About the Society Harrogate Operatic Players was formed nearly 100 years ago, following a meeting held on 10th March 1924 at Belvedere House, which still stands at the junction of West Park and Victoria Avenue. The first performance was ‘Trial by Jury’ at The Winter Gardens followed by their first full length production of ‘The Rebel Maid’ in February 1925 in the Grand Opera House – now Harrogate Theatre. Records show that annual musical productions were held at Harrogate Theatre from 1925 until the war in 1939. Then in 1946 the society resumed their annual shows, but this time they were performed at The Royal Hall to accommodate larger audiences. From 1987, Showtime productions were performed in addition to the annual book show and latterly, the players replaced these with the Winter and Summer ‘Serenades’ in the Sun Pavilion. In 2002, The Royal Hall was suddenly closed for essential repairs and so their annual productions moved back to Harrogate Theatre. Then in May 2008, the Society was delighted to return to The Royal Hall for ‘A Century of Song’. The concert was produced to celebrate the fabulous refurbishment and was hugely successful both artistically and financially. So much so, £15,000 was donated to The Royal Hall Restoration Trust making the society one of the major benefactors. As they approach their Centenary, Harrogate Operatic Players are known affectionately as ‘HOPS’. HOPS are now recognised by a wider circle of theatre goers than ever before and have recently produced popular shows – ‘Sister Act’, the classic family show ‘Annie’, ‘Betty Blue Eyes’ and ‘Top Hat’ Hall.

Richard Lill Chairman A very, very warm welcome to you. Without your support, all the hard work of the cast, crew, production team and executive committee would all be in vain! HOPS prides itself on providing a platform for our members to express their creativity, which is Happy, Optimistic, Positive & Supportive. Our members give their time freely and are from all walks of life, such a talented bunch, I hope you enjoy My Fair Lady as much as we have in bringing it to life for you. HOPS has become synonymous with staging quality musical theatre, but our high standards come at a price, with most productions costing in excess of £40,000 to stage. This all has to be funded by ticket sales and our kind sponsors and advertisers old and new. A special mention to our show sponsor Inspire Bathrooms of Harrogate. Thank you for taking the time to come and see us, long may your support continue. Will Eliza succeed in becoming a lady? Where on earth does it rain in Spain? Who will win at Ascot? Who will be getting married in the morning? Sit back and enjoy this musical classic. We look forward to welcoming you again at our next production in May 2020. Richard Lill HOPS, Chairman

Christine Littlewood President I am delighted to welcome you to our production of ‘My Fair Lady’. This eternally popular musical is an adaptation of George Bernard Shaw’s ‘Pygmalion’ and the storyline is as relevant and fascinating today as it was when it was first written. It happens to be my favourite show, having played the part of ‘Eliza Doolittle’ for this Society in 1978! We welcome many new members this season and their enthusiasm has contributed to the wonderful atmosphere always created at rehearsals by our very talented director Michael Kirkby. We also welcome our new musical director, James Greatorex. As well as those you see on stage, we are indebted to the support and experience given by the backstage team and thanks go to them for all their hard work. Thanks also go to Chairman, Richard Lill and the Executive Committee for the tremendous amount of work they put in for a production of this size and for the work that continues throughout the year. I trust you will enjoy this evening, so please sit back, relax and be entertained by this enchanting musical by Lerner and Loewe.

About the Show My Fair Lady – ‘The Perfect Musical!’ The most beloved musical of all time, Lerner & Loewe’s MY FAIR LADY is brought to the Harrogate Theatre in a brilliant new production from Harrogate Operatic Players, the company that brought you Sister Act, Annie, Betty Blue Eyes and Top Hat! Directed by Michael Kirkby with musical director James Greatorex, the cast of My Fair Lady, led by Nina Logue and Mark Sowden, tells the story of Eliza Doolittle, a young Cockney flower seller, and Henry Higgins, a linguistics professor who is determined to transform her into his idea of a “proper lady.” But who is really being transformed? The classic score features “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “The Rain in Spain,” “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly” and “On the Street Where You Live” and was hailed by The New York Times as “one of the best musicals of the century.”

From Stage to Screen The play My Fair Lady, was adapted by Alan Jay Lerner (book and lyrics) and Frederick Loewe (music) from the 1913 play Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw and opened on Broadway in 1956. My Fair Lady, notably was a critical and popular success and went on to win six Tony Awards, including ‘Best Musical’. The production, starring Rex Harrison as Higgins, Julie Andrews as Eliza, and Stan Holloway as her father and ran for an incredible 2,717 performances, until September 1962. My Fair Lady, the musical film, released in 1964, was adapted from the long-running Broadway musical of the same name and proved to be a great popular and critical success. The movie, which starred Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn, won eight Academy Awards, including that for ‘Best Picture.’ Film producer Jack L. Warner had felt that Julie Andrews was relatively unfamiliar to movie audiences and chose to cast Audrey Hepburn for her star power. However, Hepburn’s singing was infamously dubbed by Marni Nixon. Walt Disney, however, was not bothered by Andrews’s lack of name recognition and cast her in Mary Poppins [1964], which was a huge success and earned Andrews an Academy Award.

CREATIVE TEAM Michael Kirkby Director and Choreographer Michael, from Leeds, began his musical career at the age of 13, playing the role of Barnaby in ‘Hello Dolly!’ Since then, he has gone on to play lead roles in over 100 musicals, including ‘Crazy for You’, ‘42nd Street’ and ‘Anything Goes’. His favourite roles include Kipps in ‘Half a Sixpence’ and the title role in ‘Hans Andersen’. Michael’s television credits include five years on ‘Junior Showtime’, ‘The Flaxton Boys’ and the paper boy in ‘Queenie’s Castle’ with Diana Dors. His film credits include Alan Parker’s hit musical ‘Bugsy Malone’ in which, at the age of 14, he was lucky enough to land the part of Angelo in Fat Sam’s gang. A trained singer and dancer, he turned his talents to directing and choreography over 20 years ago and now has over 50 shows to his credit. He has also had several award-winning musicals at the Edinburgh Festival. Mike is delighted to be back in Harrogate as Director and Choreographer for My Fair Lady – the show that he made his HOPS debut with in 2002.

James Greatorex Musical Director James is an MD, piano tutor and singing tutor with a real passion for musical theatre. With a musical family, James has been in the music industry his whole life, playing in brass bands, teaching and being a pianist, and he has been working professionally for 6 years at only 23 years old. After musically directing his first show at just 16, James has musically directed for many societies and many productions across Yorkshire. My Fair Lady is his first show with HOPS and he is very excited to show Harrogate what he can do.

She even took on the task of directing the Edinburgh Fringe Festival premiere production of ‘Rent’ in 2009. After several years acting professionally, Nina decided to pursue her ambition of becoming a teacher. She currently teaches English and Drama at Outwood Academy in Ripon. She holds two Masters Degrees (English Literature from University of Edinburgh and Creative Writing from Trinity College Dublin). She is delighted to be joining HOPs for the first time in the dream role of Eliza.

Mark Sowden Professor Higgins Credits include: Sweeney Todd (The Demon Barber), Willliam Corder (Maria Marten), Creon (Antigone), Heracles (Rape of the Belt), Producer (On Monday Next), Josiah Fosdyke (Fosdyke Saga), Sir Osgood (Sugar), Gangster (Kiss Me Kate), Chief Sitting Bull (Annie Get Your Gun), Seth Lord (High Society), Edgar (Titanic), Avram (Fiddler on the Roof), Lawrence (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), Wrestler (Unspoken), Hopkins (Made in Dagenham), Sheriff (Whistle Down the Wind). Mark has been performing for over 45 years. In 2016, he created the role of The Wrestler in ‘Unspoken’, which premiered in Leeds, London and Antwerp. As Heracles in ‘Rape of the Belt’, he met and played opposite Carole – they’ve now been married for 38 years ! Playing Higgins, in his first production with HOPS, realises a 40 year ambition for Mark. Away from the stage, Mark is a passionate supporter of Action Aid, working on projects in Nepal, Vietnam and Rwanda. Recently retired, he now divides his time between renovating a dilapidated country cottage and being a proud and indulgent grandfather to Alex and Thea.

Chris Cowling Alfred P. Doolittle Chris is delighted to be on stage with HOPS once again and thrilled to be having another ‘go’ at Alfred P Doolittle one of his favourite roles. Other outings with HOPS over the years have included leading roles in ‘Summer Song’, ‘Oklahoma’, ‘42nd Street’, ‘Crazy For You’, ‘The King And I’, ‘Half A Sixpence’, ‘Betty Blue Eyes’ and ‘Guys and Dolls’ among others. As the oldest man on stage in this production his main ambition is to remember all the lines and lyrics and keep breathing while negotiating the dance steps..... fingers crossed!

Gavin Mills Pickering Credits Include: Horace Hardwick (Top Hat), Franklin Hart Jr. (9 to 5), Mr Tooley (Made in Dagenham), Franklin D. Roosevelt (Annie), Farmer Sutcliffe (Betty Blue Eyes) Sister Act (Ensemble), Oklahoma (Ensemble) Gavin waited until he was 44 before treading the boards for the first ever time in HOPS production of Oklahoma. From there a love for Musical Theatre and performing was born and he has been seen regularly since, in productions for both HOPS and Yeadon Musical Theatre Society. After last years successful production of Top Hat, Gavin is delighted to return to HOPS for My Fair Lady as the bumbling English gent Colonel Pickering. A part he wanted from the moment the show was announced, Gavin was delighted to secure and now really hopes you all enjoy watching this classic show.

Dan Stanford

Freddy Eynsford-Hill Credits include: Alberto Beddini (Top Hat), Sgt. Noble (Betty Blue Eyes), Bert Healy (Annie) and Ensemble in others. After performing in the HOPS 2015 Showtime, Dan was hooked and has been performing with HOPS for the last four years. As part of HOPS he feels privileged to have taken part in their last three shows, his favourite of which was Top Hat performed in the Royal Hall in 2018. Dan is very excited to be playing the role of Freddy Eynsford-Hill in this production and hopes that you enjoy the show.

Christine Littlewood

Mrs Higgins Christine joined the society in 1975 and has been involved with every production since that time! Christine has played many wonderful principal roles, but has also been part of the very valuable chorus. Christine was Chairman of the Executive Committee for nine years and conceived and directed the very popular ‘Serenade’ productions in the Sun Pavilion. She directed and choreographed two compilation shows in the Royal Hall, the first of which celebrated the re-opening of the Hall in 2005. This raised £15,000 for the Royal Hall Restoration Trust. Christine is delighted to be playing the role of ‘Mrs Higgins’.

Mel James

Mrs Pearce Theatre credits include: 42nd Street (Phyllis), Gigi (Lianne D’Exellmans), Crazy for You (Polly), The Boyfriend (Polly), Half a Sixpence (Helen), Anything Goes (Hope), Sister Act (Ensemble), Annie (Ensemble) and Betty Blue Eyes (Mrs Tillbrook). Mel carefully balances (most of the time!) her performance on stage with her role as Marketing Manager for HOPS and almost enjoys her marketing role as much as performing on stage with her beloved HOPS. Almost.

FROM STAGE TO SCREEN TO STAGE HOPS always try to exceed expectations in all that we do. Whether it be in the detail of our costumes or the production quality of our photo shoots and marketing. Again, we were lucky enough to work with both Matthew Kitchen Photography and Gary Lawson Photography to produce beautiful promotional photos of the cast and a short, but fabulous promotional film. It’s a huge amount of work for all concerned – but the team always rises to the occasion and the My Fair Lady photo shoot day was hugely enjoyable despite the tight schedule and pressures of getting it ‘absolutely right!’ There are many people who made this possible – but a special thanks must go to the following people who went above and beyond. Richard Lill as our wardrobe master -whose attention to detail is second to none, Cathy Hellas, Steve Graham and Angela Mayes who collated props, helped organise the cast to be on shoot when they needed to be as well and many other things – such as smoke wafting and tea making! Tracy Smith opened her house up to us during the shoot, which made a huge difference to our day. So, a huge thank you from us all for her hospitality. And finally, the Blind Jacks Pub in Knaresborough – for being such great hosts and letting us take over their fantastic pub for a whole Sunday morning. Thank you. We hope you love our photos and film as much as we do! Mel James Marketing Manager

The National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA), founded in 1899, is the leading representative body for amateur theatre in the UK. The Association has a membership of approximately 2400 amateur theatre groups and over 2000 individual members staging musicals, operas, plays, concerts and pantomimes in a wide variety of venues ranging from the country’s leading professional theatres to village halls. Covering a broad spectrum of age ranges NODA member societies meet the needs of all levels of both performers, whether dramatic, dance or musical, and those involved backstage, front of house or in society administration. NODA aims: • To give a shared voice to amateur theatre • To help societies and individuals achieve the highest standards of best practice and performance. • To provide leadership and advice to enable amateur theatre to tackle the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century To achieve these aims NODA is divided into eleven regions, each headed by a regional councillor who sits on the National Council (ruling body of the Association), and supported by a network of regional representatives and officials. These volunteers are the vital link to the grass roots of the Association; the amateur theatre groups themselves and their members. To provide support and assistance to these volunteers, the Association is administered from its office in Peterborough by a knowledgeable and friendly staff who can deal with any enquiry about amateur theatre. Membership of NODA provides theatre groups and individuals with a wide range of benefits, including access to NODA’s advice service at national and regional level, as well as representation to government, access to funding agencies, direct access to rights holders and the media, as well access to regional and national conferences, workshops and seminars to help share information on best practice. NODA holds an annual residential Summer School (with bursaries available) offering training from professional tutors in a wide range of both performance and technical courses as well as a similar residential academy to provide similar performance based training for those under 18. NODA also holds an annual national and regional programme and poster competition to encourage high standards in design. Through its trading arm, NODA Limited members have access to a varied range of products and services, including insurance for both societies and individuals, long service awards that recognise the dedication made by individuals to amateur theatre, discounts on plays, vocal scores, libretti and technical books and a range of NODA branded merchandise. As a rights holder NODA Limited has 150 pantomimes by leading authors as well as a growing catalogue of plays and musicals.
