MUSIC AND LYRICS BY STEPHEN SONDHEIM | BOOK BY JAMES LAPINE ORIGINALLY DIRECTED ON BROADWAY BY JAMES LAPINE | ORCHESTRATIONS BY JONATHAN TUNICK
ABOUT THE SHOW “Be careful what you wish for” seems to be the ongoing theme in Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Brothers Grimm inspired musical, Into the Woods. The characters we meet exist in the blurred space between our young narrator’s imagination and his digital world as we follow The Baker and his wife who wish to have a child, Cinderella who wishes to go the King’s Festival, and Jack who wishes his cow would give some milk. When the Baker and his wife are visited by the neighbourhood Witch, who reveals to them that she placed a curse on their family, the two set off on a journey into the woods to reverse the curse. Also in the woods, we meet Little Red Riding Hood, who is trying to visit her grandmother, the Wolf who loves tasty little girls, the Witch’s daughter Rapunzel, and the Princes chasing after their loves. By the end of Act One, everyone has attained their wish and will seemingly live Happily Ever After. But in Act Two, when a beanstalk brings them a visit from an angry Giant, we see how the consequences of their actions haunt them in disastrous ways. The community must come together to save each other and their kingdom, but sacrifices must be made. An amateur production presented by arrangement with Music Theatre International (Europe) All authorised performance materials are also supplied by MTI Europe www.MTIShows.co.uk

JOHN ELSTUB 1951 - 2017 We were all saddened when our friend John passed away in December. We knew he was fighting a horrible disease but were all shocked at his sudden passing – no chance to say goodbye. John had been with us for what seemed like forever. Starting out on stage with HGMAOS he quickly settled into a backstage role – one that he continued whenever possible throughout the years with The Grove, The Grove & Rawdon and finally BrassNeck Theatre where he came into his own. Once John had partially retired he could give more hours to the role of DSM with the theatre company - it did not matter what was asked of him, however impossible it sounded, it was done, due to no other reason than he absolutely loved it. Many words have been spoken and written in these last few months – a BrassNeck stalwart, dedicated, talented, committed, a gentleman – the list goes on and on but there can never be enough words to truly describe John. He was a ‘one-off’ and we all truly miss him.
