YEADON TOWN HALL TUES 27 AUG - SUN 1 SEPT

THE BEGINNING A “circus” is what we call a travelling company of performers. Performing in a ring was developed by horse trick performers, who needed to make sure audiences could see the riders’ tricks. In 1768, Philip Astley took inspiration from this and put on his first performance set in a ring. His act would eventually include animal acts, clowns, acrobats and jugglers.

NAMING ‘THE CIRCUS’ ‘Astley's Amphitheatre’ just wasn’t catchy enough and ‘circus’ was first used by Charles Dibdin when he opened The Royal Circus in London. The word ‘circus’ means ‘ring’ in Latin. It was famously used by the Romans to name the Circus Maximus, the ring where chariot races took place. Circus trains, made popular in the 1870s, gave circus performers the chance to travel to new destinations far away. The circus train of The Greatest Showman’s Barnum had up to 70 carriages sometimes! Once travelling became easier, circus travellers would often build circus tents at each place. Today, this means circus troupes can perform anywhere, because they take their stage with them wherever they go.

DID YOU KNOW…? • Leotards are named after Jules Leotard - the first star of the flying trapeze! • The word ‘jumbo’ (meaning big) became part of the English language thanks to Jumbo, an 11-foot-tall circus elephant! • There are EIGHT types of tightrope walking… how many can you name? • There are over 20,000 clowns in the world • Zendaya did most of her own trapeze stunts in the film The Greatest Showman!

MEET YOU

R RINGMASTER

MR M O S!) NTGOMER Y (AKA CODSWALLOP’S JACOB PHILLIP Why have you decided to bring the circus to Yeadon? Who doesn’t love the circus? There’s something mesmerising about it and we can create a really great atmosphere at the Town Hall and have the opportunity to be totally creative. This is a family-friendly show so absolutely everyone can enjoy it.

What will you be doing as ringmaster? I’ll be introducing all our fantastic acts and getting the audience excited for what’s to come. I’ve potentially got a few tricks up my sleeve, too, but you’ll have to wait and see…

How did you decide on your circus troupe? We’ve got skilled jugglers, spectacular dancers and aerial performers. It’s one fantastic act after another. Unfortunately I had to leave Leo the lion at home this time, but I’m sure he wishes everyone the best of luck!

What can audiences expect from the show? They can expect to have lots of laughs and lots of jaw-dropping moments too. The audience plays a big part in the show, so we want to see everyone clapping, cheering and getting involved.

Tell us a little bit about Codswallop! Codswallop aims to bring accessible, affordable creative opportunities to the local area. We absolutely love what we do, because we bring people together and get to see first-hand the difference the arts can make. Ultimately we want to inspire people and put smiles on people’s faces which is what Mr Montgomery’s Circus Spectacular is all about, too. Codswallop doesn’t just produce creative events - we also create puppetry and have a skilled graphic design team. Our unique bespoke sets and costumes are also available to hire - so when we finish one of our events, we know the things we create for it can be used again to bring magic to audiences elsewhere.

Have you ever been tempted to run away and join the circus? Oh, absolutely, who hasn’t? But performing at Yeadon Town Hall’s Circus Spectacular is my chance to live that dream!
