HOPS About us...
1924-2015 Reg Charity No: 504462
Harrogate Operatic Players was formed following a meeting held on 10th March 1924 at The Belvedere on the junction between West Park and Victoria Avenue. The first performance was ‘Trial by Jury’ at The Winter Gardens followed by their first full length production of ‘The Rebel Maid’ in February 1925 at the Grand Opera House – now the Harrogate Theatre. Annual musical productions were held in this venue until 1939. No shows were presented between 1940 and 1946 but in 1946 the annual productions began again, this time performed at The Royal Hall to accommodate larger audiences. From 1987, ‘Showtime’ productions were performed in addition to the annual book show and latterly, the players replaced these with the very popular ‘Serenades’ in the Sun Pavilion. Due to the sudden closure of The Royal Hall in 2002, annual productions moved back to Harrogate Theatre. In May 2008, the society was delighted to return to The Royal Hall to celebrate its re-opening following it’s glorious restoration with ‘A Century of Song’ choosing a programme to include songs from musicals and other popular songs from ten decades. This programme was extremely successful, both artistically and financially, with the result that £15,000 was donated to The Royal Hall Restoration Trust making the society one of this great hall’s major benefactors.

Helen Mills - Chairman A very warm welcome to our 2016 production of Annie. We are delighted to be able to bring this fantastic show to Harrogate Theatre and to our Harrogate audiences. We have been incredibly lucky to be able to work with some wonderful children for this production. Our two wonderful Annies and 16 fantastic orphans have really worked their socks off to make this production what it is. We auditioned over 125 talented children, which made the job very difficult for the auditioning panel. However, we are so pleased with the final teams and we wish them all the very best of luck for a fantastic show week. I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank all the members and friends of the society and especially the hard working committee for their support throughout the year. As I am sure you realise, a show of this scale is not an easy feat to pull off. From the staging to props, costumes to make up, backstage crew and front of house, a lot of their personal time is given up to bring all these elements together in order to put on a top class production for you to enjoy. Finally, a very big thank you to you, our audience, for your support. Without you we would be unable to perform in this wonderful theatre and continue with the hobby we love. Helen Mills
Betty Bratley - President Welcome to our wonderful production of Annie. Annie has long been a favourite with many musical lovers and those who have watched Annie, on stage or screen as a child will want to share those memories with their children. It really holds a special place in a lot of our hearts. As President of our society, I’ve been lucky enough to watch our cast during rehearsals and have experienced them grow from the auditions to standing up on stage this week. The girls that play the parts of Annie and the Orphans have done a superb job and I know you’ll be as impressed as I was when I first saw them. The adult cast have also done a great job in all their roles. Harrogate Operatic Players is one big team, from the team you see on stage tonight, to the many hard working back stage crew. We’ve put together another wonderful production that I’m proud to be a part of. Hope you enjoy the show! Betty Bratley

Rehearsals
Michael Kirkby - Director & Choreographer Michael, from Leeds, began his musical career at the age of 13, playing the role of Barnaby in ‘Hello, Dolly!’. Since then, he has gone on to play lead roles in over 100 musicals, including ‘Crazy for You’, ‘42nd Street’ and ‘Anything Goes’. His favourite roles include Kipps in ‘Half a Sixpence’ and the title role in ‘Hans Andersen’. Michael’s television credits include five years on ‘Junior Showtime’, ‘The Flaxton Boys’, and the paper boy in ‘Queenie’s Castle’ with Diana Dors. His film credits include Alan Parker’s hit musical ‘Bugsy Malone’ in which, at the age of 14, he was lucky enough to land the role of Angelo in Fat Sam’s gang. A trained singer and dancer, he turned his talents to directing and choreographing over 20 years ago and now has over 50 shows to his credit. He has also had several award-winning musicals at the Edinburgh Festival. He is delighted to be back in Harrogate as Director and Choreographer, having made his stage debut with us in 1987 as Kipps. He has directed our productions since 2002. Mike leads a busy life on and off stage and we are grateful to him for fitting us in his schedule. His rehearsals are always fun.
Craig L. Ratcliffe - Musical Director Craig is Director of Music at St. John Fisher Catholic High School and 2016 sees him work with Harrogate Operatic Players for the third time as Musical Director following ‘Showtime’ (2015) and ‘A Night of Musicals’ (2014). Craig is in demand in many different fields of music and works regularly with young people to develop their musical skills. Formerly the Musical Director of the Harrogate Band, he spends what free time he has performing as a trombonist in local theatre productions. Craig is also an Artistic Director for the Harrogate International Youth Festival and works as a trustee for the Harrogate International Festival, bringing international artists to Harrogate and the surrounding area. Previous roles as Musical Director and Producer include ‘Seussical the Musical’, ‘The Wizard of Oz’, ‘The Sound of Music’, ‘Phantom of the Opera’, ‘Oliver!’, ‘Hairspray’, ‘Sister Act’, ‘Annie’, ‘The Wind in the Willows’, ‘Chicago’ and ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’.
Red Team Holly Todd - Annie
Holly, aged 10, from St Robert’s Primary School in Harrogate has always loved performing and especially Musical Theatre. At the age of 5 she won her school’s equivalent of Britain’s Got Talent singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow. She has gone on to be a munchkin in ‘The Wizard of Oz’, picked pockets as one of Fagin’s gang in ‘Oliver!’, and most recently as a villager in ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ at Harrogate Theatre. She has a lot of energy and keeps active with swimming, taking part in athletics competitions, and as a member of the artistic squad at Harrogate Gymnastics.
Olivia Simpson - May | Alyssa Parris - Duffy | Laura Robinson - July Mia Felstead - April | Grace White - Tessie Eve Beckett-Kemp - Molly | Annabel Thompson - Pepper | Elsa Gordon - Kate
Blue Team Emily Belcher- Annie
Emily, aged 13, has been performing since she was 4 and is a dedicated student at KSSD. Her first role was as Goldilocks in her school show but since then she has had many roles, including Tinkerbell in ‘Peter Pan’ (where she actually got to fly!), and Gavroche and Little Cosette in ‘Les Miserables’, amongst others. She has played Tessie in ‘Annie’ twice and is delighted to finally play Annie herself. Her first musical with ‘HOPS’ was as Marta in ‘The Sound of Music’ and she is delighted to return. Emily wishes to thank her Drama teachers, Denyse and Catherine, as well as her singing teacher, Paula, for all their support. Emily says “break a leg” to Holly, the other ‘Annie’, both sets of orphans and to the whole team who have all been great fun to work with. She wants to thank her family and friends and you for coming to watch.

Gary came to the theatre late in life - he took a little persuading to ‘give it a go’ - but he’s certainly made up for it!
With a lifelong love of musicals, Natalie has enjoyed being in many productions over the years. She has also enjoyed performing in tribute bands with gigs in the UK and all around the world.
Gary is looking forward to playing the part of Daddy Warbucks in this production of ‘Annie’.
Natalie made her stage debut, aged 8, as an orphan in ‘Annie’ at Lewisham Theatre in London and is absolutely delighted to now be playing Grace in HOPS production.
.
Ruth is thrilled to be returning to HOPS after playing the rapping nun Mary Lazarus in last year’s smash hit ‘Sister Act’. Ruth has had an absolute ball playing the eccentric Miss Hannigan, and as a Mum of two and a teacher in real life, she has had the excuse to shout at kids morning, noon and night for the last few months! (She’s very nice really!) Ruth would like to thank all her family, friends and students from Wetherby Stage Stars for all their support .
Richard is an active member of both the National Youth Theatre (NYT) and the National Youth Musical Theatre (NYMT), with whom he is set to perform the role of Harry in new musical ‘Brass’. The production was written for NYMT and will be performed at Hackney Empire, London, later this year. Having lived in London for the past few years, Richard is delighted to be back playing the role of Rooster in this production of ‘Annie’.

Having been in her previous Society for 27 years, it has felt very strange being the ‘new girl’ again. Having moved up from Cirencester in Gloucestershire last year, Lizzie was delighted to be accepted by HOPS for their Showtime concert in November. When not performing, Lizzie is the School Administrator at Highfield Prep School in Harrogate and is a wife, wicked stepmother and would-be domestic goddess!
Stuart, has been a member of HOPS since 2011 and has enjoyed many exciting roles. Alongside working as a Performing Arts Technician and running HOPS Juniors, Stuart is also Principal of Ripon Stage Academy and a freelance graphic designer.
As a loyal follower of HOPS for many years supporting his wife (and our Chairman!) Helen, Gavin was eventually persuaded to ‘tread the boards’ himself in the 2014 production Oklahoma! An experience he thoroughly enjoyed. From there a ‘fire was lit’ and after playing 5 minor roles in last year’s smash Sister Act, he is now really excited about performing the role of President Franklin D Roosevelt in Annie and showing the wife how it’s done!! He really hopes you will enjoy watching the show!!
This will be Dan’s second show with HOPS, following ‘Showtime’ in 2015. He is very much looking forward to playing the role of Bert Healy (and other assorted cameos), and would like to thank his family and friends, as well as the cast and crew, for supporting and encouraging him throughout the rehearsal process.

HOPS Charity of the Year We are delighted to be a Charity of the Year partner with Martin House Children’s Hospice. Following our launch of HOPS Juniors in September and with our current production, ‘Annie’ in mind - our members voted to support Martin House Children’s House Hospice as our Charity of the year partner. The aim of Martin House is to provide family led care for children with life shortening conditions. It is a place where children, young people and their families can come to stay from time to time along their journey and find support, rest and practical help. So far our fundraising efforts have included Carol Singing, a ‘Dry February’! and ’Miss Hannigan’ (Ruth Graham) running the Leeds 1/2 marathon in May. Next month, the HOPs team will be running in the Colour Run at Stockeld Park in July. It really has been another busy, but rewarding and worthwhile year. If you would like to support our fundraising efforts - you can either put a donation in one of collection tins or buckets in the theatre bar or foyer today or online on our Just Giving page - www.justgiving.com/hops Hopefully, together we can make a difference to so many children and families in our community.
