YEADON TOWN HALL & FRESH AIRE ENTERTAINMENT PRESENT
THURSDAY 13 JUNE - SATURDAY 15 JUNE 2019
Welcome to Yeadon Town Hall
As a fresh-faced new Community Interest Company, we’re still settling in to our home at Yeadon Town Hall and have been having great fun planning for the future as well as getting going on this year’s programme of events and refurbishments! It’s hard work and a tough challenge, but we’re incredibly grateful to have such a wonderful amount of unwavering support from the local community. The Carole King Songbook is a production we’re particularly proud of. We welcome an array of productions to the Town Hall, including tribute acts, live music, comedy nights and musicals but this is the first time Yeadon Town Hall has produced its own show in association with Fresh Aire Entertainment. The team behind Futurist Theatre Productions have taken on this challenge and we’re excited to premiere the show at Yeadon Town Hall before taking the production to theatres and arts venues across the UK this summer. Our cast and creative team are incredibly talented local individuals, all up-and-coming names who will dazzle audiences every evening. So why Carole King? We’ve all been inspired by Carole King’s musical talents and incredible songwriting. Her songs are so recognisable - even if you think you haven’t heard of her music, you’ll soon be humming along to tunes you know and love. Her repertoire extends beyond the songs she wrote and performed herself, so we’ll also be putting the spotlight on her writing for other famous artists including The Drifters. Whether you’re a huge Carole King fan or brand new to her music, I’m sure you’ll love the show.

Support Yeadon Town Hall & Restoration Yeadon Town Hall - 140 years… and counting! Yeadon Town Hall is a multi-arts venue based in the heart of Yeadon, Leeds. It’s been a local landmark for around 140 years and, with the help of Yeadon Town Hall CIC, it’s being transformed into an exciting performance space. With your help, we can restore and refurbish all key areas of the Town Hall by the end of 2020, including installing brand new professional equipment in the main auditorium, improving accessibility and creating exciting new community facilities. All donations are gratefully received to help us on our way to reach our £100,000 goal. Our Wall of Fame gives you the chance to display a name and message in our brand new Town Hall Tavern from just £100 a plaque, but we have a range of other sponsorship packages available too. To support Restoration 2020, please email info@yeadontownhall.co.uk.

Support our restoration We are fortunate to be supported by Key Fund, a social enterprise investment company, and Leeds City Council Heritage Fund, that have awarded us £750,000 towards the Town Hall’s refurbishment work. However, there is still a long way to go to fully fund the regeneration of our local landmark. We’re looking to raise a further £100,000 - can you help?
Join the Wall of Fame Our Wall of Fame will take pride of place in the newly refurbished Town Hall Tavern - and now’s your chance to have your name up in lights. Along with your name, you can add a short message (depending on the size of your plaque). It’s an ideal dedication or gift idea, and a great way to celebrate a key milestone or inspirational friend. Corporate plaques are also available for businesses and organisations to purchase - showcasing support of the town’s new social enterprise. Funds raised from the Wall of Fame will be used to significantly improve the facility for the local and wider community.

THE HISTORY OF CAROLE KING Carole King, born Carol Klein in 1942, grew up in Brooklyn, New York. Many of Carole King’s early hits were co-written with her husband Gerry Goffin before their separation in 1968. From there, King went on to release her own album in 1970 and her career continued its upward trajectory to stardom. How fitting that the very first song written and recorded by Carole King was called The Right Girl… she certainly was the right girl to set the industry alight with her countless hits. Carole King wrote hits for other artists as well as herself, most noticeably for The Drifters, The Shirelles, Aretha Franklin and The Monkees, though chart-topping stars including The Beatles and Kylie Minogue have recorded covers of King’s songs. Over her lifetime, Carole King has won five Grammy awards, in addition to being honoured with the Grammy Trustees Award, a Lifetime Achievement and Person of the Year Award. She has also been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Hollywood Walk of Fame! She is a true inspiration and legend of our time. “I still believe that everyone is beautiful in some way and by seeing the beauty in others we make ourselves more beautiful.” - Carole King, A Natural Woman: A Memoir

INTERVIEW WITH THE PRODUCER Interview with Jamie Hudson.
Why did you first decide to produce a Carole King musical? Carole King’s music is timeless - there’s no doubt about that. Plus, there’s something for everyone. For a theatre like ours, where our audience demographic is so wide and community-focussed, producing a show that appeals to all ages was key for us. We know there have been a few successful Carole King musicals touring recently, but we want to create a show that puts the spotlight on her musical genius and songwriting ability rather than documenting her career or personal journey. Was it difficult deciding which songs to include in the musical? There’s a lot of pressure to make sure everyone’s favourite Carole King hit is included, but we also wanted to add a few hidden gems. We know Carole King wrote songs for other incredible artists, too, including The Drifters, so we’ve included some classics from their repertoire in there too. How did you decide on a cast? As a small touring production we needed to ensure we chose four incredibly talented, versatile people. Having produced and directed several shows for Futurist Theatre Productions, we have a little black book crammed with talented contacts. Our cast are local up-and-coming stars, so giving them the opportunity to tour the UK and get their name out there is fantastic. Have you always wanted to be a theatre director? I’ve been involved in the arts and theatre from a very early age, and who doesn’t want to say they manage a theatre? We’re lucky to have the support of the local community, which makes the job a particularly rewarding one. There are plenty of late nights and lots of stress but knowing we’re making a genuine difference and making the arts more accessible to local people makes the job entirely worthwhile! What’s next for Yeadon Town Hall? Mr Montgomery’s Circus Spectacular is coming to the Town Hall in the summer, in association with Codswallop CIC, so we’re all really looking forward to that. It’s probably a little too early to talk about Christmas… but I’ll go for it anyway! As a venue we’re incredibly busy hosting touring acts ourselves and fundraising for our Restoration 2020 initiative. So our next ‘big thing’ will be bringing Futurist Theatre Productions’ annual Christmas Spectacular to the stage.
TAKING CAROLE ON TOUR The Carole King Songbook marks Yeadon Town Hall’s first endeavour as a producing house. It’s an ambitious piece, including a cast of professional vocalists and musicians and fantastic multimedia visual effects. Yeadon Town Hall is locally known for putting on a varied range of tribute nights, live music gigs and musicals. The ambitious production team wanted to go beyond the expected tribute night or revue concert - The Carole King Songbook is a piece of live entertainment that will inspire a whole spectrum of Carole King fans. Producer Jamie Hudson is a Carole King fan himself and knew the local audience would love the opportunity to hear a whole concert packed with her greatest hits. The challenge was creating a show that not only pleased Carole King fans, but also attracted other theatre-goers to come along. Finding a cast of incredible musicians was key and, after an extensive search, the team found their stars. The vocalists and band members are all local talent, showcasing the Town Hall’s true dedication to giving community artists the very best opportunities. The plan wasn’t to find people who looked or sounded like Carole King - simply to find exceptional talent that could do her work justice. In another first for the team, The Carole King Songbook is going on tour throughout 2019. The wide variety of venues across the country includes prestigious theatres such as Crewe Lyceum and Scarborough Spa - a wonderful opportunity to show the rest of the UK just what Yeadon can do! Touring any show presents a challenge, such as finding set and stage equipment that can be altered to suit each venue’s individual requirements. Transporting the projection equipment in order to showcase our visual effects will be the biggest hurdle to overcome but we’re sure our talented backstage crew will be up to the challenge!
