Analysis of Existing Building Form •

The existing walls are composed of metal cladding over strawbale and timber shiplap over strawbale. Metal cladding over brickwork is also used. Strawbales are among the most cost-effective thermal and sound in-

sulation available. The metal and timber framework encompasses the tightly packed straw resulting in good fire and pest resistance. Straw bales have a low embodied energy and is a renewable building material. It is an appropriate choice for a sustainable building approach as it reduces air pollution and stores carbon. •

Aluminium and timber framed windows are used in the existing building. Painted steel posts line the exterior of the building and concrete finishes are present on the lower walls and floors. The roof comprises of zincalume roof sheeting and the skylights are made of zincalume clad. Zincalume is comprised of zinc, aluminium and silicon. It is highly durable known for its strength, corrosion resistance and long lifespan.

The ground floor slab is built on top of a ground works fill. It is constructed as a single storey building with two roof structures located at the front of the building and on top of the dog kennels towards the back of the building.

Three rainwater tanks are located on the East side of the building in accordance with council requirements. Overland flow and stormwater drainage flow away from the building (civil engineer consulted).

Constraints and Regulations •

The building is classified as a mixed use Class 5/6 building type under the NCC. Class 5 buildings are office buildings used for professional or commercial purposes and class 6 buildings refer to buildings used for retail purposes.

NCC Volume 1 Section D refers to access and egress: For disability access, ramp access must be considered. They must be able to approach the building from the road boundary, from any accessible carparking space, from any accessible associated building and access work and public spaces and facilities for personal hygiene. The pathway up to the building is a gentle ramp. Safe movement to and within the building will require safe walking gradient surfaces, slip resistant walking surfaces, stair treads, suitable handrails and landings and fall prevention barriers. For health reasons, sanitary compartments must not open up directly to a kitchen, public dining room, a room used for pubic assemby or workplace. For this reason there is a circulation zone in front of the entry into the bathroom.

Natural light is not a requirement of class 5 buildings but should be considered for WELL ratings. Artificial lighting must be installed to provide an illuminance of not less than 20 lux appropriate to the function or use of the building to enable safe movement by occupants. It is required in stairways, passageways, and ramps and to all rooms that are frequently occupied, all spaces required to be accessible, all corridors, lobbies, internal stairways, other circulation spaces and paths of egress. The artificial lighting system must comply with AS/NZS 1680.0.

For a class 6 building conditioned space an hourly regulated energy consumption, averaged over the annual hours of operation must be no more than 80 kJ/m2.hr.

The site comes under the Muswellbrook Local Environmental Plan 2009 (pub. 15-6-2012) and is in the RU1 Primary Production land use zone. In this zone, community buildings and animal boarding facilities are permitted in this zone with council consent. Some key objectives are to maintain the rural landscape character of the land in the long term, to minimise conflict between land uses within this zone and land uses within adjoining zones and to protect and/or conserve soil stability, vegetaiton and water resources.

Mark Douglass

Mark Douglass is a Melbourne based lighting designer who specialises in bespoke hand blown glass lights. Launched in 2010, his atelier Melbourne Glassworks has expanded to a team of 4. Keeping to a close and small team has meant that Mark continues to personally trial and produce a large sum of the lights himself. Mark’s Pebble and Trixie light designs will be utlised in this project. The round circular nature of the designs paired with the irregularity of the glass blowing technique creates a unique aesthetic and texture which will suit the nature inspired design of the project.

The internal fitting is produced using the latest lighting technology as aluminium and acrylic extrusions are used to contain the mechanics and diffuse the light output. The Potter DS Pendant and Wall Light in DS Charcoal Glaze Finish will be utilised in employee spaces for this project. The pendant will enhance the length of the spaces whilst the black ceramic finish conveys the historical context of coal mining in Muswellbrook.

Hunter Valley Ceramics Hunter Valley Ceramics is a studio based in Branxton, NSW. The studio offers a variety of small group hand building workshops and also allows local artists to sell their work. The studio practices wheel throwing and hand building techniques to produce beautiful and durable hand made ceramics. The studio also works to minimise their environmental footprint by recycling clay scraps and using mid-fire clay which reduces electricity consumption. The Hunter Valley Ceramics will be used to style and decorate the space. The handmade textural quality will add a homely layer to the public spaces and be a contextual reminder of Hunter Valley craftsmanship.

Emma Rolls Photography Emma Rolls is an animal lover and photography from Orange, NSW. She began photography in 2015 and also paints and draws animal cartoons. Her work has been included at the Orange Regional Gallery and The Corner Store Gallery as well as Hyde Park in Sydney and the Small Forest Wines Cellar Door in Denman. Cadrys Area Rugs The Cadry Family was established in 1952 and source the finest rugs and carpets across a wide rnage of design styles. Established in Sydney by Jacques Cadry who was known for pioneering the rug trade in Australia, Cadrys continues to remain a family business led by his Jacques son, Robert along with his sons, Ari and Jared Cadry. Now holding Australia’s largest collection of decorative and antique rugs of, Persian, Anatolian, Caucasian and European origin, Cadrys has expanded to retail and wholesale showrooms between Sydney and Melbourne. They also work with leading designers on on new design collaborations. Cadrys is also a member of GoodWeave and produces ethically in Nepal and India. The OR3.01 and CS3.01 area rugs will be used in the entrance waiting space and the employee break out space. Made from machine tufted nylon and originating from Denmark, the rugs are appropriate for heavy commercial applications. The irregular straight and curved forms align with the motifs of the project and the colour palettes aludes to the organic nature of the spaces.

‘River’ Tables and Sculptures River tables are made from a natural wood table top and extremely durable epoxy resin poured over and within the cavities of the wood. The river tables will be made custom for the retail table tops by Blue Mountains River Tables. Ben Young is an artist based in Aotearoa, New Zealand. His sculptures explore the relationship between land, sea and human. The translucent resin combined with the texture of the moulds creates a dynamic moving water scene. The integration of both the river tables and sculptures illustrate the context of the Hunter River towards the back of the site. The visual cues of water will also convey the biophillic viewpoint of the project.

Waste Terrazzo / Five Mile Radius •

Five Mile Radius was founded in 2016 and is a design studio based in Brisbane which explores Australian construction materiality.

The studio uses start up projects to prototype new ideas. This process often transforms projects into products allowing for continued growth and experimentation.

Economic funds generated from such products are used in their continual research into sustainable materials and to curate educational content and events.

The studio combines natural materials and recycled man made materials. For example, their primary consumer product, the speckled terrazzo slabs, are made entirely from demoltion and construction waste collected locally from the surrounding Brisbane area.

Due to the studios ongoing work and research, it is considered a local leader in closed loop thinking, waste reuse and bioclimatic design and consultancy.

The customisable nature of the made to order Waste Terrazzo Slabs also enable customers to choose the colours of the aggregates which can then be made into bespoke countertops and furniture shapes.

For the proposed concept design of the Animal Community Centre, waste terrazzo is a suitable material. The hardwearing nature of the material makes it appropriate for commercial spaces such as the cafe and bathroom areas. The custom colours which can be chosen for the slabs will highlight the colour palette of green, blue and orange. The earthy speckled nature of terrazzo will reflect the designs relationship to the surrounding landscape whilst the bold geometric forms of the coloured aggregate create a sense of contemporary whimsy.

Ceiling Planters

As the building site is one storey, the vertical height can be highlighted by adding a ceiling element incorporating the black metal materiality which is present throughout the space and indoor plants. Creating this connection to nature adds a level of biophillic design which is one of the primary aims of the space. Due to the fact that most of the flooring space will be used for circulation and furniture structures, the ceiling level is an empty space which can be utilised for this organic purpose and enhanced by the existing skylights. By designing a vertical structure which also mirrors the forms of the below structure, a sense of harmony and balance can be achieved.

Architecture for Dogs Architecture for Dogs was created by architects and designers to explore the close relationships between humans and their dogs through materials and the natural environment. 13 pieces of architecture have been designed by designers across the globe for dogs and their owners. The blueprints are free to download and can therefore be made by dog lovers everywhere. The innovative structures explore how dogs interact with their environments for different functions. The structures will be used in the exercise yards and cafe in order to generate a sensory experience for the dogs.

Armstrong Flooring Armstrong Flooring is a leading manufacturer based in Braeside, Victoria and specialises in both residential and commercial surface and floring solutions. Flooring selections must be carefully considered in this project to be suitable for commercial traffic spaces and animal healthcare use. The Timberline® Plus collection is a commercial flooring heterogeneous vinyl sheet with a natural wood texture. With improved P3 Slip Resistance and a 0.7mm High Performance Wear Layer the vinyl product is easy to maintain and has a Rate Level A Global Green Tag™. The Tried and True colour has a warm undertone which relates to the warm oranges and greens in the main spaces. Medintone™ is a homogeneous vinyl sheet with unique Diamond 10™ technology, featuring industrial diamonds infused within the surface. The flooring is highly suited to medical environments and is designed to perform in sterile and aseptic areas such as the procedural room and other animal areas. The soft palette of the Sand Light colour will incorporate the warm colours of the space as well as adds a stone like textural quality to the project.

Layout 1 works with pre-existing walls as no new construction needs to take place in order for this layout to work. The cafe situated on the East side utilises the natural light from the surrounding windows and the location of the existing bathrooms are in close proximity to the public space. The open plan office suits the round circulation surrounding the space and maximises the floor space. However, the location of the procedural area and laundry indicates that it will be within a high traffic area near the employee entrance. The office is also separated from the employee kitchen and meeting space by the laundry and procedural area. A more free flowing and connected layout could be considered.

Layout 2 keeps the location of the cafe, bathroom and adoption rooms. By relocating the reception into the entrance area the office space can be expanded. The kitchen and meeting space can utilise the natural light from the glass wall facing the outdoor yard and is connected to the office space for easy access by the employees. However, locating wall space for the plumbing in the kitchen in this layout may prove difficult. The procedural area is also in a high traffic zone near the employee entrance and the space allocated for the laundry/storage may be better utilised.

“Connectedness to nature and wellbeing”

“A sense of time and place”

“Creating functional and purposeful spaces”

The ebbs and flow of the river, inhale and exhale motions, the circadian rhythms of sleep, the gentle but steady passing of time. Biophilic patterns in nature remind us of our connections to the landscape. Authentic innovation must acknowledge the foundational evolution of craftsmanship and reveals a sense of time and place. Our human sensory experiences define our lives and developing functional spaces with purpose is key to a full experience. These aspects reveal the Rhythms of the Hunter and the patterns within our daily lives which are one and the same.
