Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber Book and Lyrics by Don Black and Christopher Hampton Based on the Billy Wilder film
ABOUT THE SHOW
Orchestrations by David Cullen & Andrew Lloyd Webber Original production by The Really Useful Group Ltd.
In her mansion on Sunset Boulevard, faded silent-screen goddess, Norma Desmond, lives in a fantasy world. Impoverished screen writer, Joe Gillis, on the run from debt collectors, stumbles into her reclusive world. Persuaded to work on a script that she believes will put her back in front of the cameras, he is seduced by her lifestyle on Sunset Boulevard... An amateur production by arrangement with The Musical Company Ltd. The Really Useful Group Ltd. gratefully acknowledges the role of Amy Powers in the lyric development of “Sunset Boulevard.
ROYSTON BAYFIELD - DIRECTOR Royston’s first cinema memory is of watching The Jungle Book, however his favourite film of all time is The Matrix and his dream role would have to be Iron Man. On the red carpet, Royston would like to be accompanied by Christopher Nolan – not an actor but the ultimate story teller - and in his Oscar acceptance speech Royston would thank his wife, Caroline.
TOM KYLE - MUSICAL DIRECTOR Tom’s earliest memory of going to the cinema was to watch Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade at the Leicester Square Odeon – which was extremely cool at the time – although his all time favourite film has to be Legally Blonde (obviously!) and his dream role would be Frodo Baggins in The Hobbit. When asked who he would like to walk down the red carpet with Tom thought that, due to the interesting experience at the after show party, he would opt for Oliver Reed and the people he would thank in his Oscar acceptance speech would be his wife Emily and his parents.
STUART HUTCHINSON - CHOREOGRAPHER/MANFRED The first film Stuart was ever taken to the cinema to see was Toy Story which he loved, however his favourite film of all time is The Day After Tomorrow. His ultimate dream role is Bert from Mary Poppins, a role full of singing and dancing which Stuart simply loves. On his walk down the red carpet Stuart would love to be accompanied by James Corden who he sees as a comedy genius, and also another lover of musical theatre and for their never ending love and support over the years, Stuart would thank his mum and dad in his Oscar acceptance speech.
LAURA JUDGE - NORMA DESMOND The first film Laura remembers seeing at the cinema is Disney’s Peter Pan, and was captivated by the absolute magic of it, however her favourite film of all time is The Godfather. Her dream role would be Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada, a wonderfully evil role she would love to play. Laura’s choice of escort on the red carpet would be the gorgeous Idris Elba and the person she would thank in her Oscar acceptance speech would have to be her mum, for all her support over the years (and for passing on her fabulous genes!).
BEN TOMLINSON - JOE GILLIS The first film Ben remembers seeing is Twister, however his favourite film of all time is Oliver. Ben’s dream role would have to be James Bond in any of the Bond movies – after all James Bond always gets all the girls!! If he missed out on that role then it would have to be Jack Black in School of Rock – as Ben is constantly told how similar to him he is! Ben can only think of one person who he would wish to walk down the red carpet with – of course it can only be his hero Michael Ball and in his Oscar acceptance speech Ben would thank his parents – for making him!
ANDREW WALTON - MAX VON MAYERLING Andrew’s first cinema memory is watching The Wilderness Family in about 1976! His favourite film of all time however is not just one – as he loves the Kill Bill volumes and the Harry Potter films – all of them although his dream role must be Don Lockwood in Singing in the Rain. Andrew can think of no-one better than Dame Helen Mirren to escort him on the red carpet – what a night that would be! In his Oscar acceptance speech, Andrew would love to thank his mum for all her encouragement when he was younger in helping his ‘artistic’ side come out.
EMILY KYLE - BETTY SCHAEFER Emily remembers being taken to the cinema for the first time when she was four years old - to see 101 Dalmations - this led to her constantly dressing up as Cruella De Vil! - however the person she always wanted to be as a child was the main character in her favourite film Matilda. Her dream film role would have to be Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz despite being a tad too old now – she will always have a soft spot for this as it was her first major stage role. Emily thinks that the amazing actor Tom Hanks would be a perfect escort on the red carpet as he seems to be a really nice person, but she could only thank her husband in her Oscar acceptance speech as he puts up with her when she is moody!
RICHARD MACE - ARTIE GREEN The first film Richard watched in the cinema was at the grand old age of three – and he remembers being entranced by The Little Mermaid. However his favourite film, due to it being the funniest and most quotable of all time, has got to be This is Spinal Tap. Richard has been told he would make a young Rowan Atkinson if ever a biopic was made of his life, although his choice would be as a Jedi in a Star Wars movie. On his walk down the red carpet Richard’s choice of companion would be Tom Hanks – the nicest guy in Hollywood! He would definitely thank his parents in his Oscar acceptance speech – for taking him to Saturday morning drama school rehearsals and supporting him in every subsequent show.
DAVID LEE - CECIL B DE MILLE Dave is not sure which but his first cinema experience was definitely either The Three Musketeers or The Sound Of Music, however his favourite film of all time is Pretty Woman. A dream role for Dave would be any role playing opposite either Lily James or Julia Roberts and his escort of choice on the red carpet would be either Lily James of Julia Roberts – do we see a theme appearing here?! Dave can only think of two people he would thank in his acceptance speech – his now dearly departed mum and dad – Kathleen and Derek Lee RIP. This performance is in their memory.
PHIL YEADON - SHELDRAKE Phil’s first visit to the cinema was to the ABC on Broadway in Bradford to see the film King Kong in 1976. Asked to choose a favourite film of all time proved difficult but Phil decided it had to be either Goodfellas or the 1976 version of the A Star Is Born. His dream role would in fact be any role in the film Jesus Christ Superstar and on his walk down the red carpet Phil would love to be accompanied by Morgan Freeman. The one person Phil would thank in his Oscar acceptance speech would be Marguerite Jennings, Producer of Bradford Youth Players, who got him interested in acting, and who we sadly lost this year.
ADAM FOKLARD - RICHARD Although Adam cannot remember it, his first cinema experience was to see The Little Mermaid – he hopes he enjoyed it! Adam tells all that his favourite film is A Clockwork Orange, however secretly it is Love Actually and his dream film role would be either a replacement of Russell Crowe in Les Miserables or a Weasley in any of the Harry Potter films. Robert Downey Jnr or Benedict Cumberbatch would be his ideal red carpet companion as it would appear as if he actually hung out with them – or maybe Karen Gillan but that would be for a completely different reason!!! Adam would have to thank his wife, Lottie, in his Oscar acceptance speech for putting up with him being out of the house constantly, much like when he is rehearsing a show!
ALEX WRIGHT - WUNDERKIND Alex’s first visit to the cinema was to see the film Brother Bear – he tells us he was like Koda! His favourite film has always been Mrs Doubtfire however more recently La La Land comes close, although his dream role has to be Cosmo Brown in Singing in the Rain. On his walk down the red carpet Alex would choose as companions Emily Blunt and Julie Andrews – in other words Mary Poppins! His Oscar acceptance speech thanks would go to his mum for all the hours she spent ferrying him around before he learnt to drive.
EMMA JANE FEARNLEY - MARY Emma remembers enjoying her first visit to the cinema to see Disney’s Tarzan, however her favourite film is Jurassic Park – she loves dinosaurs! Emma is always up for excitement and adventure and would, therefore, perform her own stunts in her dream role of Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games. Her walk down the red carpet could only be with the gorgeous Bradley Cooper and in her Oscar acceptance speech Emma would thank her biggest supporter – someone who is always there to cheer her on no matter how large or small the role – her Grandma.
EMMA ROE - KATHERINE Emma’s first cinema experience was to watch Pocahontas, however her favourite film of all time is Mrs Doubtfire and her dream role would of course be Baby from Dirty Dancing. Whilst on her walk down the red carpet Emma would love to be accompanied by Hugh Jackman and she would thank her best friend Katie Kelly in her Oscar acceptance speech.
HELEN GALLAGHER - JOANNA The first film Helen remembers seeing is Aladdin in 1993 at Keighley cinema, but her favourite ever film is probably Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. Her dream role would be Amelie in the film of the same name – although her French is not quite up to scratch. Her ideal escort on the red carpet would be Leonardo DiCaprio as he was in the film Titanic, and she would of course thank her parents in her Oscar acceptance speech – her mum for being her seamstress and her dad for being her chauffer.
JENNIFER CHAPMAN - ANITA Jen’s first cinema experience was at the Cottage Road cinema in Headingly watching The Jungle Book. Her favourite film of all time has to be Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet, although her dream role to play would be Hermione in the Harry Potter films. Jen would love to be escorted down the red carpet by the wonderful actress, Judy Dench – what amazing stories she would tell – and in her Oscar acceptance speech Jen would, of course, like to thank her husband Chris.
KATIE KELLY - DAWN Katie’s first visit to the cinema was to watch The Lion King, however her favourite films are too many to list - nevertheless if ever Stardust or A Knight’s Tale are on tv there is no way she cannot watch them – so maybe they should be top of the list. Her dream role to play would be Anita in the ever popular film West Side Story. Katie’s choice of escort on the red carpet would be Chris Hemsworth of Avengers fame, and although she does know it’s a bit of a cliché, the people she would thank in her Oscar acceptance speech would have to be her mum and dad who she loves very much!
MATTHEW LOVELL- CLIFF Matthew’s first film experience was watching the cartoon Bambi but his favourite film of all time must be Withnail and I. His dream role would undoubtedly be Lord Voldemort in any of the Harry Potter films. Matthew would definitely choose the absolutely fantastic actor John Hurt - who was amazing in the film Scandal - to accompany him down the red carpet and in his Oscar acceptance speech he would thank his wife, Kay.
NIKI BURROWS - LISA Nicky’s first cinema experience was to see The Lion King but her favourite film of all time is Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet, whilst her dream role would be Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice. Nicky would love to be escorted down the red carpet by Tarzan actor Alexander Skarsgard and in her Oscar acceptance speech she would thank her parents.
PAUL CHEWINS - MYRON Paul’s first cinema experience was to see the original version of the film The Jungle Book. However his favourite film is difficult – like choosing your favourite child – currently it would have to be An American Werewolf in London. His dream role would be the Joker in The Dark Knight and his ideal companion on the red carpet would be the actress Gillian Anderson . In his Oscar acceptance speech Paul’s thanks would be obvious – his parents and his Junior School English Teacher Mrs Barringer.
RACHEL SOWERBY - PRODUCTION MANAGER The first film Rachel remembers seeing at the cinema is E.T., however her favourite film of all time is The Lost Boys and her dream role – due to always having had a bit of a fancy for Ewan McGregor - is Satine in Moulin Rouge. Rachel’s ideal escort on the red carpet would have to be Adam Sandler and in her Oscar acceptance speech she would thank her husband, Andy, who puts up with her disappearing act every year between January and May.
