrading works are progressing well. We are nearing completion of Phase 1 of the project, and the Wheelhouse restaurant, the Main Swimming Pool and the adjacent Pool Lockers are scheduled to reopen on Friday, 29 October. Please note, though, that the reopening is subject to all authority approvals being obtained on time, and any change to the date will be communicated to Members on our notice boards and via other channels within the Club. In a related matter, the swimming pools’ salt water chlorination system will only be commissioned at the end of the year, as the system is now being manufactured in Australia according to our needs and specification. It is important for Members to note that the temporary café at the Wine Bar and Terrace Restaurant and Bar will stop operating three days before the reopening of the refurbished Wheelhouse. During these three days, trials will be conducted to test the operational effectiveness of the new area, and for our Food & Beverage (F&B) staff to get accustomed to their new work surroundings.

By now, you may also have seen that the floor slab near the link bridge outside the Reading Room (connecting the main Clubhouse and the Sports & Recreation [S&R] Complex) has been cut to accommodate a new staircase for easier access between the pool area and the S&R Complex. The DBS Automated Teller Machine has also been relocated to the telephone booth area, next to the lift in our Main Lobby. Meanwhile, work has commenced for the new Junior Library to be relocated to the former F&B Office, offering a larger and more airy space for Members’ children to read. The F&B Office was scheduled to move to the former Junior Library by the end of September. Apart from the Wheelhouse project, we continue to present our regular programmes and activities. An exciting upcoming event not to be missed is our Bollywood Night at the Churchill Room on Saturday, 23 October. Christmas is just around the corner, and we will showcase an exciting line-up of Christmas events in the Club in the next issue. Don’t forget to mark Sunday, November 28 on your calendar for the Club’s traditional Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in the Main Lobby! On staff matters, I would like to

OP-ED
On July 11, we took our children – six-year-old Natasha and four-year-old Isaac – to watch the movie, How to Train Your Dragon, at the Club. With the convenience of DVDs and VCDs these days, young children are used to watching movies ondemand at home. We did not think the movie experience would have that much of an impact and at the last minute, did rethink if we should simply wait for the DVD to be released and for the children to watch the movie at home, while the adults do our own thing. However, we carried on with our plans and arranged to watch the movie with two other families. When we arrived at the theatre, the atmosphere was delightful, as all the young children were excited for the movie to start. As it was at the Club, the audience was more forgiving and did not mind the children asking questions aloud during the movie. What added to the experience was that the Playroom had just relocated to the theatre foyer, so when a friend’s three year old was overwhelmed by certain scary scenes during the movie, he could go outside with daddy and play right outside – while the rest of the family could continue with the movie – and return when the scary bits ended.
Unlike going to the public cinema, there was no need to arrive early to get the tickets – tickets are available one week in advance, – and most importantly, there was no hassle looking for weekend parking at a mall. Naturally, the Club movie experience could be enhanced if popcorn were allowed in the theatre and some booster seats could be purchased for young children to manage the difficult flip-up cinema chairs. So parents, do make full use of this facility at the Club. We had no regrets and I look forward to seeing more young families at the next children’s movie. Ivy Lim L0934
I wish to urge other young parents to come to the Club for the movie experience. The movie experience also taught our children patience and delayed gratification – as the next children’s movie suitable for them airing at the Club was Nanny McPhee, which aired at the end of September. This is a two-month wait for the children, and makes the whole movie experience even more valued. The movie experience was also hassle-free for parents.

GENERAL COMMITTEE NOTICE
A Very Important SGM
meetings do not require a quorum to complete ordinary business.
Members are kindly requested to mark a very important date in their calendars: Monday, 15 November. That is when Members will be asked to decide on two classes of resolutions at our next Special General Meeting (SGM). First: To approve the deferred proposal to undertake quite urgent Alterations and Additions (A&A) to our 16 guestrooms. Guestrooms have been a significant contributor to the Club’s positive cash flow, but our ability to continue to charge top rates, and enjoy high occupancy levels, has been seriously compromised by the gradual deterioration that has occurred since the last makeover.
The General Committee (GC) has spent considerable time and effort, and given careful thought to the proposed Rule changes. Committee Members are in unanimous agreement that the proposals will significantly improve the democratic process, and ensure the efficient and fair conduct of General Meetings for the benefit of all Members. Increases in the joining fees for Term and Ordinary Members will be proposed, along with an increase in the Absent Members’ annual subscriptions. The GC will also request that the Planned Total Membership ceiling for Ordinary Membership be increased from 4,000 to 4,500 in order to regularise previous admissions and permit the resumption of the Limited Buy-Back Scheme. In this regard, it is essential that as many Members as possible attend this SGM, for without your approval the present unsatisfactory situation will continue indefinitely. Full details on the proposed Resolutions will be circulated well in advance of the meeting date.
Full details on the design details and cost will be tabled well in advance of the meeting date. Second: To approve a number of sensible changes to the Rules of the Club. The proposed changes are crafted to ensure the efficient and democratic conduct of future General Meetings, and to clarify the rights, privileges and obligations of the various classes of membership. It is apparent that many members have become somewhat disillusioned with the manner in which General Meetings of the Club have been conducted in recent years. Challenges to the quorum, in particular, have resulted in three of the last five meetings being adjourned, and then reconvened a week later to complete ordinary business (but not Rule changes) pursuant to the current Rules. Such reconvened

What members had to say...
If you visited the Club in August, you could not have failed to notice some colourful additions in the Lobby.
“What a joy to see so many lovely pictures in the Reception area of the Tanglin Club. It added interest to the Club to see such talent first hand.”
9 to 29 August at the Lobby
This changing display of paintings attracted a lot of attention and gave Members the opportunity to learn more about Singapore artists and the opportunity to buy their works. Various artists were present at selected times to talk to our Members and Guests. There was also a chance to contribute to an ongoing canvas. We noticed that the children on the whole were much happier to add that splash of colour to the painting, compared to the adults. K C Goh's gorgeous painting Sunday, which was offered for Silent Auction with the proceeds going to the Children’s Aid Society, drew the highest bid of $700 from Andrew Trevatt. Andrew later generously increased the amount to $1,000. As feedback has been so good, we hope to have another exhibition in November, which promises to transform the lobby into an Orchid Garden. Caroline Gregory
“How lovely to see all of these nice paintings. It really cheers up the lobby.” “It’s a marvellous idea to have the exhibition. So refreshing and especially meaningful to be able to meet the artists in person. I look forward to more similar events.” “These works of art are simply amazing, beautiful enough to be displayed in a prestigious gallery, and to see them here is a unique event.”

Christmas Pantomime…
Sleeping Beauty Saturday, 27 & Sunday, 28 November
The story of Sleeping Beauty is a classic fairy tale, and The Stage Club’s production contains all the traditional ingredients: a beautiful princess, a handsome prince, enchantment and magic, the battle between good and evil, and more. The story is about the christening of a baby princess, where three fairy godmothers give her special gifts. But a wicked fairy casts a terrible spell. When the princess reaches adulthood, she will prick her finger on a spindle and die. Fortunately, one of the fairy godmothers softens the spell. Instead of dying, the princess will sleep for 100 years and awake with true love’s first kiss. To protect his daughter, the king bans all spinning wheels from the palace, but on her 16th birthday the princess is tricked by an old woman – the wicked witch in disguise – and pricks her finger, fulfilling the wicked fairy’s curse. But the fairy godmother returns to put everyone in the castle to sleep so that they will awake with the princess. Unfortunately in the Stage Club’s version, the fairy godmother misses a couple of characters! How will they get to see the princess in 100 years’ time? You must watch the show to find out! The wicked fairy also puts a forest of thorns around the castle, so that no one can get through and wake the princess. A hundred years later, a prince comes to rescue her. Will he get through the forest of thorns? Will he kiss her and wake her from the curse? Will they all live happily ever after? The Stage Club’s production of Sleeping Beauty will answer all these questions. Look out for more details in the next issue.

FOOD & BEVERAGE
Long and loyal service Mr Robert Teo, a senior waiter in the Tavern, and an employee of The Tanglin Club for the past 42 years, retired on 30 September, drawing to a close a long and happy career in the Club. Mr Teo was hired as a Tuckshop Attendant – his first job – before being transferred to various Food & Beverage outlets. Initially recommended by his uncle, who was a Receptionist in the Club, Mr Teo eventually rose to the rank of Senior Captain, and was a constant source of wisdom and advice for the younger staff. The proud 62-year-old grandfather retired with warm well-wishes from many of his colleagues, who treasured their time with him. The Club thanks Mr Teo for his loyalty and hard work, and wishes him a fond farewell.

Situated in the Waipara area of North Canterbury, New Zealand, Muddy Water is a direct translation from the Maori place name - wai (water) para (sediment, mud). Just as its name reflects the place, its wines reflect its vineyards. Muddy Water vineyards are situated on sunny slopes above the Waipara Valley in North Canterbury, on the South Island of New Zealand. Protected from cool sea breezes by a range of coastal hills, the Waipara area has a climate distinct from the rest of Canterbury. Wines W of the Month
Gran Sangre de Toro & Gran Vina Sol G Available at all outlets A
Gran Sangre de Toro 2005 Savour all the exuberant aroma traditionally found in an intense, ripe red wine, with a sensual background of fine spices in good balance with perfumed notes reminiscent of blackberries. Full, long finish on the palate. Price: $53.50 (per bottle) & $10.70 (per glass). Gran Vina Sol 2008 Thanks to the presence of Chardonnay, the wine is intensely aromatic and full-bodied, with a profusion of flowery notes over a fruity background of very ripe peaches and a hint of fennel. On the palate, the wine has a long aftertaste and is silky with an elegant fullness. A touch of vanilla in the finish is indicative of the wine’s short ageing in French oak. Price: $53.50 (per bottle) & $10.70 (per glass).

Team Incredible India.
Sydney Swans and NZ All Blacks.
Apart from the usual social activity and progress of the 2010 championships, August was a fairly quiet month for the Section. Had it not been for the inaugural Nations Cup competition, excitement levels would have been somewhat low.
more like a ballet troupe, with Singapore Ethnics taking second place.
However, on 22 August, eight national teams in two groups of four took to the green in serious competition for what became the Tanglin Club’s Lawn Bowls equivalent of the World Cup! The groups were made up as follows: Group One New Zealand All Blacks, Out of Africa, Singapore Lions and UK Pomegranates
In the play-off for Cup Holders, which was a bit like “The Ashes”, the Poms outplayed the oo-lah-lah Sydney Swans to take the prize, while third place went to Singapore Ethnics. New Zealand All Blacks were considered to be the best dressed team. At the prize giving, which was held at the posh new Beer Garden, appropriate recognition was accorded by our jovial Convenor to the victors, when it was unanimously agreed that this event should feature in our events programme on an annual basis.
Group Two Canada Colonials, Incredible India, Singapore Ethnics and Sydney Swans
We are grateful for the organising skills of our captain Virginia Longfellow, and as always, to the staff of the Sports & Recreation Office, as well as to Devi Hodgkinson for organising the food and drink and the Food & Beverage Department for its catering expertise.
The playing format was triples, with each team playing a round robin of six ends against the three other teams in their group. This meant 18 ends of qualifying match play for each entrant, with the opportunity for group winners to have scored six points.
October is the month of the Pot, and this year Tanglin Club is the host. Bowls will be played on Sunday, 3 October, so register now if you want to be part of the team. Prize-giving will be on Saturday, 9 October at the Churchill Room.
The Group One winner was UK Pomegranates, with Out of Africa taking second place.
The green is there for your pleasure. Please come and enjoy it.

last ounce of energy to break Oliver back for 5-5, amid feverish cheers from the gallery.
The match started with Oliver raining 200-plus km/hr serves and powerful ground strokes at Ken, which unsettled him and forced him to be on the defensive. An early break was wrapped up with another ace from Oliver, and he comfortably took the set 6-2.
As Ken began to tire, Oliver delivered the coup de grâce and played two outstanding passes to move to match point at 6-5, and this time, he made no mistake with a service winner to defeat the exhausted Ken 6-2 7-5.
In the second set, with loud cheers from all his young students and supporters, Ken adjusted his tactics to move Oliver around the court, instead of trading tough rallies with the young Olympian. This was effective and rewarded Ken with a break of serve to lead 3-0.
Well-done Ken, for a gallant fight against someone 25 years his junior!
Sensing a threat, Oliver stepped up his power game and clinched the critical 4-4 game after several deuces to serve for the match. However, Ken was not ready to give up yet, and fought with his

Singapore Cricket Club-Tanglin Club
Doubles Squash Tournament
We hosted our annual “Members + Guests” Doubles Tournament with Singapore Cricket Club on 22 August. The concept of this event is to mix players from each Club into pairs, selected such that each team has a reasonable chance of winning. Teams are handicapped to fine-tune the balance. This handicap is further modified up or down, depending on the result of each game. The desired outcome is many close matches, with the spectating as much fun as the playing. The final featured Rob Aarvold and Lood van Rooyen versus Shane Hagan and Anthony Rawlinson. This was Rob’s first exposure to doubles, but his strength and fitness enabled him to learn fast. Lood characteristically chased down every ball and shot winners, but he and Rob eventually succumbed to Club No.1 Shane, partnered with experienced regular Anthony.
Ishwarlal Pranlal passes on his experience.
Al Aspen and Mandy Wan played Sylvester Yong and Thaddeus Tsang for third-place honours. What a diverse four! Al delivered his characteristic high-level doubles game, Mandy provided the glamour and her singles squash experience, Sylvester contributed his canniness as a seasoned doubles veteran, and Thaddeus brought speed, a quick grasp of the game and a beaming smile. Unfortunately, Sylvester had to pull out with leg cramps, leaving Al and Mandy the winners. The prize giving and a buffet dinner were held at the Beer Garden after the tournament.
Annual Visit of the Japanese Team
On 2 September, we welcomed back the Japanese “Combined University” team led by 14-time National Champion Ushiogi Hitoshi. As in previous years, the youthful enthusiasm and infectious laughter of the mixed Japanese team made for a thoroughly enjoyable evening of social squash. Ushiogi fielded some of Japan’s top players, with the ladies playing especially well. Games were followed by a buffet dinner and drinks at the Beer Garden. Brian Dickerson

GOLF
How to ‘Make’ An Annual Championship
From left: Chris Claridge (Convenor), Belinda Young (Club Barclays Champion), Graham Bibby (Barclays) and S T Yeo (Captain).
The Menu
The Tanglin Club Golf Section only exists to give Members access to regular golf games organised under the auspices of the Club, and each Section Member the chance to play several of these at a subsidised rate. To facilitate this the Golf Section Sub-committee organises 20 games and two overseas tours a year. Members join the Golf Section and sign up for the games of their choice on a first-come, first-served basis. On 27 August, 130 Tanglin Club Members claimed their rights by signing up for the Barclays Annual Golf Championship. Months of careful preparation skilfully coordinated by Cecilia Quintanilla, overseen by the Golf Section Committee and financially supported by Barclays Capital resulted in one of the best Championships the Club has held. The menu, the ingredients and the recipe would have left even local Pasir Ris celebrity chef Roberto Lorenzo lost for words. And the icing on the cake? We made Club history when we

crowned our first Lady Club Barclays Champion, Belinda Young.
The Ingredients
• Around 100 hours of planning over three months of how to spend $35,000 of Members’, Club and Barclays Capital money wisely. • Sponsorship from Banyan Tree, Como Resorts, Cruise Whatever, Jabra, Barclays shirts and caps, Tanglin Club umbrellas, Aladdin ice creams, Spa Botanica vouchers, K.C. Dat/Asian Tiger socks and goody bags. • The full support of Vanessa Yeo and her team at Singapore Island Country Club with “onions and chilli” on the first tee of the Sime Course. • Enthusiastic support from the Club’s Food & Beverage, General, Golf, Magazine, Marketing Communications and Sports Committees and teams.
The Recipe
• One shotgun start with 121 or so official Singapore Golf Association handicapped golfers

targeting to shoot 8,928 net strokes to win nine prizes, 620 chances to win holidays and mobile phone accessories on the par 3s and 15 free chances to win $3,000 of lucky draw prizes. • One chance to win a Barclays Blue jacket and be their VIP guest at the Singapore Open in November. • One eat as-much-as-you-wish Sunday Brunch on a Friday Buffet, with the added attraction of complimentary beer and wine and a stampede start.
The Churchill Room

Belly Dancing and Rhythmic Fitness Belly dancing, originating in the Middle East, is a collection of natural movements performed to the beat of exotic and relaxing music. Although it has gained popularity, it has not caught on yet as a form of exercise. One of the oldest forms of dance in the world, and originally a ritual to celebrate fertility and the female form, belly dancing is a total body workout. It is a new trendy exercise for those who want to keep fit and de-stress. Unlike jogging or aerobics, belly dancing is low-impact, meaning that you can enjoy the dance movements without placing undue stress on your knees, joints and feet. Having taught this dance as a form of exercise for the past eight years in Singapore, and having conducted workshops with some well-known performers, Soheila aims to unveil the physical and mental benefits of this beautiful dance. She has combined her analytical and teaching abilities with her passion for dance to create the Rhythmic Fitness programme. Course Fee: 4 weeks – $120. Time: Every Thursday at 11.30am Venue: Studio 2. For more information about Belly Dancing, please call the Gym at 66220575.

New ‘kids’ in the gym Trainer: Andyn
Let me cut to the chase here. I will not create a boring list about my credentials and qualifications, or any marketing gimmicks.
I can present a whole list of impressive achievements to get your attention, but the important things that you need to know are that I am a Certified Personal Trainer, a Certified Kettlebell Trainer, and I am Certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and First-Aid.
possess – our body weight. My method of an ideal workout is to keep everything simple, and always remember the basics. Our aim is to make fitness part of our lifestyle and not something that we do when we need to look good for an occasion, because in that way, we are putting ourselves, our bodies, at risk.
My exercise prescriptions are tailored depending on individual, or group goals and needs, based on functionality and effectiveness. Rest assured that all exercises prescribed have been tried and tested personally by me because I have been trained to lead by example. Finally, there will be no excuses. I am a no-nonsense trainer, and I take each and every one of my clients seriously.
However, if you insist on scrutinising my credentials, I am more than happy to present you with a detailed profile when we meet up for an interview. It is only fair that you know what you are paying for.
All you need to do is give your all during training, talk less, eat right, and nothing can go wrong.
My philosophy as a trainer/coach is to be able to help my clients achieve a better quality of life.
How we feel and look in-between is ultimately our choice.
Just remember that we are born frail and weak, and we will die the same way.

The truth is, we can achieve a supreme fitness level just by making do with what we already
Trainer: Lewis Toh
Hello, everyone! My name is Lewis Toh and I am a certified Personal Trainer, certified Functional Movement Screen Specialist and Integrated Corrective Exercise Trainer.
Training does not need to be fancy to get results, but it does require hard work and consistency. A bad programme done consistently is better
I have been in the health and fitness industry for approximately 10 years. I have worked in commercial and members clubs, focusing on postural correction and prehabilitation.
Prevention is better than cure, so treat your body right and it will take care of you. My main goal is to ensure that my clients develop a solid foundation that they can build their fitness goals on. If you are willing to commit yourself to it, you will see the result. I look forward to seeing you in the gym and will assist you in the best way I can.
I am extremely excited to join Tanglin Club doing what I love, which is interacting with people from all walks of life and helping them to improve physically and mentally.
I will leave you with a thought. Remember the 23:1 rule. You can have a perfect hour in the gym each day, but that still leaves you 23 hours to mess it up at home and work!
My training philosophy is, “Move well, and then move more, never put fitness on top of dysfunction.”

WELLNESS
Are spas effective? From what she has experienced, both as a medical doctor and a wellness consultant, Dr Geraldine Mitton is convinced they are. Regular users of spas appreciate and understand their short- and long-term health benefits. However, some regard spas as expensive havens for the pampered, overweight and bored elite. Among the sceptics, health professionals, in particular, medical doctors, regard spa therapies with mistrust. This group considers spa treatments no more than a placebo effect, or sometimes even dangerous. Some areas within spa practices do give me cause for concern. Promises of weight loss, antiageing and rejuvenation are often associated with products and treatments promoted to attract clients who will pay for a quick-fix solution. Colon hydrotherapy is controversial and may cause serious problems if not administered correctly. Finally, some therapists give clients unscientific advice and incorrect recommendations. Making sure all staff have recognised professional qualifications, and understand the benefits, contraindications and complications of therapies is needed to make the industry more credible. Each therapist needs to have a holistic knowledge of all the ingredients of products and the spa manager needs to have approved the products and services, making sure they adhere to ethical and professional principles.
“Making sure all staff have
recognised professional qualifications, and understand the benefits, contraindications and complications of therapies is needed to make the industry more credible. The High Rustenburg Health Hydro Destination Spa in South Africa, where I was medical director, catered for up to 100 guests (with 120 staff) who normally stayed for a minimum seven days to take part in healthcare programmes. Each guest was monitored on alternate days for weight and blood pressure, and his or her urine, blood sugar and body composition was tested. Guests came with problems ranging from minor to chronic health, and within a week there was a marked improvement, including a dramatic sense of well-being. We were able to document a reduction in blood pressure, improved digestion, normal levels of blood sugar, and for those who stayed longer, we could show improved blood lipids and liver functions. Results recorded over 14 years were always positive, but I did not publish these findings in scientific
www.tanglinclub.org.sg
journals due to the stringent criteria required for research articles. At Sante Winelands Hotel and Wellness Centre, also in South Africa, where I was spa director, we conducted corporate wellness programmes focused on stress reduction for female executives. Again, the results were uniformly positive. I have seen the benefits of spa therapies first hand for more than 20 years. However, scientific proof with double blind placebo controlled studies was not possible in our spa environment. After all, our guests came to rest and relax, not to take part in clinical trials. Following the Global Spa Summit, held recently in Istanbul, a number of us are collaborating on a journal, which will present evidence validating the benefits of spa therapies. It will be presented in a language that can be understood by spa therapists and those in the industry. Dr Geraldine Mitton Dr Mitton contributed this article to a recent issue of Spa Business Magazine. A spa consultant for Spa Botanica, Dr Mitton has more than 20 years’ experience as a medical, wellness and spa director. She is based in South Africa.

At Eagle Falls.
Hike up to Camp Creek.
Kimberley Wilderness Adventure Cruise Manfred and I recently returned from a dream cruise of a lifetime. The Wilderness Adventure Cruise of the Kimberley was so fantastic that it left a deep, lasting impression on me. The Kimberley coast of North-western Australia is largely undisturbed by man and a place where indigenous animals and plants flourish in their natural environment. Words are inadequate to describe the raw, vibrant beauty of this area – the unexpectedly subtle to the blatant assaults on the senses by colours that left me in awe. This rugged area of Northwestern Australia can only be explored on a small ship like the True North, which holds 36 passengers. Our group of 27 (average age 55 and one 88-year-old retired doctor), were taken care of by a crew of 18 young enthusiastic Aussies. Everyone got along well.

lucky to have spotted two whales, one blowing. Two picnics were organised. The helicopter flew us to otherwise inaccessible scenic areas with impressive waterfalls and pools where we spent the day enjoying our swims and a scrumptious lunch. On one particular excursion, we were treated to a do-it-yourself or call-for-help-from-others mud bath. We were a bunch of adults laughing and squealing like kids, having the time of our lives. Another fun activity was oyster picking. We spread out with hammers and chisels among the rocks in search of big, juicy ones. We gathered a large bucketful, which we shucked and ate with champagne on the beach, watching the sun set.
Champagne and fresh oysters on the beach of Winyalkan and Palm Islands.
I participated in several exhilarating hikes, climbing up sandstone rocks for about 45 to 60 minutes. Our reward was swims in pools located in amazing scenery, framed by gushing waterfalls, or viewing and learning about Aboriginal art in secluded sandstone caves dating as far back as 17,000 years.
The food was healthy and tasty, enhanced by a good selection of wines. Our hobby fishermen and women provided us with fresh fish daily.
I returned from this trip happy, invigorated and refreshed but humbled by all that I saw. It made me think deeply about our world, our actions and our responsibilities.
On our sightseeing tours, we spotted rock wallabies, salt/fresh water crocodiles, dugongs, dolphins, tame tawny sharks, birds and other forms of wildlife.
We are the sole custodians of nature’s many treasures, and we need to love and be at peace with our world.

Book Review
Furious Love: Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and the Marriage of the Century By Sam Kashner & Nancy Schoenberger
Drawing on brandnew information and interviews – and on actor Richard Burton’s private, passionate and heartbreaking letters to movie star Elizabeth Taylor – Furious Love sheds new light on the movies, the sex, the scandal, the fame, the brawls, the booze, the bitter separations, and, of course, the fabled jewels. Shocking and unsparing in its honesty, the book explores the very public marriage of “Liz and Dick”, as well as the private struggles of Elizabeth and Richard, including their affair on the set of the notorious epic Cleopatra that earned them condemnation from the Vatican; Burton’s hardscrabble youth in Wales; the crippling alcoholism that nearly destroyed his career and contributed to his early death; the medical issues that plagued both him and Elizabeth; and the failed aspirations and shame that haunted him throughout their relationship. The book demonstrates how the legendary pair presaged America’s changing attitudes towards sex, marriage, morality and celebrity. Yet, ultimately, as the authors show, Elizabeth and Richard shared something priceless beyond the drama: enduring love.
