CELEBRATING 90 YEARS! Made In Dagenham - 2017
Welcome to Yeadon Theatre Company (affectionately known as Yeadon amateurs) We are a friendly, community run theatre company based in the heart of Yeadon. Established in 1930, we are renowned for our outstanding, Show-stopping sell out theatrical productions. Typically, we do three shows a year; a big musical production, a smaller show and a Christmas Concert. We also hold other, smaller community events such as quiz nights, strawberry teas and coffee mornings. Whilst part of our mission is to provide entertainment for both our members and audiences, we also use our platform to raise money for good causes. Charities we have helped over rent years, include, St Martins Hospice, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Candlelighters, to name just a few.
9 TO 5 - 2018
Bad Girls - 2019
We recently voted as a Company for a change of name, to reflect the needs of our audience and bring us more up to date. Whilst we very much enjoy traditional shows such as Carousel, the Sound of Music and Oklahoma, we have also welcomed more modern works as was demonstrated by our award- winning performances of Made in Dagenham, 9 to 5 and Bad Girls The Musical. We are delighted and thought it fitting for our 90th year Anniversary, to return to an all - time favourite, ‘Oklahoma!’ It is amazing to think that Yeadon Theatre Company is 90 years old and has survived the second World War and many of the ups and downs common to Amateur Theatre groups over the years. It is also incredible that it has maintained many loyal and active members throughout the generations, who are still passionate about their organisation to this day and are truly responsible for its survival. Yeadon Theatre Company Committee today is made up of a core circle of dedicated people, guided by Chairperson Dorothy Darnbrough, who work hard together on a voluntary basis to put on high quality, professional performances. Their work involves balancing budgets, recruiting members, publicity, adhering to changing local government rules and working hard to combat continual logistical challenges. The spectacular shows that result, are just the tip of the iceberg!

Two of the oldest, active members, Joan Graham, and Colleen Metcalfe, have vivid memories of the organisation from when they joined in 1955. YAODS was one of many theatre groups in the area, most being church associated drama and youth groups. They recall their first performance was Wild Violets in 1956 at their home venue Yeadon Town Hall. Joan was a dancer and Colleen became involved because they needed more dancers and her mother was already doing the “props” that year. Colleen remembers starting two weeks after her friend Joan! They remember in those days that rehearsals were strict and tardiness was frowned upon. Everyone had a responsibility as part of the group to do their bit and they were not allowed to join or play a role for any other drama group in the area unless with formal written consent from the committee. It is quite different today, where there is more fluidity of people between drama groups. Members, including, Joan and Colleen continue to work today raising important funds for the Yeadon Theatre Company as part of theLadies Committee with other volunteers. They put on several events a year and are always present at every rehearsal to provide much needed refreshment. They form an integral and important part of the organisation working tirelessly ‘behind the scenes.’ Sadly, this year some members have had to retire, however younger members have taken on fundraising roles to support and account for this. We are constantly excited with the excellent standard of talent that “walks through our doors” each year from drama school students and graduates to older generations who simply want to fulfil an ambition to perform on stage with other theatre enthusiasts. It is never too late to start! A huge thank you to all our dedicated members for keeping Yeadon Theatre Company alive to serve our local community. Yeadon theatre Company is always looking to recruit new members to help back stage or as cast members and are guaranteed to have fun and make new friends, in addition to improving confidence and learning stage craft. COMMITTEE MEMBERS
OBITUARIES John Hudson It was with much sadness that we heard of John’s death on the 1st of December last year after a short illness. John joined the Society in the 1960’s and appeared in many musicals and plays taking a variety of leading roles. He is best remembered for his amazing portrayals of Fagin in Oliver and Mack in Mack and Mabel. He served on the committee for a number of years and was always happy to lend a hand. John was also very popular with our German exchange choir and they loved to hear him perform as a member of the Barbers Shop Quartet as well as his solo singing. He will be greatly missed in the Amateur Theatre World as well as in the local community and our sympathy goes out to his wife Sheila, daughters Alexis and Michelle and their families.
Edward E Mould Sadly, Ted passed away in Airedale Hospital in January 2020. He was a Life Member of The Society, along with his late wife Ruth, and a long serving Member of The Management Committee of Yeadon Amateurs. He had an excellent singing voice and took many memorable leading roles in musicals and plays.
Rachel Riley, Kate Hustler, Joan Graham, Christine Almond, Yasmin Darnbrough, Nicola Ware.
Moving away to Henley on Thames with his work, he still kept in touch with The Amateurs with his lifelong friend, Gerald Long.
LADIES COMMITTEE
On retirement, he moved back to Ilkley and joined The Steeton Male Voice Choir along with his late brother Brian, and continued to support our Society’s productions. Ted was a true gentleman and will be greatly missed by everyone.

The National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA), founded in 1899, is the leading representative body for amateur theatre in the UK. The Association has a membership of approximately 2400 amateur theatre groups and over 2000 individual members staging musicals, operas, plays, concerts and pantomimes in a wide variety of venues ranging from the country’s leading professional theatres to village halls. Covering a broad spectrum of age ranges NODA member societies meet the needs of all le vels of both performers, whether dramatic, dance or musical, and those involved backstage, front of house or in society administration. NODA aims: • To give a shared voice to amateur theatre • To help societies and individuals achieve the highest standards of best practice and performance. • To provide leadership and advice to enable amateur theatre to tackle the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century To achieve these aims NODA is divided into eleven regions, each headed by a regional councillor who sits on the National Council (ruling body of the Association), and supported by a network of regional representatives and officials. These volunteers are the vital link to the grass roots of the Association; the amateur theatre groups themselves and their members. To provide support and assistance to these volunteers, the Association is administered from its office in Peterborough by a knowledgeable and friendly staff who can deal with any enquiry about amateur theatre. Membership of NODA provides theatre groups and individuals with a wide range of benefits, including access to NODA’s advice service at national and regional level, as well as representation to government, access to funding agencies, direct access to rights holders and the media, as well access to regional and national conferences, workshops and seminars to help share information on best practice. NODA holds an annual residential Summer School (with bursaries available) offering training from professional tutors in a wide range of both performance and technical courses as well as a similar residential academy to provide similar performance based training for those under 18. NODA also holds an annual national and regional programme and poster competition to encourage high standards in design. Through its trading arm, NODA Limited members have access to a varied range of products and services, including insurance for both societies and individuals, long service awards that recognise the dedication made by individuals to amateur theatre, discounts on plays, vocal scores, libretti and technical books and a range of NODA branded merchandise.
