ABOUT GAOS GAOS is one of the longest established amateur theatrical groups in West Yorkshire. We have always performed musicals and operetta with one main production each year, usually in February - March. We adopt a professional approach to our productions, working with experienced and professional production teams and usually cast by open audition. We design and build our own sets and this enables us to get the maximum working space from a restricted stage area. We hire costumes for most shows and usually work with a pit orchestra of 10 or 12 players. We have a loyal and long serving core membership but new members, young or old, either playing or back stage, are always needed and made welcome. GAOS has been a very keen supporter of The National Operatic and Dramatic Association, having hosted many NODA events at the Theatre as well sending large parties of members to the North-East Area's Annual Weekend. Over the years the Society's programmes have often featured among the winners in both the North-East Area Competition and the National Competition.

David Kirk - Director David began directing exactly thirty five years ago when he was a co-founder of the highly successful Barnstormers Theatre Company, based here at Guiseley Theatre from 1984 – 2004, where he directed 32 productions, including regional and national amateur premieres. He has now reached his centenary – yes - Annie is the hundredth production he has directed! Over the years, David feels privileged to have directed musicals and plays at theatres all over Yorkshire including Leeds City Varieties, Ilkley Playhouse, Wakefield Theatre Royal, Sheffield Lyceum and, for thirteen years, Bradford Alhambra. Three musicals transferred to Waterford Opera House, Buxton Opera House and the beautiful outdoor Minack Theatre in Cornwall. His next (summer 2020) productions are Singin’ in the Rain (Ilkley Playhouse) followed by Hello, Dolly! (Winter Gardens, Ilkley). Annie is David’s third production for GAOS following his highly successful The Full Monty and Sister Act in 2018. He is also an accomplished performer and has appeared in many musicals and plays – not quite a hundred although not far off! As this production opens, he goes straight into rehearsal for Alan Ayckbourn’s Absurd Person Singular at Bingley Little Theatre (December) before appearing as ‘Professor Higgins’ in My Fair Lady at Leeds Grand Theatre in March 2020. A very busy season!
Ian Sapiro - Musical Director Annie is Ian’s fifth show with Guiseley Amateur Operatic Society following Evita, Legally Blonde and Sister Act in the last few years, and The Likes of Us a decade ago. He is an Associate Professor of Music for Stage and Screen at the University of Leeds where he lectures on and researches in these two areas with a particular focus on the creative processes involved and adaptations between stage and screen. Indeed, the musical Annie marks an intersection of Ian’s academic and practical work, with his book chapter ‘“You Will Know That She is Our Annie”: Comparing Three Adaptations of a Broadway Classic’ in the new Oxford Handbook of Musical Theatre Screen Adaptations, drawing on research started the previous time he did the show, and being published part-way through the rehearsal period for this Guiseley production.Favourite productions include West Side Story with Halifax Light Opera Society, Fiddler on the Roof with Buttershaw St Paul’s AODS at the Bradford Alhambra, and the same show with Bradford Youth Players, as well as Guiseley’s production of Sister Act last year. Annie is Ian’s fifty-first show as a musical director and he is particularly happy and proud to be sharing it with his daughter, Jennie, who is appearing in her first show.
Ted Oxley-Kirk – Choreographer Ted is an award winning choreographer whose credits as a choreographer include La Cage Aux Folles, Me and My Girl, Crazy For You, Footloose, High Society, Bugsy Malone, Betty Blue Eyes, Stepping Out, A Chorus Line, The Wizard of Oz, The Wiz, Kiss Me Kate, Sweet Charity, The Full Monty and many more. His future projects include Singin in the Rain (Ilkley), A Christmas Carol (Bingley), Hello, Dolly! (Ilkley ). Ted lectures at stage schools across Yorkshire in musical theatre.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES Annie shines like the top of the Chrysler Building!! The nation’s favourite adorable red-headed orphan Annie is back in this exciting, revamped production that juxtaposes the opulent life of the rich who call the shots at the White House, against the grimy, miserable life of the poor on the streets of New York who have no voice at all. And that is precisely why the musical is still so relevant today - particularly in terms of government bankers and what it is to be in a society that treats the weak and the vulnerable with utter contempt - throughout years of austerity. Sound familiar? Annie challenges a cabinet of miserable Government ministers to think differently about the problems of America and leads them to declare a New Deal to bring them out of the Depression. Perhaps she should pay a visit to the House of Commons to sort out the Brexit mess!! The tale of orphan Annie and her optimistic search to track down her parents has long been a staple for families across the globe. Set in 1930s New York during the era of the Great Depression, our eternally optimistic heroine, with her fiery red hair, kind nature and courage, is the star of the show who believes that her parents will one day return and save her from her life of misery in the orphanage under the torment of the shambolic, cruel Miss Hannigan. But Annie’s luck changes one day when she is chosen to spend Christmas in the luxurious residence of billionaire Oliver Warbucks and is given everything her heart could ever desire. However, she remains determined to find her real parents, and enlists Warbucks to use his power and status to help her on her quest. There are, of course, many delightful moments along the way as Annie manages to charm everyone she meets, inspiring Mr Warbucks and even President Roosevelt to “stick out their chin and grin” in the face of adversity and remain positive. Her calling card is of course Tomorrow, and while often undeservedly written off as one of those throwaway musical standards, this is actually the song that inspires FDR to set up the new deal for everyone and at least try to improve life for the least well off. Like all great musicals, Annie has a fantastic story that takes you on an emotional journey as relevant to the class system today as during the Great Depression. Then there are these incredibly well structured, old school Broadway show tunes that are just works of genius. It’s the combination of all these things that make Annie one of the best-loved shows of all time. This production should therefore not only appeal to the children but to the whole family – you can bet your bottom dollar that you will be thoroughly entertained! David Kirk Director
