Reg Charity No: 504462
A Brief History The society was originally formed in March 1924, and its first performance was “Trial by Jury” at The Winter Gardens, followed by a full length production of “ The Rebel Maid” in February 1925 at the Grand Opera House – now The Harrogate Theatre. Since then they have performed productions in Harrogate every year, with the exception of the war years – an amazing record! After the war the performances were moved to The Royal Hall to accommodate larger audiences. The earlier shows included “The Duchess of Dantzig , “The Rose of Persia”, “Tom Jones”, “Bitter Sweet” & “Love from Judy”. Gilbert & Sullivan shows were also regularly performed before the separate Gilbert & Sullivan Society was formed in 1972. The late 80s saw productions directed by Bev Jones, including “The Dancing Years” by Ivor Novello. Bev was followed by Michael Kirkby, who directs our show today. Harrogate premieres of famous shows include “42nd Street”, “Me & My Girl” & “Crazy for You”. From 1987, in addition to the annual book show, “Showtime” productions were performed, followed by the “Serenades” in the Sun Pavilion. Due to the closure of The Royal Hall in 2002, annual productions moved back to the Harrogate Theatre. In May 2008, the society celebrated the re-opening of the Royal Hall with “ A Century of Song”, a programme of popular songs from ten decades. This show was successful both artistically and financially and the society was able to donate £15,000 to The Royal Hall Restoration Trust. The society continues to go from strength to strength, and this year brings you the wonderful “Sister Act”.

In Memoriam We have recently lost one of our Life Members, Winsome Ingham. We have wonderful memories of one of our Society’s most colourful characters. Winsome was a member of the Society for over 50 years. As well as performing on stage she was a member of the Social and Fundraising Committee, always busy arranging numerous and varied activities. No one will ever forget “raffle tickets” and “jumble sales”!! We will miss her.

Helen Mills - Chairman A very warm welcome to our 2015 production of ‘Sister Act’. We are delighted to be able to bring this fantastic show to Harrogate Theatre and to our Harrogate audiences. We were one of a few lucky societies to be granted permission to put this wonderful show on stage having had to apply along with hundreds of other amateur groups in the UK. This show will have you entertained from the moment the curtain goes up to the moment the curtain goes down. It has some wonderful music throughout this funny and entertaining musical. The cast have just had the most fantastic time rehearsing this production and we hope that you will enjoy it as much as we have enjoyed performing it. We are delighted to be once again, working with our talented production team of Director, Mr Michael Kirkby and Musical Director, Mr James Rodgers. Michael never fails to produce a wonderful show for us in both final performance and also in the overall enjoyment of rehearsals from start to finish. Under the musical direction of James Rodgers, we have worked incredibly hard to perfect the musical numbers and has ensured that we are at the top of our game and we have the most wonderful band to bring this fabulous score to life. I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank all the members and friends of the society for their hard work and support throughout the year. As I am sure you realise, a show of this scale is not an easy feat to pull off from the staging to props, costumes to make up, backstage crew and front of house and the main committee. A lot of their personal time is given up to bring all these things together in order to put on a top class production for you, our audience to enjoy. Finally, a very big thank you to you, our audience, for your support. Without you we would be unable to perform in this wonderful theatre and continue with the hobby we love. Helen
Betty Bratley - President A very warm welcome to our production of Sister Act! A FIRST FOR HARROGATE! Sister Act is a modern musical with new musical and dance styles to tackle. All the members of the company have worked extremely hard to achieve a performance of a high standard, which I hope you will enjoy. I have been involved with Harrogate Operatic Players since 1982, and have gone from being the call boy (calling the cast to the stage) to the President in my thirty three years! I was a committee member for sixteen of those years, and, more recently, have had the privilege of being President for the last six. Together with my late husband, Michael, I have enjoyed many happy times with the society, which feels like home. HOPS has previously been the first society to introduce new shows to a Harrogate audience, and it is a great privilege to be bringing you another new show once again! My personal thanks go to everyone who has worked unstintingly to make the show a success. I feel very privileged to be President of such a talented, hard-working and enthusiastic society. Enjoy the show! Betty
Direction & Production... Michael Kirkby - Director & Choreographer Michael, from Leeds, began his musical career at the age of 13, playing the role of Barnaby in “Hello Dolly!”. Since then, he has gone on to play lead roles in over 100 musicals, including “Crazy for You”, “42nd Street” and “Anything Goes”. His favourite roles include Kipps in “Half a Sixpence” and the title role in “Hans Andersen”. Michael’s television credits include five years on “Junior Showtime”, “The Flaxton Boys”, and the paper boy in “Queenie’s Castle” with Diana Dors. His film credits include Alan Parker’s hit musical “Bugsy Malone” in which, at the age of 14 he was lucky enough to land the role of Angelo in Fat Sam’s gang. A trained singer and dancer, he turned his talents to directing and choreographing over 20 years ago and now has over 50 shows to his credit. He has also had several award-winning musicals at the Edinburgh Festival. He is delighted to be back in Harrogate as Director and Choreographer, having made his stage debut with us in 1987 as Kipps. He has directed our productions since 2002. Mike leads a busy life on and off stage and we are grateful to him for fitting us in his schedule. His rehearsals are always fun.
James Rodgers- Musical Director James has been an active member of theatrical society since the age of 13. His passion for musical theatre led him to study at Leeds College of Music, graduating with a BA Hons. In 1992 James joined the Wetherby Really Youthful Theatre Group and at the age of 15 had his first chance at musically directing the musical “Half A Sixpence”. James has worked with York Light Operatic Company and the Northern Musical Theatre Company in shows such as: “Fame”, “Godspell”, “Les Miserables”, “Summer Holiday”, “High Society”, “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “42nd Street”, to name but a few! As well as performing, James has taught for many years at Stagecoach Theatre Arts Schools in Tadcaster and Wetherby, and has worked for the Theatre Royal Wakefield Performance Academy as singing tutor for a few years. A skilled pianist, James has had a wide and varied musical career spanning both work in the pit and treading the boards. James has enjoyed his role as Musical Director with Harrogate Operatic Players for their recent Serenades in the Sun Pavilion and is looking forward to his debut role as Musical Director at Harrogate Theatre performing “Sister Act “with HOPS.
The Story... Deloris van Cartier is auditioning to perform in the nightclub run by her gangster boyfriend Curtis, when she decides that she does not need Curtis to achieve her ambitions. She goes to tell him so, just in time to see him shoot someone. Horrified, she runs away. Curtis orders his men, Joey, Pablo and TJ to get her and bring her back. Deloris runs to the police and tells Officer Eddie Souther. Eddie decides that Deloris needs to go into the witness protection programme and sends her to the place he believes Curtis will never find her – a convent! Whilst at the convent, Deloris attends choir practice and unexpectedly takes over from Sister Mary Lazarus, teaching the nuns how to sing. The next Sunday, the choir perform an up-tempo hymn, which to the struggling church’s surprise, brings in people off the streets. The Mother Superior is not impressed by Deloris’s changes to the choir, preferring a more traditional approach. News of the choir soon spreads, with reporters wanting to get the story behind this latest sensation. Over the coming weeks, the choir becomes incredibly successful. Curtis’s gang spot Deloris on the TV and Curtis orders his boys to retrieve her. The nuns overhear a conversation between Deloris and the Mother Superior, and Deloris tells them the truth about who she really is. As Deloris prepares to leave, Sister Mary Robert begs to come with her. Deloris tells her she must find her own way – Deloris can’t tell her what is right. After she’s left, Deloris realises that the nuns need her and that the choices she is making will leave her with nothing but fame and money. She decides to go back to the convent to help her “sisters”. Curtis and the boys sneak into the convent and find Deloris. There is a final confrontation. Curtis is about to fire on all the nuns, when Eddie disarms him. Mother Superior and Deloris come to a truce and accept that perhaps they are not so different after all.
Emma Swales - Deloris Emma is 25 and born and bred in Harrogate. She has loved music, drama and dancing from a very young age, joining St Andrews players at 12 years old. She has played many different characters in shows like “Fiddler on the Roof”, “Oklahoma!”“Crazy for You” to name a few, her favourite being Mabel (The worlds fattest dancer) in the St Andrews sell-out production of “FAME”. Emma went to school at Harrogate High School and, at 16, was offered a place at Phil Winston’s Theatreworks Performing Arts College where she trained and performed for three years, graduating with a vocational training certificate in performing arts. Her first professional contract started 2 weeks after graduating college, in a multi-national show in Israel. She then lived, auditioned and worked in London for 4½ years before taking a break to have her gorgeous little girl Lilly who is now 2 years old. The last two years have seen Emma playing the very important role of mummy. When she heard about HOPS’ production of “Sister Act”, she decided instantly that it was time to get back in the habit!! Emma can’t wait for you to see this fabulous show and would like to thank her amazing family and friends for their support!
Christine Littlewood Mother Superior
Naomi Bass Sister Mary Robert
Christine has performed in productions every year since joining HOPS 40 years ago, playing many wonderful principal roles in that time. Alongside being a playing member, she has served on various committees and took on the role of Chairman for 9 years. She directed and choreographed Summer and Winter Serenades in the Sun Pavilion and two compilation shows at the Royal Hall. She belongs to a very musical family and her three grandsons, Jack, Jamie and Harry look as though they are going to carry on enjoying music as much as she has done. Christine is looking forward enormously to “Sister Act”.
Naomi has had a passion for drama and performing arts since the age of 11, when she joined the Knaresborough School of Speech and Drama. She has performed in many of their shows and competed at the Harrogate Competitive Festival for Music, Speech and Drama. In her career, Naomi specialises in Beauty Therapy and she joined HOPS to carry on her passion in her hobby. She loves performing and is really looking forward to “Sister Act”
Laura Askew Sister Mary Patrick
Ruth Graham Sister Mary Lazarus
Laura has had a passion for Performing Arts since around the age of 8 when she started to attend drama classes at the Harrogate Theatre followed by the Knaresborough School of Speech and Drama. Laura has a 1st Class Degree in Performing Arts from the University of Cumbria and now enjoys working as a secondary school teacher as well as teaching at Ripon Stage Academy. “Sister Act” is Laura’s second show with HOPS and she is loving every minute of it....and hopes you will too!
This is Ruth’s second show with HOPS, having played Ado Annie in last year’s production of “Oklahoma!” Ruth is no stranger to the stage, and has performed in over 30 musicals and plays throughout Yorkshire and the West Midlands. Some of her favourite roles to date include Annie Oakley in “Annie Get Your Gun”, Sally Bowles in“Cabaret”, Gigi in “Gigi”, Edith in “Fur Coat and No Knickers” and Dorothy in “Wizard of Oz”. Having played Maria Von Trapp in “The Sound of Music”, Ruth is excited to be back in her habit, but this time as a much older, and much more miserable, rapping nun!
Richard Upton Officer Eddie Souther
Chris Cowling Monsignor O’Hara
Richard made his stage debut aged 10 playing the title role in “Oliver!”. He then performed in the show again with Harrogate Operatic Players, marking his first production with the society in 2005. He has since performed several roles with the society including Barnaby in “Hello Dolly!” (2011) and Fyedka in “Fiddler on the Roof” (2010). Richard is an active member of the National Youth Theatre, and has more recently performed roles including Javert “Les Miserables”, Mickey “Blood Brothers”, Finch “How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying”, Claude “Hair”, Nathan Detroit “Guys and Dolls” and Gomez “The Addams Family”. Having been in London for the past few years, Richard is delighted to be back with HOPs, playing the role of Eddie in this production of “Sister Act”.
Chris is delighted to be performing with Harrogate Operatic Players once again, having spent many happy hours over more years than he cares to remember, rehearsing and playing many roles with them. Some of his favourites include The King in “The King and I”, Nathan Detroit in “Guys and Dolls”, Fagin in “Oliver!”, Dolittle in “My Fair Lady”, Chitterlow in “Half a Sixpence”, Bella Zangler in “Crazy for You” and Ali Hakim in “Oklahoma!”
Chris Kemp Curtis Jackson
Stuart Hutchinson TJ
Chris, owner of local stage school Starmakers, has been a member of HOPS since 1987 performing in his first show, “Hans Andersen”, in 1988, where he played the role of the King in “The King’s New Clothes” with not much to cover his modesty! From those colourful beginnings he has gone on to perform in nearly 50 shows and concerts with the society, highlights including playing Bill Snibson in “Me & My Girl”, a premiere for the society back in 1997. He is delighted to be involved in another premiere with HOPS albeit playing a very different type of character from his normal song and dance roles.
Stuart first took to the stage aged 4, dancing with the St Aelred’s Irish Dancers before moving to dance with the Katrina Hughes School of Dance in later years where he had the opportunity to perform in London and Europe. Between working as a Performing Arts Assistant at Harrogate High School Stuart is also Principal of Ripon Stage Academy teaching children aged 5-18. Stuart is a seasoned performer in Harrogate, playing both leading and supporting roles including Kipps “Half A Sixpence” with R.A.O.S and Scarecrow “The Wizard of Oz” with Deanery Players. Stuart first joined HOPS in 2011 playing Ambrose Kemper in “Hello Dolly!”. Since then he has played as ensemble and Purser in “Anything Goes” (2013). Stuart is delighted to be playing the role of TJ in this production of “Sister Act” and wishes to thank everyone for their support!
Roy Woodhead Joey
Michael Todd Pablo
Roy Woodhead, who plays the role of loyal gangster Joey, is proud to be part of the Harrogate Operatic Players. This is Roy’s second year with HOPS. His first appearance was in last year’s “Oklahoma!”. Roy is a big fan of musical theatre, a passion he and his family all share. Roy would like to thank his partner, family and friends for their support and the encouragement they have given him. Roy spends some of his spare time working as a personal trainer and this helps balance his love of pizza, chocolate and yum yums!
Michael’s foray into HOPS’s “Sister Act” is a dream come true! Prior roles include Paul Bratter in “Barefoot in the Park”, Combeferre in “Les Misérables”and Will Parker in “Oklahoma!”. This Yankee from the Northwest, USA, accredits The Regional Theatre of the Palouse for his theatrical training and dedicates this show to his long-time director, mentor and friend, John.

HOPS Charity of the Year HOPS has a proud history of donating funds to many local charities. Last year it was decided to nominate a charity of the year. HOPS’ first Charity of the Year from 2013 to 2014 was an extremely successful year of fundraising for our local hospice – Saint Michael’s. From marathons, half marathons, 10k runs and our very successful quiz night with a real Eggheads quiz master and local DJ from Stray FM – Alex Cann as our host we raised over £2,500. Following our very successful year of fundraising for Saint Michael’s Hospice last year, our members chose Help for Heroes as Charity of the Year for 2014-15. We began our year of fundraising by carol singing round the streets, bars and restaurants in Harrogate town centre and raised over £150! To date, two of our members have signed up for their own personal challenges to also raise money for Help for Heroes. Angela Mayes will be tackling the Yorkshire Three Peaks in August and Mel James has signed up for the Yorkshire Marathon in October. To follow their journey as they train for their challenges, please log onto our website (www.harrogateoperaticplayers.co.uk ). For more information on the work of Help for Heroes, please check out their website: www.helpforheroes.org.uk
